10. Principal component and stepwise discriminant analysis of the morphometric traits of three dual-purpose breeds of chicken

Abstract

Using the principal component procedure of SAS, 10 variables; body weight (BW), body length (BL), breast girth (BG), shank length (SL), thigh length (TL), comb length (CL), comb height (CH), wing length (WL), wattle length (WAL) and wattle thickness (WT) obtained from three dual-purpose chicken breeds (Shika, Kuroiler, and Sasso), variables were separated. Similarly, stepwise discriminant analsis procedure of the SAS software was employed to evaluate variables that contribute to the overall differences in breeds. Results showed three principal components (PC1, PC2 and PC3) were extracted for all the breeds and pooled data. 45.60% of total variance was accounted for by PC1, 28.17% by PC2 and 16.22% by PC3. The principal components partitioning of total variance were 50.80, 15.10 and 9.70%, 50.82, 19.90 and 14.90%, and 48.63, 14.00 and 12.67% for Shika, Kuroiler, and Sasso breeds respectively, with different factor loadings. Communalities ranged from 0.43-0.97, 0.45-0.83, 0.45-0.88 and 0.45-0.90, indicating that a good amount of variance was accounted for. 11. Delineation of built-up areas liable to flood in Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria using remote sensing and geographic information system technologies

Abstract

This study used the techniques of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) to identify the built up areas within Jimeta/Yola town that are liable to flood. Ikonos image and a topographic map covering the study area were used. Built up area was extracted from the image while an elevation model was created from the topographical map. The built up area was overlaid on the elevation model. Those within the flood plain are liable to flood while those outside the floodplain are not liable to flood. The result shows that Jambutu area in Jimeta has the highest risk of flooding; the flooded area covers 12.296 hectares. In Yola, most portion of Damare area is a flood vulnerable area. 12. Analysis of land use/land cover of Girei, Yola North and South Local Government Areas of Adamawa State, Nigeria using satellite imagery

Abstract

This research demonstrated the use of satellite imagery in detecting changes in land use/ land cover on the fringes of urban areas. Satellite data of the same geographical area, recorded over a decade, were used to identify changes in the pattern of land use/land cover. The study used multi date satellite imageries namely, Landsat MSS 1978 and SPOT5 2007. The images were separately classified and then compared using ILWIS 3.3 and Erdas Imagine 9.3 Versions. The land use/land cover statistics results obtained from the two classifications process showed that built-up areas, sand, water bodies, and open/barren land were found to have been increasing at alarming rate while agricultural land and scrubs were encroached upon by other land use/land cover types. The study showed that land use/land cover change was better captured and monitored through the use of satellite imagery that served as a means of efficiently updating digital databases as shown in the research.Keywords: Remote sensing, GIS, Urban-rural interaction, Planning, Land use, Satellite imagery, Change detection

14. Effect of Genotype and Age on Some Morphometric, Body Linear Measurements and Semen Traits in Nigerian Indigenous Chickens

Abstract

A population of 231 roosters of the Nigerian indigenous chickens of normal feathered frizzle feathered and naked neck genotypes was evaluated for the effect of genotype and age on some morphometric body linear measurements and semen characteristics of three Nigerian chicken genotypes. 20 roosters from each genotype were evaluated for semen characteristics at 24, 28 and 32 weeks of age in relation to body weights and linear body measurements at those ages. Data were obtained and analyzed for body weights, body linear measurements and for the semen characteristics. The analyzed data showed that all the body parameters were significantly (P0.05) affected at 24 and 28 weeks respectively with superiority in most of the trait in the normal feathered genotype. Correlation estimates showed most traits not significantly (P>0.05) correlated. It is concluded that some level of genetic variations exist in body weight, linear measurements and semen traits in roosters of three genotypes used in this study and they can be used for breeding and artificial insemination purposes for genetic improvement.Key words: Age, genotypes, indigenous chickens

15. An efficient framework to sustainable management of refuse collection and evacuation in a developing city

Abstract

The study developed a framework for sustainable management of refuse collection and evacuation in Bauchi city through spatial modeling. Coordinates of dump sites and sample households from the study area were obtained by Global Positioning System (GPS) while road network was obtained by digitizing satellite image of the area and both were used in this research. Thus, digital map of dump sites, sampled households and roads about the area were produced. Using the “Network Analyst Tool (NAT)” of ArcGIS 10.2 functionalities for service areas, closest facilities and best routes, a model was then developed to encourage efficient and sustainable refuse collection and evacuation in the area. The model developed has 22 dump sites, 15 closest facilities and 3 trucks routes. The service areas around each dump site are in three buffer zones covering distances of 200m, 350m and 500m respectively while the longest and shortest distances of 1499.46m and 156m in the closest facilities for the households were confirmed. Also, three trucks with truck3 having the longest distance was discovered while truck1 has the least distance for refuse evacuation in the area. These were discovered based on service areas, closest facility and best routes and hence the model will improve the general situation of refuse disposal in the area. Moreover, it will specifically ensure efficiency and sustainability in the management of refuse collection and evacuation of the area. Therefore, spatial modeling through NAT looks more appropriate as panacea for inefficient and unsustainable management of refuse collection and evacuation of a developing Bauchi metropolis. Thus, the model is recommended to be used as an efficient framework for sustainable management of refuse collection and evacuation in similar developing cities.Keywords: Closest facilities, modeling, network analyst, route optimization, service areas

21. Cardiac hydatid cyst in a child

Abstract

Hydatid disease is a condition caused by the cysts, or sac-like structures, of the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus. The echinococcus cyst grows very slowly, taking years to develop, and hydatid disease is thus rarely detected in children. One study showed that only 11.7 percent of patients with this infestation were less than 10 years old. Hydatid disease involving the heart is uncommon at any age and was shown to be responsible for less than 2 percent of all cases of hydatid disease. Complications of cardiac hydatid cyst include disturbances in the conduction of impulses within the heart; blockage of the heart valves; rupture of the cyst into the ventricular cavity or pericardium, the membrane sac surrounding the heart; accumulation of fluid in the pericardium; increased blood pressure within the lung; and formation of blood clots in the circulation. Hydatid disease occurs frequently in the Middle East. One study showed that hydatid disease was responsible for just under 1 percent of all admissions to a hospital in eastern Libya. A case is described of an 11-year-old Libyan girl with a cardiac hydatid cyst in the posterior wall of the left heart ventricle. The cyst was diagnosed by echocardiography, a diagnostic method in which sound waves are used to visualize internal heart structures, and by blood tests. The patient was treated with the drug mebendazole for three months, but this therapy was only partially effective in decreasing the size of the cyst. 25. Development of automated land information management system (a case study of Bajabure Housing Estate, Yola, Adamawa state).

Abstract

This paper focuses on the creation of a database management system through which information on a particular parcel of land in the study area can readily and easily be accessed. Most of our public agencies responsible for managing the environment (Town Planning Authority, Ministries of land and Survey, and environment.) have very limited data about the environment, where such data are available they are scanty and kept in paper files which age with time. An existing map of the area produced from the conventional ground survey method was used as the base map. Data collection was carried out using field techniques –taking inventories of the developed and undeveloped parcels, the state of the parcels (plots or buildings) and their present uses. Information on land ownership, and method of acquisition were obtained from the Urban Planning Department in Yola. The map used was obtained from the Ministry of Land and Survey, Yola-Adamawa State. This was scanned, digitized and Imported into the Arch view GIS (version 3.2) software package for manipulation. A database was created with the attributes linked to the spatial data using the text tool. An attempt was made to compare the digital database created with the analogue system of data storage. It revealed that any parcel of land can easily and readily be queried. The potential of the database was also tested by querying the data for some randomly selected parcels. recommendation and suggestion on further research in this area of study include the establishment of a well equipped spatial information unit, checking activities of land speculators through monitoring, addressing “in field:” syndromethat is, allocation of space provided for adequate ventilation in between adjacent plots, etc. Tracing the history of any disputed plot from the initial allocation was suggested as a means of establishing true ownership of parcel (s}.

38. Scheduling Nurses Using Goal-Programming Techniques

Abstract

This paper presents a single-phase goal programming algorithm for scheduling nurses in one unit of the hospital. The goals represent the scheduling policies of the hospital and nurses' preferences for weekends on and off. An application to one unit of the hospital with 11 nurses resulted in satisfactory schedules. The computer time to solve the problem using a goal programming algorithm was very reasonable. 39. The effect of improving maternity services in a secondary facility, Zaria, Nigeria

Abstract

Preliminary studies:Facility review at the secondary hospital in Makarfi revealed a lack of drugs and skilled personnel and delays in treating and referring women with obstetric complications. Interventions:In 1994, maternity facilities were renovated, a revolving drug fund was introduced, midwives were trained and an ambulance was restored to service. Attempts to secure a physician with skills in treating obstetric emergencies were unsuccessful. Prior to these activities, obstetric services at the referral hospital were improved. Community interventions focused on improving utilization by women with complications. Results:Between 1990 and 1995, substantial increases occurred in antenatal attendance (2517 to 5565 per year) and deliveries (325 to 1952 per year). The number of women with complications seeking care at this facility, however, dropped from 85 in 1990 to 28 in 1995. Referrals to higher level facilities increased from four in 1990 to 17 in 1995. Costs:The cost of the interventions was approximately US $32 000. Ninety-eight percent was paid by the government and 2% by PMM. Conclusions:Improving the quality of maternity services can increase utilization by women with uncomplicated pregnancies. However, utilization of emergency services appears to be influenced by other factors, such as the ability to treat obstetric complications and prevailing economic conditions.© 1997 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics
