Abstract

Diffusion tensor based cardiovascular magnetic resonance (DT-CMR) offers a non-invasive method to visualize the myocardial microstructure. With the assumption that the heart is stationary, frames are acquired with multiple repetitions for different diffusion encoding directions. However, motion from poor breath-holding and imprecise cardiac triggering complicates DT-CMR analysis, further challenged by its inherently low SNR, varied contrasts, and diffusion induced textures. Our solution is a novel framework employing groupwise registration with an implicit template to isolate respiratory and cardiac motions, while a tensor-embedded branch preserves diffusion contrast textures. We have devised a loss refinement tailored for non-linear least squares fitting and low SNR conditions. Additionally, we introduce new physics-based and clinical metrics for performance evaluation. Abstract

Motivation: Post-processing of in-vivo diffusion tensor CMR (DT-CMR) is challenging due to the low SNR and variation in contrast between frames which makes image registration difficult, and the need to manually reject frames corrupted by motion. Goals: To develop a semi-automatic post-processing pipeline for robust DT-CMR registration and automatic frame selection. Approach: We used low intrinsic rank averaged frames as the reference to register other low-ranked frames. A myocardium-guided frame selection rejected the frames with signal loss, through-plane motion and poor registration. Abstract

We present analytic solutions to the evolution in generalized tight-binding models, which consider complex first-neighbor couplings with equal amplitude and arbitrary phases. Our findings provide a powerful tool for efficiently calculating expectation values and correlations within the system, which are otherwise difficult to compute numerically. We apply our results to relevant examples in quantum light manipulation using N-port linear couplers, describing the evolution of single(multi)-mode squeezing, single photon added (subtracted) Gaussian states, and second-order site-to-site photon correlations. Significantly, our analytic results outperform standard numerical calculations. Our study paves the way for a comprehensive mathematical framework describing the spatial evolution of quantum states across a wide range of physical systems governed by the tight-binding model., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

Diffusion tensor cardiac magnetic resonance (DT-CMR) is a method capable of providing non-invasive measurements of myocardial microstructure. Image registration is essential to correct image shifts due to intra and inter breath-hold motion and imperfect cardiac triggering. Registration is challenging in DT-CMR due to the low signal-to-noise and various contrasts induced by the diffusion encoding in the myocardium and surrounding organs. Traditional deformable registration corrects through-plane motion but at the risk of destroying the texture information while rigid registration inefficiently discards frames with local deformation. In this study, we explored the possibility of deep learning-based deformable registration on DT-CMR. Based on the noise suppression using low-rank features and diffusion encoding suppression using variational auto encoder-decoder, a B-spline based registration network extracted the displacement fields and maintained the texture features of DT-CMR. 12. Motion-corrected simultaneous cardiac PET-MR imaging

Abstract

Simultaneous cardiac positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance (PETMR) imaging is a promising non-invasive hybrid technique for comprehensive assessment of cardiovascular disease in a single examination. However, image degradation due to respiratory and cardiac motion during data acquisition remains a major challenge that has hindered the adoption of PET-MR in the clinical setting. State-of-the-art PET-MR technical developments have focused on using MR information for improving PET image quality. However, this significantly increases the overall examination time, since diagnostic MR images need to be acquired after the PET-MR scan. Furthermore, this approach leads to misaligned PET and MR images that are difficult to interpret together. In this thesis a novel framework for truly simultaneous motion-corrected cardiac PET-MR has been developed. This was achieved by designing an MR acquisition sequence that allowed the measurement of physiological respiratory and cardiac motion while producing coronary MR angiography (CMRA) images, and a reconstruction scheme that included this motion information to produce co-registered motion-corrected cardiac PET and CMRA images from a single efficient examination with short and predictable scan time. This general framework was implemented for three applications. First, a scheme that enables respiratory motion-corrected PET-CMRA was developed. The scheme was validated in healthy subjects, oncology patients and patients with cardiac disease, enabling assessment of myocardial viability by PET and visualisation of coronary artery anatomy by CMRA. The second application extended this scheme to include both cardiac and respiratory motion-correction of PET and CMRA data. In this approach, left ventricular function can also be measured by MR, potentially allowing for a comprehensive assessment of coronary artery disease from a single scan of ∼12 minutes. Finally, the proposed scheme was extended to perform water-fat CMRA imaging, enabling the simultaneous visualisation of coronary anatomy and cardiac fat, and estimation of respiratory-resolved attenuation correction maps to further improve the quantification of the cardiac PET images.

Abstract

Purpose: Simultaneous PET‐MRI improves inflammatory cardiac disease diagnosis. However, challenges persist in respiratory motion and mis‐registration between free‐breathing 3D PET and 2D breath‐held MR images. We propose a free‐breathing non‐rigid motion‐compensated 3D T2‐mapping sequence enabling whole‐heart myocardial tissue characterization in a hybrid 3T PET‐MR system and provides non‐rigid respiratory motion fields to correct also simultaneously acquired PET data. Methods: Free‐breathing 3D whole‐heart T2‐mapping was implemented on a hybrid 3T PET‐MRI system. Three datasets were acquired with different T2‐preparation modules (0, 28, 55 ms) using 3‐fold undersampled variable‐density Cartesian trajectory. Respiratory motion was estimated via virtual 3D image navigators, enabling multi‐contrast non‐rigid motion‐corrected MR reconstruction. T2‐maps were computed using dictionary‐matching. Approach was tested in phantom, 8 healthy subjects, 14 MR only and 2 PET‐MR patients with suspected cardiac disease and compared with spin echo reference (phantom) and clinical 2D T2‐mapping (in‐vivo). Results: Phantom results show a high correlation (R2 = 0.996) between proposed approach and gold standard 2D T2 mapping. In‐vivo 3D T2‐mapping average values in healthy subjects (39.0 ± 1.4 ms) and patients (healthy tissue) (39.1 ± 1.4 ms) agree with conventional 2D T2‐mapping (healthy = 38.6 ± 1.2 ms, patients = 40.3 ± 1.7 ms). Bland–Altman analysis reveals bias of 1.8 ms and 95% limits of agreement (LOA) of −2.4‐6 ms for healthy subjects, and bias of 1.3 ms and 95% LOA of −1.9 to 4.6 ms for patients. Conclusion: Validated efficient 3D whole‐heart T2‐mapping at hybrid 3T PET‐MRI provides myocardial inflammation characterization and non‐rigid respiratory motion fields for simultaneous PET data correction. Comparable T2 values were achieved with both 3D and 2D methods. Improved image quality was observed in the PET images after MR‐based motion correction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
