This study presents a novel interfacing setup for testing and validating wide‐area monitoring and control (WAMC) techniques used in smart grids. The main purpose of this study is to provide a realistic approach for conducting WAMC studies. In here, a wide‐area controller (WAC) for a flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) device is implemented. The measurements for the WAC are collected using phasor measurements units (PMUs). Three main segments are being interfaced in this study. First, the real‐power grid, the local area controller of the actual FACTS device, and the PMUs are simulated using real‐time digital simulator. This simulation represents the central simulation and is interfaced with the WAC, which is realised using a MATLAB‐based program. This interface represents a novel software‐in‐the‐loop (SIL) scheme. On the other hand, an actual FACTS device is designed and interfaced to the central simulation via hardware‐in‐the‐loop (HIL) scheme. This SIL and HIL combination makes the experimental testbed more realistic and closer to the industrial standard. Various tests are conducted to examine the performance of the developed testbed. • The nonlinear spatio-temporal correlations of the collected measurements from the distribution systems are utilized to develop an unsupervised deep LSTM-AE network to learn the normal dynamics of the distribution systems. • A false data injection attack detection method is developed and implemented by utilizing the developed LSTM-AE neural network model. • Wide-ranging comprehensive experiments on different systems are developed to evaluate the proposed approach performance with quantitative and comparative analysis. • The utilization of LSTM-AE provides two main advantages over other detection techniques: (i) better detection statistics for larger distribution systems, (ii) the unnecessity of labeled attack samples. The utilization of distributed generation units (DG) in power distribution systems has increased the complexity of system monitoring and operation. Numerous information and communication technologies have been adopted recently to overcome the challenges and complexities associated with the integration of DG units in distribution systems. However, these technologies have created wide opportunities for energy theft and other types of cyber-physical threats. False data injection attacks (FDIA) illustrate a challenging threat for distribution systems for these are very tough to detect in reality. In this manuscript, we propose a spatio-temporal learning algorithm that is able to acquire the normal dynamics of distribution systems to overcome possible FDIA. First, we use a long short-term memory autoencoder (LSTM-AE) in acquiring the usual dynamics. After that, we employ the unsupervised trained model in detecting the numerous potentials of FDIAs in distribution systems by assessing the residual error of every measurement sample. This developed method is purely data-driven. This enables it to be robust to the distribution systems' nonlinearities and uncertainties which overcomes the weaknesses of the proposed detection algorithms in the literature. An energy system with desalination and hydrogen production and storage is a promising option for remote areas with shorelines, e.g., Middle East, to jointly manage electricity, desalinated water and hydrogen resources. Thus, a hybrid renewable energy system considering seawater reverse osmosis desalination, proton exchange membrane electrolyzer stacks, and also proton exchange membrane fuel cell, is proposed. This work focuses on the optimal operation problem of the system. It is established in a multi-objective optimization manner, with consideration of minimizing system total cost, power transmission and renewable energy curtailment. The problem is solved with Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-III, a meta-heuristic method dedicated to multi-objective optimization. Results show through the solving of the optimization problem the optimal energy management strategy can be obtained, and in the studied scenario, the system can avoid 38–42% of carbon dioxide emission compared to conventional electricity generation and gray hydrogen production measures. The operational benefit of fuel cell is also verified. Compared to existing works, this work maintains the flexibility and cleanness of green hydrogen production components, consider more aspect in operation and can be solved with limited computational resources and obtain a satisfying result. • • Compressed air storage alone can firm up wind and solar variability in California. • • Increased penetration of renewable energy can decrease CAES storage requirements. • • Type of renewable energy strongly affects the required CAES capacity. • • Bulk CAES deployment has limited applications due to real-world constraints. Bulk energy storage can play an important role in the decarbonization of renewable-dominant electricity system. It can offer a solution to the grid balancing problem caused by the variability in the output of renewable power generation. This paper explores the requirement for compressed air energy storage (CAES) capacity as the penetration of renewable energy increases to compensate for the variability of wind and solar. A case study for California using parsimonious macro energy model with real-world historical demand and hourly weather data has been utilized to do this analysis. In the least-cost model, with no excess wind and solar power generation, required CAES capacity is 3.71TWh in 100% decarbonized scenario. If a strict rule of net-zero curtailment was in place, the storage capacity required would be 3.2% higher (3.83TWh) with 9.8% increased cost of electricity. However, the required CAES capacity decreases with the excess solar and wind power generation. In case of 2 times increase in the wind and solar potential the required CAES capacity with strict zero curtailment would be 19.2% less (3.10TWh) and the corresponding cost would decrease up to 29.7%. The study also revealed that the type of renewable energy mix (wind, solar or both) has strong effect on the required energy storage capacity for deep decarbonization. The presented results demonstrate that excess wind and solar power generation can be used to significantly reduce the required storage needs for a fully renewable power system at reduced cost. In California, building of a large battery energy storage (up to 3 TWh) is limited by societal, geographical, and economic constraints. This study suggests that in addition to the battery energy storage California may need to look for other dispatchable power sources (or the equivalent in load flexibility) for 100% wind and solar based fully decarbonized power system.
