Abstract

We present LEMMING, a modular log-linear model that jointly models lemmatization and tagging and supports the integration of arbitrary global features. It is trainable on corpora annotated with gold standard tags and lemmata and does not rely on morphological dictionaries or analyzers. LEMMING sets the new state of the art in token-based statistical lemmatization on six languages; e.g., for Czech lemmatization, we reduce the error by 60%, from 4.05 to 1.58. Abstract

Individuals and organizations cope with an always-growing amount of data, which is heterogeneous in its contents and formats. An adequate data management process yielding data quality and control over its lifecycle is a prerequisite to getting value out of this data and minimizing inherent risks related to multiple usages. Common data governance frameworks rely on people, policies, and processes that fall short of the overwhelming complexity of data. Yet, harnessing this complexity is necessary to achieve high-quality standards. The latter will condition any downstream data usage outcome, including generative artificial intelligence trained on this data. In this paper, we report our concrete experience establishing a simple, cost-efficient framework that enables metadata-driven, agile and (semi-)automated data governance (i.e. Data Governance 4.0). We explain how we implement and use this framework to integrate 25 years of clinical study data at an enterprise scale in a fully productive environment. The framework encompasses both methodologies and technologies leveraging semantic web principles. We built a knowledge graph describing avatars of data assets in their business context, including governance principles. Multiple ontologies articulated by an enterprise upper ontology enable key governance actions such as FAIRification, lifecycle management, definition of roles and responsibilities, lineage across transformations and provenance from source systems. This metadata model is the keystone to data governance 4.0: a semi-automatised data management process that considers the business context in an agile manner to adapt governance constraints to each use case and dynamically tune it based on business changes.

Abstract

In Gurau and Keppler 2022 (arXiv:2207.01993), a relation between orthogonal and symplectic tensor models with quartic interactions was proven. In this paper, we provide an alternative proof that extends to polynomial interactions of arbitrary order. We consider tensor models of order D with no symmetry under permutation of the indices that transform in the tensor product of D fundamental representations of O(N) and Sp(N). Abstract

We present a near real-time method for 6-DoF tracking of an unknown object from a monocular RGBD video sequence, while simultaneously performing neural 3D reconstruction of the object. Our method works for arbitrary rigid objects, even when visual texture is largely absent. The object is assumed to be segmented in the first frame only. No additional information is required, and no assumption is made about the interaction agent. Key to our method is a Neural Object Field that is learned concurrently with a pose graph optimization process in order to robustly accumulate information into a consistent 3D representation capturing both geometry and appearance. A dynamic pool of posed memory frames is automatically maintained to facilitate communication between these threads. Our approach handles challenging sequences with large pose changes, partial and full occlusion, untextured surfaces, and specular highlights. We show results on HO3D, YCBInEOAT, and BEHAVE datasets, demonstrating that our method significantly outperforms existing approaches. Project page: https://bundlesdf.github.io, Comment: CVPR 2023

Abstract

The satellite of (225088) 2007 OR10 was discovered on archival Hubble Space Telescope images and along with new observations with the WFC3 camera in late 2017 we have been able to determine the orbit. The orbit's notable eccentricity, e$\approx$0.3, may be a consequence of an intrinsically eccentric orbit and slow tidal evolution, but may also be caused by the Kozai mechanism. Dynamical considerations also suggest that the moon is small, D$_{eff}$ $<$ 100 km. Based on the newly determined system mass of 1.75x10$^{21}$ kg, 2007 OR10 is the fifth most massive dwarf planet after Eris, Pluto, Haumea and Makemake. The newly determined orbit has also been considered as an additional option in our radiometric analysis, provided that the moon orbits in the equatorial plane of the primary. Assuming a spherical shape for the primary this approach provides a size of 1230$\pm$50 km, with a slight dependence on the satellite orbit orientation and primary rotation rate chosen, and a bulk density of 1.75$\pm$0.07 g cm$^{-3}$ for the primary. A previous size estimate that assumed an equator-on configuration (1535$^{+75}_{-225}$ km) would provide a density of 0.92$^{+0.46}_{-0.14}$ g cm$^{-3}$, unexpectedly low for a 1000 km-sized dwarf planet., Comment: Accepted for publication in Icarus

15. Reconstructing long-term woodland cover changes and their environmental legacy using Scottish estate plans (c.1740-1835) and GIS

Abstract

Understanding long-term woodland dynamics is regarded as essential to investigating the legacy of past human actions and adequately conserving woodland habitats of higher ecological and cultural value. In Scotland, direct evidence of woodland extent and management is usually scarce and incomplete before the mid-nineteenth century First Edition Ordnance Survey maps (OS). For this PhD thesis, historical plans of private estates, underutilised in the UK, are proposed to fill this gap. Although each of these plans covers only a small area, they were drawn at large scale, permitting a detailed and accurate depiction of woodland prior to the First Edition OS. This research collates 352 Scottish estate plans, dated c.1740 to c.1835, from both private and public collections. Hundreds of these plans are privately-owned and had been previously unavailable to researchers. A GIS-based method is implemented to integrate the spatial information of a large variety of historical plans into a homogenous database. The consistency in the depiction, accuracy and reliability of estate plans enables spatially explicit reconstructions of the woodland cover extent for two time series, namely T1 (1740-1799) and T2 (1801-1833). These reconstructions cover a total of 107,700 ha in Nithsdale and Annandale (Dumfries and Galloway) and can be compared with the First Edition OS maps (i.e. T3, c.1860) and modern data (i.e. T4, 2014). The uncertainties resulting from the challenges of working on a large variety of plans drawn by different mapmakers are also assessed. This assessment uses a conceptual framework that explores in a chronological manner the uncertainty arisen from the estate plans production to their practical use for research on woodland cover changes. Quantitative analysis based on the reconstructions shows a marked and consistent growth in woodland cover during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While the woodland covered about 3% of the study area in T1, it increased to 4.5% in T2, and to between 6.5 and 8.5% in T3. The lowest coverage in the study area occurred, at the latest, some time in the mid-eighteenth century with an upper estimate of 2.5% of woodland coverage. Although it is not possible to determine to what extent the trends observed in the study area apply to the rest of Scotland, this research casts doubt on the methods and assumptions that may have led previous research to overestimate the amount of past woodland cover for the whole Scotland. Change detection analysis allowed mapping and quantification of where the woodland was new, lost or extant between two time series. Trajectory analysis enabled the tracking, mapping and categorising of the various historical trajectories of present-day broadleaved woodland since the eighteenth century. Along with the study of various woodland metrics, these spatial analyses underline how the present-day woodland cover has been progressively shaped by plantations and clearance at different spatio-temporal rates. In addition, a modelling approach using binary logistic regression allows a better understanding of past woodland distribution and changes in relation to landscape physical contexts such as slope steepness, elevation, soils and distance to the nearest streams. Hence, these models highlight changes in woodland plantation practices over time and space. Other historical sources, including the first and second Statistical Accounts of Scotland (1791-1845), offer a complementary insight into tree composition of past woodland cover, management practices and the reasons that encouraged planting woodland. These sources indicate how the temporal resolution of the mapping reconstruction may still underestimate the magnitude of past woodland changes. Estate plans can also provide a rare insight into the history and ecology of the so-called 'ancient woodland sites'. Defined in Scotland as continuously wooded since c.1750, these sites have been compiled in the Scottish Ancient Woodland Inventory (AWI) using evidence from official historical mapping, namely the Roy map (c.1750) and First Edition OS mapping (c.1860). At present, ancient woodlands are recognised as areas of greater ecological and cultural value that deserve priority for UK woodland conservation. A comparison between the Scottish AWI and the woodland reconstructions in T1 and T2 indicates that the former is largely inaccurate. The amount of 'pseudo-ancient woodland' - of more recent origin than expected in the AWI - is estimated to reach at least 40% of the woodland compiled in the AWI. This discrepancy is discussed in the light of a new assessment of spatial accuracy of the Roy map and First Edition OS maps. In addition, the logistic regression models of past woodland cover can help distinguishing the pseudo-ancient woodland from the probable ancient woodland in the AWI. Using evidence from estate plans, 41 native woodland sites of different continuity classes were selected for botanical survey. Although ancient woodland sites are likely to exhibit more species supposed to be 'indicators' of ancient woodland, several recent woodland sites are very similar in plant assemblage to those of ancient woodlands. The occurrence of many indicator species of ancient woodland in non-ancient woodland habitats indicates how rapidly these species can establish themselves in recent woodlands, helping to blur the distinction between woodland habitats of different continuities. While critically assessing the current criteria for defining ancient woodland and the applicability of those criteria to woodland conservation, this study suggests that, depending on the connectivity to ancient woodland, environmental conditions and history of woodland, relatively recent plantations (i.e. plantations made after c.1750) could deserve the same recognition as ancient woodland for conservation.

Our aims are to determine flux densities and their photometric accuracy for a set of seventeen stars that range in flux from intermediately bright (<2.5 Jy) to faint (>5 mJy) in the far-infrared (FIR). We also aim to derive signal-to-noise dependence with flux and time, and compare the results with predictions from the Herschel exposure-time calculation tool. The PACS faint star sample has allowed a comprehensive sensitivity assessment of the PACS photometer. Accurate photometry allows us to establish a set of five FIR primary standard candidates, namely alpha Ari, epsilon Lep, omega,Cap, HD41047 and 42Dra, which are 2 -- 20 times fainter than the faintest PACS fiducial standard (gamma Dra) with absolute accuracy of <6%. BACKGROUND: Although plausible from a pathophysiological point of view, robust evidence for effects of transportation noise on mental health remains scarce. Meanwhile, psychiatric diseases are among the most prevalent noncommunicable diseases worldwide, and suicide as a mortality outcome highly connected to mental disorders presents a pressing public health issue. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between source-specific transportation noise, particulate matter (PM) air pollution, residential greenness, and suicide by means of a nationwide cohort study. METHODS: Road traffic, railway and aircraft noise exposure as well as exposure to air pollution [PM with aerodynamic diameter [less than or equal to] 2.5 [micro]m (P[M.sub.2.5])] and greenness [normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)] were linked to 5.1 million adults (age 15 y and older) in the Swiss National Cohort, accounting for their address history. Mean noise exposure in 5-y periods was calculated. Individuals were followed for up to 15 y (2001-2015). Time-varying Cox regression models were applied to deaths by suicide (excluding assisted suicide). Models included all three noise sources, P[M.sub.2.5], and NDVI plus individual and spatial covariates, including socioeconomic status. Effect modification by sex, age, socioeconomic indicators, and degree of urbanization was explored. RESULTS: During the follow-up, there were 11,265 suicide deaths (10.4% poisoning, 33.3% hanging, 28.7% firearms, 14.7% falls). Road traffic and railway noise were associated with total suicides [hazard ratios: 1.040; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.015, 1.065; and 1.022 (95% CI: 1.004, 1.041) per 10 dB day-evening-night level (Lden)], whereas for aircraft noise, a risk increase starting from 50 dB was masked by an inverse association in the very low exposure range (30-40 dB). Associations were stronger for females than males. The results were robust to adjustment for residential greenness and air pollution. CONCLUSION: In this longitudinal, nationwide cohort study, we report a robust association between exposure to road traffic and railway noise and risk of death by suicide after adjusting for exposure to air pollution and greenness. Abstract

A 3He sorption cooler produced the operational temperature of 285mK for the bolometer arrays of the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) instrument of the Herschel Space Observatory. This cooler provided a stable hold time between 60 and 73h, depending on the operational conditions of the instrument. The respective hold time could be determined by a simple functional relation established early on in the mission and reliably applied by the scientific mission planning for the entire mission. After exhaustion of the liquid 3He due to the heat input by the detector arrays, the cooler was recycled for the next operational period following a well established automatic procedure. We give an overview of the cooler operations and performance over the entire mission and distinguishing in-between the start conditions for the cooler recycling and the two main modes of PACS photometer operations. As a spin-off, the cooler recycling temperature effects on the Herschel cryostat 4He bath were utilized as an alternative method to dedicated Direct Liquid Helium Content Measurements in determining the lifetime of the liquid Helium coolant., Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures, accepted in Experimental Astronomy

Abstract

It has been documented that musicians are at risk for hearing loss due to hazardous levels of music exposure. Research has shown that musicians are three to four times more likely to develop hearing loss than non-musicians. Although music exposure is often recreational for the general public, hearing loss is an occupational risk for this population that can have psychosocial and occupational consequences. However, musicians have been historically excluded from hearing conservation program regulations and standards, presenting a critical hearing healthcare disparity. Due to musicians' unique, cumulative lifetime exposure, an approach for hearing conservation education and intervention should be implemented at an earlier age, such as at the collegiate level. Universities and music conservatories are uniquely positioned to educate these students regarding their exposure and hearing loss risks, as well as interventions such as audiologic screenings and hearing protection. This document seeks to examine the risk of hearing loss for student musicians, investigate what hearing conservation efforts have been implemented for these students, and ultimately propose a feasible, streamlined, evidence-based recommendation for a hearing conservation program. This document reports findings from seven primary studies, other clinical guidelines, and literature sources to provide an interdepartmental, multi-process approach to hearing conservation at the university level. This proposal can be utilized for student musicians, faculty, and staff, which can have long-term effects on quality of life and occupational pursuits.

Abstract

Context : AKARI is the first Japanese astronomical satellite dedicated to infrar ed astronomy. One of the main purposes of AKARI is the all-sky survey performed with six infrared bands between 9 and 200um during the period from 2006 May 6 to 2007 August 28. In this paper, we present the mid-infrared part (9um and 18um b ands) of the survey carried out with one of the on-board instruments, the Infrar ed Camera (IRC). Aims : We present unprecedented observational results of the 9 and 18um AKARI al l-sky survey and detail the operation and data processing leading to the point s ource detection and measurements. Methods : The raw data are processed to produce small images for every scan and point sources candidates, above the 5-sigma noise level per single scan, are der ived. The celestial coordinates and fluxes of the events are determined statisti cally and the reliability of their detections is secured through multiple detect ions of the same source within milli-seconds, hours, and months from each other. Results : The sky coverage is more than 90% for both bands. A total of 877,091 s ources (851,189 for 9um, 195,893 for 18um) are confirmed and included in the cur rent release of the point source catalogue. The detection limit for point source s is 50mJy and 90mJy for the 9um and 18um bands, respectively. The position accu racy is estimated to be better than 2". Uncertainties in the in-flight absolute flux calibration are estimated to be 3% for the 9um band and 4% for the 18um ban d. Abstract

We present the characterization and calibration of the Slow-Scan observation mode of the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) onboard the AKARI satellite. The FIS, one of the two focal-plane instruments on AKARI, has four photometric bands between 50--180 um with two types of Ge:Ga array detectors. In addition to the All-Sky Survey, FIS has also taken detailed far-infrared images of selected targets by using the Slow-Scan mode. The sensitivity of the Slow-Scan mode is one to two orders of magnitude better than that of the All-Sky Survey, because the exposure time on a targeted source is much longer. The point spread functions (PSFs) were obtained by observing several bright point-like objects such as asteroids, stars, and galaxies. The derived full widths at the half maximum (FWHMs) are ~30'' for the two shorter wavelength bands and ~40'' for the two longer wavelength bands, being consistent with those expected by the optical simulation, although a certain amount of excess is seen in the tails of the PSFs. The flux calibration has been performed by the observations of well-established photometric calibration standards (asteroids and stars) in a wide range of fluxes. Abstract

We present a careful analysis of the point source detection limit of the AKARI All-Sky Survey in the WIDE-S 90 $\mu$m band near the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP). Timeline Analysis is used to detect IRAS sources and then a conversion factor is derived to transform the peak timeline signal to the interpolated 90 $\mu$m flux of a source. Combined with a robust noise measurement, the point source flux detection limit at S/N $>5$ for a single detector row is $1.1\pm0.1$ Jy which corresponds to a point source detection limit of the survey of $\sim$0.4 Jy. Wavelet transform offers a multiscale representation of the Time Series Data (TSD). We calculate the continuous wavelet transform of the TSD and then search for significant wavelet coefficients considered as potential source detections. To discriminate real sources from spurious or moving objects, only sources with confirmation are selected. In our multiscale analysis, IRAS sources selected above $4\sigma$ can be identified as the only real sources at the Point Source Scales. We also investigate the correlation between the non-IRAS sources detected in Timeline Analysis and cirrus emission using wavelet transform and contour plots of wavelet power spectrum. It is shown that the non-IRAS sources are most likely to be caused by excessive noise over a large range of spatial scales rather than real extended structures such as cirrus clouds., Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Variants in the UNC45A cochaperone have been recently associated with a syndrome combining diarrhea, cholestasis, deafness, and bone fragility. Yet the mechanism underlying intestinal failure in UNC45A deficiency remains unclear. Here, biallelic variants in UNC45A were identified by next-generation sequencing in 6 patients with congenital diarrhea. Corroborating in silico prediction, variants either abolished UNC45A expression or altered protein conformation. Myosin VB was identified by mass spectrometry as client of the UNC45A chaperone and was found misfolded in [UNC45A.sup.KO] Caco-2 cells. In keeping with impaired myosin VB function, [UNC45A.sup.KO] Caco-2 cells showed abnormal epithelial morphogenesis that was restored by full-length UNC45A, but not by mutant alleles. Patients and [UNC45A.sup.KO] 3D organoids displayed altered luminal development and microvillus inclusions, while 2D cultures revealed Rab11 and apical transporter mislocalization as well as sparse and disorganized microvilli. All those features resembled the subcellular abnormalities observed in duodenal biopsies from patients with microvillus inclusion disease. Finally, microvillus inclusions and shortened microvilli were evidenced in enterocytes from unc45a-deficient zebrafish. Preclinical and human physiological studies indicate that topical, selective TASK 1/3 K+ channel antagonism increases upper airway dilator muscle activity and reduces pharyngeal collapsibility during anesthesia and nasal breathing during sleep. The primary aim of this study was to determine the effects of BAY2586116 nasal spray on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity and whether individual responses vary according to differences in physiological responses and route of breathing. Ten people (5 females) with OSA [apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) = 47 ± 26 events/h (means ± SD)] who completed previous sleep physiology studies with BAY2586116 were invited to return for three polysomnography studies to quantify OSA severity. In random order, participants received either placebo nasal spray (saline), BAY2586116 nasal spray (160 lg), or BAY2586116 nasal spray (160 µg) restricted to nasal breathing (chinstrap or mouth tape). Physiological responders were defined a priori as those who had improved upper airway collapsibility (critical closing pressure ≥2 cmH2O) with BAY2586116 nasal spray (NCT04236440). There was no systematic change in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI3) from placebo versus BAY2586116 with either unrestricted or nasal-only breathing versus placebo (47 ± 26 vs. 43 ± 27 vs. 53 ± 33 events/h, P = 0.15). However, BAY2586116 (unrestricted breathing) reduced OSA severity in physiological responders compared with placebo (e.g., AHI3 = 28 ± 11 vs. 36 ± 12 events/h, P = 0.03 and ODI3 = 18 ± 10 vs. 28 ± 12 events/h, P ¼ 0.02). Morning blood pressure was also lower in physiological responders after BAY2586116 versus placebo (e.g., systolic blood pressure = 137 ± 24 vs. 147 ± 21 mmHg, P < 0.01). In conclusion, BAY2586116 reduces OSA severity during sleep in people who demonstrate physiological improvement in upper airway collapsibility. Background: It has recently been demonstrated that the importance of the auditory system’s contribution to the perception of posture and mobility increases in cases where input from other systems, such as vestibular peripheral, somatosensory, and visual, is reduced or compromised There is a growing interest in how auditory cues serve as an additional input that aids in postural stability, gait and balance, and self-motion perception. Recent evidence from other investigators reveals that auditory information may be used to improve all of these, but the process is poorly understood and requires further research. However, it would appear that preliminary information from these studies makes a strong case for clinicians to consider the importance of audition when developing treatment plans for people with hearing loss that may also be experiencing ongoing vestibular involvement. This research project aims to determine the effect of hearing status on static stability while standing and dynamic movement by measuring postural sway, gait speed, and step length using multiple wireless gait sensors. Methods: Individuals were fitted with an array of Opal sensors and were asked to complete five randomly ordered tasks (aka “conditions”). Each condition began with a measure of postural sway as a baseline. Vision was denied in all but one condition. Postural sway was measured by having participants stand upright with their feet at shoulder width, lined up at the starting mark with hands on their hips for 30 seconds. Participants then would complete another postural sway measure that immediately preceded the dynamic gait task where participants would walk down the track and return to the start position. For each “sway into walk” condition visual cues and auditory input were manipulated. Abstract

Prior to fitting a hearing aid, it is critical to ensure that the device's electroacoustic performance complies with the safety standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO) (2004) and/or the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) (2014). This involves verifying each hearing aid's performance through electroacoustic analysis to ensure that it satisfies the expected specifications (Mueller & Bentler, 2019). This process requires the involvement of a well-trained individual capable of operating a certified hearing aid test box and utilizing an established specification sheet from the hearing aid manufacturer as a guideline to determine whether a specific hearing aid meets specified performance standards (Mueller & Bentler, 2019). However, underserved communities encounter economic barriers that impede their access to electroacoustically verified hearing aids, and there may be a shortage of trained professionals available to verify the hearing aid's performance before the fitting appointment (WHO, 2017). Additionally, in some cases, hearing aids provided for fitting in low to middle income countries are not always provided with the specification sheets required in this country. The ALPS hearing aids are an example of low-cost hearing aids with no specification sheets (ALPS Hearing, n.d.). To address this issue, the first objective of this study was to create a hearing aid specification sheet for the ALPS Erika i and P hearing aids. The overall hearing aid output of ten randomly selected ALPS Erika hearing aids, five of each model, was measured, compared across units for consistency, and averaged to create the specification sheet for these products. This process will help to determine if these hearing aids meet quality standards for the distribution and fitting of hearing aids in low to middle-income countries. Despite expensive life-sustaining interventions delivered in the ICU, mortality and morbidity in patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) remain unacceptably high. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has emerged as a promising intervention that may provide more efficacious supportive care to these patients. Improvements in technology have made ECMO safer and easier to use, allowing for the potential of more widespread application in patients with ARF. A greater appreciation of the complications associated with the placement of an artificial airway and mechanical ventilation has led clinicians and researchers to seek viable alternatives to providing supportive care in these patients. Abstract

In a first course in general relativity, the Schwarzschild spacetime is the most discussed analytic solution to Einstein's field equations. Unfortunately, there is rarely enough time to study the optical consequences of the bending of light for some advanced examples. In this paper, we present how the visual appearance of a thin disc around a Schwarzschild black hole can be determined interactively by means of an analytic solution to the geodesic equation processed on current high-performance graphical processing units. This approach can, in principle, be customized for any other thin disc in a spacetime with geodesics given in closed form. The interactive visualization discussed here can be used either in a first course in general relativity for demonstration purposes only or as a thesis for an enthusiastic student in an advanced course with some basic knowledge of OpenGL and a programming language. The "twin paradox" of special relativity offers the possibility of making interstellar flights within a lifetime. For very long journeys with velocities close to the speed of light, however, we have to take into account the expansion of the universe. Inspired by the work of Rindler on hyperbolic motion in curved spacetime, we study the worldline of a uniformly accelerated observer in de Sitter spacetime and the communication between the travelling observer and an observer at rest. This paper is intended to give graduate students who are familiar with special relativity and have some basic experience of general relativity a deeper insight into accelerated motion in general relativity, into the relationship between the proper times of different observers and the propagation of light signals between them, and into the use of compactification to describe the global structure of a relativistic model. 50. Studying Null and Time-Like Geodesics in the Classroom

Abstract

In a first course of general relativity, it is usually quite difficult for students to grasp the concept of a geodesic. It is supposed to be straight (auto-parallel) and yet it "looks" curved. In these situations, it is very useful to have some explicit examples available which show the different behaviour of geodesics. In this paper, we present "GeodesicViewer", an interactive tool for studying the behaviour of geodesics in many different spacetimes. The geodesics can be represented in several ways, depending on the spacetime in question. The use of a local reference frame and "Cartesian-like" coordinates helps the students to develop some intuition in various situations. We present the various features of "GeodesicViewer" in the form of readily formulated exercises for the students. (Contains 9 figures.)
