Search

3C84 is a nearby radio source with a complex total intensity structure, showing linear polarisation and spectral patterns. A detailed investigation of the central engine region necessitates the use of VLBI above the hitherto available maximum frequency of 86GHz. Using ultrahigh resolution VLBI observations at the highest available frequency of 228GHz, we aim to directly detect compact structures and understand the physical conditions in the compact region of 3C84. We used EHT 228GHz observations and, given the limited (u,v)-coverage, applied geometric model fitting to the data. We also employed quasi-simultaneously observed, multi-frequency VLBI data for the source in order to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the core structure. We report the detection of a highly ordered, strong magnetic field around the central, SMBH of 3C84. The brightness temperature analysis suggests that the system is in equipartition. We determined a turnover frequency of $\nu_m=(113\pm4)$GHz, a corresponding synchrotron self-absorbed magnetic field of $B_{SSA}=(2.9\pm1.6)$G, and an equipartition magnetic field of $B_{eq}=(5.2\pm0.6)$G. Three components are resolved with the highest fractional polarisation detected for this object ($m_\textrm{net}=(17.0\pm3.9)$%). The positions of the components are compatible with those seen in low-frequency VLBI observations since 2017-2018. We report a steeply negative slope of the spectrum at 228GHz. We used these findings to test models of jet formation, propagation, and Faraday rotation in 3C84. The findings of our investigation into different flow geometries and black hole spins support an advection-dominated accretion flow in a magnetically arrested state around a rapidly rotating supermassive black hole as a model of the jet-launching system in the core of 3C84. We report results on deep Jansky Very Large Array A-configuration observations at 22 GHz of the hotspots of the radio galaxies 3C227 and 3C445. Synchrotron emission in the optical on scales up to a few kpc was reported for the four hotspots. Our VLA observations point out the presence of unresolved regions with upper limit to their linear size of about 100 pc. This is the first time that such compact components in hotspots have been detected in a mini-sample, indicating that they are not a peculiar characteristic of a few individual hotspots. The polarization may reach values up to 70 per cent in compact (about 0.1 kpc scale) regions within the hotspot, indicating a highly ordered magnetic field with size up to a hundred parsecs. On larger scales, the average polarization of the hotspot component is about 30-45 per cent, suggesting the presence of a significant random field component, rather than an ordered magnetic field. This is further supported by the displacement between the peaks in polarized intensity and in total intensity images that is observed in all the four hotspots. The electric vector position angle is not constant, but changes arbitrarily in the central part of the hotspot regions, whereas it is usually perpendicular to the total intensity contours of the outermost edge of the hotspot structure, likely marking the large-scale shock front. The misalignment between X-ray and radio-to-optical emission suggests that the former is tracing the current particle acceleration, whereas the latter marks older shock fronts., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, published in MNRAS

Realistic synthetic observations of theoretical source models are essential for our understanding of real observational data. In using synthetic data, one can verify the extent to which source parameters can be recovered and evaluate how various data corruption effects can be calibrated. These studies are important when proposing observations of new sources, in the characterization of the capabilities of new or upgraded instruments, and when verifying model-based theoretical predictions in a comparison with observational data. We present the SYnthetic Measurement creator for long Baseline Arrays (SYMBA), a novel synthetic data generation pipeline for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. SYMBA takes into account several realistic atmospheric, instrumental, and calibration effects. We used SYMBA to create synthetic observations for the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a mm VLBI array, which has recently captured the first image of a black hole shadow. After testing SYMBA with simple source and corruption models, we study the importance of including all corruption and calibration effects. Based on two example general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) model images of M87, we performed case studies to assess the attainable image quality with the current and future EHT array for different weather conditions. The results show that the effects of atmospheric and instrumental corruptions on the measured visibilities are significant. Despite these effects, we demonstrate how the overall structure of the input models can be recovered robustly after performing calibration steps. With the planned addition of new stations to the EHT array, images could be reconstructed with higher angular resolution and dynamic range. Characterizing the variability of the extragalactic sources used for calibration in the Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) is key to assess the flux scale uncertainty of science observations. To this end, we model the variability of 39 quasars which have been used by ALMA as secondary flux calibrators using continuous time stochastic processes. This formalism is specially adapted to the multi-frequency, quasi-periodic sampling which characterizes the calibration monitoring of ALMA. We find that simple mixtures of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes can describe well the flux and spectral index variability of these sources for Bands 3 and 7 (91.5 and 103.5, and 343.5 GHz, respectively). The spectral shape of the calibrators are characterized by negative spectral indices, mostly between $-0.35$ and $-0.80$, and with additional concavity. The model provides forecasts, interpolations, and uncertainty estimations for the observed fluxes that depend on the intrinsic variability of the source. These can be of practical use for the ALMA data calibrator survey and data quality assurance.

We present the first radio polarimetric observations of a fast-rising blue optical transient, AT2018cow. Two epochs of polarimetry with additional coincident photometry were performed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The overall photometric results based on simultaneous observations in the 100 and 230 GHz bands are consistent with the non-thermal radiation model reported by Ho et al. (2019) and indicate that the spectral peaks ($\sim110$ GHz at the first epoch and $\sim67$ GHz at the second epoch) represent the synchrotron self-absorption frequency. The non-detection of linear polarization with $<$0.15% in the 230 GHz band at the phase when the effect of synchrotron self-absorption was quite small in the band may be explained by internal Faraday depolarization with high circumburst density and strong magnetic field. This result supports the stellar explosion scenario rather than the tidal disruption model. We present ALMA Band 6 observations of the CO(2-1), HCN(3-2), and HCO$^{+}$(3-2) lines in the nearby radio galaxy / brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of NGC 1275 with the spatial resolution of $\sim20$ pc. In the previous observations, CO(2-1) emission was detected as radial filaments lying in the east-west direction. We resolved the inner filament and found that the filament cannot be represented by a simple infalling stream both morphologically and kinematically. The observed complex nature of the filament resembles the cold gas structure predicted by recent numerical simulations of cold chaotic accretion. A crude estimate suggests that the accretion rate of the cold gas can be higher than that of hot gas. Within the central 100 pc, we detected a rotational disk of the molecular gas whose mass is $\sim10^{8} M_{\sun}$. This is the first evidence of the presence of massive cold gas disk on this spatial scale for BCGs. The disk rotation axis is approximately consistent with the axis of the radio jet on subpc scales. This probably suggests that the cold gas disk is physically connected to the innermost accretion disk which is responsible for jet launching. We also detected absorption features in the HCN(3-2) and HCO$^{+}$(3-2) spectra against the radio continuum emission mostly radiated by $\sim1.2$-pc size jet. The absorption features are blue-shifted from the systemic velocity by $\sim$300-600~km~s$^{-1}$, which suggests the presence of outflowing gas from the active galactic nucleus (AGN). We discuss the relation of the AGN feeding with cold accretion, the origin of blue-shifted absorption, and estimate of black hole mass using the molecular gas dynamics., Comment: Version 2 (accepted version). 18 pages, 16 figures. We report the first detection of radio polarization of a GRB afterglow with the first intensive combined use of telescopes in the millimeter and submillimeter ranges for GRB171205A. The linear polarization degree in the millimeter band at the sub-percent level ($0.27 \pm 0.04\%$) is lower than those observed in late-time optical afterglows (weighted average of $\sim 1\%$). The Faraday depolarization by non-accelerated, cool electrons in the shocked region is one of possible mechanisms for the low value. In this scenario, larger total energy by a factor of $\sim 10$ than ordinary estimate without considering non-accelerated electrons is required. The polarization position angle varies by at least 20 degrees across the millimeter band, which is not inconsistent with this scenario. This result indicates that polarimetry in the millimeter and submillimeter ranges is a unique tool for investigating GRB energetics, and coincident observations with multiple frequencies or bands would provide more accurate measurements of the non-accelerated electron fraction., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters; 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Radio jets in active galaxies have been expected to interact with circumnuclear environments in their early phase evolutions. By performing the multi-epoch monitoring observation with the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) at 43~GHz, we investigate the kinematics of the notable newborn bright component C3 located at the tip of the recurrent jet of 3C~84. During 2015 August-September, we discover the flip of C3 and the amount of the flip is about 0.4~milli-arcsecond in angular scale, which corresponds to 0.14 parsec in physical scale. After the flip of C3, it wobbled at the same location for a few months and then it restarted to propagate towards the southern direction. The flux density of C3 coherently showed the monotonic increase during the observation period. The flip is in good agreement with hydrodynamical simulations of jets in clumpy ambient medium. We estimate the number density of the putative clump based on the momentum balance between the jet thrust and the ram pressure from the clump and it is about $10^{3-5}~{\rm cm^{-3}}$. Understanding the launching, acceleration, and collimation of jets powered by active galactic nuclei remains an outstanding problem in relativistic astrophysics. This is partly because observational tests of jet formation models suffer from the limited angular resolution of ground-based very long baseline interferometry that has thus far been able to probe the transverse jet structure in the acceleration and collimation zone of only two sources. Here we report radio interferometric observations of 3C 84 (NGC 1275), the central galaxy of the Perseus cluster, made with an array including the orbiting radio telescope of the RadioAstron mission. The obtained image transversely resolves the edge-brightened jet in 3C 84 only 30 microarcseconds from the core, which is ten times closer to the central engine than what has been possible in previous ground-based observations, and it allows us to measure the jet collimation profile from ~ 100 to ~10000 gravitational radii from the black hole. The previously found, almost cylindrical jet profile on scales larger than a few thousand r_g is now seen to continue at least down to a few hundred r_g from the black hole and we find a broad jet with a transverse radius larger than about 250 r_g at only 350 r_g from the core. If the bright outer jet layer is launched by the black hole ergosphere, it has to rapidly expand laterally on scales smaller than 100 r_g. We present Very Long Baseline Array polarimetric observations of the innermost jet of 3C$\sim$84 (NGC$\sim$1275) at 43$\sim$GHz. A significant polarized emission is detected at the hotspot of the innermost re-started jet, which is located $\sim$1 pc south from the radio core. While the previous report presented a hotspot at the southern end of the western limb, the hotspot location has been moved to the southern end of the eastern limb. Faraday rotation is detected within an entire bandwidth of the 43-GHz band. The measured rotation measure (RM) is at most (6.3$\pm$1.9)$\times10^{5}$$\sim$rad$\sim$m$^{-2}$ and might be slightly time variable on the timescale of a month by a factor of a few. Our measured RM and the RM previously reported by the CARMA and SMA observations cannot be consistently explained by the spherical accretion flow with a power-law profile. We propose that a clumpy/inhomogeneous ambient medium is responsible for the observed rotation measure. Using equipartition magnetic field, we derive the electron density of $2\times10^{4}$$\sim$cm$^{-3}$. Such an electron density is consistent with the cloud of narrow line emission region around the central engine. We explore physical properties of the shocked external medium (i.e., a shell) in 3C 84 associated with the recurrent radio lobe born around 1960. In the previous work of Ito et al., we investigated a dynamical and radiative evolution of such a shell after the central engine stops the jet launching and we found that a fossil shell emission overwhelms that of the rapidly fading radio lobe. We apply this model to 3C 84 and find the followings: (i) The fossil shell made of shocked diffuse ambient matter with the number density of 0.3 cm$^{-3}$ radiates bright Inverse-Compton (IC) emission with the seed photons of the radio emission from the central compact region and the IC emission is above the sensitivity threshold of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). (ii) When the fossil shell is produced in a geometrically thick ionized plasma with the number density of $10^{3}$ cm$^{-3}$ and the field strength in the shell may reach about 17 mG in the presence of magnetic fields amplification and the radio emission becomes comparable to the sensitivity of deep imaging VLBI observations. We present Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) polarization observations at 97.5 GHz of the southern hot spot of the radio galaxy 3C 445. The hot spot structure is dominated by two bright components enshrouded by diffuse emission. Both components show fractional polarization between 30 and 40 per cent, suggesting the presence of shocks. The polarized emission of the western component has a displacement of about 0.5 kpc outward with respect to the total intensity emission, and may trace the surface of a front shock. Strong polarization is observed in a thin strip marking the ridge of the hot spot structure visible from radio to optical. No significant polarization is detected in the diffuse emission between the main components, suggesting a highly disordered magnetic field likely produced by turbulence and instabilities in the downstream region that may be at the origin of the extended optical emission observed in this hot spot. The polarization properties support a scenario in which a combination of both multiple and intermittent shock fronts due to jet dithering, and spatially distributed stochastic second-order Fermi acceleration processes are present in the hot spot complex., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

This White Paper details the intentions and plans of the East Asian Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) community for pushing the frontiers of millimeter/submillimeter VLBI. To this end, we shall endeavor to actively promote coordinated efforts in the East Asia region. Our goal is to establish firm collaborations among the East Asia VLBI community in partnership with related institutes in North America and Europe and to expand existing global mm/submm VLBI arrays for (a) exploring the vicinity of black holes with an ultimate angular resolution down to 1~R$_{S}$ (Schwarzschild radius) and (b) investigating the dynamics of circumstellar gas in star-forming regions and late-type stars, and circumnuclear gas around active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In the first half of this White Paper, we highlight scientific accomplishments of the East Asia (EA) VLBI community. Various VLBI research results on M87, Sgr A*, blazars, narrow-line Seyfert~1 galaxies, and compact symmetric objects are described, and future visions of our VLBI science are briefly presented. Maser science of star formation, stellar evolution, and physics of accretion disks around AGNs are also discussed. A new vision for conducting multi-transition maser studies using mm/submm VLBI together with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) is described. In the second half of this White Paper, we describe the EA community's vision for using mm/submm VLBI arrays in the framework or extended version of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) and the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA). We present full-polarization observations of the compact, steep-spectrum radio quasar 3C~286 made with the ALMA at 1.3~mm. These are the first full-polarization ALMA observations, which were obtained in the framework of Science Verification. A bright core and a south-west component are detected in the total intensity image, similar to previous centimeter images. Polarized emission is also detected toward both components. The fractional polarization of the core is about 17\%, this is higher than the fractional polarization at centimeter wavelengths, suggesting that the magnetic field is even more ordered in the millimeter radio core than it is further downstream in the jet. The observed polarization position angle (or EVPA) in the core is $\sim$\,$39^{\circ}$, which confirms the trend that the EVPA slowly increases from centimeter to millimeter wavelengths. With the aid of multi-frequency VLBI observations, we argue that this EVPA change is associated with the frequency-dependent core position. High-resolution millimeter wave very-long-baseline interferometry (mm-VLBI) is an ideal tool for probing the structure at the base of extragalactic jets in detail. The TeV blazar Mrk 501 is one of the best targets among BL Lac objects for studying the nature of off-axis jet structures because it shows different jet position angles at different scales. The aim of this study is to investigate the properties of the off-axis jet structure through high-resolution mm-VLBI images at the jet base and physical parameters such as kinematics, flux densities, and spectral indices. We performed Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations over six epochs from 2012 February to 2013 February at 43 GHz. Quasi-simultaneous Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA) observations at 86 GHz were performed in May 2012. We discover a new jet component at the northeast direction from the core in all the images at 43 and 86 GHz. The new component shows the off-axis location from the persistent jet extending to the southeast. The 43 GHz images reveal that the scattering of the positions of the NE component is within ~0.2 mas. The 86 GHz data reveals a jet component located 0.75 mas southeast of the radio core. We investigate shell emission associated with dying radio loud AGNs. First, based on our recent work by Ito et al. (2015), we describe the dynamical and spectral evolutions of shells after stopping the jet energy injection. We find that the shell emission overwhelms that of the radio lobes soon after stopping the jet energy injection because fresh electrons are continuously supplied into the shell via the forward shock while the radio lobes rapidly fade out without jet energy injection. We find that such fossil shells can be a new class of target sources for SKA telescope. Next, we apply the model to the nearby radio source 3C84. Then, we find that the fossil shell emission in 3C84 is less luminous in radio band while it is bright in TeV gamma-ray band and it can be detectable by CTA., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, in press for Astronomische Nachrichten. We investigate the location of the radio jet bases ("radio cores") of blazars in radio images, and their stationarity by means of dense very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations. In order to measure the position of a radio core, we conducted 12 epoch astrometric observation of the blazar Markarian 421 with the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry at 22 GHz immediately after a large X-ray flare, which occurred in the middle of 2011 September. For the first time, we find that the radio core is not stationary but rather changes its location toward 0.5 mas downstream. This angular scale corresponds to the de-projected length of a scale of $10^5$ Schwarzschild radii (Rs) at the distance of Markarian~421. We report on VLBI observations of NGC 1275 with VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) during 2008 and 2013 at 15, 22 and 43 GHz. Our observations provide long-term variations in the radio flux and structure of the inner jet in NGC 1275 on sub-parsec scales, particularly at C3 which is a new radio component accountable for the recent active state in radio regime since early-2000s. We found the apparent velocity of C3 was $\beta_{\rm{app}} = 0.267 \pm 0.007 $, which was consistent with typical velocities of the hot spot and/or radio lobes in the young radio sources. Furthermore, the radio flux and size of C3 had simultaneously increased during September 2007 and May 2012 with keeping optically-thin spectra, suggesting that the particle acceleration occurred inside C3 as generally seen in the hot spots of the radio lobes. Our new observations suggest that C3 is a new-born hot spot and/or radio lobe at a very early stage of its evolution. A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to ~15 km. To develop and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from September to late November 2014, culminating in end-to-end observations, calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as 19 mas at ~350 GHz. The nearby radio galaxy M87 offers a unique opportunity for exploring the connection between gamma-ray production and jet formation at an unprecedented linear resolution. However, the origin and location of the gamma-rays in this source is still elusive. Based on previous radio/TeV correlation events, the unresolved jet base (radio core) and the peculiar knot HST-1 at 120 pc from the nucleus are proposed as candidate site(s) of gamma-ray production. Here we report our intensive, high-resolution radio monitoring observations of the M87 jet with the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) and the European VLBI Network (EVN) from February 2011 to October 2012, together with contemporaneous high-energy gamma-ray light curves obtained by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. During this period, an elevated level of the M87 flux is reported at TeV with VERITAS. We detected a remarkable flux increase in the radio core with VERA at 22/43 GHz coincident with the VHE activity. Meanwhile, HST-1 remained quiescent in terms of its flux density and structure in the radio band. These results strongly suggest that the TeV gamma-ray activity in 2012 originates in the jet base within 0.03 pc (projected) from the central black hole., Comment: 2014 Fermi Symposium proceedings - eConf C14102.1

We explore the degree of magnetization at the jet base of M87 by using the observational data of the event horizon telescope (EHT) at 230~GHz obtained by Doeleman et al. By utilizing the method in Kino et al., we derive the energy densities of magnetic fields ($U_{B}$) and electrons and positrons ($U_{\pm}$) in the compact region detected by EHT (EHT-region) with its full-width-half-maximum size $40~{\rm \mu as}$. First, we assume that an optically-thick region for synchrotron self absorption (SSA) exists in the EHT-region. Then, we find that the SSA-thick region should not be too large not to overproduce the Poynting power at the EHT-region. The allowed ranges of the angular size and the magnetic field strength of the SSA-thick region are $21~{\rm \mu as} \le \theta_{\rm thick}\le 26.3~{\rm \mu as}$ and $50~{\rm G}\le B_{\rm tot}\le 124~{\rm G}$, respectively. Correspondingly $U_{B}\gg U_{\pm} $ is realized in this case. We further examine the composition of plasma and energy density of protons by utilizing the Faraday rotation measurement ($RM$) at 230~GHz obtained by Kuo et al. Then, we find that $U_{B}\gg U_{\pm}+U_{p} $ still holds in the SSA-thick region. Second, we examine the case when EHT-region is fully SSA-thin. Then we find that $U_{B}\gg U_{\pm}$ still holds unless protons are relativistic. Thus, we conclude that magnetically driven jet scenario in M87 is viable in terms of energetics close to ISCO scale unless the EHT-region is fully SSA-thin and relativistic protons dominated., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the position of the radio core in a blazar by multi-epoch astrometric observations at 43 GHz. Using the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA), we have conducted four adjacent observations in February 2011 and another four in October 2011, and succeeded in measuring the position of the radio core in the TeV blazar Mrk 501 relative to a distant compact quasar NRAO 512. During our observations, we find that (1) there is no positional change within ~0.2 mas or ~2.0 pc de-projected with $\pm1\sigma$ error for the weighted-mean phase-referenced positions of Mrk 501 core relative to NRAO 512 over four adjacent days, and (2) there is an indication of position change for 3C 345 core relative to NRAO 512. The nearby radio galaxy M87 offers a unique opportunity for exploring the connection between gamma-ray production and jet formation at an unprecedented linear resolution. However, the origin and location of the gamma-rays in this source is still elusive. Based on previous radio/TeV correlation events, the unresolved jet base (radio core) and the peculiar knot HST-1 at >120 pc from the nucleus are proposed as candidate site(s) of gamma-ray production. Here we report our intensive, high-resolution radio monitoring observations of the M87 jet with the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) and the European VLBI Network (EVN) from February 2011 to October 2012. During this period, an elevated level of the M87 flux is reported at TeV with VERITAS. We detected a remarkable flux increase in the radio core with VERA at 22/43 GHz coincident with the VHE activity. Meanwhile, HST-1 remained quiescent in terms of its flux density and structure at radio. We present a study of sub-pc scale radio structure of the radio galaxy 3C 84/NGC 1275 based on the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) data at 43 GHz. We discover a limb-brightening in the "restarted" jet associated with the 2005 radio outburst. In the 1990s, the jet structure was ridge-brightening rather than limb-brightening, despite the observations being done with similar angular resolution. This indicates that the transverse jet structure has changed recently. This change in the morphology shows an interesting agreement with the $\gamma$-ray flux increase, i.e., the $\gamma$-ray flux in 1990s was at least seven times lower than the current one. One plausible explanation for the limb-brightening is the velocity structure of the jet in the context of the stratified jet, which is a successful scenario to explain the $\gamma$-ray emission in some active galactic nuclei (AGNs). If this is the case, the change in apparent transverse structure might be caused by the change in the transverse velocity structure. We argue the possibility that the transition from ridge-brightening to limb-brightening is related to the $\gamma$-ray time variability on the timescale of decades. The properties of tidally induced arms provide a means to study molecular cloud formation and the subsequent star formation under environmental conditions which in principle are different from quasi stationary spiral arms. We report the properties of a newly discovered molecular gas arm of likely tidal origin at the south of NGC 4039 and the overlap region in the Antennae galaxies, with a resolution of 1"68 x 0"85, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array science verification CO(2-1) data. The arm extends 3.4 kpc (34") and is characterized by widths of ~ 200 pc (2") and velocity widths of typically \DeltaV ~ 10-20 km/s . About 10 clumps are strung out along this structure, most of them unresolved, with average surface densities of \Sigma_gas ~ 10-100 Msun pc^{-2}, and masses of (1-8) x 10^6 Msun. These structures resemble the morphology of beads on a string, with an almost equidistant separation between the beads of about 350 pc, which may represent a characteristic separation scale for giant molecular associations. We find that the star formation efficiency at a resolution of 6" (600 pc) is in general a factor of 10 higher than in disk galaxies and other tidal arms and bridges. This arm is linked, based on the distribution and kinematics, to the base of the western spiral arm of NGC 4039, but its morphology is different to that predicted by high-resolution simulations of the Antennae galaxies., Comment: Accepted in ApJL, 8 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the radio and gamma-ray variability of the flat spectrum radio quasar PKS 1510-089 in the time range between 2010 November and 2012 January. In this period the source showed an intense activity, with two major gamma-ray flares detected in 2011 July and October. During the latter episode both the gamma-ray and the radio flux density reached their historical peak. Multiwavelength analysis shows a rotation of about 380 deg of the optical polarization angle close in time with the rapid and strong gamma-ray flare in 2011 July. An enhancement of the optical emission and an increase of the fractional polarization both in the optical and in radio bands is observed about three weeks later, close in time with another gamma-ray outburst. On the other hand, after 2011 September a huge radio outburst has been detected, first in the millimeter regime followed with some time delay at centimeter down to decimeter wavelengths. This radio flare is characterized by a rising and a decaying stage, in agreement with the formation of a shock and its evolution, as a consequence of expansion and radiative cooling. If the gamma-ray flare observed in 2011 October is related to this radio outburst, then this strongly indicates that the region responsible for the gamma-ray variability is not within the broad line, but a few parsecs downstream along the jet., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on the VLBI follow-up observations using the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) array at 22 GHz for the largest X-ray flare of TeV blazar Mrk 421 that occurred in mid-February, 2010. The total of five epochs of observations were performed at intervals of about 20 days between March 7 and May 31, 2010. No new-born component associated with the flare was seen directly in the total intensity images obtained by our multi-epoch VLBI observations. However, one jet component located at ~1 mas north-west from the core was able to be identified, and its proper motion can be measured as -1.66+/-0.46 mas yr^-1, which corresponds to an apparent velocity of -3.48+/-0.97 c. Here, this negative velocity indicates that the jet component was apparently moving toward the core. As the most plausible explanation, we discuss that the apparent negative velocity was possibly caused by the ejection of a new component, which could not be resolved with our observations. In this case, the obtained Doppler factor of the new component is around 10 to 20, which is consistent with the ones typically estimated by model fittings of spectral energy distribution for this source., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Aims: We aim to constrain the structural variations within the HST-1 region downstream of the radio jet of M87, in general as well as in connection to the episodes of activity at very high energy (VHE). Methods: We analyzed and compared 26 VLBI observations of the M87 jet, obtained between 2006 and 2011 with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 1.7 GHz and the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz. Results: HST-1 is detected at all epochs; we model-fitted its complex structure with two or more components, the two outermost of which display a significant proper motion with a superluminal velocity around ~4c. The motion of a third feature that is detected upstream is more difficult to characterize. The overall position angle of HST-1 has changed during the time of our observations from -65deg to -90deg, while the structure has moved by over 80 mas downstream. Our results on the component evolution suggest that structural changes at the upstream edge of HST-1 can be related to the VHE events., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters

Abridged: The giant radio galaxy M 87 with its proximity, famous jet, and very massive black hole provides a unique opportunity to investigate the origin of very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) gamma-ray emission generated in relativistic outflows and the surroundings of super-massive black holes. M 87 has been established as a VHE gamma-ray emitter since 2006. The VHE gamma-ray emission displays strong variability on timescales as short as a day. In this paper, results from a joint VHE monitoring campaign on M 87 by the MAGIC and VERITAS instruments in 2010 are reported. During the campaign, a flare at VHE was detected triggering further observations at VHE (H.E.S.S.), X-rays (Chandra), and radio (43 GHz VLBA). The excellent sampling of the VHE gamma-ray light curve enables one to derive a precise temporal characterization of the flare: the single, isolated flare is well described by a two-sided exponential function with significantly different flux rise and decay times. While the overall variability pattern of the 2010 flare appears somewhat different from that of previous VHE flares in 2005 and 2008, they share very similar timescales (~day), peak fluxes (Phi(>0.35 TeV) ~= (1-3) x 10^-11 ph cm^-2 s^-1), and VHE spectra. 43 GHz VLBA radio observations of the inner jet regions indicate no enhanced flux in 2010 in contrast to observations in 2008, where an increase of the radio flux of the innermost core regions coincided with a VHE flare. On the other hand, Chandra X-ray observations taken ~3 days after the peak of the VHE gamma-ray emission reveal an enhanced flux from the core. The long-term (2001-2010) multi-wavelength light curve of M 87, spanning from radio to VHE and including data from HST, LT, VLA and EVN, is used to further investigate the origin of the VHE gamma-ray emission. There is growing evidence of relativistic jets in radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (RL-NLS1) galaxies. We constrain the observational properties of the radio emission in the first RL-NLS1 galaxy ever detected in gamma-rays, PMN J0948+0022, i.e., its flux density and structure in total intensity and in polarization, its compactness, and variability. We performed three real-time e-VLBI observations of PMN J0948+0022 at 22 GHz, using a global array including telescopes in Europe, East Asia, and Australia. These are the first e-VLBI science observations ever carried out with a global array, reaching a maximum baseline length of 12458 km. The observations were part of a large multiwavelength campaign in 2009. The source is detected at all three epochs. The structure is dominated by a bright component, more compact than 55 microarcsec, with a fainter component at a position angle theta~ 35deg. Relativistic beaming is required by the observed brightness temperature of 3.4x10^11 K. Polarization is detected at a level of about 1%. The parameters derived by the VLBI observations, in addition to the broad-band properties, confirm that PMN J0948+0022 is similar to flat spectrum radio quasars. The detection of gamma-ray emission by Fermi-LAT from the radio loud Narrow Line Seyfert 1 PMN J0948+0022 (Abdo et al. 2009, ApJ 699, 976) triggered a multi-wavelength campaign between March and July 2009. Given its high compactness (Doi et al. 2006, PASJ 58, 829), inverted spectrum, and 0deg declination, the source was an ideal target to observe at 22 GHz with a Global VLBI array extending from Europe to East Asia and Australia. In order to deliver prompt results to be analysed in combination with the other instruments participating in the campaign, the observations were carried out with real time VLBI, for the first time on a Global scale. Indeed, the main results have been published just a few months after the campaign (Abdo et al. 2009, ApJ 707, 727). We report multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) study of the innermost jet of 3C 84. We carried out 14-epoch VLBI observations during 2006-2009 with the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) and the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA), immediately following the radio outburst that began in 2005. Comparison between VLBI lightcurve and single-dish lightcurve indicates that the outburst was associated with the central ~1 pc core. We found that this outburst accompanied the emergence of a new component, and the projected speed of this new component was 0:23c from 2007/297 (2007 October 24) to 2009/114 (2009 April 24). Using deep Chandra ACIS observation data for Cygnus A, we report evidence of non-thermal X-ray emission from radio lobes surrounded by a rich intra-cluster medium (ICM). The diffuse X-ray emission, which are associated with the eastern and western radio lobes, were observed in a 0.7--7 keV Chandra$ ACIS image. The lobe spectra are reproduced with not only a single-temperature Mekal model, such as that of the surrounding ICM component, but also an additional power-law (PL) model. The X-ray flux densities of PL components for the eastern and western lobes at 1 keV are derived as 77.7^{+28.9}_{-31.9} nJy and 52.4^{+42.9}_{-42.4} nJy, respectively, and the photon indices are 1.69^{+0.07}_{-0.13} and 1.84^{+2.90}_{-0.12}, respectively. The non-thermal component is considered to be produced via the inverse Compton (IC) process, as is often seen in the X-ray emission from radio lobes. From a re-analysis of radio observation data, the multiwavelength spectra strongly suggest that the seed photon source of the IC X-rays includes both cosmic microwave background radiation and synchrotron radiation from the lobes. The derived parameters indicate significant dominance of the electron energy density over the magnetic field energy density in the Cygnus A lobes under the rich ICM environment., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Following the recent discovery of gamma rays from the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PMN J0948+0022 (z=0.5846), we started a multiwavelength campaign from radio to gamma rays, which was carried out between the end of March and the beginning of July 2009. The source displayed activity at all the observed wavelengths: a general decreasing trend from optical to gamma-ray frequencies was followed by an increase of radio emission after less than two months from the peak of the gamma-ray emission. The largest flux change, about a factor of about 4, occurred in the X-ray band. The smallest was at ultraviolet and near-infrared frequencies, where the rate of the detected photons dropped by a factor 1.6-1.9. At optical wavelengths, where the sampling rate was the highest, it was possible to observe day-scale variability, with flux variations up to a factor of about 3. The behavior of PMN J0948+0022 observed in this campaign and the calculated power carried out by its jet in the form of protons, electrons, radiation and magnetic field are quite similar to that of blazars, specifically of flat-spectrum radio quasars. These results confirm the idea that radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies host relativistic jets with power similar to that of average blazars., Comment: 39 pages, 12 figures. Gamma-ray emission from cocoons of young radio galaxies is predicted. Considering the process of adiabatic injection of the shock dissipation energy and mass of the relativistic jet into the cocoon, we find that the thermal electron temperature of the cocoon is typically predicted to be of the order of $\sim$ MeV, and is determined only by the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet. Together with the time-dependent dynamics of the cocoon expansion, we find that young cocoons can yield thermal Bremsstrahlung emissions at energies $\sim$MeV. We present a new prediction of GeV $\gamma$-ray emission from radio lobes of young AGN jets. In the previous work of Kino et al. (2007), MeV $\gamma$-ray bremsstrahlung emission was predicted from young cocoons/radio-lobes in the regime of no coolings. In this study, we include cooling effects of bremsstrahlung emission and adiabatic loss. With the initial conditions determined by observed young radio lobes, we solve a set of equations describing the expanding lobe evolution. Then we find that the lobes initially have electron temperature of $\sim$GeV, and they cool down to $\sim$MeV by the adiabatic loss. Correspondingly, the lobes initially yield bright bremsstrahlung luminosity in $\sim$GeV range and they fade out. We estimate these $\gamma$-ray emissions and show that nearby young radio lobes could be detected with Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, MNRAS Letters, accepted
