Today's increasingly global marketplace is resulting in more organizations sending employees to work outside their home countries as expatriates. Consequently, identifying factors influencing expatriates' cross-cultural adjustment at work and performance has become an increasingly important issue for both researchers and firms. Drawing on Kim et al. (2008 (See CR53)), this study examines the critical elements to expatriate success, which are the relationships between cultural intelligence, cross-cultural adjustment at work, and assignment-specific performance. One-hundred and fifty-one expatriates working within the energy sector, who were mainly located in the Middle East completed questionnaires, investigating: cultural intelligence (Cultural Intelligence Scale), cross-cultural adjustment (Expatriate Adjustment Scale), performance (Expatriate Contextual/Managerial Performance Skills), cultural distance (Kogut and Singh' index), length of staying in the host country and international work experience. Findings indicated that the four cultural intelligence components were directly and indirectly (through cross-cultural adjustment at work) associated with performance. The positive relationship between motivational cultural intelligence and cross-cultural adjustment at work was stronger when cultural distance was low, when expatriates were at the beginning of a new international assignment, and when they had lower experience. This paper examines how physical space shapes access to hockey arenas and participation in the game. Based on site observations and auto-ethnographic personal experience, this paper looks at how the concepts of 'multicultural common space' and 'affordance' can be used to better understand who participates in the sport and how space mediates participation in, and the imagination of, hockey and as an offshoot of Canadian identity. It uses the concept of 'affordance' to look at the opportunities people have to enter spaces and, in turn, the types of participation and interactions they have with hockey. More specifically, the paper explores if 'hockey spaces' are 'multicultural spaces' and, in turn, whether they are spaces that can foster shared identity and bonds. The paper examines 'hockey spaces' ranging from 'the pond' to the arena and all the way to the 'jumbotron' and discusses how specific hockey spaces shape who can participate in the game and how they can interact with others. The paper explores spaces as fields of interaction to understand the role that hockey plays in creating inclusive or prohibitive spaces for people from diverse backgrounds. The objective of this study is to examine the way youth negotiate belonging in two priority neighbourhoods--Malvern and Chester Li --in Toronto's east-end. It asks how youth experience belonging and negotiate difference in 'priority neighbourhoods'. In what ways does space shape belonging and difference? In contrast to previous studies that are spatially decontextualized, I argue that neighbourhoods are the very sites where youth negotiate differences and connections as they engage with peers, families, friends and residents. The importance of space in studying youth's sense of belonging is particularly valuable in Toronto where neighbourhoods are highly diverse and stratified. My work is inspired by Yuval-Davis's (2006) notion of belonging and the politics of belonging and Bourdieu's (1984) concepts of social field and habitus. I braid together a conceptual framework with the aim to achieve a more nuanced understanding of the ways power operates in the everyday context of 'priority neighbourhoods' and how processes of inclusion and exclusion and boundaries of belonging are demarcated.
