We conducted a systematic review of analytical epidemiological studies to assess the association between ChAdOx1-S vaccination and thromboembolic, thrombocytopenic, and hemorrhagic events. We searched Medline, Embase, Google Scholar, WHO-COVID-19 database, and medRxiv for studies evaluating the association between ChAdOx1-S and vascular events. Primary outcomes of interest were cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, peripheral venous thrombosis (PVT), and thrombocytopenia. Two independent reviewers screened for eligible studies, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. The DerSimonian-Laird random effects model was used to pool the incidence rate ratios (IRRs) separately for the first and second doses. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 statistics. Twenty studies were included, of which 11 were self-controlled case series, and nine were cohort studies (254 million participants). Pooling of 17 studies showed a higher risk of cerebrovascular thrombosis (IRR = 3.5, 95% CI = 2.2–5.4, I2 = 79%), PVT (IRR = 2.0, 95% CI = 1.1–3.5, I2 = 95%) and thrombocytopenia (IRR = 1.6, 95% CI = 1.4–1.9, I2 = 93%) among those who received ChAdOx1-S vaccination as compared to controls. No increased risk was seen after the second dose or for secondary outcomes. There is moderate-to-high certainty of the evidence for the increased risk of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, PVT, and thrombocytopenia following the first dose of the ChAdOx1-S vaccine. Dried blood spot (DBS) collection provides an easy, practical, and acceptable alternative to venous blood collection, especially for community-based studies, provided that results from DBS are accurate. We demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity for measles- and rubella-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) with DBS collected via HemaSpot HF devices compared to serum samples.

A new species of the jumping spider genus Carrhotus Thorell – Carrhotus piperus sp. nov. – is described based on the male holotype collected from Tamil Nadu, India. Detailed description and illustrations are provided. The new species can be separated from the closely related taxa by the prolateral protrusion of the bulb arising from an 8 o’clock position and directed dorsad, and the retrolaterally directed beak-shaped embolus. The number of known Carrhotus species reaches to 10 and 37 in India and in the world, respectively. A key to species of the genus Carrhotus from India is also presented.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco claims over 8 million lives, with over 80% of the 1.3 billion users residing in low- and middle-income nations. India ranks highest in the proportion of users globally, notably in the Northeastern states. This paper aims to analyze the overall trends of smoking and smokeless tobacco (SLT) in the Northeast Region (NER) of India between the two rounds of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) while analyzing the factors influencing tobacco used in the context of the region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Descriptive analysis, estimation, and comparison of the prevalence of smoking and SLT were conducted for both rounds of GATS. The Chi-square test was employed to examine the association between variables such as gender, age, residence, education level, occupation, marital status, and caste while adjusting for GATS weight. RESULTS: The prevalence of smoking tobacco in GATS-II in NER is 19.3%, a decrease of 12% from GATS-I. While the use of manufactured cigarettes decreased by 33.7%, the use of bidi smoking and rolled tobacco in paper/leaf increased by 15.9% and 9.2%, respectively. The prevalence of SLT in GATS-II was 40.5%, a significant increase of 17% from GATS-I. While both genders exhibited increased tobacco usage, females experienced a particularly significant rise (18%) between the two survey rounds. No formal schooling, gender, rural residence, older age group, and occupation were significant factors in influencing the increased use of SLT. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of SLT consumption in the NER is on the rise, even as overall trends indicate a decrease in smoking tobacco. To effectively address this issue, tobacco should be integrated as a crosscutting concern across all levels of health programs. Multisectoral collaborations involving communities and schools can achieve regulatory and meaningful reductions in tobacco use.

PurposeOut-of-school adolescent girls (OoSGs) can lack education on menstrual, sexual, reproductive, and mental health (SRMH) and be more vulnerable to SRMH harms. Targeted interventions could reduce these risks. We assessed interventions and their effectiveness among OoSGs globally.MethodsSix online databases were searched for interventional studies targeting SRMH problems in OoSGs. Two coders independently abstracted data from each eligible study, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We summarized results using forest plots.ResultsA total of 1,244 studies were screened; eight studies with sufficient information on SRMH outcomes were included (9,084 OoSGs, range 100–3,026 per study, overall study quality low-to-moderate). Six were educational programmes, and two were cash interventions; no study was directed at mental health. Participants were recruited through village census, outreach workers, and work locations. Some improvements were seen in indicators of SRMH knowledge (four studies), attitudes (one study), and risky sexual behaviors (four studies); however, no reduction was seen in human immunodeficiency virus or herpes simplex virus-2 incidence (two studies).DiscussionThis review suggests that programmes can improve OosG’s SRMH knowledge, attitudes, and practices and can be delivered in low resource contexts. Effective interventions are needed to support OoSGs, including interventions focusing on SRMH support incorporating elements of cash-transfer, and comprehensive sexual education, and to aid local policy and programming.

Background: On January 30, 2023, 26 acute diarrheal disease (ADD) cases and a death were reported from a village in Dibrugarh, Assam, India. We investigated and described the outbreak by time, place and person, identified the potential exposures, and formulated recommendations. Methods: We defined a case of ADD as the occurrence of loose stools (≥3 episodes) between January 27, 2023 and February 11, 2023. We conducted a door-to-door case search, calculated attack rates by age and gender, drew an epidemic curve, and plotted cases by residence. We performed a case-control study to identify possible exposure variables, calculated odds ratio (OR) with 95 % confidence interval (CI), and collected stool and water specimens from households and schools for laboratory testing. Results: We identified a total of 55 cases, with an overall attack rate of 5.6 % and one death (case fatality rate of 1.8 %). School-going children exhibited a higher attack rate of 39 %. Shigella flexneri was isolated from one of the stool specimens. Furthermore, the water obtained from households' tube wells exceeded the permissible limits of E. coli for consumption. Consuming prasadam (Sacred food) at a school religious event (OR = 6.2, 95 % CI = 2.6–15.2) and not washing hands after defecation (OR = 8.2, 95 % CI = 1.7–38) were associated with ADD. Conclusion: The results indicated that the food served during the school religious event could potentially be the source of the ADD outbreak. The food served during the event likely acted as a medium for community transmission, possibly due to unhygienic practices and contaminated drinking water.

Incorporating C4 photosynthetic traits into C3 crops is a rational approach for sustaining future demands for crop productivity. Using classical plant breeding, engineering this complex trait is unlikely to achieve its target. Therefore, it is critical and timely to implement novel biotechnological crop improvement strategies to accomplish this goal. However, a fundamental understanding of C3, C4, and C3–C4 intermediate metabolism is crucial for the targeted use of biotechnological tools. This review assesses recent progress towards engineering C4 photosynthetic traits in C3 crops. We also discuss lessons learned from successes and failures of recent genetic engineering attempts in C3 crops, highlighting the pros and cons of using rice as a model plant for short‐, medium‐ and long‐term goals of genetic engineering. This review provides an integrated approach towards engineering improved photosynthetic efficiency in C3 crops for sustaining food, fibre and fuel production around the globe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Steady photolyses using low-pressure mercury pen-ray lamp was used in a novel design of synthesizing s-triazolo{3,4-b}benzothiazole as well as inanalyzing the mechanism governing the benzothiazole formation. The method featured the use of triazole-3-thiones as starting materials from which s-triazolo{3,4-b}benzothiazoles were derived through photochemical method. It was found that the changes observed in the isosbestic points suggested a multistep characteristic and secondary photolysis.

Tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze] is an important crop cultivated in all over the world. The main problem in tea cultivation is the attack by a bug called Helopeltis theivora. Many different strategies, such as the use of pesticides and insecticides, have been developed to prevent pest attacks on tea crops. However, most pesticides and insecticides are also hazardous to the environment. Therefore, biopesticides can be used as alternatives to chemical pesticides to prevent pest attacks on crops. Chitinase is an important biopesticide owing to its ability to prevent pest growth. Hence, this enzyme could be used to target H. theivora by attacking C. sinensis. The present study involved in silico docking and binding analysis of a chitinase from Pseudomonas fluorescens MP-13 with glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) from H. theivora. The secondary structures of chitinase and GAPDH were determined using SOPMA, and their three-dimensional structures were modeled using the Swiss model and validated using PROCHECK and Ramachandran plots. Chitinase and GAPDH were docked using HADDOCK docking software. Docking studies governed a HADDOCK docking score of -125.8, which showed good binding between the two proteins. The amino acid residues involved in binding were analyzed using PDBSum and the final docked structure was visualized using PyMol. Furthermore, in molecular dynamics studies, the binding region between chitinase and GAPDH residues was intact and stable, and did not detach throughout the simulation duration. It is clearly evidenced that chitinase from P. fluorescens and GAPDH from H. theivora interacted well with each other, thereby improves the chitinase's ability to target H. theivora and hence, chitinase can be used as a potent biopesticide. However, a detailed molecular functional and experimental studies are mandates to confirm the role of P. fluorescens in regulation of H. theivora.

Leprosy (Hansen’s disease) is an infectious, neglected tropical disease caused by the Mycobacterium Leprae (M. Leprae). About 2,02,189 new cases are diagnosed worldwide each year. Lepra reactions are an off shoot of leprosy infection causing major nerve damage leading to disability. Early detection of lepra reactions through the study of biomarkers can prevent subsequent disabilities. Motivated by these observations, in this study, we have proposed and analyzed a three-dimensional mathematical model to capture the dynamics of susceptible schwann cells, infected schwann cells, and the bacterial load based on the pathogenesis of leprosy. We did the stability analysis, numerical simulations, and also performed the sensitivity analysis using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, partial rank correlation coefficient, and Sobol’s index methods. We later performed the optimal control studies with both multi-drug therapy and steroid interventions as control variables. Finally, we did the comparative and effectiveness study of these different control interventions.

In this paper, one of the great challenges faced by silicon-based biosensors is resolved using a biomaterial multilayer. Tiny biomolecules are deposited on silicon substrates, producing devices that have the ability to act as iridescent color sensors. The color is formed by a coating of uniform microstructures through the interference of light. The system exploits a flat, RNA-aptamer-coated silicon-based surface to which captured microbes are covalently attached. Silicon surfaces are encompassed with the layer-by-layer deposition of biomolecules, as characterized by atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, the results demonstrate an application of an RNA aptamer chip for sensing a specific bacterium. Interestingly, the detection limit for the microbe was observed to be 2 × 106 CFUmL−1 by visually observed color changes, which were confirmed further using UV-Vis reflectance spectrophotometry. In this report, a flexible method has been developed for the detection of the pathogen Sphingobium yanoikuyae, which is found in non-beverage alcohols. The optimized system is capable of detecting the specific target microbe. The simple concept of these iridescent color changes is mainly derived from the increase in thickness of the nano-ordered layers.

BackgroundIn alignment with the Measles and Rubella (MR) Strategic Elimination plan, India conducted a mass measles and rubella vaccination campaign across the country between 2017 and 2020 to provide a dose of MR containing vaccine to all children aged 9 months to 15 years. We estimated campaign vaccination coverage in five districts in India and assessed campaign awareness and factors associated with vaccination during the campaign to better understand reasons for not receiving the dose.Methods and findingsCommunity-based cross-sectional serosurveys were conducted in five districts of India among children aged 9 months to 15 years after the vaccination campaign. Campaign coverage was estimated based on home-based immunization record or caregiver recall. Campaign coverage was stratified by child- and household-level risk factors and descriptive analyses were performed to assess reasons for not receiving the campaign dose. Three thousand three hundred and fifty-seven children aged 9 months to 15 years at the time of the campaign were enrolled. Campaign coverage among children aged 9 months to 5 years documented or by recall ranged from 74.2% in Kanpur Nagar District to 90.4% in Dibrugarh District, Assam. Similar coverage was observed for older children. Caregiver awareness of the campaign varied from 88.3% in Hoshiarpur District, Punjab to 97.6% in Dibrugarh District, Assam, although 8% of children whose caregivers were aware of the campaign were not vaccinated during the campaign. Failure to receive the campaign dose was associated with urban settings, low maternal education, and lack of school attendance although the associations varied by district.ConclusionAwareness of the MR vaccination campaign was high; however, campaign coverage varied by district and did not reach the elimination target of 95% coverage in any of the districts studied. Areas with lower coverage among younger children must be prioritized by strengthening the routine immunization programme and implementing strategies to identify and reach under-vaccinated children.

Abstract Background The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic increased the utilisation of healthcare services. Such utilization could lead to higher out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) and catastrophic health expenditures (CHE). We estimated OOPE and the proportion of households that experienced CHE by conducting a cross-sectional survey of 1200 randomly selected confirmed COVID-19 cases. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted by telephonic interviews of 1200 randomly selected COVID-19 patients who tested positive between 1 March and 31 August 2021. We collected household-level information on demographics, income, expenditure, insurance coverage, direct medical and non-medical costs incurred toward COVID-19 management. We estimated the proportion of CHE with a 95% confidence interval. We examined the association of household characteristics; COVID-19 cases, severity, and hospitalisation status with CHE. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to ascertain the effects of variables of interest on the likelihood that households face CHE due to COVID-19. Results The mean (95%CI) OOPE per household was INR 122,221 (92,744–1,51,698) [US$1,643 (1,247–2,040)]. Among households, 61.7% faced OOPE, and 25.8% experienced CHE due to COVID-19. The odds of facing CHE were high among the households; with a family member over 65 years [OR = 2.89 (2.03–4.12)], with a comorbid individual [OR = 3.38 (2.41–4.75)], in the lowest income quintile [OR = 1.82 (1.12–2.95)], any member visited private hospital [OR = 11.85 (7.68–18.27)]. The odds of having CHE in a household who have received insurance claims [OR = 5.8 (2.81- 11.97)] were high. Households with one and more than one severe COVID-19 increased the risk of CHE by more than two-times and three-times respectively [AOR = 2.67 (1.27–5.58); AOR = 3.18 (1.49–6.81)]. Conclusion COVID-19 severity increases household OOPE and CHE. Strengthening the public healthcare and health insurance with higher health financing is indispensable for financial risk protection of households with severe COVID-19 from CHE.

Abstract Background Help-seeking for intimate partner violence (IPV) requires women to disclose their experiences. For policymakers, low help-seeking threatens the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of gender equality, good health, and wellbeing. In India, the Prevention of Domestic Violence Against Women Act (PWDVA 2005) was implemented in 2006. Using two rounds of the India National Family Health Survey (NFHS), one before and one after implementation, we examined the prevalence, pattern, and sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors associated with formal help-seeking for IPV. Methods We used univariable and multivariable logistic regression models to assess the prevalence of help-seeking for IPV in the past 12 months and examined associations with different forms of IPV and sociodemographic factors. Results The proportion of ever-married women aged 15–49 years who reported physical, sexual, or emotional IPV in the last 12 months increased from 23% in NFHS-3 (2005–2006) to 25% in NFHS-4 (2015–2016). In both surveys, few women sought help. Informal sources of help were preferred over formal sources, which declined from NFHS-3 to NFHS-4 (any help: 24.5 to 13.8%; informal help: 24.1 to 13.4%; and formal help: 1.2 to 1.1%). Women from lower castes and women with children were less likely to seek formal help. Over the two surveys, the odds of formal help-seeking for sexual IPV in the past 12 months remained similar (NFHS-3 aOR 1.9, 95% CI 1.4, 2.5. NFHS-4 aOR 1.9, 95% CI 1.4, 2.6). The odds were slightly higher for emotional IPV (NFHS-3 aOR 2.5, 95% CI 1.8, 3.3. NFHS-4 aOR 2.7, 95% CI 2.0, 3.7) and spousal control (NFHS-3 aOR 2.0, 95% CI 1.4, 3.0. NFHS-4 aOR 2.3, 95% CI: 1.4, 3.7). Conclusions Low disclosure and help-seeking impact a country’s social, cultural, economic, and political progress. The PWDVA did not appear to result in increases in help-seeking among women in India who experienced IPV. Further work is needed to understand barriers to help-seeking in the presence of public policy efforts to support women affected by IPV. These may include poor implementation and enforcement of Policy, as well as normalization and justification of gender-based violence. We recommend a deeper understanding of help-seeking across all systems to establish a barometer of help-seeking. An increase in formal or informal help-seeking is an indicator of reduced tolerance of IPV and the enabling environment of the PWDVA 2005 for tracking progress toward the SDGs of gender equality and the eradication of all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination.
