Background: The described dataset contains occurrence records of invertebrate specimens deposited at the State Museum of Natural History of the NAS of Ukraine, Lviv, Ukraine (SMNH NASU). It combines diverse taxonomic groups, mostly belonging to the class Insecta of the phylum Arthropoda, that were selected as prioritised for digitisation in war conditions. Selected specimens were ascertained as those being the most vulnerable to hostilities and requiring virtual preservation. Such virtual preservation is essential in the war realities as collection can be lost or damaged at any moment, resulting in a significant retrospective biodiversity data gap. At the same time, collection virtualisation and its deposition on the internet grant remote access to scientists who cannot visit it in person due to the war. Moreover, we believe that the mobilisation of the data from the Ukrainian collections and their publication online are essential for the integration of Ukrainian research facilities into a global scientific biodiversity pool. New information: A total of 3,660 occurrence records mobilised in 2023-2024 from the collection of invertebrates of the SMNH NASU, were published. The order Isopoda Latreille, 1816 consists of species occurring in terrestrial, marine and freshwater environments. In the Southern Ocean (SO), this group is amongst the most speciose and occur at all depths. Isopoda biogeography, despite being studied since the first Antarctic expeditions, is still poorly known from a geographical point of view and shows large occurrence gaps for some groups in specific sectors of the SO. In this paper, we update the isopod checklists of the Ross Sea (RS) and of some peri-Antarctic areas, such as the South Orkney Islands (SOI) and the South Sandwich Islands (SSI), based on the study of museum vouchers curated by the Italian National Antarctic Museum (MNA, Section of Genoa).A total of 279 MNA samples from 15 different expeditions were studied. From this material, consisting of 419 specimens, 41 accepted species distributed in 24 families and 51 genera were identified. Comparing this newly-obtained information with the GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) and OBIS (Ocean Biodiversity Information System) portal, 15 species are here reported for the first time in the Ross Sea, with five new records in the Ross Sea Marine Protected Area. All records are new for the Terra Nova Bay area, for which a checklist of this group has never been produced before.

The article examines the carved support beams from the apartments of representatives of the families of the Cossack elders and the Orthodox clergy of the Hetmanate from the last quarter of the 17th till the end of 18th centuries. The creation of multi-ornamented support beams was a kind of confirmation of the social status of the owners of the houses and their artistic preferences, and an expression of the skill level of the master carvers of that time. The aim of the study is to analyze all the support beams of representatives of the Cossack elders and clergy of the 17th and 18th centuries known today and to achieve general undertanding regarding the specifics of these monuments of the material culture of the Hetmanate. For the first time in historiography, on the basis of information about the support beams preserved in museum collections and highlighted in scientific publications, a comprehensive general analysis of these monuments as a phenomenon of material culture was carried out. As a result of the analysis of information about 22 carved support beams of the 17th-18th centuries from the territory of the Hetmanate, it was concluded that the common features of these monuments are the presence (with some exceptions) of straight Orthodox crosses and inscriptions in the Church Slavonic language in the centers of the artefacts. In the ornamentation of the support beams, features characteristic of the late baroque and classicism can be traced. At the same time, both simpler and more richly decorated artefacts exist. The second group includes support beams from the houses of individual representatives of the Cossack elders. Each support beam was a visual manifestation of the owner's wealth and social status, and of their artistic preferences against the background of generally accepted cultural canons. At the same time, carved support beams are examples of the skill of Ukrainian master carvers of the early modern era, which need to be preserved for future generations. In general, the images on these products are permeated with Christian symbolism, although they also contain some symbols that occur in pagan sign systems.

Research on the ecology and conservation of Lepidoptera (and other species) has historically neglected tropical diversity – but the Lepidoptera of tropical Africa have been particularly understudied. Central Africa represents a major centre of biodiversity for butterflies, moths and other taxa but major threats including habitat loss, habitat degradation/ disturbance and climate change are threatening their persistence. Additionally, a range of obstacles to research and conservation are apparent in Central Africa, including major socioeconomic disparity, persistent armed conflicts, corruption, and a lack of local resources (e.g., funding and museums). Here we outline the history of research on the butterflies of Central Africa and highlight the importance of further conservation efforts in maintaining the biodiversity of Lepidoptera and other understudied insects in the region. Proactive measures acknowledging the prevailing regional challenges must be taken immediately. Among the major recommendations, we suggest: 1) enhancing museum collections, 2) facilitating strong scientific collaboration that enhances local capacity, 3) ensuring that funded projects are not disrupted by corruption, and 4) working to advance the socioeconomic status of local communities. Potential for scientific and community advancement in the region is substantial if investment and research efforts are targeted effectively.

A museum plays a central role in conserving cultural heritage. Hence, conserving museum collections is pivotal for preserving the values of the collection. The museum of National Awakening has a potential national collection that requires curative conservation due to its damaged condition, i.e., Sultan Thaha Robes. However, the conservation effort lacked written and visual documentation of the collection due to the collection's urgency, causing it difficult for conservators to access the conservation-related information. This paper presents a critical review of conservation stages performed on Sultan Thaha Robes while suggesting a complete, systematic conservation solution based on the theoretical collaboration of textile conservation experts.

Distributional data on planktonic, benthic and sympagic copepods collected in the framework of the XXXIVth Expeditions of the Italian National Antarctic Programme (PNRA) to the Ross Sea sector from 2018–2019 are here provided. These occurrences correspond to specimens collected from the 25 μm filters used in the desalination plant of the Italian research station "Mario Zucchelli" (MZS), located in the Terra Nova Bay area (TNB; Ross Sea, Antarctica). This dataset is a contribution to the Antarctic Biodiversity Portal, the thematic Antarctic node for both the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (AntOBIS) and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility Antarctic Biodiversity Information Facility (ANTABIF). The dataset was uploaded and integrated with the SCAR-AntOBIS database (the geospatial component of SCAR-MarBIN). The opening of the intake pipe of the DU is positioned at a depth of 4 m and allowed a total of 2,116 specimens to be sampled and recognised. In addition, new occurrence records of copepod genera and species are reported in the same zone. We provide an overview of the marine copepod diversity reported for TNB. The total of 2,116 individuals corresponds to 14 genera and 15 species and is represented by 136 occurrence records in this dataset. Around 52% of the total number of species are new records for the TNB area. The publication of this data paper was funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO, contract n°FR/36/AN1/AntaBIS) in the Framework of EU-Lifewatch as a contribution to the SCAR Antarctic biodiversity portal (biodiversity.aq).

Hoverflies are among the most important insect pollinators and there is documented evidence of a recent decline in their populations. To trace the past distributions of hoverfly species, verified records of historical collections are essential.Here, we provide data on 1071 specimens of hoverflies collected or received by Jean Timon-David and hosted at the Marseille Natural History Museum, France. Most of the specimens were collected by Timon-David himself and come from south-eastern France, mainly from the Departments of Bouches-du-Rhône, Var and Hautes-Alpes. Most of these specimens were checked for the accuracy of their identification according to the latest identification keys. This resulted in 85 additions to the known fauna of the French Departments, mostly for Var and Bouches-du-Rhône. The taxonomy of all specimens was checked against the latest available checklists and updated names added whenever necessary. Specimens received from entomologists working in other continents may also be valuable, as these are historic testimonies of the fauna of their own respective regions of origin and may, therefore, also be used as reference material. One paratype specimen from Australia is present in the collection. The holotype of Cheilosia vangaveri Timon-David, 1937 is absent from the collection and should be considered as lost. All but two of the specimens with locality labels had their geographical coordinates of origin added in the dataset.

Discussions of the intersection of art museums and socio-economics have become an increasingly provocative topic both in the art and museum worlds and the fields of urban studies and cultural studies. However, there has yet to be a comprehensive theoretical framework in the twenty-first century that considers this interplay across an international field. I examine Hong Kong's M+ Museum, which is one of the cultural facilities comprising the West Kowloon Cultural District, a development conceived in the late 1990s following Hong Kong's handover to China in 1997. How has M+ manoeuvred through the twin pressures to be socio-economically promising and strategically prudent within a delicate balance between culture and politics? I argue that M+ negotiates a nuanced interplay of soft power, museum governance, collection strategy and architectural design, ultimately manifesting what I term the Bilbao Effect 2.0. Literature on the Bilbao Effect within art and museum studies considers its cultural and architectural impact and within urban studies and cultural studies, focuses on the tension between institutional identity and social constructs. However, when placed into an historical and interdisciplinary model that accounts for an art museum's quest for cultural autonomy and social, economic and political ambitions, it becomes apparent that the Bilbao Effect 2.0 is a nuanced and expanded iteration, reflecting the tug-of-war on a global stage. Body mass is an important morphological trait, which is associated with the physiology and ecology of insects. In the past, estimates of body mass were often based on general mathematical equations in which body mass was related to linear measurements of anatomical structures. For example, in female bees, estimates of dry body mass are expected to follow a non-linear relationship (power function) with the distance between the tegulae on their thorax, also known as the intertegular distance (ITD). Nonetheless, a major group of bees not included in previous studies are the Neotropical orchid bees of which mostly males are collected. We investigated whether a similar non-linear relationship is also the case for male orchid bees and we found positive evidence as the relationship can be represented by a power function providing reliable estimate of dry body mass. This is particularly important for estimating dry body mass of individuals stored in collections.

The article discusses an exhibition called "Moda Hoy! Latin American and Latinx Fashion Design Today" at the Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. The exhibition aims to showcase the diversity and complexity of Latinx and Latin American fashion design through established designers. It is organized thematically into categories such as art, sustainability, Indigenous heritage, gender, politics, popular culture, and craftsmanship. However, the article suggests that the exhibition overlooks the significance of tropicalism and the sociological aspects of Latin culture, race, class, and colonial legacies. It also raises questions about the representation of Indigenous, Black, Caribbean, and diasporic fashion designers. The article calls for ongoing efforts to diversify fashion archives and decenter fashion narratives from an antiracist perspective. [Extracted from the article]

The purpose of the article is implementation into scientific use the proposed time limits and names of creative path's periods of artist Mykola Hlushchenko (1901-1977). Based on analysis of well-known facts of his life and creativity, studies of artist's artistic heritage from 1940s-1970s artworks collection of Dnipro Art Museum. The research methodology is based on the methods of art-stylistic and comparative analysis of Mykola Hlushchenko's paintings, considered in art-historical and cultural-historical aspects. The scientific novelty of research consists in scientific 1940s- 1970s creativity periods determination of M. Hlushchenko based on research of Dnipro Art Museum collection and additional attribution of individual painting artworks according to the proposed stages. Conclusions. Based on the analysis of Mykola Hlushchenko's paintings from Dnipro Art Museum collection and study in accounting fund documentation of the institution, considering biographical and autobiographical information, socio-political and historical-cultural context, we proposed a refined periodisation of the artist's work. Division of creative stages of M. Hlushchenko for more detailed periods will allow a more thorough and deeper analysis of the well-known today artist's creative heritage. Using the example of Dnipro Art Museum collection, we concluded that a certain number of works in the museum collections of Ukraine require additional attribution. In addition, the creative heritage of outstanding Ukrainian artist Mykola Hlushchenko remains insufficiently studied and requires comprehensive research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents the results of the 'Labour Heritage Thesaurus' project which aimed at applying concepts in the area of anthropology and work history to the practice of cultural institutions. The project was realized in regard to the under-representation of labour in discussion on heritage in Poland. The analyzed initiative consisted in building a glossary for the Museum of Engineering and Technology, Krakow, in order to re-conceptualise its collections and introduce the hitherto omitted contexts. As part of the preservation of the archaeological heritage of the republic as a whole, as well as in order to ensure the preservation and further study of the cultural heritage site of federal significance "Ufa-II hillfort", the republican historical and cultural museum-reserve "Ancient Ufa" was established in 2011. The materials of the extensive archaeological research on the territory of the medieval settlement in 2006–2017 became the main source for forming the fund of the museum-reserve. The museum has become a key center for the preservation of archaeological finds, where their study, documentation, conservation and public demonstration are organized. It was museumification, as expected, that became the most acceptable for the preservation and demonstration of archaeological heritage items, while conservation and restoration of the displays, not only ensured longevity, but also raised the demonstrativeness and effectiveness of presentation at exhibitions and expositions. The question of training of own restorers remains open, so the museum is ready for cooperation with specialists in the field of preservation of archaeological heritage.

Whales are unique museum objects that have entered collections in many ways and for different reasons. This work studies three Nordic natural history museum collections in Norway and Denmark with more than 2,500 whale specimens in total, and gathers the available biological and collection data on the specimens, which include skeletal elements, foetuses and organs preserved in ethanol or formalin, and a few dry-preserved organs. It finds that influx of specimens, which were mainly locally common species that were hunted, to the collections, mainly happened in the latest 1800s and earliest 1900s, fuelled by research trends, nation building, local whaling, and colonial mechanisms. Norway was a major whaling nation, but the largest hunt for whales in the Southern Ocean in the mid-1900s is not reflected in the Norwegian museum collections, probably because of the commercial focus of the whaling industry and logistical challenges, combined with limited research interest in zoological specimens at that time. The results demonstrate that it is important to understand these processes and the resulting biases for future research, outreach, and conservation.

Although museum collections represent a temporary assemblage of “affiliated objects”, aimed at facilitating the responsible curation of the museum funds, in practice they are treated as an obligatory unit, without which the museum object itself does not exist, and they are imminently permanent. The origins, as well as the consequences of their formation may differ. The text examines several issues concerning the artificiality and temporality of collections: what are the values we observe when museum collections are formed, are these values transparent and permanent? Which attributes are con- sidered as crucial bythe curators in the classification of archaeological material and are these classifications consistent? Does chronology/periodization prevail in practice and how are the boundaries between the periods established? Is context preserved or, more precisely, is an object attributed along with the other artefacts from the same unit, which was carefully separated during excavation? What or whoinfluences the processes of formation of museum collections? The analysis is conducted on the case of the National Museum of Serbia, the oldest and the main museum institution, primarily because the archaeological objects form its basic fund ever since its establishment in 1844. Today, there are several hundred-thousand objects, organized into 16 basic collections and study material. Along with the obligatory authenticity, dating is most frequently the basic principle on which classifications are based, concerning period, origin, or typological systematization. Chronology – period/sequence – is also the main criterion of the permanent museum exhibitions, and necessary to custodians inmediating the disciplinary knowledge. Custodians “re-arrange” the past, starting from a museum object and collection, creating specific units of museum(archaeological) time – time capsules, frozen reconstructions, new realities. The museum may thus be understood as a contextdetermined by multi-temporality, or the co-existence of different times. Furthermore, working from the idea of Bennet (2009) that the museum may be identified as “the field”, it can also be interpreted as a “multi-layered site”. Various actors – object, collection, custodian, public – contribute to the accumulated character of the record. The “museum layering” is determined by the diversity of the criteria of acquisition, various attributes of classification, the artificiality of collections, transitionary value of objects, as well as personally and socially determined interpretations.

Sometimes Natural History Museums unknowingly treasure singular specimens in their collections for decades. The re-discovery of such elements allows the description of previously unknown features of well-known taxa. Here, we describe a nearly complete left premaxilla attributed to the pholidosaurid Elosuchus. Specimen IPS3303 shows some remarkable differences with previously known premaxillae of Elosuchus, especially concerning the relative position of the fifth premaxillary tooth and the premaxilla-maxilla sutural surface morphology. Because of the scarcity of current data, it is difficult to evaluate the significance of such differences. The described element is about 40% larger than the largest premaxilla of Elosuchus known so far, suggesting that this taxon could achieve remarkable body size proportions. The preliminary analyses of the dentition and the neurovascular system of the premaxilla provide new insight into the palaeoecology of this riverine crocodylomorph from the Cretaceous of Africa. Performance costumes have long been a distinctive way to visualize explicit and implicit cultural and social hierarchies, as well as to identify characters on stage. Stereotypical characters representing different ethnicities were familiar in Finland by the end of the nineteenth century, established with the help of instantly recognizable costumes and make-up, often premised by an internalized racism inherent to historical practices of costume design. This article focuses on the representation of ethnicity and especially racialized characters on the Finnish stage through the study of extant costumes and, in particular, a case study of two surviving "Lapp character" costumes in the artefact collection of the Theatre Museum in Finland in Helsinki, which houses objects considered worthy of preservation and representative of Finnish theatre history. By focusing on a previously unexplored type of costume, it is possible to propose new ways by which to enhance the visibility of marginalized perspectives in the museum collection. Background Of the 108 species that occur in Georgia, ten species are insectivores belonging to the order Eulipotyphla. Forty percent of them are endemic to the Caucasus and sixty percent are endemic to the Middle East, including the Caucasus. Up to now, no comprehensive data on the distribution of insectivores in Georgia have been available. The aggregated standardised data on the occurrence of small mammals can be applied to resource management, biogeography, ecological and systematic studies and to the planning of nature conservation efforts. Hereafter, the attempt to provide accumulated in one paper all known points of insectivores' occurrence in Georgia and make it available to researchers via the open repository GBIF is presented. The dataset is based on both literature data from 30 published sources (251 records), collection vouchers from four main zoological collections containing vouchers from Georgia (415 records) and authors' fieldwork results (217 records). The occurrence points of the specimens stored in collections and museums have been extracted from museum voucher labels and museum journals. New information All known sampling points of insectivores in Georgia are collected in one dataset for the first time. Our field surveillance data reach about 24.6% of the records. Most of our data collected since 2003 have not been published yet. The Moorish Gecko (Tarentola mauritanica) is a successful colonizer that has been introduced in many European countries. In Greece, the species' presence is documented for at least 150 years now and it has been only recently introduced on the islands of Corfu and Lesvos, and the prefectures of Aetoloakarnania and Attica (Athens city). In this document we unify the current knowledge on the Moorish Gecko's occurrence in Greece, with new, unpublished records, museum archives and citizen science data, in order to generate an updated image of the species' extant distribution. This merge of data fills several distributional gaps and also extends the Moorish Gecko's range in two new areas, namely Fokida prefecture and Kos Island. Introduction. Museum items tend to arouse significant research interest since they make it possible to trace household activities inherent to a certain community, i.e. aspects of life usually overlooked by archival documents. Astrakhan Reserve Museum houses an authentic collection of Buddhist icons examined in the present study. Goals. The paper attempts an analysis of Kalmyk dartsigs (Buddhist icons) as a source for historical and ethnographic research. Materials and methods. The ‘Kalmyk’ Collection of Astrakhan Reserve Museum numbers over 220 items, including 49 dartsigs. The work analyzes 48 icons, since dartsig 49 is attributed to the modern tradition and has no authentic value. The employed research methods are the historical/genetic, statistical, descriptive, anthropological ones, that of comparative analysis and others. The study is based on an interdisciplinary approach instrumental in providing multifaceted insights. Results. The shaping of the ‘Kalmyk’ Collection took place in the prerevolutionary and Soviet periods. The cultural artifacts were collected and donated to the Museum for a number of reasons, the primary one having been that members of Peter the Great Society for the Study of Astrakhan Land were seeking to preserve cultural heritage of peoples to have inhabited the region, lest the latter should be destroyed by the Soviets or lost in the swirl of history. Our comparisons of the current ‘Kalmyk’ Collection and other sources yield a list of certain Buddhist images that have been lost and are still of great scholarly interest. The well preserved thangkas without passe-partouts had been purposely painted and passed to Peter the Great Society, the poorly preserved ones with traces of soot had once been used in homes of Kalmyk commoners, while the larger and fine images are likely to have been attributes of Buddhist temples or estates of wealthy Kalmyks. The analysis of passe-partouts attests to that Kalmyks were actually handling the icons with utmost veneration, which is evident enough in the qualities of textiles the former were sewn from.

The case is applied on the storehouse of Ras Al Khaimah Museum at Ras Al Khaimah Port. It includes the different stages and processes of planning and achieving the development and redesigning the archaeological storehouse. The processing to revise and approve all the requirements and needed policies to achieve the whole preservation and management plan. The development of the preservation and management plan to transfer the storehouse into a research center for the management, documentation, study and use of the stored collections, and the establishment of a central storehouse for the Ras Al Khaimah Archeological and Museum department. The plan aims to develop the storehouse by transferring its current site for a center for collecting and preserving museum collections that are distributed between several secondary storehouses. This comes to emphasis the goals of Ras Al Khaimah National Museum.

The paper presents a previously unpublished numismatic collection from Rozhdestveno village in the Laishevsky District of Tatarstan included in the memorial collection of the Archaeological Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan of the Institute of Archaeology of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. Twelve silver coins of the 14th–15th centuries are analyzed and published for the first time. Previously published materials found in the vicinity of Rozhdestveno village are used for analysis. In general, this is a complex of more than 170 Juchid coins of the mid-13th – first half of the 15th centuries, and coins of Russian principalities. Most of the coins were minted in the 15th century. Two photo tables are attached to the paper. The numismatic material presented in the paper illustrates the monetary circulation of the Bolgar Vilayat in the 12th–15th centuries on the basis of archaeological materials found near Rozhdestveno.

The purpose of the article is to highlight the issues of museum collections as a database of expertise, which today is considered a separate direction of scientific and applied research. The affinity between the expertise and attribution of cultural values have been specified taking into account the tasks and methods they use during scientific research work. Research methods. To achieve the research goal, analytical, historical, epistemological, and axiological method, the method of theoretical generalisation have been used in order to specify the problem of using museum collections as a database for the examination of cultural values. Scientific novelty of the obtained results lies in the theoretical understanding of the possibility to use museum collections as a database for expert examinations in order to specify and deepen the knowledge about cultural values. This approach is an attempt to go beyond traditional art studies and make emphasis on the objective data, draw more accurate conclusions. Moreover, the use of museum collections may encourage a researcher to be more attentive to details and to deepen their knowledge. Conclusions. In order to understand the significance of the database of expert research in the system of protection and popularisation of cultural values, the existing basic concepts have been systematised. The commonality and interdependence have been established between the expertise and attribution, which is a well-founded opinion of a specialist with many years of experience and unique knowledge. The supremacy of museums in the field of expertise has a number of advantages, since each item, from the point of view of a museologist, has its own, strictly defined place in the system of cultural values. Nine unpublished obsidian artefacts (one cosmetics jar, two vessel fragments, and six eye inlays) from the Garstang Museum collection are presented, with the aim of patching gaps in the current record concerning their excavation contexts and material properties, which were presumably detailed in John Garstang's now-lost excavation report/notes. The objects date to the Early Dynastic and Old Kingdom periods, and five objects were matched to those described in previous archival research on Garstang's Abydos excavations. SEM-EDS was conducted to characterise the material compositions and make a preliminary assessment of the obsidian's provenance. It is suggested that the obsidian for the three vessels (analyses on prepared surfaces) may have originated in the region of modern Eritrea and Ethiopia, but the eye inlays (non-destructive analyses on raw surfaces) could not be matched to any geological obsidian source, highlighting the difficulties with balancing object preservation and analytical quality in researching museum collections. The kinorhynch species Echinoderes remanei (Blake, 1930) is redescribed herein, based on the material housed in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C as well as specimens collected at several other sites in the Northern Hemisphere. Echinoderes remanei is characterized by the presence of middorsal spines on segments 4 to 8 and lateroventral spines on segments 6 to 9; four pairs of glandular cell outlets type 2 on segment 2 (subdorsal, laterodorsal, sublateral, and ventrolateral), and one pair on segment 4 (subdorsal), 5 (midlateral), 8 (sublateral) and 10 (laterodorsal); lateroventral tubes on segment 5; and by sexual dimorphism expressed in lateral terminal spine lengths (in females, the lateral terminal spines are about half as long as those in males). The study also reveals that the two other species, Echinoderes tubilak Higgins & Kristensen, 1988 and Echinoderes svetlanae Adrianov, 1999 in Adrianov & Malakhov (1999) are conspecific with E. remanei. Therefore, E. tubilak and E. svetlanae are proposed as junior synonyms of E. remanei and are synonymized with E. remanei (Blake, 1930). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fourteen artifacts reveal reality and believes of ancient societies of Ecuador. The collection consists of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic ceramic figures created between the 16th century BCE and 16th century CE. Despite recent advances in high‐throughput DNA sequencing technologies, a lack of locally relevant DNA reference databases limits the potential for DNA‐based monitoring of biodiversity for conservation and biosecurity applications. Museums and national collections represent a compelling source of authoritatively identified genetic material for DNA database development, yet obtaining DNA barcodes from long‐stored specimens may be difficult due to sample degradation. Here we demonstrate a sensitive and efficient laboratory and bioinformatic process for generating DNA barcodes from hundreds of invertebrate specimens simultaneously via the Illumina MiSeq system. Using this process, we recovered full‐length (334) or partial (105) COI barcodes from 439 of 450 (98%) national collection‐held invertebrate specimens. This included full‐length barcodes from 146 specimens which produced low‐yield DNA and no visible PCR bands, and which produced as little as a single sequence per specimen, demonstrating high sensitivity of the process. In many cases, the identity of the most abundant sequences per specimen were not the correct barcodes, necessitating the development of a taxonomy‐informed process for identifying correct sequences among the sequencing output. The recovery of only partial barcodes for some taxa indicates a need to refine certain PCR primers. Nonetheless, our approach represents a highly sensitive, accurate and efficient method for targeted reference database generation, providing a foundation for DNA‐based assessments and monitoring of biodiversity. The paucity of biodiversity assessments in the Palaeotropics has constrained recommendations for tropical forest conservation in areas such as Siberut, one of the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia known for its high endemicity. Taking advantage of information from museum collections amassed from the Indo-Malaya archipelago from the early 20th century onwards, we show how species records available through online databases of natural history collections can be used to assess the state of biodiversity when used in conjunction with a field survey, using bat species on Siberut as a study case. We obtained a total of 15 years of records from 1903 to 2013 (following searches of databases up to 2020), documenting 20 bat species on Siberut. Of these, our field survey contributed records of three additional species not previously recorded on the island. The species accumulation curve has not levelled off, suggesting that future surveys may discover additional bat species and highlighting Siberut's importance as bat habitat and source of tropical biodiversity. Microbialites are microbial sedimentary structures that constitute some of the oldest traces of life on Earth. By their deposition in a wide range of sedimentary environments and their presence throughout most of geological time, the sedimentological and geochemical signatures they preserve represent important paleoenvironmental archives for understanding Earth's biological and geochemical co-evolution. Here we present a large microbialite collection containing >1370 curated specimens, covering all continents except Antarctica and spanning >3.5 Ga of Earth history, that is accessible to the international scientific community for examination and sampling at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNHN) in Paris, France. After cataloguing and evaluating the samples for their lithology, biogenicity, and inferred depositional environments, we characterized the collection for selected geochemical parameters, notably carbonate stable carbon and oxygen isotope ratios, as well as major, trace, and rare earth element compositions. Finally, we explore the different geochemical proxies analyzed with regards to their utility for reconstructing evolving Earth surface environments and/or microbial metabolisms via comparison of geochemical data from the MNHN Microbialite Collection to a compilation of similar proxy data for carbonates worldwide. We demonstrate that certain temporal trends previously recognized in carbonates worldwide (e.g., with respect to variations in C and O stable isotope compositions and redox sensitive trace element enrichments) are well reflected in this collection. Introduction. Herein we present an illustrative case from the Forensic Museum collection made by Professor Milovan Milovanović (1884–1948). Museum specimen No. 465 represents a jar containing three glass syringes and two small bottles of 10–20 ml, sealed with corks, found in the pockets of the deceased whose autopsy was performed in 1929. Case outline. It was a 30-year-old male, found dead in a tavern shed, a former medical student, lieutenant, and Russian emigre who came to Belgrade, Serbia in 1921 following the commanding general of the anti-Bolshevik White Army, Pyotr Nikolayevich Wrangel. He was an alcoholic, a drug user, and a member of the so-called Russian cocaine quartet gang. In the autopsy report, Professor Milovanović described a textbook example of a drug user: extremely malnourished body, skin covered with scabs, multiple „purulent abscesses” and „livid infiltrations,” and attenuated nasal septum with mucosa covered with scabs. Internal autopsy findings included fatty liver, pneumonia, and anemia of all internal organs. At the time, the whole brain, tissue of internal organs, and contents of the stomach and intestines were used for the analysis (“the Stas–Otto method for extraction of alkaloids”). Qualitative analyses showed “the presence of cocaine” in all the examined organs, and the analysis of the content from the “cloudy, colorless liquid” found in the dark bottle showed that it contained “0.0113 g of morphinum hydrochloricum.” Conclusion. Contemporary analyses of the material from one of the syringes and the transparent glass bottle performed 90 years later showed the presence of cocaine, morphine, and codeine, confirming that the cause of death was drug-related.

This article aims to shed light on the little-known history of the Hong Kong City Hall Museum. Housed in the old City Hall between 1869 and 1933, the museum was intended as a place of entertainment and education for the residents of the British colony, including Chinese people. Dedicated to research and seeking the dissemination of knowledge through scientific displays of natural history specimens and artefacts, it was to be an emblem of Hong Kong's modernity and embody a certain degree of 'civilization'. However, the City Hall Museum never lived up to the expectations it initially had raised, and its collections remained disappointing and inconsistent. This failure was perceived as a stigma for the colony. This paper intends to offer an understanding of why this institution, during its more than sixty years of existence, failed to gather sufficient organisation and resources to support itself and ended up disappearing from memory. Inle Lake in central Myanmar is one of the hotspots of freshwater biodiversity in Southeast Asia. A small malacological collection from the lake made by Thomas Nelson Annandale and discovered at the Kyoto University Museum, Japan was examined here. In the collection comprised of thirty specimens, nine species in seven families were identified. The collection also included four species and one subspecies which were newly described by Annandale. Two subspecies, Hydrobioides nassa lacustris Annandale, 1918 and H. n. rivulicola Annandale, 1918, were identified in a single lot. The correspondence of the shell morphology of Lamellidens ferrugineus (Annandale, 1918) between the present study and the original description indicates that the specimen is a paratype of the species. The rediscovered collection provides us with insights into the species definition of Annandale and the molluscan diversity of the lake prior to recent environmental changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Leopolis Collection (at the Museum of Independence) constitutes a valuable source of knowledge on the past of Lviv and its surroundings as well as the fate of the Polish people living there. Created in 1992 as a result of the efforts of Borderland circles, its contribution is used for research by museum specialists, professional historians and researchers of the Borderlands past. The artefacts, archival materials and publications collected there are made use of for preparing exhibitions, scholarly articles and monographs. These valuable collections in relation to exhibitions are still awaiting a systematic study. Research undertaken so far has borne fruit in the form of valuable monographs and studies, but there are many valuable materials still waiting to be unearthed. For the purposes of accessing the museum materials the creation of a Leopolis Collection catalogue is necessary so that its contents can be more broadly made use of – both in historical research and that pertaining to museum-based studies.

Research on plant-pollinator interactions requires a diversity of perspectives and approaches, and documenting changing pollinator-plant interactions due to declining insect diversity and climate change is especially challenging. Natural history collections are increasingly important for such research and can provide ecological information across broad spatial and temporal scales. Here, we describe novel approaches that integrate museum specimens from insect and plant collections with field observations to quantify pollen networks over large spatial and temporal gradients. We present methodological strategies for evaluating insect-pollen network parameters based on pollen collected from museum insect specimens. These methods provide insight into spatial and temporal variation in pollen-insect interactions and complement other approaches to studying pollination, such as pollinator observation networks and flower enclosure experiments. We present example data from butterfly pollen networks over the past century in the Great Basin Desert and Sierra Nevada Mountains, United States. Complementary to these approaches, we describe rapid pollen identification methods that can increase speed and accuracy of taxonomic determinations, using pollen grains collected from herbarium specimens. As an example, we describe a convolutional neural network (CNN) to automate identification of pollen. We extracted images of pollen grains from 21 common species from herbarium specimens at the University of Nevada Reno (RENO). The CNN model achieved exceptional accuracy of identification, with a correct classification rate of 98.8%. These and similar approaches can transform the way we estimate pollination network parameters and greatly change inferences from existing networks, which have exploded over the past few decades. These techniques also allow us to address critical ecological questions related to mutualistic networks, community ecology, and conservation biology. Museum collections remain a bountiful source of data for biodiversity science and understanding global change.
