[EN] This paper deals with the first hypotheses of elevations and of the architectural analysis of San Ildefonso’s Baths on the basis of unpublished data offered by the Book of written descriptive records (apeos) of 1542 in the Chapter on Seville Cathedral. Our own transformation methodology has been applied to this hitherto largely unknown book in order to attain and encompass graphic representation from the literary description. After giving a brief history of the Baths, the objective is to ascertain its location, by drawing hypothetical floor plans and elevations and analysing its typology, dimensions, spaces, and building elements. Milling wheat, making dough, kneading and cooking bread were daily activities in 16th-Century Seville. These works were carried out in the flour mills (asientos de atahona) and in the ovens (both domestic and commercial), which could either be part of a house or constitute their own space. According to the written and graphic documentary sources consulted, they were buildings scattered around the city, with rigging, construction elements and spaces typical of the trade: atahona stones, haystacks, stables, wooden shelves, benches, oven vaults, chambers or rooms for storing firewood, mezzanines and in most cases wells. The typological analysis is supported by plan drawings of the buildings based on the descriptions of the surveys. Moler el trigo, hacer la masa para el pan, amasarla y cocerla eran actividades cotidianas en la Sevilla del siglo XVI que se realizaban en los asientos de atahonas y en los hornos (tanto domésticos como comerciales), que bien podían formar parte de una casa o constituir un espacio propio. Según nos indican las fuentes documentales escritas y gráficas consultadas, eran inmuebles repartidos por la ciudad, con aparejos, elementos constructivos y espacios propios del oficio: piedras de atahona, pajares, caballerizas, estantes de madera, poyos, capillas o bóvedas de los hornos, cámaras o palacios para almacenar la leña, entresuelos y en la mayoría de los casos pozos. El análisis arquitectónico de estas tipologías edificatorias se apoya en dibujos en planta de los inmuebles basados en las descripciones de los apeos.

Estas son algunas de las preguntas a las que este libro intenta dar respuesta. Se hace desde los datos que la documentación de archivo aporta, brindando un panorama hasta ahora poco explorado. En general, no se trata de grandes casas de familias nobles, algunas de las cuales han llegado hasta nuestros días, sino que preferentemente damos luz a la gente común y a un patrimonio desaparecido, pues muchas de sus viviendas han ido sucumbiendo ante el inexorable paso del tiempo. Nos sumergimos en analizar cómo vivían panaderos, confiteros o tejedores. Desde esclavos a mercaderes, sin olvidarnos de algunas clases de mayor rango y linaje que aparecen en los documentos. Seville experienced great splendour during the 16th Century as the European centre for trade with the Americas. At that time, religious institutions and charitable hospitals gathered significant real-estate heritage. To facilitate its management, literary documents called apeos were drawn up, which exhaustively and reliably described the main architectural features of the buildings, including their general measurements. In this research, approximately 1,700 of these apeos, conserved in various archives of Seville, are studied.A new methodology of architectural graphic analysis has been followed in order to understand the organisation of spaces in 16th–Century Sevillian domestic life: historical texts have been turned into drawings. In addition, information on the architectural elements described has been compiled using databases. To draw the plans, it was necessary to locate the current lot of each property. In certain cases, schematic elevations and volumes have also been drawn. By taking into account the uses and areas, a typological classification into four groups has been made: houses, courtyard tenement housing, inns, and shops. Their main architectural characteristics have been identified through the application of comparative graphic diagrams. Finally, all the information has been superimposed over street plans of the city after considering its urban evolution. In this way, different items of data have been spatially related and a global vision of the transformations and permanence over time is provided. Este artículo se centra en el estudio de las áreas comerciales de la ciudad de Sevilla en el siglo XVI. Se ha realizado un análisis urbano y de las tipologías edificatorias a partir de fuentes históricas y se han desarrollado hipótesis de levantamiento y restitución gráfica de algunos enclaves comerciales paradigmáticos, como son Las Gradas y las alcaicerías de Santa María la Mayor y de San Salvador, incluyendo usos, superficies, alturas y densidad de la edificación. The subject of this paper is the study of commercial areas in sixteenth-century Seville. An urban and typological analysis based on historical documents has been developed. In addition, hypothetical plans of the areas and the buildings at some of the most important trading sites such as Las Gradas and the alcaicerias of Santa María la Mayor and San Salvador have been made. This analysis includes surfaces, purposes, heights and density of the buildings.

Este artículo pretende poner de manifiesto las magníficas fuentes documentales existentes en los archivos para el estudio de la arquitectura doméstica en los siglos XVI y XVII, al mismo tiempo que propone, una vez obtenida la información procedente de los libros de apeos, una metodología novedosa para el análisis de dichos inmuebles. El resultado de la aplicación de esta metodología ha sido una base de datos con la información contenida en dichos apeos, que incluye: planos, localización por collación y calle, propietario, inquilino, oficio y condición del inquilino, orientación (cuando aparece), linderos (cuando se detallan), los espacios interiores que conforman las casas y sus descripciones y medidas. Se ha demostrado que este método mediante el análisis de la información contenida en esta base de datos es clave para el análisis de la arquitectura doméstica sevillana de los siglos XVI y XVII. This article aims to highlight the magnificent documentary sources existing in the archives for the study of the properties belonging to the charity hospitals in Seville during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries while proposes a new methodology for the analysis of these properties. It has been developed a database with the information contained in these surveys, including: plans, collacion and street, owner, tenant, trade and condition of the tenant, orientation (when presented), boundaries (when detailed), the interior spaces that make the houses and their descriptions and measurements. It has been shown that this method by analyzing the information in this database is key to the analysis of the Sevillian domestic architecture of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

[EN] This study is based on historical documents belonging to the most important ecclesiastical institution in Seville during the 16th century. The Cathedral’s archives have been consulted, with special focus on the section devoted to books of written descriptive records of houses (called ‘apeos’) that belonged to the Cabildo (Chapter) in 1542. These records not only documented the physical distribution of the houses with measurements in Castilian yards of the different parts of the house, but also described the more qualitative features of the interior architectural design. The main purpose of this study is to characterize the typical Sevillian houses from historical documents of the period focused on the collation of San Salvador. By way of a novel methodology, the following steps have been developed: first, an architectural analysis; second, a typology of houses based on functions, dimensions, construction, lay-out, etc.; third, a detailed glossary of architectural terms listed to permit a rigorous understanding of the domestic architecture in 16th century Seville; and finally, an example of every documented record has been drawn. Among the most significant conclusions is that the Sevillian dwellings of that period reflected the Islamic terminology, architecture, construction and lay-out typical of Andalusia, but with distinctive features of Sevillian housing., [ES] Este artículo sobre la arquitectura doméstica sevillana está basado en documentos históricos de las instituciones eclesiásticas más importantes de Sevilla en el siglo XVI, específicamente los libros de apeos de casas del Cabildo de 1542 del archivo Catedral de Sevilla. Estas fuentes no solo documentan la distribución espacial en varas castellanas sino también describen las características constructivas y dotaciones del interior de estas. El principal objetivo de este trabajo ha sido caracterizar el tipo de casa sevillana a partir de estos documentos históricos referidos a 46 casas de la céntrica collación de San Salvador. A partir de una metodología novedosa, en primer lugar, se ha realizado un análisis arquitectónico; en segundo lugar, se han establecido tipologías de espacios, usos, dimensiones, construcción, acabados, etc.; en tercer lugar, se ha elaborado un glosario de términos arquitectónicos propios de los alarifes que permite entender de manera rigurosa la arquitectura doméstica en Sevilla en el siglo de Oro; y, por último, se han incluido dibujos de cada apeo documentado para facilitar la caracterización del tipo de casa sevillana del siglo XVI. Entre las conclusiones a las que se han llegado destaca que las viviendas de este periodo conservan una terminología, arquitectura, construcción y acabados típicos de la Andalucía islámica, pero con características específicas del caserío sevillano, como por ejemplo la casapuerta.

Esta tesis doctoral se apoya en una base documental apenas conocida de cerca de 1.700 documentos o apeos del siglo XVI que describen inmuebles de la ciudad de Sevilla pertenecientes a la Catedral y a los hospitales de beneficencia del Amor de Dios, las Bubas, las Cinco Llagas, el Cardenal y el Espíritu Santo. Tras localizar, identificar y valorar dicha documentación se ha desarrollado una metodología propia de análisis para tratar la información aportada por dichas fuentes. Se han trascrito y volcado los textos en una base de datos, y a partir de éstos se han realizado dibujos con hipótesis en planta, alzado y volumetrías de gran parte de ellos, para facilitar su comprensión arquitectónica. Después se han agrupado en cuatro apartados atendiendo a su uso: casas, corrales de vecinos, mesones y tiendas. Ello ha permitido deducir sus principales invariantes o rasgos tipológicos, según las fuentes consultadas. Además, casi todos los inmuebles analizados se han identificado en el parcelario actual y se ha insertado su planta dentro de un plano hipotético de la Sevilla del siglo XVI que facilita su visión de conjunto. Por último, se ha aportado un glosario de más de 500 términos arquitectónicos y voces propios de los alarifes usados en la redacción de los apeos analizados. This doctoral thesis is based on 1700 barely known 16th century documents and surveys (books of written records of houses called ‘apeos’) which describe all kinds of buildings in the city of Seville belonging to the Cathedral and the charitable hospitals of Amor de Dios, Bubas, Cinco Llagas, El Cardenal and Espíritu Santo. After locating, identifying and evaluating the documentation, a special method of analysis has been developed to deal with the enormous amount of information provided by these sources. These texts describing the buildings have been transcribed and entered into a database and, from these, drawings have been made (including hypothetical distribution, elevation and volume plans) to facilitate the understanding of their original architecture. Then they have been grouped into four sections according to their use: houses, courtyard tenement housing (corrales), inns and shops. This has allowed us to deduce their main variants or typological features, based on the analyzed sources. In addition, almost all the studied properties have been identified and inserted in the current plans of the city to reconstruct a hypothetical plan of 16th century Seville that will facilitate an overall view of the time. Finally, a glossary of more than 500 specific terms of the alarifes (master builders) used in the analyzed surveys has been provided.
