The radiation from laser created plasma with applied electric field is studied numerically and experimentally. We experimentally observed short terahertz radiation with frequency of 0.2 THz forward direction in air using the THz time domain spectroscopy system. The two-dimensional particle in cell simulation shows that the radiation frequency is inversely proportional to the plasma diameter and is good agreement with experimental data. We present numerical and experimental demonstrations to reduce the distortion induced by intense terahertz field in a cross-polarized terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system. A quarter-wave plate is used to increase the initial birefringence of the probe beam. With an optimized angle, the distortion can be removed effectively, while the signal-to-noise ratio of the system is also improved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Automated classification of glomerular pathological findings is potentially beneficial in establishing an efficient and objective diagnosis in renal pathology. While previous studies have verified the artificial intelligence (AI) models for the classification of global sclerosis and glomerular cell proliferation, there are several other glomerular pathological findings required for diagnosis, and the comprehensive models for the classification of these major findings have not yet been reported. Whether the cooperation between these AI models and clinicians improves diagnostic performance also remains unknown. Here, we developed AI models to classify glomerular images for major findings required for pathological diagnosis and investigated whether those models could improve the diagnostic performance of nephrologists., Methods: We used a dataset of 283 kidney biopsy cases comprising 15,888 glomerular images that were annotated by a total of 25 nephrologists. AI models to classify seven pathological findings: global sclerosis, segmental sclerosis, endocapillary proliferation, mesangial matrix accumulation, mesangial cell proliferation, crescent, and basement membrane structural changes, were constructed using deep learning by fine-tuning of InceptionV3 convolutional neural network. Subsequently, we compared the agreement to truth labels between majority decision among nephrologists with or without the AI model as a voter., Results: Our model for global sclerosis showed high performance (area under the curve: periodic acid-Schiff, 0.986; periodic acid methenamine silver, 0.983); the models for the other findings also showed performance close to those of nephrologists. By adding the AI model output to majority decision among nephrologists, out of the 14 constructed models, the results of the majority decision showed improvement in sensitivity for 10 models (four of them were statistically significant) and specificity for eight models (five significant)., Conclusion: Our study showed a proof-of-concept for the classification of multiple glomerular findings in a comprehensive method of deep learning and suggested its potential effectiveness in improving diagnostic accuracy of clinicians., (Copyright © 2020. Radially polarized intense terahertz (THz) radiation behind a thin foil irradiated by ultrahigh-contrast ultrashort relativistic laser pulse is recorded by a single-shot THz time-domain spectroscopy system. As the thickness of the target is reduced from 30 to 2 µm, the duration of the THz emission increases from 5 to over 20 ps and the radiation energy increases dramatically, reaching ∼10.5mJ per pulse, corresponding to a laser-to-THz radiation energy conversion efficiency of 1.7%. The efficient THz emission can be attributed to reflection (deceleration and acceleration) of the laser-driven hot electrons by the target-rear sheath electric field. The experimental results are consistent with that of a simple model as well as particle-in-cell simulation.

Single-shot terahertz time-domain spectroscopy is presented with directly encoded spatial resolution. A single reflective echelon and multiple semi-cylindrical lenses are used to obtain both the temporal waveform and the spatial distribution of the terahertz field. This system can be used to rapidly characterize terahertz pulses generated by high power pulsed laser systems, which themselves suffer from large pulse energy and spectrum fluctuations.

A tapered parallel plate waveguide was developed for frequency up-conversion experiments in the terahertz (THz) region by flash ionization. The element at the plasma-source-wave interaction area determines the conversion efficiency. It causes THz pulses to converge to a narrow plate separation, which is smaller than the wavelength. We report the operation of a discharge-produced argon (Ar) plasma waveguide in an alumina (Al(2)O(3)) capillary to guide a 10(16)-W/cm(2) ultrashort laser pulse for shorter wavelength light sources at high repetition rate operation. The electron density in the plasma channel was measured to be 1 × 10(18) cm(-3). Modeling with a one-dimensional magnetrohydrodynamic code was used to evaluate the degree of ionization of Ar in the preformed plasma channel. The observed spectrum of the laser pulse after propagation in the argon plasma waveguide was not modified and was well reproduced by a particle in cell simulation.

We demonstrated the production of an optical waveguide in a capillary discharge-produced plasma using a cylindrical capillary. Plasma parameters of its waveguide were characterized by use of both a Nomarski laser interferometer and a hydrogen plasma line spectrum. A space-averaged maximum temperature of 3.3 eV with electron densities of the order of 10(17) cm(-3) was observed at a discharge time of 150 ns and a maximum discharge current of 400 A. An ultrashort, intense laser pulse was guided by use of this plasma channel.

Electromagnetically induced transparency is a well-known quantum phenomena that electromagnetic wave controls the refractive index of medium. It enables us to create a passband for low-frequency electromagnetic wave in a dense plasma even if the plasma is opaque for the electromagnetic wave. This technique can be used to prove the ion acoustic wave because the ion acoustic frequency is lower than the plasma frequency. We have investigated a feasibility of electromagnetic radiation at THz region corresponding to the ion acoustic frequency from a dense plasma. We confirmed that the passband is created at about 7.5 THz corresponding to the ion acoustic frequency in the electron plasma density of 10(21) cm(-3) with a Ti:Sapphire laser with the wavelength of 800 nm and the laser intensity of 10(17) W/cm(2). The estimated radiation power is around 1 MW, which is expected to be useful for nonlinear THz science and applications.

The propagation characteristics of a high-power microwave [electromagnetic (em) wave] in a plasma waveguide are reported. The plasma waveguide is formed by expanding plasmas via the ponderomotive force of the high-power microwave and the microwave pulse remains trapped within the plasma waveguide and is guided in it. With the increase of the incident microwave power, the width of the plasma waveguide increases and the half width of the radial electric field distribution decreases. This shows that the em wave modifies the refractive index of the plasma waveguide area. For a plasma waveguide with narrower width, the microwave propagates along the plasma waveguide at the fundamental TE mode, while as the waveguide width increases the higher mode component starts appearing. Analytical treatment to the propagation of the electromagnetic wave in a dielectric waveguide having a step-index profile and the numerical calculations for the radial distribution of the electric field show fairly good agreement with the results observed in the present experiments.

Spontaneous low-frequency oscillations have been observed in the circuit of a positively biased electrode when the ambient nonuniform plasma is irradiated by a microwave pulse of short duration, which is approximately equal to the ion-plasma period. The instability with its characteristic frequency below the ion-plasma frequency is driven by an accelerated ion component interacting with the sheath of the electrode. A qualitative model of the instability is suggested.

Unmagnetized, inhomogeneous laboratory plasma irradiated by a high power (eta=E(2)(0)/4pin(e)kT(e) approximately 5.0x10(-2)) short pulsed microwave with pulse length of the order of ion-plasma period (tau(pi) less, similar 2pi/omega(pi)) is studied. Large density perturbation traveling through the underdense plasma with a velocity much greater than the ion sound speed produced by the resonant absorption of the microwave pulse has been observed. In the beginning the density perturbation has large amplitude (deltan/n(0) approximately 40%) and propagates with a velocity of the order of 10(6) cm/s. But later its amplitude as well as the velocity decrease rapidly, and finally the velocity arrives with twice the ion sound speed. The oscillating incident electromagnetic waves enhance highly localized electric field by the resonant absorption process and develop time-averaged force field which pushes plasma electrons from the resonant layer. As the electrons are accelerated to be ejected, they pull plasma ions as a bunch with them by means of self-consistent Coulomb force. This suprathermal ion bunch can excite an ion-wave wakefield.

Using a gas-jet flow, via the interaction between an ultrashort high-intensity laser pulse and plasma in the presence of a perpendicular external dc magnetic field, the short pulse radiation from a magnetized plasma wakefield has been observed. Different nozzles are used in order to generate different densities and gas profiles. The neutral density of the gas-jet flow measured with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is found to be proportional to back pressure of the gas jet in the range of 1 to 8 atm. Strength of the applied dc magnetic field varies from 0 to 8 kG at the interaction region. The frequency of the emitted radiation with the pulse width of 200 ps (detection limit) is in the millimeter wave range. Polarization and spatial distributions of the experimental data are measured to be in good agreement with the theory based on the V(p)xB radiation scheme, where V(p) is the phase velocity of the electron plasma wave and B is the steady magnetic field intensity. Characteristics of the radiation are extensively studied as a function of plasma density and magnetic field strength. These experiments should contribute to the development of a new kind of millimeter wavelength radiation source that is tunable in frequency, pulse duration, and intensity.

A proof-of-principle experiment demonstrates the generation of radiation from the Cherenkov wake excited by an ultrashort- and ultrahigh-power pulse laser in a perpendicularly magnetized plasma. The frequency of the radiation is in the millimeter range (up to 200 GHz). The intensity of the radiation is proportional to the magnetic field intensity as expected by theory. Polarization of the emitted radiation is also detected. The difference in the frequency of the emitted radiation between these experiments and previous theory can be explained by the electrons' oscillation in the electric field of a narrow column of ions in the focal region.

The theory of the interaction of an electromagnetic wave with a uniformly moving ionization front in a gas is extended to include the case when the front suddenly stops. This nonstationary character of the wave/front interaction, which is typical for experiments carried out in a finite-size gas tube, gives rise to fresh physical effects. First, currents induced near the plasma boundary after the front stops produce a static magnetic field not only in the plasma behind the front but also in the vacuum ahead of the front. Second, in the regime where the transmitted wave falls off behind the front, the skinning field leaks through the stopped front and produces a burst of highly frequency up-shifted radiation.

The guided laser pulse propagation and wake-field generation are studied in a wide (in comparison with the laser spot size) gas-filled capillary with an on-axis gas density depletion, which can be produced by a rapid spin of the capillary around its axis or by radially propagating shock waves generated in a piezoceramic tube. A single equation for the wake-field potential, which describes the fully relativistic plasma response in the presence of optical field ionization (OFI) of a gas, is derived and used to demonstrate a guided propagation of a short intense laser pulse over many Rayleigh lengths in a leaky plasma channel produced by the pulse due to OFI in the capillary filled with a radially inhomogeneous gas. The efficient generation of a regular wake field over long distances suitable for the laser wake-field accelerators is shown.

A short and frequency upshifted from a source microwave pulse is experimentally generated by the overdense plasma that is rapidly created by a laser. The source wave, whose frequency is 9 GHz, is propagating in the waveguide filled with tetrakis-dimethyl-amino-ethylene gas, which is to be converted to the overdense plasma by the laser. The detected frequency of the pulse is over 31.4 GHz and its duration is 10 ns. This technique has the potential for the generation of a tunable frequency source.

The second-harmonic emission generated by the spatially asymmetric quivering electrons caused by the ponderomotive force was studied. The intensity of the second harmonic was proportional to the focused intensity of the pump pulse with the power of 1.8. This intensity dependence can be explained by the relativistic effect of the quivering electrons.

The interaction of high power microwave with collisionless unmagnetized plasma is studied. Investigation on the generation of superthermal electrons near the critical layer, by the resonance absorption phenomenon, is extended to very high microwave power levels (eta=E(2)(0)/4 pi n(e)kT(e) approximately 0.3). Here E0, n(e), and T(e) are the vacuum electric field, electron density, and electron temperature, respectively. Successive generation of electron bunches having maximum energy of about 2 keV, due to nonlinear wave breaking, is observed. The electron energy epsilon scales as a function of the incident microwave power P, according to epsilon proportional to P0.5 up to 250 kW. The two-dimensional spatial distribution of high energy electrons reveals that they are generated near the critical layer. However, the lower energy component is again produced in the subcritical density region indicating the possibility of other electron heating mechanisms.

A frequency upshift of a short microwave pulse is generated by the interaction between a relativistic underdense ionization front and a periodic electrostatic field with a perpendicular dc magnetic field. When the dc magnetic field is applied, further frequency upshift of 3 GHz is observed with respect to an unmagnetized case which has typically a GHz range. The radiation frequency depends on both the plasma density and the strength of the dc magnetic field, i.e., the plasma frequency and the cyclotron frequency. The frequency of the emitted radiation is in reasonable agreement with the theoretical values.

The asymmetric spatial distribution of electron density perturbation is observed by using a frequency-domain interferometry technique. The wake amplitude of the outside bump is enhanced by the elliptical distribution of the pump laser pulse. This asymmetry can be explained with a two-dimensional analytical model expanded from cylindrically symmetric linear theory.
