Dyes are well known major pollutants in wastewater discharged by various textile industries which are toxic to human beings and aquatic life. It is necessary to remove these colorants from water with low-cost yet effective method by which these pollutants can be removed from the water bodies. Current study has been designed to develop cost-effective material for the removal of dyes in wastewater along with the application of composite to inhibit the growth of Gram negative (GN) and Gram positive (GP) bacterium. Nanocomposite (Ag-NiO2@PVA) of silver and nickel was synthesized by the chemical reduction method and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used as a stabilizing medium. Nanocomposite (NC) was characterized employing different techniques including XRD, SEM, and FTIR which not only confirmed its synthesis but also provided their structure and morphology. The hexagonal close packed nanocomposite was tested for the catalytic degradation of different azo and anthraquinone dyes including methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO) and eosin yellow (EY). The degradation of MO, MB and EY was recorded in 20, 16 and 20 min with percentage removal 89.26, 95.88 and 96.56 % respectively. Antibacterial potential of the nanocomposite was assessed against different GN and GP bacterial strains namely Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and the as-synthesized Ag-NiO2@PVA exhibited strong zone of inhibition against all types of bacterial strains mentioned herein. Nanocomposite was recovered and analyzed after dye degradation as well as the antibacterial studies have confirmed stability and recyclability of the nanocomposite. Results of the current study strongly recommend the composite for wastewater treatment applications i.e., removal of different dyes and pathogens. Silver and nickel based nanocomposite can be synthesized and modified followed by the stabilization with PVA for different applications in material sciences.

Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is the preferred technique for surgical management of benign prostatic hyperplasia in prostates over 80 cc in size. A 72-year-old male underwent a HoLEP for catheter-dependent urinary retention in the context of a 204 cc prostate. At the end of the procedure he was clinically overloaded and had developed a combined respiratory and hyperchloremic normal anion gap metabolic acidosis secondary to excessive absorption of normal saline irrigation fluid. He was transferred to the ICU for diuresis and supportive care where he made a full recovery.

In the current study, cellulose/MoS2/GO nanocomposite has been synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Reports published regarding efficiency of Mo and graphene oxide-based nanocomposites for environmental remediation motivated to synthesize cellulose supported MoS2/GO nanocomposite. Formation of nanocomposite was initially confirmed by UV-visible and FTIR spectroscopic techniques. Particle size and morphology of the nanocomposite were assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and it was found having particle size ranging from 50 to 80 nm and heterogeneous structure. The XRD analysis also confirmed the structure of the nanocomposite having cellulose, MoS2, and GO. The synthesized nanocomposite was further tested for biomolecule protective potential employing different radical scavenging assays. Results of radical DPPH● (50%) and ABTS●+ (51%) scavenging studies indicate that nanocomposites can be used as a biomolecule protective agent. In addition, nanocomposite was also evaluated for photocatalytic potential, and the results showed excellent photocatalytic properties for the degradation of 4-nitrophenol up to 75% and methylene blue and methyl orange up to 85% and 70%, respectively. So, this study confirmed that cellulose supported/stabilized MoS2/GO nanocomposite can be synthesized by an ecofriendly, cost-effective, and easy hydrothermal method having promising biomolecule protective and photocatalytic potential.

The purpose of this study was to identify the challenges to fair assessment in semester examination system, their causes and the solutions. One hundred and forty-four (144) university teachers were interviewed and 48 focus group discussions were conducted among the BS students in six public universities of the Punjab (Pakistan). The data were analyzed through thematic analysis technique. Findings of the study revealed that, in order to judge novice teachers’ competence in assessment, universities did not ask for a professional teaching certification. Most of the university teachers appeared to be in need of having more competence in developing question papers and using different assessment techniques. Moreover, there was no proper mechanism of conduction and inservice training for the enhancement of teachers’ essential skills for the fair assessment of students’ learning outcomes. The course outlines were not covered completely within the stipulated time. Additionally, the university teachers had to perform multiple departmental duties, beside their teaching activities, compelling them compromises their classes. By force of circumstance, they teach and assess selective parts of the course outlines. The respondents suggested the development of a proper training mechanism for university teachers to make them capable of doing fair assessment and provision of required resources.

Background: In December 2019, the infection caused by 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) led to an outbreak in Wuhan, situated in the Hubei Province of China. Following this, there has been a rapid increase in the number of cases. On 12th March 2020, there were over 100,000 confirmed cases and almost 4,300 deaths worldwide. The clinical profile of children with COVID-19 is unknown due to the few number of cases reported. Currently, available data suggest they may have a milder form of illness. Methods: A review of the literature published from June 2019 to March 2020 was undertaken to evaluate the clinical presentation, management and outcomes of COVID-19 in in children. Data sources included EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane library, ISI Web of Knowledge and references within identified articles. Results: We identified 303 potential studies, and 295 were excluded for reasons including duplicates, experimental studies and case reports. Eight studies were eligible for inclusion, including a total of 820 paediatric cases of COVID-19. Asymptomatic cases represented 14.3% (n = 117) of the total number of cases identified, and thus the remaining 85.7% (n = 703) experienced symptoms. Fever was the commonest symptom in 53.9% (n = 48) of cases, followed by cough in 39.3% (n = 35) of cases, and rhinorrhoea or pharyngeal congestion in 13.5% (n = 12) of cases. Diarrhoea and sore throats were less common symptoms, 7.9% (n = 7) and 9.0% (n = 8) respectively. Other symptoms, including fatigue, headache and dizziness were rare. Conclusion: Children are disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and are more likely to run a milder cause of illness following this infection compared to adults. This outbreak only started 3 months ago, therefore, further population wide studies are needed to validate these findings.

Current work describes green synthesis of Fe, Mn (monometallic) and Fe-Mn (bimetallic) nanoparticles using Cannabis sativa leaf extract as stabilizing and capping agent. In order to assess the formation of nanoparticles UV/Vis and FTIR analysis was carried out. In addition, Scanning electron microscopy and XRD studies confirmed synthesis as well as morphology of the nanoparticles. All the nanoparticles were found having particle size 20–80 nm and crystallite 3–20 nm. Photocatalytic activity of synthesized nanoparticles has been evaluated by carrying out degradation of two dyes methyl orange (MO) and Congo red (CR) in the presence of nanocatalysts. Degradation of both the dyes was carried out separately using Fe, Mn and Fe-Mn nanoparticles to compare the efficiency of monometallic with bimetallic nanoparticles. Iron and manganese monometallic particles have completely degraded MO in 18 min and 20 min and CR in 24 min and 18 min respectively. However, due to increased synergistic effect Fe-Mn BNPs completely degraded MO dye in just 12 min and CR in 14 min. In nutshell, this work is actually a step towards the synthesis of bimetallic nanoparticles using a plant extract with improved synergistic photocatalytic activities which impart various properties to the designed nanomaterial.

Abstract Psidium guajava (guava) is well known tropic tree which is abundantly grown for fruit. Many countries have a long history of using guava for medicinal purposes. This plant finds applications for the treatment of diarrhea, dysentery, gastroenteritis, hypertension, diabetes, caries and pain relief and for improvement in locomotors coordination. Its leaf’s extract is being used as a medicine in cough, diarrhea, and oral ulcers and in some swollen gums wound. Its fruit is rich in vitamins A, C, iron, phosphorus and calcium and minerals. It contains high content of organic and inorganic compounds like secondary metabolites e.g. antioxidants, polyphenols, antiviral compounds, anti-inflammatory compounds. The phenolic compounds in guava help to cure cancerous cells and prevent skin aging before time. The presence of terpenes, caryophyllene oxide and p-selinene produces relaxation effects. Guava leaves contain many compounds which act as fungistatic and bacteriostatic agents. Guava has a high content of important antioxidants and has radio-protective ability. Quercetin is considered as most active antioxidant in the guava leaves and is responsible for its spasmolytic activity. Its ethyl acetate extract can stop the germ infection and thymus production. Guava possesses anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-plaque and anti-mutagenic activities. Guava extract shows antinociceptive activity and is also effective in liver damage inflammation and serum production. Ethanolic extract of guava can increase the sperm quality as well as quantity and can be used for the treatment of infertile males.

Here, we have manufactured extremely porous photoelectrodes comprised of ZnO/TiO2 by adding lignocellulose (LC) fibers extracted from the self-growing plant (Lily) on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate using doctor blade technique for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) uses and first-principle calculations were performed for electronic band structures and density of state (DOS). Density functional theory (DFT) results revealed a high conductivity and narrow electronic bandgap after doping with LC. Experimental results showed the effect of the addition of LC in ZnO (ZnO + LC) and TiO2 (TiO2 + LC) on the structure, morphology, and power conversion efficiency (PCE) was studied in detail using powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, UV–visible spectroscopy, and solar simulant. The addition of LC in ZnO/TiO2 increases the porosity and surface area for higher dye loading and light-harvesting while decreasing the backward scattering of electrons. These developments result in a 38% increase in PCE of (ZnO + LC) as related to the ZnO based DSSC and a 104% increase in the case of (TiO2 + LC) based DSSC. In this work, we express that the development of highly porous metal oxide nano-composites by mixing LC fibers which may solve the electrolyte leakage issue and enhance the porosity of the photoelectrodes and thus enhance the PCE of DSSCs.

This work reports for the first time an exceptionally high thermal stability of cellulosic nanofibers films at 190 °C after a 5 h exposure, a threshold required for their design and manufacturing in flexible electronic devices. A long-term durability validation of a flexible cellulose nanofiber over a period of 10 years exposure under ambient condition validated their life-span over a long period of operating condition. Arresting quinoid oxidative reactions pathways and thermal degradation of lignin or lignin-less cellulose are demonstrated to be two fundamental routes to enhance thermal processing of cellulose nanofiber substrates and to achieve long service life of energy devices made from them. One of the main highlights of this work is the first time validation of a long operating service life for a light-emitting device made from a cellulose nanofibers substrate, while continuously illuminating the fabricated prototype under ambient condition for an equivalent of 10 years. The unique durability of this flexible substrate will have potential applications in flexible lighting, energy and sensing devices.

A Baker’s cyst is usually an incidental finding in adults being investigated for a joint arthropathy, and its rupture preceding the diagnosis of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is rare in children. Here, we describe a case of a 4-year-old girl who presented to the Emergency Department with right calf pain, swelling, and no preceding history of trauma. MRI confirmed a ruptured Baker’s cyst with inflammatory arthropathy alongside an extensive synovial proliferation throughout the knee joint with large joint effusions and associated soft tissue oedema tracking superiorly and inferiorly along the medial head of gastrocnemius and anteriorly along the tibia. Further investigations revealed bilateral uveitis consistent with a diagnosis of juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Copper-nickel bimetallic nanoparticles (Cu-Ni BNPs) were fabricated using an eco-friendly green method of synthesis. An extract of synthesized Gazania rigens was used for the synthesis of BNPs followed by characterization employing different techniques including UV/Vis spectrophotometer, FTIR, XRD, and SEM. Spectrophotometric studies (UV-Vis and FTIR) confirmed the formation of bimetallic nanoparticles. The SEM studies indicated that the particle size ranged from 50 to 100 nm. Analysis of the BNPs by the XRD technique confirmed the presence of both Cu and Ni crystal structure. The synthesized nanoparticles were then tested for their catalytic potential for photoreduction of methylene blue dye in an aqueous medium and DPPH radical scavenging in a methanol medium. The BNPs were found to be efficient in the reduction of methylene blue dye as well as the scavenging of DPPH free radicals such that the MB dye was completely degraded in just 17 min at the maximum absorption of 660 nm. Therefore, it is concluded that Cu-Ni BNPs can be successfully synthesized using Gazania rigens extract with suitable size and potent catalytic and radical scavenging activities.

Maximizing recovery and characterization of extractable proteins from secondary paper sludge is essential to explore the potential value from utilization of readily available waste products from pulp and paper mills. A multistep physicochemical recovery process was used, involving optimum alkaline solubilization of protein into an aqueous phase followed by augmented physical disruption of cell membranes. The final precipitation of solubilised protein was carried out using different acidic media. The optimization studies revealed that the best removal of intercellular contents from sludge can be achieved at pH 12; at this level, up to 88% of available protein is solubilised into the aqueous phase. Of all the precipitating agents used, sulphuric acid proved most effective by recovering 90% of disrupted protein. The combined effect of french press and sonication techniques resulted in significant improvement in the overall yield of recovered sludge protein (RSP). The characterization studies showed the presence of common and essential amino acids in RSP in significant quantities; it also showed that the recovery process can significantly reduce or eliminate heavy metals present in the sludge. The molecular weights (MW) of extractable proteins were determined by PAGE, and it was observed that RSP contains both low and high MW fractions.

In this study, secondary sludge (SS) from a kraft paper mill was used as a source of biomass to recover protein and investigate its potential use as a wood adhesive. The process of protein recovery involved disruption of the floc structure in alkaline medium to disintegrate and release intercellular contents into the aqueous phase followed by separation of soluble protein. Finally, the soluble protein was subjected to low pH precipitation and the pelletized sludge protein, referred to as recovered sludge protein (RSP) was tested for crude protein, moisture, and other contents. A significant process yield of 90% in terms of precipitation of soluble protein from disintegrated sludge was estimated through calorimetric studies, whereas an overall material balance confirmed a RSP yield of up to 23% based on total suspended solids of raw sludge. The RSP containing 30% crude protein was used as a wood adhesive and its adhesion performance was compared with soy protein isolate (SPI) and phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin. The testing of plywood lap joints has shown up to 41% shear strength level of RSP adhesive compared to PF. This work demonstrates the technical feasibility and potential of SS as a biomass resource to develop eco-friendly adhesives for wood composite applications.
