Glacier tables are structures frequently encountered on temperate glaciers. They consist of a rock supported by a narrow ice foot which forms through differential melting of the ice. In this article, we investigate their formation by following their dynamics on the Mer de Glace (the Alps, France). We report field measurements of four specific glacier tables over the course of several days, as well as snapshot measurements of a field of 80 tables performed on a given day. We develop a simple model accounting for the various mechanisms of the heat transfer on the glacier using local meteorological data, which displays a quantitative agreement with the field measurements. We show that the formation of glacier tables is controlled by the global heat flux received by the rocks, which causes the ice underneath to melt at a rate proportional to the one of the surrounding ice. Under large rocks the ice ablation rate is reduced compared to bare ice, leading to the formation of glacier tables. This thermal insulation effect is due to the warmer surface temperature of rocks compared to the ice, which affects the net long-wave and turbulent fluxes. While the short-wave radiation, which is the main source of heat, is slightly more absorbed by the rocks than the ice, it plays an indirect role in the insulation by inducing a thermal gradient across the rocks which warms them. Under a critical size, however, rocks can enhance ice melting and consequently sink into the ice surface. This happens when the insulation effect is too weak to compensate for a geometrical amplification effect: the external heat fluxes are received on a larger surface than the contact area with the ice. We identified the main parameters controlling the ability of a rock to form a glacier table: the rock thickness, its aspect ratio, and the ratio between the averaged turbulent and short-wave heat fluxes.

When a hex nut or a ridged-edge coin placed inside an inflated rubber balloon is spun vigorously, it emits a surprisingly loud and clear sound as the spinning object impacts the rubber and triggers vibrations of the membrane, a phenomenon known as the screaming balloon. We identify the mechanisms behind the acoustic emission and show that the fundamental frequency of the sound is given solely by the rate of successive impacts of the spinning object onto the membrane as it rolls without slipping. A counterintuitive observation is that the acoustic power emitted by a given ridged-edge object remains independent of the size of the balloon (over a wide range of volume) in which it spins. This experimental finding is explained by the influence of the tension within the membrane on the acoustic intensity. Finally, we propose a scaling law for the frequency dependence of the acoustic intensity and show that the sound level depends greatly on the number of ridges on the edge of the spinning object. Dirt cones are meter-scale structures encountered at the surface of glaciers, which consist of ice cones covered by a thin layer of ashes, sand, or gravel, and which form naturally from an initial patch of debris. In this article, we report field observations of cone formation in the French Alps, laboratory-scale experiments reproducing these structures in a controlled environment, and two-dimensional discrete-element-method-finite-element-method numerical simulations coupling the grain mechanics and thermal effects. We show that cone formation originates from the insulating properties of the granular layer, which reduces ice melting underneath as compared to bare ice melting. This differential ablation deforms the ice surface and induces a quasistatic flow of grains that leads to a conic shape, as the thermal length become small compared to the structure size. The cone grows until it reaches a steady state in which the insulation provided by the dirt layer exactly compensates for the heat flux coming from the increased external surface of the structure. These results allowed us to identify the key physical mechanisms at play and to develop a model able to quantitatively reproduce the various field observations and experimental findings.

In this article, the formation of Zen stones on frozen lakes and the shape of the resulting pedestal are elucidated. Zen stones are natural structures in which a stone, initially resting on an ice surface, ends up balanced atop a narrow ice pedestal. We provide a physical explanation for their formation, sometimes believed to be caused by the melting of the ice. Instead, we show that slow surface sublimation is indeed the physical mechanism responsible for the differential ablation. Far from the stone, the sublimation rate is governed by the diffuse sunlight, while in its vicinity, the shade it creates inhibits the sublimation process. We reproduced the phenomenon in laboratory-scale experiments conducted in a lyophilizer and studied the dynamics of the morphogenesis. In this apparatus, which imposes controlled constant sublimation rate, a variety of model stones consisting of metal disks was used, which allows us to rule out the possible influence of the thermal conduction in the morphogenesis process. Instead, we show that the stone only acts as an umbrella whose shade hinders the sublimation, hence protecting the ice underneath, which leads to the formation of the pedestal. Numerical simulations, in which the local ablation rate of the surface depends solely on the visible portion of the sky, allow us to study the influence of the shape of the stone on the formation of the ice foot. A glacier table consists of a rock supported by a slender column of ice and form naturally on glaciers. We investigate the onset of their formation at a smaller scale in a controlled environment. Depending on the size and thermal conductivity of a cap, it can either form of a table standing on an ice foot, or sink into the ice block. A one-dimension conduction model shows that the differential ice melting is controlled by a competition between two effects: a geometrical amplification, and a heat flux reduction due to the higher temperature of the cap as compared to the ice. Our model captures the transition between the two regimes and identifies a dimensionless number which controls the onset of glacier tables formation.

The transitions between two states of a bistable system are investigated experimentally and analyzed in the framework of rare-event statistics. Considering a disk pendulum swept by a flow in a wind tunnel, bistability between two aerodynamic branches is observed, with spontaneous transitions from one branch to the other. The waiting times before spontaneous transition are distributed following a double exponential as a function of the control parameter, spanning 4 orders of magnitude in time, for both transitions. Inspired by a model originally applied to the transition to turbulence, we show that, for the disk pendulum, both transitions are controlled by rare events of the aerodynamic forces acting on the disk which we propose to link in particular to the vortex shedding-induced fluctuations. Beyond the aerodynamic aspects, this work has interesting fundamental outcomes regarding the broad field of rare events in out-of-equilibrium systems.

We investigate the sedimentation of initially packed paramagnetic particles in the presence of a homogeneous external magnetic field, in a Hele-Shaw cell filled with water. Although the magnetic susceptibility of the particles is small and the particle-particle-induced magnetic interactions are significantly smaller compared to the gravitational acceleration, we do observe a measurable reduction of the decompaction rate as the amplitude of the applied magnetic field is increased. While induced magnetic dipole-dipole interactions between particles can be either attractive or repulsive depending on the particles relative alignment, our observations reveal an effective overall enhancement of the cohesion of the initial pack of particles due to the induced interactions, very likely promoting internal chain forces in the initial pack of particles. The influence of the magnetic field on the particles once they disperse after being decompacted is, however, found to remain marginal.

Pattern formation, observed experimentally in a radio-frequency plasma in annular geometry, and characterized by azimuthal symmetry breaking of the plasma parameters, is reported. The azimuthal modulation increases with increasing pressure in the range 1-300 Pa. These experimental observations are accurately described by a fluid model in which the transport coefficients are computed from a 0D Boltzmann kinetic equation. A linear stability analysis shows that unstable modulations develop at low and intermediate pressures, following an instability mechanism due to an energy transport effect-the instability mechanism lies in the sign of off-diagonal terms for the electron particles and energy fluxes expressed as functions of gradients of the plasma density and the electron temperature. This model is an excellent candidate to explain the occurrence of striations in radio-frequency plasmas.

The shape of closed strings and chains propelled at a constant velocity and launched at an angle relative to gravity is studied experimentally, theoretically, and numerically. At low velocity, strings adopt a shape close to the well-known catenary, while at high velocity, they can rise to a nearly horizontal profile. We show that the latter regime can be counterintuitively attributed to aerodynamic effects, although the ambient air exerts no lift on a string moving longitudinally along its profile. A theoretical approach along with numerical simulations confirms these observations and allows one to predict the shape of any closed string or chain. Moreover, depending of the regime, waves rising from any local perturbation along the string may travel either upstream or downstream and seem to die out at the turning point. We show that these observations can be explained by the tension profile along the string, which strongly depends on the aerodynamic effects relative to the weight, and our theoretical analysis allows us to predict the position of the wave front.

A bidimensional array of magnets whose magnetic moments share the same vertical orientation, and lying on a planar surface, can be gradually compacted. As the density reaches a threshold, the assembly becomes unstable, and the magnets violently pop out of plane. In this Letter, we investigate experimentally and theoretically the maximum packing fraction (or density) of a bidimensional planar assembly of identical cylindrical magnets. We show that the instability can be attributed to local fluctuations of the altitude of the magnets on the planar surface. The maximum density is theoretically predicted assuming dipolar interactions between the magnets and is in excellent agreement with experimental results using a variety of cylindrical magnets.

We present results from consistent dynamo simulations, where the electrically conducting and incompressible flow inside a cylinder vessel is forced by moving impellers numerically implemented by a penalization method. The numerical scheme models jumps of magnetic permeability for the solid impellers, resembling various configurations tested experimentally in the von Kármán sodium experiment. The most striking experimental observations are reproduced in our set of simulations. In particular, we report on the existence of a time-averaged axisymmetric dynamo mode, self-consistently generated when the magnetic permeability of the impellers exceeds a threshold. We describe a possible scenario involving both the turbulent flow in the vicinity of the impellers and the high magnetic permeability of the impellers.

We report an experimental study of the dynamics of two coupled magnetic dipoles. The experiment consists in two coplanar permanent disk magnets separated by a distance d, each allowed to rotate on a fixed parallel axis-each magnet's axis being perpendicular to its dipolar moment vector. A torque of adjustable strength can be externally applied to one of the magnets, the other magnet being free. The driving torque may be time-independent or temporally fluctuating. We study the influence of the parameters of the driving torque on the dynamics of the coupled system, in particular the emergence of dynamical regimes such as stochastic reversals. We report transitions between stationary and stochastic reversal regimes. All the observed features can be understood by a simple mechanical dynamical model. The transition between statistically stationary regimes and reversals is explained introducing an effective potential energy incorporating both the coupling between magnets and the external driving. Relations between this simple experimental model with macroscopic models of magnetic spin coupling, as well as with chaotic reversals of turbulent dynamos, are discussed.

Hydrodynamic and magnetic behaviors in a modified experimental setup of the von Kármán sodium flow-where one disk has been replaced by a propeller-are investigated. When the rotation frequencies of the disk and the propeller are different, we show that the fully turbulent hydrodynamic flow undergoes a global bifurcation between two configurations. The bistability of these flow configurations is associated with the dynamics of the central shear layer. The bistable flows are shown to have different dynamo efficiencies; thus for a given rotation rate of the soft-iron disk, two distinct magnetic behaviors are observed depending on the flow configuration. The hydrodynamic transition controls the magnetic field behavior, and bifurcations between high and low magnetic field branches are investigated.

We analyze time series stemming from experiments and direct numerical simulations of hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. Simulations are done in periodic boxes, but with a volumetric forcing chosen to mimic the geometry of the flow in the experiments, the von Kármán swirling flow between two counterrotating impellers. Parameters in the simulations are chosen to (within computational limitations) allow comparisons between the experiments and the numerical results. Conducting fluids are considered in all cases. Two different configurations are considered: a case with a weak externally imposed magnetic field and a case with self-sustained magnetic fields. Evidence of long-term memory and 1/f noise is observed in experiments and simulations, in the case with weak magnetic field associated with the hydrodynamic behavior of the shear layer in the von Kármán flow, and in the dynamo case associated with slow magnetohydrodynamic behavior of the large-scale magnetic field.

Predicting dynamo self-generation in liquid metal experiments has been an ongoing question for many years. In contrast to simple dynamical systems for which reliable techniques have been developed, the ability to predict the dynamo capacity of a flow and the estimate of the corresponding critical value of the magnetic Reynolds number (the control parameter of the instability) has been elusive, partly due to the high level of turbulent fluctuations of flows in such experiments (with kinetic Reynolds numbers in excess of 10(6)). We address these issues here, using the von Kármán sodium experiment and studying its response to an externally applied magnetic field. We first show that a dynamo threshold can be estimated from analysis related to critical slowing down and susceptibility divergence, in configurations for which dynamo action is indeed observed. These approaches are then applied to flow configurations that have failed to self-generate magnetic fields within operational limits, and we quantify the dynamo capacity of these configurations.

We report the first experimental observation of a spatially localized dynamo magnetic field, a common feature of astrophysical dynamos and convective dynamo simulations. When the two propellers of the von Kármán sodium experiment are driven at frequencies that differ by 15%, the mean magnetic field's energy measured close to the slower disk is nearly 10 times larger than the one close to the faster one. This strong localization of the magnetic field when a symmetry of the forcing is broken is in good agreement with a prediction based on the interaction between a dipolar and a quadrupolar magnetic mode., (© 2012 American Physical Society)

A new type of velocimeter, capable of local velocity measurements in conducting fluids, is introduced. The principle of the "magnetic-distortion probe" is based on the measurement of the induced magnetic field by the flow of a conducting fluid in the vicinity of a localized magnetic field. The new velocimeter has no moving parts, and can be enclosed in a sealed cap, easing the implementation in harsh environments, such as liquid metals. The proposed method allows one to probe both the continuous part and fluctuations of the velocity, the temporal and spatial resolution being linked to the actual geometric configuration of the probe. A prototype probe has been tested in a gallinstan pipe flow and in a fully turbulent flow of liquid gallium generated by the counter rotation of two coaxial impellers in a cylinder. The signals have been compared to a reference potential probe and show very good agreement both for time-averaged velocities and turbulent fluctuations. The prototype is shown to detect motion from a few cm s(-1) to a few m s(-1). We report the observation of several dynamical regimes of the magnetic field generated by a turbulent flow of liquid sodium (VKS experiment). Stationary dynamos, transitions to relaxation cycles or to intermittent bursts, and random field reversals occur in a fairly small range of parameters. Large scale dynamics of the magnetic field result from the interactions of a few modes. The low dimensional nature of these dynamics is not smeared out by the very strong turbulent fluctuations of the flow.

The self-consistently generated current-free electric double layer (DL) is shown to scale up with the source tube diameter and appears not to be affected by rf driving frequency and changes in reactor geometry. This Letter presents the first simultaneous measurements of local plasma potential and beam energy as a function of axial position. The DL is shown to be no more than 5 mm thick (20 D lengths) and positioned just downstream of the maximum in the magnetic field gradient. Furthermore, its position relative to the magnetic field is observed to be invariant as the magnetic field is translated axially. Measurements of the potential drop across the DL are presented for pressures down to 0.09 mTorr and the DL strength (phiDL/T(e)) is determined to be between 5 and 7.
