Coronavirus infection (COVID-19) caused by the new coronavirus SARSCoV-2 is a global public health problem. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is low-cost, safe, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulating, and has viral load-reducing effects when taken as a supplement. In addition, vitamin C neutralizes free radicals and protects the body against cellular damage, and it can provide a protective effect against cardiovascular diseases by regulating the production of free radicals via nitric oxide. This situation makes ascorbic acid a notable treatment candidate for preventing the worsening of COVID-19. In our case, we present a patient who had a brief psychotic episode following ingestion of high-dose vitamin C due to fear of getting infected with SARS-CoV-2. The psychotic episode may have developed due to increased levels of circulating vitamin C in the central nervous system, which may affect dopamine and GABA levels and changes in NMDA receptor function in the brain. We aim to draw attention to possible neurotoxicity and inflammation caused by free radicals on neuropsychiatric diseases. [ Psychiatr Ann . 2022;52(10):442–444.]

Organic brain disturbances particularly related to frontal cortex structures and subcortical areas including the basal ganglia may play a role in behavioral disinhibition disorders. Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS), which is one of the better knowns of these syndromes, includes hyperorality, visual agnosia, and hypersexuality, has been reported to occur after temporal lobe and amygdala lesions; however, several patients who had focal lesions in areas other than the temporal cortex and amygdala have been reported to present partial KBS symptoms. Nucleus lentiformis refers to a large portion of the basal ganglia including the putamen and globus pallidus, and specific structures within this broad area are known to be important for reward and value-based decision making. To date, KBS symptoms including hypersexual behavior associated with nucleus lentiformis lesions have never been reported. Here, we present a 38-year-old male patient who developed increased sexual interest and hyperorality after infarctions in the right lenticular nucleus and right occipitotemporal region and committed a first-degree sexual assault. He was sent to our institution for the assessment of criminal responsibility to the index sexual crime. According to a comprehensive and thorough forensic psychiatric evaluation, he was diagnosed as having an organic personality disorder with partial KBS symptoms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of deviant sexual behavior and hyperorality developing after nucleus lentiformis infarction. We aimed to discuss possible neurobiologic explanations of late-onset deviant sexual behavior, which resulted in sexual criminal behavior following a cerebrovascular infarction.

İnceleyeceğimiz ‘Germinal’ ve ‘Sevgili Arsız Ölüm’ adlı eserlerdeki metinlerde, yeni bir kimlik elde etme çabasında olan Etienne Lantier ve Huvat Aktaş karakterleri üzerinden kimlik arayışı irdelenecektir. Aynı zamanda, eserlerdeki sosyal çevre değişiminin insan yaşamı üzerindeki etkisi de gösterilecektir. Purpose of the study; The aim of this study is to mutually reveal the effect of the transition from one social environment to another on the cultural and spiritual alienation of the individual, and the identity struggle of the individual against the differences that arise when the absence and unsettled self change the social environment in which the individual is located. The search for identity will be examined through the characters of Etienne Lantier and Huvat Aktaş, who try to obtain a new identity, in the texts of the works named ‘Germinal’ and ‘Sevgili Arsız Ölüm’ that we will examine. At the same time, the effect of the social environment change in the works on human life will be shown, too.

In highly loaded communication scenarios where turnaround times are high, as in high frequency (HF) environments, time division multiple access (TDMA) media access control (MAC) approach is preferred. In this approach, time synchronization of all network participants is of crucial importance. This study presents model based design of a time synchronization protocol and evaluate its performance in challenging HF communication conditions in MATLAB Simulink environment. The simulation results show that under moderate conditions with random packet losses in "good" states and burst packet losses in "bad" states, the nodes in the network successfully synchronize, even with the worst-case initial conditions of time offsets.

İçinde yaşadığımız güvensizlik koşullarının kaynaklarının neler olduğunu ortaya koymak ve bunlara karşı uygulanabilir bir çözümü Bauman’ın sosyal teorisinden hareketle temellendirmek araştırmanın amacını oluşturmaktadır. Nitel bir araştırma yapılmıştır ve doküman incelemesi yöntemine özellikle de eleştirel söylem analizine müracaat edilmiştir. Güvensizliğin üç türünün olduğu ve bunların da belirsizlik, güvensizlik ve emniyetsizlik şeklinde sınıflandırılabileceği anlaşılmıştır. Bahsedilen güvensizlik türlerinin kaynağının bilgi ve iktidarın uluslararası alandaki hareketi olduğu, bu iki iktidar türüne karşılık politik iktidarın ulusal sınırlar içerisinde kaldığı ve bundan dolayı onlara karşılı etkili önlemler alamadığı tespit edilmiştir. Bilginin ve özellikle sermayenin uluslararası alandaki hareketine karşı etkili önlemler alamayan politik iktidarın, kendisine tabi olanlar üzerindeki meşruiyetini daha fazla zedelememek için bir şeyler yapıyor görünmeye çalıştığı bundan dolayı da bütün güvensizlik türlerini tek bir bileşene, emniyetsizlik’e kaydettiği anlaşılmıştır. Belirsizlik ve güvensizlik’in doğurduğu risklere karşı bütün tehditleri emniyetsizlik’e yıkan politik iktidarın belirleyici niteliğinin, bekçi devleti haline dönüşmek olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Oysa politik iktidarların daha etkili önlemler almaları bunun için de bir araya gelerek uluslararası yasama, yürütme ve yargı organlarını içeren bir küresel cumhuriyet rejimini tesis etmeleri gerektiği anlaşılmıştır. Bir başka yönetim tarzının değil de cumhuriyet’in tercih edilmesinin sebebinin de karşılaşılan sorunların müzakareye dayalı olarak çözülmesine imkân sunmasından kaynaklandığı belirlenmiştir. Müzakere kültürünün gelişmesi için de sosyal medya imkânlarının yeni kamusal alanlar olarak görülmeleri gerektiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır., Целью исследования является выявление источников небезопасных условий, в которых мы живем и нахождение жизнеспособного решения против них на основе социальной теории Баумана. Было проведено качественное исследование и применены методы анализа документов, в частности анализ критического дискурса. Было выявлено, что существует три типа недоверия: неопределенность, опасность и ненадежность. Было установлено, что источником упомянутых типов недоверия является разная информация и действие власти на международной арене, при том, когда политическая власть остается в пределах национальных границ и не может принимать эффективные меры против них. Политическая власть, которая не может принять эффективные меры против распространения разного вида международной информационной войны и нажима капитала из вне, старается, что-то сделать, для того, чтобы не нанести ещё больший ущерб его законности в отношении тех, кто ему доверяет. В связи с этим, власть старается снести все вышеуказанные три компонента в одно понятие, как опасность. Было установлено, что определяющим признаком политической власти, которая уничтожает все угрозы в отношении рисков, вызванных неопределенностью и небезопасностью, является государство, обеспечивающее толбко общественную безопасность. Однако стало ясно, что политическим правительствам необходимо принимать более эффективные меры для объединения усилий и установления глобального режима у себя в стране, которая присоединена к международным законодательствам, исполнительным и судебным органам. Сама форма республиканского правления заключается в том, что она приводит к решению возникающих проблем на основе переговоров. Делается вывод о том, что возможности социальных сетей следует рассматривать как новые публичные пространства для развития культуры переговоров., The purpose of the research is to reveal the sources of the insecurity conditions we live in and to base a viable solution forward against them from Bauman's social theory. A qualitative research was carried out and it was applied to the method of document analysis, especially critical discourse analysis. It is understood that there are three types of insecurity and they can be classified as uncertainty, insecurity and unsafety. It has been determined that the source of the mentioned types of insecurity is the movement of knowledge and power in the international arena, that political power remains within the national boundaries therefore cannot take effective measures against them. It was understood that political power, which could not take effective measures against the international movement of knowledge and especially capital, is trying to seem to be doing things not to damage its legitimacy on them, therefore it saves all types of insecurity to a single component, unsafety. It has been determined that the determining feature of the political power, which against risks caused by uncertainty and insecurity charges all threats to unsafety, is to become a guard state. However, it has been understood that political governments need to take more effective measures to come together and establish a global republic regime that includes international legislative, executive and judicial bodies. It was determined that the reason why the republic was preferred, rather than any other form of administration, was that it provided the possibility of resolving problems to be on negotiation. It was concluded that social media should be seen as new public spaces for the development of the negotiation culture.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate a sample of suicide attempters regarding temperament and character dimension scores and compare them with psychiatrically healthy individuals considering the influence of demographic risk factors. Methods: This study enrolled consecutive 50 patients (39 women, 11 men) with a mean age of 24.12 (SD ± 8.83) years who were admitted to the Emergency Department of Bezmialem Vakif University hospital for a recent self – or not self-reported suicide attempt. The control group consisted of age – and gendermatched 50 healthy subjects (34 women, 11 men) who had not a documented axis I psychiatric disorder or a previous suicide attempt with a mean age of 26.46 (SD ± 5.6). A semi-structured sociodemographic and clinical data form, Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV axis I disorders (SCID-I), and the Turkish version of Temperament and Character Inventory (Turkish-TCI) were administered to all participants. Following screening of all variables for the accuracy of data entry, missing values, and homoscedasticity, statistical analyses were performed by using SPSS version 23 for Windows. Results: A statistically significant difference was found between the patients and psychiatrically healthy controls mean values in terms of Impulsiveness and Disorderliness subscales of Novelty Seeking; Harm Avoidance and its all subscales, Sentimentality subscale of Reward Dependence; Self-Transcendence and its subscales of Self-Forgetfulness, Transpersonal Identification and Spiritual Acceptance scores were significantly higher in patients with suicide attempt compared to the control group. Patient group also exhibited significantly lower mean values of Self-Directedness, Persistence, and Cooperativeness scales compared to the psychiatrically healthy controls. Conclusions: In conclusion, our results suggested that patients with a history of suicide attempts have abnormal TCI profiles linked to higher harm avoidance, novelty seeking and self-transcendence scores and lower self-directedness and cooperativeness scores compared to psychiatrically healthy controls. Since personality traits play an important role in the prediction of suicidality, clinicians should be aware of personality–psychopathology relations for assessment and developing treatment strategies of the patients with suicide attempt.

United States air transportation contributes to the economy of the country by facilitating the mobility of people and goods. Air transportation is one of the essential systems in the US and the world. In this study, we investigate the dynamics of US air transportation from three angles (i.e., number of flights, number of passengers, and the amount of freight carried) at three levels of airport, city, and state. While there are unique dynamics at each, there is a strong fluctuation in the activity of the links, indicating a highly dynamic system. Backbone analyses of the networks also show that there are specific periods (such as 2007 for flights, 2008 for freight, and 2012 for passengers) in which network changes drastically.

Seçimin, zenginliğin, cömertliğin, bilgi ve becerinin, uzlaşının, iyi bir hitabete sahip olmanın bu topluluklardaki şeflik kurumunun meşruiyetinin temelinde yatan şeyler oldukları anlaşılmıştır. Dahası zenginliğin kökeninde yer alan hediye-karşı hediye’nin hem Bourdieu’nun hem de Baudrillard’ın modern toplumlara dair tartışmalarında yine iktidar eksenli olarak kullanıldıklarına değinilmiştir. Bilgi ile iktidar arasındaki ilişkinin uzun soluklu olduğunu göstermek için de Sümer toplumuna, Antik Yunan uygarlığına ve Foucault’nun teorisine kısaca yer verilmiştir. Yerliler arasında iktidarın meşruiyetini sağlayan gerekçelerin birçoğunun dönüşmüş halleriyle bugün bile geçerli olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Geleneksel, modern ve postmodern dönemde yaşamın hangi ilkelerden hareketle dizayn edildiğini, yaşam tarzlarının hangi değerlere bağlı olarak temellendirildiğini göstermek araştırmanın amacını oluşturmaktadır. Bunu tespit etmek için kullandığımız yöntem, doküman incelenmesi özelde de içerik analizi olmuştur. Geleneksel dönemde yaşam tarzlarının temellendiricisinin dini söylem, modern dönemde tekil bir hakikat, postmodern dönemde ise hakikatlerin çoğulluğu olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Tekil bir hakikat anlayışından çoğulcu hakikatlere geçişin farklı yaşam tarzlarının gelişmesi açısından bir fırsat sunduğu fakat diğer yandan dikkat edilmemesi durumunda bir rölativizm tehlikesi doğurduğu anlaşılmıştır. Rölativizmin neden olduğu zayıflatıcı etkilere karşı herkesin anlaşabileceği temel ilkelerin tespit edilmesi gerektiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır., The aim of this research is to show that life is designed in the traditional, modern and postmodern period from what principles and the lifestyles are based on what values. The method we use to determine this has been document analysis and content analysis in particular. It has been determined that the basis of lifestyles in the traditional period is religious discourse, a single truth in the modern period and the plurality of truths in the postmodern period. It has been understood that the transition from a single understanding of truth to the pluralistic truths provides an opportunity for the development of different lifestyles, but on the other hand causes a danger of relativism if not observed. It is concluded that the basic principles that can be understood by everyone should be determined against the weakening effects caused by relativism.

Özet Özel gazete ve polisiye romanın ülkemize yeni girdiği dönmede, her birinin diğerini destekleme ihtiyacını beraberinde getirmiş ve karşılıklı bir yarar ortaya çıkmıştır. Polisiye romanlar gazetenin önemine değinerek onun toplumu bilgilendiren ve yeni haberleri aktaran bir araç olduğunu vurgularken, gazeteler, okuyucunun ilgisini çekmek için polisiye romanları bölümler halinde yayımlamışlardır.Polisiye romanlar da gazetenin toplum için ne kadar önemli olduğunu kurguları içerisinde göstermeye çalışmışlar, halkın gazetelere güven duymasında önemli bir görev üstlenmişlerdir.Günümüzde gazeteler baskı sayılarını artırmak amacıyla polisiye diziler yayımlama kaygısı gütmeden, asli görevleri olan edebiyat, fikir, kültür, sanat, siyasal, politik ve güncel olaylardan halkı haberdar etmek olan asli görevlerine dönmüşlerdir. Abstract When the private newspapers and the detective novel emerged in our country, it brought the necessity of supporting each other and a mutual benefit emerged. While the detective novels emphasized the importance of journalism and emphasized that it was a vehicle that informed society and conveyed new news, newspapers published detective novels in chapters to attract readers' attention.Detective novels have tried to show how important journalism is for the society in their fiction, and they have undertaken an important role in making the people trust journalism.Nowadays, without publishing new detective series newspapers have returned to their primary duty which is to inform the public about their main tasks: literary, intellectual, cultural, artistic, political, political and current events, without worrying about increasing the number of their prints. OBJECTIVE: In this present study, we aimed to examine the relationship between particular traumatic past experiences and clinical features of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in an outpatient sample from Turkey. Overt or unknown childhood traumas were also examined as a robust risk factor that might affect the development of PTSD in this population. METHODS: The sample of this study was composed of 100 female patients with a history of traumatic experiences and with a documented psychiatric diagnosis except PTSD who were admitted to Health Sciences University’s Bagcilar Training and Research Hospital Outpatient Clinic. Semi-structured sociodemographic data form, Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I), Clinician-Administered Posttraumatic Disorder Scale (CAPS) and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-28) were administered. Semi-structured sociodemographic form, were applied to the participants. Following clinical interviews and CAPS application, the patients were divided into two subgroups as patients with or without the diagnosis of current PTSD. Following screening of all variables for the accuracy of data entry, missing values, and homoscedasticity, statistical analyses were performed by using SPSS version 23 for Windows. RESULTS: The CTQ total scores (U = 233.000, z = −6.856, p = 0.000) and also Emotional Abuse (U = 235.000, z = −6.941, p = 0.000), Physical Abuse (U = 185.000, z = −7.424, p = 0.000), Emotional Neglect (U = 244.000, z = −6.851, p = 0.000), Physical Neglect (U = 208.000, z = −7.276, p = 0.000) and Sexual Abuse (U = 266.000, z = −7.554 p = 0.000) subscale scores were significantly higher in the PTSD present group. A statistically significant association was found between CAPS Total scores and Emotional Abuse (r = 0.870, p < 0.01), Physical Abuse (r = 0.879, p < 0.01), Emotional Neglect (r = 0.862, p < 0.01), Physical Neglect (r = 0.884, p < 0.01) and Sexual Abuse (r = 0.886, p < 0.01) subscale scores, and CTQ Total (r = 0.906, p < 0.01) scores. The regression analysis has indicated that CTQ Sexual Abuse scores were significant predictors of CAPS Total scores (p = 0.00) in patients with traumatic experiences when age was controlled. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to the sociodemographic risk factors, traumatic experiences of childhood are important risk factors for PTSD. Man-made traumas such as rape, assault have a higher risk and symptom severity than natural disasters and traffic accidents for PTSD. Our results suggested a strong association between childhood sexual trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder. © 2018, © 2018 The Author(s). Hyponatremia can cause many psychiatric symptoms besides the main clinical presentation. Among inpatient population, hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte imbalance and syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) is the one of main causes of hyponatremia in this population. In elderly patients with no history of psychiatric illness, the possibility of having organic etiology should be considered when mania occurred. Here, we present a 65-year-old woman who had no known psychiatric diagnosis or treatment history and was diagnosed with first manic episode which was considered to be related hyponatremia led by SIADH. In light of the observation that mania symptoms were improved with aripiprazole treatment, we discuss possible benefits of aripiprazole in patients with secondary mania.

Objectives: Tinnitus is a common symptom in adults and is more common after 50 years of age. In many cases, tinnitus is associated with psychological and psychosomatic problems caused by emotional and cognitive dysfunction, in addition to classical symptoms. Patients with depressive and anxiety disorder were reported to be at high risk for the development of severe tinnitus. However, childhood trauma is also reported to be a risk factor for depressive and anxiety disorders. The role of childhood traumas in the development of psychiatric symptoms is clear. This causality requires investigation of childhood traumatic experiences in individuals with tinnitus. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between childhood traumatic experiences, tinnitus, and depression and anxiety symptoms. In addition, the patient group with tinnitus symptoms and the control group consisting of healthy individuals were compared in the context of related parameters. Material and methods: One hundred and two patients who had complaints of tinnitus for more than six months and 90 healthy volunteers between the ages of 18 and 35 were included in the study. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were filled in by both the study and the control groups. The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) was performed only in the tinnitus study group. Results: The findings showed significant differences between the two groups. The study demonstrated that patients with tinnitus had significantly higher depression and anxiety scores than those healthy controls. However, in the group with tinnitus, childhood emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional neglect, and physical neglect scores were significantly higher than in the healthy group. When the group with tinnitus was evaluated within itself, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between THI and physical abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect, BDI, and BAI. Patients with tinnitus had more family history of migration and early parental loss and lower income status than the control group. Conclusion: These findings may indicate the presence of a causal relationship between tinnitus and its severity and childhood traumatic experiences. Childhood traumatic experiences may have made individuals prone to developing tinnitus, depression, and anxiety. In our study, patients with tinnitus had more family history of migration and early parental loss and lower income status than the control group. These factors may have exposed individuals in the patient group to more traumatic experiences. Trauma-oriented psychotherapies may be useful for patients with tinnitus to process trauma memories, manage trauma-related symptoms, and deal with depression and anxiety symptoms.

Vigabatrin is an antiepileptic that functions by increasing ɣ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in the brain. Like other antiepileptics, it also causes neuropsychiatric side effects. Among these side effects, psychosis draws particular attention. Drug-induced psychosis has been reported in previous publications at the beginning of the drug, while psychosis reports during the cessation period are limited. We discussed the possible mechanisms of psychosis that can be seen in the use of vigabatrin in the light of the assumptions that GABA, glutamate and dopamine are involved in the formation of positive symptoms in psychosis.

Background: A possible relationship between major depressive disorder (MDD) and, childhood traumatic experiences and dissociation has been proposed. This study assesses childhood traumatic experiences, the dissociative, depressive, and anxiety symptoms in patients with MDD, and aims to question the reality of dissociative depression Methods: The 99 psychotropic drug-naive patients participating in the study met the DSM-V criteria for MDD. Dissociation Questionnaire (DIS-Q), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) were applied. Results: The patients were divided into two groups using the DIS-Q (DIS-Q < 2.5 and DIS-Q ≥ 2.5) and the groups were compared. The study demonstrated that patients with high dissociative scores return significantly higher depression and anxiety scores than those with low dissociation and that the high dissociative group returned elevated emotional, sexual, and physical abuse scores compared to the low dissociative group. In the logistic regression analysis, the onset age of MDD (< 30 years), BDI, and BAI scores (scores ≥30) increased the participants’ likelihood of having DIS-Q ≥ 2.5. Conclusions: Results suggest that dissociative symptomatology in MDD may about early-onset age of MDD, childhood traumatic experiences, and severity level of both depression and anxiety. The clinician should carefully consider whether dissociation is a concomitant condition or a significant problem when working with patients with both depression and dissociation. However, clinicians should not neglect the underlying childhood traumatic experiences among these patients.
