We present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array radio observations of the long gamma-ray burst GRB 161219B ($z=0.147$) spanning $1-37$ GHz. The data exhibit unusual behavior, including sharp spectral peaks and minutes-timescale large-amplitude variability centered at $20$ GHz and spanning the full frequency range. We attribute this behavior to scattering of the radio emission by the turbulent ionized Galactic interstellar medium (ISM), including both diffractive and refractive scintillation. However, the scintillation is much stronger than predicted by a model of the Galactic electron density distribution (NE2001); from the measured variability timescale and decorrelation bandwidth we infer a scattering measure of $SM\approx {(8-70)\times 10^{-4}}$ kpc m$^{-20/3}$ (up to ${25}$ times larger than predicted in NE2001) and a scattering screen distance of $d_{\rm scr}\approx {0.2-3}$ kpc. We infer an emission region size of $\theta_s \approx {0.9-4}$ $\mu$as ($\approx {(1-4)}\times 10^{16}$ cm) at $\approx4$ days, and find that prior to 8 days the source size is an order of magnitude smaller than model predictions for a uniformly illuminated disk or limb-brightened ring, indicating a slightly off-axis viewing angle or significant substructure in the emission region. Simultaneous multi-hour broadband radio observations of future GRB afterglows will allow us to characterize the scintillation more completely, and hence to probe the observer viewing angle, the evolution of the jet Lorentz factor, the structure of the afterglow emission regions, and ISM turbulence at high Galactic latitudes., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. NGC 3393, a nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy with nuclear radio jets, large-scale and nuclear bars, and a posited secondary super massive black hole, provides an interesting laboratory to test the physics of inflows and outflows. Here we present and analyse the molecular gas (ALMA observations of CO J:2-1 emission over a field of view (FOV) of 45\arcsec \times 45\arcsec, at 0\farcs56 (143 pc) spatial and 5 km/s spectral resolution), ionised gas and stars (GEMINI-GMOS/IFU; over a FOV of 4\arcsec \times 5\arcsec, at 0\farcs62 (159 pc) spatial and 23 km/s spectral resolution) in NGC 3393. The ionised gas emission, detected over the complete GEMINI-GMOS FOV, has three identifiable kinematic components. A narrow (\sigma < 115 km/s) component present in the complete FOV, which is consistent with rotation in the galaxy disk. A broad (\sigma > 115 km/s) redshifted component, detected near the NE and SW radio lobes; which we interpret as a radio jet driven outflow. And a broad (\sigma > 115 km/s) blueshifted component that shows high velocities in a region perpendicular to the radio jet axis; we interpret this as an equatorial outflow. The CO J:2-1 emission is detected in spiral arms on 5\arcsec - 20\arcsec scales, and in two disturbed circumnuclear regions. The molecular kinematics in the spiral arms can be explained by rotation. The highly disturbed kinematics of the inner region can be explained by perturbations induced by the nuclear bar and interactions with the large scale bar. We present a cross-calibration of CO- and dust-based molecular gas masses at $z \leqslant 0.2$. Our results are based on a survey with the IRAM 30-m telescope collecting CO(1-0) measurements of 78 massive ($\log M_{\star} / M_{\odot} > 10$) galaxies with known gas-phase metallicities, and with IR photometric coverage from WISE (22 $\mu$m ) and Herschel SPIRE (250, 350, 500 $\mu$m). We find a tight relation ($\sim 0.17$ dex scatter) between the gas masses inferred from CO and dust continuum emission, with a minor systematic offset of 0.05 dex. The two methods can be brought into agreement by applying a metallicity-dependent adjustment factor ($\sim 0.13$ dex scatter). We illustrate that the observed offset is consistent with a scenario in which dust traces not only molecular gas, but also part of the ${\rm H \small I}$ reservoir, residing in the ${\rm H_2}$-dominated region of the galaxy. Observations of the CO(2-1) to CO(1-0) line ratio for two thirds of the sample indicate a narrow range in excitation properties, with a median ratio of luminosities $ \left\langle R_{21} \right\rangle \sim 0.64 $. Finally, we find dynamical mass constraints from spectral line profile fitting to agree well with the anticipated mass budget enclosed within an effective radius, once all mass components (stars, gas and dark matter) are accounted for., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 31 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables

We discuss the results of the analysis of multi-wavelength data for the afterglows of GRB 081007 and GRB 090424, two bursts detected by Swift. One of them, GRB 081007, also shows a spectroscopically confirmed supernova, SN 2008hw, which resembles SN 1998bw in its absorption features, while the maximum luminosity is only about half as large as that of SN 1998bw. Bright optical flashes have been detected in both events, which allows us to derive solid constraints on the circumburst-matter density profile. This is particularly interesting in the case of GRB 081007, whose afterglow is found to be propagating into a constant-density medium, yielding yet another example of a GRB clearly associated with a massive star progenitor which did not sculpt the surroundings with its stellar wind. There is no supernova component detected in the afterglow of GRB 090424, likely due to the brightness of the host galaxy, comparable to the Milky Way. We show that the afterglow data are consistent with the presence of both forward- and reverse-shock emission powered by relativistic outflows expanding into the interstellar medium. The absence of optical peaks due to the forward shock strongly suggests that the reverse shock regions should be mildly magnetized. The initial Lorentz factor of outflow of GRB 081007 is estimated to be \Gamma ~ 200, while for GRB 090424 a lower limit of \Gamma > 170 is derived. We also discuss the prompt emission of GRB 081007, which consists of just a single pulse. We argue that neither the external forward-shock model nor the shock-breakout model can account for the prompt emission data and suggest that the single-pulse-like prompt emission may be due to magnetic energy dissipation of a Poynting-flux dominated outflow or to a dissipative photosphere., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We have studied the X-ray emission within the inner 150 pc radius of NGC 4151 by constructing high spatial resolution emission line images of OVII, OVIII, and NeIX. These maps show extended structures that are spatially correlated with the radio outflow and optical [OIII] emission. We find strong evidence for jet--gas cloud interaction, including morphological correspondences with regions of X-ray enhancement, peaks of near-infrared [FeII] emission, and optical clouds. In these regions, moreover, we find evidence of elevated NeIX/OVII ratios; the X-ray emission of these regions also exceeds that expected from nuclear photoionization. Spectral fitting reveals the presence of a collisionally ionized component. The thermal energy of the hot gas suggests that >0.1% of the estimated jet power is deposited into the host interstellar medium through interaction between the radio jet and the dense medium of the circum-nuclear region. We find possible pressure equilibrium between the collisionally ionized hot gas and the photoionized line-emitting cool clouds. We also obtain constraints on the extended iron and silicon fluorescent emission. Both lines are spatially unresolved. The upper limit on the contribution of an extended emission region to the Fe Kalpha emission is <5% of the total, in disagreement with a previous claim that 65% of the Fe Kalpha emission originates in the extended narrow line region., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 28 pages, 9 figures

This paper is the third in a series in which we present deep Chandra ACIS-S imaging spectroscopy of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151, devoted to study its complex circum-nuclear X-ray emission. Emission features in the soft X-ray spectrum of the bright extended emission (L[0.3-2keV]~10^40 erg/s) at r>130 pc (2") are consistent with the brighter OVII, OVIII, and NeIX lines seen in the Chandra HETGS and XMM-Newton RGS spectra below 2 keV. We construct emission line images of these features and find good morphological correlations with the narrow line region clouds mapped in [OIII]5007A. Self-consistent photoionization models provide good descriptions of the spectra of the large scale emission, as well as resolved structures, supporting the dominant role of nuclear photoionization, although displacement of optical and X-ray features implies a more complex medium. Collisionally ionized emission is estimated to be <12% of the extended emission. Presence of both low and high ionization spectral components and extended emission in the X-ray image perpendicular to the bicone indicates leakage of nuclear ionization, likely filtered through warm absorbers, instead of being blocked by a continuous obscuring torus. The ratios of [OIII]/soft X-ray flux are approximately constant (~15) for the 1.5 kpc radius spanned by these measurements, indicating a relatively constant ionization parameter, consistent with the photoionized outflow of a wind-like density profile. Using spatially resolved features, we estimate that the mass outflow rate in NGC 4151 is ~2Msun/yr at 130 pc and the kinematic power of the ionized outflow is 1.7x10^41 erg/s, approximately 0.3% of the bolometric luminosity of NGC 4151., Comment: 45 pages. 18 figures. We report on the imaging analysis of 200 ks sub-arcsecond resolution Chandra ACIS-S observations of the nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151. Bright, structured soft X-ray emission is observed to extend from 30 pc to 1.3 kpc in the south-west from the nucleus, much farther than seen in earlier X-ray studies. The terminus of the north-eastern X-ray emission is spatially coincident with a CO gas lane, where the outflow likely encounters dense gas in the host galactic disk. X-ray emission is also detected outside the boundaries of the ionization cone, which indicates that the gas there is not completely shielded from the nuclear continuum, as would be the case for a molecular torus collimating the bicone. In the central r<200 pc region, the subpixel processing of the ACIS data recovers the morphological details on scales of <30~pc (<0.5") first discovered in Chandra HRC images. The X-ray emission is more absorbed towards the boundaries of the ionization cone, as well as perpendicular to the bicone along the direction of a putative torus in NGC 4151. The innermost region where X-ray emission shows the highest hardness ratio, is spatially coincident with the near-infrared resolved H_2 emission and dusty spirals we find in an HST V-H color image. The agreement between the observed H_2 line flux and the value predicted from X-ray-irradiated molecular cloud models supports photo-excitation by X-rays from the active nucleus as the origin of the H_2 line, although contribution from UV fluorescence or collisional excitation cannot be fully ruled out with current data. The discrepancy between the mass of cold molecular gas inferred from recent CO and near-infrared H_2 observations may be explained by the anomalous CO abundance in this X-ray dominated region. We present the Chandra discovery of soft diffuse X-ray emission in NGC 4151 (L[0.5-2keV]~10^{39} erg s$^{-1}$), extending ~2 kpc from the active nucleus and filling in the cavity of the HI material. The best fit to the X-ray spectrum requires either a kT~0.25 keV thermal plasma or a photoionized component. In the thermal scenario, hot gas heated by the nuclear outflow would be confined by the thermal pressure of the HI gas and the dynamic pressure of inflowing neutral material in the galactic disk. In the case of photoionization, the nucleus must have experienced an Eddington limit outburst. For both scenarios, the AGN-host interaction in NGC 4151 must have occured relatively recently (some 10^4 yr ago). This very short timescale to the last episode of high activity phase may imply such outbursts occupy $\gtrsim$1% of AGN lifetime., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJ Letters

Despite the pre-Swift expectation that bright optical flashes from reverse shocks would be prevalent in early-time afterglow emission, rapid response observations show this not to be the case. Although very bright at early times, some GRBs such as GRB 061007 and GRB 060418, lack the short-lived optical flash from the reverse shock within minutes after the GRB. In contrast, other optical afterglows, such as those of GRB 990123, GRB 021211, GRB 060111B, GRB 060117, GRB 061126, and recently GRB 080319B, show a steep-to-flat transition within first 10^3 s typical of a rapidly evolving reverse + forward shock combination. We review the presence and absence of the reverse shock components in optical afterglows and discuss the implications for the standard model and the magnetization of the fireball. We show that the previously predicted optical flashes are likely to occur at lower wavelengths, perhaps as low as radio wavelengths and, by using the case of GRB 061126 we show that the magnetic energy density in the ejecta, expressed as a fraction of the equipartion value, is a key physical parameter., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. To examine the role of the host galaxy structure in fueling nuclear activity, we estimated gas flow rates from several kpc down to the inner few 10 pc for seven nearby spiral galaxies, selected from the NUGA sample (NUclei of GAlaxies). We calculated gravitational torques from near-IR images and determined gas in/out-flow rates as a function of radius and location within the galactic disks, based on high angular resolution interferometric observations of molecular (CO using PdBI) and atomic (HI using the VLA) gas. The results are compared with kinematic evidence for radial gas flows and the dynamical state of the galaxies (via resonances) derived from several different methods. We show that gravitational torques are very efficient at transporting gas from the outer disk all the way into the galaxies centers at ~100 pc; previously assumed dynamical barriers to gas transport, such as the Corotation Resonance of stellar bars, seem to be overcome by gravitational torque induced gas flows from other non-axisymmmetric structures. The resulting rates of gas mass inflow range from 0.01 to 50 solar masses per year and are larger for the galaxy center than for the outer disk. Our gas flow maps show the action of nested bars within larger bars for 3 galaxies. Non-circular streaming motions found in the kinematic maps are larger in the center than in the outer disk and appear to correlate only loosely with the in/out-flow rates as a function of radius. We demonstrate that spiral gas disks are very dynamic systems that undergo strong radial evolution on timescales of a few rotation periods (e.g. 5 times 10^8 yrs at a radius of 5 kpc), due to the effectiveness of gravitational torques in redistributing the cold galactic gas., Comment: 83 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ. We report the optical polarization of a gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglow, obtained 203 seconds after the initial burst of gamma rays from GRB 060418, using a ring polarimeter on the robotic Liverpool Telescope. Our robust (2-sigma) upper limit on the percentage of polarization, less than 8%, coincides with the fireball deceleration time at the onset of the afterglow. The combination of the rate of decay of the optical brightness and the low polarization at this critical time constrains standard models of GRB ejecta, ruling out the presence of a large-scale ordered magnetic field in the emitting region., Comment: 8 pages including 1 figure. We present Sauron 2D spectrography of the central 1.5 kpc of the nearby Sey2 galaxy NGC1068, encompassing the well-known NIR inner bar. We have successively disentangled the respective contributions of the ionized gas and stars, thus deriving their 2D distribution and kinematics. The [OIII] and Hbeta emission lines exhibit very different spatial distribution and kinematics, the latter following inner spiral arms with clumps associated with star formation. Strong inwards streaming motions are observed in both the Hbeta and [OIII] kinematics. The stellar kinematics also exhibit clear signatures of a non-axisymmetric tumbling potential, with a twist in both the velocity and h3 fields. We re-examined the long-slit data of Shapiro et al (2003) using pPXF: a strong decoupling of h3 is revealed, and the central decrease in h4 hinted in the Sauron data is confirmed. These data also suggest that NGC1068 is a good candidate for a so-called sigma-drop. We confirm the possible presence of two pattern speeds. We also examine the stellar kinematics of bars formed in N-body+SPH simulations built from axisymmetric initial conditions. These successfully reproduce a number of properties observed in the 2D kinematics of NGC1068, and the long-slit data, showing that the kinematic signature of the NIR bar is imprinted in the stellar kinematics. The remaining differences between the models and the observed properties are mostly due to the exclusion of star formation and the lack of the primary large-scale oval/bar in the simulations. These models suggest that the inner bar could drive a significant amount of gas down to a scale of ~300 pc. The Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 has been imaged at resolution better than 0.1 pc using a VLBI array consisting of the VLBA and three 100m-class telescopes. A flat-spectrum 3-mJy source with a monochromatic radio power of ~10^{37} ergs/s has been detected, apparently at the location of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and its central black hole. The radio source has a minimum brightness temperature of 2.1 x 10^8 K and a size upper limit of 0.035 pc, about 10 times the diameter of the broad-line region and 15,000 times the diameter of the black hole's event horizon. An additional flat-spectrum component located within a parsec of the apparent nucleus is likely to be a knot in the inner radio jet. The presence of some steep-spectrum radio emission within 0.1 pc of the galaxy nucleus limits the emission measure of a possible ionized torus to a maximum value of 10^8 cm^{-6}pc. If the hard X-ray source in NGC 4151 is associated with the radio AGN, its radio to X-ray ratio is less than 10^{-5}, putting NGC 4151 securely in the radio-quiet class of AGNs. The radio image reveals a 0.2 pc two-sided base to the well-known arcsecond radio jet. Apparent speeds of jet components relative to the radio AGN are <0.050c and <0.028c at respective nuclear distances of 0.16 pc and 6.8 pc. These are the lowest speed limits yet found for a Seyfert galaxy, and indicate non-relativistic jet motions, possibly due to thermal plasma, on a scale only an order of magnitude larger than the broad-line region., Comment: Accepted to Astronomical Journal, 23 pages, 5 figures, 1 color figure

We report the discovery of active star formation in the HI cloud associated with the interacting Seyfert system NGC 3227/NGC 3226 that was originally identified as a candidate tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) by Mundell et al. and that we name J1023+1952. We present the results of broad-band BRIJHK and ultraviolet imaging that show the HI cloud is associated with massive on-going star formation seen as a cluster of blue knots (M_B < -15.5 mag) surrounded by a diffuse ultraviolet halo and co-spatial with a ridge of high column density neutral hydrogen its southern half. We also detect Ha emission from the knots with a flux density corresponding to a star-formation rate of SFR~0.011 Msun per yr. Although J1023+1952 spatially overlaps the edge of the disk of NGC 3227, it has a mean HI velocity 150 km/s higher than that of NGC 3227 so is kinematically distinct; comparison of ionized and neutral gas kinematics in the star-forming region show closely matched velocities, providing strong evidence that the knots are embedded in J1023+1952 and do not merely lie behind in the disk of NGC 3227, thus confirming J1023+1952 as a gas-rich dwarf galaxy. We discuss two scenarios for the origin of J1023+1952; as a third, pre-existing dwarf galaxy involved in the interaction with NGC 3227 and NGC 3226, or a newly-forming dwarf galaxy condensing out of the tidal debris removed from the gaseous disk of NGC 3227. Given the lack of a detectable old stellar population, a tidal origin is more likely. If J1023+1952 is a bound object forming from returning gaseous tidal tail material, we infer a dynamically young age similar to its star-formation age, and suggests it is in the earliest stages of TDG evolution. Whatever the origin of J1023+1952 we suggest that its star formation is shock-triggered by collapsing tidal debris.
