We present new high-sensitivity e-MERLIN and VLA radio images of the prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 at 5, 10 and 21 GHz. We image the radio jet, from the compact components NE, C, S1 and S2 to the faint double-lobed jet structure of the NE and SW jet lobes. Furthermore, we map the jet between by combining e-MERLIN and VLA data for the first time. Components NE, C and S2 have steep spectra indicative of optically-thin non-thermal emission domination between 5 and 21 GHz. Component S1, which is where the AGN resides, has a flat radio spectrum. We report a new component, S2a, a part of the southern jet. We compare these new data with the MERLIN and VLA data observed in 1983, 1992 and 1995 and report a flux decrease by a factor of 2 in component C, suggesting variability of this jet component. With the high angular resolution e-MERLIN maps, we detect the bow shocks in the NE jet lobe that coincide with the molecular gas outflows observed with ALMA. The NE jet lobe has enough radio power considered to be responsible for driving out the dense molecular gas observed with ALMA around the same region.

The SuperCLuster Assisted Shear Survey (SuperCLASS) is a legacy programme using the e-MERLIN interferometric array. The aim is to observe the sky at L-band (1.4 GHz) to a r.m.s. of 7 uJy per beam over an area of ~1 square degree centred on the Abell 981 supercluster. The main scientific objectives of the project are: (i) to detect the effects of weak lensing in the radio in preparation for similar measurements with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA); (ii) an extinction free census of star formation and AGN activity out to z~1. In this paper we give an overview of the project including the science goals and multi-wavelength coverage before presenting the first data release. We have analysed around 400 hours of e-MERLIN data allowing us to create a Data Release 1 (DR1) mosaic of ~0.26 square degrees to the full depth. These observations have been supplemented with complementary radio observations from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and optical/near infra-red observations taken with the Subaru, Canada-France-Hawaii and Spitzer Telescopes. The main data product is a catalogue of 887 sources detected by the VLA, of which 395 are detected by e-MERLIN and 197 of these are resolved. We have investigated the size, flux and spectral index properties of these sources finding them compatible with previous studies. Preliminary photometric redshifts, and an assessment of galaxy shapes measured in the radio data, combined with a radio-optical cross-correlation technique probing cosmic shear in a supercluster environment, are presented in companion papers., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables. We present high-sensitivity 1.51 GHz e-MERLIN radio images of the nearby galaxy NGC 6217. We resolve the compact radio source at the centre of NGC 6217 for the first time, finding a twin-lobed structure with a total linear size of ~4 arcsec (~400pc). The radio source does not have a compact central core but there is an unresolved hot spot near the outer edge of the southern lobe. Combining our e-MERLIN data with new VLA A-Array data and archival multi-wavelength data, we explore possible scenarios which might explain this complex radio morphology. We conclude that this radio source is most likely powered by a low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN) but with a possible important contribution from nuclear star formation. We also investigate the origin of a putative X-ray jet in NGC 6217, previously suggested in the literature. This `jet' consists of three X-ray `knots' in a line, pointed away from the nucleus, with a total size of ~3 arcmin (~15 kpc). We find no extended radio emission coincident with the `jet'. An additional compact radio source, aligned with the knots but without an X-ray counterpart is detected. We detect IR/optical sources falling within the X-ray extraction regions of the `knots', but note that these sources could be chance associations due to high source density around the target field and we estimate the probability of three randomly aligned X-ray sources to be 0.3 per cent in this field.

Radio continuum observations have proven to be a workhorse in our understanding of the star formation process (i.e., stellar birth and death) from galaxies both in the nearby universe and out to the highest redshifts. In this article we focus on how the ngVLA will transform our understanding of star formation by enabling one to map and decompose the radio continuum emission from large, heterogeneous samples of nearby galaxies on $\gtrsim 10$\,pc scales to conduct a proper accounting of the energetic processes powering it. At the discussed sensitivity and angular resolution, the ngVLA will simultaneously be able to create maps of current star formation activity at $\sim$100\,pc scales, as well as detect and characterize (e.g., size, spectral shape, density, etc.) discrete H{\sc ii} regions and supernova remnants on 10\,pc scales in galaxies out to the distance of the Virgo cluster. Their properties can then be used to see how they relate to the local and global ISM and star formation conditions. IC883 is a luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) classified as a starburst-active galactic nucleus (AGN) composite. In a previous study we detected a low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN) radio candidate. Here we report on our radio follow-up at three frequencies which provides direct and unequivocal evidence of the AGN activity in IC883. Our analysis of archival X-ray data, together with the detection of a transient radio source with luminosity typical of bright supernovae, give further evidence of the ongoing star formation activity, which dominates the energetics of the system. At sub-parsec scales, the radio nucleus has a core-jet morphology with the jet being a newly ejected component showing a subluminal proper motion of 0.6c-1c. The AGN contributes less than two per cent of the total IR luminosity of the system. The corresponding Eddington factor is ~1E-3, suggesting this is a low-accretion rate engine, as often found in LLAGNs. However, its high bolometric luminosity (~10E44erg/s) agrees better with a normal AGN. This apparent discrepancy may just be an indication of the transition nature of the nucleus from a system dominated by star-formation, to an AGN-dominated system. The nucleus has a strongly inverted spectrum and a turnover at ~4.4GHz, thus qualifying as a candidate for the least luminous (L_5.0GHz ~ 6.3E28erg/s/Hz) and one of the youngest (~3000yr) gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) sources. If the GPS origin for the IC883 nucleus is confirmed, then advanced mergers in the LIRG category are potentially key environments to unveil the evolution of GPS sources into more powerful radio galaxies., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. Context. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) data are extremely sensitive to the phase stability of the VLBI array. This is especially important when we reach {\mu}Jy r.m.s. sensitivities. Calibration using standard phase referencing techniques is often used to improve the phase stability of VLBI data but the results are often not optimal. This is evident in blank fields that do not have in-beam calibrators. Aims. We present a calibration algorithm termed Multi-Source Self-Calibration (MSSC) which can be used after standard phase referencing on wide-field VLBI observations. This is tested on a 1.6 GHz wide-field VLBI data set of the Hubble Deep Field-North and the Hubble Flanking Fields. Methods. MSSC uses multiple target sources detected in the field via standard phase referencing techniques and modifies the visibili- ties so that each data set approximates to a point source. These are combined to increase the signal to noise and permit self-calibration. In principle, this should allow residual phase changes caused by the troposphere and ionosphere to be corrected. By means of faceting, the technique can also be used for direction dependent calibration. Results. Phase corrections, derived using MSSC, were applied to a wide-field VLBI data set of the HDF-N comprising of 699 phase centres. MSSC was found to perform considerably better than standard phase referencing and single source self-calibration. All detected sources exhibited dramatic improvements in dynamic range. Using MSSC, one source reached the detection threshold taking the total detected sources to twenty. 60% of these sources can now be imaged with uniform weighting compared to just 45% with standard phase referencing. Despite first being detected in the 1970s, surprisingly little is known about the OH main line maser population in the nearby starburst galaxy M82. Sometimes referred to as 'kilomasers', they have isotropic luminosities intermediate between Galactic masers and those found in more distant megamasers. Several observations have been carried by this group over the last ten years in an attempt to get a better handle on their nature. High velocity resolution VLA observations in 2006 showed that almost all of the maser spots, distributed across the central arcminute of the galaxy, were apparently coincident with background continuum features, and a handful displayed multiple velocity components. The majority of those with velocity structure are located on a blue-shifted arc in the pv-plane, spatially located on an arc northward of the peculiar source known as B41.95+57.5. Now, new results from high spatial and spectral resolution observations with the EVN have resolved several of these masers into multiple spatial components for the first time. The maser emission is compared with known continuum sources in the galaxy, and we conclude that at least some of the maser emission is from high-gain maser action., Comment: Six pages, one table, one figure. We present high spatial resolution MERLIN 1.4GHz radio observations of two high redshift (z~2) sources, RGJ123623 (HDF147) and RGJ123617 (HDF130), selected as the brightest radio sources from a sample of submillimetre-faint radio galaxies. They have starburst classifications from their rest-frame UV spectra. However, their radio morphologies are remarkably compact (<80mas and <65mas respectively), demanding that the radio luminosity be dominated by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) rather than starbursts. Near-IR imaging (HST NICMOS F160W) shows large scale sizes (R_(1/2)~0.75", diameters ~12kpc) and SED fitting to photometric points (optical through the mid-IR) reveals massive (~5x10^(11) M_sun), old (a few Gyr) stellar populations. Both sources have low flux densities at observed 24um and are undetected in observed 70um and 850um, suggesting a low mass of interstellar dust. They are also formally undetected in the ultra-deep 2Ms Chandra data, suggesting that any AGN activity is likely intrinsically weak. We suggest both galaxies have evolved stellar populations, low star formation rates, and low accretion rates onto massive black holes (10^(8.6) M_sun) whose radio luminosity is weakly beamed (by factors of a few). A cluster-like environment has been identified near HDF130 by an over-density of galaxies at z=1.99, reinforcing the claim that clusters lead to more rapid evolution in galaxy populations. We present a multiwavelength study of the nucleus, environment, jets, and hotspots of the nearby FRII radio galaxy 3C 321, using new and archival data from MERLIN, the VLA, Spitzer, HST, and Chandra. An initially collimated radio jet extends northwest from the nucleus of its host galaxy and produces a compact knot of radio emission adjacent (in projection) to a companion galaxy, after which it dramatically flares and bends, extending out in a diffuse structure 35 kpc northwest of the nucleus. We argue that the simplest explanation for the unusual morphology of the jet is that it is undergoing an interaction with the companion galaxy. Given that the northwest hotspot that lies >250 kpc from the core shows X-ray emission, which likely indicates in situ high-energy particle acceleration, we argue that the jet-companion interaction is not a steady-state situation. Instead, we suggest that the jet has been disrupted on a timescale less than the light travel time to the end of the lobe, $\sim 10^6$ years, and that the jet flow to this hotspot will only be disrupted for as long as the jet-companion interaction takes place. The host galaxy of 3C 321 and the companion galaxy are in the process of merging, and each hosts a luminous AGN. As this is an unusual situation, we investigate the hypothesis that the interacting jet has driven material on to the companion galaxy, triggering its AGN. Finally, we present detailed radio and X-ray observations of both hotspots, which show that there are multiple emission sites, with spatial offsets between the radio and X-ray emission., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. CU Virginis is one of the brightest radio emitting members of the magnetic chemically peculiar (MCP) stars and also one of the fastest rotating. We have now discovered that CU Vir is unique among stellar radio sources in generating a persistent, highly collimated, beam of coherent, 100% polarised, radiation from one of its magnetic poles that sweeps across the Earth every time the star rotates. This makes the star strikingly similar to a pulsar. This similarity is further strengthened by the observation that the rotating period of the star is lengthening at a phenomenal rate (significantly faster than any other astrophysical source - including pulsars) due to a braking mechanism related to its very strong magnetic field., Comment: 10 pages including 2 figures
