Abstract

The development of detectors that provide high resolution in four dimensions has attracted wide-spread interest in the scientific community for applications in high-energy physics, nuclear physics, medical imaging, mass spectroscopy as well as quantum information. However, finding a technology capable of fulfilling such aspiration proved to be an arduous task. Among other silicon-based candidates, the Low-Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) has already shown excellent timing performances but proved to be unsuitable for fine pixelization. Therefore, the AC-coupled LGAD (AC-LGAD) approach was introduced to provide high resolution in both time and space, making it a promising candidate for future 4D detectors. However, appropriate readout electronics must be developed to match the sensor's fast-time and fine-pitch capabilities. This is currently a major technological challenge. In this paper, we test AC-LGAD prototypes read out by the fast-time ASIC ALTIROC 0, originally developed for the readout of DC-coupled LGADs for the ATLAS experiment at the High Luminosity-LHC. Signal generated by either betas from a 90Sr source or a focused infra-red laser were analyzed. This paper details the first successful readout of an AC-LGAD sensor using a readout chip. This result will pave the way for the design and construction of a new generation of AC-LGAD-based 4D detectors.

International audience; 1 Abstract—Designed and characterized by the HGTD collaboration, ALTIROC belongs to the family of readout ASICs used at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for the High Luminosity-LHC upgrade. ALTIROC1 is a 25-channel ASIC designed in CMOS 130 nm to read out the 5 x 5 matrix of 1.3 mm x 1.3 mm Low Gain Avalanche Diodes (LGAD) of the ATLAS HGTD detector. The targeted combined time resolution of the sensor and its readout electronics from 35 ps/hit (initial) to 70 ps/hit (end of operational lifetime). Each ASIC channel integrates an RF preamplifier followed by a high speed discriminator and two TDCs for Time-of-Arrival and Time-Over-Threshold measurements as well as a local memory. This front-end must exhibit an extremely low jitter noise while keeping a challenging power consumption of less than 4.5 mW per channel. This conference proceeding summarizes the ASIC's architecture, its measured performances compared to simulation, along with the requirements for the HEP experiments.

Abstract

A High-Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) is proposed based on the Low-Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) for the ATLAS experiment to satisfy the time resolution requirement for the up-coming High Luminosity at LHC (HL-LHC). We report on beam test results for two proto-types LGADs (BV60 and BV170) developed for the HGTD. Such modules were manufactured by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) collaborated with Novel Device Laboratory (NDL) of the Beijing Normal University. The beam tests were performed with 5 GeV electron beam at DESY. The timing performance of the LGADs was compared to a trigger counter consisting of a quartz bar coupled to a SiPM readout while extracting reference SiPM by fitting with a Gaussian function. The time resolution was obtained as 41 ps and 63 ps for the BV60 and the BV170, respectively. To meet the timing resolution requirement of up-coming High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), a new detector based on the Low-Gain Avalanche Detector(LGAD), High-Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD), is under intensive research in ATLAS. Two types of IHEP-NDL LGADs(BV60 and BV170) for this update is being developed by Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of Chinese Academic of Sciences (CAS) cooperated with Novel Device Laboratory (NDL) of Beijing Normal University and they are now under detailed study. These detectors are tested with $5GeV$ electron beam at DESY. A SiPM detector is chosen as a reference detector to get the timing resolution of LGADs. The fluctuation of time difference between LGAD and SiPM is extracted by fitting with a Gaussian function. Constant fraction discriminator (CFD) method is used to mitigate the effect of time walk. The timing resolution of $41 \pm 1 ps$ and $63 \pm 1 ps$ are obtained for BV60 and BV170 respectively.

Abstract

International audience; The analog front-end readout electronics of the ATLAS Liquid Argon (LAr) Calorimeter will be replaced by a single chip for the phase II of the high luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The cornerstone of the circuit is the preamplifier which is very demanding in terms of low noise (0.4 nV/√Hz), large dynamic range (up to 10 mA, 16 bits) and precise input impedance (25 or 50 Ohms) to terminate the cables from the detector. LAUROC1 ASIC integrates an innovative architecture to fulfil these requirements. Detailed measurements are presented.

Abstract

For the High-Luminosity phase of LHC, the ATLAS experiment is proposing the addition of a High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) in the forward region to mitigate the effects of the increased pile-up. The chosen detection technology is Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) silicon sensors that can provide an excellent timing resolution below 50 ps. The front-end read-out ASIC must maintain the performance of the sensor, while keeping low power consumption. This paper presents the results on the first prototype of a front-end ASIC, named ALTIROC0, which contains the analog stages (preamplifier and discriminator) of the read-out chip. The ASIC was characterised both alone and as part of a module with a 2$\times$2 LGAD array of 1.1$\times$1.1 mm$^2$ pads bump-bonded to it. The various contributions of the electronics to the time resolution were investigated in test-bench measurements with a calibration setup. Both when the ASIC is alone or with a bump-bonded sensor, the jitter of the ASIC is better than 20 ps for an injected charge of 10 fC. The time walk effect that arises from the different response of the preamplifier for various injected charges can be corrected up to 10 ps using a Time Over Threshold measurement. The combined performance of the ASIC and the LGAD sensor, which was measured during a beam test campaign in October 2018 with pions of 120 GeV energy at the CERN SPS, is around 40 ps for all measured modules. The setup comprised seven layers of silicon sensors. Each layer comprised four sensors, with each sensor containing an array of 256 5.5×5.5 mm$^2$ silicon PIN diodes. The four sensors covered a total area of 18 × 18 cm and comprised a total of 1024 channels. The readout was split into a trigger line and a charge signal line. Key performance results for signal over noise for the two output lines are presented, together with a study of the uniformity of the detector response. Abstract

An ASIC named CATIROC (Charge And Time Integrated Read Out Chip) has been developed for the next-generation neutrino experiments using a large number of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). Each CATIROC provides the time and the charge measurements for 16 configurable input channels operating in trigger-less mode. Originally designed for the light emission in water Cherenkov detectors, we show in this paper that its use can be extended to liquid-scintillator based experiments. The $\sim$26000 3-inch PMTs of the JUNO experiment, under construction in China, is a case in point. This paper describes the features of CATIROC with a special attention to the most critical points for its application to the time profile of the light emission in liquid scintillators. The achieved performances in both charge and time measurements can be inputs for future high-precision experiments making use of PMTs or other photo-sensitive detectors., 25 pages, 28 figures, accepted on JINST

Abstract

International audience; THE high-luminosity phase of CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) is foreseen to start in 2026 [1] . The expected increase of the pile-up due to the 200 interactions per bunch crossing will have a severe impact on the physics. A High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) is proposed in front of the Liquid Argon End-Cap calorimeters for pile-up mitigation at Level-0 trigger level and in the offline reconstruction. Four layers of very thin (50 µm) Low Gain Avalanche Diodes (LGAD), with a transverse size of 1.3 x 1.3 mm 2 , are foreseen to provide precise timing information for charged and neutral particles with a time resolution of about 30 pico-seconds per MIP.

Abstract

Triroc is the latest addition to SiPM readout ASICs family developed at Weeroc, a start-up company from the Omega microelectronics group of IN2P3/CNRS. This chip is developed under the framework TRIMAGE European project which is aimed for building a cost effective tri-modal PET/MR/EEG brain scan. To ensure the flexibility and compatibility with any SiPM in the market, the ASIC is designed to be capable of accepting negative and positive polarity input signals. This 64-channel ASIC, is suitable for SiPM readout which requires high accuracy timing and charge measurements. Targeted applications would be PET prototyping with time-of-flight capability. Main features of Triroc includes high dynamic range ADC up to 2500 photoelectrons and TDC fine time binning of 40 ps. Triroc requires very minimal external components which means it is a good contender for compact multichannel PET prototyping. Triroc is designed by using AMS $0.35 ~\mu\hbox{m}$ SiGe technology and it was submitted in March 2014. The detail design of this chip will be presented.

Abstract

International audience; This paper describes the development of a common front-end test stand for the analog ASICs, which are part of the effort to develop the front-end electronics for the ATLAS LAr calorimeter HL-LHC (High Luminosity LHC) upgrade. The common test stand consists of the front-end test board, toy calorimeters, ASIC mezzanine boards and the DAQ system. The front-end test board is the bridge between the DAQ system and the ASIC mezzanine, it integrates two 16-channel ADCs for digitizing the outputs of the analog ASIC and a calibration pulse generator for detector signal injection. The analog ASICs under test are mounted on the ASIC mezzanine boards, their outputs are connected to the front-end test board through an FMC connector. A Xilinx ZC706 evaluation board is utilized as the DAQ board for this test stand, a Gigabit Ethernet link is implemented on the DAQ board for slow control, configuration and ADC data transmission. The tests of two front-end analog ASICs with this test stand are ongoing. The preliminary test results demonstrated that this test stand is suitable for the testing of the multi-channel analog ASICs developed for the LAr Calorimeter HL-LHC upgrade.

International audience; ALTIROC0 is an 8-channel ASIC prototype designed to readout 1x1 or 2x2 mm2 50 µm thick Low Gain Avalanche Diodes (LGAD) of the ATLAS High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD). The targeted combined time resolution of the sensor and the readout electronics is 30 ps for one MIP. Each analog channel of the ASIC must exhibit an extremely low jitter to ensure this challenging time resolution, while keeping a low power consumption of 2 mW/channel. A “Time Over Threshold” and a “Constant Fraction Discriminator” architecture are integrated to correct for the time walk. Test bench measurements performed on the ASIC received in April 2017 are presented.

Abstract

International audience; The ASIC CATIROC (Charge And Time Integrated Read Out Chip) is a complete read-out chip designed to read arrays of 16 photomultipliers (PMTs). It finds a valuable application in the content of the JUNO (Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory) experiment [1], a liquid scintillator antineutrino detector with a double calorimetry system combining about 17k 20″ PMTs (Large PMTs system) and around 25k 3″ PMTs (Small PMTs system). A front-end electronics based on the ASIC CATIROC matches well within the 3″ PMTs system specifications as explained in this paper. CATIROC is a SoC (System on Chip) that processes analog signals up to the digitization to reduce the cost and cables number. The ASIC is composed of 16 independent channels that work in triggerless mode, auto-triggering on the single photo-electron (PE). It provides a charge measurement with a charge resolution of 15 fC and a timing information with a precision of 200 ps rms.

Abstract

International audience; The readout electronics of the ATLAS Liquid Argon (LAr) Calorimeter (for the phase II of the high luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN) will be replaced and integrated in a single chip in order to reduce the power dissipation by an order of magnitude and to provide fully digital data. The cornerstone of the circuit is the preamplifier which is very demanding in terms of low noise, large dynamic range (at least 16 bits) and precise input impedance (25 or 50 Ohms) to terminate the cables from the detector. An innovative architecture is proposed to fulfill these requirements: a current conveyer and a single resistor are imbedded as feedback of a low noise amplifier. This architecture ensures accurate input impedance over a large frequency range (100MHz) as well as input current range (10mA). The noise remains low thanks to this architecture which acts as an “electronically cooled” resistor out of an ultra-low noise amplifier (0.4 n V / √Hz). This design provides at the same time a current and a voltage output which could be used as high and low gain paths. An anti-saturation system is embedded to switch off the high gain when is saturated. “LAUROC”, which stands for Liquid Argon Upgrade Read-Out Chip, represents the first step of this new chip development designed in TSMC 130nm technology by OMEGA. The chip was sent in fabrication in April and is expected during summer to be tested in laboratory on a test board developed by LAL group.

Abstract

Triroc is a highly configurable SiPM readout ASIC intended for PET prototyping with time-of-flight capability. This 64-channel ASIC incorporates a dual triggering system that will flag the arrival photons and provides energy cut-off at a specified level. Time and charge measurements are performed internally by 40ps-bin TDC and 10-bit ADC. The analog design of this ASIC has been optimized for accepting positive and negative polarity inputs while maintaining nearly similar performances for both input polarities. Channel-by-channel input DC level adjustment is also available in order to correct the non-uniformity of SiPM array and fine tuning each pixel gain. Additionally, the digital conversions are assignable to other analog components, which extends the suitability of Triroc for any application requiring SiPM readout.

Abstract

International audience; CATIROC (Charge And Time Integrated Read Out Chip) is a complete read-out chip manufactured in AustriaMicroSystem (AMS) SiGe 0.35 μm technology, designed to read arrays of 16 photomultipliers (PMTs). It is an upgraded version of PARISROC2 [1] designed in 2010 in the context of the PMm2 (square meter PhotoMultiplier) project [2]. CATIROC is a SoC (System on Chip) that processes analog signals up to the digitization and sparsification to reduce the cost and cable number. The ASIC is composed of 16 independent channels that work in triggerless mode, auto-triggering on the single photo-electron. It provides a charge measurement up to 400 photoelectrons (70 pC) on two scales of 10 bits and a timing information with an accuracy of 200 ps rms. The ASIC was sent for fabrication in February 2015 and then received in September 2015. It is a good candidate for two Chinese projects (LHAASO and JUNO). The architecture and the measurements will be detailed in the paper.

Abstract

To calibrate the energy response of the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeter, an electronics calibration board has been designed; it delivers a signal whose shape is close to the calorimeter ionization current signal with amplitude up to 100 mA in 50 Ω with 16 bit dynamic range. The amplitude of this signal is designed to be uniform over all calorimeters channels, stable in time and with an integral linearity much better that the electronics readout. The various R&D phases and most of the difficulties met are discussed and illustrated by many measurements. The custom design circuits are described and the layout of the ATLAS calibration board presented. The procedure used to qualify the boards is explained and the performance obtained illustrated: a dynamic range up to 3 TeV in three energy scales with an integral linearity better than 0.1% in each of them, a response uniformity better than 0.2% and a stability better than 0.1%. The performance of the board is well within the ATLAS requirements. Finally, in situ measurements done on the ATLAS calorimeter are shown to validate these performances.

Abstract

A large prototype of 1.3m3 was designed and built as a demonstrator of the semi-digital hadronic calorimeter (SDHCAL) concept proposed for the future ILC experiments. The prototype is a sampling hadronic calorimeter of 48 units. Each unit is built of an active layer made of 1m2 Glass Resistive Plate Chamber(GRPC) detector placed inside a cassette whose walls are made of stainless steel. The cassette contains also the electronics used to read out the GRPC detector. The lateral granularity of the active layer is provided by the electronics pick-up pads of 1cm2 each. The cassettes are inserted into a self-supporting mechanical structure built also of stainless steel plates which, with the cassettes walls, play the role of the absorber. The prototype was designed to be very compact and important efforts were made to minimize the number of services cables to optimize the efficiency of the Particle Flow Algorithm techniques to be used in the future ILC experiments. The different components of the SDHCAL prototype were studied individually and strict criteria were applied for the final selection of these components. Basic calibration procedures were performed after the prototype assembling. The prototype is the first of a series of new-generation detectors equipped with a power-pulsing mode intended to reduce the power consumption of this highly granular detector. A dedicated acquisition system was developed to deal with the output of more than 440000 electronics channels in both trigger and triggerless modes. Abstract

Journal of Instrumentation 12(05), P05009 (2017). doi:10.1088/1748-0221/12/05/P05009, The high granularity of the CALICE Semi-Digital Hadronic CALorimeter (SDHCAL)provides the capability to reveal the track segments present in hadronic showers. These segmentsare then used as a tool to probe the behaviour of the active layers in situ, to better reconstructthe energy of these hadronic showers and also to distinguish them from electromagnetic ones. Inaddition, the comparison of these track segments in data and the simulation helps to discriminateamong the different shower models used in the simulation. To extract the track segments in theshowers recorded in the SDHCAL, a Hough Transform is used after being adapted to the presenceof the dense core of the hadronic showers and the SDHCAL active medium structure., Published by Inst. of Physics, London

Abstract

Calorimeters with a high granularity are a fundamental requirement of the Particle Flow paradigm. This paper focuses on the prototype of a hadron calorimeter with analog readout, consisting of thirty-eight scintillator layers alternating with steel absorber planes. The scintillator plates are finely segmented into tiles individually read out via Silicon Photomultipliers. The presented results are based on data collected with pion beams in the energy range from 8GeV to 100GeV. The fine segmentation of the sensitive layers and the high sampling frequency allow for an excellent reconstruction of the spatial development of hadronic showers. A comparison between data and Monte Carlo simulations is presented, concerning both the longitudinal and lateral development of hadronic showers and the global response of the calorimeter. Abstract

International audience; The SPIROC chip is a dedicated very front-end electronics to read out a prototype of the Analog Hadronic Calorimeter equipped with Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) for ILC (International Linear Collider). A first prototype of SPIROC has been fabricated in 2007 and a second version in 2010. Many test bench and test beam measurements have been performed showing a good overall behaviour. However some limitations have been encountered. Another version has been submitted in February 2012 to correct these limitations and to improve the ASIC performances. After an exhaustive description of the ASIC, the performances will be presented in this paper.

Abstract

For the future e+ e- International Linear Collider (ILC) the ASIC SPIROC (Silicon Photomultiplier Integrated Read-Out Chip) was designed to read out the Analog Hadronic Calorimeter (AHCAL) equipped with Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM). It is an evolution of the FLC_SiPM chip designed by the OMEGA group in 2005. SPIROC2 [1] was realized in AMS SiGe 0.35 μm technology [2] and developed to match the requirements of large dynamic range, low noise, low consumption, high precision and large number of read-out channels. This ASIC is a very front-end read-out chip that integrates 36 self triggered channels with variable gain to achieve charge and time measurements. The charge measurement must be performed from 1 up to 2000 photo-electrons (p.e.) corresponding to 160 fC up to 320 pC for SiPM gain 106. The time measurement is performed with a coarse 12-bit counter related to the bunch crossing clock (up to 5 MHz) and a fine time ramp based on this clock (down to 200 ns) to achieve a resolution of 1 ns. An analog memory array with a depth of 16 for each channel is used to store the time information and the charge measurement. The analog memory content (time and charge) is digitized thanks to an internal 12-bit Wilkinson ADC. The data is then stored in a 4kbytes RAM. A complex digital part is necessary to manage all these features and to transfer the data to the DAQ. SPIROC2 is the second generation of the SPIROC ASIC family designed in 2008 by the OMEGA group. A very similar version (SPIROC2c) was submitted in February 2012 to improve the noise performance and also to integrate a new TDC (Time to Digital Converter) structure. This paper describes SPIROC2 and SPIROC2c ASICs and illustrates the main characteristics thank to a series of measurements.

Abstract

on behalf of OMEGA microelectronics group; International audience; The OMEGA microelectronics group has designed a new generation of multichannel integrated circuits, the "ROC" family, in AMS (AustrianMicroSystem) SiGe 0.35 µm technology to read out signals from various families of photodetectors. The chip named MAROC (standing for Multi Anode ReadOut Chip) has been designed to read out Multi Anode Photomultipliers (MAPMT), PARISROC (standing for Photomultiplier ARray In SiGe ReadOut Chip) to read out Photomultipliers (PMTs) and SPIROC (standing for SiPM Integrated ReadOut Chip) to readout Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM) detectors and which was the first ASIC to do so. The three of them fulfil the stringent requirements of the future photodetectors, in particular in terms of low noise, radiation hardness, large dynamic range, high density and high speed while keeping low power thanks to the SiGe technology. These multi channel ASICs are real System on Chip (SoC) as they provide charge, time and photon-counting information which are digitized internally. Their complexity and versatility enable innovative frontier detectors and also cover spin off of these detectors in adjacent fields such as medical or material imaging as well as smart detectors. In this presentation, the three ASIC architectures and test results will be described to give a general panorama of the "ROC" chips.

Abstract

A prototype module for an International Linear Collider (ILC) detector was built, installed, and tested between 2006 and 2009 at CERN and Fermilab as part of the CALICE test beam program, in order to study the possibilities of extending energy sampling behind a hadronic calorimeter and to study the possibilities of providing muon tracking. The "tail catcher/muon tracker" (TCMT) is composed of 320 extruded scintillator strips (dimensions 1000 mm x 50 mm x 5 mm) packaged in 16 one-meter square planes interleaved between steel plates. The scintillator strips were read out with wavelength shifting fibers and silicon photomultipliers. The planes were arranged with alternating horizontal and vertical strip orientations. Data were collected for muons and pions in the energy range 6 GeV to 80 GeV. Utilizing data taken in 2006, this paper describes the design and construction of the TCMT, performance characteristics, and a beam-based evaluation of the ability of the TCMT to improve hadronic energy resolution in a prototype ILC detector. For a typical configuration of an ILC detector with a coil situated outside a calorimeter system with a thickness of 5.5 nuclear interaction lengths, a TCMT would improve relative energy resolution by 6-16 % for pions between 20 and 80 GeV., 23 pages, 18 figures, 4 tables, submitted to JINST

Warm preamplifiers connected to a detector through 8 m cables have been evaluated in the frame of the RD3 accordion LAr calorimeter. The noise performance on workbench and on testbeam are presented and discussed. For fast calorimetry and for a particular range of detector capacitance, the warm preamplifiers are competitive with cold ones.

Abstract

An important technological step towards the realization of an ultra-granular hadronic calorimeter to be used in the future International Linear Collider (ILC) experiments has been made. A 33X50 cm2 GRPC detector equipped with a power-pulsed electronics board offering a 1cm2 lateral segmentation was successfully tested in a 3-Tesla magnet operating at the H2 beam line of the CERN SPS. An important reduction of power consumption with no deterioration of the detector performance is obtained when the power-pulsing mode is applied. This important result shows that ultra-granular calorimeters for ILC experiments are not only an attractive but also a realistic option., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

International audience; PARISROC (Photomultiplier ARray Integrated in SiGe ReadOut Chip) is a complete readout chip in AustriaMicroSystems (AMS) SiGe 0.35 μm technology designed to read array of 16 Photomultipliers (PMTs). The ASIC is realized in the context of the PMm2 (square meter PhotoMultiplier) project that has proposed a new system of "smart photo-detectors" composed by sensor and read-out electronics dedicated to next generation neutrino experiments. The future water Cherenkov detectors will take place in megaton size water tanks then with a large surface of photo-detection. We propose to segment the large surface in arrays with a single front-end electronics and only the useful data send in surface to be stocked and analyzed. This paper describes the second version of the ASIC and illustrates the chip principle of operation and the main characteristics thank to a series of measurements. It is a 16-channel ASIC with channels that work independently, in triggerless mode and all managed by a common digital part. Then main innovation is that all the channels are handled independently by the digital part so that only channels that have triggered are digitized. Then the data are transferred to the internal memory and sent out in a data driven way. The ASIC allows charge and time measurement. We measured a charge measurement range starting from 160 fC (1 photoelectron-p.e., at PMT gain of 106) to 100 pC (around 600 p.e.) at 1% of linearity; time tagging at 1 ns thanks to a 24-bit counter at 10 MHz and a Time to Digital Converter (TDC) on a 100 ns ramp.

Abstract

Application Specific Integrated Circuits, ASICs, similar to those envisaged for the readout electronics of the central calorimeters of detectors for a future lepton collider have been exposed to high-energy electromagnetic showers. A salient feature of these calorimeters is that the readout electronics will be embedded into the calorimeter layers. In this article it is shown that interactions of shower particles in the volume of the readout electronics do not alter the noise pattern of the ASICs. No signal at or above the MIP level has been observed during the exposure. The upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the frequency of fake signals is smaller than 1 × 10 − 5 for a noise threshold of about 60% of a MIP. For ASICs with similar design to those which were tested, it can thus be largely excluded that the embedding of the electronics into the calorimeter layers compromises the performance of the calorimeters.

Abstract

The CALICE collaboration is studying the design of high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters for future International Linear Collider detectors. For the hadronic calorimeter, one option is a highly granular sampling calorimeter with steel as absorber and scintillator layers as active material. High granularity is obtained by segmenting the scintillator into small tiles individually read out via silicon photo-multipliers (SiPM). A prototype has been built, consisting of thirty-eight sensitive layers, segmented into about eight thousand channels. In 2007 the prototype was exposed to positrons and hadrons using the CERN SPS beam, covering a wide range of beam energies and incidence angles. The challenge of cell equalization and calibration of such a large number of channels is best validated using electromagnetic processes. The response of the prototype steel-scintillator calorimeter, including linearity and uniformity, to electrons is investigated and described.

Abstract

International audience; HARDROC (HAdronic Rpc Detector Read Out Chip) is the very front end chip designed for the readout of the RPC or Micromegas foreseen for the Digital HAdronic CALorimeter (DHCAL) of the future International Linear Collider and designed within the CALICE collaboration. The very fine granularity of the ILC hadronic calorimeters (1cm2 pads) implies a huge number of electronics channels (4 105 /m3) which is a new feature of "imaging" calorimetry. Moreover, for compactness, the chips must be embedded inside the detector making crucial the reduction of the power consumption to 10 μWatt per channel. This is achieved using power pulsing, made possible by the ILC bunch pattern (1 ms of acquisition data for 199 ms of dead time). HARDROC readout is a semi-digital readout with three thresholds which allows both good tracking and coarse energy measurement, and also integrates on chip data storage. The overall performance of HARDROC will be described with detailed measurements of all the characteristics. Hundreds of chips have indeed been produced and tested before being mounted on printed boards developed for the readout of large scale (1m2) RPC and Micromegas prototypes. These prototypes have been tested with cosmics and also in testbeam at CERN between 2008 and 2010 to evaluate the performance of different kinds of GRPCs and to validate the semi-digital electronics readout system in beam conditions. A production of 10 000 chips has been launched in March 2010 to equip 40 GRPC planes (400 000 channels) of a 1 cubic meter detector that will be tested in 2011.

A prototype silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter for an ILC detector was tested in 2007 at the CERN SPS test beam. Data were collected with electron and hadron beams in the energy range 8 to 80 GeV. The analysis described here focuses on the interactions of pions in the calorimeter. One of the main objectives of the CALICE program is to validate the Monte Carlo tools available for the design of a full-sized detector. Abstract

An analog hadron calorimeter (AHCAL) prototype of 5.3 nuclear interaction lengths thickness has been constructed by members of the CALICE Collaboration. The AHCAL prototype consists of a 38-layer sandwich structure of steel plates and highly-segmented scintillator tiles that are read out by wavelength-shifting fibers coupled to SiPMs. The signal is amplified and shaped with a custom-designed ASIC. A calibration/monitoring system based on LED light was developed to monitor the SiPM gain and to measure the full SiPM response curve in order to correct for non-linearity. Ultimately, the physics goals are the study of hadron shower shapes and testing the concept of particle flow. The technical goal consists of measuring the performance and reliability of 7608 SiPMs. The AHCAL was commissioned in test beams at DESY and CERN. The entire prototype was completed in 2007 and recorded hadron showers, electron showers and muons at different energies and incident angles in test beams at CERN and Fermilab., Comment: 36 pages, 32 figures

A new design of highly granular hadronic calorimeter using Glass Resistive Plate Chambers (GRPCs) with embedded electronics has been proposed for the future International Linear Collider (ILC) experiments. It features a 2-bit threshold semi-digital read-out. Several GRPC prototypes with their electronics have been successfully built and tested in pion beams. Abstract

A prototype Silicon-Tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) for an International Linear Collider (ILC) detector was installed and tested during summer and autumn 2006 at CERN. The detector had 6480 silicon pads of dimension 1x1 cm^2. Data were collected with electron beams in the energy range 6 to 45 GeV. The analysis described in this paper focuses on electromagnetic shower reconstruction and characterises the ECAL response to electrons in terms of energy resolution and linearity. The detector is linear to within approximately the 1% level and has a relative energy resolution of (16.6 +- 0.1)/ \sqrt{E(GeV}) + 1.1 +- 0.1 (%). The spatial uniformity and the time stability of the ECAL are also addressed., 21 pages, 17 figs

The electronics for amplifying, shaping, sampling, pipelining, and digitizing the calorimeter signals is implemented on a set of front-end electronic boards. The front-end boards are installed in crates mounted between the calorimeters, where they will be subjected to significant levels of radiation during LHC operation. As a result, all components used on the front-end boards had to be subjected to an extensive set of radiation qualification tests. This paper describes radiation-tolerant designs, radiation testing, and radiation qualification of the front-end readout sy stem for the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeters.

Abstract

International audience; HARDROC is a complete readout chip in SiGe 0.35 mum of the RPCs or GEMs foreseen for a digital hadronic calorimeter (DHCAL) at the ILC. The ASIC integrates 64 channels of (1) Fast low impedance current preamplifier with 6 bits variable gain (tunable between 0 and 4) (2) Variable shaper (75-150 ns) and track and hold to provide a multiplexed analog charge output up to 10 pC. (3) Variable gain fast shaper (15 ns) followed by two low offset discriminators to autotrig down to 10 fC. The thresholds are loaded by two internal 10 bit-DACs. (4) A 128 deep digital memory to store the 2*64 discriminator outputs and bunch crossing identification coded over 24 bits counter. The design and measured performance of the chip will be presented.

Abstract

In the years between 2000 and 2002 several pre-series and series modules of the ATLAS EM barrel and end-cap calorimeter were exposed to electron, photon and pion beams. The performance of the calorimeter with respect to its finely segmented first sampling has been studied. The polar angle resolution has been found to be in the range 50-60 mrad/sqrt(E (GeV)). The neutral pion rejection has been measured to be about 3.5 for 90% photon selection efficiency at pT=50 GeV/c. Electron-pion separation studies have indicated that a pion fake rate of (0.07-0.5)% can be achieved while maintaining 90% electron identification efficiency for energies up to 40 GeV., Comment: 32 pages, 22 figures, to be published in NIM A

Abstract

The NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator is making a measurement of the direct CP violation parameter /spl epsiv/'//spl epsiv/ by comparing the four rates of decay of K/sub S/ and K/sub L/ into 2/spl pi//sup 0/ and /spl pi//sup +//spl pi//sup -/. To reconstruct the decays into 2/spl pi//sup 0/ the information from the almost 13500 channels of a quasi-homogeneous liquid krypton electromagnetic calorimeter is used. The readout electronics of the calorimeter has been designed to provide a dynamic range from a few MeV to about 50 GeV energy deposition per cell, and to sustain a high rate of incident particles. The system is made by cold charge preamplifiers (working at 120/spl deg/K), low-noise fast shapers followed by digitizer electronics at 40 MHz sampling rate that employs a gain switching technique to expand the dynamic range, where the gain can be selected for each sample individually (i.e. every 25 ns). To reduce the amount of data collected the system contains a zero suppression circuit based on halo expansion.

The construction and performance of the barrel pre-series module 0 of the future ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter at the LHC is described. The signal reconstruction and performance of ATLAS-like electronics has been studied. The signal to noise ratio for muons has been found to be 7.11+-0.07. An energy resolution of better than 9.5% GeV^1/2/sqrt{E} (sampling term) has been obtained with electron beams of up to 245GeV. The uniformity of the response to electrons in an area of Delta_eta x Delta_phi = 1.2 x 0.075 has been measured to be better than 0.8%.

Abstract

The construction and beam test results of the ATLAS electromagnetic end-cap calorimeter pre-production module 0 are presented. The stochastic term of the energy resolution is between 10% GeV^1/2 and 12.5% GeV^1/2 over the full pseudorapidity range. Position and angular resolutions are found to be in agreement with simulation. A global constant term of 0.6% is obtained in the pseudorapidity range 2.5 < eta < 3.2 (inner wheel).

Abstract

Imaging calorimetry at the International Linear Collider requires highly granular and innovative detectors. Technological prototypes have been built and tested under the CALICE collaboration framework and FP6 EUDET, FP7 AIDA European programs. These prototypes are readout by multi-channel chips named SKIROC2, SPIROC2 and HARDROC2, designed by the IN2P3 OMEGA group in AMS SiGe 350 nm technology. In this presentation, the ASIC architectures and test results on test bench and at system level will be described as well as first results of test bench measurements performed on HARDROC3, which is the first of the ``3rd generation'' chip to be submitted and where the 64 channels are handled independently to perform zero suppress on chip.

Abstract

A new combined test of an electromagnetic liquid argon accordion calorimeter and a hadronic scintillating-tile calorimeter was carried out at the CERN SPS. These devices are prototypes of the barrel calorimeter of the future ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The energy resolution of pions in the energy range from 10 to 300 GeV at an incident angle [theta] of about 12° is well described by the expression , where E is in GeV. The response to electrons and muons was evaluated. Shower profiles, shower leakage and the angular resolution of hadronic showers were also studied.
