Abstract Background Despite an empathic doctor patient relationship being of utmost importance to improve health care outcomes, this aspect is scarcely explored in dental students of Pakistan. This primary objective of the present study was to assess the reliability and validity of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy- Health Professions Student (JSE- HPS) version in a sample of Pakistani dental students. The study also compared the differences in empathy levels of dental students studying in different academic years. Methods This comparative cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 304 students from first to final year from selected 02 private and 02 public dental colleges of Karachi, Pakistan from December 2021- January 2022. The self-administered Jefferson Scale of Empathy- Health Professions Student (JSE-HPS) version was used for data collection. This questionnaire includes 20 items that can be answered on a 7-point Likert scale. After attendance sheets were obtained, random student names were marked, and questionnaire distributed by hand to these students. All forms were collected right after to maximize response rate. Results A total of 304 forms with complete data were returned, a response rate of 86.9%. Females (97.79 ± 15 94) were more empathetic than males (94.16 ± 12.13) (p = 0.001). Students of third-year were the most empathetic (p = 0.000). Internal consistency of questionnaire was acceptable (Cronbach’s α- 0.77). Factor analysis revealed factor related to belief that patient’s perspectives improve health outcome had 14 items with factor coefficient > 0.4 contributing to largest proportion of variance (23.15%). Conclusions Our study shows JSE- HPS to have acceptable internal consistency. Structural validity of the scale evaluated by confirmatory factor analysis reported results that were in concordance to those suggested by developers of this scale. In our study population, like other studies, females were more empathic than males. Third-year dental students were more empathetic than students of other undergraduate years.

Abstract Percutaneous image-guided ablation techniques are a consolidated therapeutic alternative for patients with high preoperative surgical risk for the management of oncological diseases in multiple body districts. Each technique has both pros and cons according to the type of energy delivered, mechanism of action, and site of application. The present article reviews the most recent literature results on ablation techniques applied in the field of genitourinary diseases (kidney, adrenal glands, prostate, and uterus), describing the advantages of the use of each technique and their technical limitations and summarizing the major recommendations from an international consensus meeting. Critical relevant statement The article critically evaluates the efficacy and safety of ablation therapies for various genitourinary tract diseases, demonstrating their potential to improve patient outcomes and advance clinical radiology by offering minimally invasive, effective alternatives to traditional surgical treatments. Key Points Ablation therapies are effective alternatives to surgery for renal cell carcinoma. Ablation techniques offer effective treatment for intermediate-risk prostate cancer. High voltage (HV) outdoor insulators are subjected to both electrical and environmental stresses, which may lead to their failure. Among the causes, corona discharge, humidity and UV radiation are considered to be the most damaging factors. Efforts are therefore underway to investigate new materials for improving the performance of insulating systems. In this research work, silicone-based room temperature vulcanized samples filled with alumina trihydrate (ATH), silicon dioxide and magnesium hydroxide (MH) were prepared and exposed to AC corona discharge for a duration of 110 h. The electric discharge was also accompanied by UV radiation and two different humidity levels. Following aging of the test samples, diagnosis was conducted to assess their integrity. Measurements based on determining the static contact angle demonstrated the loss of hydrophobicity of all the materials, while hydrophobicity recovery phenomena revealed that ATH-doped materials demonstrated a comparatively higher increase in the contact angle than in samples filled with silicone dioxide (silica) and MH. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed deep cracks and block-like structures on their surfaces. Similarly, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis indicated the signs of surface oxidation of the aged samples. However, the data of elemental composition exhibited the loss of filler contents as well as that of carbon from the base matrix. The overall assessment showed that resistance to suppress aging is influenced by both the filler type and its concentration in the investigated composites. The ATH-filled composites exhibited outstanding performance when exposed to the rigors of corona discharge and other environmental stresses. This research contributes to materials science and HV engineering by addressing the development of composites for enhanced insulator performance, with future aspects lying in the utilization of nano-composites for advanced functionality and durability.

Abstract Brittle shear failure of beam-column joints, especially during seismic events poses a significant threat to structural integrity. This study investigates the potential of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) in the joint core to enhance ductility and overcome construction challenges associated with traditional reinforcement. A non-linear finite element analysis (NLFEA) using ABAQUS software was conducted to simulate the behavior of SFRC beam-column joints subjected to cyclic loading. Ten simulated specimens were analyzed to discern the impact of varying steel fiber volume fraction and aspect ratio on joint performance. Key findings reveal that a 2% volume fraction of steel fibers in the joint core significantly improves post-cracking behavior by promoting ductile shear failure, thereby increasing joint toughness. While aspect ratio variations showed minimal impact on load capacity, long and thin steel fibers effectively bridge cracks, delaying their propagation. Furthermore, increasing steel fiber content resulted in higher peak-to-peak stiffness. This research suggests that strategically incorporating SFRC in the joint core can promote ductile shear failure, enhance joint toughness, and reduce construction complexities by eliminating the need for congested hoops. Overall, the developed NLFEA model proves to be a valuable tool for investigating design parameters in SFRC beam-column joints under cyclic loading.

Handwritten Character recognition falls under the domain of image classification that has been under research for years. The idea is to make the machine recognize handwritten human characters. The language focused in this research paper is English while using offline handwritten character recognition for identifying English characters. There are many publically available datasets from which EMNIST is the most challenging one. The main idea of this research paper is to propose a deep learning CNN method to help recognize English characters. This research paper proposes a deep learning convolutional neural network that is tested and compared with renowned pre-trained models using transfer learning. These parametric settings address multiple issues and are finalized after experimentation. The same hyper-parametric settings were used for all the models under test and E-Character with the same data augmentation settings. The proposed model named the E-Character recognizer was able to produce 87.31% accuracy. It was better than most of the tested pre-trained models and other proposed methods by other researchers. This research paper further highlighted some of the problems like misclassification due to the similar structure of characters.

The demolishing waste generated due to demolishing of the structures has proved difficult to handle due to scarcity of the dumping space particularly in urban areas. Its use in new concrete solves the problem to some extent but developed products differ in properties both at fresh and hardened states. To overcome the deficiency nylon fibers are proposed in this work. The compressive and tensile strength of the proposed concrete at a hardened state and workability as fresh properties of concrete are studied. Conventional and recycled aggregates were used in equal proportions. Nylon fibers of 1 mm diameter and 25 mm length were used from 0.25% to 2% with a 0.25% increment in each successive batch were used. Using 1:2:4 mix with water cement ratio equal to 0.5, a total of 10 mixes were designed. The workability of each mix was evaluated by the slump cone test. Water curing for 28 days was used for five samples in each batch. Compressive and tensile strength were computed from the crushing load determined in the universal testing machine. Comparison of the results with those of control concrete revealed that 1.5% of nylon fibers along with 50% recycled aggregates produce maximum compressive strength of 930.16 (MPa) with 24% more than conventional concrete (24.16 MPa) and 56% more than recycled aggregate concrete (19.27 MPa) without nylon fibers. The tensile strength of the proposed concrete (3.66 MPa) was noticed 22% and 55% higher than the conventional concrete (3.0 MPa) and recycled aggregate concrete (2.36 MPa) at optimum dosage. Hence the impact of optimized doze of the nylon fiber shows improved strength properties of the concrete.

The Palaeocene Lockhart Formation, a carbonate-rich succession abundant in Larger Benthic Foraminifera, represents a significant potential hydrocarbon reservoir extending throughout the Kohat, Potwar and Hazara basins of Pakistan. This study examines two stratigraphic sections of the Lockhart Formation in the Hazara Basin—Bagran and Karhaki—providing crucial insights into its biostratigraphy and microfacies analysis. The formation comprises medium- to fine-grained limestone with shale intercalations, exhibiting argillaceous to compacted textures. Biostratigraphic analysis revealed a diverse assemblage of Larger Benthic Foraminifera, with 23 species identified across 9 genera, including Miscellanea miscella, Lockhartia haimei, Lockhartia conditi and Ranikothalia sindensis. These fossils indicate deposition within Shallow Benthic Zone (SBZ) 4 during the Late Thanetian, suggesting a dynamic palaeoenvironment. Seven distinct microfacies types were identified: bioclastic mudstone, mixed bioclastic wackestone, miliolidal bioclastic wackestone, foraminiferal wackestone–packstone, foraminiferal wackestone, foraminiferal packstone and bioclastic foraminiferal packstone. These microfacies indicate varied depositional settings, from shallow subtidal and lagoonal to shallow restricted and open marine environments, spanning inner ramp to distal mid-ramp conditions. This research advances our understanding of Late Thanetian depositional environments within the Lockhart Limestone, with implications for regional sedimentology, palaeogeographic reconstruction and reservoir characterisation.

The objective of the study is to determine the electricity use, and tourism industry environmental impacts, and increase in CO2 emissions in Pakistan. What are the linkages of foreign direct investment, intercountryal trade, gross domestict product, and CO2 emissions. The study has applied the Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) method to analysis the data set from 1985 to 2023. The robustness test is applied using Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (DOLS), and Fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS). The results reveal that the increase in the electricity use, and tourism industry has significant negative impacts on CO2 emissions in both short- and long-run. The increase in intercountry trade effects the Domestic Product growth (GDP) growth and causes to increase in use of fossil fuels, which are the major source of CO2 emissions. The increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) increase the GDP growth, and FDI also increase the CO2 emissions in Pakistan. The results suggests that the incresae in the renewal energy consumption for the electricity production and transportation can help to decrease the CO2 emissions in Pakistan.

One-inflation in zero-truncated count data has recently found considerable attention. In this regard, zero-truncated Geometric distribution and distribution to a point mass at one are used to create a one-inflated model, namely, one-inflated zero-truncated Geometric distribution. Its reliability characteristics, generating functions, and distributional properties are investigated in detail, which includes survival function, hazard rate function, reverse hazard rate function, probability generating function, characteristic function, variance, skewness, and kurtosis. Monte Carlo simulation have been undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of the maximum likelihood estimators. To test the compatibility of our proposed model, the baseline model and the proposed model are distinguished by using the two different test procedures. The adaptability of the suggested model is demonstrated using two real-life datasets from separate domains by taking various performance measures into consideration.

Abstract The flashover strength of epoxy (EP) insulations in the High voltage direct current applications of future energy grids can be improved by tailoring their surface condition. This work aims to improve the DC surface flashover characteristics of EP after being treated with sandpaper of different gradings. Samples with virgin EP and homogenously modified EP considering varying surface roughness (Ra = 0.54, 3.16, 5.24, and 8.35 μm) are prepared. Different experimental characterisations, such as water contact angle, surface intrinsic conductivity, surface voltages, flashover strength, and trap distributions are conducted and evaluated to analyse the difference between virgin and treated EP. Moreover, based on the obtained experimental results of homogenously treated EP and theoretical analysis, the concept of surface functionally graded materials (SFGMs) is put forward. The flashover voltages of homogenously treated EP are augmented significantly compared to virgin EP regardless of the voltage polarity and enhanced by enhancing the surface roughness. The sample TModel‐C with SFGM design shows a 45.02% and 43.75% improvement in the negative and positive flashover voltages than that of the virgin EP. In the end, COMSOL simulations are conducted to justify the experimental findings and to analyse the difference between virgin and modified samples in terms of electric field distribution.

This study investigates the development of a cost-effective and sustainable dry-shake surface hardener for enhancing the durability of industrial concrete floors. Utilizing locally sourced materials, the research aimed at not only ensuring the hardener's strength and finish but also its economic viability and environmental friendliness. Fourteen unique mixtures were formulated by altering the sand ratios and incorporating superplasticizers to optimize the composition. These mixtures underwent rigorous testing over 7, 14, and 28 days, evaluating their compressive and flexural strengths, flowability, water absorption, and impact resistance. The findings revealed that the modified floor hardener, specifically the FH-12 mixture, exhibited superior performance across all tested parameters. It showed higher compressive and flexural strengths, enhanced impact resistance, and reduced water absorption compared to other variants and commercially available hardeners. Notably, the use of finer coarse sand and the adjustment of superplasticizer quantities significantly contributed to these outcomes. This breakthrough demonstrates the potential of employing locally available materials to create a durable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solution for industrial flooring. The study underscores the importance of material characterization and methodical formulation in developing construction materials that meet the dual criteria of performance and sustainability. This option is preferred for its lower environmental impact and compatibility with sustainable practices, contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure. It highlights the role of floor hardeners in global sustainability efforts.

Abstract Image-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is used to treat focal tumors in the liver and other organs. Despite potential advantages over surgery, hepatic RFA can promote local and distant tumor growth by activating pro-tumorigenic growth factor and cytokines. Thus, strategies to identify and suppress pro-oncogenic effects of RFA are urgently required to further improve the therapeutic effect. Here, the proliferative effect of plasma of Hepatocellular carcinoma or colorectal carcinoma patients 90 min post-RFA was tested on HCC cell lines, demonstrating significant cellular proliferation compared to baseline plasma. Multiplex ELISA screening demonstrated increased plasma pro-tumorigenic growth factors and cytokines including the FGF protein family which uniquely and selectively activated HepG2. Primary mouse and immortalized human hepatocytes were then subjected to moderate hyperthermia in-vitro, mimicking thermal stress induced during ablation in the peri-ablational normal tissue. Resultant culture medium induced proliferation of multiple cancer cell lines. Subsequent non-biased protein array revealed that these hepatocytes subjected to moderate hyperthermia also excrete a similar wide spectrum of growth factors. Recombinant FGF-2 activated multiple cell lines. FGFR inhibitor significantly reduced liver tumor load post-RFA in MDR2-KO inflammation-induced HCC mouse model. Thus, Liver RFA can induce tumorigenesis via the FGF signaling pathway, and its inhibition suppresses HCC development.

In this article, wavelet Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based non-orthogonal-multiple-access (NOMA) combined with massive MIMO system for 6G network is proposed. For mMIMO transmissions, the suggested system could enhance the performance by utilizing wavelets and is able to compensate channel impairments for the transmitted signal. Performance measures include spectral efficiency (SE), symbol error rate (SER), and peak to average power ratio (PAPR). Simulation results prove that the proposed system outperforms the conventional fast Fourier transform (FFT) based NOMA systems.

Soil pollution due to heavy metal (HM) contamination has emerged as a global issue worldwide owing to their adverse impacts on plant growth. Bioremediation approaches employing living organisms for HM alleviation have gained considerable attention among scientific community. Biological agents such as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) offer a sustainable way to restore soil health, and their combination with different organic amendments such as press mud (PM) can serve as potential approach for immobilizing HMs in soil. We performed a pot experiment to evaluate the role of individual and combined application of press mud and PGPR strain ‘FQ6’ (identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens) in the phytoremediation of different HMs (Pb, Ni and Cd) and growth promotion of aloe vera. Combined application of FQ6 strain and PM yielded more significant outcomes in terms of all the growth and yield attributes such as leaf length (123 %), plant height (57 %), number of leaves (115 %), fresh and dry weights of gel (246 and 280 %), gel contents (96 %), root length (164 %), root diameter (220 %), no. of root tips (138 %) and root area (315 %), as compared to control. Combined application of FQ6 and PM also led to a significant improvement in different antioxidant activities i.e., CAT (129 %), SOD (48 %), APX (17 %) and POD (83 %) as compared to control. Contrastingly, mobility of these HMs was reduced under combined application of Pseudomonas strain ‘FQ6’ and PM, as there existed a considerable difference between HMs concentrations in soil and plant body. We concluded that joint application of HM-tolerant Pseudomonas FQ6 strain and PM could be an ideal option to alleviate the HM induced adverse impacts on aloe vera by immobilizing them in soil, and subsequently, improving plant growth.

The study draws attention to the associations between monetary and economic elements and their potential environmental impacts. The study uses time series data from 1960 to 2022 to examine the connection between CO2 emissions, industrial growth, GNE, and inflation in China. The researchers utilized the well-known econometric technique of nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) to examine nonlinear correlations between these variables. The results reveal that GDP, inflation, and economic development influence long-term CO2 emissions. The strong positive correlation between gross national expenditures and economic activity increases CO2 emissions. In the short run, CO2 emissions are positively and statistically significantly affected by inflation. While inflation temporarily affects CO2 emissions, this effect dissipates with time. Industrial activity increases CO2 emissions, and China's fast industrialization has damaged the environment. The energy-intensive fertiliser manufacturing process and fossil fuels increase CO2 emissions. The research shows how government officials and academics may collaborate to create tailored measures to alleviate the environmental impacts of economic activity.

Cost overruns are a global challenge to successfully completing construction projects. Cost overrun has a substantial impact resulting in most construction projects failing to be completed. Several factors have contributed significantly to the industry's decline. The factors were discovered in the literature, assessed, and applied to the construction industry in Pakistan. This study scrutinized and identified the relationships between the factors causing cost overruns in the Pakistani construction industry using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) approach. The structural model was created and tested with Smart-PLS software using data from a questionnaire survey of 131 construction practitioners. Six constructs were used to categorise the factors. The model identifies 21 critical factors in Pakistani construction projects, with resource management ranking first. Contract management issues can also contribute significantly to project cost overruns. Model assessment results indicate that the developed model has a substantial power of explaining the factors of cost performance while R2 value showed that 45.7% variance is explained by the model. The model developed model will serve as a jumping-off point for academics, researchers, and practitioners in developing a cost-control system. It is suggested that establishing an efficient and effective contract management protocol among stakeholders throughout the design and supervision stages is extremely beneficial for improving project cost performance and significantly reducing time overruns.

Background & Aims: Metabolic reprogramming, in particular, glycolytic regulation, supports abnormal survival and growth of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and could serve as a therapeutic target. In this study, we sought to identify glycolytic regulators in HCC that could be inhibited to prevent tumor progression and could also be monitored in vivo, with the goal of providing a theragnostic alternative to existing therapies. Methods: An orthotopic HCC rat model was used. Tumors were stimulated into a high-proliferation state by use of off-target liver ablation and were compared with lower-proliferating controls. We measured in vivo metabolic alteration in tumors before and after stimulation, and between stimulated tumors and control tumors using hyperpolarized 13C magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (h13C MRI). We compared metabolic alterations detected by h13C MRI to metabolite levels from ex vivo mass spectrometry, mRNA levels of key glycolytic regulators, and histopathology. Results: Glycolytic lactate flux increased within HCC tumors 3 days after tumor stimulation, correlating positively with tumor proliferation as measured with Ki67. This was associated with a shift towards aerobic glycolysis and downregulation of the pentose phosphate pathway detected by mass spectrometry. MRI-measured lactate flux was most closely coupled with PFKFB3 expression and was suppressed with direct inhibition using PFK15. Conclusions: Inhibition of PFKFB3 prevents glycolytic-mediated HCC proliferation, trackable by in vivo h13C MRI.

Central insulin resistance, the diminished cellular sensitivity to insulin in the brain, has been implicated in diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disorders. However, whether and how central insulin resistance plays a role in the eye remains unclear. Here, we performed intracerebroventricular injection of S961, a potent and specific blocker of insulin receptor in adult Wistar rats to test if central insulin resistance leads to pathological changes in ocular structures. 80 mg of S961 was stereotaxically injected into the lateral ventricle of the experimental group twice at 7 days apart, whereas buffer solution was injected to the sham control group. Blood samples, intraocular pressure, trabecular meshwork morphology, ciliary body markers, retinal and optic nerve integrity, and whole genome expression patterns were then evaluated. While neither blood glucose nor serum insulin level was significantly altered in the experimental or control group, we found that injection of S961 but not buffer solution significantly increased intraocular pressure at 14 and 24 days after first injection, along with reduced porosity and aquaporin 4 expression in the trabecular meshwork, and increased tumor necrosis factor α and aquaporin 4 expression in the ciliary body. In the retina, cell density and insulin receptor expression decreased in the retinal ganglion cell layer upon S961 injection. Fundus photography revealed peripapillary atrophy with vascular dysregulation in the experimental group. These retinal changes were accompanied by upregulation of pro-inflammatory and pro-apoptotic genes, downregulation of anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and neurotrophic genes, as well as dysregulation of genes involved in insulin signaling. Optic nerve histology indicated microglial activation and changes in the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein, tumor necrosis factor α, and aquaporin 4. Molecular pathway architecture of the retina revealed the three most significant pathways involved being inflammation/cell stress, insulin signaling, and extracellular matrix regulation relevant to neurodegeneration. There was also a multimodal crosstalk between insulin signaling derangement and inflammation-related genes. Taken together, our results indicate that blocking insulin receptor signaling in the central nervous system can lead to trabecular meshwork and ciliary body dysfunction, intraocular pressure elevation, as well as inflammation, glial activation, and apoptosis in the retina and optic nerve. Given that central insulin resistance may lead to neurodegenerative phenotype in the visual system, targeting insulin signaling may hold promise for vision disorders involving the retina and optic nerve.

Malware instances have been extremely used for illegitimate purposes, and new variants of malware are observed every day. Machine learning in network security is one of the prime areas of research today because of its performance and has shown tremendous growth in the last decade. In this paper, we formulate the malware signature as a 2D image representation and leverage deep learning approaches to characterize the signature of malware contained in BIG15 dataset across nine classes. The current research compares the performance of various machine learning and deep learning technologies towards malware classification such as Logistic Regression (LR), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), transfer learning on CNN and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM). The transfer learning approach using InceptionV3 resulted in a good performance with respect to the compared models like LSTM with a classification accuracy of 98.76% on the test dataset and 99.6% on the train dataset.

AbstractMost of the drugs are hydrophobic and have low water solubility, therefore posing issues in their absorption and bioavailability. Nonionic surfactants improve the solubility of hydrophobic drugs by entrapping them in their lipid bilayers. Two nonionic surfactants NODNH-16 and NODNH-18 are synthesized and characterized using different techniques i.e. EI-MS, 1H NMR, and FTIR. These newly synthesized surfactants were screened for blood hemolysis assay and cell toxicity studies using the NIH/3T3 cell line to assess their biocompatibility. Then amphotericin B was loaded into niosomal vesicles, and the drug entrapment efficiency of these surfactants was measured using UV–visible spectroscopy. The morphology of drug-loaded niosomes of synthesized surfactants was investigated using AFM, and their size, polydispersity, and zeta potential were measured with the Zetasizer instrument. Finally, a simulation study was performed to determine the pattern of self-assembly of the synthesized amphiphiles. Both synthesized nonionic surfactants showed good entrapment efficiency of 60.65 ± 2.12% and 68.45 ± 2.12%, respectively. It was also confirmed that both these synthesized nonionic surfactants were safe and biocompatible and showed less blood hemolysis (i.e. 21.13 ± 2.11% and 23.32 ± 2.45%) and higher 3T3 cells’ viability at 150 µg/mL concentration as compared to Tween®-80. The antifungal potential of amphotericin B-loaded niosomes has been evaluated against unicellular multi-fungal species, which showed a promising potential for fungicidal activity. These results are substantiated by constructing a safe vehicle system for drug delivery.

Many cultivars of annual ornamental horticulture have great phenotypic qualities but are less tolerant to the effects of current climate change and urbanization. A good example of this in Hungarian ornamental breeding is the Rudbeckia hirta cultivar “Őszifény”. The objective of this study was to determine whether gamma mutation breeding (using 5 Gy, 10 Gy, 30 Gy doses) can be employed to enhance genetic variability and create mutants with novel trait values. Furthermore, it is important to ascertain whether the altered genetic traits are proportionate to the observed changes in phenotype. As an original and innovative aspect of the research, this will assist in establishing appropriate dose rates for the species. Changes induced by gamma radiation have been mapped using morphological, histological, and genetic methods. The radiation dose of 5 Gy resulted in plants with the most favorable characteristics, including significant increases in branching and flower number. Additionally, the phenomenon of hormesis was observed. Beyond these, the dose of 30 Gy also had a significant effect because it resulted in plants with many flowers and bushy habits, making them suitable for use as ornamental potted plants. The 10 Gy dose resulted in a heterogeneous stand but showed the greatest genetic variation. These results may contribute to future breeding work and may pave the way for further urban application of R. hirta in the light of urbanization.

OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to explore current trends in undergraduate fixed prosthodontics teaching at undergraduate dental level education. METHODS This cross-sectional descriptive study included close-ended questions to inquire about the teaching practices of fixed prosthodontics at Bachelor of Dental Surgery level education. Electronic copies of the survey forms were sent to the heads or directors of department of prosthodontics responsible for undergraduate dental students teaching and learning in various institutes of Sindh by the help of Google forms in December 2020. The form included questions on sociodemographic details and questions inquiring the theoretical and clinical teaching practices in undergraduate fixed prosthodontics course. Data was entered and analyzed using SPSS 25. Frequency distribution and percentages of categorical variables were recorded. RESULTS Out of total 18 dental institutes of Sindh, 15 returned the completely filled form, giving a response rate of 83.3%. Seven (46.7%) schools teach various fixed prosthesis in the preclinical years to their students. All 15 colleges carry out didactic teaching and provide exposure by live clinical demonstrations for various fixed prosthesis. Faculty of 12 (80%) dental colleges where fixed prostheses are being constructed in the dental outpatient department mentioned that their students observe or assist the clinical procedures during their clinical rotation; but none of the students fabricate any type of fixed prosthesis in the clinical setting during their undergraduate years. CONCLUSION Didactic teaching and live clinical demonstrations of fixed prosthodontics is being carried out in all dental colleges of Sindh. Almost half of the dental schools teach crown preparation on phantom teeth during their preclinical course. Contrary to this, none of the students fabricate any type of fixed prosthesis in the clinical setting during their undergraduate years. As these procedures are not included in the current undergraduate curriculum, recommendations should be forwarded to governing educational body of the country to include cases of fixed prosthesis in their skill set prior to their graduation.

Pakistan has an agro-based economy with a high dependency on the sector, contributing 19.2% to the country’s GDP. The country's geographical position makes agriculture highly vulnerable to climate change as it frequently faces periods of extreme weather events - flooding, droughts, and heatwaves. Due to growing environmental issues and institutional incapacities, there is an observed trend of urbanisation and depleting natural resources. Changes in land use and water scarcity cause reduced productivity and compromised economic growth. The country needs to adopt Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) as an adaptation measure against climate change. CSA is an approach to adopting agricultural systems strategies to minimise climate impacts and preserve natural resources. This study explores the intervention that enhanced the capabilities of provincial agriculture service-delivery organisations in the adoption of CSA. It produced a country-specific CSA resource kit and delivered training for agriculture extension officers and frontline government officers in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. The Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) and the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) jointly delivered the project in line with the broader mission of research support, building government capacities and suggesting science-based response strategies as adaptation measures. The project experience highly recommends the adoption of CSA in Pakistan.

Abstract There is a prevalent notion regarding divergence in the extent of ethnocentrism and the intercultural willingness to communicate across cultures. Given this cultural divergence, research is replete with comparative studies of ethnocentrism and the intercultural willingness to communicate between individualistic and collectivistic cultures. However, to our knowledge, a comparison of these crucial cultural tendencies within and their consequences for collectivistic cultures has been overlooked. Thus, this study provides a cross-cultural comparison of ethnocentrism and the intercultural willingness to communicate among university students from two collectivist cultures, i.e., Pakistan and China. The researchers employed a cross-sectional design. A sample of 775 students was collected using a survey technique. The findings show that Pakistani students are more ethnocentric and have a lower intercultural willingness to communicate than Chinese students. Moreover, males were found to be more ethnocentric and less willing to communicate in intercultural settings than females in both countries. These findings validate the notion of ethnocentrism divergence across collectivistic countries and its influence on the intercultural willingness to communicate. Additionally, they demonstrate the role of demographic attributes in evolving ethnocentrism and the intercultural willingness to communicate. Accordingly, these findings also confirm the ecological assumption that contextual factors, such as demographic attributes (e.g., past interactions with foreigners), influence communication schemas. Therefore, concerning its management, these findings suggest that increased people-to-people interactions between the two focal countries can better foster their mutual understanding to reap an increased harvest of the fruits of the Belt and Road Initiative.

The study investigates the impacts of financial development, electricity use, and technology innovation on CO2 emissions. International trade also plays an essential role in the economic development of Pakistan. Studying the relationship between ecological parameters, technological innovation, electricity use, and CO2 emissions is necessary to formulate the country's reasonable and practical energy policies. Based on the study's use of data from 292 Pakistani firms from 2006 to 2021, the paper investigates the mechanism of the role between financial development, electricity use, technological innovation, international trade, and CO2 emissions using the spatial Durbin model. The results reveal that the effect of economic growth, electricity use, and technological innovation on CO2 emissions has a spatial spillover effect. The results verify that international trade and the transport sector promote the country's carbon emissions. The typical speculation spike on technology innovation enhanced and financial development should concentrate more on protective ecological parameters. The research provides theoretical guidance for solving the contradictory problem of renewable energy use growth and CO2 emission limitation while promoting green and low-carbon development in the country.

Abstract The identification of novel drug-target interactions (DTI) is critical to drug discovery and drug repurposing to address contemporary medical and public health challenges presented by emergent diseases. Historically, computational methods have framed DTI prediction as a binary classification problem (indicating whether or not a drug physically interacts with a given protein target); however, framing the problem instead as a regression-based prediction of the physiochemical binding affinity is more meaningful. With growing databases of experimentally derived drug-target interactions (e.g. Davis, Binding-DB, and Kiba), deep learning-based DTI predictors can be effectively leveraged to achieve state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance. In this work, we formulated a DTI competition as part of the coursework for a senior undergraduate machine learning course and challenged students to generate component DTI models that might surpass SOTA models and effectively combine these component models as part of a meta-model using the Reciprocal Perspective (RP) multi-view learning framework. Following 6 weeks of concerted effort, 28 student-produced component deep-learning DTI models were leveraged in this work to produce a new SOTA RP-DTI model, denoted the Meta Undergraduate Student DTI (MUSDTI) model. Through a series of experiments we demonstrate that (1) RP can considerably improve SOTA DTI prediction, (2) our new double-cold experimental design is more appropriate for emergent DTI challenges, (3) that our novel MUSDTI meta-model outperforms SOTA models, (4) that RP can improve upon individual models as an ensembling method, and finally, (5) RP can be utilized for low computation transfer learning. This work introduces a number of important revelations for the field of DTI prediction and sequence-based, pairwise prediction in general.

Technological advances have played a critical role in the production of flower crops, enabling farmers to maximize yields and reduce losses while also improving the quality of flowers. These advances have included the development of new breeding techniques, such as molecular marker-assisted breeding, and the use of modern technologies like high-throughput phenotyping to identify and select superior cultivars. In addition, precision farming techniques, such as the use of sensors and remote monitoring systems, have made it possible to closely monitor crop growth and optimize inputs like water and fertilizer, leading to higher yields and improved resource efficiency. Advancements in biotechnology have also resulted in the development of transgenic plants that are resistant to pests and diseases, reducing the need for chemical pesticides and improving plant health. Modern molecular genetic tools, particularly genome editing with CRISPR/Cas9 nucleases, are emerging in addition to conventional approaches of investigating these plants. Furthermore, the use of novel growing systems, such as hydroponics and vertical farming, has allowed for year-round flower production in controlled environments, mitigating the challenges associated with seasonal changes and climate variability. These innovations have also made it possible to produce high-quality flowers in urban areas, bringing fresh blooms closer to consumers. Overall, technological advances in flower crops have revolutionized the floriculture industry, enabling growers to produce high-quality flowers in a more sustainable and efficient manner. These advancements have not only improved the productivity and profitability of flower farming but have also contributed to the conservation of natural resources and the protection of the environment.

Crack development in a changing environment is the controlling factor for the stability and strength of expansive soils. Expansive soils exhibit large volumetric changes with changes in their moisture conditions that may occasionally lead to reduced bearing capacity and foundation failures. This study purports to model crack initiation and its spatial progression in relation to the moisture content and drying period, respectively. Volumetric soil shrinkage is determined using high-definition digital camera imaging and Vernier scale methods, while the soil settlement under vertical shrinkage deformation could be captured through a tensile stress model for soils. It was revealed that a small change in suction could trigger crack initiation, which would propagate further under different environmental conditions. Furthermore, it was observed that the crack volume increased rapidly at specific moisture content and could penetrate as deep as 1 m after nearly 1.5 months that is fully consistent with the current model predictions. A comparison between the performance of the model proposed in this study and that of two existing models shows that the former predicts the vertical shrinkage strain values in closer agreement with those observed experimentally and is less conservative than those predicted by both models. Nevertheless, the findings from this study could be used to quantify the detrimental behavior of expansive soil present in pavement subgrades and shallow foundations for lightweight structures.

One of the most significant and critical urban assets for a sustainable community is the sewer pipeline network and water distribution system. Water sewer networks and distribution systems have a definite service life span to provide continuous facilities to end users. Therefore, it is pertinent to continuously evaluate the condition of water and sewer concrete pipelines to ensure the reliable, sustainable, and cost-efficient transport of water and sewerage for the safety of society. The condition assessment is commonly carried out by visual observations followed by some non-destructive testing methods. However, it is the need of the hour to shift assessment methods to advance assessment techniques to save time and money for our community. Currently, in this project, the condition assessment of pre-cast concrete pipes was carried out by destructive and non-destructive methods. Different test trials i.e., ultra-sonic pulse velocity, Schmidt hammer also known as rebound hammer test, visual inspection, three edge bearing test, and core cutting test on the old buried and new concrete pipes were performed. It was observed that concrete used for the construction of existing precast concrete pipes still has better quality indices after 20 years as compared to that of concrete of new pipes. However, steel has deteriorated with time and clear corrosion of steel was identified in existing pre-cast concrete pipes. At the same time, it was observed that there should be an automated mechanism to continuously asses the condition of pre-cast existing pipes which will address the sustainable development goals (SDG 6, 9, 11). Consequently, it can be said that condition assessment of pre-cast concrete pipes will lead to sustainable societies and infrastructure.

Ornamental breeding has traditionally focused on improving novelty, yield, quality, and resistance to biotic or abiotic stress. However, achieving these goals has often required laborious crossbreeding, while precise breeding techniques have been underutilized. Fortunately, recent advancements in plant genome sequencing and editing technology have opened up exciting new frontiers for revolutionizing ornamental breeding. In this review, we provide an overview of the current state of ornamental transgenic breeding and propose four promising breeding strategies that have already proven successful in crop breeding and could be adapted for ornamental breeding with the help of genome editing. These strategies include recombination manipulation, haploid inducer creation, clonal seed production, and reverse breeding. We also discuss in detail the research progress, application status, and feasibility of each of these tactics.

Optic nerve health is essential for proper function of the visual system. However, the pathophysiology of certain neurodegenerative disease processes affecting the optic nerve, such as glaucoma, is not fully understood. Recently, it was hypothesized that a lack of proper clearance of neurotoxins contributes to neurodegenerative diseases. The ability to clear metabolic waste is essential for tissue homeostasis in mammals, including humans. While the brain lacks the traditional lymphatic drainage system identified in other anatomical regions, there is growing evidence of a glymphatic system in the central nervous system, which structurally includes the optic nerve. Named to acknowledge the supportive role of astroglial cells, this perivascular fluid drainage system is essential to remove toxic metabolites from the central nervous system. Herein, we review existing literature describing the physiology and dysfunction of the glymphatic system specifically as it relates to the optic nerve. We summarize key imaging studies demonstrating the existence of a glymphatic system in the optic nerves of wild-type rodents, aquaporin 4-null rodents, and humans; glymphatic imaging studies in diseases where the optic nerve is impaired; and current evidence regarding pharmacological and lifestyle interventions that may help promote glymphatic function to improve optic nerve health. We conclude by highlighting future research directions that could be applied to improve imaging detection and guide therapeutic interventions for diseases affecting the optic nerve.

Objective: To assess the cross infection control practices among undergraduates and graduates working in the department of Prosthodontics in various public and private dental colleges of Karachi. Methods: After approval from IRB, the self-administered questionnaire was sent via emails or social media platforms to undergraduate final year students and graduates currently working in Prosthodontics department of dental colleges of Karachi. Along with demographics, the questionnaire included close ended multiple-choice questions related to participants’ practice regarding cross infection control. A reminder was sent after 2 weeks to help improve response rate. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 23. Results: Out of total 617 respondents, there were 410(66.5%) final year dental students and 207(33.5%) house officers. Majority of participants 502(82.3%) had attended lecture regarding cross-infection control measures during their academic years, while only 178(28.8%) had attended hands-on workshops on the same. Majority 530(85.9%) recommended autoclave for sterilization for instruments. Almost all participants 603 (97.7%) wear gloves and perform hand hygiene 527(85.4%). More than two-thirds 416 (67.4%) respondents disinfect impressions, trial wax dentures, bite registrations and metal trials before sending to the dental laboratory. Almost 50% of the participants did not disinfect plastic impression trays, shade guide, rubber bowl, wax knife, carver and spatula in between patients. Conclusion: Results of this study highlight the need of re-emphasizing cross-infection control measures and practices in the Prosthodontics OPD. Strict administrative protocols should be set to implement cross-infection control practices. Lectures and hands-on workshops regarding cross-infection control, disinfection and sterilization should be a mandatory part of curriculum and be reiterated in continuing dental education seminars.

The Glutamicibacter group of microbes is known for antibiotic and enzyme production. Antibiotics and enzymes produced by them are important in the control, protection, and treatment of chronic human diseases. In this study, the Glutamicibacter mysorens (G. mysorens) strain MW647910.1 was isolated from mangrove soil in the Mangalore region of India. After optimization of growth conditions for G. mysorens on starch casein agar media, the micromorphology of G. mysorens was found to be spirally coiled spore chain, each spore visualized as an elongated cylindrical hairy appearance with curved edges visualized through Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) analysis. The culture phenotype with filamentous mycelia, brown pigmentation, and ash–colored spore production was observed. The intracellular extract of G. mysorens characterized through GCMS analysis detected bioactive compounds reported for pharmacological applications. The majority of bioactive compounds identified in intracellular extract when compared to the NIST library revealed molecular weight ranging below 1kgmole−1. The Sephadex G-10 could result in 10.66 fold purification and eluted peak protein fraction showed significant anticancer activity on the prostate cancer cell line. Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (LC–MS) analysis revealed Kinetin-9-ribose and Embinin with a molecular weight below 1 kDa. This study showed small molecular weight bioactive compounds produced from microbial origin possess dual roles, acting as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and anticancer peptides (ACPs). Hence, the bioactive compounds produced from microbial origin are a promising source of future therapeutics.

The research examined the influence of the fundamental exchange rate misalignment and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in Asia and Africa’s financial development on CO2 emissions in Asian countries using panel data from 1970 to 2021. The methodology consists of ARDL bound testing and PMG/ARDL estimators with dynamic OLS estimators. The results reveal that the long-run real exchange rates for least developed countries (LDCs) are expected to rise in CO2 emissions in Asian and African countries with improved trade and net foreign asset positions. The relative productivity and trade openness also increase the exchange rate, which also plays a vital role in the growth of CO2 emissions. Except for Egypt, all least developed countries (LDCs) currencies are overpriced throughout the research period at the same time; it would be harmed by increased openness, foreign direct investment inflows, and currency misalignment. Overvaluation harms Bahrain’s economic growth. In comparison, undervaluation helps Egypt that currency misalignment does not affect financial growth in any LDCs over the long run. In the short-run, more real investment, net foreign assets, and official assistance inflows would enhance financial growth in Qatar, Bahrain, Singapore, and South Korea. In contrast, trade openness would slow it down in Egypt and Kuwait. The study suggested that the poor economic performance is due to RER misalignment, which occurs when exchange rate policies are improper and causes a rise in CO2 emissions in many developing countries.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the shade selection procedure for anterior teeth among dental house surgeons, general dentists and specialists of Karachi. METHODOLOGY: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out to assess knowledge, attitude and practice regarding shade selection among house surgeons, general dentists and specialistsof Karachi from February-April 2020. A structured questionnaire consisting of demographic data along with multiple choice questions related to shade matching was used to collect data. Questionnaires were distributed by hand and electronically through google forms by non-probability convenience sampling to participants who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. House surgeons, general dentists and specialists involved in provision of fixed restorations were included in the study. Participants who refused to give written informed consent were excluded from the study. SPSS v.18.0 was used for data analysis. RESULTS: Out of the 350 forms distributed, 290 forms were returned completely filled, giving a response rate of 82.9%. Majority of house surgeons (70.96%), general dentists (72.46%) and specialists (56.75%) used visual method for shade selection in their practice, using the Vita classic shade guide. About 60% of specialist always selected the shade before any procedure and involved their team members and patients’ opinion, in comparison 59% of house surgeon always selected shade after completion of procedure. Most of house surgeon never filled shade mapping chart and faced difficulty during shade selection. Majority of practitioners had blue colored walls and cabinets in their practice and used fluorescent light for shade matching. Specialists always selected the shade at patients’ eye level within 5 seconds. CONCLUSION: Specialists have better knowledge regarding principles of tooth shade selection procedure as compared to general dentists and house surgeons.

Global warming has led to irregular precipitation patterns and various abiotic and biotic stresses, resulting in unforeseen consequences for wildlife. Plant species are particularly vulnerable to these global climate changes, struggling to adapt to the increasing stressors. Urban environments exacerbate these challenges, further hindering plant survival and growth. The declining number of climate- and urban-tolerant plant species is a direct consequence of escalating stresses. However, resistance breeding approaches coupled with environmentally friendly technologies like biostimulants offer hope by expanding the pool of adaptable species. Urban vegetation plays a vital role in mitigating the urban heat island effect, supporting mental well-being among residents, and preserving biodiversity. In this study, we comprehensively review recent research findings on these topics with a focus on publications from the past 5 years. Emphasizing stress-tolerant ornamental urban plants including trees and herbaceous species becomes crucial for establishing sustainable living practices. By incorporating resilient plant varieties into urban landscapes, we can enhance ecological balance while improving the overall quality of urban environments for both human inhabitants and wildlife populations.

Image-guided focal therapy has increased in popularity as a treatment option for patients with primary and locally recurrent prostate cancer. This review will cover the basic indications, evaluation, treatment algorithm, and follow-up for patients undergoing image-guided ablation of the prostate. Additionally, this paper will serve as an overview of some technical approaches to cases so that physicians can familiarize themselves with working in this space. While the focus of this paper is prostate cryoablation, readers will obtain a basic literature overview of some of the additional available image-guided treatment modalities for focal prostate therapy.

The study aims to explore the role of gender diversity in debt financing choices among Chinese listed firms. The study used the Chinese listed firm's data from 1991 to 2022 from the Chinese Stock Market return. The study used the fixed effect regression analysis and revealed that gender diversity positively affects debt financing among Chinese firms. Additionally, mass theory results suggested that at least three females on the board significantly influence firms. It served as the voice of gender diversity to influence the board's decisions regarding debt financing. The study has several theoretical and practical implications. This study will enlighten the Chinese boardroom dynamics by reassuring them to add more females to diversity policies. It will benefit future studies on boardroom activities and debt financing in emerging economies. It will be practical guidance for the Chinese policymakers, governing authorities, and corporate executives. The study stresses the need for significant diversity on the board rather than one female presence on the board. Secondly, this study contradicts the stereotype perception that females are not making risky decisions.
