Abstract This research explores the feasibility of using a nanocomposite from multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) for thermal engineering applications. The hybrid nanocomposites were suspended in water at various volumetric concentrations. Their heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics were analyzed using computational fluid dynamics and artificial neural network models. The study examined flow regimes with Reynolds numbers between 5000 and 17,000, inlet fluid temperatures ranging from 293.15 to 333.15 K, and concentrations from 0.01 to 0.2% by volume. The numerical results were validated against empirical correlations for heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop, showing an acceptable average error. The findings revealed that the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop increased significantly with higher inlet temperatures and concentrations, achieving approximately 45.22% and 452.90%, respectively. These results suggested that MWCNTs-GNPs nanocomposites hold promise for enhancing the performance of thermal systems, offering a potential pathway for developing and optimizing advanced thermal engineering solutions.

Background and objectivesProgressive myoclonic epilepsy (PME) is a group of neurological disorders characterized by recurrent myoclonic seizures with progressive neurological deterioration. We investigated the genetics of three unrelated patients with PME from Mali, a country in sub-Saharan Africa highly underrepresented in genetic and genomic research.MethodsParticipants were carefully examined and phenotyped. DNA was obtained for genetic analysis including whole exome sequencing (WES). In silico prediction tools and ACMG criteria were used to assess the deleteriousness of putative candidate variants.ResultsPedigree analysis suggests autosomal recessive inheritance patterns for one family and sporadic forms of PME for the two other cases. WES identified novel homozygous missense variants in all the three patients, one each for NHLRC1, EPM2A, and NEU1. The sequence variants segregated with PME in each family and in silico studies including protein 3D structures, CADD scores and ACMG criteria suggested that they were damaging.DiscussionPME is a group of clinically heterogeneous neurological disorders. Most reported cases in the literature are from European background with only a few cases described in North Africa. We report here novel pathogenic variants in three different genes causing PME phenotypes in three unrelated Malian patients, suggesting that genetic studies of underrepresented populations may expand the genetic epidemiology of PME. These findings also emphasize the need for inclusive genetic research to ensure a more targeted diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for diverse patient populations.

Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) comprises a large group of neurogenetic disorders characterized by progressive lower extremity spasticity. Neurological evaluation and genetic testing were completed in a Malian family with early-onset HSP. Three children with unaffected consanguineous parents presented with symptoms consistent with childhood-onset complicated HSP. Neurological evaluation found lower limb weakness, spasticity, dysarthria, seizures, and intellectual disability. Brain MRI showed corpus callosum thinning with cortical and spinal cord atrophy, and an EEG detected slow background in the index patient. Whole exome sequencing identified a homozygous missense variant in the adaptor protein (AP) complex 2 alpha-2 subunit (AP2A2) gene. Western blot analysis showed reduced levels of AP2A2 in patient-iPSC derived neuronal cells. Endocytosis of transferrin receptor (TfR) was decreased in patient-derived neurons. In addition, we observed increased axon initial segment length in patient-derived neurons. Xenopus tropicalis tadpoles with ap2a2 knockout showed cerebral edema and progressive seizures. Immunoprecipitation of the mutant human AP-2-appendage alpha-C construct showed defective binding to accessory proteins. We report AP2A2 as a novel genetic entity associated with HSP and provide functional data in patient-derived neuron cells and a frog model. These findings expand our understanding of the mechanism of HSP and improve the genetic diagnosis of this condition.

1D and 2D carbon nanomaterials such as multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were investigated numerically. The thermophysical properties of water and nanofluids using MWCNTs in different outer diameters (ODs) and GNPs in different surface areas (SSA) were measured at an inlet temperature of 303.15 K and 0.1wt.%. The 3D geometry was solved under a fully developed turbulent flow of 6000 ≤ Re ≤ 16,000 using the model of k-ω SST via (ANSYS FLUENT 2022R2) software. Four numerical networks, Polyhedra, Polyhexacore, Hexacore, and Tetrahedral, were optimized. Moreover, seven parameters were discussed, namely wall surface temperature (Tw), heat transfer coefficient (htc), average Nusselt number (Nuavg), friction factor (f), pressure drop (ΔP), and total thermal performance index (PIth). Polyhexacore was the main grid over Polyhedra, Hexacore, and Tetrahedral with the average error (Dittus-Boelter: 2.754%, Gnielinski: 2.343%, Blasius: 1.441%, and Petukhov: 0.640%). Heat transfer increased by 18.38% with GNPs-300, 22.05% with GNPs-500, 23.25% with GNPs-750, 13.63% with CNT < 8 nm, and 11.42% with CNT 20–30 nm, relative to H2O at Re = 16,000. Pressure drop increased by about 42.01% with GNPs-300, 45.16% with GNPs-500, 44.84% with GNPs-750, 36.72% with CNT < 8 nm, and 34.39% with CNT 20-30 nm.

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are slow-growing benign tumors commonly found in the cerebellopontine angle, potentially compressing brain structures and cranial nerves, including the abducens nerve (AN), responsible for lateral gaze. Although large VSs may compress the AN, postsurgical AN palsy is rare, and the clinical significance of AN variations, particularly in VS cases, remains unclear. We report a unique case of a 29-year-old female with a large left vestibular schwannoma. The patient underwent a left-sided microsurgical two-stage excision with an uneventful recovery (House-Brackmann facial grade I). During surgery, a rare variant of the AN was identified. This AN originated as two separate trunks and merged 3 mm distal to its origin in the same segment. To the best of our knowledge, arising and merging in the cisternal segment of AN variation has not been reported previously. Recognizing AN variations is vital for successful skull base surgeries, especially in preserving both branches during vestibular schwannoma surgery and ensuring ocular function.

Abstract The choice of resin for ceramic stereolithographic 3D printing has a critical impact on printed ceramic preforms. In this study, we focused on the correlation between resin composition and parameters such as cure depth, surface morphology, lateral dimension, apparent layer height, and surface roughness. Special emphasis was placed on the addition of an oligomer and a plasticizing agent to a monomer‐based suspension. Four suspensions were studied: a 100% monomer (ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate) only suspension (M100), a suspension with 25% by weight plasticizing agent (polyethylene glycol) (PEG25), and two different suspensions with oligomer (urethane methacrylate) added at 25% (O25) and 50% (O50) by weight. Constant energy and printing parameters were used between suspensions. Adding a plasticizing agent (PEG25) was found to increase the cure depth and projected image of the samples, while additional oligomer with both amounts (O25 and O50) resulted in a decrease in the same parameters. The suspensions with oligomer were found to have increased surface roughness measured using the average deviation from the profile height mean line (Ra), with O25 at 13.47 µm and O50 at 11.47 µm. All suspensions had negative values of skewness (Rsk) in the range –0.4 to –1.2. PEG25 had the surface most distinct from a normally distributed surface with an Rsk of –1.12 and a kurtosis (Rku) value of 4.49. The use of the average length of a profile element (RSm) as a layer height estimation tool was explored and it was found that the RSm was within 10 µm of the printed layer height in all suspensions studied except for PEG25. This study highlights the importance of resin composition in ceramic stereolithographic 3D printing. Modulating the inclusion of a plasticizing agent and oligomer in the resin has significant effects on printed sample parameters such as cure depth and surface roughness.

This article presents an efficient and effective design approach of the phase distribution calculation across metasurface for significant radar cross section (RCS) reduction of a circular polarization (CP) and liner polarization (LP) radar waves. The RCS reduction using the proposed design approach is achieved by imposing a novel cusp phase mask (which is usually used to generate 3D self-accelerating and self-healing cusp beams) at each geometric phased anisotropic unit cell composing the proposed cusp phased metasurface. By solving the cusp phase formula using MATLAB, it is found that the cusp phase mask required to achieve more than 10 dB of RCS reduction over a wide frequency band can be calculated without the need of significant lengthy optimizations or huge computer resources. The ability of such cusp phase mask metasurfaces to achieve significant backward scattering and RCS reduction has been rigorously investigated by means of simulations and measurements. When illuminated by a far-field radar CP or LP plane wave, the proposed cusp phased metasurface realizes more than 10 dB of RCS reduction from 10.9 to 26 GHz, corresponding to a fractional bandwidth of FBW = 81.8%. The 10 dB RCS reduction bandwidth of the cusp metasurface is maintained under both normal and wide angular incidence up to 75o. The proposed cusp metasurfaces have potential applications to make objects stealthy where the incidence radar signal has an unknown frequency, polarization, or angle of incidence.

Abstract Frogs are an ecologically diverse and phylogenetically ancient group of anuran amphibians that include important vertebrate cell and developmental model systems, notably the genus Xenopus. Here we report a high-quality reference genome sequence for the western clawed frog, Xenopus tropicalis, along with draft chromosome-scale sequences of three distantly related emerging model frog species, Eleutherodactylus coqui, Engystomops pustulosus, and Hymenochirus boettgeri. Frog chromosomes have remained remarkably stable since the Mesozoic Era, with limited Robertsonian (i.e., arm-preserving) translocations and end-to-end fusions found among the smaller chromosomes. Conservation of synteny includes conservation of centromere locations, marked by centromeric tandem repeats associated with Cenp-a binding surrounded by pericentromeric LINE/L1 elements. This work explores the structure of chromosomes across frogs, using a dense meiotic linkage map for X. tropicalis and chromatin conformation capture (Hi-C) data for all species. Abundant satellite repeats occupy the unusually long (~20 megabase) terminal regions of each chromosome that coincide with high rates of recombination. Both embryonic and differentiated cells show reproducible associations of centromeric chromatin and of telomeres, reflecting a Rabl-like configuration. Our comparative analyses reveal 13 conserved ancestral anuran chromosomes from which contemporary frog genomes were constructed.

Rapid identification of the type and origin of a stroke is crucial for prompt and appropriate treatment, which can significantly influences patient outcomes. We report a multidisciplinary management case involving a 76-year-old man who presented with left-sided weakness and mild dysarthria. Imaging revealed a completely occluded right internal carotid artery. Despite multiple endovascular recanalization attempts, adequate flow could not be achieved, leading to the decision to perform an open thrombo-endarterectomy. The patient underwent carotid endarterectomy with microsurgical techniques under general anesthesia. The atheroma plaque and central thrombus were removed, which reestablished flow. Continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring was utilized to ensure patient safety. The patient woke up without new deficits and was discharged for rehabilitation. Follow-up imaging confirmed arterial patency, and the patient eventually made an excellent recovery, including being independent over one and a half years. Emergent recanalization with carotid endarterectomy following a failed endovascular recanalization is both safe and feasible, emphasizing the need for collaboration between different treatment providers to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Our report highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and the advantages of a hybrid operating room in the treatment of acute complete carotid artery occlusion.

Controlling the feature resolution and dimension of printed products using stereolithography requires a comprehensive understanding of compositional and printing variables. Balancing these variables adds more complexity to manufacturing near net shape products. In this study, the compositional variables examined include particle size and solid content using two resins, and printing variables include layer thickness and energy dose. Choosing the energy dose for curing depends on compositional variables and consequently affects the degree of scattering. The results shows that light scattering determines the changes in the feature resolution and lateral dimensions. The layer thickness only affects the feature resolution and not the lateral dimensions. The vertical dimension does not significantly change with the chosen variables. In this study, fine-tuning the variables is shown to produce parts with high precision and resolution. Both compositional and printing variables play a key role in achieving near net shape products.

Background: To clinically evaluate how dry eye symptoms in preoperatively diagnosed dry eye patients change with the use of sodium hyaluronate- and dexpanthenol-containing eye drops (HYLO CARE (HC), URSAPHARM Arzneimittel GmbH, Saarbruecken, Germany) after cataract surgery. The aim of the study was not to compare different eye drops but to implement standard treatment in patients with dry eye undergoing cataract surgery. The impact of treatment was evaluated using Symptom Assessment Tools for Dry Eye. Methods: In this prospective, single-center, open-label clinical trial, 49 patients undergoing cataract surgery were included who showed signs and symptoms of dry eye disease assessed by the Symptom Assessment in Dry Eye (Visual Analogue Scale (VAS)) questionnaire, Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), and fluorescein tear break-up Time (TBUT). Patients were instructed to apply HC three to four times a day for 5 weeks in the operated eye in addition to the standard postoperative topical anti-inflammatory regimen. The primary endpoint was the change in TBUT. Secondary endpoints were the assessment of the subjective symptoms (VAS), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and slit-lamp examination including the corneal staining score, Schirmer test, and intraocular pressure. Results: At 5 weeks after operation, the mean TBUT increased from 6.42 ± 1.57 s (s) to 7.81 ± 1.83 s in the per-protocol (PP) population (p > 0.001) and from 6.33 ± 1.64 s to 7.71 ± 2.05 s in the intention-to-treat (ITT) population (p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant decrease in all scores (p < 0.05) from the VAS questionnaire except for the tearing score (p = 0.062) at 5 weeks after operation. The mean total corneal staining score also decreased statistically significantly from 8.85 ± 2.49 before operation to 5.61 ± 3.37 at 5 weeks after operation on a 15-point scale. Conclusions: Controlled standardized dry eye treatment (with HC) improved tear film stability, ocular surface defects, and subjective symptoms of dry eye disease in patients 5 weeks after undergoing cataract surgery. Both the patient and physician assessments indicated high efficacy, tolerability, and a reliable safety profile, as indicated by the low number of at least possibly related adverse events (AE), suggesting its beneficial role in the postoperative management of the ocular surface (OS) in patients with dry eye symptoms prior to and after cataract surgery.

Abstract According to recent reports, planar structure-based organometallic perovskite solar cells (OPSCs) have achieved remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE), making them very competitive with the more traditional silicon photovoltaics. A complete understanding of OPSCs and their individual parts is still necessary for further enhancement in PCE. In this work, indium sulfide (In2S3)-based planar heterojunction OPSCs were proposed and simulated with the SCAPS (a Solar Cell Capacitance Simulator)-1D programme. Initially, OPSC performance was calibrated with the experimentally fabricated architecture (FTO/In2S3/MAPbI3/Spiro-OMeTAD/Au) to evaluate the optimum parameters of each layer. The numerical calculations showed a significant dependence of PCE on the thickness and defect density of the MAPbI3 absorber material. The results showed that as the perovskite layer thickness increased, the PCE improved gradually but subsequently reached a maximum at thicknesses greater than 500 nm. Moreover, parameters involving the series resistance as well as the shunt resistance were recognized to affect the performance of the OPSC. Most importantly, a champion PCE of over 20% was yielded under the optimistic simulation conditions. Overall, the OPSC performed better between 20 and 30 °C, and its efficiency rapidly decreases above that temperature.

To compare the efficiency of three systems to evaluate the suitability of Gypsiferous land for irrigated agriculture, an area of 8885.4 hectares was selected in the Tharthar region – Iraq within the Euphrates terrace, which formed at Pleistocene period and mainly consisted of gypsum, the study included a semi-detailed survey of the area's soil using the Free-lance method, by selecting three parallel transects, according to the variations in texture class, soil salinity and content of gypsum, five representative pedons locations were identified and morphologically described, also soil samples from each horizon were obtained, as well as we obtained water samples from the Euphrates river-Tharthar canal and every wells located in the study area, it's transferred to the laboratory and the required analyzes were performed. The result showed the predominance of the medium soil texture class and slightly saline soil class (S1) in the study area, with a decrease in the soil carbonate content, on the contrary the soil gypsum content was increased. All wall waters was salinity, which poses a danger to agricultural use, compared to the water of the Euphrates river. A discrepancy was observed between the obtained land suitability classes. While the Sys and Verheye, 1972 system showed two poor suitability classes, Sys et al. 1991 and Al-Baji et al. 2010 has improved the appropriateness of the varieties, but the Kadhim, 2012 system was the best in terms of application in order to include the quality of irrigation water within the classification, so its results were more close to the reality diagnosed during the field visits to the study area and the questionnaire from the land users of the region

The flat-plate solar collector (FPSC) three-dimensional (3D) model was used to numerically evaluate the energy and economic estimates. A laminar flow with 500 ≤ Re ≤ 1900, an inlet temperature of 293 K, and a solar flux of 1000 W/m2 were assumed the operating conditions. Two mono nanofluids, CuO-DW and Cu-DW, were tested with different shapes (Spherical, Cylindrical, Platelets, and Blades) and different volume fractions. Additionally, hybrid nanocomposites from CuO@Cu/DW with different shapes (Spherical, Cylindrical, Platelets and Blades), different mixing ratios (60% + 40%, 50% + 50% and 40% + 60%) and different volume fractions (1 volume%, 2 volume%, 3 volume% and 4 volume%) were compared with mono nanofluids. At 1 volume% and Re = 1900, CuO-Platelets demonstrated the highest pressure drop (33.312 Pa). CuO-Platelets achieved the higher thermal enhancement with (8.761%) at 1 vol.% and Re = 1900. CuO-Platelets reduced the size of the solar collector by 25.60%. Meanwhile, CuO@Cu-Spherical (40:60) needed a larger collector size with 16.69% at 4 vol.% and Re = 1900. CuO-Platelets with 967.61, CuO – Cylindrical with 976.76, Cu Platelets with 983.84, and Cu-Cylindrical with 992.92 presented the lowest total cost. Meanwhile, the total cost of CuO – Cu – Platelets with 60:40, 50:50, and 40:60 was 994.82, 996.18, and 997.70, respectively.

Abstract Under conventional and silica-supported Muffle furnace methods, water-soluble substituted trimeric triaryl pyridinium cations with various inorganic counter anions are synthesized. The solvent-free synthesis method is superior to the conventional method in terms of non-toxicity, quicker reaction times, ease of workup, and higher yields. Trimeric substituted pyridinium salts acted as excellent catalytic responses for the preparation of Gem-bisamide derivatives compared with available literature. To evaluate the molecular docking, benzyl/4-nitrobenzyl substituted triaryl pyridinium salt compounds with VEGFR-2 kinase were used with H-bonds, π–π stacking, salt bridges, and hydrophobic contacts. The results showed that the VEGFR-2 kinase protein had the most potent inhibitory activity. Intriguingly, the compound [NBTAPy]PF6 - had a strongly binds to VEGFR-2 kinase and controlled its activity in cancer treatment and prevention.

l-Ornithine- l-aspartate (LOLA) reduces toxic ammonium (NH3) plasma levels in hepatic encephalopathy. NH3 detoxification/excretion is achieved by its incorporation into urea and glutamine via activation of carbamoyl phosphate synthetase 1 (CSP1) by l-ornithine and stimulation of arginase by l-aspartate. We aimed at identifying additional molecular targets of LOLA as a potential treatment option for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In primary hepatocytes from NAFLD patients, urea cycle enzymes CSP1 and ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) increase, while the catabolism of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) decreases with disease severity. In contrast, LOLA increased the expression rates of the BCAA enzyme transcripts bcat2, bckdha, and bckdk. In untreated HepG2 hepatoblastoma cells and HepG2-based models of steatosis, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome (the latter for the first time established herein), LOLA reduced the release of NH3; beneficially modulated the expression of genes related to fatty acid import/transport (cd36, cpt1), synthesis (fasn, scd1, ACC1), and regulation (srbf1); reduced cellular ATP and acetyl-CoA; and favorably modulated the expression of master regulators/genes of energy balance/mitochondrial biogenesis (AMPK-α, pgc1α). Moreover, LOLA reconstituted the depolarized mitochondrial membrane potential, while retaining mitochondrial integrity and avoiding induction of superoxide production. Most effects were concentration-dependent at ≤40 mM LOLA. We demonstrate for l-ornithine-l-aspartate a broad range of reconstituting effects on metabolic carriers and targets of catabolism/energy metabolism impaired in NAFLD. These findings strongly advocate further investigations to establish LOLA as a safe, efficacious, and cost-effective basic medication for preventing and/or alleviating NAFLD.

Since the establishment of the International GNSS Service (IGS) stations, they have been used as control stations for assigning the Precise point positioning (PPP) positions using one Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver, which has increased from day-to-day. There are some factors affecting the accuracy of PPP positioning. This research aims to investigate the relation between the IGS distance and observed field points as well as to attempt to describe that relation mathematically/statically. For the realization of that aim, two field points are fixed inside the Assiut University campus and observed successively for a session of 24 hour observation. The position of each field point is assigned with the help of each one of the available IGS station products. It must be known that these products are found after observations in three files (IGU, IGR, and final IGS), whereas IGU is used directly as real-time data (ultra-rapid), IGR (rapid) is used through (17-41 hours) after observation, and (final IGS) used after 12 – 18 days. Coordinates and point errors of each field points are computed and represented. It has been found that the errors have a positive relation with the available IGS stations distances. The relation between these distances and point positioning errors have been represented and described according to a model. The accuracy of the presented model is (R ≅ .98, x2 ≅ 2.5 × 10-3).

Abstract Transitioning from pluripotency to differentiated cell fates is fundamental to both embryonic development and adult tissue homeostasis. Improving our understanding of this transition would facilitate our ability to manipulate pluripotent cells into tissues for therapeutic use. Here, we show that membrane voltage (Vm) regulates the exit from pluripotency and the onset of germ layer differentiation in the embryo, a process that affects both gastrulation and left-right patterning. By examining candidate genes of congenital heart disease and heterotaxy, we identify KCNH6, a member of the ether-a-go-go class of potassium channels that hyperpolarizes the Vm and thus limits the activation of voltage gated calcium channels, lowering intracellular calcium. In pluripotent embryonic cells, depletion of kcnh6 leads to membrane depolarization, elevation of intracellular calcium levels, and the maintenance of a pluripotent state at the expense of differentiation into ectodermal and myogenic lineages. Using high-resolution temporal transcriptome analysis, we identify the gene regulatory networks downstream of membrane depolarization and calcium signaling and discover that inhibition of the mTOR pathway transitions the pluripotent cell to a differentiated fate. By manipulating Vm using a suite of tools, we establish a bioelectric pathway that regulates pluripotency in vertebrates, including human embryonic stem cells.

Abstract Zinc oxide-silver (ZnO–Ag), and zinc oxide-gold (ZnO–Au) nano-composites were prepared through wet chemical process and laced into single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to yield ZnO–Ag-SWCNTs, and ZnO–Au-SWCNTs hybrids. These nano-composite-laced SWCNTs hybrids were characterized using Raman spectroscopic, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses. The hybrids were evaluated for their effects on phagocytic cells and bactericidal activity against the gram-negative bacteria E. coli. Their phagocytic cell activities and intracellular killing actions were found to be significantly increased, as the ZnO–Ag-SWCNTs and ZnO–Au-SWCNTs nano-hybrids induced widespread clearance of Escherichia coli. An increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) also led to upregulated phagocytosis, which was determined mechanistically to involve the phagocyte NADPH oxidase (NOX2) pathway. The findings emphasized the roles of ZnO–Ag- and ZnO–Au-decorated SWCNTs in the prevention of bacterial infection by inhibiting biofilm formation, showing the potential to be utilized as catheter coatings in the clinic.

Abstract This study investigated for the first time a simple bio-synthesis approach for the synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) using Annona muricata L (A. muricata) plant extract to test their anti-cancer effects. The presence of CuONPs was confirmed by UV–visible spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Transmission electron microscope (TEM). The antiproliferative properties of the synthesized nanoparticles were evaluated against (AMJ-13), (MCF-7) breast cancer cell lines, and the human breast epithelial cell line (HBL-100) as healthy cells. This study indicates that CuONPs reduced cell proliferation for AMJ-13 and MCF-7. HBL-100 cells were not significantly inhibited for several concentration levels or test periods. The outcomes suggest that the prepared copper oxide nanoparticles acted against the growth of specific cell lines observed in breast cancer. It was observed that cancer cells had minor colony creation after 24 h sustained CuONPs exposure using (IC50) concentration for AMJ-13 was (17.04 µg mL−1). While for MCF-7 cells was (18.92 µg mL−1). It indicates the uptake of CuONPs by cancer cells, triggering apoptosis. Moreover, treatment with CuONPs enhanced Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) production, probably caused by cell membrane damage, creating leaks comprising cellular substances like lactate dehydrogenase. Hence, research results suggested that the synthesized CuONPs precipitated anti-proliferative effects by triggering cell death through apoptosis.

Up to 50% of patients with severe congenital heart disease (CHD) develop life-altering neurodevelopmental disability (NDD). It has been presumed that NDD arises in CHD cases because of hypoxia before, during, or after cardiac surgery. Recent studies detected an enrichment in de novo mutations in CHD and NDD, as well as significant overlap between CHD and NDD candidate genes. However, there is limited evidence demonstrating that genes causing CHD can produce NDD independent of hypoxia. A patient with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and gross motor delay presented with a de novo mutation in SMC5. Modeling mutation of smc5 in Xenopus tropicalis embryos resulted in reduced heart size, decreased brain length, and disrupted pax6 patterning. To evaluate the cardiac development, we induced the conditional knockout (cKO) of Smc5 in mouse cardiomyocytes, which led to the depletion of mature cardiomyocytes and abnormal contractility. To test a role for Smc5 specifically in the brain, we induced cKO in the mouse central nervous system, which resulted in decreased brain volume, and diminished connectivity between areas related to motor function but did not affect vascular or brain ventricular volume. We propose that genetic factors, rather than hypoxia alone, can contribute when NDD and CHD cases occur concurrently.

The surgical management of vestibular schwannomas should be based on their presentation, neuro-imaging findings, surgeons’ expertise, and logistics. Multi-stage surgery can be beneficial for large-sized lesions with acute presentations. Herein, we highlighted the indications for two cases managed initially through the retrosigmoid and, subsequently, translabyrinthine approaches. The first case presented with acute balance and gait issues and a long history of hearing loss and blurred vision. Neuroimaging findings revealed a cerebellopontine angle lesion, resembling a vestibular schwannoma, with significant brainstem compression and hydrocephalus. Due to the rapidly deteriorating clinical status and large-sized tumor, we first proceeded with urgent decompression via a retrosigmoid approach, followed by gross total resection via a translabyrinthine approach two weeks later. The second case presented with gradually worsening dizziness and hemifacial numbness accompanied by acute onset severe headaches and hearing loss. Neuroimaging findings showed a large cerebellopontine angle lesion suggestive of a vestibular schwannoma with acute intratumoral hemorrhage. Given the acute clinical deterioration and large size of the tumor, we performed urgent decompression with a retrosigmoid approach followed by gross total resection through a translabyrinthine approach a week later. Post-surgery, both patients showed excellent recovery. When managing acutely presented large-sized vestibular schwannomas, immediate surgical decompression is vital to avoid permanent neurological deficits.

In this paper, the performance of a mobile wireless communication network operating over the Fisher-Snedecor F composite fading channel is analyzed. Specifically, a multi-antenna base station transmits information to a single-antenna mobile receiver, which employs the maximal-ratio transmission technique to improve the quality of the received signal. The well-known random waypoint mobility model is assumed to characterize the mobility of the receiver. Under this mobility scenario, we derive exact closed-form expressions for the probability density function, cumulative distribution function, and consequently for the Outage Probability (OP), the average Bit Error Rate (BER) for different digital modulation schemes, and the average channel capacity. To shed light into the impact of different channel parameters, simple asymptotic expressions at the high SNR regime are obtained for the OP and average BER. To validate our analytical expressions, the comprehensive Monte-Carlo simulations are conducted under various configurations and both results are in excellent agreement.

Obtaining detailed and precise information from a classified refractory gold ore has been a long-standing challenge in mineral processing and process mineralogy. Although the concept of diagnostic leaching has been extensively addressed in the literature, very little information is available linking this approach with current advanced characterization techniques such as automated mineralogy. The present research study aims to characterize the flotation concentrate of refractory gold ore by combining diagnostic leaching and automated mineralogy to examine its processability. The diagnostic leaching process was applied stepwise at five stages, and the automated mineralogy was performed on different size fractions of the flotation concentrate. The chemical (X-ray fluorescence (XRF), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES)) and mineralogical (X-ray diffraction (XRD)) analyses of the feed sample confirmed that the ore is a low-grade gold ore with 0.7 g/t Au. Initially, bottle roll tests were carried out to investigate leaching behavior, and the ore’s refractory nature, and gold recoveries of bottle roll tests in different sizes were below 40 wt%; it is classified as a high refractory gold ore as a result of direct cyanide leaching. Bulk sulfide flotation was applied to increase the gold content of the material. Automated mineralogy results demonstrated that most of the gold in the concentrate is present as an invisible gold form, and 63.7 wt% of gold was distributed in pyrite. Diagnostic leaching results showed 39.7 wt% of total gold was leachable using direct cyanide leaching, and around 33 wt% of undissolved gold was located in pyrite and arsenopyrite.

This article presents the design of 1-bit metasurfaces for radar cross section (RCS) reduction over wide frequency band from 60 GHz to 120 GHz. The proposed 1-bit metasurfaces can be designed without the need for any complicated optimization algorithms such as genetic algorithms (GA) or particle swarm algorithms (PSO), or time-consuming simulations to achieve the optimized phase distribution map. The phase distribution maps required for more than 10-dB RCS reduction of the proposed metasurfaces were generated using two-dimensional (2D) quick response (QR) 1-bit generator in MATLAB which are fast and efficient. After we carefully studied several metasurfaces with various 2D QR codes, it was found that the QR coded metasurfaces are very powerful in achieving more than 10-dB RCS reduction with low-level diffusive scattering patterns. Two metasurfaces with their unit cells phase distributions being exactly the same as the QR codes of the words “IEEE” and “Metasurface” were designed and their RCS reduction characteristics were investigated. For off-normal or oblique incidence, more than 10-dB RCS reduction is preserved up to incident angles of 60° over the entire frequency band. The simulation and measured results show the proposed QR coded metasurfaces reduce the backscattered energies and RCS by more than 10-dB for different polarizations over the frequency range from 60 GHz to 120 GHz yielding a fractional bandwidth of 66.7%. The proposed approach is powerful and fast and makes the realization of coding metasurface much easier.

The retrieval of important information from a dataset requires applying a special data mining technique known as data clustering (DC). DC classifies similar objects into a groups of similar characteristics. Clustering involves grouping the data around k-cluster centres that typically are selected randomly. Recently, the issues behind DC have called for a search for an alternative solution. Recently, a nature-based optimization algorithm named Black Hole Algorithm (BHA) was developed to address the several well-known optimization problems. The BHA is a metaheuristic (population-based) that mimics the event around the natural phenomena of black holes, whereby an individual star represents the potential solutions revolving around the solution space. The original BHA algorithm showed better performance compared to other algorithms when applied to a benchmark dataset, despite its poor exploration capability. Hence, this paper presents a multi-population version of BHA as a generalization of the BHA called MBHA wherein the performance of the algorithm is not dependent on the best-found solution but a set of generated best solutions. The method formulated was subjected to testing using a set of nine widespread and popular benchmark test functions. The ensuing experimental outcomes indicated the highly precise results generated by the method compared to BHA and comparable algorithms in the study, as well as excellent robustness. Furthermore, the proposed MBHA achieved a high rate of convergence on six real datasets (collected from the UCL machine learning lab), making it suitable for DC problems. Lastly, the evaluations conclusively indicated the appropriateness of the proposed algorithm to resolve DC issues.

Bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) has attracted considerable research interest in test thin films made utilizing the reactive plasma sputtering (RPS) technology-assisted annealing treatment, allowing the development of diverse BixOx thin films. SEM, phase X-ray diffraction patterns, UV-Vis spectrometers, and D.C. two-probes are used to identify the crystallographic structure and assess the films’ optical-electrical properties. The XRD examination showed that forming Bi2O3 films with an amorphous to multiphase crystalline structure for sputtering time of 40 min was due to soda glass substrate temperature at a range of 30–35°C. Thin films of Bi2O3 crystal structures improved with annealing heat treatment at 200, 300, 400, and 500°C. Yet the formation of crystalline phase (β-Bi2O3 with δ-Bi2O3) Bi2O3 nanostructures occurred at higher temperatures. SEM images showed transparent particles highly affected by annealing temperatures. The nanostructures were about 102–510 nm long, and the diameter was 50–100 nm. The Bi2O3 film optical band gaps and nanostructures ranged from 2.75 to 3.05 eV. The annealing temperature differences affected the crystallite sizes, optical band gaps, and surface roughness. The findings showed that these differences caused the phase transition in Bi2O3 structures. The electrical calculation revealed that the electrical conductivity improved with annealing temperatures of 150–250°C while declining with temperature (300–500)°C with typical semiconductor films.

Background: The most chronic disease prevalence in the Iraqi population are type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension (HT). One of the important causes of these chronic diseases is obesity. Resistin (RETN) is a major link between obesity and insulin resistance (IR) or T2DM (which induces IR). The action of RETN on IR is mediated by Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4). TLR4 is a putative RETN receptor that has been suggested to participate in RETN-inducing inflammation and IR. Objectives: To study the association between serum RETN/TLR4 and IR in hypertensive patients with or without T2DM subjects. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 120 men that classified into four different groups. These groups consist of the following: 30 apparently control group, 30 patients with hypertension, 30 patients with T2DM but without HT and 30 hypertensive patients with T2DM. For all the subjects, serum RETN, TLR4 and serum insulin was estimated by using the ELISA technique. Results: Our results showed that mean levels of the serum RETN and TLR4 were significantly elevated in all patient groups when compared with the control group. Also, a positive correlation between serum RETN and TLR4 was found in hypertensive patients with T2DM patients. Conclusions: Serum RETN and TLR4 were higher in all patient groups when compared with the control group. In addition, a positive correlation between RETN and IR in all study groups was noted. Then, we suggested a close association between RETN and TLR4 and their positive correlations with IR.

Introduction. Tangential gunshot wounds (TGSW) to the head is the high-velocity bullet that does not penetrate the cranium but passes through the tissue adjoining the cranial cavity, creating a “gutter” wound and indirectly causing cerebral injury. This article presents a reporting case of TGSW to the head, discusses the mechanism underlying this traumatic injury and the possible complications resulting from it, and reviews of literature. Case description. A thirteen-year-old schoolboy was admitted to the emergency department (ER) of the neurosurgery teaching hospital in Baghdad, Iraq, with a tangential gunshot to the head of an unknown source during civilian protests in Baghdad. In addition to a seizure attack in the ER, his Glasgow coma (GCS) scale was 13 initially. The computed tomography showed multiple bilateral brain contusions, interhemispheric haemorrhage, partially depressed fracture of the frontal bone midline, and a Paramedian to the left with a significantly depressed skull fracture. Then, an urgent decompressive craniectomy was performed. The postoperative course was uneventful, with rapid improvement in GCS of 15 one hour after surgery. On the six-month follow-up, the patient reported no further attacks of seizure. Conclusion. TGSWs are associated with good GCS and favourable prognosis in most cases unless the patient has been deteriorating or has an associated ICH. Moreover, in our case, the history taking, mechanism of the injury, rapid evolution, and radiological imaging have an essential effect on the outcome.

Wnt signaling is essential for many aspects of embryonic development including the formation of the primary embryonic axis. In addition, excessive Wnt signaling drives multiple diseases including cancer, highlighting its importance for disease pathogenesis. β-catenin is a key effector in this pathway that translocates into the nucleus and activates Wnt responsive genes. However, due to our lack of understanding of β-catenin nuclear transport, therapeutic modulation of Wnt signaling has been challenging. Here, we took an unconventional approach to address this long-standing question by exploiting a heterologous model system, the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which contains a conserved nuclear transport machinery. In contrast to prior work, we demonstrate that β-catenin accumulates in the nucleus in a Ran-dependent manner, suggesting the use of a nuclear transport receptor (NTR). Indeed, a systematic and conditional inhibition of NTRs revealed that only Kap104, the ortholog of Kap-β2/Transportin-1 (TNPO1), was required for β-catenin nuclear import. We further demonstrate direct binding between TNPO1 and β-catenin that is mediated by a conserved PY-NLS. Finally, using Xenopus secondary axis and TCF/LEF (T Cell factor/lymphoid enhancer factor family) reporter assays, we demonstrate that our results in yeast can be directly translated to vertebrates. By elucidating the nuclear localization signal in β-catenin and its cognate NTR, our study suggests new therapeutic targets for a host of human diseases caused by excessive Wnt signaling. Indeed, we demonstrate that a small chimeric peptide designed to target TNPO1 can reduce Wnt signaling as a first step toward therapeutics.

A new series of ternary metal complexes, including Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and diverse spectroscopic methods. The complexes were synthesized from respective metal salts with Schiff’s-base-containing amino acids, salicylaldehyde derivatives, and heterocyclic bases. The amino acids containing Schiff bases showed promising pharmacological properties upon complexation. Based on satisfactory elemental analyses and various spectroscopic techniques, these complexes revealed a distorted, square pyramidal geometry around metal ions. The molecular structures of the complexes were optimized by DFT calculations. Quantum calculations were performed with the density functional method for which the LACVP++ basis set was used to find the optimized molecular structure of the complexes. The metal complexes were subjected to an electrochemical investigation to determine the redox behavior and oxidation state of the metal ions. Furthermore, all complexes were utilized for catalytic assets of a multi-component Mannich reaction for the preparation of -amino carbonyl derivatives. The synthesized complexes were tested to determine their antibacterial activity against E. coli, K. pneumoniae, and S. aureus bacteria. To evaluate the cytotoxic effects of the Cu(II) complexes, lung cancer (A549), cervical cancer (HeLa), and breast cancer (MCF-7) cells compared to normal cells, cell lines such as human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) were used. Further, the docking study parameters were supported, for which it was observed that the metal complexes could be effective in anticancer applications.

The goal of the current work was to create an antibacterial agent by using polycaprolactone/chitosan (PCL/CH) nanofibers loaded with Cordia myxa fruit extract (CMFE) as an antimicrobial agent for wound dressing. Several characteristics, including morphological, physicomechanical, and mechanical characteristics, surface wettability, antibacterial activity, cell viability, and in vitro drug release, were investigated. The inclusion of CMFE in PCL/CH led to increased swelling capability and maximum weight loss. The SEM images of the PCL/CH/CMFE mat showed a uniform topology free of beads and an average fiber diameter of 195.378 nm. Excellent antimicrobial activity was shown towards Escherichia coli (31.34 ± 0.42 mm), Salmonella enterica (30.27 ± 0.57 mm), Staphylococcus aureus (21.31 ± 0.17 mm), Bacillus subtilis (27.53 ± 1.53 mm), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (22.17 ± 0.12 mm) based on the inhibition zone assay. The sample containing 5 wt% CMFE had a lower water contact angle (47 ± 3.7°), high porosity, and high swelling compared to the neat mat. The release of the 5% CMFE-loaded mat was proven to be based on anomalous non-Fickian diffusion using the Korsmeyer–Peppas model. Compared to the pure PCL membrane, the PCL-CH/CMFE membrane exhibited suitable cytocompatibility on L929 cells. In conclusion, the fabricated antimicrobial nanofibrous films demonstrated high bioavailability, with suitable properties that can be used in wound dressings.

The role of visceral white adipose tissue (vWAT) in the progression of non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD) with its sub entities non-alcoholic fatty liver and steatohepatitis (NAFL; NASH) is underinvestigated. We thus explored mechanisms of fibrosis and regulated cell death in vWAT and liver tissue. In NAFLD, women displayed significantly more fibrosis in vWAT than men, and collagen 1α mRNA expression was significantly upregulated. The degrees of fibrosis in vWAT and liver tissue correlated significantly. The size of vWAT-resident adipocytes in NAFLD correlated negatively with the local degree of fibrosis. The extent of apoptosis, as measured by circulating M30, positively correlated with the degree of fibrosis in vWAT; necrosis-associated HMGB1 mRNA expression was significantly downregulated in vWAT and liver tissue; (iii) necroptosis-related RIPK-3 mRNA expression was significantly upregulated in vWAT; and autophagy-related LC3 mRNA expression was significantly downregulated in vWAT, while upregulated in the liver. Thus, the different cell death mechanisms in the vWAT in NAFLD are regulated independently while not ruling out their interaction. Fibrosis in vWAT may be associated with reduced adipocyte size and thus partially protective against NAFLD progression. Functional resonance magnetic imaging (fMRI) allows for identification of eloquent cortex in pre-treatment planning. Previous studies have shown a correlation among lesion to activation distance (LAD) measures and morbidity and mortality. This study investigates the relationship between LAD, well-established language centers (Wernicke’s and Broca’s), and language performance measures. We included a sample population of brain tumor patients that received language fMRI (verbal fluency and sentence verification) for pre-treatment assessment (n = 51). LAD to the nearest language area was measured and divided into groups ≤ 10 mm and > 10 mm. Verbal fluency scores were compared between these groups. Additionally, patients were divided into similar groups based on LAD to either Broca’s or Wernicke’s areas, and the verbal fluency scores and sentence verification accuracy (n = 29) were subsequently compared between groups. Brain tumor patients with LAD ≤ 10 mm to either language area had significantly lower verbal fluency scores (p = 0.028). The difference in verbal fluency scores between groups with LAD ≤ 10 mm and > 10 mm to Wernicke’s area trends toward significance (p = 0.067). The sentence verification accuracy was significantly lower in patients with LAD ≤ 10 mm to either language area (p = 0.039). These findings suggest that there exists a significant relationship between LAD to language centers and measures; greater language deficits are seen when LAD ≤ 10 mm.

Abstract Background Metronidazole has a substantial impact on the gut microbiome. However, the recovery of the microbiome after discontinuation of administration, and the metabolic consequences of such alterations have not been investigated to date. Objectives To describe the impact of 14‐day metronidazole administration, alone or in combination with a hydrolyzed protein diet, on fecal microbiome, metabolome, bile acids (BAs), and lactate production, and on serum metabolome in healthy dogs. Animals Twenty‐four healthy pet dogs. Methods Prospective, nonrandomized controlled study. Dogs fed various commercial diets were divided in 3 groups: control group (no intervention, G1); group receiving hydrolyzed protein diet, followed by metronidazole administration (G2); and group receiving metronidazole only (G3). Microbiome composition was evaluated with sequencing of 16S rRNA genes and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR)‐based dysbiosis index. Untargeted metabolomics analysis of fecal and serum samples was performed, followed by targeted assays for fecal BAs and lactate. Results No changes were observed in G1, or G2 during diet change. Multi-phase permanent magnet motors are becoming popular in various applications such as high power traction which require low cogging and torque ripple, and reduced noise and vibration. This paper presents the development process of a full order detailed mathematical model for an unconventional nine-phase permanent magnet (PM) motor with asymmetric AC windings. The phase inductances are calculated based on the individual winding functions. Using these parameters, electrical equations for each phase based on the voltages and flux linkages are generated. These equations are transformed into an arbitrary reference frame and the torque equations are developed for the 9-phase motor. A Matlab-Simulink model is then developed for the proposed nine-phase PM motor based on the developed dynamic equations. Finally, the model is validated with the finite element analysis and laboratory testing of the prototype motor. It is shown that the developed mathematical model can be used for such complex asymmetric winding multi-phase PM motors.

The progress in textile industrial technologies comes along with a massive increase in the discharge of dyes in the wastewater which considers a serious environmental problem. In this regard, a new electrochemical system has been developed for the treatment of simulated dye solutions of permanent methylene blue dye by an electrochemical cyclic ring reactor. An aluminum rod and a stainless steel mesh were used as the anode and cathode. The experiments on the artificial dye solutions have been carried out in a 6-liter electrochemical cell containing 50 ppm neutral dye solutions. The effects of various parameters such as electrolysis time applied current density (2, 3.32, 5.31, 6.64, and 7.46 mA cm−2), electrolyte concentrations (600, 900, 1200, 1500, and 1800 ppm), and flow rates (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 Lh−1) on the process removal efficiency were examined. The results demonstrated that the removal efficiency reached 94–99% within 40–50 minutes of electrolysis time. The removal efficiency increased by increasing the flow rates until it reaches a maximum value at a flow rate of 2 Lh−1; thereafter, it declined with the farther augment of recirculation speed. It is indicated that raising the applied current resulted in increasing the removal efficiency. However, the power consumption builds up to the maximum value by increasing the applied current, where the power consumption rose from 8.51 to 30.3 kWh kg−1 with an increase in the current density from 2 to 7.46 mA cm−2, and a removal efficiency increased from 94% to 99%, accordingly. The results also showed that by increasing the electrolyte concentration, the power consumption can be reduced to its minimum value and the removal efficiency increased remarkably.

Perovskite quantum dots (CsPbI _3 -PQDs), a translucent material, have gained great interest in the PV industries owing to their unified virtues of perovskites and quantum dots. However, researchers have found that perovskite solar cells (PSCs) suffer from issues like low stability at high relative humidity, energy states imbalance, severe hysteresis, and an easy decomposition under ultraviolet (UV) radiation that severely restrict their industrialization. Quantum dots (QDs) are excellent materials with numerous admirable traits that have been extensively employed in PSCs to overcome the aforementioned problems. To achieve high performance of the examined device, the CsPbI _3 -PQDs has been stacked between two charge transport layers, i.e., Cl@SnO _2 (to facilitate electrons towards cathode) and P _3 HT (to facilitate holes towards anode). In this context, study of variations in different parameters such as thickness and acceptor density of the CsPbI _3 -PQDs absorber layer has been done. After varying the thickness and acceptor density of the CsPbI _3 -PQDs layer, the cell’s performance is optimized at thickness of 400 nm and acceptor density of 1 × 10 ^17 /cm ^3 delivering higher PV parameters power conversion efficiency (PCE):16.17%, open circuit voltage (V _OC ):1.02 V, short circuit density (J _SC ):18.06 mA cm ^−2 and fill factor (FF): 87.06% respectively. Thereafter, the effects of bulk defects in CsPbI _3 -PQDs and the interface between CsPbI _3 -PQDs and Cl@SnO _2 have been explored in this work. For the cell to work at its best, the bulk defect density and interface defect density, respectively, should not be more than 1 × 10 ^14 /cm ^3 and 1 × 10 ^13 /cm ^2 . Afterwards, a comprehensive study has been done by varying the front electrode transparency (from 40% to 95%) to improve the device performance. With 95% of front electrode transparency, the performance of device is improved due to increase in the photon coupling.

Perovskite-based solar cells have drawn a lot of attention recently because they possess many desirable qualities, including strong photon absorption, large carrier lifetime, ambipolar transmission, and low exciton binding energy. With continual optimization of each functional layer, particularly the active layer and hole transporting layer, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite materials has reached over 25%. Spiro-OMeTAD is a widely utilized hole transport material (HTM) for efficient solar cell operation. To improve conductivity, this material is often doped with additives such as 4-tert-butylpyridine (TBP) or bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide lithium salt (Li-TFSI). Unfortunately, these additives can weaken the perovskite layer and reduce device stability. In this work, we enhanced the efficiency as well as stability of formamidinium-based perovskite using additive-free, cost-effective HTM based on vinyl triarylamines developed by the Tokyo chemical industry. We have deposited vinyl triarylamines-based HTM on both FAPbI _3 and MAPbI _3 perovskite. To compare the results, we have deposited traditional additive-based as well as additive free Spiro-OMeTAD on FAPbI _3 perovskite. Results are encouraging as the FAPbI _3 -based device showed a decent power conversion efficiency of 16.86%, which is higher than when the same HTM is deposited on the MAPbI _3 -based device and comparable with doped Spiro-OMeTAD and much higher than undoped Spiro-OMeTAD based HTM deposited on FAPbI _3 perovskite. Enhancement in device performance is attributed to better hole mobility and favourable energy band positioning of vinyl triarylamines based hole transport layer w.r.t FAPbI _3 perovskite. The PCE of a FAPbI _3 -based device using the suggested HTM (SHTM) suffers only a 12% decrease while following the maximum power point for 1800 h in ambient air.

The high absorption coefficient and low cost with plentiful availability make the material iron pyrite (FeS _2 ) promising for solar cell applications. However, their efficiency in the literature is still around 2.8% due to their low V _OC . The presence of an acceptor-type surface inversion layer (SIL) with a significant band gap (0.56 eV–0.72 eV) is the main cause of this low performance. A detailed study considering these two parameters is not available in the literature to relate device performance to underlying phenomena. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of the band gap and doping variation of SIL was performed in this article to explore the efficiency potential of FeS _2 solar cells. The results showed that SIL with a low bandgap is highly undesirable, and it is recommended to fabricate SIL with a higher band gap of 0.72 eV and a doping of 10 ^19 cm ^−3 in the laboratory to achieve a conversion efficiency of 5.36%. It was also confirmed that FeS _2 -based solar cells without a SIL layer have the potential to deliver 10.3% conversion efficiency. The results reported in this study will pave the way for underestimating the workings of iron pyrite solar cells and developing highly efficient FeS _2 solar cells.

Compared to traditional physical and chemical approaches, nanobiotechnology and plant-based green synthesis procedures offer significant advantages, as well as having a greater range of medical and biotechnological applications. Nanoparticles of zinc oxide (ZnO NPs) have recently been recognized as a promising option for many industries, including optics, electrics, packaged foods, and medicine, due to their biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, and cost-effectiveness. Several studies have shown that zinc ions are important in triggering cell apoptosis by promoting the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) and releasing zinc ions (Zn2+), which are toxic to cells. The toxic nature of the chemicals used in the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles limits their clinical utility. An overview of recent developments in green ZnO NP synthesis is presented in this review, emphasizing plant parts as reducing agents and their medical applications, including their antimicrobial, anticancer, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as key mechanisms of action for these applications to facilitate further research on the biomedical fields in the future.

How cells count and regulate organelle number is a fundamental question in cell biology. For example, most cells restrict centrioles to two in number and assemble one cilium; however, multiciliated cells (MCCs) synthesize hundreds of centrioles to assemble multiple cilia. Aberration in centriole/cilia number impairs MCC function and can lead to pathological outcomes. Yet how MCCs control centriole number remains unknown. Using Xenopus, we demonstrate that centriole number scales with apical area over a remarkable 40-fold change in size. We find that tensile forces that shape the apical area also trigger centriole amplification based on both cell stretching experiments and disruption of embryonic elongation. Unexpectedly, Piezo1, a mechanosensitive ion channel, localizes near each centriole suggesting a potential role in centriole amplification. Indeed, depletion of Piezo1 affects centriole amplification and disrupts its correlation with the apical area in a tension-dependent manner. Thus, mechanical forces calibrate cilia/centriole number to the MCC apical area via Piezo1. Our results provide new perspectives to study organelle number control essential for optimal cell function.

Abstract Background Monogenic mutations may be a significant cause of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome. NUP93 is a gene previously reported to cause isolated steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome. Case presentation Here we describe a case of recessive, syndromic, steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome caused by NUP93 mutation. Conclusions NUP93 may convey a phenotype that has not only SRNS, but also other syndromic features.
