Abstract

Flat-band Majorana bound states of nodal $p$-wave superconductors give rise to striking electromagnetic anomalies, reflecting their high degree of degeneracy at the Fermi level. However, experimental investigations of these states have been limited because of the scarcity of materials exhibiting intrinsic $p$-wave superconductivity. In this Letter, we demonstrate that Majorana flat bands can emerge in a hybrid system consisting of a conventional superconductor and a $p$-wave magnet, a recently proposed class of unconventional magnets that possess a unique composite symmetry, the $[C_{2\perp}||\boldsymbol{t}]$ symmetry. The degeneracy of the flat-band Majorana bound states is protected by chiral symmetry from the BDI symmetry class, which originates from the $[C_{2\perp}||\boldsymbol{t}]$ symmetry of the $p$-wave magnet. In addition, we predict the robust appearance of a zero-bias conductance peak in a dirty normal-metal--superconductor junction containing a $p$-wave magnet, which serves as an unambiguous signature of anomalous proximity effects associated with the Majorana flat bands.

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV Au$+$Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by L\'evy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter $\lambda$, the L\'evy index of stability $\alpha$, and the L\'evy-scale parameter $R$ as a function of transverse mass $m_T$ and centrality. The $\lambda(m_T)$ parameter is constant at larger values of $m_T$, but decreases as $m_T$ decreases. The L\'evy scale parameter $R(m_T)$ decreases with $m_T$ and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The L\'evy exponent $\alpha(m_T)$ is independent of $m_T$ within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is significantly different from that of Gaussian ($\alpha=2$) or Cauchy ($\alpha=1$) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%-60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the $\eta'$ meson is included. In each centrality class, the best value of the in-medium $\eta'$ mass is compared to the mass of the $\eta$ meson, as well as to several theoretical predictions that consider restoration of $U_A(1)$ symmetry in hot hadronic matter., Comment: 401 authors from 75 institutions, 23 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. v2 is version accepted for publication by Physical Review C. Abstract

A dedicated isochronous storage ring, named the Rare-RI Ring, was constructed at the RI Beam Factory of RIKEN, aiming at precision mass measurements of nuclei located in uncharted territories of the nuclear chart. The Rare-RI Ring employs the isochronous mass spectrometry technique with the goal to achieve a relative mass precision of $10^{-6}$ within a measurement time of less than 1 ms. The performance of the facility was demonstrated through mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei with well-known masses. Velocity or magnetic rigidity is measured for every particle prior to its injection into the ring, wherein its revolution time is accurately determined. The latter quantity is used to determine the mass of the particle, while the former one is needed for non-isochronicity corrections. Mass precisions on the order of $10^{-5}$ were achieved in the first commissioning, which demonstrates that Rare-RI Ring is a powerful tool for mass spectrometry of short-lived nuclei.

Abstract

We conducted measurements of $K^- + {^3{\rm He}} \to \pi \!Y \!N + N'$ reactions using a $1~{\rm GeV}/c$ $K^-$-beam, with the objective of understanding the broad decay width of $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ (approximately twice as broad as that of $\Lambda(1405)$ considered to be the $\bar{K} \!N$ quasi-bound state). We successfully reproduced distributions of the $\pi \! Y \! N$ invariant mass and momentum transfer for $\pi \! Y \! N$ using model fitting functions for $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ formation and quasi-free $\bar{K}$ absorption (${\rm QF}_{\bar{K}-{\rm abs}}$) processes. The model can describe the experimental data quite well, and four $\bar{K} \! N \! N \to \pi \! Y \! N $ cross-sections were obtained. The results indicate that mesonic decay is the dominant decay branch of $\bar{K} \! N \! N$. The results also suggest that $\Gamma_{\pi \Lambda N} \sim \Gamma_{\pi \Sigma N}$, which indicates that the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=1$ absorption channel, in addition to the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=0$ absorption channel, substantially contribute to the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ decay, making the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ state approximately twice as unstable as $\Lambda$(1405).

Abstract

We show theoretically that specular Andreev reflection occurs stably at altermagnet--superconductor interfaces, which is a phenomenon that has previously been predicted only in a limited range of materials, such as Dirac/Weyl materials with fine-tuned chemical potentials. Furthermore, the characteristic spin-split bands of the altermagnet lead to a distinctive spin polarization in the specular Andreev reflections. By utilizing this feature, we propose a device that integrates the functions of both a Cooper pair splitter and a spin beam splitter, thereby creating energy-entangled electron pairs. The positive nonlocal conductance and the positive noise cross-correlation are unambiguous signatures of specular Andreev reflections in the proposed device.

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment has performed a systematic study of identified charged-hadron ($\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p$, $\bar{p}$) production at midrapidity in $p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV. Identified charged-hadron invariant transverse-momentum ($p_T$) and transverse-mass ($m_T$) spectra are presented and interpreted in terms of radially expanding thermalized systems. The particle ratios of $K/\pi$ and $p/\pi$ have been measured in different centrality ranges of large (Cu$+$Au, U$+$U) and small ($p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au) collision systems. The values of $K/\pi$ ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. However the values of $p/\pi$ ratios measured in large collision systems reach the values of $\approx0.6$, which is $\approx2$ times larger than in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the baryon enhancement expected from hadronization by recombination. Identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors ($R_{AB}$) are also presented. Enhancement of proton $R_{AB}$ values over meson $R_{AB}$ values was observed in central $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions. The proton $R_{AB}$ values measured in $p$$+$Al collision system were found to be consistent with $R_{AB}$ values of $\phi$, $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, and $\pi^0$ mesons, which may indicate that the size of the system produced in $p$$+$Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production., Comment: 480 authors from 78 institutions, 18 pages, 6 tables, 16 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. 15. Molecular mechanism of parental H3/H4 recycling at a replication fork

Abstract In chromatin replication, faithful recycling of histones from parental DNA to replicated strands is essential for maintaining epigenetic information across generations. A previous experiment has revealed that disrupting interactions between the N-terminal tail of Mcm2, a subunit in DNA replication machinery, and a histone H3/H4 tetramer perturb the recycling. However, the molecular pathways and the factors that regulate the ratio recycled to each strand and the destination location are yet to be revealed. Here, we performed molecular dynamics simulations of yeast DNA replication machinery, an H3/H4 tetramer, and replicated DNA strands. The simulations demonstrated that histones are recycled via Cdc45-mediated and unmediated pathways without histone chaperones, as our in vitro biochemical assays supported. Also, RPA binding regulated the ratio recycled to each strand, whereas DNA bending by Pol ε modulated the destination location. Together, the simulations provided testable hypotheses, which are vital for elucidating the molecular mechanisms of histone recycling.

Abstract

Ovulation disorders are a major cause of low pregnancy rates and infertility in humans and livestock. Kisspeptin neurons located in the anteroventral periventricular nucleus (AVPV) are responsible for the generation of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)/luteinizing hormone (LH) surge and the consequent ovulation in female rodents. The present study aimed to examine whether purinergic neurons are direct upstream stimulators of AVPV kisspeptin neurons that trigger the GnRH/LH surge and consequent ovulation in Kiss1-Cre rats. We specifically knocked down the mRNA expression of the P2rx2 purinergic receptor in AVPV kisspeptin neurons by administering an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector containing Cre-dependent P2rx2 short hairpin RNA (shRNA) into the AVPV region of ovariectomized (OVX) Kiss1-Cre rats treated with a proestrus level of estradiol-17β (OVX + high E2) or ovary-intact Kiss1-Cre rats. The E2-induced afternoon LH surge was significantly suppressed by AVPV kisspeptin neuron-specific knockdown of P2rx2 in OVX + high E2 Kiss1-Cre rats compared with scrambled shRNA-treated control OVX + high E2 Kiss1-Cre rats. Furthermore, the specific knockdown of P2rx2 in AVPV kisspeptin neurons largely disrupted the estrous cycle, spontaneous LH surge, and ovulation in ovary-intact Kiss1-Cre rats. These findings suggest that purinergic neurons directly stimulate AVPV kisspeptin neurons via P2X2 receptors (P2RX2) to induce the GnRH/LH surge and consequent ovulation in female rats.

Abstract

We show the appearance of an unconventional Majorana zero mode whose wave function splits into multiple parts located at different ends of different topological superconductors, hereinafter referred to as a multi-locational Majorana zero mode. Specifically, we discuss the multi-locational Majorana zero modes in a three-terminal Josephson junction consisting of topological superconductors, which forms an elemental qubit of fault-tolerant topological quantum computers. Abstract

Relapsing epiglottitis has rarely been reported, and its etiology is not well established. A 44-year-old previously healthy Japanese man presented with a quickly progressing choking sensation. He had been experiencing refractory and relapsing laryngeal edema and probably acute epiglottitis (three episodes within 2 weeks), with rash and elevated pancreatic amylase. The patient required immediate intubation. After the initial extubation, he required reintubation and a subsequent tracheostomy. Antibiotics, glucocorticoid, and antihistamines were administered, and he finally recovered with the tracheostomy’s closure. Potential causes of this patient’s relapsing epiglottitis are as follows: persistent right swollen tonsil; a positive result on a Mycoplasma pneumoniae antigen test and a particle agglutination (PA) test, implicating chronic tonsillitis; and/or Mycoplasma infection. This is the first case report of refractory and relapsing epiglottitis requiring reintubation possibly concurrent with chronic tonsillitis and Mycoplasma infection.

Abstract

In the past, transvaginal surgery, native tissue restoration, or obliterative methods have been used in the majority of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surgeries. Since laparoscopy has gained popularity, other procedures have been created to provide additional POP repair alternatives. Laparoscopic technique offers many advantages compared to open or transvaginal surgery when it comes to anatomical and surgical outcomes, recurrence rates, and patient’s acceptance. Furthermore, we encouraged incorporating different laparoscopic techniques into urogynecology training to attract young gynecologists. Based on our own clinical and surgical experience, we present various laparoscopic techniques for treating POP. We think that by giving patients a variety of surgical alternatives, we can treat them all more effectively.

27. Verification of the Therapeutic Pain Inhibition and Neurophysiological Response by Combined Vibration and Thermal Stimulation to the Abdomen

Abstract

This study investigated the pain inhibition and neurophysiological responses elicited by combined vibration and thermal stimulation applied to the abdomen. Eighteen healthy male volunteers participated in a crossover study comparing vibratory stimulation to the abdomen alone with combined vibratory and thermal stimulation. The primary outcomes measured were the pressure pain threshold (PPT), autonomic nervous function (using heart rate variability), and brain wave activity (using EEG). The results showed no significant differences between the conditions in PPT, comfort levels, autonomic nervous, or brain wave activities. However, significant correlations were observed between PPT and autonomic nervous activities and between brain waves and autonomic nervous activities in the combined condition, suggesting a neurophysiological interaction. Specifically, increased parasympathetic activity was associated with reduced pain perception, indicating potential vagus nerve involvement. This study suggests that while combined stimulation does not enhance pain inhibition more than vibration alone, it does indicate complex neurophysiological interactions. Further studies should explore these mechanisms and the clinical potential of combined stimulation for pain relief, particularly in cases where direct stimulation is challenging.

Abstract

Background: Recent data have shown that systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a significant risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) and poorer cardiovascular outcomes in the setting of acute coronary syndrome. However, the morphological characteristics of CAD and the long-term cardiovascular outcomes in patients with concurrent SSc and CAD remain unclear. Methods: We retrospectively investigated 3,300 patients with CAD who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) without prior myocardial infarction or coronary artery revascularization. Laboratory, echocardiographic and angiographic characteristics, and clinical outcomes were compared between patients with and without SSc according to a 1:3 propensity score-matching analysis adjusted for patient demographics and comorbidities. The primary outcome was a composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, and stroke, and the secondary outcome was a composite of the primary outcome and heart failure hospitalization. Results: Among all 3,300 patients, 17 (0.5 %) had SSc. The patients were classified into an SSc group (n = 17) and non-SSc group (n = 51) by propensity score matching. There were no significant differences in laboratory or echocardiographic parameters between the two groups. However, CAD tended to be more complex in the SSc group because of the higher proportion of left main trunk lesions (p = 0.100) and higher SYNergy between PCI with TAXUS™ and Cardiac Surgery (SYNTAX) score (p = 0.030). Abstract

In this study, the expansion behavior of cement materials after high-temperature heating and water immersion was observed experimentally. Two experiments were conducted using mortar specimens with different sand-to-cement ratios subjected to different high-temperature histories up to 1000 °C. In Case 1, the specimens were immersed in water after high-temperature heating and then cooled naturally; in Case 2, the specimens were immersed in water at high temperatures without the cooling process. Based on the results, it was confirmed that lime expansion due to the rehydration of CaO by heating occurred in Case 1. In contrast, dynamic continuous explosive spalling occurred in Case 2 because of water penetration into the specimen at a high temperature. The explosive spalling in water observed in Case 2 is a phenomenon that has not been reported to date. Possible failure mechanisms for lime expansion and continuous expansive spalling in water are suggested.

Abstract

We measured a set of $\pi^\pm\Sigma^\mp$, $\pi^0\Sigma^0$, and $\pi^-\Sigma^0$ invariant mass spectra below and above the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold in $K^-$-induced reactions on deuteron. We deduced the $S$-wave $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\pi\Sigma$ and $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a $\bar{K}N$ and $\pi\Sigma$ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to $\Lambda(1405)$ is located at 1417.7$^{+6.0}_{-7.4}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$(systematic errors) + $[-26.1^{+6.0}_{-7.9}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.7}_{-2.0}$(systematic errors)]$i$ MeV/$c^2$, closer to the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of $\phi$-meson production in asymmetric Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and in U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the $\phi\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ decay channel at midrapidity $|\eta|<0.35$. Features of $\phi$-meson production measured in Cu$+$Cu, Cu$+$Au, Au$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the $\phi$ meson in Cu$+$Au, Au$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear-overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate $p_T$, $\phi$-meson production measured in Cu$+$Au and U$+$U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high $p_T$ the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. Abstract

Abstract Lung cancer complicated by follicular lymphoma has rarely been reported in the literature. A 69‐year‐old male with an abnormal shadow on a chest radiograph was referred to our hospital. A mass in the right lung was seen on chest computed tomography (CT). Positron emission tomography‐CT showed fluorodeoxyglucose accumulation in the esophagus and multiple intra‐abdominal lymph nodes, in addition to the right lung lesion. The lung lesion was diagnosed as a pulmonary adenocarcinoma after biopsy. Upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopies did not reveal the presence of a tumor. Open lymph node biopsy was performed to determine the course of treatment, leading to a diagnosis of follicular lymphoma. The patient finally underwent radical resection for lung cancer; the follicular lymphoma was judged to be low‐grade and was followed up. When complications involving other organs are detected during systemic examination of a patient with lung cancer, it is necessary to distinguish between metastasis to other organs and complications of other malignant diseases, as this will greatly influence the treatment strategy.

Abstract Background Pemetrexed (PEM) is the primary chemotherapy for non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), showing potential for long‐term disease stability in certain cases. However, studies examining disease control with PEM therapy are lacking. This study aimed to pinpoint clinical traits in patients with NSCLC responding well to PEM therapy, predict factors influencing disease control, and suggest optimal treatment approaches. Methods A retrospective analysis of patients with NSCLC treated with PEM was performed to compare patients who achieved disease control after treatment with those who did not. Results Of 73 patients, 56 (76.7%) achieved disease control with PEM therapy. In the disease control group, a significantly higher proportion of patients exhibited good performance status (PS) and received PEM doses without reduction after the second cycle. Multivariate analysis identified bevacizumab (Bev) noncompliance, PEM dose reduction, and thyroid transcription factor‐1 (TTF‐1) negativity as significant independent risk factors for disease progression during PEM therapy.
