Background: Potentially malignant disorders such as leukoplakia and erythroplakia are often associated with dysplastic changes that have an increased risk for malignant transformation. CD34 is considered as an important marker for tissue vascularization, which represents microvessel density. P63 has a role in epithelial proliferation and is frequently altered in dysplasia and associated with tumorigenesis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of CD34 and p63 in different grades of oral epithelial dysplasia (OED). Methods and Results: This research included 50 histopathologically confirmed OED. CD34 and P63 expressions were studied by using the immunohistochemical technique. Most OED lesions were observed in patient between 40 and 69 years of age. Buccal mucosa was the most affected site (42%). According to histopathological grades, mild OED was predominant (54%). There was a significant difference among OED grades through the P63 marker. Conclusion: The P63 marker can be considered a good indicator for malignant transformation by grade scoring scales, and the CD34 marker can be used as a useful diagnostic indicator for OED.

Introduction: We aimed to assess the expression of p63 among different clinical types of oral lichen planus. Methods: The current study includes 44 oral lichen planus cases from the oral pathology laboratory, oral diagnostic department, Baghdad University. P63-PRM114P used as primary monoclonal antibodies. The intensity of immunohistochemistry activity was calculated utilizing the following criteria: weak intensity: one positive cell, moderate intensity: two positive cells, and strong intensity: three or more positive cells (magnification 20×). Results: The mean age of participants was 52.82 ± 12. No significant relationship found between gender and expression of p63 (P = 0.65). The p63 expressed in all clinical types of oral lichen planus (OLP). Yet, expression of p63 was not significantly related to the clinical type of OLP (P = 0.98). Conclusion: We could not found relationship between expression of p63 among different clinical types of oral lichen planus. With respect to the limited sample size of this study, some larger scale studies among different populations are need to reach to a definitive conclusion regarding relationship between expression of p63 among different clinical types of oral lichen planus.

Background: Basal Cell Carcinoma is a malignant epithelial neoplasm of the skin that can be seen in the area of chronic sun exposure. If it is inadequately treated or left untreated, it can cause local tissue invasion and low death. Objective: To evaluate different parameters of basal cell carcinoma cases referred to Ghazy Al-hariri Hospital for Surgical Specialist. Patients and Methods: Retrospective study done in Ghazy Al-hariri hospital for surgical specialist, medical city, Baghdad during the period from 2009 till 2012, 6579 reports from archives of histopathological laboratories were review of malignant cases,84 cases of Basal cell carcinoma, 54 were men and 30 were women. Confirmatory histopathological re-evaluation of some or incomplete information was done, full information has been taken directly from report and the information was arranged in an informative formula sheet which includes, age, gender, anatomical site of tumor, tumor type and tumor size. Results: In this study the percentage of basal cell carcinoma in relation to the total number is (1.3%), the results showed that 54 (64.3%) were men and 30 (35.7%) were women and the mean age of these patients was (69.9) years. Among basal cell carcinoma lesions, 28 cases were pigmented type, 18 cases were nodular type, 14 cases were ulcerated type, 10 cases were plaque type, 9 cases were basosqumous type and 5 cases were unclear. Conclusion: The present study revealed significant differences in age between male and female, also most basal cell carcinoma lesions were located on the head and neck area.

Background: CK18 is an epithelial-specific cytokeratin that undergoes cleavage by caspases during apoptosis. In a variety of organs, the expression of distinct intermediary filaments is associated with patient prognosis. Intermediary filaments are involved in cell motility and cancer progression. Objective: To evaluate the expression of cytokeratin18 in head and neck Squamous cell carcinoma and to correlate the expression of Ck18 with different parameters such as age , gender and grading of tumor. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients with histopathological proven and surgically treated head and neck squamous cell carcinomas were investigated for the immunohistochemical expression of Ck18. Correlations between clinicopathological features and the expression of Ck18 were evaluated statistically by Chi-square test and the level of significance was 0.05 (two-sided) in all statistical testing. Results: Among patients 16 were males, 14 were female's patient, aged between 14 and 80 years (mean age 56 years) were evaluated. Out of the 30 specimens of the Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma studied, 23 cases (76.7%) showed positive CK 18 staining and 7 cases (23.3%) showed negative CK18 staining. Regarding to gender, in males 6 (37.5%) sections with weak positive expression, 1 (6.25%) sections with moderate positive expression, 3 (18.75%) sections with strong positive expression and 6 (37.5%) section with negative expression, While in females 7(50%) sections with weak positive expression, 3 (21.43%) sections with moderate and strong positive expression and only one (7.14%) section with negative expression. Conclusion: CK 18 showed higher expression levels on moderately and poorly differentiated squamous Cell Carcinoma cases than well differentiated SCC cases. The correlation between CK-18 staining and grade level was non-significant that seemed to be going together with the pleomorphism and the number of mitosis.
