1. Examining the Effectiveness of the Transdiagnostic Unified Protocol for Emotional Disorders Delivered to Youth Following Hurricane Harvey

Abstract

Background: Hurricane Harvey struck southeast Texas in August 2017 resulting in widespread destruction and significant emotional distress. Objective: We examined the effectiveness of a transdiagnostic psychotherapeutic intervention delivered to youth with emotional disorders in a large, community health system following this hurricane. Methods: One hundred forty-nine youth aged 5 to 17 years with a history of hurricane exposure and emotional difficulties received an average of 6.4 (SD = 3.4) psychotherapy sessions using the Unified Protocols for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children and Adolescents. Youth-caregiver dyads completed measures of disaster exposure and impact at baseline as well as anxiety and depression at baseline and each therapy session. Symptom severity and level of functioning were rated by the clinician. Latent growth curve modeling was used to examine symptom change over time. Results: Children and adolescents began treatment with moderate levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms, symptom severity, and difficulties in daily functioning. Anxiety and depressive symptoms and symptom severity declined significantly over the treatment period. Clinician ratings of functionality evidenced significant improvement over time. Older age was correlated with more depressive symptoms at baseline and superior functioning at baseline with fewer completed treatment sessions. Conclusion: In this naturalistic, community-based effectiveness study we found significant improvement on measures of anxiety, depression, symptom severity, and daily functioning. Findings suggest that a transdiagnostic intervention may be effective for addressing a range of emotional concerns in the aftermath of a natural disaster. These results can be used to inform and refine evidence-based interventions that improve the mental health and wellbeing of disaster-exposed youth.

Abstract

Hurricane Harvey was one of the most destructive hurricanes in U.S. history, resulting in widespread flooding and property damage in the greater Houston-metropolitan area. This study aims to characterize a group of treatment-seeking youth and adults up to 2.5 years following Hurricane Harvey. A total of 154 children, 165 adolescents, and 531 adults who presented to publicly-funded mental health services were assessed on demographics, depressive and anxiety symptomatology, and hurricane impact. Age, sex, race/ethnicity, family/social support, time since the hurricane, and hurricane impact were examined as correlates of depressive and anxiety symptoms at treatment initiation. Overall, participants presented with elevated depressive and anxiety symptoms to the clinic. Greater hurricane impact was correlated with depressive and anxiety symptoms in adults and adolescents, but not in children. In addition, poorer family/social support was linked to greater anxiety in children and higher depression scores in children and adolescents. Adolescent females had higher anxiety and depression than adolescent males. Days since Harvey and anxiety symptoms were negatively associated for adults. Clinical and research implications for psychological distress in the medium-to-long-term post-natural disaster period are discussed.

Abstract

We describe the perceptions of mental health clinicians practicing in the United States about the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the presentation and treatment course of active clients with anxiety. Clinician participants reported on client symptomology at the beginning of treatment, just before (prior to March 2020), and at a mid-pandemic timepoint (December 2020/January 2021). An initial sample of 70 clinicians responded to a survey assessing their clients’ overall anxiety severity, anxiety sensitivity, pathological uncertainty, family accommodation, and avoidance levels. Of these, 54 clinician responses were included in study analyses, providing detailed clinical information on 81 clients. Findings suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with increases in anxiety severity in the majority of clients; overall, clinicians reported that 53% of clients had symptoms worsen due to COVID-19 and that only 16% experienced improvement of symptoms during treatment. Those who had lower levels of avoidance pre-pandemic and those who increased their frequency of treatment were more likely to experience increases in anxiety severity by the mid-pandemic timepoint. Further research is needed to understand the extended effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on anxiety symptomology and treatment.

This paper discusses the concept of poverty and relates it to Nigerian situation and looks at various poverty reduction strategies by successive governments in Nigeria and agrees that such strategies did not yield the desired results as more than half of the country’s population still wallows in poverty. The paper looks at the experience of the Libyan government under the administration of Muammar Gaddafi in fighting poverty as an example that can be replicated in fighting poverty in Nigeria. The paper concludes by recommending ways in which the Nigerian Government can adopt in tackling poverty in the country.

10. Online Teaching and Learning at the Graduate School Level: Student Perceptions on Discussion Boards v. Synchronous Communication

Abstract

This paper examines a group of graduate students and their previous experiences with online education, various teaching and learning online tools, and their perceptions on the effectiveness of these tools as it relates to their learning, interpersonal skills and communication. This paper presents the graduate student's self-reported educational experience at a regional state university in the southeast United States in a 100% online Master's Degree program. The data was collected through the use of a 28 open-ended question survey, which was completed by a group of 127 graduate students and the findings produced six main findings, which were: 1) The respondents indicated at a high percentage (85%) a high level (level 4, 5 and 6) of technology use and understanding. 2) The majority of the respondents (97%) indicated they preferred live synchronous sessions rather than discussion boards for learning content and communication. 3) The majority of the respondents (72%) indicated that when choosing future courses, the inclusion of discussion boards in a course was not important (34%) or somewhat unimportant (38%). 4) 100% of the respondents indicated that Live Elluminate Sessions were Highly Effective (65%) or Somewhat Effective (35%), as it pertained to understanding the content. 5) Respondents indicated that 59% (12% Highly Effective, 47% Somewhat Effective) of the respondents indicated discussion boards as an impactful way of learning content at the graduate level. It also shows that 41% (22% Somewhat Ineffective, 19% Not Effective). This study helps universities identify the importance of synchronous learning in a digital format when delivering online teaching and learning. There is a clear change in the needs of students enrolled in 100% online courses, which will force university faculty to increase the synchronous interaction between them and their students and between the students and their peers. Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic is taking a significant global toll on emotional well-being, but evidence of mental health impacts in the United States remains limited. In April 2020, we conducted an exploratory survey of U.S. residents to understand prevalence of and factors associated with psychological distress during the pandemic. Data collection was conducted using Qualtrics, an online survey platform, and U.S. adult respondents were recruited via Amazon's Mechanical Turk platform. Among 1,366 respondents, 42% (n = 571) reported clinically significant anxiety and 38% (n = 519) reported clinically significant depression. Factors associated with anxiety and depressive symptoms included Hispanic/Latino ethnicity; younger age; lower income; employment as or living with a health care worker-first responder; caregiver status; SARS-CoV-2 infection status; decreased frequency of engagement in healthy behaviors; and changed frequency of engagement in unhealthy behaviors. That some of these factors are associated with elevated distress during the pandemic is not yet widely appreciated and might be useful in informing management of mental health care resources.

17. Of Birds and Bees: Montaigne, Shakespeare and the Rhetoric of Imitation

Abstract

This essay reexamines early modern discourse on imitatio, then analyzes some of Montaigne and Shakespeare’s key engagements therewith. It reevaluates classical and early modern discussions of imitation not for their (un)reliability as descriptions of the past’s shifting intertextual practices, but as constitutive rhetorical acts. In particular, the essay shows how the common tropes of imitation—apian, digestive, avian, and cosmetic metaphors, to list a few—serve as important rhetorical staples through which imitative texts construct their purported similarities to and differences from classical precursors to maximize their own prestige and promote their own visions of learning. Turning to Montaigne, the chapter reveals how the Essayes—particularly “Of Pedantisme” and “Of the Institution and Education of Children”—redefine imitatio both to critique institutionalized pragmatic humanism as a grasping failure, and to champion their own, elitist brand of civic humanism. Though Shakespeare is never so direct, Love’s Labour’s Lost embodies in the pedant Holofernes an imitative practice that would avoid slavish repetition and claim prestige through linguistic copiousness; however, the play rejects his version of imitation by humiliating him, negotiating instead an ideal of learnedness anathema to the pedantry inevitably entangled with attempts to demand preferment by constructing the meaning and merit of imitatio.

We demonstrate that the UV brightest quasars at z=1-2 live in overdense environments. This is based on an analysis of deep Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 G141 grism spectroscopy of the galaxies along the lines-of-sight to UV luminous quasars in the redshift range z=1-2. This constitutes some of the deepest grism spectroscopy performed by WFC3, with 4 roll angles spread over a year of observations to mitigate the effect of overlapping spectra. Of the 12 quasar fields studied, 8 display evidence for a galaxy overdensity at the redshift of the quasar. One of the overdensities, PG0117+213 at z=1.50, has potentially 36 spectroscopically confirmed members, consisting of 19 with secure redshifts and 17 with single-line redshifts, within a cylinder of radius ~700 kpc. Its halo mass is estimated to be log (M/Msol)=14.7. This demonstrates that spectroscopic and narrow-band observations around distant UV bright quasars may be an excellent route for discovering protoclusters. Our findings agree with previous hints from statistical observations of the quasar population and theoretical works, as feedback regulated black hole growth predicts a correlation between quasar luminosity and halo mass. Abstract

Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 79 pb-1, D0 has searched for events containing multiple jets and large missing transverse energy in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Observing no significant excess beyond what is expected from the standard model, we set limits on the masses of squarks and gluinos and on the model parameters m_0 and m_1/2, in the framework of the minimal low-energy supergravity models of supersymmetry. For tan(beta) = 2 and A_0 = 0, with mu < 0, we exclude all models with m_squark < 250 GeV/c^2. For models with equal squark and gluino masses, we exclude m < 260 GeV/c^2., 10 pages, 3 figures, Submitted to PRL, Fixed typo on page bottom of p. 6 (QCD multijet background is 35.4 events)

Abstract

We report a measurement of the differential cross section for W boson production as a function of its transverse momentum in proton-antiproton collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV. The data were collected by the DØ experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider during 1994-1995 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 85 pb-1. The results are in good agreement with quantum chromodynamics over the entire range of transverse momentum. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

We present results on dijet production via hard color-singlet exchange in proton-antiproton collisions at √s = 630 GeV and 1800 GeV using the DØ detector. The fraction of dijet events produced via color-singlet exchange is measured as a function of jet transverse energy, separation in pseudorapidity between the two highest transverse energy jets, and proton-antiproton center-of-mass energy. The results are consistent with a color-singlet fraction that increases with an increasing fraction of quark-initiated processes and inconsistent with two-gluon models for the hard color-singlet. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

We present a measurement of the Drell-Yan cross section at high dielectron invariant mass using 120/pb of data collected in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV by the D0 collaboration during 1992-96. No deviation from standard model expectations is observed. We use the data to set limits on the energy scale of quark-electron compositeness with common constituents. The 95% confidence level lower limits on the compositeness scale vary between 3.3 TeV and 6.1 TeV depending on the assumed form of the effective contact interaction., 6 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PRL

Abstract

The DZERO detector is used to study proton-antiproton collisions at the 1800 GeV and 630 GeV center-of-mass energies available at the Fermilab Tevatron. To measure jets, the detector uses a sampling calorimeter composed of uranium and liquid argon as the passive and active media respectively. Understanding the jet energy calibration is not only crucial for precision tests of QCD, but also for the measurement of particle masses and the determination of physics backgrounds associated with new phenomena. This paper describes the energy calibration of jets observed with the DZERO detector at the two proton-antiproton center-of-mass energies in the transverse energy and pseudorapidity range ET>8 GeV and pseudorapidity, 94 pages with 52 figures (included in the 94 pages)

We report a search for effects of large extra spatial dimensions in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV with the DZero detector, using events containing a pair of electrons or photons. The data are in good agreement with the expected background and do not exhibit evidence for large extra dimensions. Abstract

Habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation are drivers of major declines in biodiversity and species extinctions. The actual causes of species population declines following habitat change are more difficult to discern and there is typically high covariation among the measures used to infer the causes of decline. The causes of decline may act directly on individual fitness and survival, or through disruption of population processes. We examined the relationships among configuration, extent and status of native vegetation and three commonly used indicators of individual body condition and chronic stress (haemoglobin level, haematocrit, residual body mass condition index) in 13 species of woodland-dependent birds in south-eastern Australia. We also examined two measures of changes to population processes (sex ratio and individual homozygosity) in ten species and alleic richness in five species. We found little support for relationships between site or landscape characteristics and individual or population response variables, notwithstanding that our simulations showed we had sufficient power to detect relatively small effects. We discuss possible causes of the absence of detectable habitat effects in this system and the implications for the usefulness of individual body condition and easily measured haematological indices as indicators of the response of avian populations to habitat change.

Abstract

A laboratory study was conducted to determine the effect of display font size on muscle activity, using surface electromyography (SEMG) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA). The study showed that volunteers performing the experiment on small font size increased left hand flexor and neck extensor muscles activity. There was also a significant difference in RULA grand scores based on posture angle measures between the three tasks that subjects performed. In addition, there was an effect of time on upper body posture and subjective measures. There was no impact of font size on the dominant hand deltoid and trapezius, or left and right hand extensor muscles. In general, the results suggest that software developers should be sensitive to font size while designing software. The results also suggest that computer users should have better knowledge regarding the benefits of increasing the font size on their displays.

Abstract

Software efficiency may be important for employees who want to be viewed as valuable assets in a company. One efficient method people can employ is the use of the keyboard to issue commands (KICs) because KICs are faster than other methods, e.g. menus or icons. Furthermore, using KICs may reduce the risk of repetitive strain injuries (RSIs). This paper examines the question of whether KIC users utilize different types of interaction techniques more quickly than non-KIC users. Participants were exposed to five conditions, each consisting of different computer tasks. One condition was used to determine KIC usage, the independent variable. The other four conditions were used to objectively measure performance in time (i.e., efficiency), one of the dependent variables. After each condition, participants completed the NASA-TLX survey, which was used as a subjective measure of workload, the second dependent variable. Task performance correlated strongly or moderately with KIC usage for all conditions, which indicates that KIC users finished all tasks more quickly than other users—even when they used other techniques than KICs to accomplish those tasks. There was no relationship between KIC usage and subjective workload.

Abstract

Five water samples from three sources, two municipal reservoirs in central North Carolina and Toolik Lake in Alaska, were processed to conduct a comparative survey of microbial small subunit rDNA sequences. Genomic DNA was extracted and amplified by PCR using universal SSU rDNA primers to generate 16S and 18S rDNA clone libraries and 50 clones from each library were sequenced and placed in operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Through this recovery and analysis of SSU rRNA genes, a metagenomic profile of the microbial community emerged for each environmental sample. Analyses of these profiles, including species diversity estimates and rank-abundance curves, revealed that approximately 64% of prokaryotic OTUs and 80% of eukaryotic OTUs were novel. Diversity estimates were consistent with predicted ecosystem characteristics: they were greater for the mesotrophic to eutrophic temperate lakes, than for the oligotrophic arctic lake. Sample comparisons showed that community similarity declined as geographic distance between sites increased. Real-time quantitative PCR results showed that OTUs which had been recovered from only one library were actually present in other samples, but at much lower frequencies, suggesting that many, if not most, microorganisms are cosmopolitan. Together, these results support the potential value of using the microbial community as an indicator of local environmental conditions. Abstract

Without denying Bucer's initial training in a scholastic context, it is arguable that the biblical humanist milieu was the more important for his development as a theologian as well as an exegete. Bucer was a full participant in that group of Rhenish reformers that has been termed ‘l'ecole rhenane d'exegese', as is evidenced by his prescriptions for the practice of theology found in the various ordinances for theological education in which he had a hand in drafting, as well as in his own practice of ‘doing’ theology. For Bucer, as for all biblical humanists (preeminently Erasmus), the true theologian is the biblical exegete.

Abstract

Martin Bucer's role in the Edwardian Reformation has been the subject of much study, most of which has been focused on his involvement in the Vestments Controversy, his role in the revision of the 1549 Prayer Book, and on his last major work, De regno Christi, which he wrote in 1550. What has received less attention is his sojourn in Cambridge, where he spent the majority of his time in England. Bucer's sometimes tense relations with members of Cranmer's circle, and even with Cranmer himself, provide a striking contrast to the ‘electric’ impact he had in Cambridge, which serves to underscore the importance of Cambridge to Bucer's English sojourn. The individuals whom he most influenced were members of the academic community at the University of Cambridge (where he served as Regius Professor of Divinity), especially the so-called ‘Athenian tribe’—although he did encounter the hostility of many members of his College, the largely conservative Trinity College. Abstract

We report on a measurement of the ratio of the differential cross sections for W and Z boson production as a function of transverse momentum in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. This measurement uses data recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in 1994-1995. It represents the first investigation of a proposal that ratios between W and Z observables can be calculated reliably using perturbative QCD, even when the individual observables are not. Using the ratio of differential cross sections reduces both experimental and theoretical uncertainties, and can therefore provide smaller overall uncertainties in the measured mass and width of the W boson than current methods used at hadron colliders., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Physics Letters B
