Abstract

This paper investigates the commutation transients of MOSFET and GaN FET devices in motor drive applications during hard-switching and soft-switching commutations at dead time operation. This study compares the switching behaviors of MOSFETs and GaN FETs, focusing on their performance during dead time in inverter legs for voltage source inverters. Experimental tests at various phase current levels reveal distinct switching characteristics and energy dissipation patterns. A validated simulation model estimates the experimental energy exchanged and dissipated during switching transients. The results demonstrate that GaN FETs exhibit lower overall losses at shorter dead times compared to MOSFETs, despite higher reverse conduction voltage drops. The study provides a quantitative framework for selecting optimal dead times to minimize energy losses, enhancing the efficiency of GaN FET-based inverters in low-voltage motor drive applications. Abstract

The paper explores the use of the magnetic control strategy for the output power regulation of an LCC‐S compensated inductive wireless power transfer system. The magnetic control is implemented through a controlled variable inductor whose magnetization state is actively regulated by an auxiliary DC–DC converter. The principles for the design and regulation of the system are discussed, and the experimental setup for the validation of the regulation method is implemented. Several measurement results highlight the effectiveness and potential improvements of the magnetic control strategy for inductive wireless power transfer systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

33. Optimal Air Gap Length Design in Powder Core Inductors

Abstract

The main requirements of magnetic components for power electronics applications are high power density and low power losses, driven by the need for more compact and more efficient power converters. Metal powder materials are a common choice for high-power and high-frequency inductors subject to a large magnetic field bias, since they feature high saturation flux density and low magnetic permeability (i.e., a “distributed” air gap), allowing for the adoption of un-gapped cores. Despite this, under high values of magnetomotive force (i.e., deep core magnetic saturation), the insertion of a concentrated air gap can lead to higher core inductance factor values with respect to an un-gapped configuration. In this context, this article proposes a straightforward procedure to maximize the inductance factor of metal powder magnetic cores by identifying the optimal air gap length for a specified design operating point. In particular, the procedure completely relies on information available in the core manufacturer’s datasheet and does not require experimental characterization of the core itself, dramatically simplifying the inductor design procedure. The proposed methodology is theoretically described and then experimentally validated on an XFlux 60 core from Magnetics.

39. Passive and Active Topologies Investigation for LED Driver Circuits

Abstract

In this chapter, a survey of LED driver circuits is presented. The driver circuit is a crucial component in the LED light system. It provides the correct voltage and current values for the best brightness and long life. Furthermore, the driver circuits contribute to obtaining high efficiency and reliability light system. Several lighting applications need different driver topologies that meet the use requirement and the energy sources available. In actual applications, passive and active circuits are implemented to satisfy the LED driver electrical requirements and cost-effective demands. The LED driver circuits investigation evaluate the issues and the solutions in the LED lighting systems connected to a DC source such as a battery or AC line. The AC line connection requisites such as the power factor correction and the harmonic distortion are dealt with both the driver topology and control optimization. Also, the volume reduction need is examined in the circuitry choice. Moreover, the different topologies of the power converters isolated and not isolated used in the driver circuits based on both the power request and supply source are described and critically evaluated.
