This article examines the 'Reader and Reporter' (Dokja wa gija) section of the newspaper Donga ilbo , which first appeared on 1 January 1925. Readers could both submit articles on topics selected by reporters and suggest topics for reporters to write about. Over the course of its run, a total of thirty-one features were published, only five of which were written by readers. The 'Reader and Reporter' section provides a direct view of the interactions between reporters and readers that shaped the format and content of the newspaper. After an overview of the society desk and the society page of the newspaper, this article focuses on the most common type of feature requested by readers: personal profiles of well-known figures. They can be seen as efforts to counter two trends of the time: the forgetting of the 1919 March First Movement and the depoliticization of women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Improving the representation of women in corporate leadership is a key postfeminist project. Postfeminism—or the integration of women's empowerment and neoliberalism in the decades following the Women's Movement—has shaped the experience of Australian women in corporate leadership roles since the 1990s. As such, while efforts to improve the number of women in leadership have yielded admirable progress, achieving sustainable improvements in corporate diversity requires attending to collective postfeminist scripts. In order to better understand the global and local features of Australian postfeminism, this article analyses “Corporate Woman,” a mainstream newspaper column published regularly by the
Australian Financial Review between 1988 and 1998. It finds that similar political and economic systems, and feminist histories, encouraged Australian postfeminism to adopt many core transnational tenets. At the same time, aspects of Australia's national history and identity, including egalitarianism, emphasis on nuclear families, and context of major economic change, contributed to localism in postfeminism's expression. This expands our understanding of postfeminism, and can help empower corporate women by uncovering the collective cognitive maps that have guided policy interventions, and women's lived experiences in corporate leadership roles. This paper focuses on the effects of SBA lending and its possible effects on the economic growth in Tennessee. After all, claims about the belief that small business is the driving force behind job creation and economic growth are found throughout political speeches, newspaper columns, and public policy forums. These claims are frequently presented as justification for tax incentives, regulatory policies, and other government programs that favor small business by removing barriers to entry. Access to capital is often the biggest obstacle for an entrepreneur. This research focused on the relationship between guaranteed loans from the SBA and the economic growth of Tennessee. This research found a positive relationship between the SBA 7A lending and state growth in Tennessee. Thus, providing policymakers evidence that pursuing policies which support economic freedom will continue to support Tennessee’s state growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the impact of the Holden family, renowned English puppeteers, on French fairground puppet theater from 1879 to 1949. French audiences were enthralled by the precision, freedom, and elegance of the Holden fantoches marionettes, which parodied human gestures and expressions. The Holden manipulation system, characterized by intricate controls and coordination among operators, allowed for smoother movements and was emulated by French puppeteers. The Holdens' shows gained immense popularity in France, leading to a "Holdenomania" phenomenon, with traveling showmen incorporating American-style fantoches into their performances. The Pajot family, in particular, integrated the Holden fantoches into their program and continued to use them until World War I. Newspaper columns in France in 1879 discussed the shows of Thomas and John Holden, who introduced puppetry to the country. Their puppets' ability to dance in contemporary styles attracted a diverse audience. The Holdens' influence on French puppetry was profound, giving rise to new forms of entertainment like music hall shows. Their manipulation system and marionettes left a lasting legacy, shaping French puppeteers and contributing to the development of puppetry as an art form in France. [Extracted from the article]

STONE Age , *ISLAMIC philosophy , *NEWSPAPER sections, columns, etc. , *LEGISLATORS , *HUMAN beings , *ANTHROPOLOGY - Abstract
Halil Hâlid Bey (1869-1931), an intellectual who served as a diplomat, member of parliament, journalist and academician, was a productive and hardworking person who wrote many books, articles and newspaper columns. It is possible to say that Halil Hâlid Bey, who lived in England for a long time and even worked as a teacher of Turkish at the University of Cambridge, had lived in Algeria, Sudan, Egypt and India, which gave him a unique and critical perspective on the East and the West, which he described as two different civilizations. Although he drew attention especially with his writings in which he criticized the imperialist policies of the British and warned Islamic societies to be vigilant against this expansionist attitude, the fact that he was an academic who taught courses such as the ethnography of Muslim societies, Islamic philosophy and anthropology has been ignored. In this article, we will share the transliteration of his articles titled “The Emergence of Man and The Stone Ages” published in 1928 in the Journal of Darülfünun Theology Faculty in order to illuminate this obscure aspect and to demonstrate his competence in this field. We think that these articles deserve a place, even if it’s a small one, in our anthropological literature as they reveal the adventure of human beings from the emergence of life to the stone ages with a fluent and interesting competence in the light of anthropological knowledge. The article deals with the role of cultural reporting in the Tirnauer Wochenblatt weekly, which was first published in German and later in Hungarian (as Nagyszombati Hetilap) in the Slovak town of Trnava between 1869 and 1918. For this purpose, the article analyses its 13th volume published in 1881 as an example. In analysing the content, four thematic areas of focus in the cultural coverage can be identified: theatre, music, literature, and other aspects of cultural life. The newspaper lacked a separate section devoted to culture and a closer examination of the German-language section of the newspaper reveals that the relevant texts largely focused on the local area. The high importance of theatrical performances is evident from the frequent reports. The same applies to musical events. Literature - apart from the publication of serialised novels in the Illustriertes Sonntagsblatt supplement - received little attention. Superregional themes only appear in the case of special events or events somehow connected with the region. The newspaper provided a lot of information on the important role of the associations in the cultural life of the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is an irony of history that since texts transcend the intentions and purposes of their authors, their meaning and significance are often contested anew as they enter new historical contexts; even historical texts are thus subject to reading and criticism over time. This article discusses the posthumous fate of Henry Stubbe's own text on Islamic history, The Rise and Progress of Mahometanism—seen by some to represent a Copernican revolution in the study of Islam. The fate of this work is a clear example of the critical contingencies and fluctuating fortunes experienced by a corpus of texts. The continuing existence of a text as an object open to reconfiguration and re-evaluation is termed its after-history (Nachgeschichte) or afterlife (Nachleben). This notion of the afterlife of an object as a period of critical appreciation and political appropriation aptly defines the fate and fame of The Rise and Progress of Mahometanism. The present study seeks to explore the narrative surrounding a publication authored by Stubbe in the 17th century and finally published by Hafiz Mahmud Khan Shairani, with the critical support of Ottoman intellectual Halil Halid Bey, nearly two centuries later. Its objective is to investigate how the life and contributions of a figure whose work has transcended generations was resurrected within the political backdrop of the 20th century, as evidenced in the columns of Ottoman newspapers. This study aims to explore the discourse representation of COVID-19 in editorial columns in Jordanian newspapers. The corpus of the study consists of sixty-four editorial columns from three Jordanian newspapers, namely, Addustour, Al-Rai, and Al-Ghad during the period March to November, 2020. A thematic analysis was used in the data analysis to identify the themes represented by the Jordanian newspapers' editorials concerning COVID-19. A critical discourse analysis (CDA) was also adopted to understand the discourse representation strategies and discursive practices used by the Jordanian newspapers' editorial columns in their representation of COVID-19. The study has found that the editorials used thirteen themes in representing COVID-19, including pandemic, economic consequences, fighting COVID-19, abiding by health measures, crisis, danger, outbreak, lockdown, raising awareness, fear and worry, lifestyle changing, threat to humanity, and killing. Furthermore, the editorials used ten representational discourse strategies to represent COVID-19, namely, positive self-presentation, implication, actor description, authority, example/illustration, evidentiality, lexicalization, metaphor, negative other-presentation, and number game. The current proliferation of digital platforms and the reduction of arts coverage in mainstream media outlets in Canada has given rise to many theatre reviewers whose contributions to critical discourse are often dismissed because they lack professional legitimization. This article uses Jacques Rancière's formulations of the ignorant schoolmaster and the emancipated spectator to interrogate the distinction between professional and amateur critics. It argues that participants and practices typically understood as amateur provide models of criticism that are pluralistic, affective, and inclusive. Analyzing three central case studies—a newspaper column featuring "regular" spectators, reviews by children and youth, and mentorship initiatives for emerging Black, Indigenous, and people of colour critics—the article demonstrates how amateurs challenge the notion of expertise as exclusive knowledge possessed by the elite. It highlights the benefits of opening up critical conversations during this crucial moment when the Canadian theatre industry is confronting its complicity in systemic injustices and seeking to attract new audiences. Iman Hajji's book, "Première guerre mondiale, panislamisme et nationalisme tunisien: Parcours de figures tunisiennes en Allemagne au début du XXe siècle," explores the activities of five Tunisian exiles living in Germany and the Ottoman Empire during World War I. The book fills in gaps in our knowledge of these individuals' actions during the war, which were previously only known through German sources. However, the author acknowledges that further research is needed to fully understand the Tunisian opposition's role in the war efforts of the Central Powers. The book also highlights the progressive views of Ali Bach Hamba, a prominent figure in the Young Tunisian movement, who believed in modern education for Tunisian students. The macro-framing literature presents something of a theoretical conundrum. While an inherently dynamic concept, most work has treated frames as static. In addition to leaving our theories of framing underspecified, this also has implications for how we go about understanding and resolving our major societal problems, including flows of displaced people, the setting for this paper. We also lack insight into the ways in which media organizations, some of the most important arbiters of understanding in our society, shape the framing process. We address these points by investigating the ways in which the photograph of Alan Kurdi lying dead on a beach in Turkey radically transformed the framing of the European migration crisis by UK newspapers. In so doing, we develop theory about two important aspects of framing change. First, in showing how macro-frames are more malleable than often perceived, we develop the concept of an emotional array that we show is central to understanding how frame composition changes over time. Second, we expose the distinct mechanisms by which framing change takes place in media organizations characterized by different ideologies.

This article presents the case of Turkey within the framework of this special issue entitled "On Islamist Parties and the Inclusion-Moderation Hypothesis". I argue that rather than a distinction between the concepts of "tactical" and "ideological" moderation that the literature talks about, a distinction between the concepts of an "inclusionary-populist" and "moderate Islamist" party could provide a more useful insight over the role of Islamist and post-Islamist parties in democratization and de-democratization processes. Through a re-analysis of the secondary literature and a content analysis of 196 newspaper columns written by three pro-democracy intellectuals, I label the AKP's transition period from moderate-Islamism toward authoritarianism as its inclusionary populist phase. I show that in contexts marked by deep ideological divisions and unconsolidated democratic institutions, a shift in party identity from moderate-Islamism toward inclusionary populism can be taken as the early signal of an unfolding process of autocratization. "Justice and Hope: Essays, lectures and other writings" by Raimond Gaita is a collection of his works spanning from 1990 to 2022, covering a wide range of topics such as truth, justice, love, and ethical tragedy. Gaita's writings focus on moral themes like saintly love, common humanity, and the importance of remorse, offering a unique perspective on morality, law, and culture. While Gaita's philosophical approach may be challenging to engage with due to its visionary nature, his work resonates with readers by illuminating the complexities of moral understanding and the realm of meaning. The book also explores the intersection of religious sensibilities with ethical values, highlighting the ongoing struggle to sustain ethical language and concepts in a post-Christian world." Boleros, guarachas, and other popular music rhythms resonate across Gabriel García Márquez's work. Despite this, only a few mentions of cumbias appear in his novels, letters, short stories, and other writing. The present study analyzes the changes in Gabo's capacity to listen to cumbias and cumbiambas in his work across time. I show that, in early work, cumbia appears as an event incapable of producing semiosis, and Gabo is unable to fully listen to it. This inability gradually shifts, however, towards a listening for cumbia as sameness when reproduction technologies like film and vinyl make Caribbean music widely available and desirable. Analyzing GGM's columns for the newspaper El Universal (1948) and personal correspondence about the documentary Un carnaval para toda la vida (1961), I read Gabo's shifting attention to cumbia as a result of what I call "distant listening," a listening practice and positionality in which the authorial I perceives certain sound events as alien, thus preventing sound from entering the literary archive. Cumbia elicits GGM's attention when Caribbean music becomes available in reproducible media such as film and vinyl. Cumbias on vinyl help him produce what I call a "reproducible authentic," associated with a letrado listening positionality that listens for generic features in cumbia. That is, a cumbia that represents an authentic cultural manifestation using reproducible media such as vinyl records and film while maintaining the properties of a non-semiotic event. While the idea that Beethoven had African ancestry became popular in the 1960s during the Civil Rights struggle in the United States, its conception arose during an earlier moment: the global New Negro movement of the 1920s. Appearing in newspaper columns, music journals, and essays, Black American writings on Beethoven challenged white musicians' claims to the canon of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. This article argues that the project of making Beethoven Black belonged to a greater and more ambitious endeavour to rewrite Western music history. Black musicologists sought to globalize the Western canon, and in so doing, critique its grand narratives. Locating Black musical idioms in eighteenth-century piano sonatas or conducting archival research on Black European figures such as George Bridgetower, their music histories challenged readers to re-examine just who, exactly, had contributed to the project of cultural modernity and on what grounds. The written press for young people participates in the primary socialization - and therefore in the sports socialization - of its readers and can therefore open up the field of possibilities, arouse admiration or even "vocations", as well as participate in a broader process of stigmatization/discrimination. Based on a plural empirical device, this article focuses on the sports contents broadcasted by what can be considered as an unavoidable journalistic reference in France: Le Petit Quotidien. It first shows that sport does not really constitute a "media pillar" of this magazine. It then reveals a differential treatment of physical, sports, artistic and traditional activities. Finally, it presents the different ways of presenting sports and football in the daily newspaper's columns: a tendency to illustrate sports through images, while football is more developed through writing. Citizens' views of the political, social and economic character of foreign countries is largely based on the valence frames – positive, neutral or negative – established in newspaper articles consumed directly from the press or indirectly through republication. Looking at stories on China's one-child policy in the Australian press, the study used a mixed qualitative and quantitative methodology to investigate together all extrinsic factors that might drive the tone of articles on foreign countries. An analysis of factors including newspaper ownership, format, audience, market reach and reporter gender or location suggests a primary driver might be the newspaper audience – owners provide stories that retain their audience (and advertisers). In the nineteenth century, Irish newspaper culture became more experimental in nature. The form of Irish nationalist newspapers as an assemblage of various registers and genres embodied the politics of Irish nationalism and anti-colonialism in the period. These media innovations, as well as the forms of writing disseminated, transformed again during the Great Famine in Ireland (1846–51). During and after the Famine, the gothic was mobilized in newspaper columns, often in service of producing critiques of empire. Examining Irish newspaper writing on famine in India and on the Morant Bay Rebellion, this essay argues that engagement with the gothic in the anti-colonialist press in Victorian Ireland allowed for the emergence of powerful and distinctly internationalist critiques of colonial capitalism and its violent apparatuses. This paper addresses the linguistics column that Juan B. Selva published in the pedagogical journal La Obra between 1923 and 1927, with the aim of examining both the criteria of authority regarding linguistic knowledge, as well as the ideological assessments and attitudes expressed by the author in relation to the linguistic phenomena he describes. The analysis of the column (which was published in a context in which Argentina was witnessing the institutionalization of linguistics and the expansion of debates on language in the press) allows us to corroborate the centrality of normative issues, a characteristic feature of the genre. However, it also reveals the emergence of a discourse that rejects prescriptive positions and, instead, seeks scientific explanations for the linguistic phenomena it records. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The memory policy of the era was dominated by the need to recall the Hungarian Renaissance culture, which was most spectacularly manifested in the construction of the Buda castle environment and the historicizing buildings and cityscape of the capital. The reconstruction of the Matthias Church started in 1874, and in the mid-1880s they began to expand the Buda Royal Palace, which was formulated as an expectation that it should be more beautiful than the one that belonged to King Matthias. The great king thus became the benchmark for this period. Since the Vasárnapi Ujság faithfully reflected the public consciousness, it is, therefore, possible to explore the vividness of the memory surrounding King Matthias in the weekly newspaper. The artistic representations more courageously and willingly sought to portray the person of King Matthias, while the scientific research and the writings describing them focused more on the events, circumstances and persons connected to him. The brief overview of reception history indicates that King Matthias represented the standard in Hungary since the once brilliant era was due to the personal gifts and abilities of the king, who at the same time became a role model of the ruler for posterity. It is not possible to single out any of the columns of the weekly newspaper in terms of which provided more space for Matthias’ memory, because he was mentioned extremely often in the most diverse areas of public life at the time, either directly or indirectly. The frequency of references shows that a vivid memory of Matthias characterized the time of dualism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ITALIAN language ,NEWSPAPER sections, columns, etc. - Abstract
This paper explores the theoretical question of linguistic coherence by investigating lexical variation in contemporary Italian. In order to tackle issues regarding the coherence of lexical choice, variation is investigated with methods from lexical lectometry, which approaches the structure of language varieties (i.e. lects) by studying aggregate-level lexical distances between them. Based on uniformity measures, as introduced by Geeraerts et al. (1999), we have calculated the internal and external uniformity of spoken and written traditional standard Italian (represented by the academic section of the CORIS corpus for written Italian and the formal parts of the KIP corpus for spoken Italian) and neo-standard Italian (represented by the ParlaTO corpus for spoken Italian and the newspaper section of the CORIS corpus). The results confirm the hypothesis that two standard norms coexist in contemporary Italian and that traditional standard Italian appears to be more coherent at the lexical level than neo-standard Italian. Yet the study also indicates that other forms of coherence exist in contemporary Italian, depending on the adopted theoretical and methodological framework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is known that Aron Pumnul - linguist, historian, literary critic, theologian, teacher of Mihai Eminescu - was born into a Greek Catholic family in the village of Cuciulata in Transylvania, and after completing his theology studies in 1846 at the Catholic Institute "St. Barbara" in Vienna, he was ordained a Greek Catholic priest. In publications in Romania, especially in Transylvania, the Greek Catholicism of Professor Aron Pumnul was strongly emphasized. The author presents an unpublished document, found in the State Archive of the Chernivtsi Region (Ukraine), from which it appears that in 1849 A. Pumnul switched to the Orthodox confession following his baptism, which was recorded in the register of the newborn of the Church of St. Nicolai in Chernivtsi. In support of this idea, other unpublished documents are presented, such as the record of the professor's marriage to Ecaterina Teodorino, the birth of his son John or the death of the scholar, documents in which his Orthodox confession is confirmed. After the passing of the Greek Catholic A. Pumnul to Orthodoxy, his activity as a militant for the social and national rights of the Romanians takes on a new scope: even from the first months he stands out as editor of the Romanian section of the newspaper "Bucovina", promotes national culture, researches Romanian history, language and literature, educates a young generation of Romanian intellectuals, writes and prints the famous "Lepturariu...", is the beloved teacher of the poet Mihai Eminescu. Having arrived in Orthodox Bukovina, the great scholar understood that only by becoming Orthodox could he be of real use to the Romanians here. For him, above all, it was the service of the nation and its culture, regardless of political boundaries and religious differences that had arisen in the course of history. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Travel section of a newspaper is composed of texts which purport to at least partly comply with the ethical value of journalistic objectivity, yet the border between this type of writing and the overtly promotional texts produced in the tourism sector is somewhat blurred. This paper compares linguistic features in samples of text from Tourist Board websites and the Travel section and nine other sections of The Guardian to determine whether Travel Journalism can be categorised as a type of journalism, or whether it bears distinct similarities to Tourism Discourse. The results suggest that Travel Journalism differs from the other newspaper sections and is quite similar to the Language of Tourism on the basis of some features. However, in relation to others, it is decidedly different, thereby suggesting that Travel Journalism can be cleared of the allegation of being unduly influenced by the texts produced by the tourism industry. This study utilized computational techniques for a reliable analysis of discourse. These techniques were adopted to analyze the progress of Saudi social change in terms of women's empowerment within the Saudi transformation program. The data from open source 2021–2022 Saudi newspaper archives were automatically crawled using cutting-edge computational techniques and structured according to the sections of the Saudi newspapers: front page, economy, international, sports, society, culture and religion. The analysis was based on computing the minimally uneven distribution of the relative frequencies of the occurrence of the central word (the Arabic forms of woman and women) from the years 2021 to 2022. This produced two samples of text data, each of which represented the respective years. Calculating the normalized and adjusted frequencies of the central word from each section in the data from each year was important to avoid unbalanced absolute frequencies in the qualitative analysis stage. In addition, dispersion measures showed that the amount of variance in terms of the lexical dispersion of the central word was not high. The observable facts from the quantitative analysis produced a more accurate observational sample of citations, which we qualitatively analyzed. The results of the latter showed a considerable ascending change in favor of empowering women as a consequence of Saudi Vision 2030. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What leads journalists to adopt feminist framings by linking news topics to gender-based inequalities? While scholarship often mobilizes individualized explanations, such as journalists’ personal beliefs, this article investigates how structural factors inform feminist journalism. It draws from Dutch and French media reports on street harassment and interviews with journalists and their sources. Concepts of gender-based violence were largely absent from Dutch articles, whereas feminist framings dominated French reports on this issue. This article shows how the institutionalization of feminism and the existence of newspaper sections dedicated to gender issues inform whether journalists consider feminist knowledge as compatible with objectivity standards. Background: The news media play an essential role in shaping public opinion. Analyzing a specific issue reported in the news media provides insight and considerations for a government to form a policy. This study aimed to assess the portrayal of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in Indonesian news media, including the variety of arguments being presented and the actors behind them. Methods: We used a paid service database from eBdesk to collect Indonesian news articles from 2020 to 2021 using the keywords 'rokok elektronik' (electronic cigarette), 'rokok elektrik' (electric cigarette), 'e-rokok' (e-cigarette), 'vape', and 'vaping'. Content analysis of 551 full-text news articles was conducted to identify the concepts, topics, and frames of quoted arguments and to examine whether any frames were presented by different types of organizations and the origin of actors. Results: News articles related to e-cigarettes were mostly published in the national newspaper and in the non-health section of the newspaper desk. A total of 891 arguments from 393 persons representing 212 institutions were identified. Twenty-eight concepts were further categorized into 12 topics. Health impact was the most frequently reported topic, followed by regulation, tax/price, and e-cigarettes as smoking cessation tools. Overall, the articles and arguments with positive tones toward e-cigarettes outnumbered negative articles and arguments. The industry, university, and research-based institutions were the most involved types of organizations in the news articles. There were more neutral frames toward e-cigarettes among government, even though the frame within the non-health government sector was reported to be more positive toward e-cigarettes. Conclusions: Although health impact is the most reported topic, the actors involved in delivering arguments were mainly from the non-health sector, including when the news articles were published by the newspaper desk. The e-cigarette issue in Indonesia was mainly played by the non-health sector, which is more inclined toward economic interest than health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ian Campbell's poem series about an age-old jacaranda tree in a university courtyard is an artistic venture across three languages: French, Indonesian and English. The series initiated with a French poem composed in 1989, followed by an Indonesian rendition published in the literary section of a newspaper in Bandung, West Java, in 2004, and concluded with an English version. Campbell's trilingual poetic exploration demonstrates how a single 'concept,' or the essence of a poem transfigures when articulated in the languages he is conversant with. His approach is reflective of his work in an earlier issue of PORTAL--Vol. 14, No 1, April 2017--which displayed thematic unity across poems in English, Spanish and Indonesian. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
