For the first time, cross sections of the 151Eu(α,xn)155−xTb (x = 2–6) reactions were measured by stack foil technique in the alpha particle range 60 → 19 MeV. Experimental excitation functions were compared with theoretical data from TENDL 2019 library and calculated by EMPIRE-3.2.3 code. Thick target yields for terbium radioisotopes were calculated. The possibility of the practical application of the studied reactions for the production of 152Tb and 149Tb was assessed. It was shown that higher energy of alpha particles is required to produce 149Tb. The production of 152Tb is affected by the influence of side reactions. It is possible to decrease the total content of impurities (153Tb+151Tb) at EOB to 18% of the activity of the 152Tb under 8-hour irradiation by limiting the energy range of incident particles to 42 → 34 MeV. The 152Tb yield will be 222 MBq/μA.

Method for production of alpha emitter 149Tb by irradiation of 151Eu with 70 MeV 3He nuclei is proposed. For the first time, the cross sections for the formation of isotopes 149,150,151,152Tb were measured experimentally using a stack foil technique in the 3He particles energy range 70 → 12 MeV. The thick target yield of 149Tb is 39 MBq/μAh, or 230 MBq/μA 149Tb at saturation. The optimal energy range from the point of view of radioisotopic purity is 70 → 40 MeV. At these conditions about 150 MBq/μA 149Tb can be produced in 8 hours irradiation, which is sufficient for therapeutic applications. The main impurities are 150Tb (~100% in activity) and 151Tb (~30% in activity). The proposed method surpasses its counterparts by the high content of the target isotope in the natural mixture and the simplicity of the radiochemical separation of 149Tb from the bulk target material.

The irradiations of Ag to Sn targets by bremsstrahlung generated with 23-MeV electron beams are performed at the MT-25 microtron. Gamma spectra of the induced activities have been measured and the yields of all detected radionuclides and isomers are carefully measured and analyzed. A regular dependence of yields versus changed reaction threshold is confirmed. Many isomers are detected and the suppression of the production probability is observed with growing product spin. Special peculiarities for the isomer-to-ground state ratios were deduced for the 106mAg, 108mAg, 113mIn, 115mIn, and 123mSn isomers. The production of such nuclides as 108mAg, 115mIn, 117gIn, and 113mCd is of interest for applications, especially when economic methods are available.

Gas-phase chromatography studies of nihonium (Nh, $Z=113$ ) were carried out at the one-atom-at-a-time level. For the production of nihonium, the heavy-ion-induced nuclear fusion reaction of 48Ca with 243Am was used. This leads to isotopes 284,285Nh, as the direct descendants of the $\alpha$ -decaying precursors 288,289Mc. Combining the Dubna Gas-Filled Recoil Separator with gas-phase chromatographic separation, the experiment was sensitive to elemental nihonium and its adsorption behavior on Teflon, theoretically predicted by modern relativistic density functional theory. The non-observation of any decays of Nh after the chemical separation indicates a larger than expected retention of elemental Nh on a Teflon surface.

The adsorption behavior of 197Hg and 183–185Hg on red amorphous selenium (red a-Se) and trigonal selenium (t-Se) was investigated experimentally by off-line and on-line gas chromatographic methods, in preparation of a sensitive chemical separation and characterization of the transactinides copernicium (Cn, Z = 112) and flerovium (Fl, Z = 114). Monte-Carlo simulations of a diffusion controlled deposition were in good agreement with the experimental results, assuming as interaction limits −ΔH ads red a-Se (Hg) > 85 kJ/mol, and −ΔH ads t-Se (Hg)

Among nuclides, 195mPt isomer is characterized by a number of properties that make it suitable for use in nuclear medicine. Effective ways of optimizing the Pt isomer yield at low impurity contents must be sought. The method based on double neutron capture by the 193Ir target nucleus with subsequent populating of 195mPt through β decay allows chemical isolation of the isomer. In this work, the problem is analyzed, test experiments on Ir activation with neutrons are conducted, and theoretical estimates of the 195mPt yield are presented. Full-scale model experiments on the IBR-2 reactor in Dubna should confirm the effectiveness of the method.

Fast progressing immuno-PET asks to explore new radionuclides. One of the promising candidates is 90Nb. It has a half-life of 14.6 h that allows visualizing and quantifying biological processes with medium and slow kinetics, such as tumor accumulation of antibodies and antibodies fragments or drug delivery systems and nanoparticles. 90Nb exhibits a positron branching of 53% and an average kinetic energy of emitted positrons of E mean =0.35 MeV. Currently, radionuclide production routes and Nb V labeling techniques are explored to turn this radionuclide into a useful imaging probe. However, efficient separation of 90Nb from irradiated targets remains in challenge. Ion exchange based separation of 90Nb from zirconium targets was investigated in systems AG 1 × 8 – HCl/H2O2 and UTEVA-HCl. 95Nb (t 1/2 = 35.0 d), 95Zr (t 1/2 = 64.0 d) and 92m Nb (t 1/2 = 10.15 d) were chosen for studies on distribution coefficients. Separation after AG 1 × 8 anion exchange yields 99% of 90/95Nb. Subsequent use of a solid-phase extraction step on UTEVA resin further decontaminates 90/95Nb from traces of zirconium with yields 95% of 90/95Nb. A semi-automated separation takes one hour to obtain an overall recovery of 90/95Nb of 90%. The amount of Zr was reduced by factor of 108. The selected separation provides rapid preparation (90Nb appropriate for the synthesis of 90Nb-radiopharmaceuticals, relevant for purposes of immuno-PET. Applying the radioniobium obtained, 90/95Nb-labeling of a monoclonal antibody (rituximab) modified with desferrioxamine achieved labeling yields of >90% after 1 h incubation at room temperature.

First experimental results of a chemical investigation of element 113 independently confirm the synthesis of the new elements 115 and 113 in the nuclear fusion reaction of Ca 48 + Am 243 and indicate a chemical behaviour resembling a species with a high volatility a weak interaction with inert surfaces and an enhanced reactivity towards gold surfaces.

Previously reported preparation method for Pd-based intermetallic targets (Usoltsev, et al., 2012) [1] has been successfully applied for producing two stationary 243Am/Pd targets. Both targets have been irradiated at the U-400 cyclotron at Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions Dubna (Russian Federation) using high intensity beams (up to 0.83 μApart) of 48Ca18+. Alpha-particle spectroscopy and light microscopy allowed for a comprehensive characterization of the intermetallic targets before and after irradiation. A natNd/Pd intermetallic target and a solely electroplated 243Am/Ti target were similarly investigated for comparison.

A well-known island of nuclear isomerism appears near A =175–180 due to the deformation alignment of single-particle orbits at high angular momentum. This sometimes results in the formation of multi-quasiparticle states with record spin that are long-lived because of “K-hindrance”, i.e. symmetry re-arrangement. Production methods and spectroscopic studies of these isomers remain a challenge for modern nuclear reaction and nuclear structure physics. In the present work, activities were produced by irradiation of 176 Yb (97.6% enriched) and nat Lu targets with 35 MeV 4 He ions from the internal beam of the U-200 cyclotron. Induced activities were analyzed by applying the methods of radiochemistry and gamma spectroscopy. Yields of the compound and nucleon-transfer reactions were measured and the isomer-to-ground state ratios were deduced. Calculated results were obtained using standard procedures to reproduce the (α, xn) cross-sections, and the systematic behavior of the nucleon-transfer yields was established. The isomer-to-ground-state ratios for direct reactions with 4 He ions were examined, resulting in a new characterization of the reaction mechanism.

The discovery of relatively longer halflives of transactinides ( T1/2 ~ 1.3 h) and (T 1/2 ~ 29 h) offers new approaches for the study of chemical properties of Rf and Db in solutions. This work examines the effects that the pH of a solution, HF concentration, the concentration of proper ions in the solution, the presence of foreign multivalent ions in the solution, and the contact time of liquid and solid phases have on the coprecipitation of radioisotopes of group�4 elements Ti, Zr, and Hf with fluoride La. The morphology of the solid phase was studied using electron microscopy methods (SEM and TEM); an Xray phase analysis of the obtained solid phases was performed. It was inferred that the fluoride forms of Zr and Hf cocrystallize with LaF3. The possibilities of using coprecipitation for examining the influence that the rela� tivistic effects have on the chemical properties of Rf and Db were discussed.

Currently, gas phase chemistry experiments with heaviest elements are usually performed with the gas-jet technique with the disadvantage that all reaction products are collected in a gas-filled thermalisation chamber adjacent to the target. The incorporation of a physical preseparation device between target and collection chamber opens up the perspective to perform new chemical studies. But this approach requires detailed knowledge of the stopping force (STF) of the heaviest elements in various materials. Measurements of the energy loss of mercury (Hg), radon (Rn), and nobelium (No) in Mylar and argon (Ar) were performed at low kinetic energies of around (40–270) keV per nucleon. The experimentally obtained values were compared with STF calculations of the commonly used program for calculating stopping and ranges of ions in matter (SRIM). Using the obtained data points an extrapolation of the STF up to element 114, eka-lead, in the same stopping media was carried out. These estimations were applied to design and to perform a first chemical experiment with a superheavy element behind a physical preseparator using the nuclear fusion reaction 244Pu(48Ca; 3n)289114. One decay chain assigned to an atom of 285112, the α-decay product of 289114, was observed.

A procedure was developed for selective separation of Group IV elements from Sr and Lu, followed by rapid separation of Zr and Hf by cation-exchange chromatography in dilute HCl/HF solutions. The possibility of using this procedure for chemical identification and determination of decay parameters of the new isotope 267Rf was demonstrated.

A chemical separation method based on reversed-phase chromatography has been developed to separate the group five elements from the reaction products produced in the bombardment of 243Am with 48Ca ions. Decontamination factors on the order of 106 were achieved for group-three elements such as americium, and 107 or more for selected reaction products as measured by gamma-ray spectrometry pre-and post-chemistry. Details of the chemical separation scheme are discussed and compared to previously reported results.

The recognition criterion for discovery of a new chemical element includes two aspects, the characterization properties and the assignment properties. In this paper, we will discuss the status of element 115 experiments that have been performed in Dubna, Russia, highlighting the characterization and assignment properties as they specifically relate to a recent experiment. After discussing the status of what is known about the decay properties of element 115 [Yu.Ts. Oganessian et al. Phys. Rev. C 72 (2005) Art. No 034611], observed previously using the Dubna Gas-Filled Recoil Separator, we will discuss the prior chemical studies that have been performed on the Db descendant of element 115 [S.N. Dmitriev et al. Mendeleev Commun.(1) (2005) 1–4]. Following the success of that experiment, some additional chemical information was desired. Two separation chemistries were then developed at LLNL and JINR. LLNL utilized reversed phase chromatography and JINR utilized anion exchange chromotography to perform not only +4/+5 separations, but also intra-group separations, where Nb-like and Ta-like fractions were eluted. The results from an experiment using these chemistries for the first time during December 2005 in Dubna, Russia, will be compared with prior chemical results. We will conclude with a discussion of possible enhancements to the work already performed and the current status of the future experimental plans.

Two gas phase adsorption chemistry experiments aimed at the chemical characterization of element 112 using its isotope 283 112 have been performed at the Flerov Laboratory for Nuclear Reactions (FLNR) Dubna, Russia. The applied Insitu-Volatilization and On-line Detection (IVO) technique is a thermochromatographic system combining the determination of the deposition temperature of volatile elements on a surface along a temperature gradient with an efficient detection of the deposited species by event-by-event alpha and SF-fragment spectroscopy. Two possibilities to produce the isotope 283 112 were used: 1.) the direct production reaction 238 U( 48 Ca,3n) 283 112; 2.) the reaction 242 Pu( 48 Ca,3n), where the primary product 287 114, decays via alpha emission to 283 112 with a half-life of 0.5 s. The chemistry experiments were aimed at a chemical identification of 283 112 and an independent confirmation of its decay properties. In the direct reaction no decays related to 283 112 were observed. However, two decay chains unambiguously attributed to the decay of 283 112 were observed using the second production path. Previously reported observation of 283 112 and 279 Ds and their decay properties were confirmed. From its thermochromatorgaphic deposition first thermochemical data were deduced for element 112, unveiling it as a typical group 12 element.

Element 112 was discovered at the Heavy Ion Research Laboratory in Darmstadt, Germany in 1996. A decade on, and some of its chemical properties have now been determined. Irradiation of plutonium-242 with intense calcium-48 beams for three weeks produced two atoms of element 112 (not yet officially named, but commonly called ununbium), and that's enough to do some chemistry on if you are quick. Chemically ununbium behaves as a typical element of the group 12 in the periodic table (which it shares with Zn, Cd and Hg). It is very volatile and forms a metallic bond with a gold surface. An experiment has scrutinized two atoms of element 112, finding that it is very volatile and forms a metallic bond with a gold surface. These characteristics establish element 112 as a typical element of group 12. The heaviest elements to have been chemically characterized are seaborgium1 (element 106), bohrium2 (element 107) and hassium3 (element 108). All three behave according to their respective positions in groups 6, 7 and 8 of the periodic table, which arranges elements according to their outermost electrons and hence their chemical properties. However, the chemical characterization results are not trivial: relativistic effects on the electronic structure of the heaviest elements can strongly influence chemical properties4,5,6. The next heavy element targeted for chemical characterization is element 112; its closed-shell electronic structure with a filled outer s orbital suggests that it may be particularly susceptible to strong deviations from the chemical property trends expected within group 12. Indeed, first experiments concluded that element 112 does not behave like its lighter homologue mercury7,8,9. However, the production and identification methods10,11 used cast doubt on the validity of this result. Here we report a more reliable chemical characterization of element 112, involving the production of two atoms of 283112 through the alpha decay of the short-lived 287114 (which itself forms in the nuclear fusion reaction12 of 48Ca with 242Pu) and the adsorption of the two atoms on a gold surface. By directly comparing the adsorption characteristics of 283112 to that of mercury and the noble gas radon, we find that element 112 is very volatile and, unlike radon, reveals a metallic interaction with the gold surface. These adsorption characteristics establish element 112 as a typical element of group 12, and its successful production unambiguously establishes the approach to the island of stability of superheavy elements through 48Ca-induced nuclear fusion reactions with actinides.

The expression of an α-subunit of interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2Rα) was assessed by quantifying activation-induced upregulation of CD25 in IL-2-independent Jurkat leukemic cell line. It has been found that in growing Jurkat culture within 24 h, phytohemagglutinin (PHA, 5 μg/ml) or PHA in combination with 12,13-phorbol dibutirate (PDBu, 10(-8)M) increase the number of CD25+ cells to 32.3 ± 3.4% (n = 11) and 44.8 ± 8.6% (n = 6) respectively. Interleukin-2 (IL-2, 200 U/ml) alone or in combination with PDBu did not induce CD25 expression in Jurkat cells. All the tested stimulatory agencies affected neither the proliferation status no the growth of Jurkat cell cultures. In contrast to human blood T cells, WHI-P131, a selective pharmacological inhibitor of JAK/STAT signaling and CD25 expression, did not decrease the number of induced CD25+ cells in Jurkat culture. Flow cytometry analysis revealed a dose-dependent decrease in the proportion of cells in G1 phase and an increase in the proportion of cells in G2/M phase in WHI-P131-treated Jurkat cultures. It has been also found that WHI-P131 induces G2/M arrest in the absence of PHA or PDBu. We have concluded that (1) the IL-2-independent T cells of Jurkat line had not loss the mechanism for IL-2Rα expression in response to T cell receptor activation, (2) in the transformed T cells, WHI-P131 can arrest cell cycle at G2/M phase and has effects on targets other than IL-2 receptor-associated tyrosine kinase JAK3.

Summary A chemical separation procedure for Rf/Db is described which was applied to a long-lived decay product from the nuclear fusion reaction 48Ca+ 243Am. A 1.2 mg thick 243Am target was bombarded by 247 MeV 48Ca particles. The recoiling products were collected in a thick Cu catcher for about one day and then subjected to a chemical separation procedure that included an ion exchange from dilute HF solutions. Final samples were prepared on 30 μg/cm2 thick polyethylene (PE) foils and counted in 4π-geometry for α-particles and spontaneous fission (SF) coincidences. The detector arrays were surrounded by 3He detectors to also assay prompt neutrons. Decontamination factors from actinides of about 105 were achieved. Group 6 (W) to 14 (Pb) elements as models for their heavier homologues were shown to be separated from the Rf/Db fraction with more than 90%. In eight final samples, representing a total beam dose of 3.4 × 1018 particles, 15 SF events were detected. The decay pattern points to a single component with a half-life of ≈32h, which shows a chemical behavior similar to the lighter homologues of group 4 and 5 elements.

The recent discovery of the elements 115 and 113 in the reaction 48Ca + 243Am was confirmed by an independent radiochemical experiment based on the identification of the long-lived decay product dubnium.

A rapid method for the preparation of 87Y/87mSr radionuclide generator from a rubidium chloride target irradiated with 35 MeV α-particles is described. A simple two-step procedure is used to obtain a carrier-free 87mSr isotope with a high enough radiochemical yield and high purity in the final aqueous fraction.

There are much data on neutron cross sections over the chart of nuclides for stable isotopes and not as much for the radioactive ones. Double neutron capture experiments could be fruitful to provide more data. Time-integrated mean flux of slow neutrons reaches the value of 2.3-1012 n/cm2 s at the irradiation port near the active zone of the IBR-2 pulsed reactor of JINR. This is enough to detect the double neutron capture products by the activation method. A high capture cross section is obtained in the present experiment for intermediate radioactive 182Ta and 194Ir target nuclides. Together with the known data for 198Au, these values may prove an essential role of double neutron capture process for nucleosynthesis of 183W, 195Pt and 199Hg isotopes at stellar conditions.

We studied in detail the sorption behavior of Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb and Ta on AG 1 anion exchange resin in HF-acetone mixed solutions as a function of organic cosolvent and acid concentrations. Anion exchange behavior was found to be strongly acetone concentration dependent. The distribution coefficients of Ti, Zr, Hf and Nb increased and those of Ta decreased with increasing content of acetone in HF solutions. With increasing HF concentration anion exchange equilibrium analysis indicated the formation of fluoride complexes of group 4 elements with charge-3 and Ta---2. For Nb the slope of-2 increased up to-5. Optimal conditions for separation of the elements using AIX chromatography were found. Group 4 elements formed MF{sub 7}{sup 3-} (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) complexes whose sorption decreased Ti>Hf>Zr in reverse order of complex stability. This fact is of particular interest for studying ion exchange behavior of Rf compared to Ti. The advantages of studying chemical properties of Rf and Db in aqueous HF solutions mixed with organic solvents are briefly discussed.

A cation-exchange procedure was developed for separating Nb from Ta, Pa from Ta, and Nb, Pa, and Ta from Zr, Hf, and lanthanides in dilute HC1/HF solutions. The stability of the fluoride complexes of Group IV and V elements decreases in the following order: Nb ∼ Pa > Zr > Hf > Ta. This procedure can be used in experiments on synthesis of superheavy nuclei for isolation of Db from the reaction products and for its chemical identification.

The production of 283112 in 48Ca induced nuclear reactions was investigated using physical and chemical separation techniques. In the reaction 48Ca on 238U, four events were registered at the SHIP velocity filter. The mean atomic mass of the evaporation residues (EVR)

Chemical behaviour of group 5 elements in the aqueous hydrofluoric acid solutions was studied. The radiochemical method for the cation exchange separation of Nb (Pa) and Ta from Zr, Hf and lanthanides is presented. The developed scheme allows excluding of the presence of SF heavy actinides in fractions of separated elements. On the basis of the data of the present work, it is possible to suggest the following order of the stability of the fluoride complexes of group 4 and 5 elements: Nb ≈ Pa > Zr > Hf > Ta. The order of the complex formation is in agreement with theoretical predictions. This analytical procedure can be used in future heavy nuclei synthesis experiments for the separation of dubnium (Db) from other reactions products and for its chemical identification.

The results of two experiments designed to synthesize element 115 isotopes in the {sup 243}Am+{sup 48}Ca reaction are presented. Two new elements with atomic numbers 113 and 115 were observed for the first time. With 248-MeV {sup 48}Ca projectiles, we observed three similar decay chains consisting of five consecutive {alpha} decays, all detected in a total time interval of 30 s. Each chain was terminated by a spontaneous fission (SF) with a high-energy release and a lifetime of about a day. With 253-MeV {sup 48}Ca projectiles, we registered a different decay chain of consecutive {alpha} decays detected in a time interval of 0.5 s, also terminated by spontaneous fission, but after 1.8 h. The decay properties of the eleven new {alpha}- and SF-decaying nuclei are consistent with expectations for consecutive {alpha} decays originating from the parent isotopes {sup 288}115 and {sup 287}115, produced in the 3n- and 4n-evaporation channels, respectively. Support for the assignment of the atomic numbers of all of the nuclei in the {sup 288}115 decay chain was obtained in an independent experiment in which a long-lived spontaneous fission activity, {sup 268}Db (15 events), was found to be chemically consistent with the fifth group of the periodic table.more » The odd-odd isotope {sup 288}115 was observed with largest cross section of about 4 pb. In the SF decay of {sup 268}Db, a total kinetic energy of 230 MeV and a neutron multiplicity per fission of 4.2 were measured. The decay properties of the 11 new isotopes with Z=105-115 and the production cross sections are in agreement with modern concepts of the role of nuclear shells in the stability of superheavy nuclei. The features of 137Cs metabolism in the rabbit's organism when feeding on silicates were investigated. By results of two experiments on rabbits radiosorption by of zeolite, saponit, humolit, vermiculite and palygorskit in the gastrointestinal tract was evaluated. It was found that vermiculite and palygorskit had the strongest influence on processes of accumulation and decorporation 137Cs, when a dose of additives was 5% of the weight of forage.
