We report large amplitude modulation waveforms as large as ~ 10 V using vanadium dioxide micro-channel devices operating under current-controlled conditions. The self-sustained electrical oscillations were generated by controlling the applied current in the negative differential resistance region of the investigated devices. An appropriate value of internal capacitance was achieved as parasitic capacitance in the device structure to stabilize the electrical oscillations. This eliminates the need of an external pulsed source or any external passive component connected to the micro-channel devices. Amplitude and frequency of the oscillation were tuned by illuminating the device micro-channel with an external laser. An equivalent circuit model was developed to simulate the waveforms. A good agreement between experiment and simulation was verified.

The phase 4 ABOUND.70+ trial assessed the safety and efficacy of nab-paclitaxel/carboplatin continuously or with a 1-week break between cycles in elderly patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Patients ≥70 years with locally advanced/metastatic NSCLC were randomized 1:1 to first-line nab-paclitaxel days 1, 8, 15 plus carboplatin day 1 of a 21-day cycle (21d) or the same nab-paclitaxel/carboplatin regimen with a 1-week break between cycles (21d + break; 28d). The primary endpoint was the percentage of patients with grade ≥ 2 peripheral neuropathy (PN) or grade ≥ 3 myelosuppression. Other key endpoints included progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and overall response rate (ORR). A total of 143 patients were randomized (71 to 21d, 72 to 21d + break). The percentage of patients with grade ≥ 2 PN or grade ≥ 3 myelosuppression was similar between the 21d and 21d + break arms (76.5 and 77.1%; P = 0.9258). Treatment exposure was lower in the 21d arm compared with the 21d + break arm. A novel mechanism for upset is seen in a commercially available 0.25 [micro]m 10-T SEE hardened SRAM cell. Unlike traditional multiple node charge collection in which diffusions near a single event strike collect the deposited carriers, this new mechanism involves direct drift-diffusion collection at an NFET transistor in conjunction with parasitic bipolar conduction in nearby PFET transistors. The charge collection with the parasitic bipolar conduction compromise the SEE hardened design, thus causing upsets. The mechanism was identified using laser testing and three-dimensional TCAD simulations. Index Terms--Charge sharing, parasitic bipolar, single event upset.

Simulations show that neglecting ion-ion interaction processes (both particles having Z > 1) results in an underestimation of the total on-orbit single event upset error rate by more than two orders of magnitude for certain technologies. The inclusion of ion-ion nuclear reactions leads to dramatically different SEU error rates for CMOS devices containing high Z materials compared with direct ionization by the primary ion alone. Device geometry and material composition have a dramatic effect on charge deposition in small sensitive volumes for the spectrum of ion energies found in space, compared with the limited range of energies typical of ground tests. Heavy ion irradiation was simulated using a Geant4 based Monte-Carlo transport code. Electronic and nuclear physics were used to generate statistical profiles of charge deposition in the sensitive volume of an SEU hardened SRAM. Simulation results show that materials external to the sensitive volume can affect the experimentally measured cross-section curve. Index Terms--Cross section, Geant4, MRED, single event upset.

This paper provides suggestions for designing projects, including business plans, that have a greater chance of success than most projects. An example is provided where the World Bank began a complex initiative to help small farmers improve productivity. An ongoing process of learning and discovery that taps into the organizations' collective knowledge is more likely to succeed than other methods.

Soil permeability models are evaluated according to accuracy and applicability. The sealed double ring infiltrometer method is rated the most reliable in situ, with other methods including two-stage borehole and large block specimen testing.

The authors failed to take into account some of the inherent soil properties in their stochastic model. These properties include the hydraulic conductivity of the various clay liners, the effects of plasticity index and the mineralogy of the clayer soils. The omission of these factors in the model led to significant inaccuracies in the obtained permeability values.
