Search

M82 X-2 is the first pulsating ultraluminous X-ray source (PULX) discovered. The luminosity of these extreme pulsars, if isotropic, implies an extreme mass transfer rate. An alternative is to assume a much lower mass transfer rate, but with an apparent luminosity boosted by geometrical beaming. Only an independent measurement of the mass transfer rate can help discriminate between these two scenarios. In this Paper, we follow the orbit of the neutron star for seven years, measure the decay of the orbit ($\dot{P}_{orb}/{P}_{orb}\approx-8\cdot10^{-6}\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$), and argue that this orbital decay is driven by extreme mass transfer of more than 150 times the mass transfer limit set by the Eddington luminosity. If this is true, the mass available to the accretor is more than enough to justify its luminosity, with no need for beaming. Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) show signatures of accretion onto a supermassive black hole through strong, high-ionization, narrow emission lines extended on scales of 100s to 1000s of parsecs, but they lack the broad emission lines from close in to the black hole that characterize type 1 AGN. The lack of broad emission could indicate obscuration of the innermost nuclear regions, or could indicate that the black hole is no longer strongly accreting. Since high-energy X-rays can penetrate thick obscuring columns, they have the power to distinguish these two scenarios. We present high-energy NuSTAR observations of 9 Seyfert 2 AGN from the IRAS 12 micron survey, supplemented with low-energy X-ray observations from Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Swift. The galaxies were selected to have anomalously low observed 2-10 keV luminosities compared to their [O III] optical luminosities, a traditional diagnostic of heavily obscured AGN, reaching into the Compton-thick regime for the highest hydrogen column densities ($N_{\rm H} > 1.5 \times 10^{24}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}$). Based on updated [O III] luminosities and intrinsic X-ray luminosities based on physical modeling of the hard X-ray spectra, we find that one galaxy was misclassified as type 2 (NGC 5005) and most of the remaining AGN are obscured, including three confirmed as Compton-thick (IC 3639, NGC 1386, and NGC 3982). One galaxy, NGC 3627, appears to be recently deactivated. Compared to the original sample the 9 AGN were selected from, this is a rate of approximately 1%. The corona is an integral component of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) which produces the bulk of the X-ray emission above 1--2 keV. However, many of its physical properties and the mechanisms powering this emission remain a mystery. In particular, the temperature of the coronal plasma has been difficult to constrain for large samples of AGN, as constraints require high quality broadband X-ray spectral coverage extending above 10 keV in order to measure the high energy cutoff, which provides constraints on the combination of coronal optical depth and temperature. We present constraints on the coronal temperature for a large sample of Seyfert 1 AGN selected from the Swift/BAT survey using high quality hard X-ray data from the NuSTAR observatory combined with simultaneous soft X-ray data from Swift/XRT or XMM-Newton. When applying a physically-motivated, non-relativistic disk reflection model to the X-ray spectra, we find a mean coronal temperature kT $=$ 84$\pm$9 keV. We find no significant correlation between the coronal cutoff energy and accretion parameters such as the Eddington ratio and black hole mass. We also do not find a statistically significant correlation between the X-ray photon index, $\Gamma$, and Eddington ratio. This calls into question the use of such relations to infer properties of supermassive black hole systems., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. G.; Hugo, B. ; Kamphuis, P., We present the full panchromatic afterglow light-curve data of GW170817, including new radio data as well as archival optical and X-ray data, between 0.5 and 940 days post-merger. By compiling all archival data and reprocessing a subset of it, we have evaluated the impact of differences in data processing or flux determination methods used by different groups and attempted to mitigate these differences to provide a more uniform data set. Simple power-law fits to the uniform afterglow light curve indicate a t 0.86±0.04 rise, a t -1.92±0.12 decline, and a peak occurring at 155 ± 4 days. The afterglow is optically thin throughout its evolution, consistent with a single spectral index (-0.584 ± 0.002) across all epochs. This gives a precise and updated estimate of the electron power-law index, p = 2.168 ± 0.004. M51 ULX7 is among a small group of known ultraluminous X-ray pulsars (ULXP). The neutron star powering the source has a spin period of 2.8s, orbits its companion star with a period of 2 days, and a super-orbital period of 38 days is evident in its X-ray lightcurve. Here we present NuSTAR and XMM-Newton data on the source from 2019 obtained when the source was near its peak brightness. We detect the pulsations, having spun up at a rate of 3$\pm0.5\times10^{-10}$ s s$^{-1}$ since they were previously detected in 2018. The data also provide the first high-quality broadband spectrum of the source. We find it to be very similar to that of other ULXPs, with two disk-like components, and a high energy tail. When combined with XMM-Newton data obtained in 2018, we explore the evolution of the spectral components with super-orbital phase, finding that the luminosity of the hotter component drives the super-orbital flux modulation. The inclination the disk components appear to change with phase, which may support the idea that these super-orbital periods are caused by disk precession. We also reexamine the super-orbital period with 3 years of Swift/XRT monitoring, finding that the period is variable, increasing from 38.2$\pm0.5$ days in 2018--2019 to 44.2$\pm0.9$ days in 2020--2021, which rules out alternative explanations for the super-orbital period., Accepted for publication in ApJ

Ultra-luminous X-ray pulsars (ULXPs) provide a unique opportunity to study super-Eddington accretion. We present the results of a monitoring campaign of ULXP NGC 7793 P13. Over our four-year monitoring campaign with Swift, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR, we measured a continuous spin-up with $\dot P$ ~ -3.8e-11 s/s. The strength of the spin-up is independent of the observed X-ray flux, indicating that despite a drop in observed flux in 2019, accretion onto the source has continued at largely similar rates. The source entered an apparent off-state in early 2020, which might have resulted in a change in the accretion geometry as no pulsations were found in observations in July and August 2020. We used the long-term monitoring to update the orbital ephemeris and the periodicities seen in both the observed optical/UV and X-ray fluxes. We find that the optical/UV period is very stable over the years, with $P_\text{UV}$ = 63.75 (+0.17, -0.12) d. The best-fit orbital period determined from our X-ray timing results is 64.86 +/- 0.19 d, which is almost a day longer than previously implied, and the X-ray flux period is 65.21+/- 0.15 d, which is slightly shorter than previously measured. The physical origin of these different flux periods is currently unknown. We study the hardness ratio to search for indications of spectral changes. We find that the hardness ratios at high energies are very stable and not directly correlated with the observed flux. At lower energies we observe a small hardening with increased flux, which might indicate increased obscuration through outflows at higher luminosities. We find that the pulsed fraction is significantly higher at low fluxes. This seems to imply that the accretion geometry already changed before the source entered the deep off-state. The nuclear obscurer of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is poorly understood in terms of its origin, geometry and dynamics. We investigate whether physically motivated geometries emerging from hydro-radiative simulations can be differentiated with X-ray reflection spectroscopy. For two new geometries, the radiative fountain model of Wada (2012) and a warped disk, we release spectral models produced with the ray tracing code XARS. We contrast these models with spectra of three nearby AGN taken by NuSTAR and Swift/BAT. Along heavily obscured sight-lines, the models present different 4-20keV continuum spectra. These can be differentiated by current observations. Spectral fits of the Circinus Galaxy favor the warped disk model over the radiative fountain, and clumpy or smooth torus models. The necessary reflector (NH>10^25/cm^2) suggests a hidden population of heavily Compton-thick AGN amongst local galaxies. We report on the temporal properties of the ULX pulsar M51 ULX-7 inferred from the analysis of the 2018-2020 Swift/XRT monitoring data and archival Chandra data obtained over a period of 33 days in 2012. We find an extended low flux state, which might be indicative of propeller transition, lending further support to the interpretation that the NS is rotating near equilibrium. Alternatively, this off state could be related to a variable super-orbital period. Moreover, we report the discovery of periodic dips in the X-ray light curve that are associated with the binary orbital period. The presence of the dips implies a configuration where the orbital plane of the binary is closer to an edge on orientation, and thus demonstrates that favorable geometries are not necessary in order to observe ULX pulsars.These characteristics are similar to those seen in prototypical X-ray pulsars like Her X-1 and SMC X-1 or other ULX pulsars like NGC 5907 ULX1., 11 pages, 5 figures, Accepted to APJ

We present new radio observations of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very large Array (VLA) more than 3\,yrs after the merger. Our combined dataset is derived by co-adding more than $\approx32$\,hours of VLA time on-source, and as such provides the deepest combined observation (rms sensitivity $\approx 0.99\,\mu$Jy) of the GW170817 field obtained to date at 3\,GHz. We find no evidence for a late-time radio re-brightening at a mean epoch of $t\approx 1200$\,d since merger, in contrast to a $\approx 2.1\,\sigma$ excess observed at X-ray wavelengths at the same mean epoch. Our measurements agree with expectations from the post-peak decay of the radio afterglow of the GW170817 structured jet. Using these results, we constrain the parameter space of models that predict a late-time radio re-brightening possibly arising from the high-velocity tail of the GW170817 kilonova ejecta, which would dominate the radio and X-ray emission years after the merger (once the structured jet afterglow fades below detection level). Our results point to a steep energy-speed distribution of the kilonova ejecta (with energy-velocity power law index $\alpha \gtrsim 5$). We suggest possible implications of our radio analysis, when combined with the recent tentative evidence for a late-time re-brightening in the X-rays, and highlight the need for continued radio-to-X-ray monitoring to test different scenarios., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. We report on the discovery of a new, transient ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in the galaxy NGC 7090. This new ULX, which we refer to as NGC 7090 ULX3, was discovered via monitoring with $Swift$ during 2019-20, and to date has exhibited a peak luminosity of $L_{\rm{X}} \sim 6 \times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Archival searches show that, prior to its recent transition into the ULX regime, ULX3 appeared to exhibit a fairly stable luminosity of $L_{\rm{X}} \sim 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Such strong long-timescale variability may be reminiscent of the small population of known ULX pulsars, although deep follow-up observations with $XMM$-$Newton$ and $NuSTAR$ do not reveal any robust X-ray pulsation signals. Pulsations similar to those seen from known ULX pulsars cannot be completely excluded, however, as the limit on the pulsed fraction of any signal that remains undetected in these data is $\lesssim$20\%. The broadband spectrum from these observations is well modelled with a simple thin disc model, consistent with sub-Eddington accretion, which may instead imply a moderately large black hole accretor ($M_{\rm{BH}} \sim 40 ~ M_{\odot}$). Similarly, though, more complex models consistent with the super-Eddington spectra seen in other ULXs (and the known ULX pulsars) cannot be excluded given the limited signal-to-noise of the available broadband data. We present the discovery of a luminous X-ray transient, serendipitously detected by Swift's X-ray Telescope (XRT) on 2020 February 5, located in the nucleus of the galaxy SDSS J143359.16+400636.0 at z=0.099 (luminosity distance $D_{\rm L}=456$ Mpc). The transient was observed to reach a peak luminosity of $\sim10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the 0.3--10 keV X-ray band, which was $\sim20$ times more than the peak optical/UV luminosity. Optical, UV, and X-ray lightcurves from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Swift show a decline in flux from the source consistent with $t^{-5/3}$, and observations with NuSTAR and Chandra show a soft X-ray spectrum with photon index $\Gamma=2.9\pm0.1$. The X-ray/UV properties are inconsistent with well known AGN properties and have more in common with known X-ray tidal disruption events (TDE), leading us to conclude that it was likely a TDE. The broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) can be described well by a disk blackbody model with an inner disk temperature of $7.3^{+0.3}_{-0.8}\times10^{5}$ K, with a large fraction ($>40$%) of the disk emission up-scattered into the X-ray band. An optical spectrum taken with Keck/LRIS after the X-ray detection reveals LINER line ratios in the host galaxy, suggesting low-level accretion on to the supermassive black hole prior to the event, but no broad lines or other indications of a TDE were seen. The stellar velocity dispersion implies the mass of the supermassive black hole powering the event is log($M_{\rm BH}$/$M_{\odot}$)$=7.41\pm0.41$, and we estimate that at peak the Eddington fraction of this event was $\sim$50%. This likely TDE was not identified by wide-field optical surveys, nor optical spectroscopy, indicating that more events like this would be missed without wide-field UV or X-ray surveys., Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJ. We present $NuSTAR$ observations of four active galactic nuclei (AGN) located within 15 Mpc. These AGN, namely ESO 121-G6, NGC 660, NGC 3486 and NGC 5195, have observed X-ray luminosities of $L_{\rm 2-10\ keV, obs} \lesssim$ 10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, classifying them as low luminosity AGN (LLAGN). We perform broadband X-ray spectral analysis for the AGN by combining our $NuSTAR$ data with $Chandra$ or $XMM-Newton$ observations to directly measure their column densities ($N_{\rm H}$) and infer their intrinsic power. We complement our X-ray data with archival and new high angular resolution mid-infrared (mid-IR) data for all objects, except NGC 5195. Based on our X-ray spectral analysis, we found that both ESO 121-G6 and NGC 660 are heavily obscured ($N_{\rm H}$ > 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$; $L_{\rm 2-10\ keV,\ int} \sim$ 10$^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$), and NGC 660 may be Compton-thick. We also note that the X-ray flux and spectral slope for ESO 121-G6 have significantly changed over the last decade, indicating significant changes in the obscuration and potentially accretion rate. On the other hand, NGC 3486 and NGC 5195 appear to be unobscured and just mildly obscured, respectively, with $L_{\rm 2-10\ keV,\ int} $ 10$^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $\lambda_{\rm Edd} \gtrsim$ 10$^{-3}$, and are detected in high angular resolution mid-IR imaging, indicating the presence of obscuring dust on nuclear scale. NGC 3486 however, is undetected in high-resolution mid-IR imaging, and the current data do not provide stringent constraints on the presence or absence of obscuring nuclear dust in the AGN., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery of a third ULX in NGC 925 (ULX-3), detected in November 2017 by Chandra at a luminosity of $L_{\rm X} = (7.8\pm0.8)\times10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Examination of archival data for NGC 925 reveals that ULX-3 was detected by Swift at a similarly high luminosity in 2011, as well as by XMM-Newton in January 2017 at a much lower luminosity of $L_{\rm X} = (3.8\pm0.5)\times10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. With an additional Chandra non-detection in 2005, this object demonstrates a high dynamic range of flux of factor >26. In its high-luminosity detections, ULX-3 exhibits a hard power-law spectrum with $\Gamma=1.6\pm0.1$, whereas the XMM-Newton detection is slightly softer, with $\Gamma=1.8^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$ and also well-fitted with a broadened disc model. The long-term light curve is sparsely covered and could be consistent either with the propeller effect or with a large-amplitude superorbital period, both of which are seen in ULXs, in particular those with neutron star accretors. Further systematic monitoring of ULX-3 will allow us to determine the mechanism by which ULX-3 undergoes its extreme variability and to better understand the accretion processes of ULXs., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. M82 hosts two well-known ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). X-1, an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) candidate, and X-2, an ultraluminous X-ray pulsar (ULXP). Here we present a broadband X-ray spectral analysis of both sources based on ten observations made simultaneously with Chandra and NuSTAR. Chandra provides the high spatial resolution to resolve the crowded field in the 0.5--8 keV band, and NuSTAR provides the sensitive hard X-ray spectral data, extending the bandpass of our study above 10 keV. The observations, taken in the period 2015--2016, cover a period of flaring from X-1, allowing us to study the spectral evolution of this source with luminosity. During four of these observations, X-2 was found to be at a low flux level, allowing an unambiguous view of the emission from X-1. We find that the broadband X-ray emission from X-1 is consistent with that seen in other ULXs observed in detail with NuSTAR, with a spectrum that includes a broadened disk-like component and a high-energy tail. We find that the luminosity of the disk scales with inner disk temperature as L~T^-3/2 contrary to expectations of a standard accretion disk and previous results. These findings rule out a thermal state for sub-Eddington accretion and therefore do not support M82 X-1 as an IMBH candidate. We also find evidence that the neutral column density of the material in the line of sight increases with L$_X$, perhaps due to an increased mass outflow with accretion rate. For X-2, we do not find any significant spectral evolution, but we find the spectral parameters of the phase-averaged broadband emission are consistent with the pulsed emission at the highest X-ray luminosities., In press at ApJ

M82 X-2 is the first pulsating ultraluminous X-ray source (PULX)to be identified. Since the discovery in 2014, NuSTAR has observed the M82 field 15 times throughout 2015 and 2016. In this paper, we report the results of pulsation searches in all these datasets, and find only one new detection. This new detection allows us to refine the orbital period of the source and measure an average spin down rate between 2014 and 2016 of 5x10^-11 Hz/s, which is in contrast to the strong spin up seen during the 2014 observations and represent the first detection of spin down in a PULX system. Thanks to the improved orbital solution allowed by this new detection, we are also able to detect pulsations in additional segments of the original 2014 dataset. We find a glitch superimposed on the very strong and variable spin-up already reported, the first positive glitch identified in a PULX system. Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) provide a unique opportunities to probe the geometry and energetics of super-Eddington accretion. The radiative processes involved in super-Eddington accretion are not well understood, and so studying correlated variability between different energy bands can provide insights into the causal connection between different emitting regions. We present a spectral-timing analysis of NGC 1313 X-1 from a recent XMM-Newton campaign. The spectra can be decomposed into two thermal-like components, the hotter of which may originate from the inner accretion disc, and the cooler from an optically thick outflow. We find correlated variability between hard (2-10 keV) and soft (0.3-2 keV) bands on kilosecond timescales, and find a soft lag of ~150 seconds. The covariance spectrum suggests that emission contributing to the lags is largely associated with the hotter of the two thermal-like components, likely originating from the inner accretion flow. This is only the third ULX to exhibit soft lags. The lags range over three orders of magnitude in amplitude, but all three are ~5 to ~20 percent of the corresponding characteristic variability timescales. If these soft lags can be understood in the context of a unified picture of ULXs, then lag timescales may provide constraints on the density and extent of radiatively-driven outflows., Re-submitted to MNRAS after minor revisions, 7 pages, 5 figures

We present results from the major coordinated X-ray observing program on the ULX NGC 1313 X-1 performed in 2017, combining $XMM$-$Newton$, $Chandra$ and $NuSTAR$, focusing on the evolution of the broadband ($\sim$0.3-30.0 keV) continuum emission. Clear and unusual spectral variability is observed, but this is markedly suppressed above $\sim$10-15 keV, qualitatively similar to the ULX Holmberg IX X-1. We model the multi-epoch data with two-component accretion disc models designed to approximate super-Eddington accretion, allowing for both a black hole and a neutron star accretor. With regards to the hotter disc component, the data trace out two distinct tracks in the luminosity-temperature plane, with larger emitting radii and lower temperatures seen at higher observed fluxes. Despite this apparent anti-correlation, each of these tracks individually shows a positive luminosity-temperature relation. Both are broadly consistent with $L\propto{T}^{4}$, as expected for blackbody emission with a constant area, and also with $L\propto{T}^{2}$, as may be expected for an advection-dominated disc around a black hole. We consider a variety of possibilities for this unusual behaviour. Scenarios in which the innermost flow is suddenly blocked from view by outer regions of the super-Eddington disc/wind can explain the luminosity-temperature behaviour, but are difficult to reconcile with the lack of strong variability at higher energies, assuming this emission arises from the most compact regions. Instead, we may be seeing evidence for further radial stratification of the accretion flow than is included in the simple models considered, with a combination of winds and advection resulting in the suppressed high-energy variability., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Ultraluminous pulsars are a definite proof that persistent super-Eddington accretion occurs in nature. They support the scenario according to which most Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) are super-Eddington accretors of stellar mass rather than sub-Eddington intermediate mass black holes. An important prediction of theories of supercritical accretion is the existence of powerful outflows of moderately ionized gas at mildly relativistic speeds. In practice, the spectral resolution of X-ray gratings such as RGS onboard XMM-Newton is required to resolve their observational signatures in ULXs. Using RGS, outflows have been discovered in the spectra of 3 ULXs (none of which are currently known to be pulsars). Most recently, the fourth ultraluminous pulsar was discovered in NGC 300. Here we report detection of an ultrafast outflow (UFO) in the X-ray spectrum of the object, with a significance of more than 3{\sigma}, during one of the two simultaneous observations of the source by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR in December 2016. The outflow has a projected velocity of 65000 km/s (0.22c) and a high ionisation factor with a log value of 3.9. This is the first direct evidence for a UFO in a neutron star ULX and also the first time that this its evidence in a ULX spectrum is seen in both soft and hard X-ray data simultaneously. We find no evidence of the UFO during the other observation of the object, which could be explained by either clumpy nature of the absorber or a slight change in our viewing angle of the accretion flow., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. The presence of neutron stars in at least three ultraluminous X-ray sources is now firmly established and offers an unambiguous view of super-critical accretion. All three systems show long-timescale periods (60-80 days) in the X-rays and/or optical, two of which are known to be super-orbital in nature. Should the flow be classically super critical, i.e. the Eddington limit is reached locally in the disc (implying surface dipole fields that are sub-magnetar in strength), then the large scale-height flow can precess through the Lense-Thirring effect which could provide an explanation for the observed super-orbital periods. By connecting the details of the Lense-Thirring effect with the observed pulsar spin period, we are able to infer the moment-of-inertia and therefore equation-of-state of the neutron star without relying on the inclination of, or distance to the system. We apply our technique to the case of NGC 7793 P13 and demonstrate that stronger magnetic fields imply stiffer equations of state. We present results from a coordinated $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ observation of the type 1.8 Seyfert galaxy IRAS 13197-1627. This is a highly complex source, with strong contributions from relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk, neutral absorption and further reprocessing by more distant material, and ionised absorption from an outflow. We undertake a detailed spectral analysis combining the broadband coverage provided by $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ with a multi-epoch approach incorporating archival observations performed by $XMM$-$Newton$ and $Suzaku$. Our focus is on characterising the reflection from the inner accretion disk, which previous works have suggested may dominate the AGN emission, and constraining the black hole spin. Using lamppost disk reflection models, we find that the results for the inner disk are largely insensitive to assumptions regarding the geometry of the distant reprocessor and the precise form of the illuminating X-ray continuum. However, these results do depend on the treatment of the iron abundance of the distant absorber/reprocessor. The multi-epoch data favour a scenario in which the AGN is chemically homogeneous, and we find that a rapidly rotating black hole is preferred, with $a^* \geq 0.7$, but a slowly-rotating black hole is not strongly excluded. In addition to the results for the inner disk, we also find that both the neutral and ionised absorbers vary from epoch to epoch, implying that both have some degree of inhomogeneity in their structure., 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results from modeling the broadband X-ray spectrum of the Type 1 AGN 2MASX J193013.80+341049.5 using NuSTAR, Swift and archival XMM-Newton observations. We find this source to be highly X-ray obscured, with column densities exceeding 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ across all epochs of X-ray observations, spanning an 8 year period. However, the source exhibits prominent broad optical emission lines, consistent with an unobscured Type 1 AGN classification. We fit the X-ray spectra with both phenomenological reflection models and physically-motivated torus models to model the X-ray absorption. We examine the spectral energy distribution of this source and investigate some possible scenarios to explain the mismatch between X-ray and optical classifications. We compare the ratio of reddening to X-ray absorbing column density ($E_{B-V}/N_{H}$) and find that 2MASX J193013.80+341049.5 likely has a much lower dust-to-gas ratio relative to the Galactic ISM, suggesting that the Broad Line Region (BLR) itself could provide the source of extra X-ray obscuration, being composed of low-ionization, dust-free gas., 13 pages, 9 figures. The reported discovery of a cyclotron resonance scattering feature (CRSF) in the spectrum of M51 ULX-8 may provide an important clue as to the nature of the magnetic field in those ultraluminous X-ray sources hosting neutron stars. In this paper we present the covariance (linearly correlated variability) spectrum of M51 ULX-8 on long (> 2000s) timescales. This allows us to unambiguously decompose the spectrum which requires multiple components in order to explain the broad-band emission. Having a clearer picture of the spectral decomposition leads to various tests for the dipole field strength of the neutron star which can be extended to other ULXs when certain criteria are met. In the case of M51 ULX-8, we rule out a very strong (~10^15 G) dipole solution with either a sub- or super-critical disc. Instead, our tests indicate an upper limit on the dipole field of ~10^12 G, and a classical super-critical inflow, similar to that inferred in other ULXs found to harbour neutron stars, although we do not rule out the presence of an additional, strong (~10^15 G) multipole field falling off steeply with distance from the neutron star., 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRAS, updated following corrections

Ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) pulsars are a new class of object powered by apparent super-critical accretion onto magnetized neutron stars. Three sources in this class identified so far; M82 X-2, NGC 5907 ULX-1 and NGC 7793 P13, have been found to have two properties in common; $\sim1$-s spin periods, and for NGC 5907 ULX-1 and NGC 7793 P13 periodic X-ray flux modulations on timescales of $\sim60-80$ days. M82 X-2 resides in a crowded field that includes the ULX M82 X-1 separated from X-2 by 5", as well as other bright point sources. A 60-day modulation has been observed from the region but the origin has been difficult to identify; both M82 X-1 and X-2 have been suggested as the source. In this paper we present the analysis of a systematic monitoring campaign by Chandra, the only X-ray telescope capable of resolving the crowded field. From a simple Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis and a more sophisticated Gaussian Process analysis we find that only X-2 exhibits a periodic signal around 60 days supporting previous claims that it is the origin. We also construct a phase-averaged flux profile of the modulations from higher cadence Swift/XRT data and find that the flux variations in the Chandra data are fully consistent with the flux profile. Since the orbit of the neutron star and its companion is known to be 2.5 days, the $\sim60$-day period must be super-orbital in origin. The flux of the modulations varies by a factor of $\sim$100 from minimum to maximum, with no evidence for spectral variations, making the origin difficult to explain., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Two recent observations of the nearby galaxy NGC 6946 with NuSTAR, one simultaneous with an XMM-Newton observation, provide an opportunity to examine its population of bright accreting sources from a broadband perspective. We study the three known ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in the galaxy, and find that ULX-1 and ULX-2 have very steep power-law spectra with $\Gamma=3.6^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ in both cases. Their properties are consistent with being super-Eddington accreting sources with the majority of their hard emission obscured and down-scattered. ULX-3 (NGC 6946 X-1) is significantly detected by both XMM-Newton and NuSTAR at $L_{\rm X}=(6.5\pm0.1)\times10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and has a power-law spectrum with $\Gamma=2.51\pm0.05$. We are unable to identify a high-energy break in its spectrum like that found in other ULXs, but the soft spectrum likely hinders our ability to detect one. We also characterise the new source, ULX-4, which is only detected in the joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observation, at $L_{\rm X}=(2.27\pm0.07)\times10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and is absent in a Chandra observation ten days later. It has a very hard cut-off power-law spectrum with $\Gamma=0.7\pm0.1$ and $E_{\rm cut}=11^{+9}_{-4}$ keV. We do not detect pulsations from ULX-4, but its transient nature can be explained either as a neutron star ULX briefly leaving the propeller regime or as a micro-tidal disruption event induced by a stellar-mass compact object., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables. We present a unification model for a clumpy obscurer in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and investigate the properties of the resulting X-ray spectrum. Our model is constructed to reproduce the column density distribution of the AGN population and cloud eclipse events in terms of their angular sizes and frequency. We developed and release a generalised Monte Carlo X-ray radiative transfer code, XARS, to compute X-ray spectra of obscurer models. The geometry results in strong Compton scattering, causing soft photons to escape also along Compton-thick sight lines. This makes our model spectra very similar to the Brightman & Nandra TORUS model. However, only if we introduce an additional Compton-thick reflector near the corona, we achieve good fits to NuSTAR spectra. This additional component in our model can be interpreted as part of the dust-free broad-line region, an inner wall or rim, or a warped disk. It cannot be attributed to a simple disk because the reflector must simultaneously block the line of sight to the corona and reflect its radiation. We release our model as an Xspec table model and present corresponding CLUMPY infrared spectra, paving the way for self-consistent multi-wavelength analyses., Published in A&A. We present simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations spanning 3-78 keV of the nearest radio galaxy, Centaurus A (Cen A). The accretion geometry around the central engine in Cen A is still debated, and we investigate possible configurations using detailed X-ray spectral modeling. NuSTAR imaged the central region of Cen A with sub-arcminute resolution at X-ray energies above 10 keV for the first time, but finds no evidence for an extended source or other off-nuclear point-sources. The XMM-Newton and NuSTAR spectra agree well and can be described with an absorbed power-law with a photon index {\Gamma} = 1.815 +/- 0.005 and a fluorescent Fe K{\alpha} line in good agreement with literature values. The spectrum does not require a high-energy exponential rollover, with a constraint of E_fold > 1 MeV. A thermal Comptonization continuum describes the data well, with parameters that agree with values measured by INTEGRAL, in particular an electron temperature kTe between ~100-300 keV, seed photon input temperatures between 5-50 eV. We do not find evidence for reflection or a broad iron line and put stringent upper limits of R < 0.01 on the reflection fraction and accretion disk illumination. We use archival Chandra data to estimate the contribution from diffuse emission, extra-nuclear point-sources, and the outer X-ray jet to the observed NuSTAR and XMM-Newton X-ray spectra and find the contribution to be negligible. We discuss different scenarios for the physical origin of the observed hard X-ray spectrum, and conclude that the inner disk is replaced by an advection-dominated accretion flow or that the X-rays are dominated by synchrotron self-Compton emission from the inner regions of the radio jet or a combination thereof., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present analysis of Chandra X-ray observations of seven quasars that were identified as candidate subparsec binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) systems in the Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey based on the apparent periodicity in their optical light curves. Simulations predict that close-separation accreting SMBH binaries will have different X-ray spectra than single accreting SMBHs, including harder or softer X-ray spectra, ripple-like profiles in the Fe K-α line, and distinct peaks in the spectrum due to the separation of the accretion disk into a circumbinary disk and mini disks around each SMBH. We obtained Chandra observations to test these models and assess whether these quasars could contain binary SMBHs. We instead find that the quasar spectra are all well fit by simple absorbed power-law models, with the rest-frame 2–10 keV photon indices, Γ, and the X-ray-to-optical power slopes, α_(OX), indistinguishable from those of the larger quasar population. This may indicate that these seven quasars are not truly subparsec binary SMBH systems, or it may simply reflect that our sample size was too small to robustly detect any differences. Alternatively, the X-ray spectral changes might only be evident at energies higher than probed by Chandra. Given the available models and current data, no firm conclusions are drawn. These observations will help motivate and direct further work on theoretical models of binary SMBH systems, such as modeling systems with thinner accretion disks and larger binary separations.

We discovered 2.8 s pulsations in the X-ray emission of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) M51 ULX-7 within the UNSEeN project, which was designed to hunt for new pulsating ULXs (PULXs) with XMM-Newton. The pulse shape is sinusoidal and large variations of its amplitude were observed even within single exposures (pulsed fraction from less than 5% to 20%). M51 ULX-7 is a variable source, generally observed at an X-ray luminosity between $10^{39}$ and $10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$, located in the outskirts of the spiral galaxy M51a at a distance of 8.6 Mpc. According to our analysis, the X-ray pulsar orbits in a 2-d binary with a projected semi-major axis $a_\mathrm{X} \sin i \simeq$ 28 lt-s. For a neutron star (NS) of 1.4 $M_{\odot}$, this implies a lower limit on the companion mass of 8 $M_{\odot}$, placing the system hosting M51 ULX-7 in the high-mass X-ray binary class. The barycentric pulse period decreased by $\simeq$0.4 ms in the 31 d spanned by our May -- June 2018 observations, corresponding to a spin-up rate $\dot{P} \simeq -1.5\times10^{-10}\text{s s}^{-1}$. In an archival 2005 XMM-Newton exposure, we measured a spin period of $\sim$3.3 s, indicating a secular spin-up of $\dot{P}_{\mathrm{sec}}\simeq -10^{-9}\text{ s s}^{-1}$, a value in the range of other known PULXs. Our findings suggest that the system consists of an OB giant and a moderately magnetic (dipole field component in the range $10^{12}$ G $\lesssim B_{\mathrm{dip}}\lesssim 10^{13}$G) accreting NS with weakly beamed emission ($1/12\lesssim b\lesssim1/4$)., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present a broadband X-ray spectral analysis of the M51 system, including the dual active galactic nuclei (AGN) and several off-nuclear point sources. Using a deep observation by NuSTAR, new high-resolution coverage of M51b by Chandra, and the latest X-ray torus models, we measure the intrinsic X-ray luminosities of the AGN in these galaxies. The AGN of M51a is found to be Compton thick, and both AGN have very low accretion rates ($��_{\rm Edd} 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and find that a spectral turnover is present below 10 keV in most such sources, in line with recent results on ultraluminous X-ray sources., Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report a new changing-look quasar, WISE~J105203.55+151929.5 at $z=0.303$, found by identifying highly mid-IR variable quasars in the WISE/NEOWISE data stream. Compared to multi-epoch mid-IR photometry of a large sample of SDSS-confirmed quasars, WISE J1052+1519 is an extreme photometric outlier, fading by more than a factor of two at $3.4$ and $4.6 \mu$m since 2009. Swift target-of-opportunity observations in 2017 show even stronger fading in the soft X-rays compared to the ROSAT detection of this source in 1995, with at least a factor of fifteen decrease. We obtained second-epoch spectroscopy with the Palomar telescope in 2017 which, when compared with the 2006 archival SDSS spectrum, reveals that the broad H$\beta$ emission has vanished and that the quasar has become significantly redder. The two most likely interpretations for this dramatic change are source fading or obscuration, where the latter is strongly disfavored by the mid-IR data. We discuss various physical scenarios that could cause such changes in the quasar luminosity over this timescale, and favor changes in the innermost regions of the accretion disk that occur on the thermal and heating/cooling front timescales. We studied the nearby, interacting galaxy NGC 5195 (M51b) in the radio, optical and X-ray bands. We mapped the extended, low-surface-brightness features of its radio-continuum emission; determined the energy content of its complex structure of shock-ionized gas; constrained the current activity level of its supermassive nuclear black hole. In particular, we combined data from the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network (~1-pc scale), from our new e-MERLIN observations (~10-pc scale), and from the Very Large Array (~100-1000-pc scale), to obtain a global picture of energy injection in this galaxy. We put an upper limit to the luminosity of the (undetected) flat-spectrum radio core. We find steep-spectrum, extended emission within 10 pc of the nuclear position, consistent with optically-thin synchrotron emission from nuclear star formation or from an outflow powered by an active galactic nucleus (AGN). A linear spur of radio emission juts out of the nuclear source towards the kpc-scale arcs (detected in radio, Halpha and X-ray bands). From the size, shock velocity, and Balmer line luminosity of the kpc-scale bubble, we estimate that it was inflated by a long-term-average mechanical power ~3-6 x 10^{41} erg/s over the last 3-6 Myr. This is an order of magnitude more power than can be provided by the current level of star formation, and by the current accretion power of the supermassive black hole. We argue that a jet-inflated bubble scenario associated with previous episodes of AGN activity is the most likely explanation for the kpc-scale structures., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures. The existence of a large population of Compton thick (CT, $N_{H}>10^{24} cm^{-2}$) AGN is a key ingredient of most Cosmic X-ray background synthesis models. However, direct identification of these sources, especially at high redshift, is difficult due to the flux suppression and complex spectral shape produced by CT obscuration. We explored the Chandra COSMOS Legacy point source catalog, comprising 1855 sources, to select via X-ray spectroscopy, a large sample of CT candidates at high redshift. Adopting a physical model to reproduce the toroidal absorber, and a Monte-Carlo sampling method, we selected 67 individual sources with >5% probability of being CT, in the redshift range $0.0410^{24} cm^{-2}$, gives a total of 41.9 effective CT, corrected for classification bias. We derive number counts in the 2-10 keV band in three redshift bins. The observed logN-logS is consistent with an increase of the intrinsic CT fraction ($f_{CT}$) from $\sim0.30$ to $\sim0.55$ from low to high redshift. When rescaled to a common luminosity (log(L$_{\rm X}$/erg/s)$=44.5$) we find an increase from $f_{CT}=0.19_{-0.06}^{+0.07}$ to $f_{CT}=0.30_{-0.08}^{+0.10}$ and $f_{CT}=0.49_{-0.11}^{+0.12}$ from low to high z. This evolution can be parametrized as $f_{CT}=0.11_{-0.04}^{+0.05}(1+z)^{1.11\pm0.13}$. Thanks to HST-ACS deep imaging, we find that the fraction of CT AGN in mergers/interacting systems increases with luminosity and redshift and is significantly higher than for non-CT AGN hosts., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures.
