4. Learning from Power Signals: An Automated Approach to Electrical Disturbance Identification Within a Power Transmission System

Abstract

As power quality becomes a higher priority in the electric utility industry, the amount of disturbance event data continues to grow. Utilities do not have the required personnel to analyze each event by hand. This work presents an automated approach for analyzing power quality events recorded by digital fault recorders and power quality monitors operating within a power transmission system. The automated approach leverages rule-based analytics to examine the time and frequency domain characteristics of the voltage and current signals. Customizable thresholds are set to categorize each disturbance event. The events analyzed within this work include various faults, motor starting, and incipient instrument transformer failure. Analytics for fourteen different event types have been developed. The analytics were tested on 160 signal files and yielded an accuracy of ninety-nine percent. Continuous, nominal signal data analysis is performed using an approach coined as the cyclic histogram. The cyclic histogram process will be integrated into the digital fault recorders themselves to facilitate the detection of subtle signal variations that are too small to trigger a disturbance event and that can occur over hours or days. In addition to reducing memory requirements by a factor of 320, it is anticipated that cyclic histogram processing will aid in identifying incipient events and identifiers. Abstract

The optical properties of materials at high temperatures, a few hundred degrees above room temperature, is of growing interest for plasmonic applications. Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) has shown promise as an alternative plasmonic material for high-temperature applications operating in the infrared. In this work, ITO thin films have been grown using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) and their high-temperature properties were investigated using heated ellipsometry.

Abstract

Excessive spatter formation in conventional CO2 arc welding significantly diminishes welding quality and efficiency, posing a critical challenge for industrial applications. To address this issue, this study investigated the mechanisms of metal transfer behavior and spatter formation under the influence of a longitudinal magnetic field (LMF) using a shadow-graph technique with high-speed imaging and back-laser illumination, also coupled with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-based arc-droplet numerical simulations. The results show that increasing the magnetic flux density (MFD) from 0 to 2 mT shifted the transfer mode from the repelled transfer to the globular transfer, while higher MFDs (3–4 mT) induced rotating repelled transfer. The globular transfer at 2 mT was considered to be primarily produced by the centrifugal effect due to the rotational motion of the molten metal inside the droplet, which was caused by the Lorentz force affected by LMF. The higher droplet temperature in this condition also contributed to forming this transfer mode, preventing the formation of repelled transfer through a decrease in the arc pressure. On the contrary, in the higher MFDs, the droplet temperature decreased to increase the arc pressure, lifting the droplet up. Furthermore, the very strong centrifugal effect rotated the molten metal column around the wire axis to induce the rotating repelled transfer. The spatter formation was found to occur with the two-stage motion of the curved long tail without LMF and at 4 mT, and also with the exploding molten metal column at 4 mT, due to an imbalance of the Lorentz force acting on the molten metal. On the other hand, the neck formation facilitated smooth droplet detachment without forming the curved long tail at 2 mT, reducing spatter significantly. These findings offer valuable insights for optimizing welding quality and efficiency by stabilizing globular transfer under an optimal LMF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

C4F7N–CO2–O2 is currently considered the most promising replacement for SF6 in high-voltage circuit breakers. During high-current interruption conditions, arc radiation plays a pivotal role in arc modeling and is frequently accompanied by vapors ablated from the electrodes and nozzles. To investigate the influence of ablated vapors on the radiative properties of gas mixtures, net emission coefficients (NECs) for various ratios of C4F7N mixtures and PTFE and Cu vapors are calculated under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium. The NECs for [C4F7N–CO2–O2]-PTFE-Cu mixtures that are obtained are required for radiation modeling and arc simulation in high-voltage circuit breakers. It has been found that neglecting the presence of PTFE vapor does not affect the NEC at high temperatures. However, the influence of copper vapor on the radiative properties in the high-temperature region becomes apparent at elevated ratios, and self-absorption is more pronounced at very high pressures. Abstract

Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a metal additive manufacturing (AM) process attracting interest from the automotive, defence, aerospace, architecture/engineering/construction and other industries because of its ability to manufacture large metal parts cost-effectively. Nevertheless, problems such as part defects and process efficiency remain, and consequently, efforts to improve WAAM are continuing. The WAAM process involves physical phenomena that include fluid flow, heat transfer, phase changes including melting, solidification and vaporization, multi-phase interactions, and deformations resulting from residual stresses—so obtaining a complete understanding is challenging. While numerical modelling is widely used to understand and assist with developing processes, modelling of AM processes such as WAAM is sophisticated because of their multi-physics and multiscale nature. This review addresses the existing and likely future roles of numerical modelling in advancing WAAM technology. Consideration is given to the known problems with WAAM, the different types of numerical modelling, including computational fluid dynamics, the finite element method, and smoothed particle hydrodynamics, and their potential to address persistent issues. Additionally, this review seeks to provide an understanding of the physics associated with the WAAM process, examines the trends in the development of WAAM technology, and recommends possible future directions. These include the combination of different physics-based modelling approaches to overcome their individual shortcomings, and the inclusion of modelling as part of a digital twin of the WAAM process. Abstract

Across the power grid infrastructure, deployed power transmission systems are susceptible to incipient faults that interrupt standard operations. These incipient faults can range from being benign in impact to causing massive hardware damage and even loss of life. The power grid is continuously monitored, and incipient faults are recorded by Digital Fault Recorders (DFRs) to mitigate such outcomes. DFR-recorded data allow for power quality forensics and event analysis, but this ability comes at the cost of high data storage and data transmission requirements. It is common for data older than two weeks to be overwritten due to storage limitations, without being analyzed. This inhibits the creation of long-term data libraries that would enable incipient fault forensics and the characterization of behavior that precedes them, which limits the development and implementation of preventive measures; thus, there is a critical need to reduce DFR-recorded data's storage requirements. This work addresses this critical need by leveraging the cyclic and residual histograms and introducing the frequency and Root Means Squared (RMS) histograms, which alleviate the current high data storage requirements and provide effective Incipient Fault Prediction (IFP). The residual, frequency, and RMS histograms are an extension of the cyclic histogram, reduce the data storage requirement by up to 99.58 %, can be generated on the DFR without interrupting its normal operations, and are capable of predicting voltage arcing six hours before it is strong enough to trigger a DFR-recorded event. 50. Views from the 'dustbin' : a phenomenological examination of the experiences of a borderline personality disorder diagnosis as a parent

Abstract

Literature highlights negative attitudes among different health and social care professionals towards individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Negative attitudes and inconsistent interactions are implicated in poor outcomes, including: increased stigma, self-stigmatisation, disengagement from treatment, and malignant alienation, often contributing to increased incidence of symptomatology, self-harm, and suicidal ideations and behaviours. To date, efforts to understand the extent to which these attitudes are internalised by service users, from the perspective of service users, are marked by their paucity. Coupling this with research highlighting poor outcomes among the children of individuals diagnosed BPD, along with a noted child protection risk among this group, the present research aims to increase understanding from the perspective of BPD-diagnosed parents themselves. The empirical chapters of this thesis see a phenomenological approach; through an IPA interview study and a phenomenologically driven series of focus groups, to examine diagnosis, experiences of care and treatment, and parenting. Findings highlight experiences of negative attitudes and interactions with service providers exacerbating stigma and self-stigma, lack of understanding of the diagnosis and how it relates to the individual specifically representing a barrier to engagement and therefore treatment. Little specific information is provided about the parenting challenges and capacities representing a significant aspect of the experience of participants. These findings are discussed in relation to previous research, demonstrating inconsistency and iatrogenic interactions during the period of diagnosis and treatment, identifying further impact on parents and parenting. The process and utility of diagnosis is also examined with a proposed diagnostic trajectory model applied to this participant group.
