2. New experimental $^{23}$Na($\alpha,p$)$^{26}$Mg Reaction Rate for Massive Star and Type-Ia Supernova models

The $^{23}$Na($\alpha,p$)$^{26}$Mg reaction has been identified as having a significant impact on the nucleosynthesis of several nuclei between Ne and Ti in type-Ia supernovae, and of $^{23}$Na and $^{26}$Al in massive stars. The reaction has been subjected to renewed experimental interest recently, motivated by high uncertainties in early experimental data and in the statistical Hauser-Feshbach models used in reaction rate compilations. Early experiments were affected by target deterioration issues and unquantifiable uncertainties. Three new independent measurements instead are utilizing inverse kinematics and Rutherford scattering monitoring to resolve this. In this work we present directly measured angular distributions of the emitted protons to eliminate a discrepancy in the assumptions made in the recent reaction rate measurements, which results in cross sections differing by a factor of 3. We derive a new combined experimental reaction rate for the $^{23}$Na($\alpha,p$)$^{26}$Mg reaction with a total uncertainty of 30% at relevant temperatures. Using our new $^{23}$Na($\alpha,p$)$^{26}$Mg rate, the $^{26}$Al and $^{23}$Na production uncertainty is reduced to within 8%. In comparison, using the factor of 10 uncertainty previously recommended by the rate compilation STARLIB, $^{26}$Al and $^{23}$Na production was changing by more than a factor of 2. In type-Ia supernova conditions, the impact on production of $^{23}$Na is constrained to within 15%., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

Background: The Efimov effect is a universal phenomenon in physics whereby three-body systems are stabilized via the interaction of an unbound two-body sub-systems. A hypothetical state in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ at 7.458 MeV excitation energy, comprising of a loose structure of three $\alpha$-particles in mutual two-body resonance, has been suggested in the literature to correspond to an Efimov state in nuclear physics. The existence of such a state has not been demonstrated experimentally. Method: Using the combined data sets from two recent experiments, one with the TexAT TPC to measure $\alpha$-decay and the other with Gammasphere to measure $\gamma$-decay of states in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ populated by $^{12}\mathrm{N}$ and $^{12}\mathrm{B}$ $\beta$-decay respectively, we achieve high sensitivity to states in close-proximity to the $\alpha$-threshold in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$. Results: No evidence of a state at 7.458 MeV is seen in either data set. Using a likelihood method, the 95\% C.L. $\gamma$-decay branching ratio is determined as a function of the $\beta$-decay feeding strength relative to the Hoyle state. In parallel, calculations of the triple-alpha reaction rate show the inclusion of the Efimov corresponds to a large increase in the reaction rate around $5 \times 10^{7}$ K. Conclusion: From decay spectroscopy - at the 95\% C.L., the Efimov state cannot exist at 7.458 MeV with any $\gamma$-decay branching ratio unless the $\beta$-strength is less than 0.7\% of the Hoyle state. This limit is evaluated for a range of different excitation energies and the results are not favorable for existence of the hypothetical Efimov state in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$. Furthermore, the triple-alpha reaction rate with the inclusion of a state between 7.43 and 7.53 MeV exceeds the rate required for stars to undergo the red giant phase., Comment: Submitted to PRL

The 16O nucleus was investigated through the 15N(p,{\alpha})12C reaction at excitation energies from Ex = 12 231 to 15 700 keV using proton beams from a 5 MeV Van de Graaff accelerator at beam energies of Ep = 331 to 3800 keV. Alpha decay from resonant states in 16O was strongly observed for ten known excited states in this region. The achievable acquisition rates of modern triggered nuclear physics experiments are heavily dependent on the readout software, in addition to the limits given by the utilized hardware. This paper presents an asynchronous readout scheme that significantly improves the livetime of an otherwise synchronous triggered VME-based data acquisition system. A detailed performance analysis of this and other readout schemes, in terms of the basic data transfer operations, is described. The performance of the newly developed scheme as well as synchronous schemes on two systems has been measured. The measurements show excellent agreement with the detailed description. For the second system, which previously used a synchronous readout, the deadtime ratio is at a 20 kHz trigger request frequency reduced by 30 % compared to the nearest contender, allowing 10 % more events to be recorded in the same time. The interaction between the network and readout tasks for single-core processors is also investigated. A livetime ratio loss of a few percent can be observed, depending on the size of the data chunks given to the operating system kernel for network transfer. We report the first detection of the second-forbidden, non-unique, $2^+\rightarrow 0^+$, ground-state transition in the $\beta$ decay of $^{20}$F. A low-energy, mass-separated $^{20}\rm{F}^+$ beam produced at the IGISOL facility in Jyv\"askyl\"a, Finland, was implanted in a thin carbon foil and the $\beta$ spectrum measured using a magnetic transporter and a plastic-scintillator detector. The $\beta$-decay branching ratio inferred from the measurement is $b_{\beta} = [ 0.41\pm 0.08\textrm{(stat)}\pm 0.07\textrm{(sys)}] \times 10^{-5}$ corresponding to $\log ft = 10.89(11)$, making this one of the strongest second-forbidden, non-unique $\beta$ transitions ever measured. The experimental result is supported by shell-model calculations and has significant implications for the final evolution of stars that develop degenerate oxygen-neon cores. Using the new experimental data, we argue that the astrophysical electron-capture rate on $^{20}$Ne is now known to within better than 25% at the relevant temperatures and densities., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables

The $^{12}\text{C}(\alpha,\gamma){}^{16}\text{O}$ reaction plays a central role in astrophysics, but its cross section at energies relevant for astrophysical applications is only poorly constrained by laboratory data. The reduced $\alpha$ width, $\gamma_{11}$, of the bound $1^-$ level in $^{16}$O is particularly important to determine the cross section. The magnitude of $\gamma_{11}$ is determined via sub-Coulomb $\alpha$-transfer reactions or the $\beta$-delayed $\alpha$ decay of $^{16}$N, but the latter approach is presently hampered by the lack of sufficiently precise data on the $\beta$-decay branching ratios. Here we report improved branching ratios for the bound $1^-$ level [$b_{\beta,11} = (5.02\pm 0.10)\times 10^{-2}$] and for $\beta$-delayed $\alpha$ emission [$b_{\beta\alpha} = (1.59\pm 0.06)\times 10^{-5}$]. Our value for $b_{\beta\alpha}$ is 33% larger than previously held, leading to a substantial increase in $\gamma_{11}$. Our revised value for $\gamma_{11}$ is in good agreement with the value obtained in $\alpha$-transfer studies and the weighted average of the two gives a robust and precise determination of $\gamma_{11}$, which provides significantly improved constraints on the $^{12}$C$(\alpha,\gamma)$ cross section in the energy range relevant to hydrostatic He burning., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Using an array of high-purity Compton-suppressed germanium detectors, we performed an independent measurement of the $\beta$-decay branching ratio from $^{12}\mathrm{B}$ to the second-excited (Hoyle) state in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$. Our result is $0.64(11)\%$, which is a factor $\sim 2$ smaller than the previously established literature value, but is in agreement with another recent measurement. This could indicate that the Hoyle state is more clustered than previously believed. The angular correlation of the Hoyle state $\gamma$ cascade has also been measured for the first time. It is consistent with theoretical predictions.

The production of 26 Al in massive stars is sensitive to the 23 Na(a,p) 26 Mg cross section. Recent experimental data suggest the currently recommended cross sections are underestimated by a factor of 40. We present here differential cross sections for the 23 Na(a,p) 26 Mg reaction measured in the energy range E c.m. = 1.7 - 2.5 MeV. Concurrent measurements of Rutherford scattering provide absolute normalisations which are independent of variations in target properties. Angular distributions were measured for both p 0 and p 1 permitting the determination of total cross sections. The results show no significant deviation from the statistical model calculations upon which the recommended rates are based. We therefore retain the previous recommendation without the increase in cross section and resulting stellar reaction rates of a factor of 40, impacting on the 26 Al yield from massive stars by more than a factor of three.

- Abstract
The 3α decay of the 16.62 MeV (2−, T=1) resonance in $^{12}$C has been studied for nearly a century starting with one of the first nuclear reaction studies at the Cavendish Laboratory in the 1930s. In the hitherto latest study published a decade ago a model based on earlier work from the 1960s was found to give a good account of a set of inclusive data. This model describes the decay as an l=3 α-particle populating the 2+ state of $^{8}$Be. Here we provide new exclusive data on the 3α decay of the 16.62 MeV resonance, and demonstrate that the decay is best described by a model with predominantly l=1 emission with an admixture of l=3.

- Abstract
A complete methodology for detector calibration and energy-loss correction in charged-particle spectroscopy is presented. This has been applied to a compact set-up of four silicon detectors used for beta-delayed particle spectroscopy. The characterisation of the set-up was carried out using GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations and standard alpha-calibration sources. The response function of the system was in this way accurately determined to be used for spectral unfolding.

- Abstract
The main goal of this work is to study the structure of the highest energy states in 8Be populated following the β+-decay and the electron capture (EC) of 8B. With this aim, two experiments were performed at ISOLDE-CERN in 2017 and 2018. The first experiment had the aim to resolve the 2+ doublet at 16.6 and 16.9 MeV, in order to study their isospin mixing. The second experiment aimed to determine a value or give an experimental upper limit to the branching ratio of the exotic EC-p decay. In this paper, we present the experimental setups and we discuss the analysis and present the preliminary results obtained so far.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is common in cancer patients and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD (GARFIELD)-VTE (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02155491) is a prospective, observational study of 10,684 patients with objectively diagnosed VTE from 415 sites in 28 countries. We compared baseline characteristics, VTE treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes (mortality, recurrent VTE and major bleeding) in 1075 patients with active cancer, 674 patients with a history of cancer, and 8935 patients without cancer. Patients with active cancer and history of cancer were older than cancer-free patients, with median ages of 64.8, 68.9, and 58.4 years, respectively. The most common sites of active cancer were lung (14.5%), colorectal (11.0%), breast (10.6%), and gynaecological (10.3%). Active cancer patients had a higher incidence of upper limb and vena cava thrombosis than cancer-free patients (9.0% vs 4.8% and 5.1% vs 1.4%, respectively), and were more likely to receive parenteral anticoagulation as monotherapy than cancer-free patients (57.8% vs 12.1%), and less likely to receive DOACs (14.2% vs 50.6%). Rates of death, recurrent VTE, and major bleeding were higher in active cancer patients than in cancer-free patients, with hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 14.2 (12.1-16.6), 1.6 (1.2-2.0) and 3.8 (2.9-5.0), respectively. VTE was the second most common cause of death in patients with active cancer or history of cancer. In patients with VTE, those with active cancer are at higher risk of death, recurrence, and major bleeding than those without cancer.

The Li7(γ,t)He4 ground state cross section was measured for the first time using monoenergetic γ rays with energies between 4.4 and 10 MeV at the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source. The reaction is important for the primordial Li problem and for testing our understanding of the mirror α-capture reactions H3(α,γ)Li7 and He3(α,γ)Be7. Although over the last 30 years most measurements of the H3(α,γ)Li7 reaction have concentrated in an energy range below Eγ=3.65 MeV, measurements at higher energies could potentially restrict the extrapolation to astrophysically important energies. The experimental arrangement for measuring the Li7(γ,t)He4 reaction included a large-area silicon detector array and several beam characterization instruments. The experimental astrophysical S factor of H3(α,γ) calculated from the present data was fitted using the R-matrix formalism. The results are in disagreement with previous experimental measurements in the same energy range but the extrapolated S factor agrees with the potential model calculation and lower energy experimental data.

- Abstract
The main goal of this work is to study the structure of the highest energy states in 8Be populated following the ß+-decay and the electron capture (EC) of 8B. With this aim, two experiments were performed at ISOLDE-CERN in 2017 and 2018. The first experiment had the aim to resolve the 2+ doublet at 16.6 and 16.9 MeV, in order to study their isospin mixing. The second experiment aimed to determine a value or give an experimental upper limit to the branching ratio of the exotic EC-p decay. In this paper, we present the experimental setups and we discuss the analysis and present the preliminary results obtained so far.

- Abstract
The neutron rich carbon isotope 15C is the only known case of an almost "pure" 2s1/2 single-neutron halo ground state configuration. At collision energies around the Coulomb barrier the reaction dynamics is expected to be dominated by single neutron transfer and breakup. To investigate these effects, we have measured the scattering of 15C with a 208Pb target at 65 MeV at the HIE-ISOLDE facility in CERN (Geneva, Switzerland). The preliminary data demonstrates the presence of a strong long-range absorption pattern in the angular distribution of the elastic cross section. The results are discussed in the framework of Optical Model calculations.

- Abstract
Beta decay is a primary source of information of the structure of a nucleus. An accurate measurement of the half-life of a nucleus is essential for the proper determination of the reduced Gammow-Teller transition probability B(GT). In this work, we present an experiment using a compact set-up of Si-telescope detectors to measure the half-life of the B nucleus. Three independent measurements have been analysed, obtaining the values 771.9(17) ms, 773.9(18) ms, and 770.9(27) ms. The value of the half-life obtained as the weighted averaged with the previous published measures is 771.17(94) ms which is a factor 3.2 of improvement in the uncertainty of the half-life.

- Abstract
The neutron-rich carbon isotope C was postulated to be a halo nucleus (S = 1215 keV, S = 9395 keV) according to different high-energy experiments. If so, it would be the only halo nucleus exhibiting a "pure" s-wave structure of the ground state. At low collision energies, the effect of this halo structure should manifest as a strong absorption pattern in the angular distribution of the elastic cross section, with a total suppression of the nuclear rainbow due to the large neutron transfer and breakup probabilities, enhanced by the halo configuration. The IS619 experiment, carried out at the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN (Switzerland), is the first dynamical study of this nucleus at energies around the Coulomb barrier. It aims to probe the halo structure via the measurement of the elastic cross section on a high-Z Pb target. Preliminary results of the elastic cross section are discussed and compared to Optical Model calculations.

A low-energy, mass-separated F-20(+) beam produced at the IGISOL facility in Jyvaskyla, Finland, was implanted in a thin carbon foil and the beta spectrum measured using a magnetic transporter and a plastic-scintillator detector. The beta-decay branching ratio inferred from the measurement is b(beta) = [0.41 +/- 0.08(stat) +/- 0.07(sys)] x 10(-5) corresponding to log ft = 10.89(11), making this one of the strongest second-forbidden, nonunique beta transitions ever measured. The experimental result is supported by shell-model calculations and has significant implications for the final evolution of stars that develop degenerate oxygen-neon cores. Using the new experimental data, we argue that the astrophysical electron-capture rate on Ne-20 is now known to within better than 25% at the relevant temperatures and densities.
