Abstract: Objective: This study was aimed at assessing the effects of various finish line designs and cement gap thicknesses on the fracture resistance of gradient zirconia crowns. Methods: Sixty crowns were fabricated on stainless-steel dies with yttria multi-layered (YML) zirconia and categorized into three primary groups according to finish line type (knife-edge, chamfer, and rounded shoulder). Each group was further classified into two subgroups (n = 10) according to cement space thickness (50 or 80 μm). Optical impressions of the dies were acquired with an indirect laboratory scanner, and cement spaces (50 or 80 μm) were established for each finish line type in Exocad software. Subsequently, the zirconia crowns were milled, sintered, cemented onto their respective dies, thermomechanically aged, and subjected to loading until fracture. The data were statistically analyzed with one-way ANOVA and post hoc tests for pairwise comparisons. Additionally, two-way ANOVA was used to investigate interactions between two study variables. Results: No significant differences between chamfer and knife-edge patterns were observed, whereas the rounded shoulder pattern exhibited significantly higher failure load values. Similarly, no significant difference was observed between 50 μm and 80 μm cement space. Conclusions: Knife-edge margins with YML gradient zirconia crowns provide a reliable alternative to shoulder margins, particularly in minimally invasive preparations. A cement space of 80 μm rather than 50 μm is preferred for various finish line designs.

الخلاصة: الهدف: الهدف من هذه الدراسة هو مقارنة فعالية المبارد اليدوية نوع هيدستروم و بين مبارد البروتيبر المستخدمة في علاج وإعادة علاج الجذور، في إزالة اقماع الجوتابيركا أثناء إعادة المعالجة اللبية باستخدام تقنية التصوير الإشعاعي الرقمي. الطرق: هذه الدراسة تمت خارج الأجسام الحيه / دراسية مختبريه، استخدمت تقنية أخذ العينات المتتالية غير الاحتمالية. واستُخدمت الدراسة ستين من الأسنان الأمامية الدائمة احادية الجذور ذات القنوات المستقيمة. بعد تحضير الاسنان تم حشو القنوات واروائها بأقماع الجوتابيركا ومالئ الفجوات ومن ثم تم الاحتفاظ بها لمدة اربعة عشر يوما في بيئة رطبة في درجة حرارة ٣٧ مئوية. ثم تم اختيار ثلاثة وثلاثين من الاسنان بصورة عشوائية لمجموعتي المراقبة (المجموعة الأولى) والمجموعة التجريبية (المجموعة الثانية). تمت عملية إزالة الجوتابيركا بمبارد الهيدستروم اليدوية في المجموعة الاولي ومبارد البروتيبر الممكنة المستخدمة في علاج الجذور وإعادة علاج الجذور في المجموعة الثانية. وتم الحصول على إشعاعات رقمية باستخدام برنامج كيرستريم ( كودك) إصدار رقم RVG VER.6.10.8.3-A ، وجرى تحليلها لمعرفة الفرق بين الشوائب التي تمثل بقايا الجوتابيركا. واستُخدم برنامج AutoCAD 2006 في توضيح قنوات الجذور وبقايا حشوات الجذور. واستُخدم اختبار العينة المستقلة t لمقارنة مجموع ما تبقى من الجوتابيركا في كلتا المجموعتين. النتائج: لم تتم ملاحظة أي فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية في بقايا حشو العصب باستخدام الطرق المختلفة التي تم اختبارها ومقارنتها. في كلا المجموعتين، كان الجزء المتبقي من حشو العصب محصورًا في الثلث الاسفل من الجذور. الاستنتاجات: تعد مبارد البروتيبر الممكنة ومبارد الهيدستروم اليدوية فعالة بنفس القدر لإزالة حشو العصب من الاسنان احادية الجذور ذات القنوات المستقيمة. Abstract: Objective: This research was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of manual H-files versus a combination of a Pro-Taper universal rotary canal preparation system and retreatment system in removing gutta-percha (GP) during endodontic retreatment, by using a digital radiography technique. Methods: This ex vivo study used a non-probability consecutive sampling technique. The study sample comprised 60 extracted anterior permanent teeth, each with one root with a straight root canal (RC). After preparation, RCs were obturated with GP and sealer. Subsequently, teeth were stored for 2 weeks in a humid environment at 37 °C. Thirty teeth each were randomly assigned to the control (group I), and experimental (group II) groups. GP removal was performed with H-files {group I) or a combination of a Pro-Taper universal rotary canal preparation system and retreatment system (group 2). Digital radiographs were acquired with Carestream digital radiovisiography software (Kodak; version-VER.6.10.8.3-A), and the presence of residual GP was analyzed. AutoCAD (2006) software was used to demarcate the RC and residual root filling. The residual GP in both groups was compared with independent sample t-tests. Results: The remaining root filling did not significantly differ when GP was removed with conventional Hedstrom files versus a combination of Pro-Taper Universal preparation and retreatment file systems. The residual GP was confined to the apical third of the canals in both groups. Conclusions: Pro-Taper Universal preparation and retreatment file systems have similar effectiveness to manual H-files in GP removal in straight canals.

Abstract: Objectives: This research was aimed at assessing comprehension, attitudes, and perspectives regarding artificial intelligence (AI) in dentistry. The null hypothesis was a lack of foundational understanding of AI in dentistry. Methods: This systematic review following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines was conducted in May 2023. The eligibility criteria included cross-sectional studies published in English until July 2023, focusing solely on dentists or dental students. Data on AI knowledge, use, and perceptions were extracted and assessed for bias risk with the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist. Results: Of 408 publications, 22 relevant articles were identified, and 13 studies were included in the review. The average basic AI knowledge score was 58.62 % among dental students and 71.75 % among dentists. More dental students (72.01 %) than dentists (62.60 %) believed in AI's potential for advancing dentistry. Conclusions: Thorough AI instruction in dental schools and continuing education programs for practitioners are urgently needed to maximize AI's potential benefits in dentistry. An integrated PhD program could drive revolutionary discoveries and improve patient care globally. Embracing AI with informed understanding and training will position dental professionals at the forefront of technological advancements in the field.

Abstract: Dental implants are prosthetic devices that are surgically placed in direct contact with the jawbone to support intra-oral functions and esthetics. Diabetes mellitus may contribute to peri-implant bone loss. During the last few years, there have been attempts to reduce this bone loss and improve the survival rate of implants. Metformin, an anti-diabetic drug known for its osteogenic properties, is thought to prevent peri-implant bone loss in diabetic patients. Although several studies have been conducted to study metformin's effect on diabetic and non-diabetic study models, no systematic review has analyzed and summarized these studies critically. Therefore, the objectives of this systematic review were to summarize the outcomes of these studies and critically appraise them. Seven studies were included in this systematic review. Four studies used only animal models, two used both animal and cell culture models, and one used only cell culture studies. The general characteristics and outcomes of the included studies were summarized, and Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments (ARRIVE) guidelines were used to assess the quality of the animal studies. In vitro studies indicate that metformin may induce stem cells to undergo osteoblastic differentiation to produce a higher amount of bone and may also improve osseointegration. Nevertheless, several studies had potential sources of bias. Therefore, it is recommended that emphasis be placed on increasing the quality of future animal studies and human trials to determine the effects of metformin on the osseointegration of dental implants. Future studies are needed with adequate follow-up to evaluate the efficacy of metformin in improving the osseointegration of dental implants.

Abstract: Objectives: Over the last few years, several studies have investigated the effect of laser treatment on the replantation of avulsed teeth. We conducted this study to systematically analyse and assess the outcomes and quality of these studies. Methods: Using the keywords ‘laser’, ‘tooth’, and ‘replantation’, two investigators conducted an electronic search of the PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, ISI Web of Knowledge and Google Scholar databases. Any studies not meeting the inclusion criteria were excluded. The focused question was ‘Does laser treatment influence the outcomes of tooth replantation?’ Results: Nine studies were included and assessed in this review. In the majority of the selected studies, laser treatment had a positive outcome on preventing root resorption and in promoting periodontal regeneration. However, only three studies were given a quality score of ‘medium’, while six were marked as ‘low’. Conclusion: Laser irradiation may reduce root resorption and favour periodontal regeneration following replantation of the avulsed tooth. However, more well-designed long-term animal and human studies are needed before lasers can be used clinically to improve the outcomes for replanted teeth.

Abstract: Objectives: This study aimed to determine the biaxial flexural strength (BFS) of resin composite materials at distinct deformation rates. Methods: Two micro-hybrid [Filtek Z100™ Restorative (Z100), Filtek™ Z250 (Z250)] and two nano-filled [Filtek™ Supreme XT Body (FSB), Filtek™ Supreme Translucent (FST)] composite resins were selected. Disc-shaped (12 × 1 mm) specimens were fabricated using nylon split moulds. Bar-shaped specimens (25 × 2 × 2 mm) were fabricated from each material to determine the flexural modulus. The specimens were tested for BFS and flexural modulus under dry and wet conditions after 1, 13, and 52 weeks. Results: The highest BFS was recorded for Z250 (162 ± 19 MPa), followed by FST (154 ± 16 MPa), Z100 (150 ± 18 MPa), and FSB (136 ± 18 MPa). The materials exhibited a clear trend of increase in BFS with deformation rate. Following immersion for 1 week, the BFS was 126 ± 18 MPa for Z100, and 124 ± 17 MPa for Z250, which were higher than those of FSB (99 ± 16 MPa) and FST (115 ± 19 MPa) under comparable conditions. There was a remarkable reduction in the flexural moduli of the specimens immersed for 1 week compared to those of the dry specimens: Z100 (from 18.3 ± 1.2 GPa for dry specimen to 15.7 ± 0.8 GPa after immersion for 1 week), Z250 (from 16.7 ± 0.8 GPa to 13.3 ± 1.4 GPa), FSB (from 13.7 ± 0.6 GPa to 11.0 ± 2.1 GPa) and FST (from 12.7 ± 2.3 GPa to 10.4 ± 1.0 GPa). Conclusion: This study concludes that the BFS and flexural moduli of resin-based dental restoratives decline when they are immersed in an aqueous medium until saturation with water. However, after equilibrium is established, the immersion medium does not affect the restorative materials further. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and severity of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders among undergraduate students. In addition, the severity of TMD was examined in terms of its relationship with gender, age and field of study. Methods: A total of 439 undergraduate students of both genders (age range: 20â27 years) who were studying at various colleges at Taibah University were invited to participate in this study. Each student was provided with a questionnaire, and the significance and purpose of the study were explained. The data were collected using Fonseca's questionnaire, an instrument that assessed the demographic characteristics of the students and included ten key questions. The severity of TMD was categorized as no, mild, moderate or severe. The data were analysed using SPSS Version 22 (IBM, Illinois, USA). The chi-square test was used to compare the data from different groups and to determine whether the differences were statistically significant. Results: Of those who were invited, 78 students did not return the questionnaires, whereas another 11 were excluded due to their submitting an incomplete questionnaire. A majority of the students reported no TMD (46.7%) or mild TMD (42.7%). A moderate level of TMD was reported by 8.8% of students. Only 1.7% of students reported severe TMD. No significant differences were observed in the severity of TMD in terms of student age or field of study. Conclusion: TMD is more prevalent among female students than male students. However, its occurrence is not affected by the age and field of study of the student. Objectives: Bisphosphonates (BPs) are a class of drugs that are used to treat osteoporosis. It has been suggested that BP coatings on dental implants have a positive effect on new bone formation. The purpose of this review is to analyse the currently available data concerning the clinical and experimental efficacy of BP-releasing titanium implants such that their potential in clinical oral implant dentistry may be ascertained. Methods: Based on a literature review, a focused research question was constructed: what is the effect of a BP-releasing coating on the osseointegration of titanium dental implant? The databases of PubMED/MEDLINE; ISI Web of Knowledge; Embase and Google Scholar were searched electronically using the keywords ‘dental implant’; ‘bisphosphonate’ and ‘titanium.’ The quality; general characteristics and outcomes of each study were summarized and analysed systematically. Results: A total of eleven articles fulfilled the criteria to be included in this review. Eight studies were experimental; two studies were clinical; and one study was experimental and clinical. In nine studies (82%), BP-coated implants resulted in higher osseointegration, as indicated by higher resonance frequency values, removal torque, bone-implant contact and new bone formation. In two studies (18%), there was no difference between the osseointegration of BP-coated implants and controls. Conclusions: Bisphosphonates-loaded implants may have a positive effect on osseointegration. However, more well-designed clinical studies are required to demonstrate their osseoconductive effects.

Purpose: To evaluate the value of using the visual information for reducing the level of dental fear and anxiety in patients undergoing teeth extraction under LA. Methods: A total of 64 patients were indiscriminately allotted to solitary of the study groups following reading the information sheet and signing the formal consent. If patient was in the control group, only verbal information and routine warnings were provided. If patient was in the study group, tooth extraction video was showed. The level of dental fear and anxiety was detailed by the patients on customary 100 mm visual analog scales (VAS), with “no dental fear and anxiety” (0 mm) and “severe dental distress and unease” (100 mm). Research has shown that tooth loss results in morphological changes in alveolar ridge that may influence the subsequent implant placement. Immediate implant placement was introduced as a possible means to limit bone resorption and reduce the number of surgical procedures following tooth extraction. Histological and clinical evidence from human clinical studies showing efficacy of immediate implants has come to light over the last decade or so. However, immediate implant placement is a challenging surgical procedure and requires proper case selection and surgical technique. Furthermore, there appears to be a lack of clinical guidelines for immediate implant placement case selection. Therefore, the aim of this mini-review is to analyze critical evidence from human studies in order to establish clinical guidelines which may help clinicians in case selection when considering immediate implant placement protocol.

The field of health has always emphasised on the use of natural products for curing diseases. There are varieties of natural products (such as silk, herbal tea, chitosan) used today in the biomedical application in treating a large array of systemic diseases. The natural product "Propolis" is a non-toxic resinous material having beneficial properties such as antimicrobial, anticancer, antifungal, antiviral and anti-inflammatory; hence gain the attention of researchers for its potential for bio-dental applications. The study aims to explore the properties and chemistry of propolis concerning biomedical and dental applications. In addition, status and scope of propolis for current and potential future in bio-dental applications have been discussed. This review gives an insight to the reader about the possible use of propolis in modern-day dentistry.

Context: Anxiety and distress regarding dental treatment is a major issue for dental patients and can be exaggerated in pediatric dental patients. Aims: The aim was to investigate how different methods of induction for general anesthesia affect children′s distress for dental procedures such as extraction of teeth. Subjects and Methods: This was an observational clinical study conducted at Manchester University Dental Hospital. The induction of anesthesia in children was achieved with either intravenous (I.V.) or a gaseous induction. The Modified Child Smiley Faces Scales were completed for children at various times intervals. Statistical Analysis Used: There were statistically significant differences between the mean distress scores for the I.V. and inhalation groups (P values from independent t-test: P < 0.001) was applied. Results: In gaseous induction group, the number of children who scored severe and very severe distress was greater than those who were in I.V. group. Gaseous induction was used for 23 children. Preoperatively, 56.5% children were in very severe distress, 17.4% in severe distress, 13% in moderate distress, 8.7% in mild distress and only one (4.3%) showed no distress. For I.V. induction, 11.2% children were in very severe distress, 9% in severe distress, and 9.6% in moderate distress, 24.2% in mild distress and 46.1% showed no distress. Conclusions: Gaseous induction anesthesia for extractions of teeth does produce high levels of distress than I.V. induction in children for dental extractions. There was no significant difference between both induction methods in terms of distress levels at the time of recovery and 15 min postoperatively.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate factors affecting oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients using removable dental prosthesis., Methods: The present study employed a cross sectional analytical design. A total of 200 patients participated and interviewed using a cross sectional analytical design. In the first section of the questionnaire patients were asked about demographic data whereas the second part of the questionnaire assessed medical history, oral habits, smoking status, oral hygiene habits and frequency of dental visit. The questionnaire also collected information regarding patient's removable prosthesis. Questionnaire of OHIP-DENT (Oral Health Impact Profile) was also employed to measure oral health quality of life (OHRQoL) on the domains of functional limitation (FL), physical pain (P1), psychological discomfort (P2), physical disability (D1), psychological disability (D2), social disability (D3) and handicap (H). Relationships between the demographic, socio-economic and education variables and others OHIP-EDENT scores were explored by comparing mean scores by applying ANOVA., Results: The study participants comprised of 107 males (53.5%) and 93 females (46.5%). Regarding oral care, participants reporting to visit their dentist within one year were 40.0%. The highest score was recorded for the functional limitation (FL) domain (15.62±6.6), followed by social disability (D3) (15.23±5.06) and physical pain (P1) (14.28±4.8). The respective scores for physical (D1) and psychological disability (D2) and handicap (H) were 10.47±4.84, 11.32±5.38 and 12.45±4.50 respectively., Conclusions: Removable partial denture patients showed minimum problems with mastication, social compromise and functional discomfort.
