The surface of airless bodies like asteroids in the Solar System are known to be affected by space weathering. Experiments simulating space weathering are essential for studying the effects of this process on meteorite samples, but the problem is that the time spent to reproduce space weathering in these experiments is billions of times shorter than the actual phenomenon. In December 2010, the T-type asteroid 596 Scheila underwent a collision with a few-tens-of-meters impactor. A decade later, there is an opportunity to study how the surface layer of this asteroid is being altered by space weathering after the impact. To do so, we performed visible spectrophotometric and near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 596 Scheila. The acquired spectrum is consistent with those observed shortly after the 2010 impact event within the observational uncertainty range. This indicates that the surface color of dark asteroids is not noticeably changed by space weathering over a 10-year period. This study is the first to investigate color changes due to space weathering on an actual asteroid surface in the Solar System. Considering that fresh layers are regularly created on asteroid surfaces by collisions, we suggest a genetic link between D/T-type and dark (low albedo) X-complex asteroids and very red objects such as 269 Justitia, 732 Tjilaki (and 203 Pompeja). Spacecraft and ground-based observations show that the main rings of Saturn lack particles larger than 10 m. Tidal or collisional destruction of satellites/comets have been proposed as the origin of the main rings; however, Saturn's tide alone cannot grind km-sized fragments into submeter-sized particles because of the high mechanical strength of water ice and rock. The question arises as to why such large particles are not left in the current ring. It is known that thermal stress induced by diurnal and seasonal temperature variations can cause weathering and fragmentation of boulders and contribute to dust and regolith production on the Moon and terrestrial planets, and then such thermal stress can break particles larger than a critical radius while cannot smaller than the critical radius. In this study, we examined the role of thermal stress acting on Saturn's ring particles. We found that thermal stress can grind porous ring particles larger than 10-20 m, which explains the lack of particles larger than 10 m in Saturn's ring. Also, fragmentation by thermal stress can be adoptable for the Epsilon rings of Uranus. Furthermore, thermal stress caused by diurnal or seasonal temperature variation acting on boulders on surfaces of icy satellites and asteroids may play an important role in the evolution of their sizes. Our calculations explain the lack of boulders on icy satellites, except in the geologically active provinces such as the tiger stripes of Enceladus, where boulders are supplied by recent geological activity. Dust emission was detected on main-belt asteroid 596 Scheila in December 2010, and attributed to the collision of a few-tens-of-meters projectile on the surface of the asteroid. In such impact, the ejected material from the collided body is expected to mainly comes from its fresh, unweathered subsurface. Therefore, it is expected that the surface of 596 was partially or entirely refreshed during the 2010 impact. By combining spectra of 596 from the literature and our own observations, we show that the 2010 impact event resulted in a significant slope change in the near-infrared (0.8 to 2.5 {\mu}m) spectrum of the asteroid, from moderately red (T-type) before the impact to red (D-type) after the impact. This provides evidence that red carbonaceous asteroids become less red with time due to space weathering, in agreement with predictions derived from laboratory experiments on the primitive Tagish Lake meteorite, which is spectrally similar to 596. This discovery provides the very first telescopic confirmation of the expected weathering trend of asteroids spectrally analog to Tagish Lake and/or anhydrous chondritic porous interplanetary dust particles. We study the packing fraction of clusters in free-falling streams of spherical and irregularly shaped particles using flash X-ray radiography. The estimated packing fraction of clusters is low enough to correspond to coordination numbers less than 6. Such coordination numbers in numerical simulations correspond to aggregates that collide and grow without bouncing. Moreover, the streams of irregular particles evolved faster and formed clusters of larger sizes with lower packing fraction. Metallic bodies that were the cores of differentiated bodies are sources of iron meteorites and are considered to have formed early in the terrestrial planet region before migrating to the main asteroid belt. Surface temperatures and mutual collision velocities differ between the terrestrial planet region and the main asteroid belt. To investigate the dependence of crater shape on temperature, velocity and impactor density, we conducted impact experiments on room- and low-temperature iron meteorite and iron alloy targets (carbon steel SS400 and iron-nickel alloy) with velocities of 0.8-7 km/s. The projectiles were rock cylinders and metal spheres and cylinders. Oblique impact experiments were also conducted using stainless steel projectiles and SS400 steel targets which produced more prominent radial patterns downrange at room temperature than at low temperature. Crater diameters and depths were measured and compiled using non-dimensional parameter sets based on the $\pi$-group crater scaling relations. Two-dimensional numerical simulations were conducted using iSALE-2D code with the Johnson-Cook strength model. Both experimental and numerical results showed that the crater depth and diameter decreased with decreasing temperature, which strengthened the target, and with decreasing impact velocity. The decreasing tendency was more prominent for depth than for diameter, i.e., the depth/diameter ratio was smaller for the low temperature and low velocity conditions. The depth/diameter ratios of craters formed by rock projectiles were shallower than those of craters formed by metallic projectiles. Our results imply that the frequency distribution of the depth/diameter ratio for craters on the surface of metallic bodies may be used as a probe of the past impact environment of metallic bodies., Comment: Icarus, accepted (corrected version)

The cohesion of particles has a significant effect on the properties of small bodies. In this study, we measured in open air, the cohesive forces of tens of micron-sized irregularly shaped meteorite, silica sand, glass powder, and spherical glass particles, using a centrifugal method. In addition, we estimated the amount of water vapor adsorbed on the particles under the measurement conditions. The measured cohesive forces of the meteorite particles are tens of times smaller than those of an ideally spherical silica particle and correspond to the submicron-scale effective (or equivalent) curvature radius of the particle surface. Moreover, based on the estimated amount of water vapor adsorbed on the particles, we expect the cohesive forces of the particles in airless bodies to be approximately 10 times larger than those measured in open air. Based on the measurement results, we estimate that the cohesive forces of the particles on asteroids are typically in the sub-micro-Newton range, and that the particles on fast-rotating asteroids are tens of microns in size., Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures, 7 tables. The porosity of an asteroid is important when studying the evolution of our solar system through small bodies and for planning mitigation strategies to avoid disasters due to asteroid impacts. Our knowledge of asteroid porosity largely relies on meteorites sampled on Earth. However, chondrites sampled on Earth are suggested to be sorted by strength. In this study, we obtained an estimate of the most porous structure of primordial "granular" chondrite parent bodies based on measurements of the compaction behavior of chondrite component analogs. We measured compaction curves of dust and dust-bead mixture samples. The dust sample consisted of various spherical and irregular particles with diameters on the order of 10^0-10^1 $\mu$m. The mixture sample consisted of dust and beads with different dust volume fractions (~0.2-1). We used 1.5 and 4.8 $\mu$m particles as dust as a first step, although the typical size of materials in matrix may be much smaller. We approximated the compaction curve of each sample with a power-law form and calculated the porosity structure of the primordial chondrite parent bodies using the experimental results. Our results show that the primordial parent bodies are likely to have higher porosity than the chondrites. Highly porous small bodies are thought to have been ubiquitous in the early solar system. Therefore, it is essential to understand the collision process of highly porous objects when considering the collisional evolution of primitive small bodies in the solar system. To date, impact disruption experiments have been conducted using high-porosity targets made of ice, pumice, and glass, and numerical simulations of impact fracture of porous bodies have also been conducted. However, a variety of internal structures of high-porosity bodies are possible. Therefore,laboratory experiments and numerical simulations in the wide parameter space are necessary. In this study, high-porosity targets of sintered hollow glass beads and targets made by mixing perlite with hollow beads were used in a collision disruption experiment to investigate the effects of the mixture on collisional destruction of high-porosity bodies. Among the targets prepared under the same sintering conditions, it was found that the targets with more impurities tend to have lower compressive strength and lower resistance against impact disruption. Further, destruction of the mixture targets required more impact energy density than would have been expected from compressive strength. It is likely that the perlite grains in the target matrix inhibit crack growth through the glass framework. Inelastic collisions occur among regolith particles, such as those in the ejecta curtain from a crater, and may cause clustering or agglomeration of particles and thus produce discrete patterns of ejecta deposits around a crater. Previous studies have shown that clusters, and even agglomerates, are formed via mutual, inelastic collisions of spherical particles due to adhering forces between particles in granular streams. To investigate the condition of agglomerate formation in granular streams, we conducted laboratory experiments of granular streams using both spherical and irregular, non-spherical particles. Measurements of particle adhesion in this study were performed using a centrifugal separation method, in contrast to the previous study in which atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used. This enabled simultaneous measurements of multiple particles of various shapes for a statistical analysis of the results. With similar relative velocities and adhesion values, irregular particles were found to form agglomerates much more easily than spherical particles. The axial ratio of the agglomerates of spherical particles and irregular particles was similar and was in accordance with those observed in previous laboratory studies, whereas the size of the agglomerates of irregular particles was larger than the size of spherical particles. The degree of agglomeration and the size of agglomerates can be used as an indicator of the shape or adhesive force of the particles in granular stream. The porosity structure of a granular body is an important characteristic that affects evolutionary changes in the body. We conducted compression experiments using fluffy granular samples with various particle sizes, shapes, and compositions. We approximated the pressure-filling factor relationship of each sample with a power law (a modified polytropic relationship). We also fit our previous data and literature data for fluffy granular samples using a power-law equation. The fitting with a power-law form was as good as that achieved with the equations used for powders in previous studies. The polytropic indices obtained in the current study ranged from ~0.01 to ~0.3 and tended to decrease with increasing particle size for samples of similar porosities. We calculated the radial porosity structure and bulk porosity of granular bodies with various radii using the Lane-Emden equation. The results provide the initial, most porous structures of accreted primordial bodies, or re-accumulated rubble-pile bodies consisting of particles that have compression properties similar to those of the assumed granular materials. Asteroid (162173) Ryugu is the target object of Hayabusa2, an asteroid exploration and sample return mission led by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Ground-based observations indicate that Ryugu is a C-type near-Earth asteroid with a diameter of less than 1 km, but the knowledge of its detailed properties is still very limited. This paper summarizes our best understanding of the physical and dynamical properties of Ryugu based on remote sensing and theoretical modeling. This information is used to construct a design reference model of the asteroid that is used for formulation of mission operations plans in advance of asteroid arrival. Particular attention is given to the surface properties of Ryugu that are relevant to sample acquisition. This reference model helps readers to appropriately interpret the data that will be directly obtained by Hayabusa2 and promotes scientific studies not only for Ryugu itself and other small bodies but also for the Solar System evolution that small bodies shed light on., Comment: 62 pages, 10 figures, 8 tables. Porosity is a key characteristic of the regolith on the surface of small bodies. The porosity of the regolith on the surface of asteroids is changed by applied pressure, and the relationship between pressure and porosity depends on the particle properties of the regolith. We performed compression measurements on samples of different materials, particle size distributions, and shapes to examine the relationship between particle size and pressure required for compression. We used a centrifuge and a compression testing machine for the experiments. The applied pressure for the centrifuge and the compression testing machine experiments ranged from 10^2 to 5x10^3 Pa and from 10^4 to 5x10^6 Pa, respectively. The initial porosity before compression was generally higher for samples with smaller particles and narrower particle size distributions. A sample compressed more easily when it consisted of smaller particles, probably due to smaller frictional forces between particles. We estimated the porosity of granular asteroids based on the results of our experiments. The estimated porosity at the center of a homogeneous asteroid with a radius of 50 km is 0.43. This porosity is typical of the porosity of asteroids of similar size.

Cratering on small bodies is crucial for the collision cascade and also contributes to the ejection of dust particles into interplanetary space. A crater cavity forms against the mechanical strength of the surface, gravitational acceleration, or both. The formation of moderately sized craters that are sufficiently larger than the thickness of the regolith on small bodies, in which mechanical strength plays the dominant role rather than gravitational acceleration, is in the strength regime. The formation of microcraters on blocks on the surface is also within the strength regime. On the other hand, the formation of a crater of a size comparable to the thickness of the regolith is affected by both gravitational acceleration and cohesion between regolith particles. In this short review, we compile data from the literature pertaining to impact cratering experiments on porous targets, and summarize the ratio of spall diameter to pit diameter, the depth, diameter, and volume of the crater cavity, and the ratio of depth to diameter. Among targets with various porosities studied in the laboratory to date, based on conventional scaling laws (Holsapple and Schmidt, J. Geophys. Res., 87, 1849-1870, 1982) the cratering efficiency obtained for porous sedimentary rocks (Suzuki et al., J. Geophys. Res. 117, E08012, 2012) is intermediate. A comparison with microcraters formed on a glass target with impact velocities up to 14 $km s^{-1}$ indicates a different dependence of cratering efficiency and depth-to-diameter ratio on impact velocity., Comment: belonging to the Special Issue of "Cosmic Dust IX"

The compression property of regolith reflects the strength and porosity of the regolith layer on small bodies and their variations in the layer that largely influence the collisional and thermal evolution of the bodies. We conducted compression experiments and investigated the relationship between the porosity and the compression using fluffy granular samples. We focused on a low-pressure and high-porosity regime. We used tens of {\mu}m-sized irregular and spherical powders as analogs of porous regolith. The initial porosity of the samples ranged from 0.80 to 0.53. The uniaxial pressure applied to the samples lays in the range from 30 to 4x10^5 Pa. The porosity of the samples remained at their initial values below a threshold pressure and then decreased when the pressure exceeded the threshold. We defined this uniaxial pressure at the threshold as "yield strength". The yield strength increased as the initial porosity of a sample decreased. The yield strengths of samples consisting of irregular particles did not significantly depend on their size distributions when the samples had the same initial porosity. We compared the results of our experiments with a previously proposed theoretical model. We calculated the average interparticle force acting on contact points of constituent particles under the uniaxial pressure of yield strength using the theoretical model and compared it with theoretically estimated forces required to roll or slide the particles. The calculated interparticle force was larger than the rolling friction force and smaller than the sliding friction force. The yield strength of regolith may be constrained by these forces. Our results may be useful for planetary scientists to estimate the depth above which the porosity of a regolith layer is almost equal to that of the regolith surface and to interpret the compression property of an asteroid surface obtained by a lander., Comment: Pages: 16, Tables: 3, Figures: 6

We revisited a mass ejection phenomenon that occurred in asteroid P/2010 A2 in terms of the dynamical properties of the dust particles and large fragments. We constructed a model assuming anisotropic ejection within a solid cone-shaped jet and succeeded in reproducing the time-variant features in archival observational images over ~3 years from 2010 January to 2012 October. When we assumed that the dust particles and fragments were ejected in the same direction from a point where no object had been detected in any observations, the anisotropic model can explain all of the observations including (i) the unique dust cloud morphology, (ii) the trail surface brightness and (iii) the motions of the fragments. Our results suggest that the original body was shattered by an impact with the specific energy of Q* <~ 350 J/kg, and remnants of slow antipodal ejecta (i.e., anisotropic ejection in our model) were observed as P/2010 A2. The observed quantities are consistent with those obtained through laboratory impact experiments, supporting the idea that the P/2010 A2 event is the first evidence of the impact shattering occurred in the present main asteroid belt., Comment: accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal
