Miofloral and fossil charcoal analyses of the Permian deposits of the Barakar and Motur formations from core PKK-2B, located in the Pench-Valley Coalfield, Satpura Basin (India) were carried out to assess the floral diversity, evidence for palaeo-wildfire and age. Two distinct palynoassemblages are identified: Faunipollenites varius palynoassemblage and Gondisporites raniganjensis palynoassemblage dated as Kungurian (Cisuralian) and Guadalupian (Wordian-Capitanian), respectively. These assemblages show dominance of pollen attributable to Glossopteridales followed by Cordaitales and Coniferales. The occurrence of charcoal at two levels in the sedimentary sequence indicates the occurrence of repeated wildfires in the surrounding area. Macroscopic charcoal fragments exhibit anatomical features such as bordered pitting, rays and helical thickenings on cell walls of tracheids suggesting a gymnospermous wood affinity. Most of the charcoal specimens exhibit rounded edges suggesting an allochthonous origin. Furthermore, fusinite reflectance (1.03–6.61%) of studied charcoal/inertinite fragments suggests that the temperature was in the range of ~305–962°C during charring. This indicates co-occurrence of high-temperature crown fires, together with medium- and low-temperature surface and ground fires, respectively. Our data emphasise the dominance of gymnospermous vegetation during the Permian in India and adds further evidence for the widespread occurrence of wildfires during this period in India and on entire Gondwana as well. Macroscopic fossil charcoal fragments have been recovered from the borehole AK-19 (at a depth of 120.00 m) drilled at the Astona-Kothurna coal block, Wardha valley coalfield. In general, the occurrence of charcoal in sediments is accepted as a direct indicator for palaeo-wildfires. The charcoal fragments exhibits well preserved homogenized cell walls as well as anatomical details such as uniseriate and biseriate pitting patterns on tracheid walls under Field Emission Scanning Electronic Microscope (FESEM), suggesting a gymnospermous wood affinity of the studied material. The excellent preservation, their large size and almost unabraded edges of charcoal fragments suggest a par-autochthonous origin. This work documents for the first time a palynological assemblage in the Rajmahal Basin, tentatively considered probable youngest Late Pennsylvanian assemblage, which was hitherto considered early Permian. The palynocomposition consists of 39 species (5 spores, 25 monosaccate, 5 bisaccate- 3 non striate and 2 striate grains, scarce Navifusa sp., scolecodont, algae and fungal hyphae). Two assemblages are described based on the first appearance of taxa, Assemblage I (608.90–599.00 m) dominated by monosaccates and absence of bisaccates and spores. Assemblage II (592.0–590.80 m) also dominated by monosaccates but with the inception of spores, bisaccates and marine palynomorphs. The Assemblage I is correlated to the oldest Potonieisporites neglectus Assemblage Zone of Tiwari and Tripathi based on their similarities and the absence of species recorded in the Assemblage II which is correlated to their overlying Plicatipollenites gondwanensis Assemblage Zone. Palynoassemblages similar to the Assemblage I, radiometrically constrained to the Late Pennsylvanian across Gondwana, along with the lack of diagnostic Permian pollen grains as well as marine Eurydesma fauna and terrestrial glossopterids, tentatively support an older age at least for the lower interval of the Talchir Formation. The palynological and palynofacies studies have been undertaken on the sub-surface sediments of borehole AK-19 from Asthona area of the Wardha coalfield, India. The present investigation has revealed the existence of two distinct palynological assemblages, which have been designated as palynoassemblage - I and II respectively. The former, has shown a predominance of monosaccates viz., Parasaccites, Plicatipollenites, Potonieisporites, and Crucisaccites, whereas, the latter is characterized by the dominance of striate bisaccates such as Faunipollenites and subdominance of non-striate bisaccate Scheuringipollenites along with other striate forms such as Striatopodocarpites, Crescentipollenites, and Rhizomaspora. The other genera recorded mainly includes Parasaccites, Indotriradites, and Callumispora, which suggests that primarily herbaceous and the arborescent plants where luxuriantly growing in the forest with the prevalence of hygrophilous and mesophilous environmental conditions. The recovered palynoassemblages are governed mainly by the gymnosperms such as glossopterids, conifers, and cordaites, etc., flourished in near shore areas in riverine, lacustrine conditions as well as in large swamps and marshy habitat with the prevalence of initially cold climatic conditions (Palynoassemblage-I) which later on became temperate (Palynoassemblage-II).The present palynoassemblages have a closer affiliation with the known early Permian palynofloras of other Gondwana basins of India such as Umrer and Kamthi coalfields and Godavari, Damodar, Son-Mahanadi and Satpura basins. It can also be tentatively correlated with the early Permian palynoassemblages ofo South America, Antarctica, Australia, Africa and Salt range of Pakistan. Hence, Artinskian and Kungurian age (early Permian) has been assigned to the studied palynoassemblages respectively.The study of organic matter has revealed three distinct palynofacies (I-III) which are characterized by the dominance of palynomorphs (Palynofacies-I), phytoclasts (Palynofacies-II) and biodegraded organic matter (Palynofacies-III) respectively. Palynofacies-I-III reflects the proximal fresh water settings; oxidizing fluvio-deltaic near shore conditions and distal dysoxic waterlogged settings respectively. Palynological and petrological studies have been undertaken on the Gondwana coal and associated lithologies encountered in borehole EBM-2 of East Bokaro coalfield of Damodar Basin, India. The palynological investigation resulted in the recognition of Assemblage-III ( Densipollenites, 27.9 m-214.30 m), Assemblage-II ( Striatopodocarpites + Faunipollenites, 225.00 m-297.60 m) and Assemblage-I ( Faunipollenites + Scheuringipollenites, 307.00m-433.00 m). Lithofacies study was also done for better understanding of the preservation and abundance/paucity of the spores and pollen in different lithologies as the current borehole has significant thickness of mudstones, shales and siltstone. Palynofacies study and Petrographical studies of coal samples encountered in the borehole were used to determine the depositional environment of the coal precursor peat swamp. Palynological data has revealed the presence of younger Raniganj palynoflora between 27.00-214.30 m depth that is lithologically defined as Barren Measures Formation. This spore pollen study has proved that these sediments were deposited during late early Permian to late Permian period. Further the maceral analysis of organic sediments as well as the Thermal Alteration Index (TAI) has revealed that the coaly shale at 336.5 m depth has hydrocarbon generation potential. The present work deals with the palaeoenvironment and depositional setting of the subsurface sediments from bore hole RT-4 of Tamra block from Raniganj coalfield of Damodar Basin, India. Nineteen shale samples were subjected to palynological and coal petrographical analyses. On the basis of botanical affinity between the miospores and the parent plants as well as the different plant groups, each coal plant assemblage was determined. The dominance of bisaccates such as Scheuringipollenites, Faunipollenites (= Protohaploxypinus), Striatopodocarpites and presence of monosaccates such as Densipollenites, Parasaccites reflect a peat forming community composed mainly of gymnosperms. Subordinate trilete spores derived from filicopsids ( Cyclogranisporites, Horriditriletes, Brevitirletes, Callumispora, Microbaculsispora, Microfoveolatispora, Cyclobaculisporites), lycopsids ( Indotriradites, Gondispoirtes and Didecitriletes) and sphenopsids ( Laevigatosporites ) are less abundant occurring in variable proportions reflecting a hypautocthonous taphocenose. Presence of Botryococccus algae has been recorded. Petrographic analysis of the coals from bore core EBM-1 of East Bokaro Coalfield revealed characteristic changes as a result of thermal alteration by an intrusive body. The enhancement of 'rank' (increase in the VR% values) is observed in the heat affected coal in the lower part of the bore core. The vitrinite in the coal at a depth of 984.95 m showed devolatilization vacuoles and initiation of mosaic structure due to heat alteration, dessication cracks and micropores. Meta-liptinite having reflectance value higher (1.67%) than that of the host vitrinite (1.09% - 1.36%) was also recorded. Bi-reflectance values of the un-altered coals were normal in the range of 0.06% - 0.09% where as the altered coal at a depth of 984.95 m showed an abnormal increase in the values (0.23%). Presence of secondary injected mineral matter and char particles further indicate the effect of thermal alteration. Palynological investigation of both altered and un-altered coal reveals that the palynomorphs recovered from the altered coal are dark and opaque due to the charring effect while the palynomorphs from un-altered coals exhibit a clear internal structure and can be easily identified. Macroscopic charcoal is recovered from the sub-surface sediments from Bore core SKB-1 which intersected Barren Measure Formation and Raniganj Formation of South Karanpura coalfield. These charcoal particles are widely accepted to be of palaeowildfire products and this study contributes to the Middle and Late Permian wildfire data of Indian peninsula. In the present investigation the charcoal particles are studied using reflected light, transmitted light and Scanning Electron microscopy to document their anatomical structure, morphology and temperature of formation. The inertinite reflectance data reveal that these charcoals were formed at a temperature of 600° C which is evident by the homogenized cell walls as homogenization takes place at temperatures above 500° C. Petrographic analysis reveals high inertinite content and the calculated Gelification Index and Tissue preservation Index suggest that the sediments from which the charcoal particles were retrieved were deposited in a dry forest swamp which was conducive for the forest fire to propagate as the forest litter provided the fuel load. Palynological investigations are carried out on approximately 538.00-m thick Gondwana strata from borehole SKB-1, Binja Block, South Karanpura Coalfield in Jharkhand. Based on the distribution pattern of age marker palynotaxa, two distinct palynoassemblages are identified. Palynoassemblage-I in the lithologically designated Barren Measures and Barakar formations, between 552.00 and 53.20 m depth show dominance of striate bisaccate ( Striatopodocarpites, Crescentipollenites, and Faunipollenites) and abundance of nonstriate bisaccate ( Scheuringipollenites). Upward the Palynoassemblage-II (39.50-13.80 m depth) is rich in striate bisaccate ( Striatopodocarpites and Crescentipollenites) and significant enveloping monosaccate Densipollenites magnicorpus pollen. These strata have been equated with Raniganj Formation of Latest Permian age. The First Appearance Datum (FAD) of Arcuatipollenites pellucidus, Playfordiaspora cancellosa, Alisporites sp., Falcisporites sp. and Krempipollenites indicus observed at 13.80 and 39.50 m depth, mark the transition of Permian into the Lower Triassic. The FADs of Guttulapollenites spp. at 49.10 and 504.70 m, Goubinispora morondavensis at 415.90 m, Alisporites ovalis and Arcuatipollenites sp. at 526.70 m is observed and suggest that these sediments are equivalent to Raniganj Formation, Late Permian in age. Palynofloras have been recorded from the Barakar Formation in the Borehole MBKW-3, Barpali-Karmitikra Block, Mand-Raigarh Coalfield, Chhattisgarh. Three distinct palynoassemblages have been identified and referred to the following palynoassemblage zones - Gondisporites raniganjensis (Latest Permian); Faunipollenites varius (latest Early Permian), and Scheuringipollenites barakarensis (late Early Permian). It is inferred that these deposits contain the representative palynoassamblages of Early to Late Permian in age. The First Appearance Datum (FAD)s of Arcuatipollenites pellucidus, A. ovatus, Guttulapollenites hannonicus, Lundbladispora microconata, Alisporites opii, Klausipollenites sp., and Goubinispora indica (at 41.95, 45.90, 98.35 m depth), indicate the closing phase of Permian, as these elements are the key species that mark a transition from Permian to the Lower Triassic. A palynological analysis of borehole RB-1, Raniganj Coalfield, Damodar Basin, has been presented here. Based on the quantitative analysis of the spores and pollen grains of the productive samples, three palynoassemblages have been identified: Palynoassemblage-I demarcated at a depth between 335.00 and 284.00 m is distinguished by the dominance of nonstriate bisaccate pollen Scheuringipollenites and subdominance of striate bisaccate pollen Faunipollenites suggestive of an early Permian (Artinskian) age; Palynoassemblage-II identified at a depth between 278.00 and 32.00 m shows the prominence of striate bisaccate mainly Faunipollenites, Striatopodocarpites and subdominance of Scheuringipollenites signifies late early Permian (Kungurian) age, and the youngest Palynoassemblage-III marked at a depth between 30.00 and 03.00 m contains dominance of striate disaccates pollen, viz., Striatopodocarpites, Crescentipollenites, and monosaccate pollen Densipollenites spp. (D. invisus, D. densus, D. magnicorpus) corroborate with the latest Permian Raniganj (Lopingian) age. The rare occurrence of Densoisporites contactus and Lundbladispora warti in the assemblage, define the upper limit of the Raniganj Formation. The assemblages have been correlated with the Indian as well as other Gondwanian continents. The dominance of gymnosperms pollen glossopteridales, conifers, and cordaites, lesser quantitative spores of lycopsids, sphenopsids, filiciopsids algal elements indicate that the palaeoclimatic condition was warm and high humid, during the deposition of these sediments in the study area of the Raniganj Coalfield. Research Highlights: Palynological study has been carried out for the subsurface coal deposits from the borehole RB-1, drilled at Raniganj Coalfield to attempt to establish chronology of the sediments. The palynological investigation reveals three palynoassemblage zones and dated as early to latest Permian (Artinskian to Lopingian) age and this assemblage reveals the dominance of gymnosperms plant group such as Glossopteridales followed by conifers and cordaitales. The Gondwana sediments comprising fine-grained shales, carbonaceous shales, sandstones and the coal horizon in borecore RT-4 (approximately 547.00m thick) from Tamra block, Raniganj Coalfield, Damodar Basin, are analyzed palynologically. Based on the distribution pattern of marker palynotaxa, two assemblage zones are identified. In the Barren Measures Formation, dominance of enveloping monosaccate ( Densipollenites) along with striate bisaccate ( Striatopodocarpites, Faunipollenites) pollen taxa, and the FAD's of Kamthisaccites and Arcuatipollenites observed at 30.75, have equated this strata (30.75-227.80 m thick) with the Raniganj Formation of Late Permian in age. Downwards in the Barakar Formation, between 423.80-577.70 m depths, an abundance of non-striate ( Scheuringipollenites) and striate ( Faunipollenites and Striatopodocarpites) bisaccate pollen taxa is observed, that dates late Early Permian in age. Fair occurrences of hyaline, distorted and blackish-brown plant matter is observed within 231.00-408.40 m depths. Present study infers the existence of the Raniganj Formation in the lithologically delimited Barren Measures Formation in the study area, and the underlying unproductive strata (approx. 177.40m) might represent the part of the Barren Measures Formation. A rich Glossopteris dominated plant fossils assemblage is recovered from the Barakar Formation of Lalmatia coal mine, Hura coalfield of Rajmahal Basin, Godda district, Jharkhand, India. The assemblage includes Glossopteris, Gangamopteris and Noeggerathiopsis (leaf forms) along with Vertebraria (root form). There are 4 genera and 14 species of megafossils in the collection, which includes 10 species of Glossopteris, two species of Gangamopteris and one species of Noeggerathiopsis and Vertebraria each. The flora, although similar to that of the Barakar Formation of the Damodar Basin complex, exhibit unique characteristics and is of Artinskian to Kungurian in age. The palynoassemblage recovered in the section reveals the dominance of genus Scheuringipollenites and sub-dominance of Faunipollenites (=Protohaploxypinus) along with Parasaccites, Potonieisporites, Barakarites, Plicatipollenites, Striomonosaccites, Striatopodocarpites, Crescentipollenites, Verticipollenites, Rhizomaspora, Distriatites, Primuspollenites, Striasulcites, Lunatisporites, Guttulapollenites, Platysaccus, Microfoveolatispora, Microbaculispora, Horriditriletes, Tiwariasporis and Weylandites, which demonstrates an early Permian age (Artinskian). The palynoassemblage indicates that the sediments belong to the lower part of the Barakar Formation. Biomarker analysis suggests varying organic matter input during the deposition of the studied sequence. Diterpane compounds and megafossil evidences suggest Glossopteris were the dominant flora along with conifers. Bacterial alteration of the organic matter is inferred from the hopane compounds. The δ13C value of organic matter associated with the carbonaceous shale directly corroborates with the typical δ13C values of the Permian time and is suggestive of warm and humid climatic conditions. A large number of naked, fossil spore tetrads assignable to the dispersed microspore genera Indotriradites, Microbaculispora and Microfoveolatispora are reported for the first time from an early Permian stratum (Lower Barakar Formation) of Singrauli Coalfield, Son-Mahanadi Basin, Central India. This is also the first record of tetrads from any Artinskian strata in the world. There is no evidence of any kind of sporangia or related plant parts in the present investigation that could ascertain the affinity of these tetrads; however, the presence of a trilete mark in the spores of the tetrads demonstrates their alliance at least with the pteridophyte group. The present study suggests possible factors affecting the sporogenesis process in the past, considering other available global records pertaining to fossil spore tetrads. The results of significant physiological and biochemical analyses performed on the anthers of modern plants related to reproductive biology, in order to understand the conditions and changes responsible for the formation of tetrads, are also considered. We analysed the globally occurring fossil tetrads and the palaeoclimates prevailing during their deposition. A correlation between extreme climatic conditions, specific pH values inside microsporangium and the formation of tetrad is envisaged. It is deduced that extreme climatic conditions (extreme cold/extreme hot) might have triggered some sort of malfunctioning in the sporogenesis process that altered the specific pH values inside the microsporangium. Any restraint of the activity of the callase enzyme, responsible for dissolution of callose walls laid between the individual spores, may therefore have apprehended the dissociation of tetrads into individual spores. The present work elucidates miofloral records from the Ganmachidam Formation (late Carboniferous–earliest Permian) of Spiti Valley, Tethyan Himalaya. The Ganmachidam Formation was hitherto considered as unfossiliferous, both for the faunal as well as floral records, and has been subjected to contentious age assessment. The present study has been carried out to find out the microfloral remains, assess the palynostratigraphic status, and the age of the Ganmachidam Formation. From the splintery shale sequence, a rich assemblage of palynomorphs has been recovered, having a dominance of monosaccate pollen grains, namely Parasaccites (Cannanoropollis), Crucisaccites, Divarisaccus, Densipollenites, Maculatasporites, followed by diverse bisaccate pollen grains, namely Scheuringipollenites, Crescentipollenites, Faunipollenites (Protohaploxypinus), Lunatisporites, Striatopodocarpites, Striatites, Rhizomaspora, Primuspollenites, and the spores Callumispora (Punctatisporites) and Calamospora in addition to woody fragments and fungal spores. Three palynoassemblages are identified. The recovered palynocomposition is corroborated with known records of palynomorphs from the Tethyan realm of India and from the late Carboniferous–Early Permian records of contemporaneous sequences across the globe. The composition of these palynoassemblages shows close correlation with the Crucisaccites monoletus Zone and Vittatina costabilis Interval Zone in the northeastern area of the Paraná Basin, Brazil, and lower Barakar palynozone (Scheuringipollenites barakarensis Assemblage Zone) of Peninsular India which indicates the studied section of the Ganmachidam Formation is late Pennsylvanian to early Permian in age. Moreover, occurrences of palynomorphs from the Carboniferous sequences having a glossopterid affinity further strengthen the idea that glossopterids might have originated in Carboniferous time. The palynostratigraphic data given here are based on the explored borecores (TRBD-2, TRBD-3 and TROD-1), by Geological Survey of India. The Permian strata worked-out is about 1174.00 m thick and comprises from base to top - Talchir, Barakar and Barren Measures formations. The palynological content enables delimitation of five palynological assemblages. (i) Scheuringipollenites barakarensis, (ii) Faunipollenites varius, (iii) Gondisporites raniganjensis, (iv) Densipollenites magnicorpus, and (v) Krempipollenites indicus in ascending order from the subsuface rock strata. The lithologically identified strata Talchir Formation in borecores TRBD-2 and TRBD-3 is palynologically dated late Early Permian in having the Scheuringipollenites barakarensis and the Faunipollenites varius palynozones. Subsequently, the part of Barakar strata in these borecores corroborates with Barakar Formation. In borecore TRBD-3, the Barren Measures rocks do not match with the palynological dates, and are affiliated with the palynoflora of the Raniganj Formation. In TROD-1, the strata identified as Barakar Formation is dated Late Permian in having Gondisporites ranigangensis Palynozone; while that of Barren Measures Formation is palynologically dated Early Triassic having Krempipollenites indicus Palynozone. The palynology has helped in the precise dating of the Lower Gondwana succession of Odari and Bartikhurd blocks in Tatapani-Ramkola Coalfield of South Rewa Gondwana Basin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Permian-Triassic (P/T) mass extinction qualifies as the severest biotic perturbation in the history of our planet. Biomarkers, stable isotopes and palynomorphs are excellent proxies offering glimpses into palaeobiota and past ecosystems. These were investigated from coal-bearing upper Permian (Raniganj Formation) and Lower Triassic (Panchet Formation) Gondwana sediments recovered from the Raniganj Sub-basin, eastern India. The geochemical and palaeobotanical data suggest a shift in the terrestrial vegetation during the Early Triassic. A distinct change occurs from high abundance of n -C 23 and n -C 25 alkanes and higher CPI values in the upper Permian sediments to predominantly n -C 27 and n -C 29 alkanes along with relatively lower CPI values in the Lower Triassic. A sharp decline of the diterpenoid compounds and Glossopteridales pollens with a concomitant rise in lycopsid spores in the Lower Triassic sediments reflects the waning of a gymnosperm-dominated mire and onset of a stressed environment. Unlike the Glossopteridales, the Coniferales appear to be a resilient floral group with several new genera adapting to the growing arid conditions in the Early Triassic. The microbial community also responded to the contemporaneous ecosystem shift, with higher concentration of C 27 sterane relative to C 29 sterane in Lower Triassic sediments indicating proliferation of algal phytoplankton. The decreasing moretane/hopane (M/H) suggests that the soil bacteria were adversely affected plausibly due to enhanced soil erosion at the early part of the Triassic. A marked shift in the bulk isotopic composition (δ13C org) from higher values in the upper Permian sediments (˗21.0 to ˗24.1‰) to lower values in the Lower Triassic sediments (˗21.2 to ˗32.5‰) is diagnostic of a vegetation changeover as a result of environmental deterioration. The late Cretaceous Corsinipollenites from central India and its nearest living fossil pollen Ludwigia from Pleistocene Karewa sediments in Kashmir shows morphometrical affinities with pollen of seven extant Ludwigia species (L. octovalvis (Jacq) P.H. Raven , L. octovalvis subsp. sessiliflora (M.Micheli) Raven , L. adscendens (L.) H. Hara , L. perennis (L.), L. hyssopifolia (G.Don) Exell , L. peruviana (L.) H. Hara and L. decurrens Walt.) commonly growing in swampy ecosystems of India. The Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) and Light Microscope (LM) study draws plausible lineage of extant Ludwigia species with that of fossil specimens recovered at two different time frames based on similarities in pollen morphometry. The pollen aperture and its character along with the sexine pattern were main identifiable features to distinguish different species of extant/fossil Ludwigia pollen. The aspidote aperture varies from brevi-colporate to slit-like colpi (colporate). The sexine is stenopalynous type characterized by rugulate to reti-rugulate pattern. The multivariate principal component analysis (PCA) was applied on the numerical data obtained from pollen morphometry of living and fossil Ludwigia spp. The Pleistocene Ludwigia morphotype with slit-like colpi shows close proximity to L. octovalvis, L. octovalvis subsp. sessiliflora and L. adscendens. However, Late Cretaceous, Corsinipollenitis characterized by brevicolpi is closer to L. perennis and L. hyssopifolia with respect to primary pollen characters and inferred as primitive species having lineage to the "Old World" (paleotropical) species. Background: Gender-related norms and poverty remain important structural barriers to secondary school attendance among adolescent girls in southern India. We analyse how gender norms interact with family deprivation and dynamics to result in girls dropping out of school; we identify the main facilitators of school retention and changes to gender socialisation. Methods: Longitudinal qualitative case studies with 36 girls were nested within a cluster randomized trial to evaluate the Samata intervention targeting adolescent girls in Bagalkote and Vijayapura districts in northern Karnataka. We used two rounds of in-depth interviews, conducted in 2014 at a time when respondents were in 8th standard at the age of 13 to 14 and sixteen months later. We combined thematic and narrative analyses. Results: Our study found that poverty and socioeconomic realities at the household level strongly affect conformity with discriminatory gender practices such as restricting girls’ mobility. The value placed on education by parents clearly differentiates the regular school goers from those frequently absent and others who dropped out. With active encouragement of the girls’ educational and career aspirations, parents engendered the girl’s agency to communicate openly both at home and at school, allowing subtle changes to gender performance while resisting the pressure of social sanctions. In contrast, where educational aspirations were weak, parents invested more intensely in enforcing correct performance of gender, prioritising her well-being by aiming to secure her future in a good marriage. Among poorer families, girls’ domestic duties came at the cost of schooling with concerns about protecting her sexual purity predominating. Conclusions: In contexts where a strong gender ideology of virginity before marriage rules, subtle shifts in harmful gender practices are possible. Secondary education among lower caste adolescent girls living in rural Karnataka, South India, is characterized by high rates of school drop-out and absenteeism. A cross-sectional baseline survey (N=2275) was conducted in 2014 as part of a cluster-randomized control trial among adolescent girls (13-14 year) and their families from marginalized communities in two districts of north Karnataka. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used. Overall, 8.7% girls reported secondary school dropout and 8.1% reported frequent absenteeism (past month). In adjusted analyses, economic factors (household poverty; girls' work-related migration), social norms and practices (child marriage; value of girls' education), and school-related factors (poor learning environment and bullying/harassment at school) were associated with an increased odds of school dropout and absenteeism. Interventions aiming to increase secondary school retention among marginalized girls may require a multi-level approach, with synergistic components that address social, structural and economic determinants of school absenteeism and dropout. We report studies of petrography, palynofacies, charcoal and adpressed plant fossils for the coal-bearing Jagannath section in the Talcher Coalfield, Mahanadi Basin, India, to improve understanding of the age, palaeoecology and depositional setting of this palaeo-mire. Palynology is indicative of the Scheuringipollenites barakarensis assemblage, suggesting an Early Permian (Artinskian) age for the studied section. The age of the studied section is inferred based on correlation with coeval assemblages across Gondwana. Palynoassemblages have more similarity with those of Africa than South America. Petrographic indices suggest that peat-forming vegetation accumulated mainly in telmatic settings under ombrotrophic-mesotrophic (intermittent fluctuating) hydrological conditions. Palynofacies suggest that the deposition of organic matter (by high energy fluvio-deltaic agents) took place in an oxic to occasionally dysoxic setting. Megaflora comprise a low diversity assemblage dominated by Equisetales (Schizoneura and Paracalamites), with less common Glossopteridales (Glossopteris , Gangamopteris) and Filicales (Dichotomopteris) indicative of dense arborescent vegetation. Numerous fossil macrocharcoal fragments indicate the repeated occurrence of wildfires in the catchment area. The high abundance of pyrogenic inertinites in Permian coals of Gondwana may indicate a high-fire phase of Earth history linked to elevated atmosphere oxygen level, and our current study further substantiates this idea demonstrating the occurrence of fire, not only in seasonally dry ecosystems but also in peat forming ecosystems under humid conditions. Background: Research has increasingly documented the important role that violence by clients and the police play in exacerbating HIV vulnerability for women in sex work. However few studies have examined violence in the intimate relationships of women in sex work, or drawn on community partnerships to explore the social dynamics involved. A community-based participatory research study was undertaken by community and academic partners leading intimate partner violence (IPV) and HIV prevention programs in Bagalkot district, Karnataka state, India. The purpose was to explore the experience and understandings of intimate partner violence and HIV/AIDS among women in sex work and their intimate partners in Bagalkot that would inform both theory and practice.Methods: A community-based, interpretive qualitative methodology was used. Data was collected between July and October 2014 through in-depth interviews with 38 participants, including 10 couples, 13 individual female sex workers, and 5 individual male intimate partners. Purposive sampling was done to maximize variation on socio-demographic characteristics. Thematic content analysis was conducted through coding and categorization for each interview question in NVivo 10.0, followed by collaborative analysis to answer the research questions.Results: The results showed that an array of interrelated, multi-level factors underlay the widespread acceptance and perpetuation of violence and lack of condom use in participants' intimate relationships. These included individual expectations that justified violence and reflected societal gender norms, compounded by stigma, legal and economic constraints relating to sex work. The results demonstrate that structural vulnerability to IPV and HIV must be addressed not only on the individual and relationship levels to resolve relevant triggers of violence and lack of condom use, but also the societal-level to address gender norms and socio-economic constraints among women in sex work and their partners.Conclusion: The study contributes to a better understanding on the interplay of individual agency and structural forces at a time when researchers and program planners are increasingly pondering how best to address complex and intersecting social and health issues. Ongoing research should assess the generalizability of the results and the effectiveness of structural interventions aiming to reduce IPV and HIV vulnerability in other contexts.
