Abstract

C/2017 K2 (Pan-STARRS) is an Oort cloud comet discovered in May 2017. Ground observations have revealed that this long-period comet was active at heliocentric distance of 35 au. At such a distance, activity cannot be driven by the sublimation or the exothermic crystallization of water ice. We assume that the activity of comet C/2017 K2 may be driven by the sublimation of super-volatile ices such as CO and CO2. The nature of parent molecules driving the unprecedented activity of comet C/2017 K2 can be investigated by analyzing its spectrum. In particular, the analysis of atomic oxygen emission lines and the calculation of the green (5577.339 Å) to red (6300.304 and 6363.776 Å) line intensity ratio (hereafter G/R) can reveal the nature of molecules driving cometary activity. We report on the detection of atomic oxygen lines in the spectra of comet C/2017 K2 (Pan-STARRS) from high-resolution spectra obtained at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) on 24 June and 2 July 2022 using the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher North (HARPS-N) echelle spectrograph. We found G/R ratios equal to 0.29±0.02 (24 July 2022) and 0.27±0.01 (2 July 2022), which are consistent with a cometary activity driven by CO2, even if located at 2.8 au from the Sun. To better define the nature of the driving molecule, we measured the width of the three oxygen lines and found that the green line in the spectrum of 24 July 2022 is wider than either of the two red lines. This allows us to argue that CO2 is dissociated by highly energetic solar photons that produce O(1S) with a large excess velocity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To describe the evolution and results of health projects run in hospitals and managed by Nursing Coordinators.A convenience sample of 13 north Italian hospital, and a sample of 56 Nursing Coordinators with a permanent position from at least 1 year, was contacted. The following information was collected with a structured interview: projects run in 2009, topic, if bottom up or top down, number of staff involved and state (ended, still running, stopped).In 2009 Nursing Coordinators started 114 projects (mean 1.8±1.2 each): 94 (82.5%) were improvement projects, 17 (14.9%) accreditation, and 3 (2.6%) research. The projects involved 2.732 staff members (73.7%; average commitment 84 hours); 55 (48.2%) projects were still running, 52 (45.6%) completed, for 5 (4.4%) there was no assessment and 2 (1.8%) had been stopped.Nurses are regularly involved in several projects. A systematic monitoring of the results obtained and stabilization strategies are scarce. Due to the large number of resources invested, a correct management and the choice of areas relevant for patients' problems and needs are pivotal.

Abstract

Effects of different membranes and dialysis technologies on patient treatment tolerance and nutritional parameters. There is increasing evidence that the biochemical and cellular phenomena induced by blood/membrane/dialysate interactions contribute to dialysis-related intradialytic and long-term complications. However, there is a lack of large, prospective, randomized trials comparing biocompatible and bioincompatible membranes, and convective and diffusive treatment modalities. The primary aim of this prospective, randomized trial was to evaluate whether the use of polysulfone membrane with bicarbonate dialysate offers any advantages (in terms of treatment tolerance, nutritional parameters and pre-treatment β 2 -microglobulin levels) over a traditional membrane (Cuprophan®). A secondary aim was to assess whether the use of more sophisticated methods consisting of a biocompatible synthetic membrane with different hydraulic permeability at different ultrafiltration rate (highflux hemodialysis and hemodiafiltration) offers any further advantages. Seventy-one Centers were involved and stratified according to the availability of only the first two or all four of the following techniques: Cuprophan® hemodialysis (Cu-HD), low-flux polysulfone hemodialysis (LfPS-HD), high-flux polysulfone high-flux hemodialysis (HfPS-HD), and high-flux polysulfone hemodiafiltration (HfPS-HDF). The 380 eligible patients were randomized to one of the two or four treatments (132 to Cu-HD, 147 to LfPS-HD, 51 to HfPS-HD and 50 to HfPS-HDF). The follow-up was 24 months. No statistical difference was observed in the algebraic sum of the end points between bicarbonate dialysis with Cuprophan® or with low-flux polysulfone, or among the four dialysis methods under evaluation. There was a significant decrease in pre-dialysis plasma β 2 -microglobulin levels in high-flux dialysis of 9.04 ± 10.46 mg/liter (23%) and in hemodiafiltration of 6.35 ± 12.28 mg/liter (16%), both using high-flux polysulfone membrane in comparison with Cuprophan® and low-flux polysulfone membranes (P = 0.032). The significant decrease in pre-dialysis plasma β 2 -microglobulin levels could have a clinical impact when one considers that β 2 -microglobulin accumulation and amyloidosis are important long-term dialysis-related complications.

46. A New Hemodialysis Monitoring Device Using Filtrate Concentrations: A Comparison with Standard Serum Techniques

Abstract

A new device allowing sampling to be performed at any time, and using the filtrate obtained during hemodialysis is described. The device was used in 27 patients undergoing regular dialysis.Urea, creatinine and potassium were measured in samples taken both from arterial blood and from the device at 10, 40, 120 and 230 minutes after the beginning of the dialysis.The results were compared.A constant bias of about 10% was noted between the two sets of results but statistical analysis showed this was correctable.

Abstract

Recurring Slope Lineae (RSL) are narrow, dark features that typically source from rocky outcrops, incrementally lengthen down Martian steep slopes in warm seasons, fade in cold seasons and recur annually. In this study we report the first observations of RSL at Hale crater, Mars, during late southern summer by the Color and Surface Science Imaging System (CaSSIS) on board ESA’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). For the first time, we analyze images of RSL acquired during morning solar local times and compare them with High Resolution Imaging Sci- ence Experiment (HiRISE) observations taken in the afternoon. We find that RSL activity is correlated with the presence of steep slopes. Our thermal analysis establishes that local temperatures are high enough to allow either the melting of brines or deliquescence of salts during the observation period, but the slope and aspect distribu- tions of RSL activity predicted by these processes are not consistent with our observations. We do not find any significant relative albedo difference between morning and afternoon RSL. Differences above 11% would have been detected by our methodology, if present. This instead suggests that RSL at Hale crater are not caused by seeping water that reaches the surface, but are best explained as dry flows of granular material.
