Abstract

In this article, a new natural discrete analog of the one parameter polynomial exponential(OPPE) distribution as a mixture of a number of negative binomial distributions has been proposed and is called as a natural discrete one parameter polynomial exponential (NDOPPE) distribution. This distribution is a generalized version of natural discrete Lindley (NDL) distribution, proposed and studied by Ahmed and Afify (2019). Two estimators viz., MLE and UMVUE of the PMF and the CDF of a NDOPPE distribution have been derived. The estimators have been compared with respect to their MSEs. Simulation study has been conducted to verify the consistency of the estimators. A real data illustration has been reported.

Abstract

In this article, we have considered one parameter polynomial exponential (OPPE) distribution. The exponential, Lindley, length-biased Lindley and Sujatha distribution are particular cases. Two estimators viz, MLE and UMVUE of the PDF and the CDF of the OPPE distribution have been discussed. The estimation issue of the length-biased Lindley and Sujatha distribution have been considered in detail. The estimators have been compared in MSE sense. Monte Carlo simulations and real data analysis are performed to compare the performances of the proposed methods of estimation.

12. Phase sensitive detection of extent of corrosion in steel reinforcing bars using eddy currents

Abstract

Corrosion of steel bars in reinforced cement concrete (RCC) structures leads to premature deterioration and increase in life cycle maintenance costs. Non-destructive testing (NDT) of incipient corrosion has been an impending task in this domain. We present a low cost sensing platform based on eddy current detection using anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) sensor to measure the extent of corrosion in steel reinforcing bars (rebars). The scheme employs phase-sensitive detection, wherein the phase shift in the sensor output (proportional to surface conductivity of the rebar) relative to the reference stimulus is measured by a lock-in amplifier and used to distinguish corroded and non-corroded rebars. The proof-of-concept sensor demonstration is able to resolve varying extents of rebar corrosion and can find potential applications as an NDT tool in a variety of industries.

Abstract

The present study speaks of development of a two-dimensional phase field (PF) model to simulate the cooling slope rheoprocessing of the novel Al-15Mg2Si-4.5Si composite, in view of process optimization and investigation of physics of microstructure formation. In case of cooling slope rheoprocessing, the composite melt starts losing its superheat once it impinges over the slope and transforms into semi-solid slurry during its length of travel over the slope. After experiencing shear flow over the slope, the melt fills an isothermal slurry holding furnace where it undergoes coarsening for a certain length of time. The present PF model simulates how heterogeneous nucleation of solid grains is supposed to happen within the melt, during cooling slope processing, adopting a seed undercooling-based nucleation model. Moreover, the PF model implements a grain coarsening model to simulate the isothermal globularization process of the evolving solid grains of primary Mg2Si and primary Al phases. The interfacial free energy of Al–melt interface is taken from literature, whereas a molecular dynamics (MD) model is employed to estimate the interfacial energy value of the Mg2Si–melt interface. The cooling rate values employed in the present PF model for different melt pouring temperatures are determined experimentally from initial trial experiments, whereas the validation experiments are performed to collect the slurry samples from chosen locations of the melt flow front over the slope and from isothermally kept slurry holding furnace. Micrographs obtained from the above samples confirm the accuracy of the developed 2D PF model to capture microstructural morphology of the composite slurry. Moreover, the model predictions of quantitative parameters such as grain diameter, shape factor/sphericity, and solid fraction are found to be close to the experimental measurements. For example, a representative simulated value of grain size and sphericity of primary Mg2Si grains, after 8 minutes of slurry holding, are as follows: 24.01 and 0.834 μm, whereas the corresponding experimental values are 29.0 and 0.885 μm, respectively. Abstract

In this study, a comprehensive molecular dynamics (MD) study on the structural evolution of alumina nanoparticles during sintering has been performed using two-sphere model. The effect of variation in particle size and heating rate are investigated. A power-law equation is proposed to explain the increase of dimensionless neck radius, with the increasing sintering time. Two important parameters are extracted from the equation: a characteristic time related to the initiation of neck formation and an exponent related to the rate of neck growth. The variation of shrinkage and density of particles are also used to characterise the sintering of alumina nanoparticles. One of the novel findings is that instead of temporal variation of dimensionless neck radius, its variation with shrinkage can be used to correlate simulation and experimental results. From the results of the variation of heating rate, it is revealed that a lower heating rate initiates neck formation at a lower temperature. The sintering temperature has been successfully estimated for micron-sized particles from the results of molecular dynamics simulation using Herring's scaling law. Moreover, it is evident from experimental validation that the developed MD model can successfully predict the average dimensionless neck size value of micro injection moulded alumina, at sintered state, and thereby can be effectively used as a process control tool.
