SOCIAL marginality , *TEACHERS' assistants , *SCHOOL environment , *LEISURE , *EDUCATIONAL support - Abstract
In the last two decades, there has been a significant increase in the number of teaching assistants, as well as in the numbers of research papers focused on their work; however, the topic of teaching assistants working with socially disadvantaged students, who represent a very important student group in terms of numbers, has still not been very well explored. This study therefore focused on (1) the frequency of use and (2) the evaluation of the importance of partial areas of the teaching assistantsʼ work in supporting the education of socially disadvantaged students. The research was carried out through online questionnaires, involving 115 pedagogical staff members from schools with an above-average representation of socially disadvantaged students. In particular, the following areas of teaching assistantsʼ practice proved to be important as well as often used: (a) supporting students in acquiring social competencies and adapting to the school environment, (b) supporting students in preparing for teaching, (c) interventions in student behaviour, and (d) supporting students via tutoring. Th e respondents from schools where socially disadvantaged students makeup the majority of the student population then further emphasised the involvement of assistants in organising leisure activities for students and in communication with studentsʼ parents in the out-of-school environment. In conclusion, many different roles of teaching assistants are proved to be very important parts of the overall educational support provided to socially disadvantaged students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Romové představují nejpočetnější a současně nejvíce znevýhodněnou etnickou menšinu v Evropě.

There is much research into teachers' workplace wellbeing, but very little research investigating teacher assistants' wellbeing in the workplace – especially those who work in classrooms where students with a disability are present. Research among teachers has identified adaptability as a key to their workplace wellbeing. Following this research, among a sample of 128 teacher assistants who work in classrooms where students with a disability are present, we explored four workplace wellbeing outcomes (workplace enjoyment, participation, self-concept, and motivation) and the role of adaptability in predicting these wellbeing outcomes. Hierarchical path analysis showed that teacher assistants who were adaptable demonstrated significantly higher workplace enjoyment, participation, self-concept, and motivation. Findings suggest workplace adaptability as a critical element of workplace wellbeing for teacher assistants who support students with disability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DISTANCE education students , *SOCIAL marginality , *COVID-19 , *SCHOOL failure , *SCHOOL closings , *CLASSROOMS , *CLASSROOM environment - Abstract
Students with social disadvantages usually have low support for preparation for school in the family, come from a poor and poorly-motivating family environment, and are thus exposed to the risk of school failure even under normal conditions. At the time of school closures and the transition to distance learning, which demands technical equipment and parental support, the disadvantages of these students are multiplying. Th e research presented here aimed to fi nd out how schools with a higher number of socially disadvantaged students managed to provide education during the government-imposed ban on the presence of students in schools (in the spring of 2020, in response to the spread of the COVID-19 disease). Qualitatively-oriented research was carried out in the form of semi-structured interviews with teachers from six elementary schools and looked at both the barriers that schools encountered in the distance education of socially disadvantaged pupils and examples of good practice in the fi eld. Th e results of the research point to interesting and oft en innovative approaches of schools to distance learning of disadvantaged students in its online and offl ine forms;however, an important condition is always activity of superior quality on the part of the school and on the part of various other cooperating institutions. Th e aim of the presentation of examples of good practice is to point out the tried and tested strategies that could/should be replicated in the teaching of socially disadvantaged students by other schools in the possible subsequent re-closures of schools and transitions to distance learning. SOCIAL marginality , *TEACHERS' assistants , *SEMI-structured interviews , *SPECIAL education , *EDUCATIONAL support , *FACILITY management , *CAMPAIGN funds - Abstract
The education of students with special educational needs in mainstream schools in the Czech Republic is currently based mainly on a system of what are called support measures provided on the basis of recommendations from counselling facilities. The aim of the study presented here is to evaluate the effectiveness of this support system in the education of socially disadvantaged Roma students. The article presents data from qualitative research carried out in the form of semi-structured interviews with schools’ staff members and experts on the issue. The results of the research point to the following specific barriers in the functioning of the system of support measures for socially disadvantaged Roma pupils: a) teachers and counsellors are not able to sufficiently identify social disadvantage as a source of the student’s special educational needs; b) the whole process of diagnosing and recommending support measures is very time-consuming; c) the parents of socially disadvantaged students oft en do not go with their children to the counselling facility and thus they do not go through the diagnostic process and cannot obtain the necessary recommendation; (d)linking support measures to specific students is very unstable, particularly for schools with a large number of migrant students; e) the whole process is administratively demanding. Considering the conclusions and their comparison with findings from other professional sources, it is clear that in order to provide the necessary educational support (teaching assistants, special teachers, educational interventions, etc.) in schools with a larger number of socially disadvantaged Roma students, it is necessary to establish a more stable system of financing and providing support measures which would not be based on the need for diagnostics and recommendations from counselling facilities. With the development of the principles of inclusive education in the Czech educational system, it is possible to recognize the increasing importance of the profession of school special educators, who are providing the support for students with special educational needs and their teachers in mainstream schools. Traditionally, the role of school special educators is mainly focused on the education of pupils with disabilities, but the role of these professionals in relation to socially disadvantaged pupils is still relatively unclear. Th e text of the article describes the results of a qualitatively oriented study based on the content analysis of texts from six school special educators, supplemented by remarks from a group discussion with these professional workers. Th e presented results illustrate the importance of the school special educator’s profession in several specifi c areas of direct support for students with social disadvantage as well as in the area of counseling support for teachers and in the development of cooperation between school and out-of-school partners (counseling institutions, legal representatives of students). Th e research clearly suggests further personal and professional development of the school special educator’s profession in relation to students with social disadvantage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The implementation of the inclusive education model is one of the key issues of contemporary education in the Czech Republic, but in practice the promotion of the system of inclusive education oft en encounter diff erent views of educators - the described study therefore maps out attitudes to the phenomenon of inclusion among 174 teachers from six elementary schools in the Central Bohemian region. The data processed in the research was derived from texts created by teachers within workshops focused on inclusive education. The overall assessment of the phenomenon of inclusion among the participants slightly outweighed the negative attitudes: in the surveyed sample, 100 teachers disagreed with inclusive education, 66 participants agreed with inclusion in education and the remaining 8 teachers did not even agree or disagree. As a positive contribution to inclusive education, participants have stated that pupils with special educational needs learn to live in a common college and overcome natural obstacles, but also that other pupils learn solidarity, empathy and mutual co-operation. Opponents of inclusion emphasized that pupils with special educational needs would learn more in special schools, and that the presence of these pupils leads to a slowdown in the pace of teaching and lowering standard of teaching, and also mentioned the excessive demands placed on inadequately prepared teachers and a general unpreparedness of the educational system, accenting too high a number of pupils in classes. The results of the survey clearly show the need for further education of teachers in order to let them adopt the concept of inclusive education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Th e article builds on a research study describing the inadequate defi nition of indirect pedagogical activity in the content of the work of teachers' assistants, and reacts to recent legislative changes in this area. Th e author looks in detail at the amendment to the directive according to which indirect educational activity will now be set at a fi xed ten percent of the work commitment of an assistant, and indicates the reasons why this low time allocation to indirect educational activity will be entirely insuffi cient for many assistants (and their teachers and pupils). ComputingMilieux_COMPUTERSANDEDUCATION - Abstract
Currently, we are living in a time period that is full of changes in regards to our educational needs. These changes have caused increased societal demands on individuals, yet they hold out the possibility of success through continual learning and development. Globalization, the transition from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy, the exponential growth of information technology to bring together different social groups across society, and other factors are behind the important changes happening in our contemporary society. In so called knowledge society it is important to put individual at the center of the lifelong learning process and meet the individuals' need for further education in relation to individual demand. All this does not only put pressure on the education system but also on society and the business world. Business must create conditions and frameworks to accommodate their employees' 'growing skills and competence, and they must exploit the potential their employees bring with them. All this is reason why we don't talk about lifelong education but about lifelong learning. - Abstract
Th e use of a teacher assistant is one of the most signifi cant support measures in the education of students with special educational needs in the Czech Republic, as evidenced by increasing numbers of teaching assistants in Czech schools. Over the last six years, the number of teaching assistants in schools in the Czech Republic has more than doubled. In practice, however, many uncertainties remain in the way this profession is utilized. Th e authors present the fi ndings of the research study examining various aspects of the teaching assistant profession. Th ey focused on selected data characterizing the involvement of teaching assistants in the so-called indirect pedagogical activities, such as consultations with teachers, participation in educational meetings, assistance with the preparation of materials and other aids, consultation with carers of students. Despite the fact that the involvement of all school staff in these forms of activities in the Czech Republic is determined by law, the interviews with 59 teaching assistants showed that more than half (31 assistants) did not have indirect pedagogical activities included in their workload, although they perform these, usually on a voluntary basis, and in their spare time. Th is fi nding is signifi cant in view of the potential negative impact on the system of support for students with special educational needs. Th e recommendations include immediate remedy through the inclusion of indirect pedagogical activities in the workload of all teaching assistants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
