Abstract: International audience; Background: Aggressiveness is a stigma frequently associated with schizophrenia. The role of insight as a risk factor of aggressiveness remains contradictory; mainly because single measures of these states mask their complexity and heterogeneity.Methods: This study was conducted on 666 patients aged 15 and above with a DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder, drawn from the French national network of schizophrenia expert center database. Collected data comprised socio-demographics and standardized psychiatric assessments. Aggressiveness was evaluated using the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire and insight using the Scale to assess Unawareness of Mental Disorder (SUMD) and Birchwood Insight Scale (BIS).Results: Hostility was the aggressiveness dimension the most strongly associated with SUMD insight dimensions. Patients aware of their illness were nearly twice as likely to show hostility than those seriously unaware (OR = 1.95, 95% CI.: 1.08-3.5), but not when further adjusting for depression. Similarly, those aware of the consequences of their illness and of their symptoms were more hostile. Patients moderately aware of illness consequences had a higher risk of both anger and physical aggressiveness than those unaware (OR = 2.63, 95% CI.: 1.42-4.86, OR = 2.47, 95% CI.: 1.33-4.60, respectively), even when adjusting for depression for anger.Conclusion: Our study confirms that a multi-dimensional approach to insight and aggressiveness is essential to understand the types of links between these clinical states. Insight may trigger the expression of an underlying hostile tendency, maybe via depression and self-stigmatisation. This should be taken into account in therapeutic approaches to improve insight.

Abstract: Although lithium is widely used in current practice to treat bipolar disorder (BD) and treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (MDD) among older adults, little is known about its efficacy and tolerability in this population, which is generally excluded from randomized clinical trials. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of long-term use of lithium among older adults with BD and MDD.Data from the Cohort of individuals with Schizophrenia and mood disorders Aged 55 years or more (CSA) were used. Two groups of patients with BD and MDD were compared: those who were currently receiving lithium versus those who were not. The effects of lithium on psychiatric (i.e., depressive symptoms severity, perceived clinical severity, rates of psychiatric admissions in the past-year), geriatric (overall and cognitive functioning) and physical outcomes (i.e., rates of non-psychiatric medical comorbidities and general hospital admissions in the past-year) were evaluated. All analyses were adjusted for age, sex, duration of disorder, diagnosis, smoking status, alcohol use, and use of antipsychotics, antiepileptics or antidepressants.Among the 281 older participants with BD or MDD, 15.7% were taking lithium for a mean duration of 12.5(SD = 11.6) years. Lithium use was associated with lower intensity of depressive symptoms, reduced perceived clinical global severity and lower benzodiazepine use (all p 0.05), without being linked to greater rates of medical comorbidities, except for hypothyroidism.Data were cross-sectional and data on lifetime history of psychotropic medications was not assessed.Our results suggest that long-term lithium use may be efficient and relatively well-tolerated in older adults with BD or treatment-resistant MDD.

Abstract: Little is known about the respective effects of depression and cognitive impairment on quality of life among older adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorder.We used data from the Cohort of individuals with Schizophrenia Aged 55-years or more (CSA) study, a large multicenter sample of older adults with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (N = 353). Quality of life (QoL), depression and cognitive impairment were assessed using the Quality of Life Scale (QLS), the Center of Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale and the Mini-Mental State Examination, respectively. We used structural equation modeling to examine the shared and specific effects of depression and cognitive impairment on QoL, while adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, general medical conditions, psychotropic medications and the duration of the disorder.Depression and cognitive impairment were positively associated (r = 0.24, p 0.01) and both independently and negatively impacted on QoL (standardized β = -0.41 and β = -0.32, both p 0.01) and on each QLS quality-of-life domains, except for depression on instrumental role and cognitive impairment on interpersonal relations in the sensitivity analyses excluding respondents with any missing data. Effects of depression and cognitive impairment on QoL were not due to specific depressive symptoms or specific cognitive domains, but rather mediated through two broad dimensions representing the shared effects across all depressive symptoms and all cognitive deficits, respectively.Because of the cross-sectional design of this study, measures of association do not imply causal associations.Mechanisms underlying these two broad dimensions should be considered as important potential targets to improve quality of life of this vulnerable population.

Abstract: International audience; Objectives The present article is a synthesis of the first 10 years of follow-up of the FondaMental Academic Center of Expertise for Schizophrenia (FACE-SZ) cohort. Methods More than 700 community-dwelling stabilized subjects have been recruited and evaluated to date. The mean age was 32 years with 75 % males, the mean illness duration was 11 years, the mean age at illness onset was 21 years, the mean duration of untreated psychosis was 1.5 years and 55 % were current daily tobacco smokers. Results The major findings of the FACE-SZ cohort may be summarized as follows: the metabolic syndrome is twice more frequent in schizophrenia as compared to the general population and is not correctly assessed and treated; cognitive disturbances have been found in benzodiazepine consumers and in patients with chronic low-grade peripheral inflammation; major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common current comorbid condition in about 20% of the subjects at the evaluation. MDD is associated with impaired quality of life and with increased nicotine dependency in SZ daily tobacco smokers. Improving depression and negative symptoms may be the most effective strategies to improve quality of life in schizophrenia; the duration of untreated psychosis is much longer in cannabis smokers and in subjects with an age at illness onset < 19 years. Adherence to treatment is diminished in subjects who report a subjective negative feeling after treatment intake independent of objective side effects (extrapyramidal syndrome and weight gain). Akathisia has been found in 18% of the subjects and has been associated with antipsychotic polytherapy. Conclusions In the light of these results, some recommendations for clinical care may be suggested. The early detection of schizophrenia should be specifically increased in adolescents and/or cannabis smokers. All patients should be administered a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation at the beginning of the illness and after stabilization under treatment. Improving metabolic parameters and lifestyle (diet and physical activity) should be reinforced. The benefit/risk ratio of benzodiazepine and antipsychotic polytherapy should be regularly reevaluated and withdrawn as soon as possible. If MDD remains underdiagnosed and undertreated, improving depression may strongly improve the quality of life of SZ subjects. In the end, Cognitive Remediation Therapy and anti-inflammatory strategies should be more frequently included in therapeutic strategies.; Objectifs Le présent article propose de faire un retour sur les 10 ans d’expérience du réseau national des 10 centres experts schizophrénie Français, à travers une revue des principales publications scientifiques qui en sont issues. Méthodes À ce jour, les données de plus de 700 patients ont pu être analysées. Globalement, cette population est composée de trois quarts d’hommes, est âgée en moyenne de 32 ans, la durée moyenne de maladie est d’environ 11 ans, l’âge moyen de début de maladie est de 21 ans, la durée de psychose non traitée est d’environ un an et demi. 55 % des sujets sont consommateurs de tabac au moment de l’évaluation. Enfin, un focus sera fait sur les projets de recherche multicentriques collaboratifs déployés au sein de ce réseau. Résultats Les principales données obtenues peuvent être résumées comme suit : le syndrome métabolique reste deux fois plus fréquent dans la schizophrénie qu’en population générale et n’est pas correctement pris en charge ; des troubles cognitifs spécifiques ont été identifiés chez les patients consommateurs de benzodiazépines et chez les patients présentant une inflammation périphérique. Des spécificités liées au sexe ont également été observées ; la dépression comorbide reste très fréquente, elle est associée à une diminution de la qualité de vie et à une augmentation de la dépendance nicotinique chez les fumeurs. Prendre en charge la dépression et les symptômes négatifs pourraient fortement améliorer la qualité de vie des patients ; le délai à l’instauration du traitement est plus long pour les schizophrénies se déclenchant avant 19 ans et chez les consommateurs de cannabis. L’adhésion au traitement est diminuée chez les patients rapportant un ressenti subjectif négatif du traitement, indépendamment de la prise de poids ou d’un syndrome extrapyramidal. Enfin, l’akathisie est très fréquente et fortement associée à la polythérapie antipsychotique. Conclusions Ces résultats conduisent à formuler plusieurs recommandations. Le dépistage du trouble et le traitement devraient être renforcés chez les adolescents et les consommateurs de cannabis. Tous les patients devraient bénéficier d’une évaluation neuropsychologique au début de leur trouble, après stabilisation sous traitement, puis de façon plus espacée au cours de leur suivi. La prise en charge des paramètres métaboliques, de l’alimentation et de l’activité physique devrait être renforcée. La balance bénéfice/risque de la prescription de benzodiazépines doit être réévaluée régulièrement au regard de son impact notamment sur la cognition. La monothérapie antipsychotique est recommandée autant que possible pour limiter les effets indésirables. La dépression reste sous-diagnostiquée et doit faire l’objet d’une évaluation systématique et d’un traitement spécifique. La remédiation cognitive doit également être plus largement proposée chez les patients présentant des troubles cognitifs.

Abstract: The need of a neutron source for the qualification of materials to be used in future fusion power reactors have been recognized in the European (EU) fusion programme for many years. The construction and exploitation of this facility is presently considered to be in the critical path of DEMO. This issue prompted the EU to launch activities for the design and engineering of the IFMIF-DONES (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility-DEMO Oriented Neutron Source) facility based on and taking profit of the results obtained in the IFMIF/EVEDA (Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities) project, presently conducted in the framework of the EU-Japan Bilateral Agreement on the Broader Approach to Fusion. These activities and R&D work for the IFMIF-DONES Plant are presently taking place in the framework of a work package of the EUROfusion Consortium, in direct collaboration with the Fusion for Energy Organization. The main objective of these activities is to consolidate the design and the underlying technology basis in order to be ready for IFMIF-DONES construction as early as possible. The paper presents the main engineering results for a generic site obtained during the first years of design work, as indicated in the recently released IFMIF-DONES Preliminary Engineering Design Report, making emphasis on the design evolution from previous phases and on the critical issues to be further developed in the near future. The proposed European site to host the facility (Granada, Spain) is briefly introduced as well.

Abstract: Supersonic and diffusive radiation flow is an important test problem for the radiative transfer models used in radiation-hydrodynamics computer codes owing to solutions being accessible via analytic and numeric methods. We present experimental results with which we compare these solutions by studying supersonic and diffusive flow in the laboratory. We present results of higher-accuracy experiments than previously possible studying radiation flow through up to 7 high-temperature mean free paths of low-density, chlorine-doped polystyrene foam and silicon dioxide aerogel contained by an Au tube. Measurements of the heat front position and absolute measurements of the x-ray emission arrival at the end of the tube are used to test numerical and analytical models. We find excellent absolute agreement with simulations provided that the opacity and the equation of state are adjusted within expected uncertainties; analytical models provide a good phenomenological match to measurements but are not in quantitative agreement due to their limited scope.

Abstract: International audience; The functional outcome in schizophrenia spectrum disorders is affected by multiple factors such as cognitive performance and clinical symptoms. Psychiatric disability may be another important determinant of functional outcome. The purpose of this study was to test whether schizophrenia symptoms and psychiatric disability mediated the association between cognition and functioning. Between April 2013 and July 2017, we included 108 community-dwelling adults with stable schizophrenia spectrum disorder in a multicenter study. Psychiatric disability was assessed with the Evaluation of Cognitive Processes involved in Disability in Schizophrenia (ECPDS) scale by relatives of patients. ECPDS focused on the broad array of motivational, neurocognitive, sociocognitive, and metacognitive impairments that result in activity restrictions. We used a battery of tests to assess seven cognition domains (processing speed, attention/vigilance, working, verbal and visual memory, reasoning and problem solving, and executive functioning) and cross-sectional structural equation modeling (SEM) for the mediation analyses. We estimated the one-year temporal stability of ECPDS scores in 45 participants. The model provided showed good fit and explained 43.9% of the variance in functioning. The effect of neurocognition on functioning was fully mediated by symptoms (proportion mediated: 36.5%) and psychiatric disability (proportion mediated: 31.3%). The ECPDS score had acceptable one-year temporal stability. The ECPDS scale has satisfactory psychometric properties, and shows significant convergence with neurocognition and functioning, suggesting a role for this tool in the routine evaluation of cognitive remediation needs. Our model validates psychiatric disability as a crucial step from cognitive impairment to restricted participation in life situations.

Abstract: Objective Latent Toxoplasma infection has been associated with widespread brain immune activation, increased blood brain barrier permeability, neural disruption, increased dopamine release in dopaminergic neurons, with NMDA activation and with schizophrenia (SZ) onset risk. Toxoplasma has been suggested to be a source of chronic low-grade inflammation and this inflammation has been associated with cognitive impairment in SZ. The objective of the present study were (i) to determine if latent Toxoplasma infection was associated with specific clinical features in stabilized SZ subjects, with cognitive impairment and with increased low-grade peripheral inflammation and (ii) to determine if Treatments with Anti-Toxoplasmic Activity (TATA) were associated with improved outcomes in subjects with latent Toxoplasma infection. Methods A comprehensive 2 daylong clinical and neuropsychological battery was administered in 250 SZ subjects included between 2015 and 2017 in the national FondaMental Expert Center (FACE-SZ) Cohort. Solid phase-enzyme microplate immunoassay methods were used to measure IgG class of antibodies to T. gondii in blood sample. Latent Toxoplasma infection was defined by T . gondii IgG ratio ≥0.8, equivalent to ≥10 international units. Chronic peripheral inflammation was defined by highly sensitive C reactive protein blood level ≥ 3 mg/L. Results Latent Toxoplasma infection has been found in 184 (73.6%) of this national multicentric sample. In the multivariate analyses, latent Toxoplasma infection has been significantly associated with higher PANSS negative (aOR = 1.1 [1.1–1.1], p = 0.04) and excitement subscores (aOR = 1.3 [1.1–1.6], p = 0.01), with two specific symptoms (i.e., reference delusion (aOR = 3.6 [1.2–10.6] p = 0.01) and alogia (aOR = 16.7 [2.0–134.7], p = 0.008)) and with chronic low-grade peripheral inflammation (27.2% vs. 7.6%, aOR = 3.8 [1.4–10.3], p = 0.004). Extrapyramidal symptoms remained significantly associated with latent Toxoplasma infection. On the opposite, no significant association of latent Toxoplasma infection with age, gender, age at SZ onset, suicide behavior or cognitive deficits has been found in these models (all p > 0.05). TATA were associated with lower depressive symptoms (aOR = 0.8[0.7–0.9], p = 0.01), and with lower rates of chronic peripheral inflammation (20.9% vs. 48.6%, aOR = 3.5 [1.5–7.9], p = 0.003) but not with higher cognitive scores (p > 0.05). Conclusion The present findings suggest that Toxoplasma is almost 3 times more frequent in SZ population compared to general population in France. The potential cerebral underpinnings of the association of latent Toxoplasma infection and the above-mentioned outcomes have been discussed. Future studies should confirm that TATA may be effective to reduce Toxoplasma-associated depressive symptoms and low-grade peripheral inflammation.

Abstract: Background Tobacco use is common in patients with schizophrenia (SZ) but little is known on the role of tobacco in the physiopathology or on the course of the disease. Only few studies embrace an extensive examination of clinical and therapeutic characteristics in stabilized patients. The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence of tobacco smoking in stabilized SZ outpatients and the clinical and treatment characteristics associated with daily tobacco use in a large community-dwelling sample of patients. Methods Three-hundred-and-sixty-one patients were included in the network of the FondaMental Expert Centers for Schizophrenia. Current tobacco status was self-declared. Results 53.7% were smokers. Mean age at tobacco onset was 17.2 years old. In multivariate analyses, after adjustment for confounding factors, positive symptoms and mean daily antipsychotic dose were associated with a higher frequency of tobacco use (OR = 1.06 95%IC[1.02–1.12], for positive symptoms, OR = 1.1, 95%IC[1.02–1.18] for daily antipsychotic dose). Education level, negative symptoms, anticholinergic agents, clozapine or aripiprazole administration were independently associated with a lower frequency of tobacco use (respectively OR = 0.87, 95%IC [0.79, 0.95], OR = 0.95, 95%IC[0.91–0.98], OR = 0.41, 95%IC[0.22–0.76], OR = 0.56, 95%IC = [0.32, 0.99] and OR = 0.49, 95%IC [0.26–0.91]). Conclusion The prevalence of current tobacco smoking in a French community-dwelling SZ patients is higher that observed in the general population. Patients with tobacco use present clinical and therapeutic specificities that may involve interaction between cholinergic-nicotinic and dopaminergic systems. The present study suggests that some therapeutics may improve daily smoking behavior in smokers. These results should be confirmed in longitudinal studies.

Abstract: This paper describes the density and diameter measurements of silica aerogel microspheres. The aerogel samples were fabricated in the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) Porous Structures Laboratory and by General Atomics. The diameters and densities of the aerogel samples were initially calculated from metrology carried out in the Porous Structures Laboratory. Radiography images of the samples were produced using the Manson soft-X-ray source at AWE from which the diameters and densities of the spheres could be inferred after image digitization.The two different measurement methods are compared, and the results are presented along with statistical analysis showing how well the results corroborate with each other; best practices are established for future measurements and analysis.

Une etude clinique francaise de phase IV – multicentrique, ouverte, comparative, randomisee – a ete donc destinee a evaluer l’impact d’un programme psychoeducatif (Soleduc ® ) sur le taux de rechutes (nouvelle hospitalisation) a deux ans chez les patients atteints de schizophrenie traites par l’amisulpride, compare a celui du groupe temoin prenant le meme traitement antipsychotique et beneficiant des informations habituelles concernant leur maladie pendant une duree equivalente au programme psychoeducatif. Deux cent vingt patients schizophrenes ont ete recrutes par 51 centres investigateurs. Une reduction significative des risques de rechute a ete observee dans le groupe Soleduc ® lorsque le nombre de seances de formation psychoeducatif etait superieur a cinq. Les mesures educationnelles sont peu couteuses et peuvent etre combinees avec d’autres types d’interventions therapeutiques. L’etude Soleduc ® confirme donc les recommandations de l’American Psychiatric Association, etablissant clairement que la psychoeducation du patient doit faire partie de l’arsenal therapeutique de la schizophrenie.

Abstract: Le suivi somatique d’un patient schizophrene represente une vraie diffi culte. L’acteur au centre de ces soins somatiques devrait etre le medecin generaliste, surtout depuis la mise en place du parcours de soins coordonnes. Mais en pratique quotidienne, force est de constater que ce n’est vraiment pas le cas pour nos patients schizophrenes. Les besoins de nos patients schizophrenes sont pourtant les memes que ceux de la population generale : problemes somatiques minimes (angine, grippe...), avis somatique en urgence (chute, perte de connaissance...), consultations de specialistes, preparation d’intervention chirurgicale... Plus specifi quement pour eux, une prise en charge somatique peut etre necessaire lorsqu’ils sont hospitalises en psychiatrie, ce qui met en avant des diffi cultes particulieres dans les hopitaux psychiatriques comme dans les hopitaux generaux, mais que nous n’aborderons pas ici. Pourquoi les patients schizophrenes ont une si grande diffi culte dans l’acces aux soins ? Est-ce lie a la reticence des patients a se prendre en charge sur le plan somatique ? A celle des medecins generalistes a prendre en charge des patients qui ont des troubles du comportement ou un discours peu coherent ? Ou a celle des psychiatres on a ainsi constate que 80 % des patients adresses au psychiatre par les medecins generalistes ont ulterieurement un suivi exclusif par le psychiatre [1, 2] ? Ces reticences multiples et diverses mettent en evidence l’ampleur du probleme. Face a ces diffi cultes, la strategie la plus adaptee apparait autour de la mise en place d’un reel partenariat entre les differents intervenants potentiels, en favorisant le decloisonnement : un vrai travail de soins partages qui permettrait d’augmenter l’interface entre les psychiatres et les medecins generalistes. Nous nous proposons de rapporter ici l’exemple du Reseau pour la Promotion de la Sante Mentale Yvelines sud (RPSMYS) qui tente de repondre a ces diffi cultes de cette maniere.

Abstract: Sol-gel material based mirrors have been produced by forming alternate layers of high refractive index and low refractive index thin films. These mirrors have proven to have a high laser induced damage threshold [LIDT]. Using nitric acid stabilized zirconia derived from zirconium-n-propoxide and base catalyzed silica, a 16 layer mirror with a reflectivity of better than 94% at 351 nm and 45° angle of incidence was fabricated. This had an LIDT of 7.7 J/cm2 at 351 nm with a 0.7 ns pulse width. Crazing prevented further layers being deposited. Both spin and dip coating were attempted with dip coating yielding the best results.

Abstract: La Maladie Maniaco-Depressive (MMD) ou Trouble Bipolaire est une maladie qui debute classiquement entre 30 et 40 ans. C’est une maladie a determinisme genetique et l’on retrouve souvent plusieurs patients atteints dans une meme famille. Sur le plan clinique, la MMD se caracterise par la survenue de facon recurrente d’episodes thymiques : des episodes maniaques et/ou des episodes depressifs avec entre chacun de ces episodes des intervalles libres au cours desquels on constate un retour a l’etat initial du patient. Lors des episodes maniaques les patients sont gais, hyperactifs tant sur le plan moteur qu’intellectuel, ils sont souvent insomniaques mais ne se sentent pas fatigues, se trouvent tres en forme et entreprennent de nombreux projets. A l’inverse, lors d’episodes depressifs, les patients sont tristes, ralentis, anxieux, insomniaques, douloureux. La succession de ces episodes thymiques est tres variable d’un patient a l’autre, certains patients faisant un, deux episodes dans leur vie, d’autres en faisant plusieurs par an, en sachant que les episodes depressifs sont plus frequents que les episodes maniaques, que certaines MMD se manifestent uniquement par des episodes depressifs recurrents (MMD unipolaire depressive), tandis que d’autres, beaucoup plus rarement, se manifestent par la recurrence d’episodes maniaques (MMD unipolaire maniaque). Le plus souvent les patients alternent des episodes de manies et des episodes de depression plus ou moins regulierement : on parle de troubles bipolaires. Sur le plan therapeutique, nous disposons pour cette maladie de traitements specifiques preventifs des recidives : les thymoregulateurs.

Abstract: Highly porous pure and polyethyleneglycol (PEG)-doped silica gels have been prepared from tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in ethanol using NH4OH base-catalysis. Addition of PEG to the SiO2-systemincreases the average particle size and most frequent pore diameter of the resultant gels while their total surface areadecreases. The viscosity of the solincreases with PEG concentration and passes through a maximum with increasing molecular weight at PEG 200. Results obtained indicate a definite interaction of the polymer with SiO2 and that this interaction is not as a result of direct formation of Si−O−C linkage, but is more likely to be, due to hydrogen bonding between the hydrated PEG and the Si−O−Si network. Structure-process correlations are considered.

Phys. 109, 073501 (2011)], which employs a hierarchy of simulation methods over a range of length scales to calculate strength from first principles.

Abstract: We report observations of the gyrotropic change in magnetic susceptibility of the Fe3+ electron paramagnetic resonance at 12.037GHz (between spin states |‹ and |3/2‹) in sapphire with respect to applied magnetic field. Measurements were made by observing the response of the high-Q Whispering Gallery doublet (WGH ±17,0,0 ) in a Hemex sapphire resonator cooled to 5 K. The doublets initially existed as standing waves at zero field and were transformed to traveling waves due to the gyrotropic response.

Abstract: Silica sol-gel single layer AR coatings are used in high peak power pulsed lasers due to their high laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) and their low refractive index (1.22). We have used sol-gel processing to spin and dip coat multilayers of alternating high index (zirconia/hafnia) and low index (base catalysed silica) sol-gels on to fused silica substrates. When tailored at the correct thickness these stacks have shown >95% reflectivity at 355 nm and normal incidence whilst retaining a high LIDT. Depth profiling using Dynamic Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (DSIMS) and Rutherford back scattering (RBS) through these multilayer coatings has revealed the effect of increasing the number of layers in the stack. Results are presented for both spin and dip coated multilayers and a significant difference in the interfacial boundary is seen between the two coating processes. These differences are related to changes in the LIDT of the coatings. Individual layer thicknesses were estimated using this technique and compared to values gained from UV-Visible spectroscopy. TEM analysis of an ion-milled cross-section of the multilayers was performed showing the colloidal silica coatings and the depth of interpenetration of the interfaces.

Abstract: We report in this paper the first observation of bimodal maser operation in a whispering gallery (WG) mode oscillator. The characteristics of the maser are discussed under operation in both the single and bimodal regimes. A stability measurement of the difference frequency between the maser doublet signals revealed operation for the first time at the fundamental thermal noise limit of the maser.

Abstract: The Fe3+: Al2O3 Whispering Gallery Mode Maser Oscillator is presented in this paper. Preliminary results already show a frequency stability of about 10−14 for integration times up to 30s. A model combining the rate equations and the electromagnetic field in the sapphire is presented. Paramagnetic properties and maser sensitivity to external parameters have been conducted to verify the validity of our model.

Abstract: A well diagnosed campaign of supersonic, diffusive radiation flow experiments has been fielded on the National Ignition Facility. These experiments have used the accurate measurements of delivered laser energy and foam density to enable an investigation into SESAME's tabulated equation-of-state values and CASSANDRA's predicted opacity values for the low-density C8H7Cl foam used throughout the campaign. We report that the results from initial simulations under-predicted the arrival time of the radiation wave through the foam by ≈22%. A simulation study was conducted that artificially scaled the equation-of-state and opacity with the intended aim of quantifying the systematic offsets in both CASSANDRA and SESAME. Two separate hypotheses which describe these errors have been tested using the entire ensemble of data, with one being supported by these data.

Abstract: International audience; This paper reports on the design and the measurement of low phase noise X-band oscillators combining a room temperature high-Q whispering gallery mode (WGM) sapphire resonator and an ultra-low phase noise sustaining amplifier. The resonator thermal configuration has been optimized leading to a thermal frequency sensitivity of -0.05 ppm/K. Compact microstrip DBR (dual behavior resonators) filters have been realized to suppress cavity spurious modes. High performance commercially available amplifiers have been tested. Owing to the low phase noise, the measurement of oscillators requires cross-correlation and some unusual solutions. X-band oscillators typical phase noise as low as -36 dB.rad 2 /Hz at 1 Hz Fourier frequency, -145 dB.rad 2 /Hz at 10 kHz offset and -160 dB.rad 2 /Hz at 100 kHz from the carrier have been measured. Parallely, two excellent and original double stage amplifiers based on a Si-SiGe transistors cascade (power gain=8.2 dB - phase noise performances : -168 dB.rad 2 /Hz at 100kHz offset) have been designed, precisely modeled (non-linear and noise modeling) and optimized thanks to dedicated CAD techniques

Abstract: In a preceding publication, we reported the experimental demonstration of maser oscillation at 12.04 GHz in a cryogenic sapphire whispering-gallery-mode resonator, where the resonator's dielectric ring contained a low concentration of paramagnetic Fe3+ ions within its monocrystalline sapphire lattice. Our preliminary measurements revealed a frequency stability of the order of 2.5 times 10-14 in a non-optimized design. In this paper, we report new measurements made on this same resonator to determine more precisely the main parameters affecting the dynamics of the Fe3+ ions when exposed to a microwave signal within their ESR bandwidth

Abstract: This paper presents experimental and simulation studies on High overtone bulk acoustic resonators (HBAR). The devices are based on a thin piezoelectric layer of Aluminum Nitride (AlN) deposited on a bulk substrate. A high order longi- tudinal wave is excited by the AlN layer and propagating in the substrate. In order to validate the computations, resonators have been fabricated and tested experimentally. Low measurements have been also performed to check the Q factor limitations. The comparison between calculations and measurements are presented in the paper. The potential applications of such resonators in term of microwave stabilized sources or filters are discussed. I. INTRODUCTION During the past twenty years, several acoustic devices have been investigated for filters and sources applications. Different kinds of resonators using SAW, SSBAW, BAW have been considered with variable interest considering their skills (i.e performance, cost, complexity, etc). Nowadays the frequency range of sources and filters tend to overpass the Gigahertz. The classical technics of lithography are rising their upper limits in this range of frequencies. Consequently, surface wave seem to be unappropriated for high frequency applications. Even if traditional bulk resonators such as Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) are frequency limited by practical usable minimum thickness, improvements of thin piezoelectric layer sputtering have grown the interest for thin Film Acoustic Bulk Resonators (FBAR) (1). Several approaches have been explored in FBAR fabrication like membrane structures or solidly mounted resonators. This kind of resonators offers a large variety of substrates employing integrated circuit type wafer scale processing. Filters with low losses and large band- pass have been achieved with FBARs but the quality factor is rather low due to piezoelectric quality of thin deposited films . In the 80's, several papers have emphasized the possibility of HBAR to present high Q at frequencies of several GHz. High overtone resonators consist of a piezoelectric film acting as a transducer to generate a standing wave resonance in a several wavelenghts thick substrate. The transducer itself occupies a small fraction of the resonator volume and most of the energy is stored in the substrate. The quality factor mainly depends on the acoustic losses of the substrate. Resonances occur at frequencies where the total resonator thickness corresponds to one or more half wavelengths. To reach high frequencies, high order resonances are used. In order to control the working fre- quency, the response has to be filtered because each resonance occur every fundamental frequency of the resonator given by: f0 = vl 2e (1) where vl is the velocity of the longitudinal wave in the substrate and e the thickness of the resonator. As shown in Eq.1, the frequency shift between two consecutive resonances is reduced if the substrate is thinned. An original method of filtering has been developed by using a FBAR ladder filter (2). In this study, HBARs have been realized using C-axis normal aluminum nitride (AlN) films for transduction, quartz has been used for substrate material.

Abstract: This paper reports on ultra-low phase noise microwave oscillators combining a room temperature high-Q whispering gallery mode (WGM) sapphire resonator and an ultra-low phase noise SiGe HBT based amplifier. An original symmetrical duralumin cavity has been designed in order to improve the thermal behavior of the resonator. Coupled to a high-precision electronic temperature controller, the structure presents a sensitivity to thermal fluctuations of -0.05 ppm/K. The non-linear and noise modelling of different microwave SiGe amplifiers have been realized in order to compute and optimize their phase noise performances. An original double stage amplifier, whose phase noise performances are very close of those of a single stage one, has been designed for X-band applications. C-band oscillators phase noise as low as -42 dB.rad2.Hz1at 1 Hz Fourier frequency and -135 dB.rad2.Hz1 at 1 kHz offset have been measured. X-band oscillators simulated phase noise results foresee very encouraging results

Abstract: Residual paramagnetic impurities are present in high quality sapphire crystal. This phenomenon was exploited as paramagnetic spin compensation at liquid helium temperature to build high Q cryogenic sapphire resonator oscillators (CSRO). In this paper we present the characterization of intentionally Ti3+ and Ti4+ doped sapphire resonator oscillators. For the Ti3+ resonator we used the 12.7 GHz mode operating at 34K. This resonator exhibited a frequency stability of order 2 times 10-3 for 8s < tau < 20s with the use of a Gifford-McMahon cryocooler as a cold source. This corresponds to state-of-the-art line splitting of the order of 10 -7. A second experiment with a pulse tube cryocooler shows an improvement in the short term frequency stability. The Ti4+ resonator oscillator at 13.8 GHz exhibited a frequency stability of 7 times 10-14 at tau = 16s

Abstract: We present in this paper the progress report of the building of two cryogenic sapphire oscillators (CSO) at LPMO. A description of our original resonator configuration is discussed. The measurement of a short-term frequency instability better than 2middot10 -14 for short integration times is presented. We also demonstrated an exceptional long term frequency stability of better than 5middot10 -14 over one day. We finally report the usefullness of CSO in the characterization of state of the art ultra stable quartz cristal oscillators in a simple way of measurement.
