Search

Point tomography is a new approach to the problem of state estimation, which is arguably the most efficient and simple method for modern high-precision quantum information experiments. In this scenario, the experimenter knows the target state that their device should prepare, except that intrinsic systematic errors will create small discrepancies in the state actually produced. By introducing a new kind of informationally complete measurement, dubbed Fisher-symmetric measurements, point tomography determines deviations from the expected state with optimal efficiency. In this method, the number of outcomes of a measurement saturating the Gill-Massar limit for reconstructing a $d$-dimensional quantum states can be reduced from $\sim 4d-3$ to only $2d-1$ outcomes. Thus, providing better scalability as the dimension increases. Here we demonstrate the experimental viability of point tomography. Using a modern photonic platform constructed with state-of-the-art multicore optical fiber technology, we generate 4-dimensional quantum states and implement seven-outcome Fisher-symmetric measurements. Our experimental results exhibit the main feature of point tomography, namely a precision close to the Gill-Massar limit with a single few-outcome measurement. Specifically, we achieved a precision of $3.8/N$ while the Gill-Massar limit for $d=4$ is $3/N$ ($N$ being the ensemble size)., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

The entanglement of electronic spin and orbital degrees of freedom is often the precursor to emergent behaviors in condensed matter systems. With considerable spin-orbit coupling strength, the cobalt atom on a honeycomb lattice offers a platform that can make accessible the study of novel magnetic ground states. Using temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy and high-magnetic field Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, we studied the lattice and spin-orbital excitations in CoTiO$_3$, an antiferromagnetic material that exhibits topologically protected magnon Dirac crossings in the Brillouin zone. Under the application of an external magnetic field up to 22 T along the crystal's $c$-axis, we observed the splitting of both the spin-orbital excitations and a phonon nearby in energy. Using density functional theory (DFT), we identify a number of new modes that below the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition become Raman-active due to the zone-folding of the Brillouin zone caused by the doubling of the magnetic unit cell. We use a model that includes both the spin and orbital degrees of freedom of the Co$^{2+}$ ions to explain the spin-orbital excitation energies and their behavior in an applied field. Our experimental observations along with several deviations from the model behavior point to significant coupling between the spin-orbital and the lattice excitations.

We describe the design of a Thomson scattering (TS) diagnostic to be used on the SMall Aspect Ratio Tokamak (SMART). SMART is a spherical tokamak being commissioned in Spain that aims to explore positive triangularity (PT) and negative triangularity (NT) plasma scenarios at a low aspect ratio. The SMART TS diagnostic is designed to enable a wide range of electron temperature (1 eV to 1 keV) and density (0.5 - 10 $\times 10^{19} ~\rm{m^{ - 3}}$) measurements. A 2Joule laser operating at 1064 nm will be used to probe the electron temperature and density of the plasma. The laser is capable of operating in the burst mode at 1kHz, 2kHz, and 4kHz to investigate fast phenomena or at $30$ Hz to study 1 sec (or more) long discharges. The scattered light will be collected over an angular range of 60-120 degrees at 28 spatial points in the midplane covering the core region and edge plasma on both the low-field side (LFS) and the high-field side (HFS). Simulation data is used to determine the optimum location of Thomson scattering measurement points to effectively resolve the edge pedestal in the LFS and HFS regions under different triangularity conditions. Each scattering signal will be spectrally resolved on five wavelength channels of a polychromator to obtain the electron temperature measurement. CHEOPS is a space telescope specifically designed to monitor transiting exoplanets orbiting bright stars. In September 2023, CHEOPS completed its nominal mission and remains in excellent operational conditions. The mission has been extended until the end of 2026. Scientific and instrumental data have been collected throughout in-orbit commissioning and nominal operations, enabling a comprehensive analysis of the mission's performance. In this article, we present the results of this analysis with a twofold goal. First, we aim to inform the scientific community about the present status of the mission and what can be expected as the instrument ages. Secondly, we intend for this publication to serve as a legacy document for future missions, providing insights and lessons learned from the successful operation of CHEOPS. To evaluate the instrument performance in flight, we developed a comprehensive monitoring and characterisation programme. It consists of dedicated observations that allow us to characterise the instrument's response. In addition to the standard collection of nominal science and housekeeping data, these observations provide input for detecting, modelling, and correcting instrument systematics, discovering and addressing anomalies, and comparing the instrument's actual performance with expectations. The precision of the CHEOPS measurements has enabled the mission objectives to be met and exceeded. Careful modelling of the instrumental systematics allows the data quality to be significantly improved during the light curve analysis phase, resulting in more precise scientific measurements. CHEOPS is compliant with the driving scientific requirements of the mission. Fullerenes have been observed in several astronomical objects since the discovery of C$_{60}$ in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectrum of the planetary nebula (PN) Tc 1. It has been suggested that the carriers of the broad unidentified infrared (UIR) plateau features, such as the 9$-$13$\mu$m emission feature (12$\mu$m hereafter), may be related to the formation of fullerenes. In particular, their carriers have been suggested to be mixed aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbons such as hydrogenated amorphous carbon (HAC-like hereafter) grains. For this study, we modeled the mid-IR emission of the C$_{60}$-PN Tc 1 with a photoionization code, including for the first time the laboratory optical constants ($n$ and $k$ indices) of HAC-like dust at 300 K. Interestingly, we find that the broad 12$\mu$m plateau feature in Tc 1 is well reproduced by using a distribution of canonical HAC grains, while at the same time they provide an important fraction of the IR dust continuum emission and are consistent with the other UIR features observed (e.g., the broad 6$-$9$\mu$m plateau feature). This finding suggests that HAC-like grains may be possible carriers of the 12$\mu$m plateau feature, being likely related to the fullerene formation mechanism in PNe. More laboratory experiments, to obtain the optical constants of HAC-like dust with several structures or a composition at different physical conditions, are strongly encouraged -- that is, in order to extend this pilot study to more fullerene PNe, and to unveil the details of fullerene formation and of the potential carriers of the elusive UIR plateau features., Comment: Published in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters. 7 pages, 3 figures

Several planetary nebulae (PNe) have been found to contain both polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH-like) species and fullerenes (C$_{60}$) distinguished by their mid-infrared emission. Previous laboratory and astronomical studies suggest that the formation of both species could be related to the decomposition, by photochemical processing, of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (HAC) grains. Then, HACs and, seemingly, big-fullerene related species (e.g., carbon onions) have been suggested as potential carriers of the UV bump at 2175{\AA} and the far-UV rise common to interstellar extinction curves. Our goal is to investigate the UV bump with the possible presence of a HAC extinction component in the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra of C-rich PNe; both with detected and non-detected fullerenes. The considered sample includes three C$_{60}$-PNe (Tc 1, IC 418, and IC 2501) and the non-C$_{60}$-PN Hen 2-5. Independently of the presence of C$_{60}$ in their circumstellar envelopes, we found that the UV bump in all sample PNe is well explained by interstellar extinction, suggesting that species different from those of the foreground insterstellar medium, e.g., large fullerene-related species like carbon onions, are not the carrier. Interestingly, we found that PNe Tc 1 and Hen 2-5 show an absorption in the FUV rise. Their IUE continuum spectra may be very well reproduced by including the extinction curve of HAC-like very small grains (VSG). The possible presence of both species, HAC-like grains and fullerenes (C$_{60}$), in Tc 1 could support the HAC photochemical processing scenario for the formation of fullerenes in the complex circumstellar envelopes of PNe., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. Small metal-containing molecules have been detected and recognized as one of the hybrid species efficiently formed in space; especially in the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars. It has been predicted also that more complex hybrid species like those formed by metals and fullerenes (metallofullerenes) could be present in such circumstellar environments. Recently, quantum-chemical simulations of metallofullerenes have shown that they are potential emitters contributing to the observed mid-IR spectra in the fullerene-rich circumstellar environments of different types of evolved stars. Here we present the individual simulated mid-IR (~5-50 um) spectra of twenty-eight metallofullerene species; both neutral and charged endo- and exohedral metallofullerenes for seven different metals (Li, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Ti, and Fe) have been considered. The changes induced by the metal-C60 interaction on the intensity and position of the spectral features are highlighted using charge density difference maps and electron density partitioning. Our calculations identify the fundamental IR spectral regions where, depending on the metal binding nature, there should be a major spectral contribution from each of the metallofullerenes. We report the discovery by the TESS mission of a super-Earth on a 4.8-d orbit around an inactive M4.5 dwarf (TOI-1680) validated by ground-based facilities. The host star is located 37.14 pc away, with a radius of 0.2100+/-0.0064 R_sun, mass of 0.1800+/-0.0044 M_sun and an effective temperature of 3211+/-100 K. We validated and characterized the planet using TESS data, ground-based multi-wavelength photometry from TRAPPIST, SPECULOOS, and LCO, as well as high-resolution AO observations from Keck/NIRC2 and Shane. Our analyses have determined the following parameters for the planet: a radius of 1.466+0.063/-0.049 R_earth and an equilibrium temperature of 404+/-14 K, assuming no albedo and perfect heat redistribution. Assuming a mass based on mass-radius relations, this planet is a promising target for atmospheric characterization with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)., Comment: Accepted in A&A

Materials based on spin crossover (SCO) molecules have centred the attention in Molecular Magnetism for more than forty years as they provide unique examples of multifunctional and stimuli-responsive materials, which can be then integrated into electronic devices to exploit their molecular bistability. This process often requires the preparation of thermally stable SCO molecules that can sublime and remain intact in contact with surfaces. However, the number of robust sublimable SCO molecules is still very scarce. Here we report a novel example of this kind. It is based on a neutral iron (II) coordination complex formulated as [FeII(neoim)2], where neoimH is the ionogenic ligand 2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)-9-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline. In the first part a comprehensive study, which covers the synthesis and magneto-structural characterization of the [FeII(neoim)2] complex as a bulk microcrystalline material, is reported. Then, in the second part we investigate the suitability of this material to form thin films through high vacuum (HV) sublimation. Finally, the retainment of all present SCO capabilities in the bulk when the material is processed is thoroughly studied by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We investigated the origin of the Planetary Nebula (PN) M 1-16 using narrow-band optical imaging, and high- and low-resolution optical spectra to perform a detailed morpho-kinematic and chemical studies. M 1-16 is revealed to be a multipolar PN that predominantly emits in [O III] in the inner part of the nebula and [N II] in the lobes. A novel spectral unsharp masking technique was applied to the position-velocity (PV) maps to reveal a set of multiple structures at the centre of M 1-16 spanning radial velocities from $-$40km$\,$s$^{-1}$ to 20km$\,$s$^{-1}$, with respect to the systemic velocity. The morpho-kinematic model indicates that the deprojected velocity of the lobe outflows are $\geq$100km$\,$s$^{-1}$, and particularly the larger lobes and knots have a deprojected velocity of $\simeq$350km$\,$s$^{-1}$; the inner ellipsoidal component has a deprojected velocity of $\simeq$29km$\,$s$^{-1}$. A kinematical age of $\sim$8700yr has been obtained from the model assuming a homologous velocity expansion law and a distance of 6.2$\pm$1.9kpc. The chemical analysis indicates that M 1-16 is a Type I PN with a central star of PN (CSPN) mass in the range of $\simeq$0.618-0.713M$_\odot$ and an initial mass for the progenitor star between 2.0 and 3.0M$_\odot$ (depending on metallicity). An $T_\mathrm{eff}\simeq$140$\,$000K and log$(L/L_{\odot})$=2.3 was estimated using the 3MdB photoionisation models to reproduce the ionisation stage of the PN. All of these results have led us to suggest that M 1-16 is an evolved PN, contrary to the scenario of proto-PN suggested in previous studies. Planetary nebulae (PNe) consist of an ionized envelope surrounding a hot central star (CSPN) that emits mostly at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. Ultraviolet observations, therefore, provide important information on both the CSPN and the nebula. We have matched the PNe in The Hong Kong/AAO/Strasbourg H$\alpha$ (HASH) catalog with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV sky surveys, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 16 (SDSS), and the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) PS1 second release. A total of 671 PNe were observed by GALEX with the far-UV (FUV; 1344-1786{\AA}) and/or the near-UV (NUV; 1771-2831{\AA}) detector on (GUVPNcat); 83 were observed by SDSS (PNcatxSDSSDR16) and 1819 by Pan-STARRS (PNcatxPS1MDS). We merged a distilled version of these matched catalogs into GUVPNcatxSDSSDR16xPS1MDS, which contains a total of 375 PNe with both UV and optical photometry over a total spectral coverage of $\sim$1540--9610{\AA}. We analysed separately 170 PNe resolved in GALEX images and determined their UV radius by applying a flux profile analysis. The CSPN flux could be extracted separately from the PN emission for 8 and 50 objects with SDSS and Pan-STARRS counterparts respectively. The multi-band photometry was used to distinguish between compact and extended PNe and CSPNe (binary CSPNe) by color--color diagram analysis. We found that compact PNe candidates could be identified by using the $r-i < -0.4$ and $-$1$<$FUV$-$NUV$<$1 colors, whereas binary CSPNe candidates in given $T_\mathrm{eff}$ ranges (all with color r$-$i$>-$0.4) can be identified in the color region (FUV$-$NUV)$\leq$6(r$-$i)+1.3, $-$0.8$<$FUV$-$NUV$<$0.4 and r$-$i$<$0.75., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS. 26 pages, 8 figures

Several planetary formation models have been proposed to explain the observed abundance and variety of compositions of super-Earths and mini-Neptunes. In this context, multitransiting systems orbiting low-mass stars whose planets are close to the radius valley are benchmark systems, which help to elucidate which formation model dominates. We report the discovery, validation, and initial characterization of one such system, TOI-2096, composed of a super-Earth and a mini-Neptune hosted by a mid-type M dwarf located 48 pc away. We first characterized the host star by combining different methods. Then, we derived the planetary properties by modeling the photometric data from TESS and ground-based facilities. We used archival data, high-resolution imaging, and statistical validation to support our planetary interpretation. We found that TOI-2096 corresponds to a dwarf star of spectral type M4. It harbors a super-Earth (R$\sim1.2 R_{\oplus}$) and a mini-Neptune (R$\sim1.90 R_{\oplus}$) in likely slightly eccentric orbits with orbital periods of 3.12 d and 6.39 d, respectively. These orbital periods are close to the first-order 2:1 mean-motion resonance (MMR), which may lead to measurable transit timing variations (TTVs). We computed the expected TTVs amplitude for each planet and found that they might be measurable with high-precision photometry delivering mid-transit times with accuracies of $\lesssim$2 min. Moreover, measuring the planetary masses via radial velocities (RVs) is also possible. Lastly, we found that these planets are among the best in their class to conduct atmospheric studies using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The properties of this system make it a suitable candidate for further studies, particularly for mass determination using RVs and/or TTVs, decreasing the scarcity of systems that can be used to test planetary formation models around low-mass stars., Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures. One of the main scientific goals of the TESS mission is the discovery of transiting small planets around the closest and brightest stars in the sky. Here, using data from the CARMENES, MAROON-X, and HIRES spectrographs, together with TESS, we report the discovery and mass determination of a planetary system around the M1.5 V star GJ 806 (TOI-4481). GJ 806 is a bright (V=10.8 mag, J=7.3 mag) and nearby (d=12 pc) M dwarf that hosts at least two planets. The innermost planet, GJ 806 b, is transiting and has an ultra-short orbital period of 0.93 d, a radius of 1.331+-0.023 Re, a mass of 1.90+-0.17 Me, a mean density of 4.40+-0.45 g/cm3, and an equilibrium temperature of 940+-10 K. We detect a second, non-transiting, super-Earth planet in the system, GJ 806c, with an orbital period of 6.6 d, a minimum mass of 5.80+-0.30 Me, and an equilibrium temperature of 490+-5 K. The radial velocity data also shows evidence for a third periodicity at 13.6 d, although the current dataset does not provide sufficient evidence to unambiguously distinguish between a third super-Earth mass (Msin(i)=8.50+-0.45 Me) planet or stellar activity. Additionally, we report one transit observation of GJ 806 b taken with CARMENES in search for a possible extended atmosphere of H or He, but we can only place upper limits to its existence. This is not surprising as our evolutionary models support the idea that any possible primordial H/He atmosphere that GJ 806 b might have had, would long have been lost. However, GJ 806b's bulk density makes it likely that the planet hosts some type of volatile atmosphere. In fact, with a transmission spectroscopy metrics (TSM) of 44 and an emission spectroscopy metrics (ESM) of 24, GJ 806 b the third-ranked terrestrial planet around an M dwarf suitable for transmission spectroscopy studies, and the most promising terrestrial planet for emission spectroscopy studies., Comment: Under second review in A&A. The magnetic interactions that determine magnetic order and magnon energies typically involve only two spins. While rare, multi-spin interactions can also appear in quantum magnets and be the driving force in the ground state selection and in the nature of its excitations. By performing time-domain terahertz and magneto-Raman spectroscopy measurements combined with theoretical modeling, we determine the origin of the magnon excitation gap in Dirac antiferromagnet CoTiO$_3$. By adding a ring-exchange interaction in a hexagonal plaquette of the honeycomb lattice to both an XXZ spin model and to a low energy spin-orbital flavor wave model, a gap is generated in the magnon spectrum at the Brillouin zone center. Among the different types of switchable molecular compounds, sublimable Fe(II) SCO molecules provide a suitable platform to develop smart devices that respond to external stimuli. Here we report the synthesis, crystallographic structure and magnetic properties of three new neutral Fe(II) SCO molecules belonging to the {Fe[H2B(pz)2]2(L)} family with bidentate-alpha-diimine ligands L = 3-(pyridin-2-yl)-[1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine (tzpy), 5,5,6,6-tetrahydro-4H,4H-2,2-bi(1,3-thiazine) (btz) and 4,4,5,5-tetrahydro-2,2-bithiazole (bt) (1, 2 and 3, respectively), as well as two solvated forms of 1 and 3. All three desolvated compounds present thermal- and light-induced SCO transitions with different degrees of cooperativity and effectiveness. Furthermore, 1 and 2 are demonstrated to be sublimable under HV conditions affording homogeneous thin films 200 nm thick (TF1 and TF2) that retain the chemical integrity of the original molecules regardless the deposition surface. The SCO behaviour of the films is characterized by XAS technique revealing the partial retainment of both thermal- and light-induced spin transitions, yet losing the cooperativity. Finally, SCO/2D horizontal hybrid devices based on CVD-graphene are produced using these films. Being the first ones of this type utilizing molecules of {Fe[H2B(pz)2]2(L)} family, with L = tzpy and btz, the devices have allowed the successful detection of the thermal SCO transition through the electric properties of the CVD-graphene., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures

In the age of JWST, temperate terrestrial exoplanets transiting nearby late-type M dwarfs provide unique opportunities for characterising their atmospheres, as well as searching for biosignature gases. We report here the discovery and validation of two temperate super-Earths transiting LP 890-9 (TOI-4306, SPECULOOS-2), a relatively low-activity nearby (32 pc) M6V star. The inner planet, LP 890-9b, was first detected by TESS (and identified as TOI-4306.01) based on four sectors of data. Intensive photometric monitoring of the system with the SPECULOOS Southern Observatory then led to the discovery of a second outer transiting planet, LP 890-9c (also identified as SPECULOOS-2c), previously undetected by TESS. The orbital period of this second planet was later confirmed by MuSCAT3 follow-up observations. With a mass of 0.118$\pm$0.002 $M_\odot$, a radius of 0.1556$\pm$0.0086 $R_\odot$, and an effective temperature of 2850$\pm$75 K, LP 890-9 is the second-coolest star found to host planets, after TRAPPIST-1. The inner planet has an orbital period of 2.73 d, a radius of $1.320_{-0.027}^{+0.053}$ $R_\oplus$, and receives an incident stellar flux of 4.09$\pm$0.12 $S_\oplus$. The outer planet has a similar size of $1.367_{-0.039}^{+0.055}$ $R_\oplus$ and an orbital period of 8.46 d. With an incident stellar flux of 0.906 $\pm$ 0.026 $S_\oplus$, it is located within the conservative habitable zone, very close to its inner limit. Although the masses of the two planets remain to be measured, we estimated their potential for atmospheric characterisation via transmission spectroscopy using a mass-radius relationship and found that, after the TRAPPIST-1 planets, LP 890-9c is the second-most favourable habitable-zone terrestrial planet known so far. The discovery of this remarkable system offers another rare opportunity to study temperate terrestrial planets around our smallest and coolest neighbours., Comment: 31 pages, 19 figures, 7 tables. Employing a non-perturbative approach based on an instantaneous interaction between a two-level Unruh-DeWitt detector and a massive scalar field, we investigate the ability of the field to generate or destroy coherence in the detector by deriving the cohering and decohering power of the induced quantum evolution channel. For a field in a coherent state a previously unnoticed effect is reported whereby the amount of coherence that the field generates displays a revival pattern with respect to the size of the detector. It is demonstrated that by including mass in a thermal field the set of maximally coherent states of the detector decoheres less compared to a zero mass. In both of the examples mentioned, by making a suitable choice of detector radius, field energy and coupling strength it is possible to infer the mass of the field by either measuring the coherence present in the detector in the case of an interaction with a coherent field or the corresponding decoherence of a maximally coherent state in the case of a thermal field. In view of recent advances in the study of Proca metamaterials, these results suggest the possibility of utilising the theory of massive electromagnetism for the construction of novel applications for use in quantum technologies.

White dwarf (WD) stars are often associated with the central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe) on their way to the cooling track. A large number of WD star candidates have been identified thanks to optical large-scale surveys such as Gaia DR2 and EDR3. However, hot-WD/CSPNe stars are quite elusive in optical bands due to their high temperatures and low optical luminosities. The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) matched with the INT Galactic Plane Survey (IGAPS) allowed us to identify hot-WD candidates by combining the GALEX far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) with optical photometric bands (g, r, i and H$\alpha$). After accounting for source confusion and filtering bad photometric data, a total of 236485 sources were found in the GALEX and IGAPS footprint (GaPHAS). A preliminary selection of hot stellar sources was made using the GALEX colour cut on FUV-NUV>-0.53, yielding 74 hot-WD candidates. We analysed their spectral energy distribution (SED) by developing a fitting program for single- and two-body SED using an MCMC algorithm; 41 are probably binary systems (a binary fraction of ~55% was estimated). Additionally, we classified the WD star candidates using different infrared (IR) colours available for our sample obtaining similar results as in the SED analysis for the single and binary systems. This supports the strength of the fitting method and the advantages of the combination of GALEX UV with optical photometry. An Imaging Neutral Particle Analyser (INPA) diagnostic has been designed for the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) tokamak. The AUG INPA diagnostic will measure fast neutrals escaping the plasma after CX reactions. The neutrals will be ionised by a 20 nm carbon foil and deflected towards a scintillator by the local magnetic field. The use of a neutral beam injector (NBI) as active source of neutrals will provide radially resolved measurements while the use of a scintillator as active component will allow us to cover the whole plasma along the NBI line with unprecedented phase-space resolution ($ < $ 12 keV and 8 cm) and fast temporal response (up to 1 kHz with the high resolution acquisition system and above 100 kHz with the low resolution one); making it suitable to study localised fast-ions redistributions in phase-space.

The confinement of Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) particles in the presence of n=3 Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) in 15 MA ITER DT plasmas has been studied using full orbit ASCOT simulations. Realistic NBI distribution functions, and 3D wall and equilibria, including the plasma response to the externally applied 3D fields calculated with MARS-F, have been employed. The observed total fast-ion losses depend on the poloidal spectra of the applied n=3 RMP as well as on the absolute toroidal phase of the applied perturbation with respect to the NBI birth distribution. The absolute toroidal phase of the RMP perturbation does not affect the ELM control capabilities, which makes it a key parameter in the confinement optimization. The physics mechanisms underlying the observed fast-ion losses induced by the applied 3D fields have been studied in terms of the variation of the particle canonical angular momentum ($\delta P_{\phi}$) induced by the applied 3D fields. The presented simulations indicate that the transport is located in an Edge Resonant Transport Layer (ERTL) as observed previously in ASDEX Upgrade studies. Similarly, our results indicate that an overlapping of several linear and nonlinear resonances at the edge of the plasma might be responsible for the observed fast-ion losses. The results presented here may help to optimize the RMP configuration with respect to the NBI confinement in future ITER discharges.

A synthetic Fast-Ion Loss Detector (FILD) and an imaging Heavy Ion Beam Probe (i-HIBP) have been implemented in the 3D hybrid kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic code MEGA. First synthetic measurements from these two diagnostics have been obtained for neutral beam injection (NBI) driven Alfv\'en Eigenmode (AE) simulated with MEGA. The synthetic fast-ion losses show a strong correlation with the AE amplitude. This correlation is observed in the phase-space, represented in coordinates toroidal canonical momentum and energy. Fast-ion losses and the energy exchange diagrams of the confined population are connected with lines of constant E' , a linear combination of E and P{\phi} . First i-HIBP synthetic signals also have been computed for the simulated AE, showing displacements in the strikeline of the order of around 1 mm, above the expected resolution in the i-HIBP scintillator of approximately 100 {\mu}m.

Hybrid classical quantum optimization methods have become an important tool for efficiently solving problems in the current generation of NISQ computers. These methods use an optimization algorithm executed in a classical computer, fed with values of the objective function obtained in a quantum processor. A proper choice of optimization algorithm is essential to achieve good performance. Here, we review the use of first-order, second-order, and quantum natural gradient stochastic optimization methods, which are defined in the field of real numbers, and propose new stochastic algorithms defined in the field of complex numbers. The performance of all methods is evaluated by means of their application to variational quantum eigensolver, quantum control of quantum states, and quantum state estimation. In general, complex number optimization algorithms perform best, with first-order complex algorithms consistently achieving the best performance, closely followed by complex quantum natural algorithms, which do not require expensive hyperparameters calibration. In particular, the scalar formulation of the complex quantum natural algorithm allows to achieve good performance with low classical computational cost.

Context: TOI-2076 is a transiting three-planet system of sub-Neptunes orbiting a bright (G = 8.9 mag), young ($340\pm80$ Myr) K-type star. Although a validated planetary system, the orbits of the two outer planets were unconstrained as only two non-consecutive transits were seen in TESS photometry. This left 11 and 7 possible period aliases for each. Aims: To reveal the true orbits of these two long-period planets, precise photometry targeted on the highest-probability period aliases is required. Long-term monitoring of transits in multi-planet systems can also help constrain planetary masses through TTV measurements. Methods: We used the MonoTools package to determine which aliases to follow, and then performed space-based and ground-based photometric follow-up of TOI-2076 c and d with CHEOPS, SAINT-EX, and LCO telescopes. Results: CHEOPS observations revealed a clear detection for TOI-2076 c at $P=21.01538^{+0.00084}_{-0.00074}$ d, and allowed us to rule out three of the most likely period aliases for TOI-2076 d. Ground-based photometry further enabled us to rule out remaining aliases and confirm the $P=35.12537\pm0.00067$ d alias. These observations also improved the radius precision of all three sub-Neptunes to $2.518\pm0.036$, $3.497\pm0.043$, and $3.232\pm0.063$ $R_\oplus$. Our observations also revealed a clear anti-correlated TTV signal between planets b and c likely caused by their proximity to the 2:1 resonance, while planets c and d appear close to a 5:3 period commensurability, although model degeneracy meant we were unable to retrieve robust TTV masses. Their inflated radii, likely due to extended H-He atmospheres, combined with low insolation makes all three planets excellent candidates for future comparative transmission spectroscopy with JWST., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure, 8 tables. We present a complex field formulation of the quantum Fisher estimation theory that works natively with complex statistics on the dependence of complex parameters. This states new complex versions of the main quantities and results of the estimation theory depending on complex parameters, such as Fisher information matrices and Cram\'er-Rao bounds. This can be useful in contexts where the quantum states are described through complex parameters, as coherent states or squeezed states. We show an application of our theory in quantum communication with coherent states.

Light scattered off particles can become linearly polarized. Stars surrounded by oblique, co-rotating envelopes are therefore expected to manifest periodic linear polarimetric variations. The electron scattering magnetospheres of magnetic massive stars are expected to be suitable candidates to observe this effect. In this paper, we present the first semi-analytical model capable of synthesizing the continuum polarimetric signatures of magnetic O-type stars in an optically thin, single electron scattering limit. The purpose of this investigation is to improve our general understanding of magnetic hot stars by characterizing their polarimetric behaviour. Our linear polarization model is constructed by combining the analytical expressions for the polarimetric variations of an obliquely rotating envelope with the Analytic Dynamical Magnetosphere model to represent a physical model for the envelope density structure. We compute grids of model Stokes $Q$ and $U$ curves and show that their shapes are unique to the choice of inclination and obliquity angles. We apply our model to HD 191612, a prototypical Of?p-type star, having both polarimetric and photometric observations. We find that the polarimetric modulations are best reproduced with $i=19^{+12}_{-3}$$^\circ$, $\beta=71^{+3}_{-9}$$^\circ$, and $\log \dot{M}_{B=0}=-6.11^{+0.12}_{-0.06}$ [M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$]. These results agree with previous investigations of this star. Thanks to the relative ease of finding and characterizing small planets around M dwarf stars, these objects have become cornerstones in the field of exoplanet studies. The current paucity of planets in long-period orbits around M dwarfs make such objects particularly compelling as they provide clues about the formation and evolution of these systems. In this study, we present the discovery of TOI-2257 b (TIC 198485881), a long-period (35 d) sub-Neptune orbiting an M3 star at 57.8pc. Its transit depth is about 0.4%, large enough to be detected with medium-size, ground-based telescopes. The long transit duration suggests the planet is in a highly eccentric orbit ($e \sim 0.5$), which would make it the most eccentric planet that is known to be transiting an M-dwarf star. We combined TESS and ground-based data obtained with the 1.0-m SAINT-EX, 0.60-m TRAPPIST-North and 1.2-m FLWO telescopes to find a planetary size of 2.2 $R_{\oplus}$ and an orbital period of 35.19 days. In addition, we make use of archival data, high-resolution imaging, and vetting packages to support our planetary interpretation. With its long period and high eccentricity, TOI-2257 b falls in a novel slice of parameter space. Despite the planet's low equilibrium temperature ($\sim$ 256 K), its host star's small size ($R_* = 0.311 \pm{0.015}$) and relative infrared brightness (K$_{mag}$ = 10.7) make it a suitable candidate for atmospheric exploration via transmission spectroscopy., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 2 appendices, Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Large sub-Neptunes are uncommon around the coolest stars in the Galaxy and are rarer still around those that are metal-poor. However, owing to the large planet-to-star radius ratio, these planets are highly suitable for atmospheric study via transmission spectroscopy in the infrared, such as with JWST. Here we report the discovery and validation of a sub-Neptune orbiting the thick-disk, mid-M dwarf star TOI-2406. We first infer properties of the host star by analysing the star's near-infrared spectrum, spectral energy distribution, and Gaia parallax. We use multi-band photometry to confirm that the transit event is on-target and achromatic, and we statistically validate the TESS signal as a transiting exoplanet. We then determine physical properties of the planet through global transit modelling of the TESS and ground-based time-series data. We determine the host to be a metal-poor M4V star, located at a distance of 56 pc, with a sub-solar metallicity $(\mathrm{[Fe/H] = -0.38 \pm 0.07})$, and a member of the thick disk. The planet is a relatively large sub-Neptune for the M-dwarf planet population, with $\mathrm{R_p = 2.94 \pm 0.17} \mathrm{R_\oplus}$ and $\mathrm{P = 3.077}$ d, producing transits of 2% depth. We note the orbit has a non-zero eccentricity to 3$\mathrm{\sigma}$, prompting questions about the dynamical history of the system. This system is an interesting outcome of planet formation and presents a benchmark for large-planet formation around metal-poor, low-mass stars. The system warrants further study, in particular radial velocity follow-up to determine the planet mass and constrain possible bound companions. Furthermore, TOI-2406 b is a good target for future atmospheric study through transmission spectroscopy, particularly in the category of warm sub-Neptunes., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics
