Abstract

Murugesan K, Koroth J, Srinivasan PP, et al. Int J Nanomedicine. 2019;14:5257–5270. The Editor and Publisher of International Journal of Nanomedicine wish to retract the published article. Concerns were raised regarding the alleged duplication of H&E images in Figure 8. Specifically, Figure 8, ST06, Tumor image appears to be partly duplicated with the Figure 8, ST06-AgNPs, Tumor image. The authors responded to our queries but were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the alleged duplication, nor were they able to provide original data that could adequately verify the findings. The Editor requested to retract the article and the authors agreed with this decision. We have been informed in our decision-making by our policy on publishing ethics and integrity and the COPE guidelines on retractions. The retracted article will remain online to maintain the scholarly record, but it will be digitally watermarked on each page as “Retracted”. This retraction relates to this paper

Abstract

Paratelenomus anu Rajmohana, Sachin & Talamas, sp. nov. (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) is an egg parasitoid of the kudzu bug, Megacopta cribraria (Fab.) (Hemiptera: Plataspidae). It is morphologically and genetically distinct from P. saccharalis (Dodd), a well-known egg parasitoid of the same host. Paratelenomus anu is here described from India and diagnosed from other species of Paratelenomus Dodd. This parasitoid can be reared easily, has high rates of parasitism, and thus may be significant for the biological control of M. cribraria. Phoresy is documented in P. anu and provides the first known example of this behavior in Paratelenomus. Paratelenomus longus (Kozlov & Lê) syn. nov. and P. mangrovus Rajmohana & Narendran, syn. nov. are treated as junior synonyms of P. tetartus (Crawford), and P. obtusus (Lê) syn. nov. is treated as a junior synonym of P. saccharalis.

In the present study, we aimed at the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using a curcumin derivative, ST06. Although, the individual efficacies of silver nanoparticles or curcumin derivatives have been studied previously, the synergistic cytotoxic effects of curcumin derivative and silver nanoparticles in a single nanoparticulate formulation have not been studied earlier specifically on animal models. This makes this study novel compared to the earlier synthesized curcumin derivative or silver nanoparticles studies. The aim of the study was to synthesize ST06 coated silver nanoparticles (ST06-AgNPs) using ST06 as both reducing and coating agent.Methods: The synthesized nanoparticles AgNPs and ST06-AgNPs were characterised for the particle size distribution, morphology, optical properties and surface charge by using UV-visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Elemental composition and structural properties were studied by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). The presence of ST06 as capping agent was demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).Results: The synthesized nanoparticles (ST06-AgNPs) were spherical and had a size distribution in the range of 50–100 nm. UV-Vis spectroscopy displayed a specific silver plasmon peak at 410 nm. The in vitro cytotoxicity effects of ST06 and ST06-AgNPs, as assessed by MTT assay, showed significant growth inhibition of human cervical cancer cell line (HeLa). In addition, studies carried out in EAC tumor-induced mouse model (Ehrlich Ascites carcinoma) using ST06-AgNPs, revealed that treatment of the animals with these nanoparticles resulted in a significant reduction in the tumor growth, compared to the control group animals.Conclusion: In conclusion, green synthesized ST06-AgNPs exhibited superior anti-tumor efficacy than the free ST06 or AgNPs with no acute toxicity under both in vitro and in vivo conditions. The tumor suppression is associated with the intrinsic apoptotic pathway. Together, the results of this study suggest that ST06-AgNPs could be considered as a potential option for the treatment of solid tumors.Keywords: silver nanoparticles, anticancer, Ehrlich Ascites carcinoma, apoptosis

Abstract

Identifying a structural brain lesion on MRI has important implications in epilepsy and is the most important factor that correlates with seizure freedom after surgery in patients with drug-resistant focal onset epilepsy. However, at conventional magnetic field strengths (1.5 and 3T), only approximately 60%-85% of MRI examinations reveal such lesions. Over the last decade, studies have demonstrated the added value of 7T MRI in patients with and without known epileptogenic lesions from 1.5 and/or 3T. However, translation of 7T MRI to clinical practice is still challenging, particularly in centers new to 7T, and there is a need for practical recommendations on targeted use of 7T MRI in the clinical management of patients with epilepsy. The 7T Epilepsy Task Force-an international group representing 21 7T MRI centers with experience from scanning over 2,000 patients with epilepsy-would hereby like to share its experience with the neurology community regarding the appropriate clinical indications, patient selection and preparation, acquisition protocols and setup, technical challenges, and radiologic guidelines for 7T MRI in patients with epilepsy. This article mainly addresses structural imaging; in addition, it presents multiple nonstructural MRI techniques that benefit from 7T and hold promise as future directions in epilepsy. Answering to the increased availability of 7T MRI as an approved tool for diagnostic purposes, this article aims to provide guidance on clinical 7T MRI epilepsy management by giving recommendations on referral, suitable 7T MRI protocols, and image interpretation.

Abstract

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major cause of skin and soft tissue infections. One of the highly successful and rapidly disseminating clones is MRSA ST22 commonly associated with skin tropism. Here we show that a naturally occurring single amino acid substitution (tyrosine to cysteine) at position 223 of AgrC determines starkly different ST22 S. aureus virulence phenotypes, e.g. cytotoxic or colonizing, as evident in both in vitro and in vivo skin infections. Y223C amino acid substitution destabilizes AgrC-AgrA interaction leading to a colonizing phenotype characterized by upregulation of bacterial surface proteins. The colonizing phenotype strains cause less severe skin tissue damage, show decreased susceptibility towards the antimicrobial LL-37 and induce autophagy. In contrast, cytotoxic strains with tyrosine at position 223 of AgrC cause infections characterized by inflammasome activation and severe skin tissue pathology. Taken together, the study demonstrates how a single amino acid substitution in the histidine kinase receptor AgrC of ST22 strains determines virulence properties and infection outcome.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe two methods of face-harvesting techniques -- a skin and soft tissue flap and a combined osteocutaneous flap -- and to demonstrate the compatibility between donor and recipient in a human fresh cadaver model.In fresh human cadavers the skin and soft tissue of the face (type 1) and a combined osteocutaneous flap (including a le Fort III segment, type 2) were harvested. The faces were subsequently exchanged among the donor crania, simulating full-face transplantation.Both flaps are based on the external blood supply of the faciotemporal vessels and the external jugular vein. The end branches of the trigeminal nerve could potentially be used for restoration of sensation (type 1 flap). With type 2 flaps the facial expression may be restored with the inclusion of the facial nerve. Four morphological parameters determine the donor/recipient compatibility: skin color and texture, anthropometric head dimensions, specific soft tissue components (nose, lip, cheek, and eyebrow), and gender.Apart from ethical considerations, long-term immunosuppression will remain the limiting factor of full facial transplantation in the near future.

Abstract

Summary: Although these entities are histologically similar, recent advances in molecular genetics have allowed the distinction of central nervous system extraosseous Ewing sarcoma (CNS-EES) from central primitive neuroectodermal tumors (c-PNET) including medulloblastoma and supratentorial PNET. We present 2 cases of pathologically confirmed CNS-EES. Knowledge of CNS-EES as a distinct entity enables the neuroradiologist to suggest the proper diagnosis and the need for special immuno-histochemical and molecular studies to confirm the diagnosis. Because treatment and prognosis are vastly different, the proper diagnosis of CNS-EES versus c-PNET is critical.
