The Labrador Sea is part of the Atlantic rift system which opens during Early Cretaceous times in the intracontinental domain. The rifting stage continues and generates an expansion center, with the establishments of an oceanic ridge during Late Cretaceous-Paleocene times. The rifting was asymmetric with a gradual propagation northward. The Cretaceous stretching and thinning of the continental crust led to the development of the transitional domain, with a controversial origin either thinned continental or oceanic. With this study, we bring new evidences for the presence of exhumed upper mantle in the transition domain based on geometry of the detachment faults, typical ���S��� shape, and we emphasize the role of the detachments in the rifting of continental crust and its ultimate break-up. We observed the lateral change, from South to North, of the continental to oceanic crust transition, from a step-up to a step-down. The structure of the Romanian Western Black Sea shelf has been studied for the last 50 years. This paper aims to give a new interpretation, highlight a new vision regarding the lower crust architecture by combining the known local data with new measurements. In 2005, a new set of gravimetric data was collected by the Romanian National Institute of Marine Geology and Geo-ecology (GeoEcoMar), in the project Marine Geohazard, financed by the EU, which summed up to thousands of gravimetric profiles on the Romanian and Bulgarian offshore. By combining the new data with the known geological setting, a new vision emerged regarding the understanding of the complex structural dynamics of the deep shelf area and the geomorphology of the deep geological structure. For this investigation, a set of 3 profiles have been constructed as a starting point for the geological structure. In the process of inserting data, we had to take into consideration all the implicit information available from the local wells that are considered a secure source of upperstructure information. Gas escape features are a common presence on any young sedimentary basins where large amounts of organic-rich sediments are deposited within a short time. The fast burial process conducts to maturation and carbonization of the sedimentary organic matter by bacterial and, later, by temperature transformations. The Black Sea is one such basin, where numerous shallow gas accumulation and gas escape features were observed and analyzed, ranging from gas hydrates, gas chimneys, flares, and mud volcanos. The study of such geological phenomena is important for identifying present seabed geohazards, and nonetheless for hydrocarbon exploration. Our study integrates newly acquired 2D high-resolution seismic lines, further used to correlate the gas escape features and their relationship with deep-seated faults, such as Peceneaga-Camena, and petroleum system of the Romanian Black Sea Shelf area. Soft power can be exerted by a variety of actors using different channels and tools. This paper focuses on actors and channels transmitting Russian messages and discourses in the Eastern Partnership countries. It contributes to enhancing our understanding of Russian influences in the region in two ways. First, it maps the network of influential actors who have the potential to transmit Russian messages and target various audiences. Second, it offers a detailed analysis of the coverage of Russia (and the European Union (EU)) in one important channel for dissemination of information about Russia and the EU: popular TV stations in Belarus, Moldova, and Ukraine. The analysis shows the presence of a wide variety of actors focusing on ‘compatriots’, religious bonds, and Russian-language speakers in the region, which reflects the key ideas of the ‘Russian World’ narrative. These actors promote Russia’s role as a centre of gravity and aim to appeal to Russians, Slavs and Orthodox Christians. This image of Russia, however, does not dominate the news programmes in any of the three countries. In Moldova and Ukraine, Russia is most often mentioned (negatively) in the context of security, while in Belarus it is covered more often than the EU in economy-related news items. Moreover, a large portion of the news about Russia and the EU has no positive or negative tone or is presented in a balanced way. In general, apart from what was conveyed by Russian TV channels, Russia does not have a more positive image than the EU in the news programmes in the countries we monitored.

The occurrence of colorectal cancer is related to the interaction that takes place at several levels between hereditary factors, environmental and individual ones. Understanding the molecular basis is important because it can identify factors that contribute to the initiation of development, maintenance of progression but also determine the response or resistance to antitumor agents. Understanding colorectal cancer at the molecular level has provided data used for genetic tests of family forms, it defined predictive markers used to select patients susceptible to certain forms of therapy and also for the development of molecular diagnostic tests to detect early non-invasive cancers. The retrorectal space represents the anatomical site at which level we identify the embryologic reminiscents in which it can develop liquid tumors - cysts or solid tumors - neoplasia. These tumors are rare but pose a diagnostic and therapeutic interest. This paper presents the case of a young 18 years-old diagnosed incidentally at a gynecological examination, with a palpable tumor developed, at the retrorectal space. Imaging examinations - transvaginal ultrasound and abdominal - pelvic computer tomographic exam - have supported the presence of a cystic tumor with a maximum diameter of 7.8 cm., in the space retrorectal. The lesion presented surgical indication, so it needed a posterior approach with resection of the coccyx enough for the control and safety of the operation. Histopathological examination revealed a dermoid cyst. Five years after surgery the patient is presented in good general condition, asymptomatic without clinical and imaging signs of local-regional recurrence.

A change in contractional polarity occurs when the direction of tectonic transport switches along strike. This switch is conditioned by lateral variations in rheology or inherited asymmetries, such as contrasts in structure or changes in the polarity of subduction zones. The parameters controlling contractional polarity changes are less understood in situations when the strain is transferred at large distances from indenters. Analysing this type of strain transfer is critical for understanding the mechanics of thrusting in fore- or back-arc settings of orogenic areas. Comparison of crustal-scale analogue modelling with the inversion of the Black Sea back-arc and the formation of the New Guinea-New Britain fore-arc suggest that far-field changes in contractional polarity are related to rheological contrasts across inherited normal faults. The initial extension creates rheological weak zones that localize the subsequent far-field contractional deformation along groups of thrusts with opposite vergence along the strike of the system. The largest amount of far-field contractional deformation is recorded in the transfer zone located between the two indenters moving in opposite directions and is particularly high when inverting oblique extensional systems.

A source to sink system describes the natural link between mountains, plains and deltas, by analysing the (re)distribution of material at shallow crustal depth and at the Earth's surface, exploring the links between coupled tectonic and surface processes. Sediment fluxes are the product of erosion and movement of material in and from sources (mountains), the transport and movement of sediments and solutes by river systems to the plains, and deposition and storage in sink zones. The ESF-EUROCORES TOPO-EUROPE SourceSink programme is a fully integrated research effort to significantly advance our predictive capabilities on the quantitative analyses of coupled active and past drainage systems by means of step-wise 4D reconstructions of sediments mass transfer, integrating geophysics, geology, geomorphology, state of the art high-resolution dating, and numerical and analogue modelling. The area selected for this programme is the Danube River Basin–Black Sea source to sink system, a world-class natural laboratory that is uniquely suited in the heart of Europe's topography, covering almost half of its surface, providing opportunities for excellent field sites to study in integration surface and subsurface data that cover the complete chain of source, carrier and sink. Quantifying and modelling the complete system in relation to the controlling parameters has resulted in significant understanding of forcing factors and linking temporal and spatial scales across multiple orogen and basin systems. This research has provided the opportunity to widen the geographical scope to other natural scenarios, where a number of mountain chains with similar geodynamic genesis separate sedimentary basins with comparable evolution.

The architecture of sedimentary basin is the result of the interplay between deep-seated tectonic processes at lithospheric or crustal scale creating or reducing the accommodation space, and the near-surface processes taking place in the source and depositional areas. Understanding the evolution of the sedimentary basin requires, therefore, an integrated study of the coupling between sediment routing and lithospheric processes that are responsible for basin formation, evolution and, ultimately, for its closure by complete stages of regressive basin fill, or inversion and exhumation. This thesis is focused on understanding the mechanism controlling the tectonic and sedimentary evolution of back-arc basins, from their opening to subsequent inversion. During the quest of understanding the particular type of basin formation and subsequent inversion in the Black Sea Basin, two main objectives were pursued. The first objective is related to understanding the role played by inherited extensional rheology in far-field transmission and localization of compressional deformation driven by an active orogenic area into a pre-existing back-arc domain. Back-arc contractional geometries are not necessarily controlled by major internal asymmetries, such as active subduction zones. Therefore, the presence of inherited rheologically weak zones controls the vergence of thrusting systems during back-arc inversion. The lateral variability of such weakness zones may create a contractional polarity change, which is a change in the thrusting vergence along the strike of the back-arc basin where its opposite margins act as indenters. This type of change, critical for understanding a number of worldwide basins, such as the Black Sea or the Huon-Finisterre arc, has received little attention so far in phenomenological studies. The second objective of the thesis is to understand the effects of large sea level variations in the depositional architecture and sedimentary exchange between basins connected through a shallow marine barrier. The objective is studied in the context of the Late Miocene-Quaternary sediment fluxes between the Carpatho-Balkans source area, the Dacian marginal basin and the Black Sea main sink by the means of seismic sequence stratigraphic analysis calibrated by wells in both basins. The thesis is organized in two main sections. Following a brief introduction in Chapter 1, two observational studies in Chapters 2 and 3 analyze the geometries and effects of Black Sea Basin back-arc opening and inversion, and the effects of the large scale sea-level drop recorded during the Messinian Salinity Crisis of the Paratethys. These observational studies form the base of the phenomenological process-oriented studies in Chapters 4 and 5 that analyze the mechanisms of backarc basin inversion by the means of analogue modeling. The thesis ends with the conclusions of Chapter 6.

International audience; This paper deals with power control structure design for low power fixed-pitch wind energy conversion systems (WECS) operating in large wind speed variation range. By using variable-speed operation capability, this structure achieves both output power maximization in partial-load regime and power limitation in full-load regime, in this latter case by using active speed stall technique. This control must ensure good dynamic performance in both regimes, as well as smooth transition between them, provided that such transition is accompanied by control phase reversal and also by important plant model changes. This paper proposes a comprehensive design approach of the respective power controllers and an original switching mechanism ensuring smooth transition. The experimental results performed on a dedicated test rig show good dynamic performance, being obtained regardless of the wind speed and the operating regime.

Beim System-in-Package (SiP) werden mehrere ungehäuste IC sowie passive Baulemente in einem Schaltkreisgehäuse montiert. Das erlaubt die Integration sehr komplexer Systeme, die aus verschiedenartigen Baugruppen bestehen. So lassen sich beispielsweise HF-Baugruppen zusammen mit digitalen Prozessoren und Sensoren kombinieren. Beim Entwurf dieser Systeme treten jedoch neue Fragestellungen auf, die durch die derzeitigen, auf System-On-Chip ausgerichteten Entwurfswerkzeuge nicht ausreichend beantwortet werden. Im Forschungsvorhaben Dionysys werden Erweiterungen der Entwurfsmethodik für SiP mit analogen und Hochfrequenzbaugruppen untersucht.
