Objective: Micronutrient status, specifically vitamin D and iron, represent modifiable factors for optimizing military readiness. The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine associations between micronutrient deficiency (i.e., iron status and 25-hydroxy-vitamin D [25(OH)D]) and operationally relevant outcomes (i.e., skeletal health, musculoskeletal injury) at baseline and post-10 weeks of arduous military training. Methods: A total of 227 (177 men, 50 women) Marine Officer Candidates School (OCS) candidates who completed OCS training with complete data sets were included in this analysis. Vitamin D and iron status indicators were collected at two timepoints, pre (baseline) and post OCS. Musculoskeletal outcomes at the mid- and proximal tibial diaphysis were assessed via peripheral quantitative computed tomography. Results: Micronutrient status declined following OCS training in men and women and was associated with musculoskeletal outcomes including greater bone strength (strength strain index) at the mid-diaphysis site in those with optimal status (M = 38.26 mm3, SE = 15.59) versus those without (M = −8.03 mm3, SE = 17.27). In women (p =.037), endosteal circumference was greater in the deficient group (M = 53.26 mm, SE = 1.19) compared with the optimal group (M = 49.47 mm, SE = 1.31) at the proximal diaphysis. In men, greater baseline hepcidin concentrations were associated with an increased likelihood of suffering musculoskeletal injury during training. Conclusions: Vitamin D and iron status declined over the course of training, suggesting impaired micronutrient status. Differences in musculoskeletal outcomes by micronutrient group suggests optimal vitamin D and ferritin concentrations may exert beneficial effects on bone fatigability and fracture reduction during military training. Purpose: This study investigated sex differences in self-reported causes, symptoms, and recovery strategies associated with underperformance in endurance athletes. Methods: A total of 82 athletes (40 women) meeting the inclusion criteria (performance level ≥tier 3, used training diaries, and experienced 1 or more periods of underperformance during their career) completed an online questionnaire. The questionnaire encompassed inquiries regarding load monitoring and experiences with underperformance, focusing on causes, symptoms, and recovery strategies. Results: The most frequently reported symptoms associated with underperformance included psychological (31%), physiological (23%), and health-related (12%) symptoms. Notably, female athletes were more likely to report psychological symptoms associated with underperformance (38% vs 25%, P =.01) compared with male athletes. The leading causes of underperformance comprised illness (21%), mental/emotional challenges (20%), training errors (12%), lack of recovery (10%), and nutritional challenges (5%). Female athletes reported nutritional challenges more frequently as the cause of underperformance compared with males (9% vs 1%, P =.01), whereas male athletes more often attributed underperformance to training errors (15% vs 9%, P =.03). Overall, 67% of athletes reported recovering from underperformance, with a tendency for more male than female athletes to recover (76% vs 58%, P =.07). Furthermore, a higher proportion of male than female athletes reported implementing changes in the training process as a recovery strategy (62% vs 35%, P =.02). Conclusions: This study offers valuable insights into sex differences in experiences with underperformance in endurance athletes. Large-scale food fortification (LSFF) can increase dietary micronutrient intake and improve micronutrient status. Here we used food balance sheet data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to estimate current country-specific prevalences of inadequate zinc intake. We assessed the potential effects of improving existing LSFF programmes for cereal grains or implementing new programmes in 40 countries where zinc deficiency is a potential public health problem. Accounting for LSFF programmes as currently implemented, 15% of the global population (1.13 billion individuals) is estimated to have inadequate zinc intake. In countries where zinc deficiency is a potential public health problem, the implementation of high-quality mandatory LSFF programmes that include zinc as a fortificant would substantially increase the availability of zinc in the national food supply, reducing the estimated prevalence of inadequate zinc intake by up to 50% globally. Investments in strong LSFF programmes could have a substantial impact on population zinc status.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional impairment is associated with treatment toxicity and worse overall survival in patients with cancer. We aimed to (1) evaluate the association of nutritional impairment with psychological health and quality of life (QOL) and (2) examine which measures of nutrition had the strongest association with psychological health and QOL among older adults receiving cancer treatment with palliative intent. METHODS: This secondary analysis was performed on baseline data from a nationwide cluster randomized clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02107443; PI: Mohile). Adults age ≥70 with advanced cancer and ≥1 geriatric assessment (GA) impairment were enrolled from 2014 to 2017. In line with geriatric oncology standards, we defined nutritional impairment as Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF) ≤11, body mass index (BMI) 10% involuntary weight loss in the past 6 months. We conducted multivariable linear regressions to evaluate the association of nutritional impairment with each measure of psychological health and QOL: Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15, range 0-15), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7, range 0-21), NCCN Distress Thermometer (NCCN DT, range 0-10), and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G, range 0-108). Analyses were adjusted for patient demographics, clinical characteristics, and GA. RESULTS: Among 541 patients, the mean age was 77 (range 70-96) and 60% had nutritional impairment. Mean baseline scores: GDS-15 3.1 (SD 2.7), GAD-7 2.9 (SD 4.0), NCCN DT 2.9 (SD 2.7), and FACT-G 80 (SD 15). In the adjusted model, compared to those with no nutritional impairment, older adults with nutritional impairment had greater depression (β = 0.79, 95% CI 0.36-1.23) and anxiety severity (β = 0.86, 95% CI 0.19-1.53), and worse QOL (β = -6.31, 95% CI -8.62 to -4.00). Of the measures of nutrition, MNA-SF ≤11 demonstrated the strongest associations with depression, anxiety, distress, and QOL. CONCLUSION: Nutritional impairment is associated with impaired psychological health and worse QOL. Clinicians should use the MNA-SF to screen older adults for nutritional impairment and offer tailored supportive interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Micronutrient deficiencies are prevalent in West Africa, particularly among women of reproductive age (WRA) and young children. Bouillon is a promising food fortification vehicle due to its widespread consumption. This study aims to evaluate the impact of multiple micronutrient-fortified bouillon cubes, compared to control bouillon cubes (fortified with iodine only), on micronutrient status and hemoglobin concentrations among lactating and non-lactating WRA and young children in northern Ghana. METHODS: This randomized, controlled doubly-masked trial will be conducted in the Kumbungu and Tolon districts in the Northern Region of Ghana, where prior data indicate multiple micronutrient deficiencies are common. Participants will be: 1) non-pregnant non-lactating WRA (15-49 y), 2) children 2-5 y, and 3) non-pregnant lactating women 4-18 months postpartum. Eligible participants will be randomly assigned to receive household rations of one of two types of bouillon cubes: 1) a multiple micronutrient-fortified bouillon cube containing vitamin A, folic acid, vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and iodine, or 2) a control cube containing iodine only. Each participants household will receive a ration of bouillon cubes every 2 weeks, and households will be advised to prepare meals as usual, using the study-provided cubes. The trial duration will be 9 months for non-pregnant non-lactating WRA and children, and 3 months for lactating women. The primary outcomes will be changes in biomarkers of micronutrient status and hemoglobin among WRA and children and milk micronutrient concentrations among lactating women. Secondary outcomes will include change in prevalence of micronutrient deficiency and anemia; dietary intake of bouillon and micronutrients; inflammation, malaria, and morbidity symptoms; and child growth and development. DISCUSSION: Evidence from this study will inform discussions about bouillon fortification in Ghana and West Africa. Background: The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) is an integrated index of serum albumin and peripheral lymphocyte count, where low values may reflect poor nutritional status or inflammation. The long-term effect of PNI on renal function is not well known in the general population. Therefore, we investigated whether the PNI is related to renal function changes in the general population. Methods: Data from participants who underwent a health check-up between 2002 and 2018 were retrospectively examined. PNI was computed by 10×serum albumin (g/dL) + 0.005×total lymphocyte count (per mm3). The primary exposure was PNI, divided into quintiles. The primary outcome was a 25% decline in eGFR from baseline over a 5-year follow-up period. Results: This study included 15,437 participants (mean [standard deviation, SD] age, 43.7 [7.9] years; 46% male). The median (interquartile ranges) 5-year change of eGFR was − 5.2 (− 18.8, − 3.3) mL/min/1.73m2. A total of 2,272 participants (14.7%) experienced a 25% decline in eGFR at 5 years. Compared to the highest PNI group, lower PNI groups were at greater risk for a 25% decline in eGFR; odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were 1.42 (1.20, 1.68), 1.23 (1.04, 1.45), 1.21 (1.03, 1.43), and 1.19 (1.01, 1.40) for the first to fourth quintiles of PNI, respectively. In linear regression analyses, lower PNI groups also showed a larger decline in eGFR over 5 years compared to the highest PNI group. The purpose of the study was to determine how well the school lunch program affected students' dietary needs and academic performance. It took place at Tagpaco Elementary School in the 2022-2023 school year. To collect the necessary data, the study used an experimental research design. The weighted mean, standard deviation, and standard t-test were applied to the study's problem statement. According to the results, there was a substantial difference in the learners' Body Mass Index (BMI) before and after being exposed to the feeding program. The Body Mass Index (BMI) and academic achievement of the study's participants had no discernible association. Therefore, this suggested that there were other factors that affected the academic performance of the learners other than the Body Mass Index (BMI). It was important also to note that a weak positive correlation may still exist, but it was not strong enough to be statistically significant. It was recommended to continue the conduct of the feeding program and plan even more meals that were nutritious for learners who were subjected to school feeding. The school administration should continue to look forward to potential sponsors that would help the school in sustaining the feeding program. Background: Undernutrition, manifested as stunting and/or thinness, is a major public health concern in low-income countries, including Ethiopia. Factors such as sociodemographic, economic, and dietary status influence children's academic achievement. This study aimed to assess the association between dietary diversity, nutritional status, and academic performance of school-age children in pastoral communities in Southeast Ethiopia. Methods: A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 395 randomly selected school-age children. A multistage sampling followed by systematic random sampling was used to collect the data. Students' academic performance (AP) was evaluated by computing two-semester average grade scores of the 2016/17 academic year in all disciplines using the school record. A pre-tested, interviewer-administered, structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. To assess nutritional status, the z scores of height for age (HAZ) and BMI for age (BAZ) were employed according to WHO's new reference values. The WHO Anthroplus software was used to generate nutritional indices. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to examine the direct, indirect, and total effects of the dietary diversity score (DDS), HAZ score, and BAZ score on AP. The beta coefficient (β) along with the confidence interval (CI) were used to estimate the strength of the association. Results: The prevalence of stunting and thinness was 26.6% (95% CI: 21.8, 31.4%) and 28.9% (95% CI: 24.3, 33.2%), respectively. The proportion of dietary diversity (DD) among school-age children was 40% (95% CI: 35.7, 45.3%) low DD and 60% (95% CI: 54.7, 64.3%) adequate DD. The SEM revealed that a unit increment in the child's DDS (unstandardised β = 0.130, 95% CI: 0.049 to 0.211) did have direct and total effects on the HAZ score. However, HAZ score, BAZ score, and DDS did not have direct, indirect, or total effects on AP. Similarly, DDS did not have direct or total effects on the BAZ score. Conclusion: The academic performance (AP) was low among these school-age children, and the prevalence of stunting and thinness was high. Background: Effect of education attainment and nutritional status on the development of cognitive impairment in Chinese elderly has not been reported. Objective: To investigate the role of education and nutrition in preventing cognitive impairment in the hospitalized Chinese elderly. Methods: Cognitive function was examined using the scoring system of Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) domains performed under instruction of Physicians of Geriatrics. Generalized linear mixed-effect regression was used for analyzing the association of demographic factors (age and gender), socioeconomic factors (education attainment and monthly income), as well as health-related factors (nutritional status, comorbidity, anxiety, and depression) and MMSE scores. Results: Total 246 hospitalized Chinese elders were enrolled into this study. Of them, 96 participants were 60–70 years old, 65 participants were 71–80 years old, and 85 of them were 81 years or older. Of the examined factors, we found that age, education attainment, and nutritional status were significantly associated with the outcome of MMSE scores, while monthly income and health condition (comorbidity, anxiety, and depression) were not significantly associated with MMSE score. Furthermore, education attainment was significantly associated with majority of the MMSE domains, including orientation, registration, attention and calculation, recall, and most of language sub-domains. Conclusion: Education attainment and nutritional status were significantly associated with MMSE scores in the hospitalized Chinese elderly. This study aimed to reveal the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizae and K-humate on some of the morphological characteristics and growth of Russian olive (RO; Elaeagnus angustifolia L.) and black locust (BL; Robinia pseudoacacia L.). The indigenous mycorrhizal spores (Claroideoglomus claroideum, Claroideoglomus etunicatum, Claroideoglomus luteum, and Funneliformis mosseae) collected from rhizospheres of RO and BL trees in afforestation sites located in Central Anatolia. In addition, commercial mycorrhizal mixture and K-humate were used as treatments. Five treatments (1—indigenous mycorrhizal fungi, 2—K-humate, 3—indigenous mycorrhizal fungi + K-humate, 4—commercial mycorrhizal fungi, and 5—control) were assigned in a completely randomized design for both tree species. Four months after the treatments, inoculation rate, above-ground seedling height, fresh and dry weight, root collar diameter, length, fresh, and dry weight, leaf area index, shot-to-root dry weight ratio, seedling height to root collar diameter ratio, and Dickson quality index were determined. Plant and soil analyses were carried out to determine the effects of treatments on plant and soil nutrition. Indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and K-humate combinations had positive effects on the morphological characteristics and nutritional status of the seedlings. Background: Gestational weight gain (GWG) is a critical issue related to postpartum health in newborns and mothers. In Brazil, pregnant women's public health recommends monitoring GWG. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate gestational weight gain and associated health factors of pregnant women monitored at Unified Health System (SUS) in the city of São Paulo between 2012 and 2020. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of pregnant women seen from 2012 to 2020 in São Paulo, Brazil. The database used was from the Integrated Health Care Management System related to the Live Birth Information System. Data distribution was assessed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Comparisons between groups according to weight gain (LWG vs. AWG vs. EWG) were performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey post hoc. Inclusion criteria considered that pregnant women had a recorded initial weight before 13 weeks and up to 15 days before delivery and a single pregnancy. The final database includes 276.220 pregnant women. Results: The frequency of women according to initial body mass index (BMI) was 12.004 (4.4%) underweight, 132.049 (48.3%) normal weight, 78.856 (28.8%) overweight, and 50.660 (18.5%) living with obesity. The population consisted of 59.881 (21.9%), 37.217 (13.6%) and 176.471 (64.5%) women with LWG, AWG and EWG, respectively. Weight gain was associated with initial BMI, type of birth, color/ethnicity, marital status, women's age and antenatal care visits. Conclusion: The proportion of pregnant women with inadequate weight gain is high, relating initial BMI, type of birth, color/ethnicity, marital status, women's age and antenatal care visits. Background: A comprehensive understanding of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on childhood nutrition is crucial for devising effective mitigation strategies. However, existing knowledge regarding the pandemic's effect on childhood nutritional status remains limited. Furthermore, research focusing on young children aged 0–3 years is scarce. Methods: Leveraging the outbreak that originated in Wuhan in Dec 2019, the epicenter of China's first and largest outbreak, and national survey and statistical yearbook data, this study conducted a natural experimental analysis with the consideration of geographical exposure, temporal exposure and survey cohort effects to investigate the pandemic's impacts on varying nutritional indicators of infants and toddlers aged 0–36 months. A comprehensive set of sensitivity analyses, robustness checks and falsification tests were conducted. The potential heterogeneities across socioeconomic and age groups were also examined. Results: The pandemic was robustly predictive of a higher weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) and length/height-for-age z-score (HAZ), and a lower likelihood of underweight. The effects of the pandemic on increasing WAZ and reducing underweight were more pronounced among children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds or aged 0–12 months. Additionally, the increasing HAZ was primarily among children from households with lower family income. Moreover, the pandemic was negatively linked to the body mass index (BMI)-for-age z-score (BAZ) of children residing in more developed cities, and positively linked to overweight/obesity among children aged 13–24 months. Conclusions: This study adds to a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on childhood nutrition. Notably, the findings highlight that weight gain attributable to the pandemic was predominantly among vulnerable children from disadvantaged backgrounds and younger age groups, who were already at a higher risk of overweight/obesity before the pandemic. Consequently, our findings imply the necessity of greater caution to the widened gap in childhood malnutrition post-pandemic. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of implementing adaptable strategies with the consideration of social justice to safeguard all children's right to optimal growth from exogenous shocks and to achieve the children-related SDGs by 2030. Background: Patients with gastrointestinal cancer have a higher risk of malnutrition and postoperative infection. Objective: To investigate the nutritional status of patients with gastrointestinal cancers and factors for postoperative infections. Method: Based on the nutritional risk status, 294 patients with gastrointestinal tumours were divided into a nutritional risk group and a non-nutritional risk group, and the differences between the two groups were compared. Results: Among the included patients, 128 were at preoperative nutritional risk (43.54%); there were significant differences between the two groups in terms of age (66.25 ± 11.73 vs. 58.36 ± 10.41 years, P < 0.001), percentage of gastric cancers (39.84% vs. 28.92%, P = 0.049), percentage of stage IV tumours (60.16% vs. 45.18%, P = 0.011), total protein (64.90 ± 6.82 vs. 67.21 ± 7.41 g/L, P = 0.007), albumin (38.32 ± 4.74 vs. 41.61 ± 5.10 g/L, P < 0.001) and haemoglobin (112.72 ± 22.63 vs. 125.11 ± 22.79 g/L, P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that risk factors for postoperative infections in patients included age ≥ 60 years (odds ratio [OR] = 2.266 95%CI = 1.357–4.134), Nutrition Risk Screening (NRS)-2002 score ≥ 3 (OR = 2.183, 95%CI = 1.218–4.102), alcohol history (OR = 2.505, 95%CI = 1.370–4.683), comorbid diabetes mellitus (OR = 2.110, 95%CI = 1.381–4.023) and surgical time ≥ 6 h (OR = 2.446, 95%CI = 1.359–4.758). Conclusion: Patients with gastrointestinal cancers are at high incidence of preoperative nutritional risk, and those with an NRS-2002 score of > 3, history of alcohol consumption and surgical time of > 6 h have a higher risk of postoperative infections. Objective: Our study was conducted to explore the link between oxidative balance score (OBS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: A total of 21,415 participants were included in our research from five cycles (2011–2012, 2013–2014, 2015–2016, 2017–2018, and 2017–2020) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Moreover, 20 elements related to diet as well as lifestyle were combined to calculate OBS. The relationship between OBS and RA was assessed by employing multivariable regression analysis, and further exploration was carried out through subgroup analysis, restricted cubic spline analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Multiple covariates were selected to adjust the model for more robust results. Results: In our cross-sectional study, a higher OBS has a protective effect on the development of RA (OR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.97 to 0.99). In contrast to individuals aged ≥60, the result is more prominent in the population aged 20–60 (OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.96 to 0.98). Marital status appears to introduce interference in the relationship between OBS and RA, and unmarried individuals exhibited different outcomes (OR = 1.02, 95% CI: 0.99 to 1.04) compared to others. The positive influence of OBS was more evident in patients with chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, while it was stronger in individuals without diabetes and liver disease. Conclusion: A higher OBS correlates with a reduced odd of RA. Further studies are needed to shoot more sights on improving dietary habits and lifestyles to gain proper OBS and explore whether OBS can be one of the measurements utilized to measure the risk of RA. Introduction and Purpose: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a prevalent cardiac rhythm disorder that significantly impacts global health. Emerging evidence suggests that dietary habits play a crucial role in the modulation and management of AF. This review article aims to synthesize current knowledge on the interplay between nutrition and atrial fibrillation, providing insights for healthcare professionals and patients alike in managing this condition through dietary choices. State of Knowledge: Various studies have examined the effects of specific nutrients, food groups, and dietary patterns on the incidence and progression of AF. This review delves into research linking macro- and micronutrients--such as omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and antioxidants--to AF risk. It also evaluates the influence of dietary patterns, including Mediterranean and plant-based diets, on the electrical and structural remodeling of the heart that predisposes to AF. Additionally, the impact of excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption on AF is scrutinized, highlighting the importance of moderation. Summary: The evidence indicates a significant association between diet and atrial fibrillation, suggesting that specific dietary modifications could potentially reduce AF risk or mitigate its severity. Recommendations for clinical practice involve promoting heart-healthy dietary patterns, focusing on the balance and quality of nutrients, while considering individual dietary restrictions and preferences. Objective To observe the effect of preoperative enteral nutritional support combined with modified Ivor-Lewis surgery for esophageal cancer on lung function and mRNA expression of GATA-binding protein 3 (GATA3) and forkhead protein P3 (Foxp3) in peripheral blood. Methods Sixty esophageal cancer patients who underwent modified Ivor-Lewis surgery in our hospital from January 2022 to October 2023 were selected and divided into two groups by simple random method. The control group was given conventional diet before operation, and the observation group was given enteral nutrition support before operation. The two groups were compared in terms of nutritional support. Results Both groups showed significantly decreases in one-second exertion expiratory volume/exertion lung volume (FEV1IFVC) (P < 0.05), FVC (P < 0.05 ), FEV1 (P < 0.05) and the levels of peripheral blood GATA3 (P < 0.05), Foxp3 mRNA (P < 0.05) expression compared with those at admission (P < 0.05), but no significant differences in pulmonary function (P > 0.05), peripheral blood GATA3 (P > 0.05), and Foxp3 mRNA (P > 0.05) expression between them at 1 week postoperatively. Both groups exhibited significantly lower levels of albumin, prealbumin, haemoglobin, transferrin, PNI and body mass and body mass index at admission as compared to those at one week after surgery (P < 0.05). The observation group showed significantly higher levels of albumin, prealbumin, haemoglobin, transferrin, and PNI at 1 week postoperatively (P < 0.05), but no significant differences in ventilation time, defecation time, drain retention time, hospitalisation time, and complication rate as compared to the control group (P > 0.05). Conclusion Preoperative enteral nutritional support combined with modified Ivor-Lewis surgery for esophageal cancer improves postoperative nutritional status, and renders less effect on postoperative lung function and peripheral blood GATA3 and Foxp3 mRNA expression. Introduction: Africa's older population is increasing and this, necessitates the development of interventions to promote healthy ageing. Nutrition is a key determinant of healthy ageing and local contextual evidence is needed to inform nutritional intervention development in Africa. There are already reviews on nutritional status and food insecurity in older adults in Africa. However, a synthesis of nutrition interventions targeting older people specifically, is lacking. Therefore, this protocol describes a scoping review that aims to systematically synthesise current evidence on nutrition interventions for older people in Africa. Methods: The review will involve: a review of available reviews on nutrition in older people in Africa (Phase 1); a review of nutrition interventions developed or implemented among older people in Africa (Phase 2); and consultation with local nutrition stakeholders in Zimbabwe, and The Gambia to contextualise Phase 1 and 2 findings and solicit insights not in the published literature (Phase 3). Searches for Phases 1 and 2 will include bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, African Journals Online, African Index Medicus) and grey literature sources (i.e. relevant websites). Title, abstract, and full-text screening will be conducted in duplicate, data extracted using piloted tools and findings summarised using descriptive statistics and narrative text. Phase 3 will be conducted using hybrid workshops, audio-recorded, detailed notes taken, and findings combined with those from Phases 1 and 2. Conclusion: The findings of this review will summarise current evidence on nutrition in older people in Africa and inform nutrition intervention development. The findings will be presented in conferences, meetings, and published open access. This study assesses the associations between nutritional status and cognitive development of schoolchildren. A unit increase in height-for-age Z-score was associated with 0.12 SD, 0.08 SD and 0.12 SD increase in standardized digit span, Raven’s colored progressive metrics, and performance index of visual search task, respectively. A unit increase in body-mass-index-for-age Z-score was associated with 0.11 SD increase in standardized digit span. Hemoglobin concentration was not associated with any of the cognitive outcomes. Chronic malnutrition was associated with cognitive development in schoolchildren while thinness and hemoglobin concentrations were associated with selected or no cognitive outcomes, respectively. Spatial heterogeneity and plasticity of the mammalian liver are critical for systemic metabolic homeostasis in response to fluctuating nutritional conditions. Here, a spatially resolved transcriptomic landscape of mouse livers across fed, fasted and refed states using spatial transcriptomics is generated. This approach elucidated dynamic temporal‐spatial gene cascades and how liver zonation—both expression levels and patterns—adapts to shifts in nutritional status. Importantly, the pericentral nuclear receptor Nr1i3 (CAR) as a pivotal regulator of triglyceride metabolism is pinpointed. It is showed that the activation of CAR in the pericentral region is transcriptionally governed by Pparα. During fasting, CAR activation enhances lipolysis by upregulating carboxylesterase 2a, playing a crucial role in maintaining triglyceride homeostasis. These findings lay the foundation for future mechanistic studies of liver metabolic heterogeneity and plasticity in response to nutritional status changes, offering insights into the zonated pathology that emerge during liver disease progression linked to nutritional imbalances. Introduction: Nutrition plays an integral role in optimizing football players' performance during training sessions and matches and maintaining their overall health throughout the season. This study aimed to evaluate how well the dietary practices of professional and adolescent football players in Morocco during the competitive period met international macronutrient recommendations, and to explore the relationship between their nutritional status and aerobic performance, as measured by the Yo-Yo IRL1 test. Methods: A total of 277 footballers from Morocco's professional league, "Botola-Pro", were monitored over a seven-day (training microcycle) during the competitive period. The dietary intake was assessed through self-reported methods and 24-hour recalls. Relevant body composition was measured with bioelectrical impedance (BI), and aerobic performance was evaluated using the Yo-Yo IR test. Results: The results indicated significant variations in performance and nutritional status across different categories and age groups. The nutritional status of the players didn't match the UEFA recommendations (p < 0.001). We found that higher intake levels of carbohydrates and proteins were positively correlated with the total distance covered by the players (p < 0.001, r = 0.63, R2 = 0.4 for carbohydrates; p < 0.001, r = 0.59, R2 = 0.35 for proteins). Conversely, a higher proportion of energy derived from fats in the diet was negatively correlated with the distance covered (p < 0.001, r = −0.64, R2 = 0.41). Conclusion: These findings suggest that optimizing carbohydrates and protein intake while managing fat consumption is crucial for enhancing sporting performance. Background: Vitamin K (VK), an essential fat-soluble nutrient, exists in two primary forms, vitamin K1 (VK1), and vitamin K2 (VK2). VK1 plays an essential role in blood coagulation, while VK2 plays a crucial role in managing bone calcification, supporting bone strength and health. However, comprehensive epidemiological data on VK remains sparse, particularly in children. This study aims to evaluate the levels and characteristics of VK in children of Wenzhou area, China. Methods: A total of 3,342 children undergoing routine physical examinations in the outpatient department from December 2020 to August 2022 were recruited. The levels of VK (including VK1 and menaquinones (MK-4), a major form of VK2) and 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) in fasting serum samples from these children were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The study analyzed the levels and distribution of VK and 25(OH)D across different sex, age, and weight groups, and explored their potential related factors. Results: The median serum levels of MK-4 and VK1 were 0.12 (0.07, 0.21) ng/ml and 0.33 (0.18, 0.57) ng/ml, respectively. The reference ranges of MK-4 and VK1 were 0.01–0.58 ng/ml and 0.03–1.48 ng/ml, respectively. The median serum 25(OH)D level was 21.26 (17.30, 25.35) ng/ml. Moreover, there were no significant variations in the levels of MK-4 and VK1 across different age and sex groups. The level of MK-4 in the underweight group was significantly higher than that in the normal weight group. MK-4 level reached its peak in summer, while the VK1 concentration was at its lowest. Furthermore, a very weak positive correlation was revealed between MK-4 and VK1 levels. Conclusion: In this study, we defined the median values and reference ranges of MK-4 and VK1 in a sample of Chinese children aged 0–18 years. MK-4 levels were higher in underweight children. Introduction: L-Asparaginase (L-Asp) is a key drug in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL); however, it is commonly associated with the occurrence of adverse events (AE). Risk factors such as age, sex, nutritional status, and some single nucleotide variants (SNVs) in specific genes could be related to hypersensitivity reactions to L-Asp. The objective of this study was to identify the influence of individual characteristics and three SNVs in the GRIA1 and NFATC2 genes on the occurrence of the most significant adverse events caused by the use of L-Asp in Mexican children with ALL. Methods: Eighty-five children from ages 0–17 years old diagnosed with ALL were included. The patients were treated at two hospital centers in Mexico. The SNV genotypes of the GRI1A and NFATC2 genes studied were examined using real-time qPCR. The evaluation of AE was carried out according to the Common Terminology Criteria for adverse events, and the determination of anti-L-Asp antibodies was conducted using Western blot immunoassay. Results: Homozygosity (AA) of the GRIA1 rs4958351 SNV was significantly associated with the occurrence of AE with the use of L-Asp (OR = 4.05; 95% CI = 1.06 to 15.40, p = 0.04) and was strongly associated with the development of anti-L-Asp antibodies (OR = 3.4375, 95% CI = 1.04 to 11.25, p = 0.04). With this, we found a significant risk association for the SNV rs4958351 of the GRIA1 gene. On the other hand, we did not find significant risk associations for the GRIA1 rs6889909 and NFATC2 rs6021191 SNVs, although other populations have shown a significant risk. Discussion: Our study has some limitations, such as the small sample size, the heterogeneity in adverse events due to the patients' different regions of origin, and the limited ability to conduct a more detailed follow-up on pancreatitis. Additionally, since no significant associations were found between the NFATC2 rs6021191 and GRIA1 rs6889909 SNVs and the development of adverse events or the presence of antibodies due to the use of L-Asp, it is necessary to investigate new specific SNVs that may improve the efficacy and safety of treatment in Mexican children with ALL. Objective: This community-public-private-academic coalition project implemented and evaluated the effectiveness of a rural, community-based egg intervention that aimed to support the nutrition and health of children living in rural, poor communities from Intibucá, Honduras, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: This investigator-blind, non-randomized, controlled study was informed by a community health improvement process and participatory research. Women from 13 communities were given a microloan to start an egg farm that supplied 1 egg daily to 201 children ages 6–24 months for 1 year (intervention group). Control communities (n = 14) were selected from neighboring municipalities with similar sociodemographic backgrounds based on size. Sociodemographic-, anthropometric-, and morbidity data were collected biannually between January 2021 to January 2022. Outcome changes were compared with linear-, generalized- or Poisson- mixed models adjusted by sex, age, maternal education, breastfeeding status, assets, adults living at home, baseline outcomes, and community-cluster. Results: Baseline to 6- and 12-month weekly frequency of egg intake significantly increased in the intervention vs. the control group: 6-month change = 1.86; 95%CI (1.61, 2.14); 12-month change = 1.63; 95%CI (1.42, 1.87 p<0.001), respectively. Baseline to 12-month changes in the intervention group were not significant for length/height-for-age-z-scores = 0.12, p = 0.187; weight-for-length/height-z-scores = -0.02, p = 0.78; and diarrhea prevalence, AOR = 1.69; 95%CI (0.53, 5.42), p = 0.378. Lower odds of respiratory infections were observed for the intervention vs. the control group at 6- and 12-month post: AOR = 0.28; 95%CI (0.12, 0.63), p = 0.002; AOR = 0.30; 95%CI (0.12, 0.75), p = 0.010, respectively. Conclusions and relevance: Children in the intervention group reported consuming eggs more days per week relative to the control group. Lower odds of respiratory infections were observed in the intervention group throughout the study. Background: Successful aging is associated with an increase in life expectancy. For a better understanding of the aging process, recognize the relationship between telomere length and nutritional status is a novel approach in geriatric science. Telomers shortening coincides with a decrease in life expectancy, and an increased risk of malnutrition-related diseases. Goals: The goal of this study was to investigate whether a shorter telomere length is associated with a greater likelihood of malnutrition in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study with a probabilistic sample of 448 older people aged 60 years old or over, and living in the urban area of an inland Brazilian municipality was conducted. The information was gathered in two stages: a) a personal interview was conducted to obtain sociodemographic, cognitive, and functional autonomy data. The Mini Nutritional Assessment was used to assess the risk of malnutrition. b) a blood sample was taken to proceed with the relative quantitative study of telomere length using real-time qPCR method. The differences between the groups were estimated using Pearson's v2 and Fisher's exact tests. In the data analysis, descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression were applied. Results: In 34.15% of the total sample, malnutrition was recognized as a risk factor. Older people with the shortest telomere length had more chances of getting malnutrition (OR = 1.63; IC:95% = 1.04–2.55) compared to those with longer telomeres, independent of age groups, family income, multimorbidity, cognitive decline, and depressive symptoms. Conclusion: The creation of clinical trials and the implementation of therapies to reduce the risk of malnutrition will be aided using the telomere length as an aging innovative biomarker, connected with nutritional status. Background: To assess the adverse food reactions (AFR) prevalence in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and in non-ASD healthy controls (NASD). Nutritional status alterations, food selectivity and adherence to Mediterranean Diet (MD) were also evaluated. Methods: The NAFRA (Nutritional status and Adverse Food Reactions in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder) project was an observational, case-control, comparative study conducted at a tertriary center for pediatrics involving Caucasian patients of both sexes, aged 18 months-7 years, with a diagnosis of ASD, and matched NASD controls. Results: From October 2017 to December 2023, 100 ASD patients [79 male, mean (± SD) age 49.9 months (± 15.4)] and 100 NASD controls [75 male, mean (± SD) age 49.8 months (± 17.7)] were enrolled at the Pediatric Section of the Department of Translational Medical Science of the University of Naples Federico II. A significantly higher prevalence of AFR was observed in ASD patients if compared with NASD (16% vs. 2%, p = 0.001), mainly due to a higher prevalence of food allergy (7% vs. 1%, p = 0.03). A significantly higher prevalence of food intolerance and celiac disease was also observed in ASD children. The rate of obesity was significantly higher in ASD patients compared to NASD. Food selectivity and low MD-adherence were more frequent in ASD children (26% vs. 2%, p < 0.0001 and 28% vs. 16%, p = 0.041, respectively). Conclusions: The high rate of AFR, obesity and unhealthy dietary habits observed in ASD children strongly suggest the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, providing early diagnosis of AFR and appropriate nutritional management to improve core and associated ASD-related conditions. Finding a way to establish a sustainable cultivation system to produce celery as an important source of human being nutrition system due to its health and nutritional advantages is increasing by the day. Amino acids have a deep impact on plant metabolism; they improve mineral uptake and increase shoots and root growth, yield, chlorophyll biosynthesis, and photosynthesis rate as well as encouraging stimulation of several enzymes and coenzymes which lead to improved plant development and production besides quality. A two-year (2021/2022–2022/2023), trial was conducted to discuss two essential amino acids Glycine (GLY) and Tryptophan (TRP) effect on celery's growth, production, photosynthetic pigments, vitamin (C), total phenols, total flavonoids, total antioxidant activity, total indoles, nutritional status, and amino acids contents. During the winter season, three levels of each amino acid (0, 50, and 75 mg/l) were sprayed in two doses after 30 days of cultivation and 15 days from the first foliar. Results showed that the best performance of amino acids on plants vegetative growth characteristics, photosynthetic pigments, biochemical constituents, yield, and amino acids content was conducted by using (GLY + TRP) mix followed by TRP then GLY, while the best level of foliar applied amino acids was 75 mg/l in concentration. The best results on celery's vegetative growth, yield, chemical content, and amino acid content were recorded by using the (GLY + TRP) mix at the highest level of 75 mg/l in concentration. Background: The progression of malnutrition and sarcopenia after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer negatively influences long-term prognosis. To improve nutritional status after esophagectomy, we introduced an intensified nutrition management (iNM) protocol, in which nutritional counselling by dietitians was provided more frequently. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of iNM compared with the conventional NM (cNM). Methods: We included 126 patients who underwent esophagectomy before and after NM revision, and compared nutritional status and changes in body composition after esophagectomy between the cNM and iNM groups. Nutritional parameters were assessed, and we also calculated skeletal muscle index (SMI), skeletal muscle density (SMD), and visceral fat area (VFA) using computed tomography volumetry. Results: There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics or surgical outcomes between the groups. Compared with the cNM group, nutritional counselling was provided more frequently (P < 0.001) in the iNM group, and compliance rate increased from 56.3 to 91.9% (P < 0.001). Body weight loss at 4 and 6 months and SMI reduction at 6 months were significantly improved in the iNM group compared with the cNM group (P < 0.001, P = 0.032, and P = 0.023, respectively). There were no significant differences in the changes in SMD, VFA, serum albumin level, and prealbumin level between the two groups. Objective: This study aimed to analyse the relevant factors that may affect post-stroke fatigue (PSF) in patients with stroke and further explore the correlation between family functioning and PSF. Methods: Patients who had experienced a first episode of stroke and were admitted to the Department of Neurology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University were rigorously screened. The general data and family functioning of the patients on admission were collected, and their family adaptation, partnership, growth, affection and resolve scores and their PSF on the 5th day of admission were collected using the fatigue severity scale (FSS). Multiple linear regression analysis was then utilized to explore the factors affecting PSF in patients with stroke. Results: A total of 220 questionnaires were distributed, and 220 were returned, with 212 valid questionnaires and a valid return rate of 96.4%. These 212 patients had a family functioning score of 6.58 ± 2.00 and an FSS score of 36.62 ± 10.96. Spearman's correlation analysis showed negative correlations between the FSS scores and the adaptation, partnership, growth, affection, resolve and family functioning scores (r = -0.380, -0.505, -0.470, -0.303, -0.281 and -0.712, respectively; p < 0.001). Furthermore, multiple linear regression analysis showed that family functioning (β' = -0.516), marital status (β' = -0.244), household income (β' = -0.185), literacy (β' = -0.181) and activities of daily living (β' = -0.084) were influential factors for PSF in patients with stroke (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant negative correlation between family functioning and PSF, suggesting that better family functioning may help mitigate the severity of post-stroke fatigue. Healthcare providers should identify interventions to help patients and families address fatigue, boost disease recovery, promote patients' physical and mental health and improve their quality of life. Background and aim: The burden of orofacial clefts (OFCs) has declined globally except in sub-Saharan Africa, with a great disease burden in North Africa. Children with OFCs have a high risk of malnutrition, and African countries have some of the highest malnutrition rates. This scoping review assessed the status of research on OFCs and nutrition and feeding among children living in African countries. Methods: We followed the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines for conducting scoping reviews. We searched eleven databases for articles on malnutrition and feeding among children with OFCs living in African countries. No restriction was done by type of study or publication date. Books, book chapters, and reviews were excluded. Only publications in English language were included. We extracted information about the publication year, study design, setting, location, participants' age, data collection methods, international collaboration, and funding. We classified articles into studies assessing (1) the impact of nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy on OFCs, (2) the impact of OFCs on malnutrition, (3) feeding problems in children with OFCs, and (4) the impact of nutritional status on OFCs repair outcomes. We calculated frequencies and used bar charts and a map. Results: Out of 208 search results, 36 were duplicates, and 25 eventually fit the inclusion criteria, with 52% retrieved from Google Scholar. About 80% of the studies were from four countries: Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, and Uganda; 72% were hospital-based and 52% were cross-sectional. The most frequent data collection method was clinical examination and questionnaires. Most studies focused on feeding problems in children with OFCs (44%) and the impact of OFCs on malnutrition (32%). International collaboration was observed in six studies, with one study showing South-South collaboration. Only two studies were funded. Conclusions: There is a predominance of under-funded descriptive research not indexed by international databases. Minimal research has been directed to population-level OFC preventive programs in primary healthcare settings and assessing interventions supporting children with OFCs. A research agenda is needed to prioritize research needs and secure funds to support South-South collaboration to address the nutrition and feeding-related problems associated with OFCs. Background: Bovine colostrum (COL) is assumed to be one of the strongest natural immune stimulants. Regular ingestion of COL may contribute to improved immune response in athletes exposed to high training loads. Methods: Twenty-eight endurance-trained males aged 31.1 ± 10.2 years (body mass 81.9 ± 9.0 kg; height 1.82 ± 0.06 m) completed this randomized doubleblind placebo(PLA)-controlled crossover study aimed at investigating the effect of 12-week COL supplementation (25gCOL·day-1) on resting (REST), exerciseinduced (POST-EX), and short-term post-exercise recovery (REC; 1 h after test exercise) changes in selected saliva and blood immunoglobulins (Ig), white blood cell (WBC) count and differential; as well as blood hematological, nutritional status and muscle damage indices. The protocol assumed 4 study visits - before/after supplementation with COL (COLPRE and COLPOST) and PLA (PLAPRE and PLAPOST). During testing sessions, incremental rowing test to exhaustion and swimming-specific performance test were introduced as exercise stimuli. Results: At COLPOST visit the secretory IgA (SIgA) concentration in saliva was significantly higher at POST-EX and REC compared to REST (p<0.05). COL supplementation had no effect on blood IgA, IgE, IgD, IgG, and IgM concentrations. Furthermore, after COL supplementation decrease of hematocrit at REC (p<0.05) was revealed. Conclusions: 12-week supplementation with 25 gCOL·day-1 in endurance-trained male athletes resulted in a favorable increase in post-exercise concentration of salivary SIgA. COL seems to be a potential stimulator of local immune defense after exercise-induced homeostasis disturbances. Nevertheless, the lack of effect on blood markers indicates the need for further research in the area of mechanisms underlying the effect of the supposed COL immunological capacity. Background: Although nutrition and exercise both influence bone metabolism, little is currently known about their interaction, or whether nutritional intervention can modulate the bone biomarker response to acute exercise. Improved understanding of the relationships between nutrition, exercise and bone metabolism may have substantial potential to inform nutritional interventions to protect the bone health of exercising individuals, and to elucidate mechanisms by which exercise and nutrition influence bone. Objective: The aim was to synthesise available evidence related to the influence of nutrition on the response of the bone biomarkers procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide (P1NP) and C-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen (CTX-1) to acute exercise, using a systematic review and meta-analytic approach. Methods: Studies evaluating the influence of nutritional status or intervention on the bone biomarker response to an acute exercise bout were included and separated into four categories: (1) feeding status and energy availability, (2) macronutrients, (3) micronutrients and (4) other. Studies conducted on healthy human populations of any age or training status were included. Meta-analysis was conducted when data from at least five studies with independent datasets were available. In the case of insufficient data to warrant meta-analysis, results from individual studies were narratively synthesised and standardised mean effect sizes visually represented. Results: Twenty-two articles were included. Of these, three investigated feeding status or energy availability, eight macronutrients, eight micronutrients (all calcium) and six other interventions including dairy products or collagen supplementation. Three studies had more than one intervention and were included in all relevant outcomes. The largest and most commonly reported effects were for the bone resorption marker CTX-1. Meta-analysis indicated that calcium intake, whether provided via supplements, diet or infusion, reduced exercise-induced increases in CTX-1 (effect size − 1.1; 95% credible interval [CrI] − 2.2 to − 0.05), with substantially larger effects observed in studies that delivered calcium via direct infusion versus in supplements or foods. Narrative synthesis suggests that carbohydrate supplementation may support bone during acute exercise, via reducing exercise-induced increases in CTX-1. Conversely, a low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet appears to induce the opposite effect, as evidenced by an increased exercise associated CTX-1 response, and reduced P1NP response. Low energy availability may amplify the CTX-1 response to exercise, but it is unclear whether this is directly attributable to energy availability or to the lack of specific nutrients, such as carbohydrate. Conclusion: Nutritional intervention can modulate the acute bone biomarker response to exercise, which primarily manifests as an increase in bone resorption. Ensuring adequate attention to nutritional factors may be important to protect bone health of exercising individuals, with energy, carbohydrate and calcium availability particularly important to consider. Although a wide breadth of data were available for this evidence synthesis, there was substantial heterogeneity in relation to design and intervention characteristics. Objective: This study assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on college students' nutrition, including dietary behaviors and food security status. Participants: Participants included 140 students between 18 and 25 years of age, who were enrolled in a college or university in the greater Houston area. Methods: Analyses included descriptive statistics, t tests, and ANOVAs to analyze differences in dietary behaviors by demographic variables, and chi-square tests to assess characteristics associated with food security status. Results: The majority of participants reported changing their diets due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There were no significant differences by demographics. However, there were significant differences in food security status by race/ethnicity and social class. Conclusion: This study identified changes and disparities in college students' dietary behaviors and food security status during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) remains a major health issue in developing nations, contributing to preventable childhood blindness. However, there is lack of recent data on xerophthalmia, especially among school-aged children in Malaysia. We hypothesized that xerophthalmia persists among rural schoolchildren in Malaysia and potentially associated with socio-demographic status and malnutrition. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 596 schoolchildren (8-12 years) from ten rural primary schools located in five states across Malaysia. Children meeting the criteria for xerophthalmia assessment included those diagnosed with vitamin A deficiency (VAD) (plasma retinol < 0.70 µmol/L) and marginal VAD (plasma retinol 0.70 to < 1.05 µmol/L). The overall prevalence of xerophthalmia was 48.8%, with the most common ocular sign being conjunctival xerosis (38.9%). The occurrence of xerophthalmia was negatively associated with retinol-binding protein 4 (RPB4) (P =0.003), alpha-carotene (P =0.04), hemoglobin (P =0.004), weight (P =0.02), body mass index (BMI) (P =0.04) and WAZ (weight-for-age z-score) (P =0.04) status. Based on multivariate logistic regression analysis, a higher risk of xerophthalmia was observed in boys (Adjusted odd ratio [AOR]: 1.7, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.2-2.5) and Orang Asli (OA, indigenous) schoolchildren (AOR: 2.0, 95% CI: 1.3-3.0), while schoolchildren with overweight/obesity status (AOR: 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3-0.8) were associated with a reduced risk of xerophthalmia. The present study unveils a high prevalence of xerophthalmia among vitamin A-deficient primary schoolchildren in rural areas of Malaysia, especially among the indigenous community. The identified socio-demographic and nutritional factors associated to xerophthalmia would facilitate the implementation of more targeted interventions in addressing these issues. BACKGROUND: To determine the precise frequency of main pancreatic duct (MPD) dilatation within the remnant pancreas at 1 year after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) and its clinical implications, a prospective multicenter cohort study was performed in patients without MPD dilatation before PD (registry number: UMIN000029662). STUDY DESIGN: Between October 2017 and July 2020, patients with an MPD diameter less than 3 mm who were planned to undergo PD for periampullary lesions at 21 hospitals were enrolled. The primary endpoints were frequency of MPD dilatation at 1 year after PD, and the relationship between MPD dilatation and pancreatic endo- and exocrine function, nutritional status, and fatty liver. Secondary endpoints were risk factors for MPD dilatation at 1 year after PD and time-course change in MPD diameter. RESULTS: Of 200 registered patients, 161 patients were finally analyzed. Pancreatic fistula was the most frequent complication (76; 47.2%). MPD dilatation (MPD > 3 mm) at 1 year after PD was seen in 35 patients (21.7%). Pancreatic exocrine function, assessed by steatorrhea, was significantly impaired in patients with MPD dilatation. However, endocrine function, nutrition status, and fatty liver development were comparable between the 2 groups. In multivariate analysis, the serum total protein level 7.3 g/dL or more was an independent predictor for MPD dilatation at 1 year after PD (odds ratio 3.12, 95% CI 1.31 to 7.15). A mean MPD diameter significantly increased at 6 months after PD and kept plateau thereafter. CONCLUSIONS: MPD dilatation at 1 year after PD was seen in 21.7% of patients and significantly associated with exocrine function impairment but not with endocrine function, nutrition status, or development of fatty liver. Background/Objectives: The increasing global prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) presents significant challenges to healthcare systems. Our objective was to identify the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of IBD patients in Catalonia. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was carried out on patients diagnosed with IBD in Catalonia (2021). The database of the Information System for the Development of Research in Primary Care of Catalonia was used. Results: In Catalonia, the prevalence of IBD was 474 cases per 100,000 people (pcm), with an average diagnosis age of 42.9 years. Crohn's disease (CD) represented 34.34% of cases, and 21.2% were smokers and 1% were alcoholics. Nutritional status showed 3% underweight, 36.2% overweight, and 20% obese, with only 0.27% diagnosed as malnutrition. Mental health issues are notable; 36,531 pcm patients were diagnosed with anxiety and 14,656 pcm with depression, and 8.24% had a high risk of mortality measured by the Charlson index. The most prevalent vaccine-preventable infections were influenza (19,356 pcm), herpes zoster (8099 pcm), and varicella zoster (6946 pcm), with 4.56% of patients requiring hospitalisation for one of these reasons and 32.8% of patients for IBD complications, with higher rates observed in cases of CD. Conclusions: The prevalence of IBD was high, especially in urban areas, and patients showed a relevant number of comorbidities. Simple Summary: Nutritional assessment indicators have been recognized as useful in predicting treatment-related adverse events. In maintenance therapy with PARP inhibitors in ovarian cancer, treatment discontinuation due to treatment-related adverse events has been reported, but factors predicting these events are not identified. Our study suggested that PNI and mGPS can predict the risk of treatment discontinuation due to PARP inhibitor-related adverse events before starting maintenance therapy. This insight opens avenues for more personalized treatment plans, potentially improving patient outcomes. Background: Nutritional status is an important factor influencing toxicity of treatment. Nutritional assessment indicators such as the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score and modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) have been reported to be associated with treatment-related adverse events (AEs) for various malignancies. However, there are no reports investigating the relationship between nutritional status and AEs from poly-(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors (PARPi), which are widely used in recent years as maintenance therapy for ovarian cancer. Objective: The primary objective was to investigate the usefulness of nutritional assessment indicators in predicting treatment discontinuation due to AEs from PARPi. Methods: This multicenter retrospective study included patients diagnosed with ovarian cancer who received maintenance therapy with PARPi from January 2018 to December 2023. PNI, CONUT score, and mGPS were calculated based on hematological parameters measured within 7 days before the start of PARPi therapy. Results: A total of 272 patients received maintenance therapy with PARPi during the period, but due to the absence of the blood collection of albumin levels within one week or other exclusion criteria, 71 patients were finally included in this analysis. AEs were seen in 59 patients (83.1%), including 25 (35.2%) severe events (grade ≥3 in Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events v5.0). Eighteen patients (25.4%) discontinued treatment due to PARPi-related AEs. Low PNI (<48.44) and high mGPS (≥1) were predictors of treatment discontinuation in both univariate and multivariate analyses. CONUT was not a significant predictor in this study. Conclusions: Our study suggested that PNI and mGPS can predict the risk of treatment discontinuation due to PARPi-related AEs before starting maintenance therapy. Background: Accurate assessment of body composition during infancy is an important marker of early growth. This study aimed to develop anthropometric models to predict body composition in 3–24-month-old infants from diverse socioeconomic settings and ethnic groups. Methods: An observational, longitudinal, prospective, multi-country study of infants from 3 to 24 months with body composition assessed at three monthly intervals using deuterium dilution (DD) and anthropometry. Linear mixed modelling was utilized to generate sex-specific fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) prediction equations, using length(m), weight-for-length (kg/m), triceps and subscapular skinfolds and South Asian ethnicity as variables. The study sample consisted of 1896 (942 measurements from 310 girls) training data sets, 941 (441 measurements from 154 girls) validation data sets of 3–24 months from Brazil, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. The external validation group (test) comprised 349 measurements from 250 (185 from 124 girls) infants 3–6 months of age from South Africa, Australia and India. Results: Sex-specific equations for three age categories (3–9 months; 10–18 months; 19–24 months) were developed, validated on same population and externally validated. Root mean squared error (RMSE) was similar between training, validation and test data for assessment of FM and FFM in boys and in girls. RMSPE and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) were higher in validation compared to test data for predicting FM, however, in the assessment of FFM, both measures were lower in validation data. RMSE for test data from South Africa (M/F−0.46/0.45 kg) showed good agreement with validation data for assessment of FFM compared to Australia (M/F−0.51/0.33 kg) and India(M/F−0.77/0.80 kg). Conclusions: Anthropometry-based FFM prediction equations provide acceptable results. Providing all infants with the best start to life is a universal but challenging goal for the global community. Historically, the size and shape of infants, quantified by anthropometry and commencing with birthweight, has been the common yardstick for physical growth and development. Anthropometry has long been considered a proxy for nutritional status during infancy when, under ideal circumstances, changes in size and shape are most rapid. Developed from data collected in the Multicentre Growth Reference Study (MGRS), WHO Child Growth Standards for healthy infants and children have been widely accepted and progressively adopted. In contrast, and somewhat surprisingly, much less is understood about the 'quality' of growth as reflected by body composition during infancy. Recent advances in body composition assessment, including the more widespread use of air displacement plethysmography (ADP) across the first months of life, have contributed to a progressive increase in our knowledge and understanding of growth and development. Along with stable isotope approaches, most commonly the deuterium dilution (DD) technique, the criterion measure of total body water (TBW), our ability to quantify lean and fat tissue using a two-compartment model, has been greatly enhanced. However, until now, global reference charts for the body composition of healthy infants have been lacking. This paper details some of the historical challenges associated with the assessment of body composition across the first two years of life, and references the logical next steps in growth assessments, including reference charts. The aim of this study was to develop a feeding protocol for the larviculture of Apistogramma cacatuoides, using the histological approach to larval nutrition conditions. For this, three experiments were carried out. Experiment 1 was carried out in a randomized design to determine the optimal amount of Artemia nauplii (AN) per larva, and three treatments were evaluated: P1—feeding with 25 A. nauplii per larva (AN/L) during the first 5 days, followed by 50 AN/L from the 6th to the 10th day and 100 AN/L from the 11th to the 20th day; P2 and P3—37 and 50 AN/L during the first 5 days, 75 and 100 AN/L from the 6th to the 10th day and 150 and 200 AN/L from the 11th to the 20th day. Experiment 2 was carried out in a randomized design to determine the daily frequency of feeding and evaluated four feeding frequencies: F1—feeding only once a day (09:00); (F2)—feeding twice a day (09:00 and 17:00); F3—feeding three times a day (09:00, 11:30 and 17:00); and F4—feeding four times a day (09:00, 11: 30, 14:00 and 17:00). Experiment 3 lasted 40 days and was conducted in a randomized design to evaluate three periods for the beginning of the feeding transition: WE10:AN for 10 days, followed by 3 days of co‐feeding and commercial feed until the end of the experimental period; WE15:AN for 15 days, followed by 3 days of co‐feeding and commercial feed; WE20:AN for 20 days, followed by 3 days of co‐feeding and commercial feed. The results of this study showed that, for the best development of the larvae, they should receive the feeding protocol 50−100−200 AN/L (P3) until the 20th day of exogenous feeding. From the 21st day, the transition to inert food should begin with 3 days of co‐feeding, and feeding during larviculture should be carried out at a frequency of twice a day; this protocol provided a good nutritional status for the larvae, as shown by the histological approach. Objectives: The efficacy of interventions targeting lifestyle habits, particularly dietary habits, among postpartum women is well established. However, whether these results can be translated into tangible changes in the care and services provided to this population remains unclear. Therefore, the aim is to examine the implementation outcomes of postpartum nutritional interventions delivered in healthcare, community, or eHealth settings. Methods: A search was conducted in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library databases in July 2024, to identify all relevant studies. Included studies had to report at least 1 of the 8 implementation outcomes studied: acceptability, adoption, appropriateness, implementation cost, feasibility, fidelity, penetration, and sustainability. Study selection and data extraction were performed by two independent reviewers. Descriptive analysis of reported outcomes was performed. PROSPERO ID: CRD42022351411. Results: Of the 8907 unique studies identified, 26 interventions (24 publications) were included.There was a great heterogeneity among interventions studied and implementation outcomes reported. Acceptability, feasibility, and fidelity were the most studied implementation outcomes. Overall, postpartum nutritional interventions were found to be acceptable and useful, but improvements were suggested by participants, such as more frequent contacts and longer programs. Recruitment, retention, participation, and penetration rates widely varied across studies. Challenges hindering the delivery of nutritional interventions were reported by participants, such as lack of time and the presence of medical conditions following delivery. Conclusions for Practice: This review demonstrates the potential for the delivery and implementation of nutritional interventions in real-world settings during the postpartum period. Significance: What is Already Known About the Topic?: The efficacy of interventions aiming to modify lifestyle behaviors, especially dietary habits, among postpartum women is well established. Background: Food insecurity has been linked to higher rates of obesity. It has also been shown to diminish the effectiveness of weight loss strategies, including intensive lifestyle interventions. One essential component of food insecurity is having a geospatial disadvantage in access to healthy, affordable food, such as living within a food desert. This study aims to determine if food insecurity also impacts weight loss and nutritional outcomes in patients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or sleeve gastrectomy (SG). Methods: Clinical outcomes of patients who underwent RYGB or SG at Cleveland Clinic or affiliate regional hospitals in the United States from 2010 to 2018 were collected. Modified Retail Food Environmental Index (mRFEI) data was collected from the Center for Disease Control and merged with patient census tract data, allowing the patient cohort to be divided into those living in areas identified as food secure (mRFEI > 10%), food swamps (mRFEI = 1–10%), or food deserts (mRFEI = 0). Postoperative weight change was evaluated with quadratic growth mixture models and stratified by surgery type. Results: A total of 5097 patients were included in this study cohort, including 3424 patients who underwent RYGB and 1673 who underwent SG. The median duration of follow-up was 2.3 years (IQR 0.89–3.6 years). Food security status was not associated with postoperative weight change (RYGB p = 0.73, SG p = 0.60), weight loss nadir (RYGB p = 0.60, SG p = 0.79), or weight regain (RYGB p = 0.93, SG p = 0.85). Deficiencies in nutritional markers at 1–2 years after surgery were also not significantly different between food security groups. Conclusion: Despite the established relationship between food insecurity and obesity, food insecurity does not negatively impact weight loss or nutritional outcomes following RYGB or SG, demonstrating metabolic surgery as a powerful and equitable tool for treating obesity. Background: Roux-en-Y (RYGB) and one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) represent two of the most used bariatric/metabolic surgery (BMS) procedures. Gut microbiota (GM) shift after bypass surgeries, currently understated, may be a possible key driver for the short- and long-term outcomes. Methods: Prospective, multicenter study enrolling patients with severe obesity, randomized between OAGB or RYGB. Fecal and blood samples were collected, pre- (T0) and 24 months postoperatively (T1). GM was determined by V3-V4 16S rRNA regions sequencing and home-made bioinformatic pipeline based on Qiime2 plugin and R packages. Objects: To compare OAGB vs RYGB microbiota profile at T1 and its impact on metabolic and nutritional status. Results: 54 patients completed the study, 27 for each procedure. An overall significant variation was detected in anthropometric and serum nutritional parameters at T1, with a significant, similar decrease in overall microbial alpha and beta diversity observed in both groups. An increase in relative abundances of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria and a reduction of Bacteroidetes, no significant changes in Firmicutes and Verrucomicrobia, with an increase of the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio were observed. Conclusions: BMS promotes a dramatic change in GM composition. This is the first multicenter, RCT evaluating the impact of OAGB vs Roux-en-Y bypass on GM profile. The bypass technique per se did not impact differently on GM or other examined metabolic parameters. The emergence of slightly different GM profile postoperatively may be related to clinical conditions or may influence medium or long-term outcomes and as such GM profile may represent a biomarker for bariatric surgery's outcomes. Background: Cognitive impairment (CI) is common in older adults, especially those with renal dysfunction. We aimed to investigate the complex relationships among renal function, nutritional status, and CI in older people free from late chronic kidney disease (CKD) and severe CI. Methods: A study of older people (≥60 years old) with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of >30 mL/min/1.73 m2 and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores of >10 (n = 237) was conducted at Beijing Tongren Hospital. Their eGFR was determined using the CKD‐EPI‐cr‐Cysc equation. Cognitive function was evaluated with the MoCA. We tested the relationship between eGFR and MoCA scores using Spearman correlation analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis. We then conducted a mediation analysis to figure out the mediating roles of nutritional indicators (Mini Nutritional Assessment‐Short Form (MNA‐SF) scores, albumin (ALB), and haemoglobin (HGB)) between the eGFR and MoCA scores. Results: The incidence of CI was 48.5% (115/237) in older people. Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the better the kidney function, the better the cognitive function (R = 0.297, P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that eGFR decrease per 15 mL/min/1.73 m2 (OR: 1.415, 95% confidence interval: 1.055–1.896, P = 0.020) was related to CI after adjusting for age and sex. However, the eGFR was not associated with cognitive decline after adjusting for nutritional indicators, behavioural risk factors, other biomarkers, and chronic conditions, suggesting that eGFR is not independently associated with CI. Mediation analysis revealed that the MNA‐SF scores (a*b = 0.006 (0.0002–0.012)) and HGB (a*b = 0.008 (0.001–0.017)) were mediating factors between the eGFR and MoCA scores. Conclusions: A decline in renal function can directly lead to CI and can also exacerbate cognitive deficits through intermediary factors such as MNA‐SF scores and HGB. Therefore, correcting anaemia and improving nutritional status are significantly important for enhancing cognitive function in older patients, especially those with renal dysfunction. Soil nutrition assessment is a critical factor in improving both the quantity and quality of agricultural yields. The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology represents a groundbreaking advancement, allowing for real‐time measurements in smart farming. This article focuses on investigating and evaluating the current challenges in nutrient management within smart farming and explores the future potential of utilizing IoT for nutrient management. To gather data, bibliometric analysis and utilization of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) flowchart were conducted, searching on the Publish or Perish and Science direct search engines using the keywords "soil nutrient monitoring smart farming internet of things" without quotation marks. A total of 395 articles were initially identified, 20 of which were included in the analysis after verification with Covidence assessment tools. Our review of existing studies revealed that many nutritional management approaches are still in prototype and experimental design, without the use of experimental design agriculture standards, without validation through plant testing, and mainly focus on monitoring systems. This highlights the need for additional research into large‐scale studies, considering data security and the application of this technology in agricultural experimental design across a wide range of agricultural practices. Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) has swept through Florida reefs and caused mass mortality of numerous coral species. In the wake of these losses, efforts are underway to propagate coral species impacted by SCTLD and promote population recovery. However, numerous knowledge gaps must be addressed to effectively grow, outplant, and restore populations of the slower growing, massive species that were lost. Here, we used sexual recruits of Diploria labyrinthiformis spawned in captivity to understand how conditioning, coral size, and nutritional status at outplanting affect coral survivorship, growth, and susceptibility to predation. We found that ex situ conditioning with supplemental feeding increased coral growth rates, resulting in larger sized corals at the time of outplanting. In turn, these corals had higher growth rates in the field and a lower probability of being removed by predators than outplants that were conditioned in in situ nurseries. Additionally, we found that coral size was an important predictor of survivorship, suggesting that hastening the speed at which young corals grow and outplanting larger juveniles can improve restoration outcomes. Taken together, our results suggest that providing supplemental food to corals at ex situ facilities confers benefits that could help restore populations of massive coral species impacted by SCTLD. Background: Dysphagia, as a geriatric syndrome, is prevalent in the intensive care unit (ICU). Malnutrition resulting from swallowing disorders is likely to correlate with adverse ICU outcomes, including delirium, thereby escalating the costs of care and hospitalization. However, malnutrition has not received the attention it deserves in ICU clinical nursing practice. As two preventable and correctable conditions—malnutrition and delirium—the advantages of early identification and intervention are substantial. Exploring the relationship between malnutrition and delirium, starting from the high‐risk group of elderly patients with swallowing difficulties in the ICU, will aid us in managing patients promptly and effectively. Aim: To investigate the relationship between malnutrition and the incidence of delirium in elderly patients with dysphagia in the ICU. Study Design: This is a retrospective study. Data for this study were obtained from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care‐IV. All 2273 patients included were dysphagia older patients over 65 years of age admitted to the ICU, and logistic regression was used to explore the relationship between malnutrition and delirium. We also used propensity score matching (PSM) for sensitivity analysis. Results: Among the included patients with swallowing difficulties, 13% individuals (297/2273) exhibited malnutrition, with a delirium incidence rate of 55.9% (166/297). In the non‐malnutrition group (1976/2273), the delirium incidence rate is 35.6% (704/1976). After adjusting for 31 covariates, multifactorial logistic regression showed that malnutrition was significantly positively associated with the incidence of delirium in elderly dysphagic patients in the ICU (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.96, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.47–2.62). The results remained stable after analysis by PSM. Conclusion: Malnutrition was significantly positively associated with the incidence of delirium in elderly dysphagic patients in the ICU. Malnutrition should be given adequate attention in the ICU. Relevance to Clinical Practice: ICU nurses should pay particular attention to malnutrition, especially among the high‐prevalence group of patients with dysphagia. ABSTRACT Previously published recommendations for vegetarian (including vegan) diets for children have highlighted the need for vitamin B12 supplementation. Increased attention to several other key nutrients (including iodine, vitamin D, calcium, and iron) has also been recommended. However, an overview focusing on supplementation guidelines, specifically for vegan infants, has not been published, and a potential requirement for iodine and/or selenium supplementation in (some) vegan infants has not been discussed. Vegan complementary feeding should be supplemented (particularly with 5 μg/day of vitamin B12 and 10 μg/day of vitamin D). Iodine should be supplemented (up to 110 μg/day) if the intake of breast milk and infant formula is low, and selenium supplementation (5 μg/day) should be considered in regions with low soil selenium levels. Caution is required to avoid excessive intakes of iodine and particularly selenium. Supplements for vegan infants are on the market, and observational studies are urgently needed to assess the nutrient intake (including supplements) and status in vegan infants. Women who have premature menopause are increasing in number and there is a wide regional diversity across the World, including India. However, in India, the relationship between age at menopause and cardiovascular diseases is still unclear. To fill this research gap, we undertook the present study using data from the Longitudinal Aging Study of India (Wave1, 2017–18). Bivariate logistic regression with three different models controlling for socio-economic and demographic characteristics, reproductive history, nutritional status, and co-morbidities of CVDs was used to show the relationship between CVDs and premature menopause. In all three models, the adjusted odds of having CVDs were higher for premature menopausal women than for those who had menopause between the ages of 45–50. There is a need to understand menopausal problems and their risk factors. Context Poor anthropometric data quality affect the prevalence of malnutrition and could harm public policy planning. Objective This systematic review and meta-analysis was designed to identify different methods to evaluate and clean anthropometric data, and to calculate the frequency of implausible values for weight and height obtained from these methodologies. Data Sources Studies about anthropometric data quality and/or anthropometric data cleaning were searched for in the MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases in October 2020 and updated in January 2023. In addition, references of included studies were searched for the identification of potentially eligible studies. Data Extraction Paired researchers selected studies, extracted data, and critically appraised the selected publications. Data Analysis Meta-analysis of the frequency of implausible values and 95% confidence interval (CI) was estimated. Heterogeneity (I 2) and publication bias were examined by meta-regression and funnel plot, respectively. Results In the qualitative synthesis, 123 reports from 104 studies were included, and in the quantitative synthesis, 23 studies of weight and 14 studies of height were included. The study reports were published between 1980 and 2022. The frequency of implausible values for weight was 0.55% (95%CI, 0.29–0.91) and for height was 1.20% (95%CI, 0.44–2.33). Heterogeneity was not affected by the methodological quality score of the studies and publication bias was discarded. Conclusions Height had twice the frequency of implausible values compared with weight. Using a set of indicators of quality to evaluate anthropometric data is better than using indicators singly. Early retrospective data identify that dysphagia is common in older persons with burn injury, suggesting a rate of 47 %, and that it is associated with medical, burn, and nutritional outcomes. To prospectively (1) explore the incidence, (2) describe associations, and (3) evaluate risk factors for dysphagia in patients ≥ 75 years old hospitalised with burn injury. All patients > 75 years old admitted to Concord-Repatriation-General-Hospital with burn injury over 4 years (2019–2023) were assessed for dysphagia on presentation and were continually monitored throughout their admission. Burn injury, demographic, and nutritional data were prospectively captured and analysed for association with dysphagia. Sixty-two patients (33 male) aged 75–95 years (median=83 years) were recruited. Dysphagia was identified in 50 %. Dysphagia was associated with burn size (p = 0.002), pre-existing cognitive impairment (p = 0.000), hospital length of stay (p = 0.001), in-hospital complications (p = 0.000), feeding dependence (p = 0.002), nutritional status (p = 0.013) and enteral feeding duration (p = 0.030). Cognitive impairment was the most sensitive predictor for dysphagia at 100 % (specificity=29 %, NPV=100 %, PPV=59 %). Development of secondary comorbidities was less sensitive at 52 % (NPV 65 %), but was associated with high specificity (90 %) and PPV (84 %). One in every two patients ≥ 75 years admitted with burn injury will demonstrate dysphagia during their hospital admission. Those with pre-existing cognitive impairment are most at risk. • Dysphagia incidence in the older person with burn injury is confirmed to be high. • Dysphagia in the older person with burn injury is confirmed to be associated with increased morbidity and mortality. • Those with pre-existing cognitive impairment are most at risk for dysphagia.
