Abstract

An increasing number of emerging applications, e.g., internet of things, vehicular communications, augmented reality, and the growing complexity due to the interoperability requirements of these systems, lead to the need to change the tools used for the modeling and analysis of those networks. Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) as a bottom-up modeling approach considers a network of autonomous agents interacting with each other, and therefore represents an ideal framework to comprehend the interactions of heterogeneous nodes in a complex environment. Here, we investigate the suitability of ABM to model the communication aspects of a road traffic management system, as an example of an Internet of Things (IoT) network. We model, analyze and compare various Medium Access Control (MAC) layer protocols for two different scenarios, namely uncoordinated and coordinated. Besides, we model the scheduling mechanisms for the coordinated scenario as a high level MAC protocol by using three different approaches: Centralized Decision Maker, DESYNC and decentralized learning MAC (L-MAC). The results clearly show the importance of coordination between multiple decision makers in order to improve the accuracy of information and spectrum utilization of the system.

Abstract

The population of older people should be supported to enjoy optimal quality of life. Health professionals should consider a range of interventions that support the older population to maintain their quality of life. One such interventional approach involves spiritual care. To explore what is known about spiritual care approaches for older people living in the community. Scoping review informed by Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines. Eight electronic databases were searched: CINAHL, Ageline, PubMed, ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health, PsycINFO, Scopus, Garuda, and Neliti. The review included quantitative and qualitative primary peer-reviewed research studies focusing on spiritual care interventions for older people living in the community published between 2011 and 2021 in English or Bahasa Indonesia. The search was uploaded into an electronic citation manager and imported into Covidence for screening. A total of 29 studies were included in the review. While the studies were conducted in five continents, most were reported from the Asian continent. Five key issues based on the outcome of interventions were found namely psychological, physical, spiritual, multidisciplinary approach, and social connection. This scoping review identifies spiritual interventions conducted across many countries have been implemented for older people living in the community. Although there are review limitations and further research is needed, these spiritual interventions, both faith-based and non-faith-based, are identified as useful to support the well-being of older people. The work carried out for this thesis focussed on four main areas: (i) the examination and optimisation of the conditions for carbon nanofibre (CNF) growth, both unsupported and as films on substrates; (ii) the electrochemical characterisation of the CNF material before (as-grown) and after solubilisation (oxidation); (iii) the formation and investigation of CNF thin film electrodes; and (iv) the (co-)deposition of the CNFs with metals from aqueous plating solutions. CNFs are grown at an iron nanoparticle catalyst produced from an iron oxide precursor. After exploratory work with different types of iron oxide precursors, a suitable and universally applicable catalyst is identified. CNFs are characterised by electron microscopy, spectroscopy, and electrochemistry. When grown onto a ceramic substrate, the 'as-grown' CNF material is shown to act as a porous, high surface area electrode with the ability to strongly adsorb aromatic molecules, such as hydroquinone, benzoquinone, and phenol.

Abstract

Anthraquinone dyes are tough to degrade compared to azo dyes, due to the resonance in the anthracene structure that leads to more difficulty in the removal and challenges the possibility of an effective decolouration/degradation process. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of copper and aluminium electrodes in electrocoagulation process for the elimination of an anthraquinone based aqueous solution of Red BFL dye. The efficiency of the electrodes in the dye removal was studied using X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy of the collected sludge, in terms of the respective M(OH)n formation which contributes in coagulation of the dispersed dye molecules and the results indicated that Al formed four types of hydroxides and Cu only one type. The maximum removal of the dye solution obtained with Al was 99.17% at the optimum conditions: pH 8, contact time 15 min, current density 40 A m−2, and 91.88% with Cu: pH 9, contact time 25 min and current density 60 A m−2. Phytotoxicity and ecotoxicity studies with Vigna radiata and Artemia salina was done to investigate the toxicity of intermediate products in the treated Red BFL dye solution, results showed that the Al used Red BFL dye solution was less toxic in comparison to copper.
