Objective. To evaluate electrical impedance myography (EIM) in conjunction with machine learning (ML) to detect infantile spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and disease progression. Approach . Twenty-six infants with SMA and twenty-seven healthy infants had been enrolled and assessed with EIM as part of the NeuroNEXT SMA biomarker study. We applied a variety of modern, supervised ML approaches to this data, first seeking to differentiate healthy from SMA muscle, and then, using the best method, to track SMA progression. Main Results. Several of the ML algorithms worked well, but linear discriminant analysis (LDA) achieved 88.6% accuracy on subject muscles studied. This contrasts with a maximum of 60% accuracy that could be achieved using the single or multifrequency assessment approaches available at the time. LDA scores were also able to track progression effectively, although a multifrequency reactance-based measure also performed very well in this context. Significance. EIM enhanced with ML promises to be effective for providing effective diagnosis and tracking children and adults with SMA treated with currently available therapies. The normative trends identified here may also inform future applications of the technology in very young children. Objective . The measurement of electromyography (EMG) signals with needle electrodes is widely used in clinical settings for diagnosing neuromuscular diseases. Patients experience pain during needle EMG testing. It is significant to develop alternative diagnostic modalities. Approach . This paper proposes a portable magnetomyography (MMG) measurement system for neuromuscular disease auxiliary diagnosis. Firstly, the design and operating principle of the system are introduced. The feasibility of using the system for auxiliary diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases is then studied. The magnetic signals and needle EMG signals of thirty subjects were collected and compared. Main results . It is found that the amplitude of muscle magnetic field signal increases during mild muscle contraction, and the signal magnitudes of the patients are smaller than those of normal subjects. The diseased muscles tested in the experiment can be distinguished from the normal muscles based on the signal amplitude, using a threshold value of 6 pT. The MMG diagnosis results align well with the needle EMG diagnosis. In addition, the MMG measurement indicates that there is a persistence of spontaneous activity in the diseased muscle. Significance. The experimental results demonstrate that it is feasible to auxiliary diagnose neuromuscular diseases using the portable MMG system, which offers the advantages of non-contact and painless measurements. After more in-depth, systematic, and quantitative research, the portable MMG could potentially be used for auxiliary diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases. Objective: To establish age and gender-specific paediatric and adult reference data for muscle function parameters assessed using Jumping Mechanography in the Indian population., Methods: 2056 healthy individuals (1068 males), aged 5 to 60 years, performed 2 tests on a force platform (Leonardo Mechanograph, Novotec). Maximum power (Pmax) was assessed by single two legged jump and maximum force (Fmax) by multiple one legged hopping. LMS method was used to generate age and gender-specific reference curves for 5 - 20y group and mean ± SD and median ± IQR are presented for 21 - 60y group., Results: In 5 - 20y group, Pmax and Fmax increased with age while in 21 - 60y group, the parameters declined with age. Females had lower Pmax values than males, consistently through all age groups. In children <15y, there were no intergender differences in Fmax, however, in further age groups, females had lower Fmax (p<0.001). Our participants showed lower Pmax and Fmax when compared with machine reference data based on German population (p<0.001)., Conclusion: We present ethnicity-specific reference values for muscle function by Jumping Mechanography. Force myography (FMG) is increasingly gaining importance in gesture recognition because of it's ability to achieve high classification accuracy without having a direct contact with the skin. In this study, we investigate the performance of a bracelet with only six commercial force sensitive resistors (FSR) sensors for classifying many hand gestures representing all letters and numbers from 0 to 10 in the American sign language. For this, we introduce an optimized feature selection in combination with the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) as a classifier by investigating three swarm intelligence algorithms, which are the binary grey wolf optimizer (BGWO), binary grasshopper optimizer (BGOA), and binary hybrid grey wolf particle swarm optimizer (BGWOPSO), which is used as an optimization method for ELM for the first time in this study. The findings reveal that the BGWOPSO, in which PSO supports the GWO optimizer by controlling its exploration and exploitation using inertia constant to improve the convergence speed to reach the best global optima, outperformed the other investigated algorithms. (1) Background: The Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) is commonly used clinically to evaluate spasticity, but its qualitative nature introduces subjectivity. We propose a novel metric scale to quantitatively measure spasticity using mechanomyography (MMG) to mitigate these subjective effects. (2) Methods: The flexor and extensor muscles of knee and elbow joints were assessed with the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) during the acquisition of mechanomyography (MMG) data. The median absolute amplitude of the MMG signals was utilized as a key descriptor. An algorithm was developed to normalize the MMG signals to a universal gravitational (G) acceleration scale, aligning them with the limits and range of MAS. (3) Results: We evaluated 34 lower and upper limbs from 22 volunteers (average age 39.91 ± 13.77 years) of both genders. Polynomial regression provided the best fit (R 2 = 0.987), with negligible differences (mean of 0.001 G) between the MAS and MMG. We established three numerical sets for the median, minimum, and maximum MMG(G) values corresponding to each MAS range, ensuring consistent alignment of the Modified Ashworth levels with our proposed scale. (4) Conclusions: Muscle spasticity can now be quantitatively and semi-automatically evaluated using our algorithm and instrumentation, enhancing the objectivity and reliability of spasticity assessments.

Background: The accuracy and precision of currently available, widely used acceleromyograph and electromyograph neuromuscular blockade monitors have not been well studied. In addition, the normalization of the train-of-four ratio from acceleromyography (train-of-four ratio [T4/T1] divided by the baseline train-of-four ratio) has not been validated in comparison to mechanomyography., Methods: Enrolled patients had surgery under general anesthesia with a supraglottic airway and without any neuromuscular blocking drugs. Three acceleromyograph monitors, three electromyograph monitors, and a mechanomyograph built in the authors' laboratory were tested. Most patients had an electromyograph and the mechanomyograph on one arm and a third monitor on the contralateral arm. Train-of-four ratios were collected every 12 to 20 s for the duration of the anesthetic. At least 1,000 train-of-four ratios were recorded for each device. Gauge repeatability and reproducibility analysis was performed., Results: Twenty-eight patients were enrolled. In total, 9,498 train-of-four ratio measurements were collected. Since no neuromuscular blocking drugs were used, the expected train-of-four ratio was 1.0. All of the acceleromyograph monitors produced overshoot in the train-of-four ratio (estimated means, 1.10 to 1.13) and substantial variability (gauge SDs, 0.07 to 0.18). Normalization of the train-of-four ratio measured by acceleromyography improved the estimated mean for each device (0.97 to 1.0), but the variability was not improved (gauge SDs, 0.06 to 0.17). The electromyograph and the mechanomyograph monitors produced minimal overshoot (estimated means, 0.99 to 1.01) and substantially less variation (gauge SDs, 0.01 to 0.02). For electromyography and mechanomyography, 0.3% of all train-of-four ratios were outside of the range 0.9 to 1.1. For acceleromyography, 27 to 51% of normalized train-of-four ratios were outside the range of 0.9 to 1.1., Conclusions: Three currently available acceleromyograph monitors produced overshoot and substantial variability that could be clinically significant. Normalization corrected the overshoot in the average results but did not reduce the wide variability. Introduction/aims: Paired-pulse stimulation provides clinically useful information regarding sensory inhibition. When supraorbital nerve stimulation is repeated within a short interval, the response to the second stimulation is reduced to varying degrees. This magnitude of change in stimulation response can be monitored by electromyogram (EMG) or by mechanomyogram (MMG) as in this report. MMG has some advantages such as being less time consuming and lacking stimulus artifact. We compared the use of MMG and EMG to validate MMG as an effective method of assessing blink reflex paired-pulse inhibition., Methods: Eight volunteers participated. Participants received electrical stimulation to the supraorbital nerve of each side. A paired-pulse paradigm was employed, varying the conditioning-test interval between 5 and 800 ms. The R1 component of the induced blink reflex was simultaneously recorded by EMG using a pair of electrodes placed on the lower eyelid and by MMG using an accelerometer placed between the electrodes., Results: The correlation coefficient of the R1 amplitude between MMG and EMG of the grand-averaged waveforms was 0.99. The average participant r value was .91 (range .76-.99). Similar analyses were performed for the amplitude variation of the second response relative to the first response. Results correlated well, yielding r values of .97 and .86 for the grand-averaged waveform and the average for each subject., Discussion: The present results demonstrate that MMG could be an alternative to EMG in assessing paired-pulse inhibition of the electrical blink reflex R1 component., (© 2024 The Author(s). This study designs a wearable sensing system for locomotion mode recognition using lower-limb skin surface curvature deformation caused by the morphological changes of musculotendinous complexes and soft tissues. Flexible bending sensors are embedded into stretch pants, enabling curvature deformations of specific skin segments above lower-limb muscle groups to be captured in a noncontact manner. To evaluate the performance of this system, we conducted experiments on eight able-bodied subjects completing seven common locomotive activities, including walking, running, ramp ascending/descending, stair ascending/descending, and standing. The system measured seven channels of deformation signals from two cross-sections on the shank and the thigh. The collected signals were distinguishable across different locomotion modes and exhibited consistency when monitoring steps. Using selected time-domain features and a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier enabled the proposed system to continuously recognize locomotion modes with an average accuracy of 96.5%. Furthermore, the system maintains recognition performance with 95.7% accuracy even after removing and reapplying the sensors. Finally, we conducted comparison experiments to analyze how window length, feature selection, and the number of channels affect recognition performance, providing insights for optimization. We believe that this novel signal platform holds great potential as a valuable supplementary tool in wearable human motion detection, enriching the information diversity for motion analysis, and enabling new possibilities for further advancements and applications in fields including biomedical engineering, textiles, and computer graphics.

Context: Shoulder muscles are active during front-crawl swimming to provide propulsion and stabilize the glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joints. Researchers have proposed that fatigue might contribute to altered activation of these muscles and represent a risk factor for injuries. Tensiomyography (TMG) might function as a noninvasive tool to detect changes in contractile measures of the skeletal muscles due to exercise-induced neuromuscular fatigue, though it has not yet been used in the shoulder muscles of swimmers., Objective: To assess the effects of a fatiguing swimming protocol on shoulder muscle TMG measures and isometric strength in competitive swimmers., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting: Swimming pool facility., Patients or Other Participants: A total of 14 young front-crawl competitive swimmers (11 males and 3 females; age = 21 ± 3 years [range, 17-26 years], height = 1.78 ± 0.06 m, mass = 73.1 ± 9.2 kg)., Main Outcome Measure(s): Participants completed TMG and isometric strength assessments before and after 30-minute, high-intensity swim training. The TMG assessment was performed on 7 muscles of the shoulder according to front-crawl biomechanics and the applicability of the technique to obtain data, such as time to contraction and muscle-belly radial displacement. Isometric strength was assessed using a digital handheld dynamometer during shoulder flexion, extension, external rotation, and internal rotation., Results: Fatigue induced a smaller radial displacement, mostly observable in latissimus dorsi (-1.0 mm; 95% CI = -1.7, -0.3 mm; P = .007) and pectoralis major muscles (-1.4 mm; 95% CI = -2.4, -0.4 mm; P = .007). Precise feedback assures precise control commands especially for assistive or rehabilitation devices. Biofeedback systems integrated with assistive or rehabilitative robotic exoskeletons tend to increase its performance and effectiveness. Therefore, there has been plenty of research in the field of biofeedback covering different aspects such as signal acquisition, conditioning, feature extraction and integration with the control system. Among several types of biofeedback systems, Force myography (FMG) technique is a promising one in terms of affordability, high classification accuracies, ease to use, and low computational cost. Compared to traditional biofeedback systems such as electromyography (EMG) which offers some invasive techniques, FMG offers a completely non-invasive solution with much less effort for preprocessing with high accuracies. This work covers the whole aspects of FMG technique in terms of signal acquisition, feature extraction, signal processing, developing the machine learning model, evaluating tools for the performance of the model. Impairment of hand functions in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) severely disrupts activities of daily living. Recent advances have enabled rehabilitation assisted by robotic devices to augment the residual function of the muscles. Traditionally, electromyography-based muscle activity sensing interfaces have been utilized to sense volitional motor intent to drive robotic assistive devices. However, the dexterity and fidelity of control that can be achieved with electromyography-based control have been limited due to inherent limitations in signal quality. We have developed and tested a muscle-computer interface (MCI) utilizing sonomyography to provide control of a virtual cursor for individuals with motor-incomplete spinal cord injury. We demonstrate that individuals with SCI successfully gained control of a virtual cursor by utilizing contractions of muscles of the wrist joint. The sonomyography-based interface enabled control of the cursor at multiple graded levels demonstrating the ability to achieve accurate and stable endpoint control. Our sonomyography-based muscle-computer interface can enable dexterous control of upper-extremity assistive devices for individuals with motor-incomplete SCI.

Introduction: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is the most common complication of diabetes producing metabolic disruptions in the peripheral nervous system. Alteration in the predictable nature of tendon reflexes is the most common indicator suggesting the possibility of diabetic neuropathy. Evaluation of tendon reflexes is a part of various clinical scoring systems that assess neuropathy. The conventional reflex grading scales are subjective, lack temporal data, and have high inter-rater variability. Hence, an indigenous quantification tool was developed to evaluate the tendon reflexes in order to assess diabetic peripheral neuropathy., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in 140 healthy volunteers and 140 patients with type 2 diabetes. The mean age of controls and diabetics (49.1 ± 8.9, 50.7 ± 7.5) years, weight (66.9 ± 9.4, 69.8 ± 11.5) kilograms and BMI (24.5 ± 3.8, 26.1 ± 4.7), respectively. All of them are subjected to evaluation of tendon reflexes using the reflex quantification tool comprised of surface mechanomyography and electrogoniometry that can provide various static and dynamic variables of tendon reflex., Results: The dynamic variables such as reflex amplitude, muscle velocity and angular velocity were significantly low in diabetic patients (p: <0.001) whereas latency and duration (p: <0.001) were prolonged. Motion recognition (MR)-based somatosensory interaction technology, which interprets user movements as input instructions, presents a natural approach for promoting human-computer interaction, a critical element for advancing metaverse applications. Herein, this work introduces a non-intrusive muscle-sensing wearable device, that in conjunction with machine learning, enables motion-control-based somatosensory interaction with metaverse avatars. To facilitate MR, the proposed device simultaneously detects muscle mechanical activities, including dynamic muscle shape changes and vibrational mechanomyogram signals, utilizing a flexible 16-channel pressure sensor array (weighing ≈0.38 g). Leveraging the rich information from multiple channels, a recognition accuracy of ≈96.06% is achieved by classifying ten lower-limb motions executed by ten human subjects. In addition, this work demonstrates the practical application of muscle-sensing-based somatosensory interaction, using the proposed wearable device, for enabling the real-time control of avatars in a virtual space. This study provides an alternative approach to traditional rigid inertial measurement units and electromyography-based methods for achieving accurate human motion capture, which can further broaden the applications of motion-interactive wearable devices for the coming metaverse age., (© 2023 The Authors. Introduction/aims: Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is a noninvasive technique being used in clinical studies to characterize muscle by phase, reactance, and resistance after application of a low-intensity current. The aim of this study was to obtain 50-kHz EIM data from healthy volunteers (HVs) for use in future clinical and research studies, perform reliability tests on EIM outcome measures, and compare findings with muscle ultrasound variables., Methods: Four arm and four leg muscles of HVs were evaluated using an EIM device with two sensors, P/N 20-0045 and P/N 014-009. Muscles were evaluated individually and eight-muscle average (8MU), four-muscle upper extremity average, and four-muscle lower extremity average. An intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was applied to assess interrater, intrarater, and intersensor reliability using a subset of HVs. Ultrasound studies on muscle thickness and elastography were also performed on a subset of HVs., Results: For the P/N 20-0045 sensor, the 8MU EIM mean and standard deviation (n = 41) was 14.54 ± 3.31 for phase, 7.04 ± 1.22 for reactance, and 28.91 ± 7.63 for resistance. Reliability for 8MU phase (n = 22) was good to excellent for both interrater (n = 22, ICC = 0.920, 95% CI 0.820 to 0.966) and intrarater (n = 22, ICC = 0.950, 95% CI 0.778 to 0.983). The P/N 014-009 sensor had similar reliability findings. Correlation analyses showed no association between EIM and muscle thickness., Discussion: EIM is a reproducible measure of muscle physiology. Obtaining EIM values from HVs allows us to gain a better understanding how EIM may be altered in diseased muscle., (Published 2023. Introduction: Impaired muscle function is a frequent consequence of musculoskeletal disorders in dogs. Musculoskeletal disorders, especially stifle joint diseases, are common in dogs and assessment of muscle function in dogs is clinically relevant. Acoustic myography (AMG) is a non-invasive method to assess muscle activity. Quantifying muscle function in normal dogs could help identify clinically relevant changes in dogs with orthopaedic disease and allow targeted interventions to improve recovery in these. The objectives of the study were to characterize hindlimb muscle function in healthy dogs using AMG and to investigate the repeatability and reproducibility of AMG in dogs., Methods: Healthy dogs (15-40 kg) without musculoskeletal disorders were recruited and screened for eligibility to participate in the study. The muscle activity in four hindlimb muscles related to the stifle was assessed using AMG. The degree of symmetry between the hindlimbs in these dogs was investigated and the reliability of AMG was evaluated., Results and Conclusions: The study population comprised 21 dogs. Reference intervals and symmetry indices for AMG scores of the hindlimb muscles were identified, with highest variability for the E-scores. For all AMG-scores, same-day variation was lower than between days variation, and both were lowest for S- and T-scores. This present work is aimed at conducting fundamental and exploratory studies of the mechanisms of electrical impedance signal formation. This paper also considers morphofunctional changes in forearm tissues during the performance of basic hand actions. For this purpose, the existing research benches were modernized to conduct experiments of mapping forearm muscle activity by electrode systems on the basis of complexing the electrical impedance signals and electromyography signals and recording electrode systems' pressing force using force transducers. Studies were carried out with the involvement of healthy volunteers in the implementation of vertical movement of the electrode system and ultrasound transducer when the subject's upper limb was positioned in the bed of the stand while performing basic hand actions in order to identify the relationship between the morphofunctional activity of the upper limb muscles and the recorded parameters of the electro-impedance myography signal. On the basis of the results of the studies, including complex measurements of neuromuscular activity on healthy volunteers such as the signals of electro-impedance myography and pressing force, analyses of the morphofunctional changes in tissues during action performance on the basis of ultrasound and MRI studies and the factors influencing the recorded signals of electro-impedance myography are described. The results are of fundamental importance and will enable reproducible electro-impedance myography signals, which, in turn, allow improved anthropomorphic control.

Quantifying muscle strength is an important measure in clinical settings; however, there is a lack of practical tools that can be deployed for routine assessment. The purpose of this study is to propose a deep learning model for ankle plantar flexion torque prediction from time-series mechanomyogram (MMG) signals recorded during isometric contractions (i.e., a similar form to manual muscle testing procedure in clinical practice) and to evaluate its performance. Four different deep learning models in terms of model architecture (based on a stacked bidirectional long short-term memory and dense layers) were designed with different combinations of the number of units (from 32 to 512) and dropout ratio (from 0.0 to 0.8), and then evaluated for prediction performance by conducting the leave-one-subject-out cross-validation method from the 10-subject dataset. As a result, the models explained more variance in the untrained test dataset as the error metrics (e.g., root-mean-square error) decreased and as the slope of the relationship between the measured and predicted joint torques became closer to 1.0. Although the slope estimates appear to be sensitive to an individual dataset, >70% of the variance in nine out of 10 datasets was explained by the optimal model. These results demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed model as a potential tool to quantify average joint torque during a sustained isometric contraction.

Gesture recognition has emerged as a significant research domain in computer vision and human-computer interaction. One of the key challenges in gesture recognition is how to select the most useful channels that can effectively represent gesture movements. In this study, we have developed a channel selection algorithm that determines the number and placement of sensors that are critical to gesture classification. To validate this algorithm, we constructed a Force Myography (FMG)-based signal acquisition system. The algorithm considers each sensor as a distinct channel, with the most effective channel combinations and recognition accuracy determined through assessing the correlation between each channel and the target gesture, as well as the redundant correlation between different channels. The database was created by collecting experimental data from 10 healthy individuals who wore 16 sensors to perform 13 unique hand gestures. The results indicate that the average number of channels across the 10 participants was 3, corresponding to an 75% decrease in the initial channel count, with an average recognition accuracy of 94.46%. This outperforms four widely adopted feature selection algorithms, including Relief-F, mRMR, CFS, and ILFS. Moreover, we have established a universal model for the position of gesture measurement points and verified it with an additional five participants, resulting in an average recognition accuracy of 96.3%. This study provides a sound basis for identifying the optimal and minimum number and location of channels on the forearm and designing specialized arm rings with unique shapes.

Wire myography to test vasomotor functions of blood vessels ex-vivo are well-established for the systemic circulation, however, there is no consensus on protocols for pulmonary arteries. We created a standardized wire myography protocol for healthy rat PAs and validated this in a pulmonary hypertension (PH) model. Vessels stretched to higher initial tensions (5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 mN) exhibited a uniform response to phenylephrine, a larger dynamic range, and lower EC50 values. The endothelium-mediated relaxation showed that moderate tensions (7.5 and 10.0 mN) produced robust responses with higher maximum relaxation and lower EC50 values. For endothelium independent responses, the higher initial tension groups had lower and more consistent EC50 values than the lower initial tension groups. Pulmonary arteries from rats with PH were more responsive to vasoactive drugs when subjected to a higher initial tension. Notably, vessels in the PH group subjected to 15.0 mN exhibited high dynamic ranges in contractile and relaxation responses without tearing. Lastly, we observed attenuated cholinergic responses in these vessels-consistent with endothelial dysfunction in PH. Therefore, a moderate initial tension of 7.5-10.0 mN is optimal for healthy rat pulmonary arteries and a higher initial tension of 15.0 mN is optimal for pulmonary arteries from animals with PH., (© 2024 The Authors. Force myography (FMG) represents a promising alternative to surface electromyography (EMG) in the context of controlling bio-robotic hands. In this study, we built upon our prior research by introducing a novel wearable armband based on FMG technology, which integrates force-sensitive resistor (FSR) sensors housed in newly designed casings. We evaluated the sensors' characteristics, including their load-voltage relationship and signal stability during the execution of gestures over time. Two sensor arrangements were evaluated: arrangement A, featuring sensors spaced at 4.5 cm intervals, and arrangement B, with sensors distributed evenly along the forearm. The data collection involved six participants, including three individuals with trans-radial amputations, who performed nine upper limb gestures. The prediction performance was assessed using support vector machines (SVMs) and k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithms for both sensor arrangments. The results revealed that the developed sensor exhibited non-linear behavior, and its sensitivity varied with the applied force. Notably, arrangement B outperformed arrangement A in classifying the nine gestures, with an average accuracy of 95.4 ± 2.1% compared to arrangement A's 91.3 ± 2.3%. The utilization of the arrangement B armband led to a substantial increase in the average prediction accuracy, demonstrating an improvement of up to 4.5%.

Acute Compartment Syndrome (ACS) is one of the most devastating orthopedic conditions, affecting any of the body's many compartments, which, if sufficiently severe, may result in disability and amputation. Currently, intra-compartmental pressure measurements serve as the gold standard for diagnosing ACS. Diagnosing limbs at risk for ACS before irreversible damage to muscle and nerve is critical. Standard approaches for diagnosing impending compartment syndrome include clinical evaluation of the limb, such as assessment for "tightness" of the overlying skin, reduced pulses distally, and degree of pain, none of which are specific or sensitive. We have proposed a novel method to detect ACS via electrical impedance myography (EIM), where a weak, high-frequency alternating current is passed between one pair of electrodes through a region of tissue, and the resulting surface voltages are measured via a second pair. We evaluated the ability of EIM to detect early muscle ischemia in an established murine model of compression-induced muscle injury, where we collected resistance, reactance, and their dimensionless product, defined as Relative Injury Index (RII) during the study. Our model generated reproducible hypoxia, confirmed by Hypoxyprobe™ staining of endothelial regions within the muscle. Under conditions of ischemia, we demonstrated a reproducible, stable, and significant escalation in resistance, reactance, and RII values, compared to uninjured control limbs. These data make a reasonable argument for additional investigations into using EIM for the early recognition of muscle hypoperfusion and ischemia. Altered vasoactivity is a major characteristic of cardiovascular and oncological diseases, and many therapies are therefore targeted to the vasculature. Therapeutics which are selective for the diseased vasculature are ideal, but whole-body selectivity of a therapeutic is challenging to assess in practice. Vessel myography is used to determine the functional mechanisms and evaluate pharmacological responses of vascularly-targeted therapeutics. However, myography can only be performed on ex vivo sections of individual arteries. We have developed methods for implementation of spherical-view photoacoustic tomography for non-invasive and in vivo myography. Using photoacoustic tomography, we demonstrate the measurement of acute vascular reactivity in the systemic vasculature and the placenta of female pregnant mice in response to two vasodilators. Photoacoustic tomography simultaneously captures the significant acute vasodilation of major arteries and detects selective vasoactivity of the maternal-fetal vasculature. Background: Mechanomyography is the traditional gold standard research technique for quantitative assessment of neuromuscular blockade. Mechanomyography directly measures the isometric force generated by the thumb in response to ulnar nerve stimulation. Researchers must construct their own mechanomyographs since commercial instruments are no longer available. A mechanomyograph was constructed, and its performance was compared against an archival mechanomyography system from the 1970s that utilized an FT-10 Grass force transducer, hypothesizing that train-of-four ratios recorded on each device would be equivalent., Methods: A mechanomyograph was constructed using 3D-printed components and modern electronics. An archival mechanomyography system was assembled from original components, including an FT-10 Grass force transducer. Signal digitization for computerized data collection was utilized instead of the original paper strip chart recorder. Both devices were calibrated with standard weights to demonstrate linear voltage response curves. The mechanomyographs were affixed to opposite arms of patients undergoing surgery, and the train-of-four ratio was measured during the onset and recovery from rocuronium neuromuscular blockade., Results: Calibration measurements exhibited a positive linear association between voltage output and calibration weights with a linear correlation coefficient of 1.00 for both mechanomyography devices. The new mechanomyograph had better precision and measurement sensitivity than the archival system: 5.3 mV versus 15.5 mV and 1.6 mV versus 5.7 mV, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). A total of 767 pairs of train-of-four ratio measurements obtained from eight patients had positive linear association (R 2 = 0.94; P < 0.001). Bland-Altman analysis resulted in bias of 3.8% and limits of agreement of -13% and 21%., Conclusions: The new mechanomyograph resulted in similar train-of-four ratio measurements compared to an archival mechanomyography system utilizing an FT-10 Grass force transducer. The ability to estimate user intention from surface electromyogram (sEMG) signals is a crucial aspect in the design of powered prosthetics. Recently, researchers have been using regression techniques to connect the user's intent, as expressed through sEMG signals, to the force applied at the fingertips in order to achieve a natural and accurate form of control. However, there are still challenges associated with processing sEMG signals that need to be overcome to allow for widespread and clinical implementation of upper limb prostheses. As a result, alternative modalities functioning as promising control signals have been proposed as source of control input rather than the sEMG, such as Acoustic Myography (AMG). In this study, six high sensitivity array microphones were used to acquire AMG signals, with custom-built 3D printed microphone housing. To tackle the challenge of extracting the relevant information from AMG signals, the Wavelet Scattering Transform (WST) was utilized. alongside a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network model for predicting the force from the AMG. The subjects were asked to use a hand dynamometer to measure the changes in force and correlate that to the force predicted by using the AMG features. Seven subjects were recruited for data collection in this study, using hardware designed by the research team. the performance results showed that the WST-LSTM model can be robustly utilized across varying window sizes and testing schemes, to achieve average NRMSE results of approximately 8%. These pioneering results suggest that AMG signals can be utilized to reliably estimate the force levels that the muscles are applying.Clinical Relevance- This research presents a new method for controlling upper limb prostheses using Acoustic Myography (AMG) signals. A novel method mapping the AMG signals to force applied by the corresponding muscles is developed. The presented findings have the potential to lead to the development of more natural and accurate control of human-machine interfaces.

Age-related deficits in skeletal muscle function, termed sarcopenia, are due to loss of muscle mass and changes in the intrinsic mechanisms underlying contraction. Sarcopenia is associated with falls, functional decline, and mortality. Electrical impedance myography (EIM)-a minimally invasive, rapid electrophysiological tool-can be applied to animals and humans to monitor muscle health, thereby serving as a biomarker in both preclinical and clinical studies. EIM has been successfully employed in several species; however, the application of EIM to the assessment of zebrafish-a model organism amenable to high-throughput experimentation-has not been reported. Here, we demonstrated differences in EIM measures between the skeletal muscles of young (6 months of age) and aged (33 months of age) zebrafish. For example, EIM phase angle and reactance at 2 kHz showed significantly decreased phase angle (5.3 ± 2.1 versus 10.7 ± 1.5°; p = 0.001) and reactance (89.0 ± 3.9 versus 172.2 ± 54.8 ohms; p = 0.007) in aged versus young animals. Total muscle area, in addition to other morphometric features, was also strongly correlated to EIM 2 kHz phase angle across both groups (r = 0.7133, p = 0.01). Moreover, there was a strong correlation between 2 kHz phase angle and established metrics of zebrafish swimming performance, including turn angle, angular velocity, and lateral motion (r = 0.7253, r = 0.7308, r = 0.7857, respectively, p < 0.01 for all). In addition, the technique was shown to have high reproducibility between repeated measurements with a mean percentage difference of 5.34 ± 1.17% for phase angle. These relationships were also confirmed in a separate replication cohort. Together, these findings establish EIM as a fast, sensitive method for quantifying zebrafish muscle function and quality. Using force myography (FMG) to monitor volumetric changes in limb muscles is a promising and effective alternative for controlling bio-robotic prosthetic devices. In recent years, there has been a focus on developing new methods to improve the performance of FMG technology in the control of bio-robotic devices. This study aimed to design and evaluate a novel low-density FMG (LD-FMG) armband for controlling upper limb prostheses. The study investigated the number of sensors and sampling rate for the newly developed LD-FMG band. The performance of the band was evaluated by detecting nine gestures of the hand, wrist, and forearm at varying elbow and shoulder positions. Six subjects, including both fit and amputated individuals, participated in this study and completed two experimental protocols: static and dynamic. The static protocol measured volumetric changes in forearm muscles at the fixed elbow and shoulder positions. In contrast, the dynamic protocol included continuous motion of the elbow and shoulder joints. The results showed that the number of sensors significantly impacts gesture prediction accuracy, with the best accuracy achieved on the 7-sensor FMG band arrangement. Compared to the number of sensors, the sampling rate had a lower influence on prediction accuracy. Additionally, variations in limb position greatly affect the classification accuracy of gestures. The static protocol shows an accuracy above 90% when considering nine gestures. Among dynamic results, shoulder movement shows the least classification error compared to elbow and elbow-shoulder (ES) movements.

Background: To compare electrical impedance myography (EIM) and MRI in assessing lumbar skeletal muscle composition., Methods: One hundred forty-one patients (78 females, mean age 57 ± 19 years) were prospectively enrolled and underwent lumbar spine MRI, EIM with Skulpt®, and clinical evaluation including the questionnaire SARC-F. MRIs were reviewed to assess the Goutallier score of paravertebral muscles at L3 level and to calculate the cross sectional area (CSA) of both psoas, quadratus lumborum, erector spinae, and multifidus muscles on a single axial slice at L3 level, in order to calculate the skeletal muscle index (SMI=CSA/height 2 ). We tested the correlation between EIM-derived parameters [body fat percentage (BF%) and muscle quality] and body mass index (BMI), Goutallier score (1-4), SMI, and SARC-F scores (0-10) using the Pearson correlation coefficient. The strength of association was considered large (0.5 to 1.0), medium (0.3 to 0.5), small (0.1 to 0.3)., Results: Pearson's correlation coefficient showed small (0.26) but significant (p < 0.01) positive correlation between BF% obtained with EIM and Goutallier score. Small negative correlation (- 0.22, p < 0.01) was found between EIM muscle quality and Goutallier Score. Large negative correlation (- 0.56, p < 0.01) was found between SMI and Goutallier Score, while SMI showed small negative correlation with SARC-F (- 0.29, p < 0.01). Medium positive correlation was found between Goutallier Score and SARC-F (0.41, p < 0.01). BMI showed medium positive correlation with SMI (r = 0.369, p < 0.01) and small correlation with EIM muscle quality (r = - 0.291, p < 0.05) and BF% (r = 0.227, p < 0.05). We found a substantial increase of the strength of associations of BF% and muscle quality with Goutallier in the 18-40 years (r = 0.485 and r = - 0.401, respectively) and in the 41-70 years group (r = 0.448 and r = - 0.365, respectively)., Conclusions: Muscle quality and BF% measured by EIM device showed only small strength of correlation with other quantitative parameters for assessing muscle mass and fat infiltration. Interesting results have been found in younger patients, but Skulpt Chisel™ should be applied cautiously to assess lumbar skeletal muscle composition. Small volume chamber tensometric myography is a commonly used technique to evaluate the vascular contractility of small and large blood vessels in laboratory animals and small arteries isolated from human tissue. The technique allows researchers to maintain isolated blood vessels in a tightly controlled and standardized (near-physiological) setting, with the option of adjusting to various environmental factors, while challenging the isolated vessels with different pharmacological agents that can induce vasoconstriction or vasodilation. The myograph chamber also provides a platform to measure vascular reactivity in response to various hormones, inhibitors, and agonists that may impact the function of smooth muscle and endothelial layers separately or simultaneously. The blood vessel wall is a complex structure consisting of three different layers: the intima (endothelial layer), media (smooth muscle and elastin fibers), and adventitia (collagen and other connective tissue). To gain a clear understanding of the functional properties of each layer, it is critical to have access to an experimental platform and system that would allow for a combinational approach to study all three layers simultaneously. Such an approach demands access to a semi-physiological condition that would mimic the in vivo environment in an ex vivo setting. Small volume chamber tensometric myography has provided an ideal environment to evaluate the impact of environmental cues, experimental variables, or pharmacological agonists and antagonists on vascular properties. For many years, scientists have used the tensometric myograph technique to measure endothelial function and smooth muscle contractility in response to different agents. In this report, a small volume chamber tensometric myograph system is used to measure endothelial function in the isolated mouse aorta. This report focuses on how small volume chamber tensometric myography can be used to evaluate the functional integrity of the endothelium in small segments of a large artery such as the thoracic aorta.

Wearables developed for human body signal detection receive increasing attention in the current decade. Compared to implantable sensors, wearables are more focused on body motion detection, which can support human-machine interaction (HMI) and biomedical applications. In wearables, electromyography (EMG)-, force myography (FMG)-, and electrical impedance tomography (EIT)-based body information monitoring technologies are broadly presented. In the literature, all of them have been adopted for many similar application scenarios, which easily confuses researchers when they start to explore the area. Hence, in this article, we review the three technologies in detail, from basics including working principles, device architectures, interpretation algorithms, application examples, merits and drawbacks, to state-of-the-art works, challenges remaining to be solved and the outlook of the field. We believe the content in this paper could help readers create a whole image of designing and applying the three technologies in relevant scenarios.

Objective: Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is a promising biomarker for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A key issue is how best to utilise the complex high dimensional, multi-frequency data output by EIM to fully characterise the progression of disease., Methods: Muscle volume conduction properties were obtained from EIM recordings of the tongue across three electrode configurations and 14 input frequencies (76 Hz-625 kHz). Analyses of individual frequencies, averaged EIM spectra and non-negative tensor factorisation were undertaken. Longitudinal data were collected from 28 patients and 17 healthy volunteers at 3-monthly intervals for a maximum of 9 months. EIM was evaluated against the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R) bulbar sub-score, tongue strength and an overall bulbar disease burden score., Results: Longitudinal changes to individual patient EIM spectra demonstrated complex shifts in the spectral shape. At a group level, a clear pattern emerged over time, characterised by an increase in centre frequency and general shift to the right of the spectral shape. Tensor factorisation reduced the spectral data from a total of 168 data points per participant per recording to a single value which captured the complexity of the longitudinal data and which we call tensor EIM (T-EIM). The absolute change in tensor EIM significantly increased within 3 months and continued to do so over the 9-month study duration. In a hypothetical clinical trial scenario tensor EIM required fewer participants (n = 64 at 50% treatment effect), than single frequency measures (n range 87-802) or ALSFRS-R bulbar subscore (n = 298)., Conclusions: Changes to tongue EIM spectra over time in ALS are complex. Tensor EIM captured and quantified disease progression and was more sensitive to changes than single frequency EIM measures and other biomarkers of bulbar disease., Significance: Objective biomarkers for the assessment of bulbar disease in ALS are lacking. Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is a convenient technique that can be used in preclinical and clinical studies to assess muscle tissue health and disease. EIM is obtained by applying a low-intensity, directionally focused, electrical current to a muscle of interest across a range of frequencies (i.e., from 1 kHz to 10 MHz) and recording the resulting voltages. From these, several standard impedance components, including the reactance, resistance, and phase, are obtained. When performing ex vivo measurements on excised muscle, the inherent passive electrical properties of the tissue, namely the conductivity and relative permittivity, can also be calculated. EIM has been used extensively in animals and humans to diagnose and track muscle alterations in a variety of diseases, in relation to simple disuse atrophy, or as a measure of therapeutic intervention. Clinically, EIM offers the potential to track disease progression over time and to assess the impact of therapeutic interventions, thus offering the opportunity to shorten the clinical trial duration and reduce sample size requirements. Because it can be performed noninvasively or minimally invasively in living animal models as well as humans, EIM offers the potential to serve as a novel translational tool enabling both preclinical and clinical development. This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to perform in vivo and ex vivo EIM measurements in mice and rats, including approaches to adapt the techniques to specific conditions, such as for use in pups or obese animals.

Sarcopenia is a wild chronic disease among elderly people. Although it does not entail a life-threatening risk, it will increase the adverse risk due to the associated unsteady gait, fall, fractures, and functional disability. The import factors in diagnosing sarcopenia are muscle mass and strength. The examination of muscle mass must be carried in the clinic. However, the loss of muscle mass can be improved by rehabilitation that can be performed in non-medical environments. Electronic impedance myography (EIM) can measure some parameters of muscles that have the correlations with muscle mass and strength. The goal of this study is to use machine learning algorithms to estimate the total mass of thigh muscles (MoTM) with the parameters of EIM and body information. We explored the seven major muscles of lower limbs. The feature selection methods, including recursive feature elimination (RFE) and feature combination, were used to select the optimal features based on the ridge regression (RR) and support vector regression (SVR) models. The optimal features were the resistance of rectus femoris normalized by the thigh circumference, phase of tibialis anterior combined with the gender, and body information, height, and weight. There were 96 subjects involved in this study. The performances of estimating the MoTM used the regression coefficient ( r 2 ) and root-mean-square error (RMSE), which were 0.800 and 0.929, and 1.432 kg and 0.980 kg for RR and SVR models, respectively. Thus, the proposed method could have the potential to support people examining their muscle mass in non-medical environments.

Complications related to neuromuscular blockade (NMB) could occur during anesthesia induction, maintenance, and emergency. It is recommended that neuromuscular monitoring techniques be utilized perioperatively to avoid adverse outcomes. However, current neuromuscular monitoring methods possess different shortcomings. They are cumbersome to use, susceptible to disturbances, and have limited alternative monitoring sites. Phonomyography (PMG) monitoring based on the acoustic signals yielded by skeletal muscle contraction is emerging as an interesting and innovative method. This technique is characterized by its convenience, stable signal quality, and multimuscle recording ability and shows great potential in the application field. This review summarizes the progression of PMG on perioperative neuromuscular monitoring chronologically and presents the merits, demerits, and challenges of PMG-based equipment, aiming at underscoring the potential of PMG-based apparatuses for neuromuscular monitoring.

Wire myography enables the investigation of vascular tone and function of small vessels. The vessel of interest is harvested from the experimental model of choice, and then mounted as ring preparations onto a four-channel wire myograph. This technique enables ex vivo measurements of isometric response of vessels to different pharmacological agents. Here we describe in detail how to dissect, mount, and normalize vessels for the wire myography technique. We will also provide examples of how to construct concentration-response curves to a contractile and vasodilatory pharmacological agent., (© 2022. The objective of this study was to evaluate the interrater and intrarater reliability of electrical impedance myography (EIM) using handheld sensors of different sizes. Electrical impedance myography of the biceps brachii muscle of twenty healthy individuals was performed by two raters using both large and small sensors. The procedures were also repeated 5 to 8 days after the first recording session. The repeatability of the resistance, reactance, and phase angle at two different current frequencies (50 and 100 kHz) was assessed by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The ICCs of the large sensor were higher than those of the small sensor for both the intrarater and interrater reliabilities. High-frequency current tended to improve the ICC for the small sensor. These results indicate reasonable repeatability of the handheld electrode arrays for EIM measurements. Acceleromyography at the adductor pollicis located in a distal part of the body may not reflect the degree of neuromuscular blockade (NMB) at the proximally located muscles manipulated during lumbar surgery. We investigated the usefulness and characteristics of acceleromyographic monitoring at the trapezius for providing moderate NMB during lumbar surgery. Fifty patients were randomized to maintain a train-of-four count 1-3 using acceleromyography at the adductor pollicis (group A; n = 25) or the trapezius (group T; n = 25). Total rocuronium dose administered intraoperatively [mean ± SD, 106.4 ± 31.3 vs. 74.1 ± 17.6 mg; P < 0.001] and surgical satisfaction (median [IQR], 7 [5-8] vs. 5 [4-5]; P < 0.001) were significantly higher in group T than group A. Lumbar retractor pressure (88.9 ± 12.0 vs. 98.0 ± 7.8 mmHg; P = 0.003) and lumbar muscle tone in group T were significantly lower than group A. Time to maximum block with an intubating dose was significantly shorter in group T than group A (44 [37-54] vs. 60 [55-65] sec; P < 0.001). Other outcomes were comparable. Acceleromyography at the trapezius muscle during lumbar surgery required a higher rocuronium dose for moderate NMB than the adductor pollicis muscle, thereby the consequent deeper NMB provided better surgical conditions. The measurement of vascular function in isolated vessels has revealed important insights into the structural, functional, and biomechanical features of the normal and diseased cardiovascular system and has provided a molecular understanding of the cells that constitutes arteries and veins and their interaction. Further, this approach has allowed the discovery of vital pharmacological treatments for cardiovascular diseases. However, the expansion of the vascular physiology field has also brought new concerns over scientific rigor and reproducibility. Therefore, it is appropriate to set guidelines for the best practices of evaluating vascular function in isolated vessels. These guidelines are a comprehensive document detailing the best practices and pitfalls for the assessment of function in large and small arteries and veins. Herein, we bring together experts in the field of vascular physiology with the purpose of developing guidelines for evaluating ex vivo vascular function. By using this document, vascular physiologists will have consistency among methodological approaches, producing more reliable and reproducible results.

Nitric oxide (NO) is essential in the control of fetoplacental vascular tone, maintaining a high flow-low resistance circulation that favors oxygen and nutrient delivery to the fetus. Reduced fetoplacental blood flow is associated with pregnancy complications and is one of the major causes of fetal growth restriction (FGR). The reduction of dietary nitrate to nitrite and subsequently NO may provide an alternative source of NO in vivo. We have previously shown that nitrite induces vasorelaxation in placental blood vessels from normal pregnancies, and that this effect is enhanced under conditions of hypoxia. Herein, we aimed to determine whether nitrite could also act as a vasodilator in FGR. Using wire myography, vasorelaxant effects of nitrite were assessed on pre-constricted chorionic plate arteries (CPAs) and veins (CPVs) from normal and FGR pregnancies under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Responses to the NO donor, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), were assessed in parallel. Nitrate and nitrite concentrations were measured in fetal plasma. Hypoxia significantly enhanced vasorelaxation to nitrite in FGR CPAs ( p < 0.001), and in both normal ( p < 0.001) and FGR ( p < 0.01) CPVs. Vasorelaxation to SNP was also potentiated by hypoxia in both normal ( p < 0.0001) and FGR ( p < 0.01) CPVs. However, compared to vessels from normal pregnancies, CPVs from FGR pregnancies showed significantly lower reactivity to SNP ( p < 0.01). Fetal plasma concentrations of nitrate and nitrite were not different between normal and FGR pregnancies. Together, these data show that nitrite-mediated vasorelaxation is preserved in FGR, suggesting that interventions targeting this pathway have the potential to improve fetoplacental blood flow in FGR pregnancies.

Abstract The present study investigated the relationship between local fat percentage (SK fat ) and muscle quality (MQ) estimated by a new hand-held electrical impedance myography ( h EIM) device or derived from ultrasound and strength assessments. The right anterior thigh of 90 healthy participants (mean ± SD; age=22.9 ± 2.9 years; 45 men: BMI = 23.9 ± 2.4 kgm -2 ; 45 women: BMI = 21.1 ± 1.9 kgm -2 ) was scanned by h EIM and ultrasound. Correlations between SK fat , local subcutaneous fat (SUB fat ), and echo intensity (EI us ) were explored. Correlations between MQ, EI us , quadriceps femoris anatomical cross-sectional area (ACSA QF ), knee extensors maximum voluntary isometric torque (T), T/ACSA QF , EI us /SUB fat , and ACSA QF /SUB fat were also assessed. SK fat correlated with SUB fat ( r  = 0.88; p  < 0.001) and EI us ( r  = 0.64; p  < 0.001). MQ correlated with EI us ( r  = -0.66; p  < 0.001), ACSA QF ( r  = 0.37; p  < 0.001), EI us /SUB fat ( r  = 0.37; p  < 0.001), and ACSA QF /SUB fat ( r  = 0.81; p  < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that SUB fat , EI us , and sex explained 86% of SK fat variance, whereas ACSA QF /SUB fat , sex and EI us explained 75% of MQ variance. In conclusion, high h EIM local fat percentage relates to greater subcutaneous fat and intramuscular non-contractile tissue content. High h EIM muscle quality relates to greater muscle-size:subcutaneous-fat ratio and contractile tissue content. Sex influences the prediction of both parameters. This h EIM device seems to be useful to estimate local thigh composition.

Several techniques are available to assess muscle tissue status, including electrical impedance myography (EIM). Despite being used in the assessment of neuromuscular status in injury and response to exercise, reliability data for hamstrings muscles are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the test-retest reliability of EIM components on hamstrings. Twenty-one healthy males (25.3 ± 3.4 years; 173 ± 6.7 cm; and 79.7 ± 15.9 kg) volunteered for this study. Subjects completed two visits, separated by seven days to collect EIM components (resistance, reactance, impedance, and phase angle) in the longitudinal and transversal axis of hamstrings in both thighs, using a bioimpedance device and Ag/AgCL adhesive contact electrodes. The electrode arrangement was in the muscular belly, half the distance between origin and insertion of the hamstrings. Reliability was determined by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), minimal detectable change (MDC), and Bland-Altman plots. We observed high to excellent reliability (ICC > 0.85) between all EIM components, except for reactance with MDC ranged from 2.0 to 10.8 and the mean bias in Bland-Altman plots ranged from -0.02 to 2.48 (95% limits of agreement from -9.98 to 11.20). From our findings, the hamstrings assessment using EIM technique is reliable to assess muscle tissue; therefore, it enables the evaluation of changes/adaptations in clinical and applied contexts., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Deep tendon reflexes are one of the main components of the clinical nervous system examinations. These assessments are inexpensive and quick. However, evaluation can be subjective and qualitative. This study aimed to objectively evaluate hyperreflexia of the patellar tendon reflex using portable mechanomyography (MMG) and electromyography (EMG) devices. This study included 10 preoperative patients (20 legs) who had a pathology that could cause bilateral patellar tendon hyperreflexia and 12 healthy volunteers (24 legs) with no prior history of neurological disorders. We attached MMG/EMG sensors onto the quadriceps and tapped the patellar tendon with maximal and constant force. Our results showed a significantly high amplitude of the root mean square (RMS) and low frequency of the mean power frequency (MPF) in the rectus femoris, vastus medialis, and vastus lateralis muscles in both EMG and MMG with both maximal and constant force. Especially in the patients with cervical and thoracic myelopathy, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for diagnosing hyperreflexia of the patellar tendon showed a moderate to very high area under the curve for all EMG-RMS, EMG-MPF, MMG-RMS, and MMG-MPF values. The use of EMG and MMG for objectively quantifying the patellar tendon reflex is simple and desirable for future clinical applications and could help diagnose neurological disorders.

This research has proved that mechanomyographic (MMG) signals can be used for evaluating muscle performance. Stimulation of the lost physiological functions of a muscle using an electrical signal has been determined crucial in clinical and experimental settings in which voluntary contraction fails in stimulating specific muscles. Previous studies have already indicated that characterizing contractile properties of muscles using MMG through neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) showed excellent reliability. Thus, this review highlights the use of MMG signals on evaluating skeletal muscles under electrical stimulation. In total, 336 original articles were identified from the Scopus and SpringerLink electronic databases using search keywords for studies published between 2000 and 2020, and their eligibility for inclusion in this review has been screened using various inclusion criteria. After screening, 62 studies remained for analysis, with two additional articles from the bibliography, were categorized into the following: (1) fatigue, (2) torque, (3) force, (4) stiffness, (5) electrode development, (6) reliability of MMG and NMES approaches, and (7) validation of these techniques in clinical monitoring. This review has found that MMG through NMES provides feature factors for muscle activity assessment, highlighting standardized electromyostimulation and MMG parameters from different experimental protocols. Despite the evidence of mathematical computations in quantifying MMG along with NMES, the requirement of the processing speed, and fluctuation of MMG signals influence the technique to be prone to errors. Interestingly, although this review does not focus on machine learning, there are only few studies that have adopted it as an alternative to statistical analysis in the assessment of muscle fatigue, torque, and force. The results confirm the need for further investigation on the use of sophisticated computations of features of MMG signals from electrically stimulated muscles in muscle function assessment and assistive technology such as prosthetics control.

Background: Electrical impedance myography (EIM) provides insight into muscle composition and structure. We sought to evaluate its use in a mouse obesity model characterized by myofiber atrophy., Methods: We applied a prediction algorithm, ie, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), to surface, needle array, and ex vivo EIM data from db/db and wild-type mice and assessed myofiber cross-sectional area (CSA) histologically and triglyceride (TG) content biochemically., Results: EIM data from all three modalities provided acceptable predictions of myofiber CSA with average root mean square error (RMSE) of 15% in CSA (ie, ±209 μm 2 for a mean CSA of 1439 μm 2 ) and TG content with RMSE of 30% in TG content (ie, ±7.3 nmol TG/mg muscle for a mean TG content of 25.4 nmol TG/mg muscle)., Conclusions: EIM combined with a predictive algorithm provides reasonable estimates of myofiber CSA and TG content without the need for biopsy., (© 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

In spite of the growing use of the electrical impedance myography (EIM) measures for clinical assessment and follow-up of diseased muscle tissue, reliability studies are scarce. We evaluate the reliability of the (EIM) technique using four adhesive electrodes over the muscle of interest. Intra- and inter-rater reliability was studied within the same session and between sessions. Thirty-one healthy and volunteer subjects aged between 20 and 26 years were recruited. Phase angle, reactance and resistance were assessed for each EIM measurement. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to determine the relative reliability. Absolute reliability was expressed as the standard error of measurement and the minimum detectable change. Relative reliability within the same session and between sessions for the EIM technique was excellent (ICCs > 0.9) concerning both intra- and inter-rater reliability, except for the component reactance. The absolute reliability was very high for the three EIM components. EIM measures using four adhesive electrodes over the area of interest is a reliable technique to assess muscle tissue status. This study confirms that these measurement results barely vary depending on the examiner and the moment. Context: It has been recently demonstrated that tissue flossing around the ankle joint can be effectively used to improve ankle range of motion, jump, and sprint ability. However, there is a lack of studies investigating the acute effects of tissue flossing applied using different wrapping pressures., Objective: To investigate the acute effects of tissue flossing and the degree of floss band pressure, around the upper thigh on knee range of motion, strength, and muscle contractile characteristics., Design: Crossover design in 3 distinct sessions., Setting: University laboratory., Participants: A total of 19 recreationally trained volunteers (age 23.8[4.8] y) participated in this study., Intervention: Active knee extension and flexion performed for 3 sets of 2 minutes (2-min rest between sets with wrapped upper thigh). Individualized wrapping pressures were applied to create conditions of high and moderate vascular occlusion, while a loose band application served as a control condition., Main Outcome Measures: Participants were assessed for active straight leg raise test; tensiomyography displacement and contraction time for rectus femoris, vastus medialis, and biceps femoris muscles; and maximum voluntary contractions for knee extensors and flexors for pre, after, and 30 minutes after applying the floss band., Results: There was a statistically significant increase in maximum voluntary contractions for knee extensors and a significant shortening in rectus femoris contraction time for the moderate condition, which was associated with small to medium effects in favor of the moderate condition. There were no statistically significant changes observed between control and high conditions. The active straight leg raise test was unaffected regardless of intervention., Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that tissue flossing around the upper thigh might have a localized as well as pressure-sensitive response, thereby improving neuromuscular function of the knee extensors.

Background: Available methods for studying muscle dynamics, including electromyography (EMG), mechanomyography (MMG) and M-mode ultrasound, have limitations in terms of spatial resolution., Methods: This study developed a novel method/protocol of two-dimensional mapping of muscle motion onset using ultrafast ultrasound imaging, i.e., sono-mechano-myo-graphy (SMMG). The developed method was compared with the EMG, MMG and force outputs of tibialis anterior (TA) muscle during ankle dorsiflexion at different percentages of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force in healthy young adults., Results: Significant differences between all pairwise comparisons of onsets were identified, except between SMMG and MMG. The EMG onset significantly led SMMG, MMG and force onsets by 40.0 ± 1.7 ms ( p < 0.001), 43.1 ± 5.2 ms ( p < 0.005) and 73.0 ± 4.5 ms ( p < 0.001), respectively. Muscle motion also started earlier at the middle aponeurosis than skin surface and deeper regions when viewed longitudinally ( p < 0.001). No significant effect of force level on onset delay was found., Conclusions: This study introduced and evaluated a new method/protocol, SMMG, for studying muscle dynamics and demonstrated its feasibility for muscle contraction onset research. This novel technology can potentially provide new insights for future studies of neuromuscular diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy.

Purpose : The aim of this study was to determine the changes in neuromuscular contractile properties in elite cyclists associated to the peripheral fatigue produced in a maximal incremental test in cycle ergometer. Methods : Forty-eight volunteers' well-trained male cyclists were evaluated during the competition season within a recovery microcycle. Tensiomyography was used before and after performing an incremental test until exhaustion in cycle ergometer to measure the radial muscle belly displacement of the vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris (RF), and biceps femoris (BF) on the dominant leg. Maximum radial muscle belly displacement (Dm), contraction time (Tc), delay time (Td), sustain time (Ts), and radial displacement velocity (Vrd) were measured. Mixed-design factorial analysis of variance was used to detect changes in the mechanical and neuromuscular characteristics after a maximal incremental exercise test. Results : The results show in the evaluated muscles a moderate-large decrease ( p < .01, η2 = 0.06-0.51) in Tc, Td, Dm, Ts, and Vrd. This decrease occurs more sharply in the BF than in RF or VL. Conclusion : An incremental effort until exhaustion produces peripheral fatigue associated with a decrease in Dm, Tc, Td, Ts, and Vrd, being more pronounced in biceps femoris than in vastus lateralis and rectus femoris. Coaches can use these changes found in the contractile properties as a reference to detect the muscle fatigue degree that certain training models pose for the cyclist.

Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is as an experimental technique that associates muscle impedance with muscular activity. Changes in muscle impedance during contraction occur mainly due to changes in the morphological and physiological characteristics of muscles that lead to different impeditivities in comparison with the resting condition. There is no consensus on the details of muscular impedance during muscle activity. EIM measurements on humans are also influenced by factors such as the electrode-skin interface, layers of skin and fat, and the connective tissue that can generate undesirable effects in the impedance signal. These effects can be avoided if EIM measurements are carried out directly on the muscle by using the models of animals. This study investigates changes in the EIM signal in the gastrocnemius muscles of Wistar rats during different levels of muscular contraction. In vivo experiments were conducted on 19 male rats. The muscle was exposed, fixed on a load cell, and electrically stimulated to evoke different levels of muscle contraction. Signals of the components of impedance were analyzed against the muscular force signal. The results show moderate correlations (p < 0.05) among the impedance-related parameters of resistance (r = -0.76), reactance (r = 0.57), and phase (r = 0.53). In addition to providing an experimental protocol for the invasive collection of data on electrical impedance to minimize problems associated with surface electrodes, this study shows that of the components of impedance, resistance is most affected by the intensity of muscular contractions and that morphological changes influence impedance mainly at low intensities.
