We combine synchrotron-based near-field infrared spectroscopy and first principles lattice dynamics calculations to explore the vibrational response of CrPS4 in bulk, few-, and single-layer form. Analysis of the mode pattern reveals a C2 polar + chiral space group, no symmetry crossover as a function of layer number, and a series of non-monotonic frequency shifts in which modes with significant intralayer character harden on approach to the ultra-thin limit whereas those containing interlayer motion or more complicated displacement patterns soften and show inflection points or steps. This is different from MnPS3 where phonons shift as 1/size2 and are sensitive to the three-fold rotation about the metal center that drives the symmetry crossover. We discuss these differences as well as implications for properties such as electric polarization in terms of presence or absence of the P-P dimer and other aspects of local structure, sheet density, and size of the van der Waals gap.

We employ synchrotron-based near-field infrared spectroscopy to reveal the vibrational properties of bulk, few-sheet, and single-sheet members of the MPS3 (M=Mn, Fe, Ni) family of materials and compare our findings with complementary lattice dynamics calculations. MnPS3 and the Fe analog are similar in terms of their symmetry crossovers, from C2/m to P3¯1m, as the monolayer is approached. These states differ as to the presence of a C3 rotation around the metal center. On the other hand, NiPS3 does not show a symmetry crossover, and the lack of a Bu symmetry mode near 450 cm-1 suggests that C3 rotational symmetry is already present, even in the bulk material. We discuss these findings in terms of local symmetry and temperature effects as well as the curious relationship between these symmetry transformations and those that take place under pressure.

Ferroic materials are well known to exhibit heterogeneity in the form of domain walls. Understanding the properties of these boundaries is crucial for controlling functionality with external stimuli and for realizing their potential for ultra-low power memory and logic devices as well as novel computing architectures. In this work, we employ synchrotron-based near-field infrared nano-spectroscopy to reveal the vibrational properties of ferroelastic (90[Formula: see text] ferroelectric) domain walls in the hybrid improper ferroelectric Ca[Formula: see text]Ti[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text]. By locally mapping the Ti-O stretching and Ti-O-Ti bending modes, we reveal how structural order parameters rotate across a wall. Thus, we link observed near-field amplitude changes to underlying structural modulations and test ferroelectric switching models against real space measurements of local structure. This initiative opens the door to broadband infrared nano-imaging of heterogeneity in ferroics.

We measured the near-field infrared response of MnPS3 in bulk, few-, and single-layer form and compared our findings with traditional far-field vibrational spectroscopies, a symmetry analysis, and first-principles lattice dynamics calculations. Trends in the Bu mode near 450cm-1 are striking, with the disappearance of this structure in the thinnest sheets. Combined with the amplified response of the activated Ag mode and analysis of the Au+Bu features, we find that symmetry is unexpectedly increased in few- and single-sheet MnPS3 due to a restoration of the threefold axes of rotation. Monoclinicity in this system is therefore a consequence of the long-range stacking pattern and temperature rather than local structure.

We report a photovoltaic effect in ferroelectric BiFeO3 thin films. The all-oxide heterostructures with SrRuO3 bottom and tin doped indium oxide top electrodes are characterized by open-circuit voltages ∼0.8-0.9 V and external quantum efficiencies up to ∼10% when illuminated with the appropriate light. Efficiencies are at least an order of magnitude larger than the maximum efficiency under sunlight (AM 1.5) thus far reported for ferroelectric-based devices. The dependence of the measured open-circuit voltage on film thickness suggests contributions to the large open-circuit voltage from both the ferroelectric polarization and band offsets at the BiFeO3 /tin doped indium oxide interface. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

We combined synchrotron-based near field infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy to image the properties of ferroelastic domain walls in Sr 3 Sn 2 O 7 . Although frequency shifts at the walls are near the limit of our sensitivity, we can confirm semiconducting rather than metallic character and widths between 20 and 60 nm. The latter is significantly narrower than in other hybrid improper ferroelectrics like Ca 3 Ti 2 O 7 . We attribute this trend to the softer lattice in Sr 3 Sn 2 O 7 , which may enable the octahedral tilt and rotation order parameters to evolve more quickly across the wall without significantly increased strain. These findings are crucial for the understanding of phononic properties at interfaces and the development of domain wall-based devices.

The nodal-line semiconductor Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 is generating enormous excitment due to the recent discovery of a field-driven insulator-to-metal transition and associated colossal magnetoresistance as well as evidence for a new type of quantum state involving chiral orbital currents. Strikingly, these qualities persist even in the absence of traditional Jahn-Teller distortions and double-exchange mechanisms, raising questions about exactly how and why magnetoresistance occurs along with conjecture as to the likely signatures of loop currents. Here, we measured the infrared response of Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 across the magnetic ordering and field-induced insulator-to-metal transitions in order to explore colossal magnetoresistance in the absence of Jahn-Teller and double-exchange interactions. Rather than a traditional metal with screened phonons, the field-driven insulator-to-metal transition leads to a weakly metallic state with localized carriers. Our spectral data are fit by a percolation model, providing evidence for electronic inhomogeneity and phase separation. Modeling also reveals a frequency-dependent threshold field for carriers contributing to colossal magnetoresistance which we discuss in terms of polaron formation, chiral orbital currents, and short-range spin fluctuations. These findings enhance the understanding of insulator-to-metal transitions in new settings and open the door to the design of unconventional colossal magnetoresistant materials., (© 2024. The Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is a canonical model for understanding many-body gaps that emerge in quantum magnets, and as a result, there has been significant work on this class of materials for much of the past century. Chiral chains, on the other hand, have received markedly less attention. [Cu(pym)(H 2 O) 4 ]SiF 6 ·H 2 O (pym = pyrimidine) is an S = 1/2 chiral antiferromagnet with an unconventional spin gap and no long-range ordering at zero field, features that distinguish it from more conventional spin chains that host simple phase diagrams and no magnetoelectric coupling. Here, we report pulsed magnetic field electrical polarization measurements, strong magnetoelectric coupling, and extraordinary magnetic field - temperature phase diagrams for this system. In addition to three low field transitions, we find a series of phase transitions between 40 and 70 T that depend on the magnetic field direction. The observation of electric polarization in a material with a nonpolar crystal structure implies symmetry-breaking magnetic ordering that creates a polar axis - a mechanism that we discuss in terms of significant interactions between the chiral chains as well as Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya effects. Further, we find second-order magnetoelectric coupling, allowing us to deduce the magnetic point group of the highest polarization phase. These findings are in contrast to expectations for an unordered one-dimensional spin chain and reveal a significantly greater complexity of behavior in applied field.

We combined synchrotron-based infrared absorbance and Raman scattering spectroscopies with diamond anvil cell techniques and a symmetry analysis to explore the properties of multiferroic (NH 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 ·H 2 O under extreme pressure-temperature conditions. Compression-induced splitting of the Fe-Cl stretching, Cl-Fe-Cl and Cl-Fe-O bending, and NH 4 + librational modes defines two structural phase transitions, and a group-subgroup analysis reveals space group sequences that vary depending upon proximity to the unexpectedly wide order-disorder transition. We bring these findings together with prior high-field work to develop the pressure-temperature-magnetic field phase diagram uncovering competing polar, chiral, and magnetic phases in this system.

We combine synchrotron-based infrared absorption and Raman scattering spectroscopies with diamond anvil cell techniques and first-principles calculations to explore the properties of hafnia under compression. We find that pressure drives HfO[Formula: see text]:7%Y from the mixed monoclinic ([Formula: see text]) [Formula: see text] antipolar orthorhombic ([Formula: see text]) phase to pure antipolar orthorhombic ([Formula: see text]) phase at approximately 6.3 GPa. This transformation is irreversible, meaning that upon release, the material is kinetically trapped in the [Formula: see text] metastable state at 300 K. Compression also drives polar orthorhombic ([Formula: see text]) hafnia into the tetragonal ([Formula: see text]) phase, although the latter is not metastable upon release. These results are unified by an analysis of the energy landscape. The fact that pressure allows us to stabilize targeted metastable structures with less Y stabilizer is important to preserving the flat phonon band physics of pure HfO[Formula: see text]., Competing Interests: Competing interests statement:The authors declare no competing interest.

We employ synchrotron-based near-field infrared spectroscopy to image the phononic properties of ferroelectric domain walls in hexagonal ( h ) Lu 0.6 Sc 0.4 FeO 3 , and we compare our findings with a detailed symmetry analysis, lattice dynamics calculations, and prior models of domain-wall structure. Rather than metallic and atomically thin as observed in the rare-earth manganites, ferroelectric walls in h -Lu 0.6 Sc 0.4 FeO 3 are broad and semiconducting, a finding that we attribute to the presence of an A -site substitution-induced intermediate phase that reduces strain and renders the interior of the domain wall nonpolar. Mixed Lu/Sc occupation on the A site also provides compositional heterogeneity over micron-sized length scales, and we leverage the fact that Lu and Sc cluster in different ratios to demonstrate that the spectral characteristics at the wall are robust even in different compositional regimes. This work opens the door to broadband imaging of physical and chemical heterogeneity in ferroics and represents an important step toward revealing the rich properties of these flexible defect states.

Ordered mesoscale structures in 2D materials induced by small misorientations have allowed for a wide variety of electronic, ferroelectric, and quantum phenomena to be explored. Until now, the only mechanism to induce this periodic ordering was via mechanical rotations between the layers, with the periodicity of the resulting moiré pattern being directly related to twist angle. Here we report a fundamentally distinct mechanism for emergence of mesoscopic periodic patterns in multilayer sulfur-containing metal phosphorus trichalcogenide, MnPS 3 , induced by the electron beam. The formation under the beam of periodic hexagonal patterns with several characteristic length scales, nucleation and transitions between the phases, and local dynamics are demonstrated. The associated mechanisms are attributed to the relative contraction of the layers caused by beam-induced sulfur vacancy formation with subsequent ordering and lattice parameter change. As a result, the plasmonic response of the system is locally altered, suggesting an element of control over plasmon resonances by electron beam patterning. We pose that harnessing this phenomenon provides both insight into fundamental physics of quantum materials and enables device applications by enabling controlled periodic potentials on the atomic scale.

We combine high field polarization, magneto-infrared spectroscopy, and lattice dynamics calculations with prior magnetization to explore the properties of (NH 4 ) 2 [FeCl 5 ·(H 2 O)]─a type II molecular multiferroic in which the mixing between charge, structure, and magnetism is controlled by intermolecular hydrogen and halogen bonds. Electric polarization is sensitive to the series of field-induced spin reorientations, increasing linearly with the field and reaching a maximum before collapsing to zero across the quasi-collinear to collinear-sinusoidal reorientation due to the restoration of inversion symmetry. Magnetoelectric coupling is on the order of 1.2 ps/m for the P ∥ c , H ∥ c configuration between 5 and 25 T at 1.5 K. In this range, the coupling takes place via an orbital hybridization mechanism. Other forms of mixing are active in (NH 4 ) 2 [FeCl 5 ·(H 2 O)] as well. Magneto-infrared spectroscopy reveals that all of the vibrational modes below 600 cm -1 are sensitive to the field-induced transition to the fully saturated magnetic state at 30 T. We analyze these local lattice distortions and use frequency shifts to extract spin-phonon coupling constants for the Fe-O stretch, Fe-OH 2 rock, and NH 4 + libration. Inspection also reveals subtle symmetry breaking of the ammonium counterions across the ferroelectric transition. The coexistence of such varied mixing processes in a platform with intermolecular hydrogen- and halogen-bonding opens the door to greater understanding of multiferroics and magnetoelectrics governed by through-space interactions.

Vibrations play a prominent role in magnetic relaxation processes of molecular spin qubits as they couple to spin states, leading to the loss of quantum information. Direct experimental determination of vibronic coupling is crucial to understand and control the spin dynamics of these nano-objects, which represent the limit of miniaturization for quantum devices. Herein, we measure the magneto-infrared properties of the molecular spin qubit system Na 9 [Ho(W 5 O 18 ) 2 ]·35H 2 O. Our results place significant constraints on the pattern of crystal field levels and the vibrational excitations allowing us to unravel vibronic decoherence pathways in this system. We observe field-induced spectral changes near 63 and 370 cm -1 that are modeled in terms of odd-symmetry vibrations mixed with f -manifold crystal field excitations. The overall extent of vibronic coupling in Na 9 [Ho(W 5 O 18 ) 2 ]·35H 2 O is limited by a modest coupling constant (on the order of 0.25) and a transparency window in the phonon density of states that acts to keep the intramolecular vibrations and M J levels apart. These findings advance the understanding of vibronic coupling in a molecular magnet with atomic clock transitions and suggest strategies for designing molecular spin qubits with improved coherence lifetimes.

We combine Raman scattering spectroscopy and lattice dynamics calculations to reveal the fundamental excitations of the intercalated metal monolayers in the Fe x TaS 2 ( x = 1/4, 1/3) family of materials. Both in- and out-of-plane modes are identified, each of which has trends that depend upon the metal-metal distance, the size of the van der Waals gap, and the metal-to-chalcogenide slab mass ratio. We test these trends against the response of similar systems, including Cr-intercalated NbS 2 and RbFe(SO 4 ) 2 , and demonstrate that the metal monolayer excitations are both coherent and tunable. We discuss the consequences of intercalated metal monolayer excitations for material properties and developing applications.

Interface materials offer a means to achieve electrical control of ferrimagnetism at room temperature as was recently demonstrated in (LuFeO 3 ) m /(LuFe 2 O 4 ) 1 superlattices. A challenge to understanding the inner workings of these complex magnetoelectric multiferroics is the multitude of distinct Fe centres and their associated environments. This is because macroscopic techniques characterize average responses rather than the role of individual iron centres. Here, we combine optical absorption, magnetic circular dichroism and first-principles calculations to uncover the origin of high-temperature magnetism in these superlattices and the charge-ordering pattern in the m = 3 member. In a significant conceptual advance, interface spectra establish how Lu-layer distortion selectively enhances the Fe 2+  →  Fe 3+ charge-transfer contribution in the spin-up channel, strengthens the exchange interactions and increases the Curie temperature. Comparison of predicted and measured spectra also identifies a non-polar charge ordering arrangement in the LuFe 2 O 4 layer. This site-specific spectroscopic approach opens the door to understanding engineered materials with multiple metal centres and strong entanglement.

We combined Raman scattering and magnetic susceptibility to explore the properties of [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ]Mn(HCOO) 3 under compression. Analysis of the formate bending mode reveals a broad two-phase region surrounding the 4.2 GPa critical pressure that becomes increasingly sluggish below the order-disorder transition due to the extensive hydrogen-bonding network. Although the paraelectric and ferroelectric phases have different space groups at ambient-pressure conditions, they both drive toward P 1 symmetry under compression. This is a direct consequence of how the order-disorder transition changes under pressure. We bring these findings together with prior magnetization work to create a pressure-temperature-magnetic field phase diagram, unveiling entanglement, competition, and a progression of symmetry-breaking effects that underlie functionality in this molecule-based multiferroic. That the high-pressure P 1 phase is a subgroup of the ferroelectric Cc suggests the possibility of enhanced electric polarization as well as opportunity for strain control.

We measured the infrared vibrational properties of two copper-containing coordination polymers, [Cu(pyz) 2 (2-HOpy) 2 ](PF 6 ) 2 and [Cu(pyz) 1.5 (4-HOpy) 2 ](ClO 4 ) 2 , under different external stimuli in order to explore the microscopic aspects of spin-lattice coupling. While the temperature and pressure control hydrogen bonding, an applied field drives these materials from the antiferromagnetic → fully saturated state. Analysis of the pyrazine (pyz)-related vibrational modes across the magnetic quantum-phase transition provides a superb local probe of magnetoelastic coupling because the pyz ligand functions as the primary exchange pathway and is present in both systems. Strikingly, the PF 6 - compound employs several pyz-related distortions in support of the magnetically driven transition, whereas the ClO 4 - system requires only a single out-of-plane pyz bending mode. Bringing these findings together with magnetoinfrared spectra from other copper complexes reveals spin-lattice coupling across the magnetic quantum-phase transition as a function of the structural and magnetic dimensionality. Coupling is maximized in [Cu(pyz) 1.5 (4-HOpy) 2 ](ClO 4 ) 2 because of its ladderlike character. Although spin-lattice interactions can also be explored under compression, differences in the local structure and dimensionality drive these materials to unique high-pressure phases. Symmetry analysis suggests that the high-pressure phase of the ClO 4 - compound may be ferroelectric.

A proton-transfer reaction between squaric acid (H 2 sq) and 2,3-dimethylpyrazine (2,3-Me 2 pyz) results in crystallization of a new organic antiferroelectric (AFE), (2,3-Me 2 pyzH + )(Hsq - )·H 2 O ( 1 ), which possesses a layered structure. The structure of each layer can be described as partitioned into strips lined with methyl groups of the Me 2 pyzH + cations and strips featuring extensive hydrogen bonding between the Hsq - anions and water molecules. Variable-temperature dielectric measurements and crystal structures determined through a combination of single-crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction reveal an AFE ordering at 104 K. The phase transition is driven by ordering of protons within the hydrogen-bonded strips. Considering the extent of proton transfer, the paraelectric (PE) state can be formulated as (2,3-Me 2 pyzH + ) 2 (Hsq 2 3- )(H 5 O 2 + ), whereas the AFE phase can be described as (2,3-Me 2 pyzH + )(Hsq - )(H 2 O). The structural transition caused by the localization of protons results in the change in color from yellow in the PE state to colorless in the AFE state. The occurrence and mechanism of the AFE phase transition have been also confirmed by heat capacity measurements and variable-temperature infrared and Raman spectroscopy. This work demonstrates a potentially promising approach to the design of new electrically ordered materials by engineering molecule-based crystal structures in which hydrogen-bonding interactions are intentionally partitioned into quasi-one-dimensional regions.

We present the synthesis and magnetic characterization of a polycrystalline sample of the 6H-perovskite Ba 3 CeRu 2 O 9 , which consists of Ru dimers based on face-sharing RuO 6 octahedra. Our low-temperature magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and neutron powder diffraction results reveal a nonmagnetic singlet ground state for the dimers. Inelastic neutron scattering, infrared spectroscopy, and the magnetic susceptibility over a wide temperature range are best explained by a molecular orbital model with a zero-field splitting parameter D = 85 meV for the S tot = 1 electronic ground-state multiplet. This large value is likely due to strong mixing between this ground-state multiplet and low-lying excited multiplets, arising from a sizable spin molecular orbital coupling combined with an axial distortion of the Ru 2 O 9 units. Although the positive sign for the splitting ensures that Ba 3 CeRu 2 O 9 is not a single molecule magnet, our work suggests that the search for these interesting materials should be extended beyond Ba 3 CeRu 2 O 9 to other molecular magnets based on metal-metal bonding.

We bring together ac susceptibility and dc magnetization to uncover the rich magnetic field-temperature behavior of a series of rare earth indium oxides, RInO 3 (R = Tb, Dy, and Gd). The degree of frustration is much larger than expected, particularly in TbInO 3 , and the ground states are glasslike with antiferromagnetic tendencies. The activation energy for spin reorientation is low. Chemical substitution with Mn 3+ ions to form TbIn 1- x Mn x O 3 ( x ≤ 0.01) relieves much of the frustration that characterizes the parent compound and slightly enhances the short-range antiferromagnetic order. The phase diagrams developed from this work reveal the rich competition between spin orders and provide an opportunity to compare the dynamics in the RInO 3 and Mn-substituted systems. These structure-property relations may be useful for understanding magnetism in other geometrically frustrated multiferroics.

We bring together magnetization, infrared spectroscopy, and lattice dynamics calculations to uncover the magnetic field-temperature ( B- T) phase diagrams and vibrational properties of the [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ] M(HCOO) 3 ( M = Mn 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ ) family of multiferroics. While the magnetically driven transition to the fully saturated state in [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ]Mn(HCOO) 3 takes place at 15.3 T, substitution with Ni or Co drives the critical fields up toward 100 T, an unexpectedly high energy scale for these compounds. Analysis of the infrared spectrum of the Mn and Ni compounds across T C reveals doublet splitting of the formate bending mode which functions as an order parameter of the ferroelectric transition. By contrast, [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ]Co(HCOO) 3 reveals a surprising framework rigidity across the order-disorder transition due to modest distortions around the Co 2+ centers. The transition to the ferroelectric state is thus driven by the dimethylammonium cation freezing and the resulting hydrogen bonding. Under applied field, the Mn (and most likely, the Ni) compounds engage the formate bending mode to facilitate the transition to their fully saturated magnetic states, whereas the Co complex adopts a different mechanism involving formate stretching distortions to lower the overall magnetic energy. Similar structure-property relations involving substitution of transition-metal centers and control of the flexible molecular architecture are likely to exist in other molecule-based multiferroics.

We combine infrared and Raman spectroscopies to investigate finite length scale effects in CuGeO 3 nanorods. The infrared-active phonons display remarkably strong size dependence whereas the Raman-active features are, by comparison, nearly rigid. A splitting analysis of the Davydov pairs reveals complex changes in chemical bonding with rod length and temperature. Near the spin-Peierls transition, stronger intralayer bonding in the smallest rods indicates a more rigid lattice which helps to suppress the spin-Peierls transition. Taken together, these findings advance the understanding of size effects and collective phase transitions in low-dimensional oxides.

We combine magnetic circular dichroism and photoconductivity with prior optical absorption and first principles calculations to unravel spin-charge interactions in the high Curie temperature magnet CoFe 2 O 4 . In addition to revising the bandgap hierarchy, we reveal a broad set of charge transfer excitations in the spin down channel which are sensitive to the metamagnetic transition involving the spin state on Co centers. We also show photoconductivity that depends on an applied magnetic field. These findings open the door for the creation and control of spin-polarized electronic excitations from the minority channel charge transfer in spinel ferrites and other earth-abundant materials., (© 2018 Author(s).)

Diamond anvil cell techniques, synchrotron-based infrared and Raman spectroscopies, and lattice dynamics calculations are combined with prior magnetic property work to reveal the pressure-temperature phase diagram of Co[N(CN) 2 ] 2 . The second-order structural boundaries converge on key areas of activity involving the spin state exposing how the pressure-induced local lattice distortions trigger the ferromagnetic → antiferromagnetic transition in this quantum material.

Magnetoelastic coupling in the quantum magnet [Ni(HF 2 )(pyrazine) 2 ]SbF 6 has been investigated via vibrational spectroscopy using temperature, magnetic field, and pressure as tuning parameters. While pyrazine is known to be a malleable magnetic superexchange ligand, we find that HF 2 - is surprisingly sensitive to external stimuli and is actively involved in both the magnetic quantum phase transition and the series of pressure-induced structural distortions. The amplified spin-lattice interactions involving the bifluoride ligand can be understood in terms of the relative importance of the intra- and interplanar magnetic energy scales.

We combined high field optical spectroscopy and first principles calculations to analyze the electronic structure of Ni_{3}TeO_{6} across the 53 K and 9 T magnetic transitions, both of which are accompanied by large changes in electric polarization. The color properties are sensitive to magnetic order due to field-induced changes in the crystal field environment, with those around Ni1 and Ni2 most affected. These findings advance the understanding of magnetoelectric coupling in materials in which magnetic 3d centers coexist with nonmagnetic heavy chalcogenide cations.

We combined synchrotron-based infrared spectroscopy, Raman scattering, and diamond anvil cell techniques with complementary lattice dynamics calculations to reveal local lattice distortions in Mn[N(CN)2]2 under compression. Strikingly, we found a series of transitions involving octahedral counter-rotations, changes in the local Mn environment, and deformations of the superexchange pathway. In addition to reinforcing magnetic property trends, these pressure-induced local lattice distortions may provide an avenue for the development of new functionalities.

We bring together synchrotron-based infrared and Raman spectroscopies, diamond anvil cell techniques, and an analysis of frequency shifts and lattice dynamics to unveil the vibrational properties of multiwall WS2 nanotubes under compression. While most of the vibrational modes display similar hardening trends, the Raman-active A1g breathing mode is almost twice as responsive, suggesting that the nanotube breakdown pathway under strain proceeds through this displacement. At the same time, the previously unexplored high pressure infrared response provides unexpected insight into the electronic properties of the multiwall WS2 tubes. The development of the localized absorption is fit to a percolation model, indicating that the nanotubes display a modest macroscopic conductivity due to hopping from tube to tube.

Hydrogen bonding plays a foundational role in the life, earth, and chemical sciences, with its richness and strength depending on the situation. In molecular materials, these interactions determine assembly mechanisms, control superconductivity, and even permit magnetic exchange. In spite of its long-standing importance, exquisite control of hydrogen bonding in molecule-based magnets has only been realized in limited form and remains as one of the major challenges. Here, we report the discovery that pressure can tune the dimensionality of hydrogen bonding networks in CuF₂(H₂O)₂(3-chloropyridine) to induce magnetic switching. Specifically, we reveal how the development of O-H···Cl exchange pathways under compression combined with an enhanced ab-plane hydrogen bonding network yields a three dimensional superexchange web between copper centers that triggers a reversible magnetic crossover. Similar pressure- and strain-driven crossover mechanisms involving coordinated motion of hydrogen bond networks may play out in other quantum magnets.

We report the discovery of finite length scale effects on vibronic coupling in nanoscale α-Fe2O3 as measured by the behavior of vibronically activated d-d on-site excitations of Fe(3+) as a function of size and shape. An oscillator strength analysis reveals that the frequency of the coupled symmetry-breaking phonon changes with size, a crossover that we analyze in terms of increasing three-dimensional character to the displacement pattern. These findings demonstrate the flexibility of mixing processes in confined systems and suggest a strategy for both enhancing and controlling charge-lattice interactions in other materials.

This work brings together diamond anvil cell techniques, vibrational spectroscopies, and complementary lattice dynamics calculations to investigate pressure-induced local lattice distortions in α-Co[N(CN)2]2. Analysis of mode behavior and displacement patterns reveals a series of pressure-driven transitions that modify the CoN6 counter-rotations, distort the octahedra, and flatten the C-N(ax)-C linkages. These local lattice distortions may be responsible for the low temperature magnetic crossover. We also discuss prospects for negative thermal expansion and show that there is not a straightforward low pressure pathway between the pink α and blue β ambient pressure phases of Co[N(CN)2]2.

We combined Raman and infrared vibrational spectroscopies with complementary lattice dynamics calculations and magnetization measurements to reveal the dynamic aspects of charge-lattice-spin coupling in Co[N(CN)2]2. Our work uncovers electron-phonon coupling as a magnetic field-driven avoided crossing of the low-lying Co2+ electronic excitation with two ligand phonons and a magnetoelastic effect that signals a flexible local CoN6 environment. Their simultaneous presence indicates the ease with which energy is transferred over multiple length and time scales in this system.

We investigated the infrared vibrational properties of pristine and Re-substituted MoS2 nanoparticles and analyzed the extracted phonon lifetimes in terms of multiple scattering events. Our measurements reveal both size- and doping-dependent changes that we attribute to grain boundary scattering and charge and mass effects, respectively. By contrast, Born charge is affected only by size. These findings illustrate the utility of reaching beyond traditional bulk semiconductors and quantum dots to explore how doping and confinement impact carrier-phonon interactions in low-dimensional semiconducting nanomaterials.

We report the discovery of a magnetic quantum critical transition in Mn[N(CN)(2)](2) that drives the system from a canted antiferromagnetic state to the fully polarized state with amplified magnetoelastic coupling as an intrinsic part of the process. The local lattice distortions, revealed through systematic phonon frequency shifts, suggest a combined MnN(6) octahedra distortion+counterrotation mechanism that reduces antiferromagnetic interactions and acts to accommodate the field-induced state. These findings deepen our understanding of magnetoelastic coupling near a magnetic quantum critical point and away from the static limit.

We investigated the optical properties of 4,4'-stilbenedinitrene at low temperature and in high magnetic fields and compared the results with complementary first principles calculations. Both physical tuning parameters allow us to manipulate the singlet-triplet equilibrium, and by doing so, control the optical contrast (which is on the order of -2.5 × 10(2) cm(-1) at 555 nm and 35 T). Moreover, analysis of the magneto-optical response using a combined population and Beer's law framework reveals the singlet-triplet spin gap and identifies particular features in the absorption difference spectrum as deriving from singlet or triplet state excitations. These findings deepen our understanding of coupling in open shell molecules and show how chemical structure modification can modulate charge-spin interactions in organic biradicals.

We investigated the optical properties of rhenium-doped MoS2 nanoparticles and compared our findings with the pristine and bulk analogues. Our measurements reveal that confinement softens the exciton positions and reduces spin-orbit coupling, whereas doping has the opposite effect. We model the carrier-induced exciton blue shift in terms of the Burstein-Moss effect. These findings are important for understanding doping and finite length scale effects in low-dimensional nanoscale materials.

Phonons are exquisitely sensitive to finite length scale effects in a wide variety of materials. To investigate confinement in combination with strong magnetoelastic interactions, we measured the infrared vibrational properties of CoFe(2)O(4) nanoparticles and compared our results to trends in the coercivity over the same size range and to the response of the bulk material. Remarkably, the spectroscopic response is sensitive to the size-induced crossover to the superparamagnetic state, which occurs between 7 and 10 nm. A spin-phonon coupling analysis supports the core-shell model. Moreover, it provides an estimate of the magnetically disordered shell thickness, which increases from 0.4 nm in the 14 nm particles to 0.8 nm in the 5 nm particles, demonstrating that the associated local lattice distortions take place on the length scale of the unit cell. These findings are important for understanding finite length scale effects in this and other magnetic oxides where magnetoelastic interactions are important.

We investigated the tunability of the singlet-triplet equilibrium population in the organic biradical 1,4-phenylenedinitrene via magneto-optical spectroscopy. A rich magnetochromic response occurs because applied field increases the concentration of the triplet state species, which has a unique optical signature by comparison with the singlet biradical and the precursor molecule. A Curie-like analysis of the magneto-optical properties allows us to extract the spin gap, which is smaller than previously supposed. These measurements establish the value of local-probe photophysical techniques for magnetic property determination in open-shell systems such as biradicals where a traditional electron paramagnetic resonance Curie law analysis has intrinsic limitations.

We employed infrared spectroscopy along with complementary lattice dynamics and spin density calculations to investigate pressure-driven local structure distortions in the copper coordination polymer Cu(pyz)F(2)(H(2)O)(2). Here, pyz is pyrazine. Our study reveals rich and fully reversible local lattice distortions that buckle the pyrazine ring, disrupt the bc-plane O-H···F hydrogen-bonding network, and reinforce magnetic property switching. The resiliency of the soft organic ring is a major factor in the stability of this material. Interestingly, the collective character of the lattice vibrations masks direct information on the Cu-N and Cu-O linkages through the series of pressure-induced Jahn-Teller axis switching transitions, although Cu-F bond softening is clearly identified above 3 GPa. One emergent property of ferroelectric nanoparticles is the sized-induced structural distortion to a high-symmetry paraelectric phase at small particle sizes. Finite length scale effects can thus be advantageously employed to elucidate ferroelectric transition mechanisms. In this work, we combine infrared spectroscopy with group theory and lattice dynamics calculations to reveal the displacive nature of the ferroelectric transition in BiFeO3, a room temperature multiferroic. Systematic intensity and frequency trends in selected vibrational modes show that the paraelectric phase is Pm3m and the lowest frequency A1 feature is the soft mode that drives the first order transition. Finite length scale effects are also evident in the electronic structure with a red-shifted band gap in nanoscale BiFeO3 compared with that of the rhombohedral film, a result that can impact the development of ferroelectric photovoltaics and oxide-based electronics. Taken together, these findings demonstrate the foundational importance of size effects for enhancing the rich functionality and broad utility of transition metal oxides.

We measured the low-lying crystal field levels of Nd3+ in Nd3Ga5SiO14 via magneto-optical spectroscopy and employed the extracted energies, magnetic moments, and symmetries to analyze the magnetic properties and test the spin liquid candidacy of this material. The exchange interaction is surprisingly small, a discovery that places severe constraints on models used to describe the ground state of this system. Further, it demonstrates the value of local-probe photophysical techniques for rare-earth-containing materials where bulk property measurements can be skewed by low-lying electronic structure.

We investigated magnetoelastic coupling through the field-driven transition to the fully polarized magnetic state in quasi-two-dimensional [Cu(HF2)(pyz)2]BF4 by magnetoinfrared spectroscopy. This transition modifies out-of-plane ring distortion and bending vibrational modes of the pyrazine ligand. The extent of these distortions increases with the field, systematically tracking the low-temperature magnetization. These distortions weaken the antiferromagnetic spin exchange, a finding that provides important insight into magnetic transitions in other copper halides.

We investigated the optical properties of (NBu(4))(3)[Ni(NCS)(5)], a pentacoordinate Ni compound, and compared the results with the more traditional hexacoordinate analogue (NEt(4))(4)[Ni(NCS)(6)]. On the basis of our complementary electronic structure calculations, the color properties of this high spin complex can be understood in terms of excitations between strongly hybridized orbitals with significant Ni d and ligand character. Variable temperature vibrational studies show mode softening with decreasing temperature and splitting near 200 K, trends that we attribute to improved low temperature intermolecular interactions and a weak structural phase transition, respectively.

We investigated the series of temperature and field-driven transitions in LuFe2O4 by optical and Mössbauer spectroscopies, magnetization, and x-ray scattering in order to understand the interplay between charge, structure, and magnetism in this multiferroic material. We demonstrate that charge fluctuation has an onset well below the charge ordering transition, supporting the "order by fluctuation" mechanism for the development of charge order superstructure. Bragg splitting and large magneto-optical contrast suggest a low-temperature monoclinic distortion that can be driven by both temperature and magnetic field.

Application of a magnetic field offers an incisive opportunity to tune competing interactions in complex materials. Here we probe field-induced changes in the local structure of DyMn2O5 by using magnetoinfrared spectroscopy. The high tunability of the dielectric constant and ferroelectric polarization with field is well documented in the literature, but the lattice response on the microscopic level remains unknown. In this work, we reveal the dynamic nature of the local structural response to field and analyze it in terms of calculated mode displacements and local lattice distortions.

The H(2)F(3)(-) anion in mononuclear [Cu(dpd)(2)][(H(2)F(3))(2)] (dpd = di-2-pyridyl-methanediol) exists as a HF(2)(-)/HF adduct as evidenced by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.
