Abstract

In this study, the MgO-coated graphene nanoplatelets (GNP)-reinforced aluminum matrix AlSi10Mg composites are fabricated by mechanical alloying and a 3D printing process. The interfacial structure of GNPs–Al has been investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and their strengthening mechanism has been analyzed. A weak amorphous Al2O3 was found at the GNP–Al interface area in the composites made with uncoated GNPs. The structure of amorphous Al2O3 becomes distorted when load transfer is initiated, causing the detachment of GNPs from the matrix. This results in quick failure at the interface between uncoated GNPs and aluminum, restricting its overall strength. Once GNPs are coated with MgO, an Al/C mixing zone forms at the contact area, resulting in increased interface strength. The MgO coating on the GNP serves as a protective barrier, preventing the creation of a weaker amorphous Al2O3 layer at the interface and facilitating direct interaction between the GNP and Al matrix. The stress–strain curve demonstrates a 27.5% enhancement in tensile strength in the MgO-coated GNP–Al composite compared to the composite with uncoated GNPs. The strength is increased while maintaining toughness through load transmission of GNPs, bridging, and enhancing dislocation storage capacity by the Mg-rich phase. 36. Characterisation of four-layered Al-Al2O3functionally graded material prepared through powder metallurgy and pressureless sintering

Abstract

In this research study, four-layered aluminium-aluminium oxide (Al-Al2O3) functionally graded material (FGM) was prepared through powder metallurgy (PM) route considering 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% weight percentage of ceramic concentration. The sintering temperature and time used are 620°C and 120 min following two-step sintering cycle. The prepared FGM samples were characterised by densification and shrinkage. Microstructural and elemental analyses were carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Mechanical characterisation was carried out using Vickers microhardness tests. It was observed that cylindrical FGM specimens (green compact) were successfully prepared and diameter of cylindrical structure was decreased after sintering process. It was also observed that there was no existence of macro-crack or micro-crack within the individual layer or at the interface and smooth transition occurred from one layer to next layer. Elemental analyses confirmed the gradient distribution of material composition layer by layer.

Abstract

Whenever two or more dissimilar materials are bonded, large jump in the stresses occurred at the interface during the fabrication will leads to the delamination and poor load-bearing performance on the final structures. Functionally graded material (FGM) which has compositional and microstructure gradient along its thickness was introduced to be a great solution to this problem. Aiming for the best technique to be implemented, this paper presents an extensive review on the various fabrication techniques of FGMs composed by metallic and ceramic phases. Fabrication techniques in this field of work have incorporated many concepts from different background of gradation processes and consolidation or sintering processes. Each of these processes however has their own advantages and disadvantages. The best technique to be applied can be found by considering some critical issues highlighted in published literatures. This review concluded the powder metallurgy (PM) as the most suitable technique certainly for mass production and up-scaling of the FGMs. The selection was strengthen after considering the advantages of the technique such as process cost-effectiveness, reliability of the practical implementation of the process and the high capability of the process to control the quality of the FGMs.

50. Comparative Study between Analytical Method and Finite Element Method of a Cylindrical Bore Journal Bearing Behaviour

Abstract

This thesis describes a comparative study between analytical method and finite element method of a cylindrical bore journal bearing behaviour. In calculating the performance characteristics of a journal bearing such as pressure distribution, load capacity, flow requirement and power loss, isothermal analysis was carried out. Using both analytical method and finite element method, the effects of variations in operating variables such as eccentricity ratio and shaft speed on the bearing design parameters were calculated. With regard to CPU time, analytical method performs better than finite element method; but in terms of obtained results, finite element method shows better performance than analytical method. The analytical results and finite element results are compared. In order to check the validity, when these results are compared with the available published results, on the whole, finite element results show better agreement than analytical results.
