Abstract

Recent developments in diffusion models have advanced conditioned image generation, yet they struggle with reconstructing out-of-distribution (OOD) images, such as unseen tumors in medical images, causing "image hallucination" and risking misdiagnosis. We hypothesize such hallucinations result from local OOD regions in the conditional images. We verify that partitioning the OOD region and conducting separate image generations alleviates hallucinations in several applications. From this, we propose a training-free diffusion framework that reduces hallucination with multiple Local Diffusion processes. Our approach involves OOD estimation followed by two modules: a "branching" module generates locally both within and outside OOD regions, and a "fusion" module integrates these predictions into one. Our evaluation shows our method mitigates hallucination over baseline models quantitatively and qualitatively, reducing misdiagnosis by 40% and 25% in the real-world medical and natural image datasets, respectively. It also demonstrates compatibility with various pre-trained diffusion models.

Abstract

Language models demonstrate both quantitative improvement and new qualitative capabilities with increasing scale. Despite their potentially transformative impact, these new capabilities are as yet poorly characterized. In order to inform future research, prepare for disruptive new model capabilities, and ameliorate socially harmful effects, it is vital that we understand the present and near-future capabilities and limitations of language models. To address this challenge, we introduce the Beyond the Imitation Game benchmark (BIG-bench). BIG-bench currently consists of 204 tasks, contributed by 450 authors across 132 institutions. Task topics are diverse, drawing problems from linguistics, childhood development, math, common-sense reasoning, biology, physics, social bias, software development, and beyond. BIG-bench focuses on tasks that are believed to be beyond the capabilities of current language models. We evaluate the behavior of OpenAI's GPT models, Google-internal dense transformer architectures, and Switch-style sparse transformers on BIG-bench, across model sizes spanning millions to hundreds of billions of parameters. In addition, a team of human expert raters performed all tasks in order to provide a strong baseline. Findings include: model performance and calibration both improve with scale, but are poor in absolute terms (and when compared with rater performance); performance is remarkably similar across model classes, though with benefits from sparsity; tasks that improve gradually and predictably commonly involve a large knowledge or memorization component, whereas tasks that exhibit "breakthrough" behavior at a critical scale often involve multiple steps or components, or brittle metrics; social bias typically increases with scale in settings with ambiguous context, but this can be improved with prompting., Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures + references and appendices, repo: https://github.com/google/BIG-bench

Abstract

We report a simple but powerful method for engineering multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by using manipulation by an atomic-force microscope. The successive shell-by-shell extraction process of ultralong MWNTs allows the exposure of the innermost single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), which have diameters as small as ≈0.4 nm. The inner-shell extraction process changes the electrical characteristics of the MWNTs. Whereas the outer hollowed-out nanotubes show either metallic or semiconducting character, the innermost SWNTs of small diameter exhibit predominantly metallic transport properties. Abstract

Kirsten rat sarcoma virus (KRAS)-G12C inhibition causes remodeling of the lung tumor immune microenvironment and synergistic responses to anti-PD-1 treatment, but only in T cell infiltrated tumors. To investigate mechanisms that restrain combination immunotherapy sensitivity in immune-excluded tumors, we used imaging mass cytometry to explore cellular distribution in an immune-evasive KRAS mutant lung cancer model. Cellular spatial pattern characterization revealed a community where CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and dendritic cells were gathered, suggesting localized T cell activation. KRAS-G12C inhibition led to increased PD-1 expression, proliferation, and cytotoxicity of CD8+ T cells, and CXCL9 expression by dendritic cells, indicating an effector response. However, suppressive regulatory T cells (Tregs) were also found in frequent contact with effector T cells within this community. Lung adenocarcinoma clinical samples showed similar communities. Depleting Tregs led to enhanced tumor control in combination with anti-PD-1 and KRAS-G12C inhibitor. Combining Treg depletion with KRAS inhibition shows therapeutic potential for increasing antitumoral immune responses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. Statistical physics and information theory perspectives on complex systems and networks

Abstract

Complex physical, biological, and sociotehnical systems often display various phenomena that can't be understood using traditional tools of single disciplines. We describe work on developing and applying theoretical methods to understand phenomena of this type, using statistical physics, networks, spectral graph theory, information theory, and geometry. Financial systems--being highly stochastic, with agents in a complex environment--offer a unique arena to develop and test new ways of thinking about complexity. We develop a framework for analyzing market dynamics motivated by linear response theory, and propose a model based on agent behavior that naturally incorporates external influences. We investigate central issues such as price dynamics, processing and incorporation of information, and how agent behavior influences stability. We find that the mean field behavior of our model captures important aspects of return dynamics, and identify a stable-unstable regime transition depending on easily measurable model parameters. Our methods naturally connect external factors to internal market features and behaviors, and therefore address the crucial question of how system stability relates to agent behavior and external forces. Complex systems are often interconnected heterogeneously, with subunits influencing others counterintuitively due to specific details of their connections. Correlations are insufficient to characterize this due to, e.g., being symmetric and unable to discern directional relationships. We synthesize ideas from information and network theory to introduce a general tool for studying such relations in networks. Based on transfer entropy, we propose a measure--Effective Transfer Entropy Dependency--that measures influence by considering precisely how much of a source node's influence on targets is due to intermediates. We apply this to indices of the world's major markets, finding that our measure anticipates same-day correlation structure from lagged time-series data, and identifies influencers not found using standard correlations. Graphs are essential for understanding complex systems and datasets. We present new methods for identifying important structure in graphs, based on ideas from quantum information theory and statistical mechanics, and the renormalization group. We apply information geometry and spectral geometry to study the geometric structures that arise from graphs and random graph models, and suggest future extensions and applications to important problems like graph partitioning and machine learning.
