Abstract

Frontiers in Chemistry 10, 976635 (2022). doi:10.3389/fchem.2022.976635, Flerovium (Fl, element 114) is the heaviest element chemically studied so far. Todate, its interaction with gold was investigated in two gas-solid chromatographyexperiments, which reported two different types of interaction, however, eachbased on the level of a few registered atoms only. Whereas noble-gas-likeproperties were suggested from the first experiment, the second one pointed ata volatile-metal-like character. Here, we present further experimental data onadsorption studies of Fl on silicon oxide and gold surfaces, accounting for theinhomogeneous nature of the surface, as it was used in the experiment andanalyzed as part of the reported studies. We confirm that Fl is highly volatile andthe least reactive member of group 14. Abstract

The chemical properties of an element are primarily governed by the configuration of electrons in the valence shell. Relativistic effects influence the electronic structure of heavy elements in the sixth row of the periodic table, and these effects increase dramatically in the seventh row--including the actinides--even affecting ground-state configurations (1,2). Atomic s and [p.sub.1/2] orbitals are stabilized by relativistic effects, whereas [p.sub.3/2], d and f orbitals are destabilized, so that ground-state configurations of heavy elements may differ from those of lighter elements in the same group. The first ionization potential ([IP.sub.1]) is a measure of the energy required to remove one valence electron from a neutral atom, and is an atomic property that reflects the outermost electronic configuration. Precise and accurate experimental determination of IP1 gives information on the binding energy of valence electrons, and also, therefore, on the degree of relativistic stabilization. However, such measurements are hampered by the difficulty in obtaining the heaviest elements on scales of more than one atom at a time (3-5). Here we report that the experimentally obtained IP1 of the heaviest actinide, lawrencium (Lr, atomic number 103), is [4.96.sup.+0.08.sub.-0.07] electronvolts. The IP1 of Lr was measured with [sup.256]Lr (half-life 27 seconds) using an efficient surface ion-source and a radioisotope detection system coupled to a mass separator. The measured [IP.sub.1] is in excellent agreement with the value of 4.963(15) electronvolts predicted here by state-of-the-art relativistic calculations. Abstract

In recent years gas-phase chemical studies assisted by physical pre-separation allowed for the investigation of fragile single molecular species by gas-phase chromatography. The latest success with the heaviest group 6 transactinide seaborgium is highlighted. The formation of a very volatile hexacarbonyl compound Sg(CO)6 was observed similarly to its lighter homologues molybdenum and tungsten. The interactions of these gaseous carbonyl complex compounds with quartz surfaces were investigated by thermochromatography. Second-generation experiments are under way to investigate the intramolecular bond between the central metal atom of the complexes and the ligands addressing the influence of relativistic effects in the heaviest compounds. Our contribution comprises some aspects of the ongoing challenging experiments as well as an outlook towards other interesting compounds related to volatile complex compounds in the gas phase.

Hyperfine-structure parameters and isotope shifts for the 795-nm atomic transitions in At217,218,219 have been measured at CERN-ISOLDE, using the in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique. Magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments, and changes in the nuclear mean-square charge radii, have been deduced. A large inverse odd-even staggering in radii, which may be associated with the presence of octupole collectivity, has been observed. Namely, the radius of the odd-odd isotope At218 has been found to be larger than the average of its even-N neighbors, At217,219. The discrepancy between the additivity-rule prediction and experimental data for the magnetic moment of At218 also supports the possible presence of octupole collectivity in the considered nuclei. ispartof: Physical Review C vol:99 issue:5 status: published

Abstract

Fission fragment mass distributions were measured in heavy-ion induced fissions using 238U target nucleus. The measured mass distributions changed drastically with incident energy. The results are explained by a change of the ratio between fusion and qasifission with nuclear orientation. A calculation based on a fluctuation dissipation model reproduced the mass distributions and their incident energy dependence. Fusion probability was determined in the analysis, and the values were consistent with those determined from the evaporation residue cross sections.
