Abstract

In this study, for the first time a comparison was done between sampling method of ammonia using NIOSH 6016 followed by spectrophotometry based on Nessler reagent (EPA method 350.2) to show the potential of spectrophotometry for determination of airborne concentrations of ammonia in occupational media. The study was performed in two phases. The first phase involved static preparation of different concentrations of ammonia, ranging from 0.02 to 0.4 mg in 5 L of air followed by sampling from these concentrations and extraction/analysis based on NIOSH 6016 spectrophotometric method. The average recovery of analysis in step 1 was 94.90%. In the second phase, 33 air samples, collected from a petrochemical company, were analysed by both spectrophotometry and ion chromatography approaches. A very good correlation (R2 = 0.9974) was found between the two methods. The results showed that combination of sampling and extraction noted in NIOSH 6016 with the analysis approach based on Nessler reagents can be assumed as a précised, reliable, easy and applied method for the evaluation of short/long-time personal exposures and also environmental concentrations in occupational places. 14. Toxic responses of the liver and kidneys following occupational exposure to anesthetic gases

Abstract

This study was undertaken to determine whether exposure of operating room personnel to inhalation anesthetics, including nitrous oxide, isoflurane, and sevoflurane was associated with any hepatotoxic or nephrotoxic changes. Fifty-two operating room personnel and 52 non-exposed subjects were studied. A questionnaire pertaining to demographic characteristics and medical history of participants was completed. Fasting blood samples were taken from all subjects to measure the functional parameters of kidneys and liver. Biological monitoring was also performed to detect the urinary concentration of IAs. Urinary concentrations of nitrous oxide, isoflurane, and sevoflurane were found to be 175.8 ± 77.52, 4.95 ± 3.43, and 15.0 3± 16.06 ppm, respectively. The mean levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyltransferase, Alpha-glutathione-S-transferase, as well as the serum levels of kidney injury molecule-1, creatinine and calcium were significantly higher in the exposed group. Statistically significant associations were observed between exposure to inhalation anesthetics and the mean levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and gamma-glutamyltransferase, serum creatinine, kidney injury molecule-1, and calcium. Under the exposure scenario described in the present study, occupational exposure to inhalation anesthetics was associated with subtle, subclinical, pre-pathologic changes in the parameters of liver and kidneys. Additionally, Alpha-glutathione-S-transferase and kidney injury molecule-1 were found to be sensitive markers for early detection of subclinical changes in the parameters of kidney and liver function in subjects who are exposed to inhalation anesthetics., EXCLI Journal;Vol. 19 2020

24. Respiratory symptoms and lung functional impairments associated with occupational exposure to poultry house pollutants

Abstract

This study aimed to assess respiratory symptoms and the pulmonary function test (PFT) in a group of poultry workers. The prevalence of respiratory symptoms was determined. Airborne concentrations of total and repairable dusts exceeded the threshold limit values. Gram-positive cocci and Cladosporium were the dominant genera of bacteria and fungi, respectively. The prevalence of respiratory symptoms was significantly higher in the exposed subjects. Mean baseline values of forced expiratory volume (FEV1), FEV1to forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio (FEV1/FVC) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were significantly lower in the exposed group. Significant cross-shift decrements were noted in vital capacity (VC), FVC, FEV1, PEF and FEV1/FVC of the exposed subjects. A dominant pattern of lung function abnormality was found to be obstructive. Exposure to poultry pollutants may result in a significant increase in the prevalence of respiratory symptoms as well as both acute reversible and chronic irreversible decrements in the PFT.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to ascertain whether occupational exposure to asphalt fumes, under normal working conditions, is associated with any hepatotoxic, nephrotoxic, or hematotoxic response. This was a cross-sectional study in which 210 subjects (80 exposed and 130 reference subjects) were investigated. Using standard methods, atmospheric concentrations of total particulate and benzene-soluble fractions of asphalt fumes were measured. Additionally, urine and blood samples were taken from subjects for complete blood count, white blood cell differential test, urinalysis, and routine biochemical tests of kidney and liver function. Both groups were similar as far as their demographic variables and smoking habits were concerned. The levels of exposure to total particulate and benzene-soluble fractions were estimated to be 0.9 ± 0.2 and 0.32 ± 0.09 mg m−3, respectively (mean ± SD), both of which being lower than the existing threshold limit values. Statistically, significant associations between exposure to asphalt fumes and changes in most liver and kidney function tests and complete blood count parameters provided circumstantial evidence in favor of the notion that exposure to sub-threshold limit value levels of total particulate and benzene-soluble fractions is associated with early liver and kidney dysfunction as well as hematological disorders. 36. The Effect of Exposure to Low Levels of Chlorine Gas on the Pulmonary Function and Symptoms in a Chloralkali Unit.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The present study was undertaken to ascertain whether (or not) long term occupational exposure to low (sub-TLV levels) atmospheric concentrations of chlorine gas was associated with any significant decrements in the parameters of pulmonary function and/or increased prevalence of respiratory symptoms. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study that was performed in 2012, 54 workers of a local chloralkali unit and 38 non-exposed office staff were enrolled and compared. Atmospheric concentrations of chlorine gas were measured by numerous sampling with gas detector tubes. Data on respiratory symptoms were gathered using a standard questionnaire. Furthermore, spirometry test was performed for subjects both prior to and at the end of shift. RESULTS: Mean atmospheric concentration of chlorine gas was 0.27 ±0.05 ppm that was lower than the existing TLV value for this toxic irritant gas. Symptoms of respiratory diseases were significantly more frequent among exposed subjects than in referent individuals. Additionally, mean values of most parameters of pulmonary function including FEV1 (P=0.031), FEV1/FVC ratio (P=0.003) and PEF (P=0.005) were significantly lower than their corresponding values for unexposed subjects. Additional cross shift decrements were also noted in some lung functional capacities, although changes were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to sub-TLV levels of chlorine gas is associated with statistically significant decrements in the parameters of pulmonary function as well as increased prevalence of respiratory symptoms.
