Purpose: In radiology, large language models (LLMs), including ChatGPT, have recently gained attention, and their utility is being rapidly evaluated. However, concerns have emerged regarding their reliability in clinical applications due to limitations such as hallucinations and insufficient referencing. To address these issues, we focus on the latest technology, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which enables LLMs to reference reliable external knowledge (REK). Specifically, this study examines the utility and reliability of a recently released RAG-equipped LLM (RAG-LLM), NotebookLM, for staging lung cancer. Materials and methods: We summarized the current lung cancer staging guideline in Japan and provided this as REK to NotebookLM. We then tasked NotebookLM with staging 100 fictional lung cancer cases based on CT findings and evaluated its accuracy. For comparison, we performed the same task using a gold-standard LLM, GPT-4 Omni (GPT-4o), both with and without the REK. Results: NotebookLM achieved 86% diagnostic accuracy in the lung cancer staging experiment, outperforming GPT-4o, which recorded 39% accuracy with the REK and 25% without it. Moreover, NotebookLM demonstrated 95% accuracy in searching reference locations within the REK. Conclusion: NotebookLM successfully performed lung cancer staging by utilizing the REK, demonstrating superior performance compared to GPT-4o. Additionally, it provided highly accurate reference locations within the REK, allowing radiologists to efficiently evaluate the reliability of NotebookLM's responses and detect possible hallucinations. The mini proceedings of the "Fourth International Workshop on the Extension Project for the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility (HEF-ex 2024) [https://kds.kek.jp/event/46965]" held at J-PARC, February 19-21, 2024, are presented. The workshop was devoted to discussing the physics case that connects both the present and the future Hadron Experimental Facility at J-PARC, covering a wide range of topics in flavor, hadron, and nuclear physics related to both experimental and theoretical activities being conducted at the facility.

Detection of single-electron charges in solid-state nanodevices is a key technique in semiconductor quantum bit readout for quantum information processing and probing electronic properties of nanostructures. This detection is achieved using quantum dot charge sensors, with its speed enhanced by high-speed RF reflectometry. Recently, real-time processing of data from RF reflectometry has attracted much attention to quantum information processing. In this paper, we propose a sequential method based on Bayes' theorem for estimating the charge state and compare its performance with the averaging approach and threshold judgment. When the noise variance differs between the empty and occupied states, the Bayesian approach demonstrates a lower error score, facilitating the extraction of more data points in real-time charge state estimation. Additionally, the Bayesian approach outperforms the averaging method and threshold judgment in terms of error rates for charge state estimation, even during charge transitions. This technique is broadly applicable to single-electron detection and holds substantial utility for quantum bit readout and the operation of nanoprobes that utilize single-electron detection., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

PDS~70 is a protoplanetary system that hosts two actively accreting gas giants, namely PDS~70b and PDS~70c. The system has a $\sim$60--100 au dusty ring that has been resolved by ALMA, along with circumplanetary disks around the two gas giants. Here we report the first JVLA Q (40--48 GHz), Ka (29--37 GHz), K (18--26 GHz), and X (8--12 GHz) bands continuum observations, and the complementary ALMA Bands 3 ($\sim$98 GHz) and 4 ($\sim$145 GHz) observations towards PDS~70. The dusty ring appears azimuthally asymmetric in our ALMA images. We obtained firm detections at Ka and K bands without spatially resolving the source; we obtained a marginal detection at Q band, and no detection at X band. The spectral indices ($\alpha$) are 5$\pm$1 at 33--44 GHz and 0.6$\pm$0.2 at 22--33 GHz. At 10--22 GHz, the conservative lower limit of $\alpha$ is 1.7. The 33--44 GHz flux density is likely dominated by the optically thin thermal emission of grown dust with $\gtrsim$1 mm maximum grain sizes, which may be associated with the azimuthally asymmetric substructure induced by planet-disk interaction. Since PDS~70 was not detected at X band, we found it hard to explain the low spectral index at 22--33 GHz only with free-free emission. Hence, we attribute the dominant emission at 22--33 GHz to the emission of spinning nanometer-sized dust particles, while free-free emission may partly contribute to emission at this frequency range. In some protoplanetary disks, the emission of spinning nanometer-sized dust particles may resemble the 20--50 GHz excess in the spectra of millimeter-sized dust. The finding of strong continuum emission of spinning nanometer-sized particles can complicate the procedure of constraining the properties of grown dust. Future high-resolution, multi-frequency JVLA/ngVLA and SKA observations may shed light on this issue.

This study proposes an analytical framework for deriving the surface brightness profile and geometry of a geometrically-thin axisymmetric disc from interferometric observation of continuum emission. Such precise modelling facilitates the exploration of faint non-axisymmetric structures, such as spirals and circumplanetary discs. As a demonstration, we simulate interferometric observations of geometrically-thin axisymmetric discs. The proposed method can reasonably recover the injected axisymmetric structures, whereas Gaussian fitting of the same data yielded larger errors in disc orientation estimation. To further test the applicability of the method, it was applied to the mock data for $m=1,2$ spirals and a point source, which are embedded in a bright axisymmetric structure. The injected non-axisymmetric structures were reasonably recovered except for the innermost parts, and the disc geometric parameter estimations were better than Gasussian fitting. The method was then applied to the real data of Elias 20 and AS 209, and it adequately subtracted the axisymmetric component, notably in Elias 20, where substantial residuals remained without our method. We also applied our method to continuum data of PDS 70 to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. We successfully recovered emission from PDS 70 c consistently with previous studies, and also tentatively discovered new substructures. In this study, the concept of rheo-optics is applied that explores the flow birefringence caused by stress components along the optical axis of the camera since it is often overlooked in the traditional theories of photoelastic flow measurement. A novel aspect of this research is that it involved conducting polarization measurements on simple shear flows, specifically from a perspective in which a shear-velocity gradient exists along the camera's optical axis. A parallel-plate-type rheometer and a polarization camera are employed for these systematic measurements. The experimental findings for dilute aqueous cellulose nanocrystal suspensions demonstrates that the flow birefringence can be expressed as a power law based on the power of the second invariant of the deformation-rate tensor. This suggests that flow birefringence can be universally characterized by the coordinate-independent invariants and a pre-factor determined by the direction of polarization measurement. By adjusting the nonlinear term in the stress-optic law, its applicability could be expanded to include three-dimensional fluid stress fields in which the stress is distributed along the camera's optical axis.

The present study proposes a novel and simple rheo-optical technique to investigate the relation between the rheology of complex fluids and their internal structural deformation under uniaxial extensional flow. The macroscale results of viscoelasticity from rheological measurements and microscale results of birefringence from optical measurements are combined to evaluate the microstructural deformation and orientation state inside the fluids under extensional stress. The proposed technique combines a liquid dripping method with a high-speed polarization camera to measure the extensional stress and flow-induced birefringence field simultaneously. In the liquid dripping method, temporal evolution images of the liquid filament diameter for fluids dripping from a nozzle are measured to obtain the extensional stress loading on the liquid filament. These images are captured with a high-speed polarization camera connected to a micro polarization element alley, enabling high-speed imaging of the birefringent field. Worm-like micellar solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium salicylate (NaSal) with varying concentrations of CTAB and NaSal are employed as the measurement targets. Consequently, we successfully visualized temporally developing images of the birefringence field of uniaxially extending worm-like micellar solutions induced by the orientation of micelles toward the extensional direction. Furthermore, the proposed technique supports investigating the conditions for establishing the stress-optical rule, which is the linear relation between stress and birefringence for complex fluids. The stress-optical coefficient, a proportionality constant indicating the sensitivity of birefringence to stress, is analyzed from these measurements. The stress-optical coefficient under uniaxial extensional flow is confirmed to be comparable to that under shear flow.

In the past decade, ALMA observations of protoplanetary disks revealed various substructures including gaps and rings. Their origin may be probed through statistical studies on the physical properties of the substructures. We present the analyses of archival ALMA Band 6 continuum data of 43 disks (39 Class II and 4 Herbig Ae) in the Taurus-Auriga region. We employ a novel 2D super-resolution imaging technique based on sparse modeling to obtain images with high fidelity and spatial resolution. As a result, we have obtained images with spatial resolutions comparable to a few au ($0''.02 - 0''.1$), which is two to three times better than conventional CLEAN methods. All dust disks are spatially resolved, with the radii ranging from 8 to 238 au with a median radius of 45 au. Half of the disks harbor clear gap structures, whose radial locations show a bimodal distribution with peaks at $\lesssim20$ au and $\gtrsim30$ au. We also see structures indicating weak gaps at all the radii in the disk. We find that the widths of these gaps increase with their depths, which is consistent with the model of planet-disk interactions. The inferred planet mass-orbital radius distribution indicates that the planet distribution is analogous to our Solar System. We used VLT/SPHERE to observe 20 systems in the Cha I cloud in polarized scattered light in the near-infrared. We combined the scattered light observations with existing literature data on stellar properties and with archival ALMA continuum data to study trends with system age and dust mass. We also connected resolved near-infrared observations with the spectral energy distributions of the systems. In 13 of the 20 systems included in this study we detected resolved scattered light signals from circumstellar dust. For the CR Cha, CT Cha, CV Cha, SY Cha, SZ Cha, and VZ Cha systems we present the first detailed descriptions of the disks in scattered light. The observations found typically smooth or faint disks, often with little substructure, with the notable exceptions of SZ Cha, which shows an extended multiple-ringed disk, and WW Cha, which shows interaction with the cloud environment. New high S/N K- band observations of the HD 97048 system in our survey reveal a significant brightness asymmetry that may point to disk misalignment and subsequent shadowing of outer disk regions, possibly related to the suggested planet candidate in the disk. We resolve for the first time the stellar binary in the CS Cha system. Multiple wavelength observations of the disk around CS Cha have revealed that the system contains small, compact dust grains that may be strongly settled, consistent with numerical studies of circumbinary disks. We find in our sample that there is a strong anti-correlation between the presence of a (close) stellar companion and the detection of circumstellar material with five of our seven nondetections located in binary systems., Comment: Accepted by A&A

This study systematically investigates the flow birefringence of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) suspensions. The aim is to clarify the importance of the stress component along the camera's optical axis in the stress-optic law (SOL), which describes the relationship between birefringence, the retardation of transmitted polarized light, and the stress field. More than 100 datasets pertaining to the retardation of CNC suspensions (concentrations of 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 1.0 wt\%) in a laminar flow field within a rectangular channel (aspect ratios of 0.1, 1, and 3) are systematically obtained. The measured retardation data are compared with the predictions given by the conventional SOL excluding the stress component along the camera's optical axis and by the SOL including these components as second-order terms (2nd-order SOL). The results show that the 2nd-order SOL gives a significantly better agreement with the measurements. Based on the 2nd-order SOL, the retardation at the center of the channel, where the effect of the stress component along the camera's optical axis is most pronounced, is predicted to be proportional to the square of the flow rate, which agrees with the experimental data. The results confirm the importance of considering the stress component along the camera's optical axis in the flow birefringence of CNC suspensions at high flow rates, even for quasi-two-dimensional channel flow., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

The previous, high angular resolution 225 GHz ($\sim$1.3 mm) continuum observations on the transitional disk DM Tau have resolved an outer ring at 20-120 au radii that is weakly azimuthally asymmetric. We aimed to examine dust growth and filtration in the outer ring. We performed the $\sim$0$''$.06 ($\sim$8.7 au) resolution Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) 40-48 GHz ($\sim$7 mm; Q band) continuum observations and the complementary observations at lower frequencies. In addition, we analyzed the archival JVLA observations that were taken since 2010. Intriguingly, the Q band image resolved the azimuthally highly asymmetric, knotty dust emission sources close to the inner edge of the outer ring. Fitting the 8-700 GHz spectral energy distribution (SED) with two dust components indicates that the maximum grain size in these knotty dust emission sources is likely $\gtrsim$300 $\mu$m while it is $\lesssim$50 $\mu$m in the rest of the ring. These results may be explained by trapping of inward migrating grown dust close to the ring inner edge. The exact mechanism for developing the azimuthal asymmetry has not yet been identified, which may be due to planet-disk interaction that might also be responsible for the creation of the dust cavity and pressure bump, or the fluid instabilities and vortex formation due to shear motions. Finally, we remark that the asymmetries in DM Tau are hard to diagnose from the $\gtrsim$225 GHz observations owing to a high optical depth at the ring. An inner component misaligned from an outer component in a protoplanetary disk can result in the former casting shadows on the latter. We present a new instance of shadowing on the outer disk around a very low mass star, ZZ~Tau~IRS. Through the analysis of near-infrared (NIR) archival data at $\lambda=1.6$~$\mu$m acquired with the Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope, we identified brightness asymmetries in the top and bottom halves of the highly inclined outer disk, separated by a dark lane. The brighter sides in the top and bottom halves are on the opposite sides, which we attributed to shadows cast by a misaligned inner disk. Radiative transfer modeling of the system with a misaligned angle of 15~deg between the inner and outer disks well reproduced the observations. Additionally, we found an elevated brightness temperature of $^{12}$CO~(3-2) at $r\sim30$~au on the brighter side in NIR wavelengths in the top half disk, which can be explained by the shadowing effect too. While the origin of the misaligned inner disk remains unclear, future monitoring observations to search for temporal variations in brightness asymmetries will likely provide useful clues., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted in AJ

We report on a novel material obtained by modifying pristine YBCO superconductor in solid phase synthesis via simultaneous partial substitution of Ba by Sr and O by Se. Simultaneous application of EDX and EBSD confirmed that Se atoms indeed enter the crystalline lattice cell. The detailed XRD analysis further confirmed this conclusion and revealed that the obtained polycrystalline material contains 5 phases, with the major phase ($>$30\%) being a cuprate YBa$_{1.4}$Sr$_{0.6}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6}$Se$% _{0.51}$. The obtained superconductor demonstrates unique properties, including i) two superconducting transitions with $T_{c1}\approx$ 35 K (granular surface phase) and $T_{c2}\approx$ 13 K (bulk granular phase) - this granular phase arrangement naturally yields the Wohlleben effect; ii) reentrant diamagnetism and resistive state; iii) strong paramagnetism with Curie-Weiss behavior (% $\theta_{CW} \approx$ 4 K) and the ferromagnetic phase overruled by superconductivity; iv) Schottky anomaly visible in the heat capacity data and most likely delivered by small clusters of magnetic moments. Thorough analysis of the heat capacity data reveals a strong-coupling $d-$wave pairing in its bulk phase (with $2\Delta /T_{c}\approx 5$), and, most importantly, a very unusual anomaly in this cuprate. There are reasons to associate this anomaly with the quantum criticality observed in traditional cuprate superconductors at much higher fields (achievable only in certain laboratories). In our case, the fields leading to quantum criticality are much weaker ($\sim $7-9 T) thus opening avenues for exploration of the interplay between superconductivity and pair density waves by the wider research community.

Polarization is a unique tool to study the properties of dust grains of protoplanetary disks and detail the initial conditions of planet formation. Polarization around HL Tau was previously imaged using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at Bands 3 (3.1 mm), 6 (1.3 mm), and 7 (0.87 mm), showing that the polarization orientation changes across wavelength $\lambda$. The polarization morphology at Band 7 is predominantly parallel to the disk minor axis but appears azimuthally oriented at Band 3, with the morphology at Band 6 in between the two. We present new ~0.2" (29 au) polarization observations at Q-Band (7.0 mm) using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and at Bands 4 (2.1 mm), 5 (1.5 mm), and 7 using ALMA, consolidating HL Tau's position as the protoplanetary disk with the most complete wavelength coverage in dust polarization. The polarization patterns at Bands 4 and 5 continue to follow the morphological transition with wavelength previously identified in Bands 3, 6, and 7. Based on the azimuthal variation, we decompose the polarization into contributions from scattering ($s$) and thermal emission ($t$). We find that $s$ decreases slowly with increasing $\lambda$, and $t$ increases more rapidly with $\lambda$ which are expected from optical depth effects of toroidally aligned, scattering prolate grains. The relatively weak $\lambda$ dependence of $s$ is consistent with large, porous grains. In recent years, particle discrimination methods based on digital waveform analysis techniques for neutron-transmutation-doped silicon (nTD-Si) detectors have become widely used for the identification of low-energy charged particles. Although the particle discrimination capability of this method has been well demonstrated for small incident angles, the particle discrimination performance may be affected by changes in the detector response when the detector is moved closer to the charged particle source and the incident position distribution and incident angle distribution to the detector become wide. In this study, we performed a beam test for particle discrimination in light-charged ($Z \le 2$) particles using the digital waveform analysis method with a pad-type nTD-Si detector and investigated the dependence of the performance of the particle discrimination on the incident position and incident angle. As the incident angle increased, a decrease in the maximum current was observed, which was sufficient to affect the performance of the particle discrimination. This decrease can be expressed as a function of the penetration depth of the charged particles into the detector, which varies for each nuclide., Comment: 8 pages, 13 figures

Dark photons have been considered potential candidates for dark matter. The dark photon dark matter (DPDM) has a mass and interacts with electromagnetic fields via kinetic mixing with a coupling constant of $\chi$. Thus, DPDMs are converted into ordinary photons at metal surfaces. Using a millimeter-wave receiver set in a radioshielding box, we performed experiments to detect the conversion photons from the DPDM in the frequency range 10--18 GHz, which corresponds to a mass range 41--74 $\mu\mathrm{eV}$. We found no conversion photon signal in this range and set the upper limits to $\chi < (0.5\text{--}3.9) \times 10^{-10}$ at a 95% confidence level., Comment: 8 pages, 14 figures

We examined the grain size in the dust ring encircling the 0.19~$M_\sun$ T Tauri star CIDA 1 using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at multiple centimeter wavelengths, with a spatial resolution of 0$\farcs$2--0$\farcs$9. We detected distinct partial-ring structures at these wavelengths around CIDA~1. Based on spatial distributions and spectral indexes, we determined that these centimeter emissions originated from dust, rather than free-free or synchrotron emissions. To estimate the maximum grain size ($a_{\rm max}$) within the ring, we compared the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) with SEDs calculated for different $a_{\rm max}$ values using radiative transfer calculations. Our findings indicate an $a_{\rm max}$ value of approximately 2.5~cm in the ring, assuming the dust opacity can be approximated by the DSHARP models. These results suggest that grain growth took place within the CIDA~1 ring, potentially facilitating more efficient planet formation through pebble accretion scenarios involving centimeter-sized pebbles., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted in AJ

The present study investigated the flow birefringence induced by shear components along a camera's optical axis, which has been neglected in conventional theories of photoelastic measurements. Measurements were conducted for a wide range of shear rates from a direction perpendicular to the shear using a high-speed polarization camera and a parallel-plate-type rheometer. The measurement results obtained from a fluid with low viscoelasticity, specifically a dilute suspension of cellulose nanocrystals, showed that the birefringence increases monotonically as the stress components along the camera's optical axis increase. It was also found that the birefringence showed a power law with respect to the shear rate. The proliferation of Open Source Software (OSS) adoption and collaboration has surged within industry, resulting in its ubiquitous presence in commercial offerings and shared digital infrastructure. However, in the public sector, both awareness and adoption of OSS is still in its infancy due to a number of obstacles including regulatory, cultural, and capacity-related challenges. This special issue is a call for action, highlighting the necessity for both research and practice to narrow the gap, selectively transfer and adapt existing knowledge, as well as generate new knowledge to enable the public sector to fully harness the potential benefits OSS has to offer.
