ABSTRACT Being aimed at the strain path–related ductile fracture characteristic, this research develops a two‐component stress‐based DF2016 fracture model with 10 parameters through combining two single‐component corresponding fracture model with the addition form. This model possesses high flexibility to describe the ductile fracture behavior in various stress states. Stress‐based fracture‐related variables of the specimens with 10 different structures for WE43 alloy are captured, and the hardening behavior is with some strength differential effect. These fracture stresses have a strong sensitiveness to stress triaxiality and Lode parameter. Fracture loci of WE43 alloy are constructed by the proposed model with the smaller prediction error of 0.25683 than the stress‐based DF2016 fracture model (0.527). The reliability and high flexibility of the developed model are further uncovered through the description of ductile fracture behavior of AA2024‐T351 alloy. Composite structures in the aerospace and railway industries frequently experience single or multiple low‐ or high‐velocity impacts. The dynamic behavior of composite structures under single impacts cannot be extrapolated to multiple impacts. This study investigates the influence of the distance between projectiles in simultaneous multiple impact scenarios using a finite element model for multiple impacts on carbon fiber‐reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate plates. The critical distance between projectiles, where stress wave interaction becomes significant, was identified. Results indicate that a distance between the centres of the projectiles of approximately two to three times the projectile diameter is the most damaging for simultaneous multiple impacts. Highlights: A finite element model for multiple impacts on CFRP laminate plates was developed.Four different distances between projectiles were evaluated.The ballistic limit, out‐of‐plane displacements, energy absorption, and related parameters were studied.A distance of twice the projectile diameter was identified as the most critical.The distance between projectiles significantly affects the synergistic effects. Introduction: The suspended sediment concentration (SSC) is an important consideration in marine engineering. Sediment movement characteristics can be studied by considering the fortnightly behavior of SSC. However, this consideration currently lacks accurate mathematical representation. Method: In this study, a computationally efficient mathematical model capable of providing analytical solutions for predicting SSC based on resuspension, deposition, and advection was developed to further investigate the mathematical interpretation of fortnightly SSC behavior in coastal areas dominated by M2, S2, O1, K1, M4 and MS4 tides. The model decomposed the SSC into 35 quasi-harmonic terms as well as two terms with fortnightly period. Result: The model was applied at five observation sites in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and East China Sea, China, and validated to be able to reproduce the fortnightly variation of SSC. The results show that the primary fortnightly SSC term was generated by the combined action of M2 and S2 tidal currents and had a tidal frequency of 1.0159 °/h, which was equal to the difference between the frequencies of the two partial tides. Discussion: The resuspension properties only affected the amplitude of the fortnightly SSC term but did not affect the phase. The deposition properties affected both amplitude and phase. The quasi-harmonic analysis indicates that in certain shallow sea areas with strong nonlinear tidal interactions, the amplitude of the M4 tidal elevation can influence the mean SSC, while the amplitude of the MS4 tidal elevation can affect the fortnightly SSC amplitude. As the simplified model is based on certain assumptions, the application conditions of the quasi-harmonic analytical solution include an approximate reciprocating flow pattern, a tidal range significantly smaller than the water depth. A multiscale numerical framework has been developed to investigate the dispersion of deep-sea hydrothermal plumes that originate from the Endeavour Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge located in the Northeast Pacific. The analysis of simulation outputs presented in this study provides insights into the influences of tidal forcing and the buoyancy flux associated with hydrothermal venting on ocean circulation and plume dispersion in the presence of pronounced seafloor topography. The results indicate that tidal forcing drives anti-cyclonic circulation near the ridge-axis, while hydrothermal venting induces cyclonic circulation around vent fields within the axial rift valley. Tidal forcing has a notable impact on plume dispersion, particularly near the large topographic features to the north of the Endeavour Segment. Furthermore, plume dispersion exhibits notable inter-annual variability, with a northbound trajectory in 2016 and a southbound trajectory in 2021. The study also reveals that both buoyancy fluxes and tidal forcing enhance the mixing of hydrothermal plumes with ambient seawater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pile foundations, whether precast or cast-in-situ, are widely used in essential structures such as bridges and jetties. The common materials for pile fabrication include concrete, steel, and wood. However, these materials can deteriorate in harsh environments such as seawater and salty soil, affecting the integrity and service life of the pile-foundation systems. Problem: Traditional solutions, like using concrete piles confined with steel jackets, increase service life but are costly. The engineering community is exploring fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) as an alternative due to its noncorrosive nature and resistance to harsh environments. However, the relatively short track record of FRP raises concerns about its behavior under non-normal conditions, such as seismic events. Objective: To present a numerical assessment of the seismic behavior of an offshore bridge supported by a GFRP-filled tube pile group, considering the soil-structure interaction (SSI) and dynamic behavior of the composite system. Methods: The study involves a detailed proposed methodology for assessing the structure under earthquakes with different soil profiles. A numerical model is developed to evaluate the dynamic response and interaction between soil and the GFRP-filled tube pile group. Results: The results verify the expected benefits of using GFRP in pile foundations, focusing on the effects on the lateral capacity of structures under seismic conditions. Conclusion: The study contributes to understanding the feasibility and performance of GFRP-filled tube piles in offshore bridge foundations under seismic loads, providing insights into their potential advantages and limitations. Microcontinents are globally recognized as continental regions partially or entirely surrounded by oceanic lithosphere. Due to their positioning, they may become entangled in subduction zones and undergo either accretion or subduction. High‐pressure metamorphism in subducted continental rocks supports the idea that microcontinents can be subducted, regardless of their low densities. In this study, we used 2D numerical models to simulate collision of microcontinents with different lengths located at various distances from the upper plate in a subduction system characterized by different convergence velocities, in order to examine their effects on the thermo‐mechanical evolution of subduction systems. Specifically, we analyzed the conditions that favor subduction or accretion of microcontinents and investigated how their presence affects the thermal state within the mantle wedge. Our results reveal that the presence of microcontinents can lead to four styles of subduction: (a) continuous subduction; (b) continuous subduction with jump of the subduction channel; (c) interruption and reinitiation of the subduction; (d) continental collision. We discovered that longer microcontinents and higher velocities of the subducting plate contrast a continuous subduction favoring accretion, whereas farther initial locations from the upper plate and higher velocities of the upper plate favor the subduction of the microcontinent. In addition, we observed that the subduction style has direct effects on the thermal state, with important implications for the potential metamorphic conditions recorded by the subducted continental rocks. In particular, models characterized by parameters that favor the subduction of a larger amount of continental material from the microcontinent exhibit warm mantle wedges. Due to the relative motion of the tectonic plates, they can either be accreted to the continental plate or subducted below it. In our study, we used computer simulations to investigate the conditions that favor subduction or accretion and how the presence of microcontinents with different lengths and locations in the ocean can affect temperatures in the subduction system. Our results reveal that the presence of a microcontinent can lead to four different styles of subduction: (a) uninterrupted subduction; (b) relocation of the subduction from the front to the back of the microcontinent without interruption; (c) interruption and reinitiation of the subduction; and (d) no subduction. These styles are determined by the length of the microcontinent, its position in the ocean, and the velocity at which it converges toward the continent. We observed that higher convergence velocities and a greater initial distance between the microcontinent and the continent favor uninterrupted subduction (style a). In contrast, larger microcontinents and higher velocities of the ocean favor the relocation or momentary interruption of the subduction (styles b–d). Finally, we observed that microcontinents induce noticeable changes in temperatures within the subduction system. Plasma discharges under atmospheric pressure can be used to modify the electrical properties of metallic and dielectric surfaces. The aim of such a modification is to achieve an improvement in the characteristic parameters of the surface, for example in the area of the electrical strength of the surface, in order to achieve a higher ultimate level of electrical breakdown Eb when tested with pulsed or alternating electrical voltages. So far, research has focused on a set of functional experiments carried out using plasma on samples of two types of dielectric materials (thermoset, thermoplastic) with an impact on the final effect of the level of electrical breakdown voltage, electrical intensity and Eb. surface conductivity. The treatment technology requires repeatability and consideration of the industrial deployment conditions of plasma technology. The surface structure was modified in a defined and repeatable way by plasma discharge under atmospheric pressure without the presence of precursors. Methods to evaluate these modifications assessed the change in parameters related to sample type, repeatability and prediction of treatment stability. This research presents a numerical model dedicated for virtual patient diagnostics in the field of synthetic valve implantation. The model operates based on computational fluid dynamics solver with implemented rigid body motion solver. Characteristic indicators related to the prosthetic valve were determined to assess the correctness of cardiac system operation after implantation. A novel approach for dynamic time discretization was developed for reliable and time-efficient calculation. The solver efficiency and computational savings due to application of the developed time-discretization scheme is discussed. Numerical results were validated using experimental data acquired from a test rig, including mass flow meter, pressure transducers, and valve holder designed for this purpose. Multivariant analysis of the model constant was performed towards different levels of the valve resistance to motion. It is of great significance to better clarify the failure mechanism of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) with film cooling hole edges to prolong the TBCs' service life. In this paper, a numerical study of the film cooling model of flat plate with TBCs is carried out. The temperature field distribution of the TBCs is obtained by conjugate heat transfer, and the stresses of the TBCs at the edge of the film cooling hole are analyzed under real operating conditions, taking into account the TGO growth, plasticity, and creep properties of the material. The results show that due to the lower temperature of the film cooling hole edge, the TGO growth is slowed down, and the free-edge effect brought by the film cooling hole will play a large influence on the coating stress. The TBCs will have a large interfacial stress at the room temperature stage, and it will be more prone to flaking failure. In this paper, we revisit the classical energy transport equation for pure tidal flows in estuaries by including the effects of residual water level and freshwater discharge. Starting from the one-dimensional mass and momentum conservations, we derive analytical expressions for energy flux and its dissipation, which can be used to explore the interaction between tide and river from an energy perspective. It has been shown that the potential energy flux is dominant over the kinetic energy flux, and the energy contribution made by tide-river interaction is negligible compared with that due to tidal flow and freshwater discharge. A critical position corresponding with zero energy flux can be identified, reflecting a balance between along-channel tidal amplitude and residual water level. Assuming the variation of system energy tends to zero, we derive the long-term equilibrium bed profile with a convex-up shape, where we identify the location of a second estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) at a position determined by the balance between river- and tide-induced energy flux. The dynamic response of tidal propagation extent and critical position with zero energy flux are shown to adjust to reflect seasonal changes towards the formation of a bed profile that is in dynamic equilibrium. Key policy insights: A new analytical method is derived to calculate energy transport and energy dissipation in river-tide estuaries. Equilibrium bed profile determined by minimum entropy production has a convex-up shape where the minimum depth coincides with the location of zero along-channel energy flux. Shear spinning is a bulk forming technique used to produce hollow, rotationally symmetric parts. Although the shear spinning process has been used for the last six decades in numerous industries, in the literature, the understanding of the mechanics of the process is limited. This study provides insight into process mechanics using physical trials and numerical models. Modelling the process is challenging because of the incremental nature of the process; existing numerical models in the literature suffer from lengthy computational times and simplifications. In this study, two numerical models with different approaches to the kinematics of the spinning process are modelled with input from tests to determine friction coefficient and material properties. Then they are validated against physical trials by comparing both part geometry and strain distribution. Validated numerical models are then employed to investigate the fundamental aspects of shear spinning mechanics; evolution of strains, roller forces and part geometry in a broad range of process conditions. Twisted and coiled polymer actuator (TCPA) is a type of artificial muscle that can be driven by heating due to its structure. A key issue with TCPA performance is the low driven frequency due to slow heat transfer in heating and cooling cycles, especially during cooling. We developed a numerical model of coating heating and nitrogen gas cooling that can effectively improve the driven forces and frequencies of the TCPA. Results indicate that natural cooling and electric fan cooling modes used in many experiments cannot restore the TCPA to its initial configuration when driven frequencies are high. Nitrogen gas cooling, at high driven frequencies, can fully restore the TCPA to its initial configuration, which is crucial for maintaining artificial muscle flexibility. In addition, as driven frequency increases, the corresponding driven force decreases. Systematic parametric studies were carried out to provide inspirations for optimizing TCPA design. The integrative computational study presented here provides a fundamental mechanistic understanding of the driven response in TCPA and sheds light on the rational design of TCPA through changing cooling modes. Traditional methods for wrinkled tubes involve welding processes and additional elements, such as plates, screws, rivets, and guides. Considering all the limitations of these processes, this work aims to propose a methodology that allows for maximising the manufacturing process of carbon steel tube joints with seaming using cold forming and minimising the cost of the final product. Therefore, the present work aims to develop a computational model, based on the finite element method, to optimise the deformation process of T6 Aluminium tubes (ø 45 × ø 38.6 mm) with a length of 120 mm. The method uses a steel die with cavities to achieve wrinkled tubes by a forming process. This numerical study was carried out using the Ansys® 2022 R2 software. A nonlinear material and an incremental structural analysis were used. The applied methodology allowed the optimisation of process parameters, the application of forces during tube deformation, the geometry of the die cavity, boundary conditions, and mesh discretisation. Numerical modelling was carried out using the axial symmetry of the assembly (tube–die), enabling a simplified and efficient execution of the final tube geometry. The results were analysed based on the maximum pressure applied to the tube, and the vertical and horizontal displacements of the deformed component, thus obtaining the tube flow with complete filling inside the die cavity at the end of deformation. The die geometry that produced the best results presented a cavity with a radius of curvature of 3 mm, 6 mm in height, and with a depth of 4 mm. The optimised result of the die geometry generated satisfactory results, with the displacement on the x-axis of the tube of approximately 2.85 mm, ensuring the filling of the cavity at the end of the process. This study investigates the influence of various transverse reinforcement configurations on the torsional performance of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) reinforced concrete beams. A comprehensive experimental investigation includes five specimens, each characterized by unique transverse reinforcement designs in terms of stirrup spacing and inclination angles. The implementation of transverse torsional reinforcements within the beams exhibited a remarkable post-cracking hardening response, contributing to enhanced strength recovery. The experimental findings are subsequently compared with a reliable three-dimensional finite element model developed using the ABAQUS software. Finally, a parametric study is conducted to examine the influence of concrete and GFRP bar strength, along with longitudinal and transverse reinforcement ratios, on the torsional behavior of GFRP reinforced concrete beams. The results emphasize the significant impact of concrete tensile strength and transverse reinforcement on the cracking torque, while the parameters related to longitudinal reinforcement have only marginal effects. Cloud condensation and hydrometeor evaporation fractionate stable isotopes of water, enriching liquid with heavy isotopes; whereupon updrafts, downdrafts, and rain vertically redistribute water and its isotopes in the lower troposphere. These vertical water fluxes through the marine boundary layer affect low cloud climate feedback and, combined with isotope fractionation, are hypothesized to explain the depletion of tropical precipitation at higher precipitation rates known as the "amount effect." Here, an efficient and numerically stable quasi‐analytical model simulates the evaporation of raindrops and enrichment of their isotope composition. It is applied to a drop size distribution and subcloud environment representative of Atlantic trade cumulus clouds. Idealized physics experiments artificially zero out selected processes to discern the separate effects on the isotope ratio of raindrops, of exchange with the environment, evaporation, and kinetic molecular diffusion. A parameterization of size‐dependent molecular and eddy diffusion is formulated that enriches raindrops much more strongly (+5‰ for deuterated water [HDO] and +3.5‰ for H218 ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}^{18}$O) than equilibrium evaporation as they become smaller than 1 mm. The effect on evaporated vapor is also assessed. Rain evaporation enriches subcloud vapor by +12‰ per mm rain (for HDO), explaining observations of enriched vapor in cold pools sourced by evaporatively cooled downdrafts. Drops smaller than 0.5 mm evaporate completely before falling 700 m in typical subtropical marine boundary layer conditions. The early and complete evaporation of these smaller drops in the rain size distribution enriches the vapor produced by rain evaporation. Plain Language Summary: Heavy water isotopes, whose hydrogen or oxygen atoms hold an extra neutron or two, condense more and evaporate less than the common water isotope (H216 ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}^{16}$O). Variations of those heavy isotopes in precipitation tell a story about present weather conditions and how climate has changed in the past. Records of rainfall that fell to the surface are affected by the exchanges between vapor and rain as it evaporates below the clouds. Here, a simple model of evaporating rain explains how the amount of heavy isotopes in rain changes between the cloud and the surface. The fraction of heavy isotopes changes because they evaporate less, yet also because the heavy water molecules diffuse away from evaporating raindrops more slowly than the lighter water molecules. One notable prediction of our model is that this molecular diffusion causes larger changes in small raindrops than previously thought, especially as they approach complete evaporation. These variations have been observed near Barbados in "cold pools"—gusts of air, cooled by the evaporation of rain, spreading out across the surface. A ready-to-use numerical model has been developed for the atomic ladder (cascade) systems which are widely exploited in Rydberg Radio Frequency (RF) sensors. The model has been explicitly designed for user convenience and to be extensible to arbitrary N-level non-thermal systems. The versatility and adaptability of the model is validated up to 4-level atomic systems by direct comparison with experimental results from the prior art. The numerical model provides a good approximation to the experimental results and provides experimentalists with a convenient ready-to-use model to optimise the operation of an N-level Rydberg RF sensor. Current sensors exploit the 4-level atomic systems based on alkali metal atoms which require visible frequency lasers and these can be expensive and also suffer from high attenuation within optical fiber. The rate of spontaneous action potentials (APs) generated by sinoatrial node cells (SANC) is regulated by local Ca2+ release (LCR) from the sarcoplasmic reticulum via Ca2+ release channels (ryanodine receptors, RyRs). LCR events propagate and self-organize within the network of RyR clusters (Ca release units, CRUs) via Ca-induced-Ca-release (CICR) that depends on CRU sizes and locations: While larger CRUs generate stronger release signals, the network's topology governs signal diffusion and propagation. This study used super-resolution structured illumination microscopy to image the 3D network of CRUs in rabbit SANC. The peripheral CRUs formed a spatial mesh, reflecting the cell surface geometry. Two distinct subpopulations of CRUs were identified within each cell, with size distributions conforming to a two-component Gamma mixture model. Furthermore, neighboring CRUs exhibited repulsive behavior. Functional properties of the CRU network were further examined in a novel numerical SANC model developed using our experimental data. Model simulations revealed that heterogeneities in both CRU sizes and locations facilitate CICR and increase the AP firing rate in a cooperative manner. However, these heterogeneities reduce the effect of β-adrenergic stimulation in terms of its relative change in AP firing rate. The presence of heterogeneities in both sizes and locations allows SANC to reach higher absolute AP firing rates during β-adrenergic stimulation. Thus, the CICR facilitation by heterogeneities in CRU sizes and locations regulates and optimizes cardiac pacemaker cell operation under various physiological conditions. A scientific and reasonable microseismic monitoring sensor network is crucial for the prevention and control of rockmass instability disasters. In this study, three feasible sensor network layout schemes for the microseismic monitoring of Sanshandao Gold Mine were proposed, comprehensively considering factors such as orebody orientation, tunnel and stope distributions, blasting excavation areas, construction difficulty, and maintenance costs. To evaluate and validate the monitoring effectiveness of the sensor networks, three layers of seismic sources were randomly generated within the network. Four levels of random errors were added to the calculated arrival time data, and the classical Geiger localization algorithm was used for locating validation. The distribution of localization errors within the monitoring area was analyzed. The results indicate that when the arrival time data are accurate or the error is between 0% and 2%, scheme 3 is considered the most suitable layout; when the error of the arrival time data is between 2% and 10%, scheme 2 is considered the optimal layout. These research results can provide important theoretical and technical guidance for the reasonable design of microseismic monitoring systems in similar mines or projects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deformation predictions in high Concrete Face Rockfill Dams tend to underestimate observed settlements due to scale effect and breakage phenomena that cannot be adequately captured by laboratory tests. This paper presents a Visco-Elasto-Perfectly Plastic (VEPP) model for predicting deformations in high Concrete Face Rockfill Dams (CFRDs) that addresses these challenges incorporating explicitly key rockfill parameters like grain size and post-compaction porosity, which influence both the non-linear elastic and plastic behaviors of rockfill. The VEPP model enables deformation prediction while using standard laboratory test results. The model's effectiveness was demonstrated through its application to the 233 m high Shuibuya Dam, the tallest CFRD in the world. The VEPP model predictions closely align with observed deformations throughout the dam's construction, impoundment, and early operational stages. By using physically meaningful parameters, the model reduces the uncertainty associated with the empirical assessment of model parameters using back-analysis from similar projects. While the VEPP model offers improved predictive accuracy, particularly during early design phases, further advancements could be achieved by refining the creep formulation and accounting for grain size evolution during construction. Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the production of complex geometries that are not accessible by conventional processes. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing is an important choice for many industries, particularly for additive manufacturing of microelectronic systems. The various physical properties of printing polymer materials, such as geometry, rheological behavior, and others, need to be taken into account in the printing process. In our study, a semi-crystalline polypropylene polymer PP is used in the FDM process, as it is characterized by deformability due to crystallization. We investigate the thermomechanical behavior of a semi-crystalline polymer PP (polypropylene) with different material deposition geometries ranging from a parallelepiped filament to a cylindrical filament in a numerical model developed. A coupling (to temperature vs. time evolution during printing) of solid mechanics, heat transfer, and crystallization kinetics equations was considered to build the Multiphysics numerical model capable of predicting temperature profiles, residual stresses, and degree of crystallization during the FDM process. The results obtained with the numerical model provide a reliable approach to predicting and adjusting the actual thermomechanical behavior of a printed electronics package. The values are calculated and compared to the six points in the two samples. The results show that the change in deposit shape resulted in a maximum deviation of 3.3 MPa for residual stress and 0.376 for the degree of crystallization, while a decrease was observed in the selected points with an average deviation of 1.81 MPa and 0.193 for residual stress and the degree of crystallization, respectively. This is due to the effects of the modification of the shape model on the temperature profile model, with the change in the 3D structures of the printed polymer material; the methodology presented in this paper allows the numerical model to be validated with an experimental study of the literature.
