Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is abundant on Earth, is a major component of marine biominerals and thus of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and it plays a major role in the global carbon cycle by storing atmospheric CO2 into solid biominerals. Six crystalline polymorphs of CaCO3 are known-3 anhydrous: calcite, aragonite, vaterite, and 3 hydrated: ikaite (CaCO3·6H2O), monohydrocalcite (CaCO3·1H2O, MHC), and calcium carbonate hemihydrate (CaCO3·½H2O, CCHH). CCHH was recently discovered and characterized, but exclusively as a synthetic material, not as a naturally occurring mineral. Here, analyzing 200 million spectra with Myriad Mapping (MM) of nanoscale mineral phases, we find CCHH and MHC, along with amorphous precursors, on freshly deposited coral skeleton and nacre surfaces, but not on sea urchin spines. Thus, biomineralization pathways are more complex and diverse than previously understood, opening new questions on isotopes and climate. Crystalline precursors are more accessible than amorphous ones to other spectroscopies and diffraction, in natural and bio-inspired materials.

Highlights Biomimetic polymer composites with micro/nano‐scale brick‐and‐mortar structures show promise for advancing nacre‐like polymer bioinspired nanocomposites. This study used a solvothermal method to graft MIL‐101 onto graphene oxide (GO), forming GO‐g‐MIL‐101. Subsequent heat treatments at 700 and 900°C under inert gas produced magnetic graphene nanosheets (GNS@Fe) with iron oxide particles. Poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) served as the matrix. PTT/GNS@Fe powders were prepared by coagulation then formed into bioinspired PTT/GNS@Fe and PTT/GNS@Fe‐m composites via solvent casting and hot pressing, yielding brick‐and‐mortar structures with and without magnetic alignment. PTT served as the soft phase and GNS@Fe as the hard phase. Rheological and conductivity analysis of PTT bioinspired composites, based on percolation theory, revealed microstructural changes. Results show that magnetic field assistance enhances GNS@Fe alignment in PTT/GNS@Fe‐m composites. With higher GNS@Fe content, reduced interlayer spacing creates a PTT‐GNS@Fe network, where nanoscale confinement limits PTT chain mobility, impacting crystallization. Low GNS@Fe levels promote crystallization, while high levels hinder it, with PTT unable to crystallize in nacre‐like composites above 40 wt% GNS@Fe. Additionally, we tested the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding of the PTT/GNS@Fe bioinspired composite system, finding that the shielding efficiency of PTT/GNS@Fe‐m with 40 wt% filler, though affected in magnetism by processing, approaches commercial application levels. Rheological and conductivity analysis via percolation theory. Percolation analysis revealed microstructures in the nacre‐like composite. Magnetic self‐assembly in PTT/GNS@Fe‐m led to more oriented structures. Higher GNS@Fe content reduced spacing, forming PTT‐GNS@Fe networks. The evolution of natural armor materials has led to gradient structures with specific architectures to achieve high damage tolerance, thus offering valuable inspiration for the design of man‐made materials. Here, bioinspired gradient composites with a nacre‐like brick‐and‐mortar architecture are fabricated by infiltrating a polymer phase into porous ceramic scaffolds with position‐specific ceramic content. These composites demonstrate an integrated structure with notable several‐fold variations in local hardness and modulus across the thickness. The asymmetric mechanical properties and toughening mechanisms of the composites are investigated and compared to those of uniform composites. Specifically, when loaded along the direction of decreasing stiffness – resembling the typical loading configuration of natural armors, the gradient composites exhibit superior damage tolerance compared to the opposite direction and a uniform composite with equivalent ceramic content. This is attributed to the decreased peak stress, broader stress distribution, and increased deformation capacity, along with enhanced toughening effects that impede crack growth through mechanisms of crack deflection, crack bridging by uncracked ligaments, together with their frictional pull‐out from crack surfaces. Nacre has excellent balanced strength and toughness. In this paper, the mechanical performance of the typical "brick-and-mortar" structure, including the stress–strain and strain at the interface as well as the stress in the bricks, was calculated by a simplified analytical model of the nacre. This paper proposes a new method to control the crack deflection based on the toughening mechanism of the nacre. The crack extension of the "brick-and-mortar" structure was simulated using cohesive elements based on the traction–separation law with elastic and softening stiffness as variables, and it was found that both stiffness could effectively control the crack extension. The strength and toughness of the models with different stiffness combinations were calculated and plotted as a function of elastic stiffness and softening stiffness, showing that elastic stiffness significantly affects strength and softening stiffness is a determinant of toughness. Bioinspiration offers alternative solutions to overcome the inherent drawbacks of glass, such as low fracture toughness, strength, and impact resistance. Synthetic composites inspired by natural materials, such as nacre, have been recently introduced as an alternative to glasses. However, these have all suffered from trade‐offs between rigidity, optical clarity, fabrication scalability, and complexity. Here, two wave‐based fabrication techniques are presented to create a nacreous structure from glass flakes and polymethyl methacrylate. The glass's surface energy is controlled by adjusting the silane coverage on the glass surface, enabling high levels of structural compactness, mechanical properties, and optical clarity. The scalable glass composite, with a ≈60% glass volume fraction, possesses strength, fracture toughness, and impact resistance values, outperforming annealed glass by 4300%, 350%, and 400%, respectively. It also has a haze level of ≈18%, almost 60% less than that of the similar centrifuged‐based glass composite. This composite is proposed as a potential glass alternative in diverse applications. Biominerals are organic-mineral composites formed by living organisms. They are the hardest and toughest tissues in those organisms, are often polycrystalline, and their mesostructure (which includes nano- and microscale crystallite size, shape, arrangement, and orientation) can vary dramatically. Marine biominerals may be aragonite, vaterite, or calcite, all calcium carbonate (CaCO3 ) polymorphs, differing in crystal structure. Unexpectedly, diverse CaCO3 biominerals such as coral skeletons and nacre share a similar characteristic: Adjacent crystals are slightly misoriented. This observation is documented quantitatively at the micro- and nanoscales, using polarization-dependent imaging contrast mapping (PIC mapping), and the slight misorientations are consistently between 1° and 40°. Nanoindentation shows that both polycrystalline biominerals and abiotic synthetic spherulites are tougher than single-crystalline geologic aragonite. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of bicrystals at the molecular scale reveal that aragonite, vaterite, and calcite exhibit toughness maxima when the bicrystals are misoriented by 10°, 20°, and 30°, respectively, demonstrating that slight misorientation alone can increase fracture toughness. Slight-misorientation-toughening can be harnessed for synthesis of bioinspired materials that only require one material, are not limited to specific top-down architecture, and are easily achieved by self-assembly of organic molecules (e.g., aspirin, chocolate), polymers, metals, and ceramics well beyond biominerals.

The objective of this study is to design a biomimetic hybrid structure inspired by nacre, and conch shells and compare how the compressive characteristics change when key geometric design parameters are varied. Nacre, also known as mother of pearl, has a host of traits, suitable for survival, like its stiffness and strength. Conch, which is a common name for a number of sea snails, possesses a unique cross-lamellar structure which has a tough outer layer to resist penetration from the sharp-toothed attacks of predators, and a nacreous inner layer which can dissipate energy. A novel nacre–conch–nacre inspired sandwich core structure is designed and fabricated with fuse filament fabrication using acrylonitrile styrene acrylate filament according to the ASTM C365 standard for the flatwise compression test of sandwich core structures. Three key design parameters, namely the wall thickness, the thickness between two nacre walls, and the angle of conch were selected and varied to form nine different iterations of this design. An Abaqus finite element analysis was validated by experimental testing using an Instron 8801 servo-hydraulic universal testing machine. The results showed that conch-inspired structures' compression properties depend on wall thickness and angle. The sample with 2 mm wall thickness and 45° conch angle had the highest compressive strength of 3.62 MPa, while the sample with 1 mm wall thickness and 50° conch angle had the lowest at 2.09 MPa. Many organisms incorporate inorganic solids into their tissues to improve functional and mechanical properties. The resulting mineralized tissues are called biominerals. Several studies have shown that nacreous biominerals induce osteoblastic extracellular mineralization. Among them, Pinctada margaritifera is well known for the ability of its organic matrix to stimulate bone cells. In this context, we aimed to study the effects of shell extracts from three other Pinctada species (Pinctada radiata, Pinctada maxima, and Pinctada fucata) on osteoblastic extracellular matrix mineralization, by using an in vitro model of mouse osteoblastic precursor cells (MC3T3-E1). For a better understanding of the Pinctada-bone mineralization relationship, we evaluated the effects of 4 other nacreous mollusks that are phylogenetically distant and distinct from the Pinctada genus. In addition, we tested 12 non-nacreous mollusks and one extra-group. Biomineral shell powders were prepared, and their organic matrix was partially extracted using ethanol. Firstly, the effect of these powders and extracts was assessed on the viability of MC3T3-E1. Our results indicated that neither the powder nor the ethanol-soluble matrix (ESM) affected cell viability at low concentrations. Then, we evaluated osteoblastic mineralization using Alizarin Red staining and we found a prominent MC3T3-E1 mineralization mainly induced by nacreous biominerals, especially those belonging to the Pinctada genus. However, few non-nacreous biominerals were also able to stimulate the extracellular mineralization. Overall, our findings validate the remarkable ability of CaCO3 biomineral extracts to promote bone mineralization. This review focus on the current advances of freezing-derived functional materials, involving the design rationale (freezing stratagems and curing methods) of material fabrication and various applications, including mechanical, thermal, energy, environmental, and biomedical applications. The emphasis is put on the correlations among multiscale structures, extraordinary properties and multifarious applications. Promising research directions and challenges about the freezing processing tools are also presented. [Display omitted] Ice-templating, also known as freeze-casting, has emerged as a novel and versatile processing technology in various applications such as strong and tough structured materials, thermal management, energy storage and conversion, biomedical engineering, and so on. By replicating the fractal ice crystal structure, both multiscale hierarchical architectures (from macroscale to micrometer-, and nanometer-scales) and corresponding unique structure-derived functions can be achieved. This review focus on the current advances of freezing-derived functional materials, involving the design rationale (freezing strategies and curing methods) of material fabrication and various applications, including mechanical, thermal, energy, environmental, and biomedical applications. The freshwater pearl mussel, Lamellidens marginalis, is widely distributed in India and is cultured for freshwater pearl production. Understanding the biomineralisation process sheds light on the genes responsible for nacre secretion. However, information on the transcriptome of L. marginalis mantle tissue and pearl sac is lacking. This study generated transcriptome resources for L. marginalis, identifying genes involved in biomineralisation. Illumina paired-end sequencing yielded 11.13 million raw reads, assembled into 133,246 contigs and 26,373 unigenes. Of these, 21,033 unigenes exhibited homology with previously reported molluscan proteins. Genes related to biomineralisation, such as pif, perlucin, calreticulin, calmodulin, chitin synthase, chitin dehydrogenase, carbonic anhydrase, tyrosinase, shell matrix protein, dermatopontin isoform X1, chitinase 3, chitinase domain-containing protein 1, and putative chitinase-1were identified. This baseline information will help to compare the expression levels between the phenotypes of high-quality and low-quality pearls. Further investigations, incorporating large sample sizes and phenotype information, could assist in identifying type I genetic markers linked to pearl quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nacre of Pinctada maxima is a natural biomineralized matrix, appeared 7 million years before hominins. In this study, we converted nacre into a self-setting particle bound with multiple calcium orthophosphates that reassemble mammals’ bone mineral matrices for induction of bone regeneration. The nacre-based calcium orthophosphates composite (NCOC) exhibited a compression strength of 10 MPa, which is superior to human trabecular bone. In vitro bioactivity tests revealed the formation of apatite with nano-porous flake-like crystals on the composite surface that mimic HA structure of a human bone matrix. NCOC demonstrated efficient attachment and proliferation of osteoblast cells, promoting osteogenic differentiation by increasing expressions of RUNX2 and OPN. In vivo studies using rabbit back fascia demonstrated that NCOC displays better bone healing and biocompatibility than conventional bone substitute apatite in critical bone defect models. The degradation of calcium carbonate crystal in vivo does not compromise structural integrity of NCOC. Overall, our data showed that NCOC produced through self-setting reactions, presents advantages such as accelerated biodegradation and osteostimulative properties, making it a promising bone substitute for effective bone regeneration.

Abstract Adoration of the Magi (ca. 1695–1700), an enconchado painting attributed to Miguel González, active in Mexico in the late seventeenth century, exemplifies the refinement of the arts produced in Spanish America as a response to the taste for Asian goods during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The painting and its original mother-of-pearl inlaid frame were examined and analyzed using non-invasive and micro-sampling methods, an approach that permitted answering outstanding questions about the stratigraphy, pigments, and the use of shells throughout the painting and frame. The identification of the mother-of-pearl, determined to be from a Pinctada species, was a central focus of this study. In addition to the inlaid shells in the painting and frame, shell fragments were observed mixed with gypsum in the ground preparation of the painting by SEM–EDS. To our knowledge, this is a novel identification of marine shells in the ground of an easel painting. Traces of workmanship in the inlaid shells observed by SEM and optical microscopy are possibly connected to pre-Hispanic methodologies of mother-of-pearl refinement. Graphical Abstract

Nacre‐inspired materials with combined high strength and toughness have been widely developed and utilized for various engineering applications. However, existing preparation techniques suffer from intricate processes, high energy‐consumption, and lack of scalability, all of which collectively impede the efficient production of three‐dimensional materials. Here, a viable strategy is reported for the efficient and scalable production of bulk nacre‐mimetic materials, drawing inspiration from the intricate structures found in both nacre and wood. The prepared millimeter‐thick wooden artificial nacres (WANs) exhibit the presence of multi‐hierarchical lamellar structures, organic bridges, and micro‐asperities. Those features lead to the WANs exhibiting impressive mechanical performances, presenting excellent bending strength (≈93.31 MPa), toughness (≈7.40 MPa m1/2), tensile strength (≈122.59 MPa), and work of fracture (≈4.61 MJ m−3). In addition, owing to the low density (≈1.59 g cm−3), the WANs show much higher specific mechanical properties compared to nacre and related artificial nacre materials. Considering both its production process and exceptional properties, this material holds great promise for practical applications within the realm of engineering and structural fields. SiC/AZ31 inverse nacre structured composite was prepared by mechanical ball milling and thermal deformation, and the microstructure of the composite was effectively controlled by process control. The microstructure was characterized by X-ray diffraction（XRD）and scanning electron microscopy（SEM）, the mechanical properties of the material were tested by quasi-static tensile test, and the strengthening and toughening mechanism and failure mechanism were preliminarily analyzed by combining the microstructure. The results show that the inverse nacre structure obtained by hot deformation process can significantly improve the tensile properties. When the strain hardening ability of the matrix in the inverse nacre structured composite is improved, it can better compensate for the softening effect caused by crack propagation in the hard phase, and the strain hardening ability of the composite is improved. The tensile properties can be controlled by adjusting the size of the lamellar soft phase in the inverse nacre structured composite. When the size of lamellar soft phase is large, the composite has better toughness. When the size of lamellar soft phase is small, the composite has higher strength. The excellent strength and toughness of the inverse nacre structure composite are arising from its structural characteristics, and the continuous hard phase plays a good role in bearing, while the dispersed lamellar soft phase benefits for improving the toughness of the composite. The main strengthening mechanisms of this material include dispersion strengthening, fine grain strengthening, and heterogeneous deformation induced strengthening, and the improvement of toughness are attributed to the crack blunting and deflection induced by lamellar soft phase. In summary, the architecture design of inverse nacre structure is an effective way to obtain high-strength and tough magnesium matrix composite.

Discoveries of two-dimensional (2D) materials, exemplified by the recent entry of MXene, have ushered in a new era of multifunctional materials for applications from electronics to biomedical sensors due to their superior combination of mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties. MXene, for example, can be designed for specialized applications using a plethora of element combinations and surface termination layers, making them attractive for highly optimized multifunctional composites. Although multiple critical engineering applications demand that such composites balance specialized functions with mechanical demands, the current knowledge of the mechanical performance and optimized traits necessary for such composite design is severely limited. In response to this pressing need, this paper critically reviews structure–function connections for highly mineralized 2D natural composites, such as nacre and exoskeletal of windowpane oysters, to extract fundamental bioinspired design principles that provide pathways for multifunctional 2D-based engineered systems. This paper highlights key bioinspired design features, including controlling flake geometry, enhancing interface interlocks, and utilizing polymer interphases, to address the limitations of the current design. Challenges in processing, such as flake size control and incorporating interlocking mechanisms of tablet stitching and nanotube forest, are discussed along with alternative potential solutions, such as roughened interfaces and surface waviness. Finally, this paper discusses future perspectives and opportunities, including bridging the gap between theory and practice with multiscale modeling and machine learning design approaches. Overall, this review underscores the potential of bioinspired design for engineered 2D composites while acknowledging the complexities involved and providing valuable insights for researchers and engineers in this rapidly evolving field. Since ancient times, the shells of marine molluscs have been used as a therapeutic and/or prophylactic resource. In Spain, they were part of practical guides for doctors or pharmacists until the 19th century. In general, seashells were prepared by dissolving in vinegar and were part of plasters or powders used as toothpaste, or to treat dyspepsia, heartburn and leprosy. Thus, the nacre or mother-of-pearl of various molluscs was regularly used in the Royal Colleges of Surgery and in hospitals during the times of the Cortes of Cadiz, as a medicine in galenic preparations based on powders. In contemporary Spanish ethnomedicine, seashells, with a high symbolic value, have been used as an amulet to prevent cracks in the breasts and promote their development during lactation, to avoid teething pain in young children, to eliminate stains on the face or to cure erysipelas. But, as in other countries, products derived from seashells have also been empirically applied. The two resources used traditionally have been the cuttlebone, the internal shell of cuttlefish and the nacre obtained from the external shells of some species. Cuttlebone, dried and pulverised, has been applied externally to cure corneal leukoma and in dental hygiene. In the case of nacre, a distinction must be made between chemical and physical remedies. Certain seashells, macerated in lemon juice, were used in coastal areas to remove spots on the face during postpartum. However, the most common practice in Spain mainland was to dissolve mother-of-pearl buttons in lemon juice (or vinegar). The substance thus obtained has been used to treat different dermatological conditions of the face (chloasma, acne), as well as to eliminate freckles. For the extraction of foreign bodies in the eyes, a very widespread traditional remedy has been to introduce small mother-of-pearl buttons under the lid. These popular remedies and practices are compared with those collected in classic works of medicine throughout history, and data on the pharmacological activity and pharmaceutical applications of the products used are provided. The use of cuttlebone powders is supported by different works on anti-inflammatory, immune-modulatory and/or wound healing properties. Nacre powder has been used in traditional medicines to treat palpitations, convulsions or epilepsy. As sedation and a tranquilisation agent, nacre is an interesting source for further drug development. Likewise, nacre is a biomaterial for orthopaedic and other tissue bioengineering applications. Structural characterization of biologically formed materials is essential for understanding biological phenomena and their enviro-nment, and for generating new bio-inspired engineering concepts. For example, nacre-the inner lining of some mollusk shells-encodes local environmental conditions throughout its formation and has exceptional strength due to its nanoscale brick-and-mortar structure. This layered structure, comprising alternating transparent aragonite (CaCO3) tablets and thinner organic polymer layers, also results in stunning interference colors. Existing methods of structural characterization of nacre rely on some form of cross-sectional analysis, such as scanning or transmission electron microscopy or polarization-dependent imaging contrast (PIC) mapping. However, these techniques are destructive and too time- and resource-intensive to analyze large sample areas. Here, we present an all-optical, rapid, and nondestructive imaging technique-hyperspectral interference tomography (HIT)-to spatially map the structural parameters of nacre and other disordered layered materials. We combined hyperspectral imaging with optical-interference modeling to infer the mean tablet thickness and its disorder in nacre across entire mollusk shells from red and rainbow abalone (Haliotis rufescens and Haliotis iris) at various stages of development. We observed that in red abalone, unexpectedly, nacre tablet thickness decreases with age of the mollusk, despite roughly similar appearance of nacre at all ages and positions in the shell. Our rapid, inexpensive, and nondestructive method can be readily applied to in-field studies.

Nacre is known for its uniquely high toughness and lightweight capabilities. Its unique structure is composed of soft nacre proteins and stiff calcium carbonates, allowing it to deflect cracks that expand in straight lines to increase energy dissipation. However, nacre microstructures are challenging to mimic due to the intractable number of combinations in the design space. We thus propose a reinforcement learning (RL) framework to efficiently design a high-toughness nacre-like structure. By designing local structures at the crack tip, we incorporated reinforcement learning with finite element to optimize the structure by replacing the soft and stiff materials in the design space. Starting from the initial unit cell, where the majority of the unit cell consists of soft materials, our method gradually improves the cell by arranging stiff and soft materials on the unit cell to achieve higher toughness. The optimized designs exhibit crack-insensitive behavior and excellent crack resistance when subjected to finite element simulation and experimental testing. This design framework can be used in synthetic instruments that require rapid construction rearrangements such as biomaterials and unexposed substructures, increasing their mechanical performance.

Aging is associated with detrimental bone loss leading to fragility fractures in both men and women. Notably, a majority of bone loss with aging is cortical, as well as a large number of fractures are non-vertebral and at the non-hip sites. Nacre is a product of mollusks composed of calcium carbonate embedded in organic components. As our previous study demonstrated the protective effect of nacre supplementation on trabecular bone loss in ovariectomized rats, we sought to evaluate the effect of dietary nacre on bone loss related to aging in female mice which do not suffer true menopause as observed in women. The current study compared the effect of a 90-day long nacre-supplemented diet to that of Standard or CaCO3 diets on both bone mass and strength in 16-month-old C57BL/6 female mice. Multiple approaches were performed to assess the microarchitecture and mechanical properties of long bones, analyze trabecular histomorphometry, and measure bone cell-related gene expressions, and bone turnover markers. The shell of a freshwater mussel (Mollusca: Bivalvia) is a composite biological material that plays an active role in maintaining ecosystem services. Mussel shells have variable structures both within and between species. In this study, the structural and biological characteristics of the shells of Potomida semirugata and Leguminaia wheatleyi were investigated in order to use freshwater mussel shells as a biological material. Close observation of the microstructure of the shells of the two common freshwater bivalves revealed a variation in construction from the outer periostracum to the inner nacreous layer. In P. semirugata, a polygonal arrangement with columnar prisms of different sizes was observed more significantly. In L. wheatleyi the prismatic columns are oval and irregularly polygonal. The nacreous layers of P. semirugata, in which the individual aragonite layers are horizontally overlapped, are more uniformly distributed. The overlapping of the aragonite sheets in L. wheatleyi is more irregular. The presence of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the shells was confirmed by the identification of the characteristic carbonate bands at 701.9, 713.5, and 865.8 cm-1. This information was used to classify and distinguish the different layers of the shells, allowing interspecific comparisons and variations in the different layers. The results clearly showed that shell samples were highly biocompatible and nontoxic compared to the control group. This finding suggests that these materials have promising potential for use in various biomedical applications where biocompatibility is a critical factor. The results indicated that the shells of the freshwater bivalves P. semirugata and L. wheatleyi are biological materials with potential multiple applications for human well-being and environmental quality. Measurements of trace element chemistry, mineralogy, and isotope geochemistry are rarely combined with known environmental data to provide a more complete story about how environmental conditions are recorded in biomineral carbonates. Here, cultured (farmed) pearls serve as relatively pristine time capsules to study these geochemical and mineral-based proxies. Cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging and Raman spectroscopic mapping on the µm-scale reveals that heterogeneous crystal bonding environments, geochemistry, and organic contents across the growth history of a freshwater pearl reflect environmental shifts in Kentucky Lake, TN, USA. A major CL peak at 551 nm aligns with increased manganese and organic contents and correlates with lake conductivity and alkalinity data. These CL features are temporally offset from previous 10-µm-scale aragonite nacre oxygen isotope measurements (δ18O Arg) that record periods of minimum lake temperatures in winter seasons. Thus, we suggest that these trace element and organic features represent autumn or spring rainy seasons that experience lake turnover events and more land runoff rich in Mn and nutrients, increasing aragonite-bound Mn and organic contents in the nacre. This 551 nm signal is absent in Mn-poor saltwater pearl nacre. A second CL peak at 444 nm shows different heterogeneous features likely due to crystal structure shifts, as evidenced by correlations to a Raman map of translational (T): librational (L) mode height ratios typically signaling changes in nacre tablet orientation. Thus, we show that µm-scale CL and Raman mapping may serve as complementary environmental proxies to novel SIMS-based δ18O Arg temperature proxies in order to capture additional information about local lake environments at seasonal to sub-seasonal temporal resolutions. One of the most ambitious goals for bone implants is to improve bioactivity, incapability, and mechanical properties; to reduce the need for further surgery; and increase efficiency. Hydroxyapatite (HA), the main inorganic component of bones and teeth, has high biocompatibility but is weak and brittle material. Cortical bone is composed of 70% calcium phosphate (CaP) and 30% collagen and forms a complex hierarchical structure with anisotropic and lamellar microstructure (osteons) which makes bone a light, strong, tough, and durable material that can support large loads. However, imitation of concentric lamellar structure of osteons is difficult to achieve in fabrication. Nacre from mollusk shells with layered structures has now become the archetype of the natural "model" for bio-inspired materials. Incorporating a nacre-like layered structure into bone implants can enhance their mechanical strength, toughness, and durability, reducing the risk of implant catastrophic failure or fracture. The layered structure of nacre-like HA/polymer composites possess high strength, toughness, and tunable stiffness which matches that of bone. The nacre-like HA/polymer composites should also possess excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity which facilitate the bonding of the implant with the surrounding bone, leading to improved implant stability and long-term success. To achieve this, a bi-directional freeze-casting technique was used to produce elongated lamellar HA were further densified and infiltrated with polymer to produce nacre-like HA/polymer composites with high strength and fracture toughness. Mechanical characterization shows that increasing the ceramic fractions in the composite increases the density of the mineral bridges, resulting in higher flexural and compressive strength. The nacre-like HA/(methyl methacrylate (MMA) + 5 wt.% acrylic acid (AA)) composites with a ceramic fraction of 80 vol.% showed a flexural strength of 158 ± 7.02 MPa and a Young's modulus of 24 ± 4.34 GPa, compared with 130 ± 5.82 MPa and 19.75 ± 2.38 GPa, in the composite of HA/PMMA, due to the higher strength of the polymer and the interface of the composite. The fracture toughness in the composition of 5 wt.% PAA to PMMA improves from 3.023 ± 0.98 MPa·m1/2 to 5.27 ± 1.033 MPa·m1/2 by increasing the ceramic fraction from 70 vol.% to 80 vol.%, respectively. Osteoporosis is a systemic bone disease characterized by low bone mass and micro- architectural change of bone tissue, leading to an increased bone fragility which can lead to secondary fractures. It has become one of the major factors affecting the quality of life in recent years, especially for the elderly. Currently, treatment drugs have problems with their efficacy and long-term use. Nacre contains osteogenic active substances, which has the potential to be used in osteoporosis and other bone diseases. Biological structures possess excellent damage tolerance, which makes them attractive for ballistic protection applications. This paper develops a finite element modelling framework to investigate the performance of several biological structures that are most relevant for ballistic protection, including nacre, conch, fish scales, and crustacean exoskeleton. Finite element simulations were conducted to determine the geometric parameters of the bio-inspired structures that can survive projectile impact. The performances of the bio-inspired panels were benchmarked against a monolithic panel with the same 4.5 mm overall thickness and projectile impact condition. It was found that the biomimetic panels that were considered possessed better multi-hit resistant capabilities compared to the selected monolithic panel. Certain configurations arrested a fragment simulating projectile with an initial impact velocity of 500 m/s, which was similar to the performance of the monolithic panel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression via the recognition of their target messenger RNAs. MiR-10a-3p plays an important role in the process of ossification. In this study, we obtained the precursor sequence of miR-10a-3p in the pearl oyster Pinctada fucata martensii (Pm-miR-10a-3p) and verified its sequence by miR-RACE technology, and detected its expression level in the mantle tissues of the pearl oyster P. f. martensii. Pm-nAChRsα and Pm-NPY were identified as the potential target genes of Pm-miR-10a-3p. After the over-expression of Pm-miR-10a-3p, the target genes Pm-nAChRsα and Pm-NPY were downregulated, and the nacre microstructure became disordered. The Pm-miR-10a-3p mimic obviously inhibited the luciferase activity of the 3′ untranslated region of the Pm-NPY gene. When the interaction site was mutated, the inhibitory effect disappeared. Our results suggested that Pm-miR-10a-3p participates in nacre formation in P. f. martensii by targeting Pm-NPY. In abalone nacre, growth bands occur periodically with the change of living environments. To explore the specific role of growth bands playing in the mechanical properties of nacre, the compressive and three-point bending behaviors of composites with growth bands in green abalone shell and pure nacre without growth bands in whitened ear abalone shell were comparatively investigated. It is found that the mechanical effects of growth bands under different stress states are significantly distinct, mainly attributing to the different responses of organic matrix interlayer in growth bands. Specifically, due to the remarkable ductility of thicker organic matrix interlayer under the action of compressive stress, the growth bands could be bent without fracturing in the region of kink band. However, the existence of growth bands leads to a lower interfacial strength, finally causing the fact that the composites with growth bands exhibit a lower strength but a higher toughness than pure nacre under uniaxial compression tests. Contrastively, both the strength and toughness of the composites are lower than those of pure nacre under three-point bending tests, since micro-cracks will be first initiated in growth bands on account of the weaker organic matrix interlayer under tensile stress. Therefore, the growth bands actually play different roles in the mechanical performances of nacre under compressive and tensile stresses.

Due to their extraordinary prospective uses, particularly in the areas of oil–water separation, underwater superoleophobic materials have gained increasing attention. Thus, artificial nacre has become an attractive candidate for oil–water separation due to its superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity properties. Synthesized artificial nacre has successfully achieved a high mechanical strength that is close to or even surpasses the mechanical strength of natural nacre. This can be attributed to suitable synthesis methods, the selection of inorganic fillers and polymer matrices, and the enhancement of the mechanical properties through cross-linking, covalent group modification, or mineralization. The utilization of nacre-inspired composite membranes for emerging applications, i.e., is oily wastewater treatment, is highlighted in this review. The membranes show that full separation of oil and water can be achieved, which enables their applications in seawater environments. Flexible substrates, essential for flexible electronics by providing support and flexibility while influencing sensor stability, still face challenges in achieving mechanical and thermal stability, particularly in large-scale production and cost control. Inspired by the nacre's "brick-and-mortar" hierarchical microstructure, this study introduces PPSN (paper/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/Si₃N₄ nanoparticles), a novel flexible substrate that mimics the "brick-and-mortar" structure. PPSN, with its topological interlocking and assembly technique, provides excellent thermal and mechanical stability, including high-temperature resistance and stress dissipation. An optimized Si₃N₄ content of 1.0 wt% yields a peak elastic modulus of 1245.27 MPa while maintaining hydrophobicity, with a contact angle of 127.1° at 3.0 wt%. The substrate shows excellent fatigue durability, retaining its morphology after 10,000 bending cycles. Thermal analysis indicates a stable CTE below 20 ppm/°C up to 300°C, rising to 200 ppm/°C between 350 and 400°C. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) reveal minimal thermal decomposition with mass loss below 0.5 % from 25 to 300°C and under 3 % at 400°C. Additionally, electrodes were printed on the substrate using screen printing and ion beam deposition (IBD), demonstrating good material adhesion. A flexible temperature sensor was fabricated and exhibited good sensitivity and stability with a TCR of −0.262 % °C⁻¹. PPSN advances traditional materials with superior mechanical strength, thermal stability, and durability, offering significant scientific and practical value for flexible electronics and low-cost biomimetic processes. Since ancient times, the shells of marine molluscs have been used as a therapeutic and/or prophylactic resource. In Spain, they were part of practical guides for doctors or pharmacists until the 19th century. In general, seashells were prepared by dissolving in vinegar and were part of plasters or powders used as toothpaste, or to treat dyspepsia, heartburn and leprosy. Thus, the nacre or mother-of-pearl of various molluscs was regularly used in the Royal Colleges of Surgery and in hospitals during the times of the Cortes of Cadiz, as a medicine in galenic preparations based on powders. In contemporary Spanish ethnomedicine, seashells, with a high symbolic value, have been used as an amulet to prevent cracks in the breasts and promote their development during lactation, to avoid teething pain in young children, to eliminate stains on the face or to cure erysipelas. But, as in other countries, products derived from seashells have also been empirically applied. The two resources used traditionally have been the cuttlebone, the internal shell of cuttlefish and the nacre obtained from the external shells of some species. Cuttlebone, dried and pulverised, has been applied externally to cure corneal leukoma and in dental hygiene. In the case of nacre, a distinction must be made between chemical and physical remedies. Certain seashells, macerated in lemon juice, were used in coastal areas to remove spots on the face during postpartum. However, the most common practice in Spain mainland was to dissolve mother-of-pearl buttons in lemon juice (or vinegar). The substance thus obtained has been used to treat different dermatological conditions of the face (chloasma, acne), as well as to eliminate freckles. For the extraction of foreign bodies in the eyes, a very widespread traditional remedy has been to introduce small mother-of-pearl buttons under the lid. These popular remedies and practices are compared with those collected in classic works of medicine throughout history, and data on the pharmacological activity and pharmaceutical applications of the products used are provided. The use of cuttlebone powders is supported by different works on anti-inflammatory, immune-modulatory and/or wound healing properties. Nacre powder has been used in traditional medicines to treat palpitations, convulsions or epilepsy. As sedation and a tranquilisation agent, nacre is an interesting source for further drug development. Likewise, nacre is a biomaterial for orthopaedic and other tissue bioengineering applications. This article is a historical, cultural and anthropological view that can open new epistemological paths in marine-derived product research.

Discoveries of two-dimensional (2D) materials, exemplified by the recent entry of MXene, have ushered in a new era of multifunctional materials for applications from electronics to biomedical sensors due to their superior combination of mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties. MXene, for example, can be designed for specialized applications using a plethora of element combinations and surface termination layers, making them attractive for highly optimized multifunctional composites. Although multiple critical engineering applications demand that such composites balance specialized functions with mechanical demands, the current knowledge of the mechanical performance and optimized traits necessary for such composite design is severely limited. In response to this pressing need, this paper critically reviews structure–function connections for highly mineralized 2D natural composites, such as nacre and exoskeletal of windowpane oysters, to extract fundamental bioinspired design principles that provide pathways for multifunctional 2D-based engineered systems. This paper highlights key bioinspired design features, including controlling flake geometry, enhancing interface interlocks, and utilizing polymer interphases, to address the limitations of the current design. Challenges in processing, such as flake size control and incorporating interlocking mechanisms of tablet stitching and nanotube forest, are discussed along with alternative potential solutions, such as roughened interfaces and surface waviness. Finally, this paper discusses future perspectives and opportunities, including bridging the gap between theory and practice with multiscale modeling and machine learning design approaches. Overall, this review underscores the potential of bioinspired design for engineered 2D composites while acknowledging the complexities involved and providing valuable insights for researchers and engineers in this rapidly evolving field.

Organisms hold an extraordinarily evolutionary advantage in forming complex, hierarchical structures across different length scales that exhibit superior mechanical properties. Mimicking these structures for synthesizing high-performance materials has long held a fascination and has seen rapid growth in the recent past thanks to high-resolution microscopy, design, synthesis, and testing methodologies. Among the class of natural materials, nacre, found in mollusk shells, exhibits remarkably high mechanical strength and toughness. The highly organized "brick and mortar" structure at different length scales is a basis for excellent mechanical properties and the capability to dissipate energy and propagation in nacre. Here, we employ large-scale atomistic coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to study the mechanical and viscoelastic behavior of nacre-like microstructures. Uniaxial tension and oscillatory shear simulations were performed to gain insight into the role of complex structure-property relationships. Specifically, the role played by the effect of microstructure (arrangement of the crystalline domain) and polymer-crystal interactions on the mechanical and viscoelastic behavior is elucidated. The tensile property of the nanocomposite was seen to be sensitive to the microstructure, with a staggered arrangement of the crystalline tablets giving rise to a 20–30% higher modulus and lower tensile strength compared to a columnar arrangement. Importantly, the staggered microstructure is shown to have a highly tunable mechanical behavior with respect to the polymer-crystal interactions. The underlying reasons for the mechanical behavior are explained by showing the effect of polymer chain mobility and orientation and the load-carrying capacity for the constituents. Viscoelastic responses in terms of the storage and loss moduli and loss tangent are studied over three decades in frequency and again highlight the differences brought about by the microstructure. Nacre, also called mother-of-pearl, is a naturally occurring biomineral, largely studied by chemists, structural biologists, and physicists to understand its outstanding and diverse properties. Nacre is constituted of aragonite nanograins surrounded by organic matrix, and it has been established that the organic matrix is responsible for initiating and guiding the biomineralization process. The first challenge to study the organic matrix of nacre lays in its separation from the biomineral. Several extraction methods have been developed so far. They are categorized as either strong (e.g., decalcification) or soft (e.g., water, ethanol) and they allow specific extractions of targeted compounds. The structure of the nacreous organic matrix is complex, and it provides interesting clues to describe the mineralization process. Proteins, sugars, lipids, peptides, and other molecules have been identified and their role in mineralization investigated. Moreover, the organic matrix of nacre has shown interesting properties for human health. Several studies are investigating its activity on bone mineralization and its properties for skin care. Natural design and fabrication strategies have long served as a source of inspiration for novel materials with enhanced properties. Less investigated is the prospect of leveraging the complexity of readily available, naturally occurring micro-/nanostructures as platforms for investigating functional materials. In the field of phononics, exploiting structural biocomposites is gaining traction; but finding natural phononic structures that interact with ultra- and hypersonic acoustic waves remains an open quest. In this context, the phononic behavior of natural Nacre, a biocomposite often looked at for inspiration due to its superlattice-like architecture of alternating organic and inorganic phases, is here characterized. To such end, a combination of non-contact pump-probe laser ultrasonics techniques and Brillouin spectroscopy are employed to interrogate Nacre's hierarchical structure at the micro- and nanoscale and measure its phononic dispersion behavior in the MHz and GHz range. It is found that for wavelengths longer than the brick-and-mortar characteristic length, Nacre behaves as a dispersionless medium with effective transversely isotropic properties; but as the wavelengths become comparable to its structural periodicity an involved phononic spectrum arises which challenges the notion of a perfectly periodic, high mechanical-contrast biocomposite., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

The mechanism of nacre formation in gastropods involves a vesicular system that transports organic and mineral precursors from the mantle epithelium to the mineralization chamber. Between them lies the surface membrane, a thick organic structure that covers the mineralization chamber and the forming nacre. The surface membrane is a dynamic structure that grows by the addition of vesicles on the outer side and recedes by the formation of interlamellar membranes on the inner side. By using a combination of electron microscopy imaging and spectroscopy, we have monitored the journey of the vesicles from the mantle epithelium to the mineralization chamber, focusing on the elemental composition of the organic structures at each stage. Our data reveal that transport occurs in lipid bilayer vesicles through exocytosis from the outer mantle epithelium. After release into the surface membrane, chitin undergoes a process of self-assembly and interaction with proteins, resulting in progressive changes of the internal structure of the surface membrane until the final structure of the interlamellar membranes is acquired. Finally, these detach from the inner side of the surface membrane. Elemental analysis revealed the transport of a considerable amount of calcium bound to proteins, likely forming calcium-protein complexes. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The formation of nacre tablets occurs through the incorporation of organic and mineral precursors extruded from the mantle epithelium. Although much attention has been paid to the presence of amorphous phases in recent decades, the calcium transport system has not yet been elucidated. We have monitored the packaging of organic and mineral precursors in the form of vesicles from the mantle epithelium to the mineralization chamber. We have shown that the surface membrane represents the zone where chitin and protein polymerization takes place, acquiring the final structure for the formation of interlamellar membranes. The toughening mechanism of the nacre was widely investigated in recent decades, which presents a great prospect for designing high performance composite materials and engineering structures with bioinspired structures. To further elucidate which structural parameters and which kinds of morphology of the nacre-inspired structure are the best for improving tensile strength without sacrificing too much toughness is extremely significant for composite materials and engineering structures. The "brick-and-mortar" structure is a classical nacre-inspired bionic structure. Three characteristic structural parameters, including the aspect ratio ρ of the brick length and width, the thickness ratio β between the thickness of brick and mortar, and the spacing ratio τ between the width of brick and mortar, were used as variables to study their effect on tensile strength and toughness. It was found that ρ was the most prominent factor in determining the strength and toughness, and τ could improve the strength and toughness almost simultaneously. Racked and wedged morphology of the structural unit were established based on the structural parameters of the regular staggered unit, and were used to compare tensile behavior. It was found that the model with the wedged unit possessed the highest strength and toughness, and could absorb more strain energy during fracture crack growing. The crack propagation path further illustrated that the crack resisting ability of the wedged unit was the best. Our simulation results presented the connection between three characteristic structural parameters with the strength and toughness, and proved that the wedged staggered unit was the best in improving the strength and toughness. Nacre has emerged as a beneficial natural product for bone cells and tissues, but its effect was only studied by gavage in the ovariectomized mouse model. We sought to assess the antiosteoporotic effect of nacre through a nutritional supplementation in the ovariectomized rat model. Sixteen‐week‐old female Wistar rats were either Sham‐operated or bilateral ovariectomized (OVX) and then fed with standard diet (Sham and OVX groups) or standard diet supplemented with either 0.25% CaCO3 or nacre (OVX CaCO3 and OVX Nacre group, respectively) for 28 days (n = 10/group). The bone microarchitecture was assessed at appendicular and axial bones by micro‐computed tomography (μCT). Histomorphometric analysis was performed to determine cellular and dynamic bone parameters. Bone metabolism was also evaluated by biochemical markers and gene expression levels. Nacre‐based diet prevented the OVX‐induced bone loss better than that of the CaCO3 supplement, given the significant changes in trabecular bone volume fraction (BV/TV) both at the femoral distal metaphysis (difference, 35%; p = 0.004) and at the second lumbar spine (difference, 11%; p = 0.01). Trabecular osteoclast surfaces (Oc.S/BS) were also 1.5‐fold lower at the tibial proximal metaphysis in OVX Nacre group compared with OVX CaCO3 group (p = 0.02). By principal component analysis (PCA), OVX Nacre group formed a cluster away from OVX group and with a trend closest to Sham group. These data were consistent with biological measurements demonstrating a positive profile related to nacre supplementation, which blunted an increase in serum CTX level and enhanced serum P1NP secretion 14 days post‐OVX compared with CaCO3 supplementation. Bmp2 mRNA expression in OVX Nacre group was +1.76‐fold (p = 0.004) and +1.30‐fold (p = 0.20) compared with OVX and OVX CaCO3 groups, respectively. We conclude that supplementation with nacre could effectively limit bone loss induced by estrogen deficiency just after OVX in rats by modulating the negative imbalance of bone turnover. © 2022 The Authors.
