BACKGROUND: Designing technologies that users will be interested in, start using, and keep using has long been a challenge. In the health domain, the question of technology acceptance is even more important, as the possible intrusiveness of technologies could lead to patients refusing to even try them. Developers and researchers must address this question not only in the design and evaluation of new health care technologies but also across the different stages of the user's journey. Although a range of definitions for these stages exists, many researchers conflate related terms, and the field would benefit from a coherent set of definitions and associated measurement approaches. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to explore how technology acceptance is interpreted and measured in mobile health (mHealth) literature. We seek to compare the treatment of acceptance in mHealth research with existing definitions and models, identify potential gaps, and contribute to the clarification of the process of technology acceptance. METHODS: We searched the PubMed database for publications indexed under the Medical Subject Headings terms "Patient Acceptance of Health Care" and "Mobile Applications." We included publications that (1) contained at least one of the terms "acceptability," "acceptance," "adoption," "accept," or "adopt"; and (2) defined the term. The final corpus included 68 relevant studies. RESULTS: Several interpretations are associated with technology acceptance, few consistent with existing definitions. Although the literature has influenced the interpretation of the concept, usage is not homogeneous, and models are not adapted to populations with particular needs. The prevalence of measurement by custom surveys suggests a lack of standardized measurement tools. CONCLUSIONS: Definitions from the literature were published separately, which may contribute to inconsistent usage. Dino Provenzal (Livorno, 1877 – Voghera, 1972) fu intellettuale, insegnante e scrittore italiano. Le sue numerose opere sono per la maggior parte dedicate alla riflessione sulla lingua italiana o rivolte al mondo della scuola. La sua carriera scolastica, prima di insegnante e poi di preside, si dipanò in tutto il territorio italiano: da qui Provenzal poté acquisire una profonda conoscenza della realtà scolastica e linguistica del paese, di cui si sentiva orgogliosamente cittadino, maturando e nutrendo un vivissimo interesse per la questione dell’educazione linguistica scolastica e nazionale. Già allievo di Giovanni Pascoli, intrattenne, come testimoniato da un epistolario nutritissimo, rapporti di amicizia e corrispondenza con intellettuali del calibro di Giuseppe Lombardo Radice e Giovanni Gentile, alla cui elaborazione della riforma del sistema scolastico partecipò con interesse e serietà, ma anche di Bruno Migliorini, col quale scambiò accorte riflessioni linguistiche, e dell’editore Ettore Formiggini, col quale condivise le origini ebraiche e il dramma della persecuzione negli anni del regime fascista in Italia. Visse, infatti, intensamente, nella sua esperienza di uomo e di educatore, questo periodo storico, da cui scaturirono opere biografiche e di denuncia nei confronti delle ingiustizie e della manipolazione calcolatrice della lingua attuata dal regime. Provenzal fu sempre animato da una grande passione per la lingua e per il suo insegnamento. Si impegnò per la promozione di un uso linguistico consapevole in tutta la nazione, scegliendo come pubblico per le sue opere non solo gli studenti, ma anche «gente di media, e anche meno che media, cultura, ragazzi, artigiani, persone che di linguistica sanno poco o nulla». Per lui, infatti, la parola rappresenta il pensiero e, per quanto tale rappresentazione possa risultare imperfetta e parziale, è l’unico strumento che distingue l’uomo dagli animali e lo solleva dalla brutalità. This trial assessed the efficacy of MR309 (a novel selective sigma-1 receptor ligand previously developed as E-52862) in ameliorating oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy (oxaipn). A discontinuous regimen of MR309 (400 mg/day, 5 days per cycle) was tested in patients with colorectal cancer receiving FOLFOX in a phase II, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter clinical trial. Outcome measures included changes in 24-week quantitative measures of thermal sensitivity and total neuropathy score. In total, 124 patients were randomized (1:1) to MR309 or placebo. Sixty-three (50.8%) patients withdrew prematurely before completing 12 planned oxaliplatin cycles. Premature withdrawal because of cancer progression was less frequent in the MR309 group (7.4% vs 25.0% with placebo; p = 0.054). MR309 significantly reduced cold pain threshold temperature [mean treatment effect difference (SE) vs placebo: 5.29 (1.60)°C; p = 0.001] and suprathreshold cold stimulus-evoked pain intensity [mean treatment effect difference: 1.24 (0.57) points; p = 0.032]. Total neuropathy score, health-related quality-of-life measures, and nerve-conduction parameters changed similarly in both arms, whereas the proportion of patients with severe chronic neuropathy (National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events ≥ 3) was significantly lower in the MR309 group (3.0% vs 18.2% with placebo; p = 0.046). The total amount of oxaliplatin delivered was greater in the active arm (1618.9 mg vs 1453.8 mg with placebo; p = 0.049). Overall, 19.0% of patients experienced at least 1 treatment-related adverse event (25.8% and 11.9% with MR309 and placebo, respectively). Intermittent treatment with MR309 was associated with reduced acute oxaipn and higher oxaliplatin exposure, and showed a potential neuroprotective role for chronic cumulative oxaipn. Furthermore, MR309 showed an acceptable safety profile.
